What’s Up Caught on Tape
Following on from last year’s shameful Roman Landick incident, where the son of a member of parliament brutally beat up his female ‘friend’ – all captured on video, posted on YouTube and watched by thousands across the world – Ukraine has scored another international black eye. And it’s not the only one. Violence erupted at an 18th birthday party somewhere in Ukraine (where exactly is still a bit unclear) earlier this month. Again, it was captured on CCTV and duly posted on YouTube, with a jaunty soundtrack, and shows a girl rushing out into a restaurant corridor and immediately becoming embroiled in a fracas. Things escalate swiftly, with other diners rushing out and a mass brawl kicking off. Guys punching guys, girls trading blows with girls. So far, so Friday night in any number of places. Then, things take a truly grim turn as the guys start laying into the girls. And we’re not talking slaps or jabs, but full-on, body-behind-it, right hooks. Take your pick from what is most shocking – the force of blows rained down, the other guys not intervening to stop, or, perhaps just the fact that the onlookers don’t look that shocked. Those commenting in the international media or on YouTube (www.youtube.com/ watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ip56oKWRxKc) don’t seem to share that lack of shock.
Raiders Are Back
The days of men in black masks terrorising the neighbourhood in search of money, power and property were supposed to be in the past. This is supposed to be a world in which democracy reigns, where truth sets us free and equality is granted to all. Unfortunately, Ukraine was absent the day they taught that in school. Just last weekend, in the early morning hours, 100 men dressed in black broke into the Lukyanivska outdoor market, demolishing the gates and attacking all those present. Beet brokers and potato pedlars are the city’s newest victims of raider attacks. They did not take it lying down, however, and mobilised just in time to bring the situation under control. While they may have won the battle, there is a war yet to be won. Someone wants that space to put up some sort of business centre, and someone will no doubt get his wish. As unfortunate as it is, brawn often wins out in this country, which means anyone with a brain typically loses out.
England Fans Snub EURO 2012
According to numerous reports in the British press, English football fans are not going to be present during EURO 2012 in the numbers expected. In fact, only a third of the tickets allocated have been sold so far. Reasons cited for this are (can you guess?) expensive hotel accommodation, distances between venues and the difficulty in travelling between them, worries over the financial crisis, and England’s poor performance in South Africa two years ago. It will be the first time the country has not used its full allocation of tickets, and it must be something of a concern for the organisers. Negative reports about Ukraine in the British press (such as the recent headline in that esteemed journal, The Sun, “HIV Hookers Peril for England Fans”) may also have affected the number of fans willing to visit the event. Knowing the English fans penchant to partake in a little hooliganism, however, no one’s crying about this one.
Lost?
Former bodyguard Mykola Melnychenko says those statements made by the SBU concerning his whereabouts are absolutely false: he has never been hiding, nor has he been evading the Ukrainian Security Service. Just to refresh everyone’s memory, Melnychenko allegedly recorded numerous conversations that apparently took place in the office of former President Leonid Kuchma. They resulted in the Cassette Scandal, which could have been highly inflammatory during the trial concerning the death of journalist Georgiy Gongadze. To add insult to serious injury, however,Melnychenko has been to Ukraine twice since 2011, and says he is insulted that the SBU has simply ignored him. “I must be interrogated,” he’s been quoted as saying. "They might have done it by phone or Skype, but they simply haven’t!” In October of 2011, a warrant was made for his arrest for “evading investigation and preventing the establishment of truth”. While reports said that he was hiding out in the States, he claims he was in Israel, because of the “plan to exterminate” him. Still alive and very much kicking, either the SBU has lost their former KGB prowess or Melnychenko is still hiding out in a shtetl somewhere making up stories.

A Magic Wand
The Kyiv State City Administration (KMDA) has taken a jump, leap and a bound into the 21st century, having announced their newest initiative – social cards for Kyiv citizens. The card would only apply to those citizens eligible for benefits. But as far as the KMDA is concerned, these cards are the most transparent and effective method for utilising finances related to the country’s social services. Not unlike a magic wand of sorts, fulfilling all manner of functions, just wave it around and you’ll have access to public transport, be able to make payments in supermarkets and pharmacies, get ZHEK to do its job (which really would be akin to magic), and more! And all of this before the end of the year. It sounds too good to be true, which typically means, especially here in Ukraine, it is. Will every supermarket, pharmacy and marshrutka be given a machine to read these cards? Who will pay for their use? What happens if they are stolen? Surely, the elderly will make up the group most eligible for such an innovation, and would most often be targeted. So many questions, so few answers, as is the case with most of the projects implemented in this country. But, at least we’re on the right track – that’s got to account for something!

This Week in History Freedom or Repression?
Oleh Tyahnybok of our nationalist party, Svoboda, has been shaking in his boots recently, and believes that all businesses in support of his political party are in grave danger. While he does sometimes seem as though he’s got a rather angry bee in his bonnet, getting all worked up over very little indeed, flying insects may be the least of his worries this time round. There has been a project introduced by the authorities recently with its own special code name, Satellite. And while it does all sound rather Bondlike, there is something sneaky going on, involving all supporters of the Svoboda party. “All of our supporters are facing the strictest repressions at the moment. They are being checked by the SBU, the prosecutor general, the sanitary authorities, and both fire and tax services.” Tyahnybok has also gone so far as to say there is a blacklist of those who support his party, and has listed 400 ‘victims’, including charitable funds and NGOs, in Lviv Oblast alone. So what is really going on with Svoboda, and more importantly, why is the government so interested?

The Beresil Ukrainian Theatre is founded by Les Kurbas in Kyiv. The name of the theatre is linked with the first month of spring, or Berezen in Ukrainian. The first play takes place eight months later. In 1926, the theatre is moved to Kharkiv, and is known today as the Ukrainian Academic Dramatic Theatre of Taras Schevchenko.
Viktor Yuschenko declares the dissolution of the Verkhovna Rada. New parliamentary elections are postponed several times, but eventually take place on 30 September, 2007. Yulia Tymoshenko’s Bloc (BYuT) and Our Ukraine-People’s Self Defence (OU-PSD) win a majority, while the Party of Regions remains the opposition.

Every Note Just as Smooth as the Last Chris Botti (US, jazz), October Palace (Instytutska 1)
3 April at 19.30
Working with musicians such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Paul Simon, Rod Stuart, Josh Groban, Sting, Steven Taylor, Andrea Bocelli and David Sandor, Chris Botti has long been considered a charismatic musician and talented composer. With his trumpet always by his side, he is a smooth jazz devotee who has come up with his own style just as impressive as the list of names with whom he has played. Just recently, a new name was added to this impressive list of musicians: our own Assia Ahat. Introduced to the Ukrainian violinist the last time Botti was in town, their momentous meeting resulted in a concert at the famous Blue Note Club, New York. After endless applause, the decision was quickly made to bring the concert to Kyiv. “It’s the beauty of your country, the attitude of your audience and the emotions that I feel every time I step on stage here in Ukraine” that keeps him coming back again and again. Admission is 100 – 1200hrv. For more information call 279-1582. : What's On Recommended

krainian designers have stepped up this season, with their contrasting Autumn/Winter 2012/2013 collections presented in Mystetskiy Arsenal. Focusing on some of the country's top créateurs, we invited popular Ukrainian fashion blogger, Mariya Rudomska, to give us her thoughts and impressions on this season’s collections. Providing readers with interesting and honest commentary, her blog takes a look at this country’s position in the fashion world alongside world leaders such as London, Paris and New York. Published in respected Ukrainian magazines, Rudomska is nothing if not dedicated to making the Ukrainian world a little bit more beautiful via her online influence.

Liliya Litkovskaya presents her UFW 2012/2013 collection in dedication to those living in the contemporary urban space, incorporating her inner world and emotions in the mix. Using a laconic foundation, she completes her look with multi-layered constructions, symbolising a rapidly changing city life. Likovskaya often has a strong penchant for monochromic shades and tones. This collection, however, features bright and vivid blues, silvers, wines and yellows.

The 34 catwalk shows featuring works by 43 designers at the 30th Ukrainian Fashion Week celebrated the catlike grace of modern women, their ability to hurl together sensitivity and stamina, and demonstrate all the colours of the rainbow. Tying the week up into one nice, neat little package, we asked fashion blogger Mariya Rudomska to throw her fashionable eye over the event.
The creative duo of Natalia Kamenskaya and Olesya Kononova reinvent the silhouette in their 2012/2013 collection. Using light fabrics with a combination of diverse textures and fabrics, as well as original details and accessories, the brand continues to amaze and surprise with its peculiar, yet practical style. Responding to all of the latest trends, massive earrings made of lace and decorated with sparkling gems will most certainly become a must-have from Kamenskaya Kononova!

In her 2012/2013 Autumn/ Winter collection, Olena Dats presents several elegant interpretations of the little black dress. Using incredibly intricate guipure lace, original graphic prints and other splendid elements, cosy alpaca coats are worn overtop, making this an incredible look worthy of any Red Carpet. With just two main colours in this collection, gentle pinks and brilliant blacks, this designer has put together something very close to exquisite.

The Ukraine Fashion Week 2012-2013 collection of Olena Przhonska has been built on the principles of plastic shapes and lines, as well as soft folds and draping. For the next cold season, choose between natural tones (bottle green, dark blue, pistachio and lilac) and fabrics (jacquard, knit jersey, viscose and wool), and then dress it all up with massive necklaces, inspired by architect Zaha Hadid. Creating looks both feminine and minimalist, this designer has real talent.
One of the most creative designers in the country, Olena Burenina, presents her monochrome collection, captivating the entire audience with each new look. Making a statement by way of mysticism and the eternal fight between light and darkness, Burenina uses sculpturally asymmetric jackets and coats, stylised trousers, freelymoving shirts and windbreakers, all from intentionally-aged leather.
Fedir Vozianov is the pride of the Ukrainian fashion industry, and the first Ukrainian designer heading the list of most prominent brands, according to Vogue Italia. In his newest collection, Vozianov presents classic feminine silhouettes, which are nothing less than masterpieces. Using natural French fabrics, such as silk and wool, the colours he’s chosen are gentle and warm. Following the creative ideas of the designer, the looks are finished off with original footwear by Snezhana Nekh.

Argishty (Armenia, folk), Babuin (Simona Petlyury 10)
13 April at 19.00
Having recently released his third album, popular Armenian trumpeter, Argishty, decided to go straight on tour. His arrangements featuring traditional Armenian folk are what first attracted people to him. What makes him special, however, are the instruments he plays and the way he plays them. The two that stand out at any concert are the traditional Armenian trumpet, called a Duduk, and two ancient Asian flutes called a Ney and a Blur. As instruments long-forgotten by other musicians, this is an event you’re going to want to take in. Admission is 80hrv. For more information call 050-356-3326.

Exhibition of paintings by Eugene Petrov, Zeh Gallery (Frunze 69)
29 May – 30 June
Eugene Petrov is taking a break from his usual watercolours and moving onto something a little out of the ordinary for him – oil paints. He has captured real-life scenes that, in the moment, seem calm and peaceful. The reality though, is that that moment is often the calm before the storm. It’s an interesting concept, and one Petrov picks up quite well. For more information call 591-1369.
Making A Little Water House Calls Never Hurt Anyone Hugh Laurie (UK), Palace Ukraine O Temps D’O by Barolosolo (France, circus theatre), Kyiv Theatre of Opera & Ballet for Children & Youth (Mezhyhirska 2)
25 and 26 April at 19.00
Translated as “the history of magical water”, this performance by French theatrical troupe, Barolosolo, is staged in 30cm of water. The stage opens to two musicians who have come to play a concert, and cannot understand why everything is so wet. Not letting a little water stand in their way, both want to remain dry, and end up going to extremes to ensure this happens. As part of the French Spring in Kyiv series, make sure you take it in. For tickets or more information call 234-7381.

Rising Social Awareness in Movies
CINEMA HOUSE On 23 March, the 9th International Human Rights Festival DocuDays UA kicked off in Kyiv. After much discussion, the topic of this year’s festival was, “Is there Authoritarianism in Ukraine?” Grouped into three categories, DOCU/Life, DOCU/Right and DOCU/Short, the festival featured movies demonstrating these particular problems from various angles, using examples from this and other countries around the world. Our congratulations to the organisers – this festival becomes more and more prominent and professional with each passing year!

Musical Switzerland
SWISS AMBASSADOR’S RESIDENCE The French Spring in Kyiv is a wonderful event in the city, and to get the ball rolling, Ambassador of Switzerland HE Christian Schoenenberger amassed a rather intimate crowd on 19 March. In between musical interludes by the Kohan Jazz Band, Swiss genius Michael von der Heide and Fagot of TNMK, dainties and drinks kept those in attendance well looked after.

A Feast Before the Show
MUSEUM LE CLUB The night before the opening of EuroFashion 2012, UFW put on a party with a rather long list of starry guests. Whilst sipping cocktails and chatting about fashion, DJ Fashion from Moscow and our own DJ Koss and Kovalevsky kept the music pumping, while a performance by the young and energetic Maks Barskih got everyone up out of their seats. After a great night on 18 March, there were nothing but smiles, and maybe a headache or two, at the opening the next day.

Ukrainian Fashion Week Takes to the Runway
MYSTETSKIY ARSENAL The week from 14 to 18 March was fully devoted to fashion and all that entails. Getting ready for the autumn/winter season, local and international designers mingled with the citizens of Kyiv, showing off all of their best ideas in a whirl of colour, fabric and accessories. Taking a break in between the shows, celebrities could be found circulating in the pre-party zone, making themselves an easy catch for the paparazzi. While some hid from the flash of the cameras, others were more than happy to have their photos taken near stands set up by this season’s sponsors: BMW, Schwarzkopf, Maybelline, Asus, PARADOR, Fairmont Grand Hotel Kyiv and Kozyrna Karta.

What’s Hot
I
t was interesting to read lately of the Ukrainian border guards being made-up, in preparation for Euro 2012. The ladies that is, to my understanding there is yet no Russian (yes yes, Ukrainian either) translation for ‘metrosexual’. The logic is pretty clear: your impression of a country starts at the border. The application of this into practice, perhaps, is more questionable – rather than being sent for training in such technicalities as carrying out their duties more effectively, they are being tarted up. I’ve been in and out of this country many times, and I don’t have any especially strong criticism for the lady border guards. However, I do recall one counting the days I had been in the country on her fingers, and in others a general lack of legislative awareness. I also thought, as many have pointed out, that they were already pretty comely. No matter, it’s now been determined that they should look even comelier, even if the finger-counting and legal knowledge-lacking goes on. I’ll skip over what message this sends to Ukrainian society, and move on to what it sends to the ‘foreigners’, as those entering Ukraine are charmingly called: Ukraine is a country of beautiful women, that’s all. Not smart, not well-trained, not even good at their jobs, just beautiful. In other words, rather than repositioning itself in the market, Ukraine has decided to tell people what they already know. It’s no secret that men come here for that. They know it and the women know it. More, the Ukrainian men know it. And their attitudes can be a little mixed. A lot of Ukrainian blokes are lovely and happy to have us here. They are full of questions about the Western World. They grate-

fully accept the outside expertise necessary to make Ukraine a competitive country. They want to practise their English. But there are also a lot, and if I’m honest, more, Ukrainian men who are not so delighted that we’re here at all. Now, if you’re a ‘foreigner’ here (which, and I’m sure other Brits will agree with me, has a negative connotation in our language, ‘furr-e-ner’, as it were), you’re not that hard to spot. That’s why those cheeky little Ukrainian scamps drop their wallets and packets in front of you. It’s also why, as a foreigner, you see other Ukrainian men looking at you on the metro. Are they observing you in a friendly way? Sometimes. Quite often though, are they glaring at you in a way that says, “I know you are here in my country, chasing the same women I’m after. More, I know the women in my country have a liking for foreign men. And I don’t like it one bit.” Rather likely. The other week, I was out strolling with a lovely young lady, when a Ukrainian chap took it upon himself to shoulder barge me and walk on swiftly. Actions do indeed speak louder, and often cause a little more upper-body pain.
Euro 2012 starting to get on people’s minds and filter right down to their fingers as they start tweeting away, with us, as ever, choosing the most interesting for Tweets of the Week. Markus Hermansson @ markus_lkpg Flight from Sweden --> Kiev - check. Hotel - check. Tickets for Sweden-England - check. Euro 2012 - here I come! :) Come on Sweden! Tony Southworth @ ANT_GBR I’ve got tickets for Euro 2012 but looking at the distance between Kiev and Donetsk and cost of flights, I may have made a mistake Lena Sidorova @ LenaVogue I just received a message from UEFA. I’m a volunteer Euro-2012. I had 23 965 competitors. I will meet guests at the airport. Welcome to Kiev. Mr T @ peanuts1961 Euro 2012 tickets confirmed ... Kiev here I come Jaxon Evoy @ PolandBklo Are Poland and Ukraine ready for Euro 2012? Undear Graham, I’ve just read your reply to my letter last week, and I am absolutely appalled. I wrote to you for help and advice, some support even, in this unpleasant situation. And what did you do? You just shot me down in one sentence. Where are your journalistic ethics? Actually, where are your ethics full stop? I’m getting bombarded with sleazy messages from undesirable guys, which is having a very negative impact on my life, and you tell me, basically, to be grateful for that attention? Like that’s the only attention I get? Note to you – I’m young, I’m hot and I’m way out of your league. So why don’t you just stop trying to act cool with your ‘witty’ responses, and do your job in answering people’s problems! Yours, still out of your league, Oksana Dear Oksana A big sorry to you Oksana, I made the wrong call there. Were you on Khreshchatyk today? Did you witness a bald man in stocks being flailed 50 times by an angry young Canadian lady? That was our editor Lana, I guess you know by now who the bald guy is. The same one who then walked down Khreshchatyk with a placard saying ‘Sorry Oksana’. It’s all on YouTube. I did wrong. Yours contritely, Graham

Seems a little slow on that front so far, ladies, we are waiting…
Doppelgangers
I am informed that there is a chap around town who looks very much like me, so if I see you and don’t say hello, it’s my evil twin. Actually, anything bad ‘I’ do, that’s him.
Piles of Black Stuff
First there was snow, then came ice, after slush. Now, there are just mounds of black stuff lying all over town. I’m not even sure what they are, do they melt?

That Said
There’s a video causing a sensation on YouTube of a fight breaking out at an 18th birthday party in Ukraine. Not really a proud moment for international representation…
Football Fans
Apparently England, traditionally one of the best-supported teams at any tournament, have sold only a third of their ticket allocation for Euro 2012. Who’d have thought that paying thousands of Euros a night for accommodation would scare people away???
