This Week in History No Opposition for Klitchko Another Lenin?

Need any further proof that Ukraine is fleeing from the arms of Europe with the speed of a bride who’s just discovered her groom did the stripper on his stag night? And into the arms of Russia, as that very same bride runs back to the ex who used to rough her up a bit, but is now there for her. Yes, Ukraine is knocking up a new monument to Lenin. That’s right, he of near-90-yearsnot-of-this-earth, big Vlad is coming back in, well, obviously, the east. Enough to make all those patriotic westerners quake with violent rage in their vyshyvankas, Krasnoarmeisk will shortly be unveiling their tribute to (almost) everyone’s favourite bald Bolshevik. “This is the first monument to Lenin to be installed in the city since Ukraine’s independence,” the spokeswoman for the Communist Party’s local branch said. And what landmark event has brought about the new landmark? Well, the 142nd anniversary of Lenin’s birth, of course. More pertinently, the statue comes just weeks before thousands of football fans are due to descend on the Donetsk region, where Krasnoarmeisk is located. So, the message to the international community is pretty clear and up there in copper – welcome to the USSR!

Country Pitches In For One Big Pie

Weighing in at 350kg, Ukraine set a record over the weekend for the biggest-ever pizza made in Ukraine and the CIS. Equal in size to a oneroom apartment here in Kyiv, with what would be a far better price tag attached, the pie measured 7.10 metres in diameter, equal to 38 m2. Mammamia Pizza, the venue responsible for the immenso feat, said it took seven of its pizzerias four hours to prepare the 4,950-piece pie. Five hundred and fifty times larger than the pizza they typically serve, those who took in the event just as quickly gobbled up the 200kg of dough, 100kg of cheese and 20kg of pepperoni; very nearly creating another record for fastest pizza eaten!

Despite personal issues that keep her on her back behind bars (sounds like the plot to some highly questionable black market movie), Yulia Tymoshenko seems to care about the future of her country, and has advised the WBC heavyweight champion to run for Kyiv mayor. “I would not recommend that Vitaliy Klitchko turn down the opportunity to participate in the upcoming elections. If he did, the elections wouldn’t happen at all – the Party of Regions would just assign their legionary, Popov,” claims the former PM. Will the boxer and the gas princess be able to save the day? Stay tuned as the Ukrainian fairytale is spun.

27 April 1847

Communist authorities launch Operation Vistula, removing ethnic Ukrainians from the Galicia and Volhynia regions. Nearly 500,000 Ukrainians are made to resettle using military force, and hundreds are killed mercilessly.

2 May 1848

The Supreme Ruthenian Court is founded in Galicia to defend Ukrainians during the 1848 revolution in Austria. The Court demands that the areas of Galicia, Zakarpattia and Bukovyna be united, and then divided in half: the east will go to Ukraine, the west to Poland. An order is also made in this same manifesto that Ukrainian be used in governmental organisations as well as in schools.

3 May 1892

The Kyiv Tramway, the first electric tram system in the whole of the Russian Empire, is unveiled. The first two trams, built by the Russian Struve brothers with American-designed motors, arrive in Kyiv and are tested on Sahaidachnoho Street.

29 April 1918

Covered, Finally

Our politicians often wait for some big date to get off their butts and do something positive for the nation, as it seems far more significant when cutting the big red bow. And this month is no different. The Prime Minister of Ukraine has said, finally, that a sarcophagus is necessary to cover reactor number six in Chornobyl: “At last, over the next year and a half, we will resolve this problem.” It seems rather curious, however, that the government has only just realised that the old nuclear power plant is in need of a casket, and is only now making it a priority. Could it be that the date has something to do with it? The catastrophe did take place 26 years ago on 26 April, which makes all the more reason for our superstitious second in command to take the issue seriously. Various sources quote the concrete confinement chamber will cost anywhere from 740 to 935 million euro, the vast majority of which was raised through a donation drive among world governments last year. Ukraine contributed only 6%. But that doesn’t seem to bother Azarov, who says there are good reasons to “breathe life” into the deserted areas of the old radiation site, as they are “additional work places and additional revenue for our budget”. Never mind the potentially harmful health risks should it remain uncovered.

Pavlo Skoropadskiy is voted Hetman of the Ukrainian State and is christmated at the Saint Sophia Cathedral. Even though he establishes good relationships with many countries, develops a sound Ukrainian educational system and creates an effective governmental administration, he will be accused of being a German collaborator supported by wealthy landowners.

27 April 2010

The Kharkiv Accords is signed. It is a treaty between Ukraine and Russia that allows the Russian Naval base to stay in Crimea until 2042 in exchange for a 30% discount on gas. The agreement is signed between Viktor Yanukovych and Dmitriy Medvedev.

Nadja came about in 2002 as a solo project of multi-instrumentalist Aidan Baker. In the early days, it was mostly Aidan himself, working away on his Kramer. Then in 2005, he was joined by Leah Buckareff, and the two fused to combine electronics and atmospheric vocals with languid powerful riffs and funeral percussion, creating a slow-moving wave of music. The first Nadja album was released that year, Truth Becomes Death, and since then they have gone on to release several more albums and remixes, as well as touring internationally. They’re here this weekend – take them in. Admission is 120hrv. For information call 417-3233.

The Classic Weekend

Kyiv Spring Classical Music Festival, National Philharmonic of Ukraine (Volodymyrskiy Uzviz 2)

Ten years together, Kosheen comes from the combination of Japanese words ‘old’ and ‘new’, which is a dichotomy often evident in much of their music. Made up of producers Markee Substance and Darren Decoder, diva Sian Evans is responsible for the lyrics, and is something of a star among electronic music circles. Playing at the unique Crystal Hall come the end of May, this is the British trio’s first visit to Kyiv. Let’s make sure they receive a proper welcome. Tickets are 350 – 800hrv. For more information call 288-5069.

What can one call Sensation? A party? An understatement. A happening? Again, the word doesn’t quite capture the scale of this undertaking. Sensation is an event – an event like no other. Boasting a top-rated raft of DJ talent, truly extraordinary

Global Gathering has been going off large style here in Kyiv since 2007 – getting bigger every year. This year sees an epic get-together with superstar Nicky Romero, first-timein-Ukraine and chart-topper Jaytech, Finnish dance duo Super8 & Tab – lauded by music magazines Mixmag and DJ Mag, rising star of the global scene Shogun, Austrian Drum & Bass Award-winning duo Camo & Krooked, techno pioneer Marco Bailey, hellraiser DJ Hell, mysterious ninja DJ Jaguar Skills (who blew the place away last year), and many more. The Rake

Exhibition of photography by Oleksandr Kadnikov, Ya Gallery (Khoryva 49b)

16 May – 6 June

Kadnikov very originally creates installations that he then photographs, associating these pictures with symbols of the oppressive Soviet regime. The goal of this extremely profound and thought-provoking exhibition is to remind the audience that the rake (a metaphor for totalitarianism) is not worth stepping on again. As this unique exhibition gives incredible insight into Ukraine as a country today, it’s one that should be taken in by all photography enthusiasts, as well as anyone interested in how to learn from the past. For more information 492-9203.

Apocalypse and Rebirth

24 May – 31 July

Ukrainian and Russian artists Oleh Kulik, Arsen Savadov, Anatoliy Osmolovskiy, Dmytro Gutov and Roman Zhuk are inviting all out for the opening of a brand new art project here in Kyiv. Developing the general idea that differences in age, cultural traditions, education, etc, allow for differing points of view, this group has created a number of objects de’arte as well as a few paintings to explain the idea of “dolce vita” in our globalised world. Is Ozzy On His Way?

Zakk Wylde & Black Label Society (US, rock), Stereo Plaza (Kikvidze 1)

12 May at 20.00

Unfortunately, no. Ozzy is not coming to Ukraine. But his guitarist, Zakk Wylde, almost as popular as Ozzy Osbourne himself, is, and he’s bringing his own project, Black Label Society, with him. When Ozzy decided to take a break in 1992, it was then that Zakk introduced his first band, Pride & Glory. It has since transformed into Black Label Society, and is all about the Darkest Days. In 2009, Classic Rock Magazine listed Zakk, along with only a handful of other musicians, some of the best guitarists of all time. With their most recent studio album hitting all of the major music charts, let’s see if he really is as good as he says. Tickets are 300 – 1200hrv. For more information call 222-8040.

This extremely influential London-based alternative rock band is coming to Kyiv, and is ready to electrify the crowd with yet another impressive concert. They’ll go through their renowned hits such as Every You Every Me, Pure Morning, Meds and Bright Lights with the ever present and critically acclaimed voice of Brian Molko. A far more diversified and experimental Placebo, using synthesisers and all new sounds, is what awaits fans – don’t miss out. Tickets are 300 – 600hrv. For more information call 246-7406.

De Germans are Coming

De/Vision (Germany, synthpop), Sullivan Room (Prorizna 8)

These legends of the German scene have been trailblazing their trendsetting beats for the last quarter of a century. Packing 11 albums, dozens of videos, hundreds of concerts and thousands of fans, they call in on Kyiv on their 25th anniversary tour. Their sound is a truly unique, textured experience, formed of many layers of effects and arrangements. All of it, from the heart. Last year, Kyiv went wild for them, this year they are aiming to go better still... Admission is 220hrv. For information call 066-485-5555.

Which Is It?

WASP (US, heavy metal), Bingo Club (Peremohy Pr 112)

25 May at 20.30

Terrorising the world with their music for 30 years now, WASP is not what or who you think they are. They are not White Anglo-Saxon Protestants, nor do they assert We Are So Perfect as their abbreviation. Going for proper shock value, the group had claimed early on that We Are Sexual Perverts was their real acronym. But then We All Smoke Pot, We Are Satan’s People and We Ate Savoury Pancakes were all options at one time or another. When asked for a straight up answer, the only original member, Blackie Lawless, answered, “We ain’t sure, pal.” Regardless of what they stand for, if you’ve got the guts for a little old school heavy metal, then this is your gig. They are, after all, wandering artists seeking partygoers. Tickets are 350hrv. For more information call 424-2555.

Ukraine Culture

Looking at Ukraine’s concert scene, place for the older generation, as the return here to top up their pension the current world remains largely u goers, as the country continues it’s something,” a resigned Ukrain generations are dissatisfied with the a rock on to these old fogeys. While be getting better over the last couple touring legislation, fortunately decli Ukrainian government doesn’t have only thing they think of is profit, ho they would see that there is a way Here’s a hint guys: cultural growth moolah. And vice versa. I mea

Village Peo

T

he idea for this feature arose after Vice-Premier Minister of Ukraine, Andriy Klyuev, now proudly exMinister, suggested making amendments to the Touring Law, which the Verkhovna Rada approved after a first reading on 18 October. The new clauses featured unbelievably high taxes for promoters and concert organisers, together with the highly appealing possibility of their rights being signed over to local officials. If the law really had been adopted, every sane concert organiser would undoubtedly have left the business, as selling socks by Lisova Metro would have been more profitable. These proposals caused a huge protest among people in the business, with them finally managing to safeguard their rights and force the Rada to decline the law. To understand better what is currently happening on Ukrainian stages, we invited Del Arte PR Company’s Olga Stelmashevska and Yuriy Gulevych to tell us first-hand about the problem.

Who Does What?

First of all, we need to find out how the system of concert organising works. Independently of whether it’s a theatrical performance or a rock concert, there is an event organiser, promoter, venue and an artist’s management. These tiers work together, and if they understand each other, then most probably the event will be successful. What sounds strange is that the Ministry of Culture seems to be out of the loop and only really interested in a bit of tax payola. What it really should do is help, develop, dammit even sponsor various events, trying to bring

15.indb 18

The Interna in what’s hot in the world – rather than ‘stimulate’ the folk and amateur culture that’s everywhere in the country. Seriously, guys jigging about in Ukrainian costume at pageants – who gives one?? What seemed to be an act of patriotism, when Yuschenko started talking about going back to our roots, turned into a disaster when local officials took it too literally, and almost strangled all manifestations of contemporary international arts, aiming purely and simply for “village culture”. What began with the patriotic idea of revitalising Ukrainian culture has led to the point where an artist who decided to sing, god forbid, not in the Ukrainian language, was banned from radio stations and TV channels. They were then told that Ukrainian artists should sing in Ukrainian only. Never mind the fact that for many people in this country, Russian is their first language and the language they express themselves in. So, that’s not an attack on self-expression then? Or that the Ukrainian music market already spends all its money on Okean Elzy. In any case, that market extends to a maximum of 40-odd million people, rather than Russian’s near 300-million. Way to promote Ukrainian talent internationally guys!

The above are just a few examples of why Ukraine, as a stage for artists, doesn’t look too hot right now, and why most of what’s created on the State dollar is just way too ‘folky’. Based on her experience promoting concerts across Ukraine, and being able to compare that to how it’s done abroad, Olga Stelmashevska offers her insight. She tells us that it’s common practice in Europe for the Ministry of Culture and Tourism to be concerned about what’s happening in their country’s cultural sphere, allocating as much funding as needed and helping in any way possible, so that citizens can get the best acts, and their artists access the widest audience. It all leads to an overall cultural boost, attracting tourists and adding cash to the economy. That’s something the Ukrainian government would be wise to learn. For example, I doubt you know that there is a Municipal Brass Orchestra in Kyiv; it can hardly be called a popular one after all. At the same time, a small town somewhere in Europe may have two or more municipal orchestras or bands that play on a decent level and even tour the country. What does that mean? It means that the overall level of culture in Ukraine is far lower than in Europe. For example – can you imag-

t scene, one can see it as the perfect n, as the idols of their youth regularly pensions. What’s really popular in argely unseen to Ukrainian concertntinues its retro love-in. “At least d Ukrainian may say, but younger with the situation, they just can’t get . While the situation had seemed to t couple of years, the recent draft of ely declined, showed clearly that the n’t have a clue about this sphere. The profit, however, if they were smarter s a way to make even more money. growth = growth of economy = more sa. I mean, it’s not that hard!!

People and

national Itch ine Ukrainian firemen organising a band? It seems impossible, but it’s common in Europe. There isn’t even a single Theatre Festival in the country. Olga adds, “We don’t have a cult of culture, and that has turned Ukraine into a very unattractive place for Western celebs to come. First of all, there is uncertainty that the performance will even be held, secondly there is simply too much bureaucracy involved in bringing a star to this country.”

A Third World for Others

So while the government only stops doing nothing to make things difficult, things do keep on running thanks only to private companies and promoters. Their hard work has eventually resulted in Western management starting to notice Ukraine and consider adding us to their touring routes. “We finally made a hole in the wall. Even when Ukrainian concert organisers were offering 100% pre-pay, usually management would refuse as they were sure that there would be problems,” says Yuriy. But little by little, international singers and artists coming to the country have started spreading their experience among colleagues. Through word of mouth,

15.indb 19

Ukraine’s reputation has improved. However, if the organisers did manage to repair the reputation problem, they still couldn’t resolve some other issues such as roads, border crossings, copyright and media piracy. That’s something the government needs to work on. “Artists have fixed fees that vary country to country,” Olga explains. “Knowing about Ukrainian bureaucracy at the borders and the state of roads, the celeb’s management either think twice about coming to Ukraine or bump up the fees. For example, in the time spent on a ride from Moscow to Kyiv, a singer or a band can visit three cities in Europe, earning much more than a concert in Kyiv. And that seriously affects ticket prices. A ticket to Sting’s concert in Vilnius, with accommodation added in, costs far less than the Kyiv concert-only equivalent. Draw your own conclusion.” And we return to the initial problem – the government’s unwillingness to do anything and its ignorance in the cultural sphere. It seems to be a pretty implacable situation. Yuriy smoothes the tension, adding, “What we are trying to do is create a sort of community of promoters in the country to work together. With our first protest, we managed to influence the government and persuade

them to reject the amendments to the Touring Law. We may even create a sort of symbol or a mark to put on posters, so that people know that this performance comes with a sign of quality. But that’s going to take some time.” Until this miracle happens, and the cancellation of concerts keeps taking place, we, as ordinary concert-goers, should remember a couple of simple rules. First of all, don’t buy tickets anywhere else but authorised ticket offices. There are plenty of them in the city, so it’s easy to buy a ticket in advance, rather than score from a suspicious stranger right before the concert. In case the concert is cancelled, you can always get your money back, as long as the ticket was purchased through proper channels. The best place of all is the ticket office of the venue hosting the event. While the lives of promoters and concert organisers seem to be pretty hard, they are all ready to continue bringing joy to those seeking something other than the Scorpions or Deep Purple. On many levels, it’s a tough gig, but there are plenty of interesting stories to share. Yuriy and Olga have their fair share, such as Julio Iglesias spending the couple of days before his concert with lovely ladies in a presidential suite, not even leaving for a minute, or Roxette coming to Ukraine from Russia almost frozen to death. And then there’s the Russian stars’ bloated gig-riders, including Mashyna Vremeni requiring a whole carriage when travelling by train. But that’s a completely different story for a different article. Meanwhile, rock on concertgoers, keep on concert-promoters and step up Ukrainian government!

On the Sofa With...

A Man

for All Seasons Life After The Drift

Full of positive impressions from the auditions, he tells us that real actortalents are usually found in very strange places. “Let’s say, although this guy just sells jeans at the market, he still deserves to act in films,” shares Levytsky. To gather unknown Ukrainian talents and show that Ukrainian movies can be profitable are two main concerns of the director. The second part might provoke sceptics to smirk, but Levytsky sounds so selfassured, saying, “Ukrainian cinematography is not just some abstract concept, it’s the real deal.” He has tried to prove it already. Six years ago, the first Ukrainian thriller, The Drift, was released. Planned as his diploma work, it eventually grew into a full-length film, and was a paramount moment for the Ukrainian film industry. Unfortunately, critics were quick to find flaws. Levytsky can laugh about it today, saying that “every young film director has to survive his Drift”. The new project, Shadows of Not Forgotten Ancestors, draws on all his former experience and builds up a new image of movie making. “We just take an American stencil and pour our Ukrainian entity into it. It is not surprising that the American methods of producing films are most effective. Nowadays it is like the chemical formula for water. It is immutable. We will just give this formula a Ukrainian ingredient.” Levytsky’s secret of success is as easy as ABC. Just do everything by yourself! Be a jack-of-all-trades! It’s something that will not only save you money, but will also make the movie all yours. And it really will, especially if you combine the duties of director, producer and scriptwriter. Furthermore, Levytsky usually tests his proficiency by creating additional obstacles for himself. For instance, in spite of having generous budgets, he tries to make quality movies with minimum expense. “It is good training, believe me. My next movie will look as if it costs the earth, so you will be shocked to find out that the real price is ten times less.”

Ukrainian cinematography has a real, true-hearted hero, and he has come from a background of directing music videos to the heights of feature films. Lyubomyr Levytsky, a do-all of the home film industry, reveals the secrets of his future flicks and talks about the development of moviemaking in Ukraine.

I

t is not a secret that young Ukrainian actors feel hard-done-by when it comes to Ukrainian movies. The reason is quite simple – we just don’t produce many. So, when a mass casting process recently began in Ukraine, everybody’s ears pricked up and they hot-footed it along. A new movie made in the Ukrainian language? Moreover, it’s a mystic thriller, which will premier in Ukraine and then be broadcast in Poland, Russia and the US’s biggest Ukrainian cultural centres. It sounds more than tempting for aspiring actors, who have continued knocking on the doors of these castings, running all over Ukraine. We catch the director of this mystic movie, Lyubomyr Levytsky, as soon as he gets a free minute after a Lviv casting attracting 666 people. The mysticism has already begun…

Keep the Secret

This Ukrainian do-all man once read the book The Million Dollar Story, and it changed his life enormously. Moreover, two months of a film course in Germany, and assisting Ukrainian directors afterwards, created in Levytsky’s mind the idea that he can succeed in the sphere of directing. “I like to do everything very honestly. Besides that, I create things low on budget, but high on quality.” These both simple and difficult rules to adhere to make Levytsky the man-for-all-seasons needed everywhere. One of his scripts was even read by Luc Besson’s team. His comedy action film, The Loan Bank, starring both Ukrainian and Russian movie stars, is going to be released in Russia soon. When we wonder what took him so long to get to feature films, Levytsky just shrugs his shoulders saying with an earnest face, “I was writing scripts.” He assures us that success is gained only when there is a decent theme, something gripping both for the local and international community. Shadows of Not Forgotten Ancestors is such a theme, created on a mythical premise. “Once I met a molfar (Carpathian wizard) who shared a tremendous secret with me. He made me promise not to tell it to anybody in words, only in images.” Levytsky believes in mystical things himself, as he was brought up in the Carpathian Mountains where links to the beyond are really intense. Maybe that is the reason why both The Drift and Shadows of Not Forgotten Ancestors have this background. The latter will be created this summer, in 40 days of work, and will be released later this year. Hopefully, the secrets Levytsky will reveal won’t cause the end of the world as is predicted right at that time!

I do know that for people here in Kyiv, life remains tough. Prices are high and rising, pay low and stagnating. Finding a good job is a real struggle, keeping it another. Salaries are paid, late and the tax system turns in on itself to find additional complications each year. The idea of nationalism here is a non-concept. For starters, it’s simply too diffuse a country. Go to Lviv, if you will. Everyone in Ukraine will, given half a chance, rave on at great length at the wonder of it. What many of them don’t realise is that, if you’ve been to Krakow, Prague, Bratislava even, Lviv is nice but not mind-blowing. And it’s basically Poland. Then, go to Kharkiv – a vast, Soviet-style city full of monuments and large buildings. There you’ll see signs in Russian, they’ll speak to you in Russian in Puzata Hata. It’s basically Russia. Here in Kyiv, we have the fusion of both worlds and yet still no flagpole on which to hang Ukrainian pride. This is still a city feeling the effects of the credit crisis, ringed by unfinished buildings with most just running around trying to access the money that is there, but often in pockets pretty high up. Like the guys dressed as Bart Simpson in Maidan and the women hawking crabs on Hydro Park, the majority are just trying to survive. And few have got time to combine that with making the effort to speak Ukrainian. Ukrainian nationalism is a luxury best enjoyed from a considerable distance.

Dear Graham, With Euro 2012 just around the corner, I was wondering whether the Ukrainian government was planning on tackling the issue of inadequate public transit? I’m a 15-year-old student and can assure you that being crammed into a bus with sweaty and pushy senior citizens isn’t much fun. I’m pretty sure visiting football fans who are putting down substantial sums of money travelling to Kyiv won’t be thrilled by the public transit either. With all due respect, Matthieu Dear Matthieu, Why not look at the positives of the situation? They’re not all sweaty senior citizens, are they? There are some lovely young ladies out there too. here do you go if you want to find a proud Ukrainian? Any number of countries, with the exception of Ukraine. Canada is particularly notable: with over 1.5 million of its populace tracing lineage to here, you can find entire Ukrainian communities. Across Canada, there are swathes of the Ukrainian diaspora, speaking Ukrainian, wearing Ukrainian folk dress, eating traditional dishes. And they can get quite irate if you insult anything Ukrainian, as I’ve discovered. They are quick to cite history and Ukrainian persecution to make a point. Of course, those atrocities can never be justified and should be remembered. But, they are not the business of everyday life here in Ukraine. Language is, and the fact that Kyiv and the east remain resolutely Russian speaking, is a source of irritation to many expat Ukrainians. I was in a lavatory the other week, when a chap moved out of the way of the sink. I gave a ‘spasibo’. He, somewhat aggressively, spat back ‘bud laska’, daring me to reply. I didn’t, because I didn’t care. I try to speak Russian in as much of my everyday life as possible – as a visitor here, it’s wonderful to have the opportunity to speak the language of Tolstoy, Chekhov, Dostoevsky, etc. A Russian language teacher friend of mine, fluently Ukrainian speaking, described the Ukrainian language as a hotpotch of Russian, Polish, German and English. I don’t know the language to say that’s true, but she is a reliable source.

Take Me Out!

A Taste of Venice In the Heart of Kyiv

W

alter is a well-known restaurateur in town, as his place down on Sahaidachnoho was popular for many years. But some time ago it closed down for reasons unknown, much to many a fan's chagrin. So it was with great relief that a few months back his name appeared above the door of a place on Sofiyska. Not only was this great man back on the scene, but he was also more conveniently located for many of us.

Warm Greetings

Walter is a true restaurateur – he cares about his guests, and he cares very much about the food they eat. When you enter his place, he’s very likely to greet you with a warm smile and a firm handshake, whether he knows you or not. He does so as I walk in, and shows me to my table where Katya is already waiting. It’s been a hard few weeks, with lots of office stuff to take care of during the day, and too many events to attend in the evenings. And while this is still work for me, I am really looking forward to a relaxing meal with my good lady. Our waitress, who happens to be called Uliana, brings us menus and a wine list, and leaves us to make our choices. Before doing that, however, I take a look around at the place. This is exactly my style – simple Mediterranean décor with cream self-coloured walls, wooden tables and chairs with plain white table cloths, some sofa seating, and photos and paintings of Venice on the walls along with some Venetian masks. It all makes for a relaxed and comfortable ambience, and while it may be raining in Kyiv on this particular evening, it’s quite easy to imagine a gondola on a Venetian canal waiting outside.

15.indb 30

In Glasgow we say that if you want a good Chinese restaurant, you go to the place where the Chinese eat. Switching to Kyiv, this same logic applies. Switching cuisine to Italian, following the same logic, you can’t find a better restaurant than Walter’s. As soon as you walk in the door you just know you’re going to sample authentic, quality Italian cuisine due to the fact that almost everyone in the place is speaking Italian.

Turning to the menu, I see it is lengthy. But upon closer inspection, all Italian. And that’s a good thing. With diffuse selections in each of the following categories – Cold Appetisers, Salads, Exclusive Vegetable Dishes, Hot Appetisers, Soups, Risotta, Fish, Meat, Pork, and Poultry – much of it sounds tantalising, which makes for very difficult choosing. Just at that moment, like a knight in shining armour, Walter decides to descend upon our table, asking if he can be of any help. Katya and I ask in union: “What would you recommend?”

Good Recommendations

The first thing Walter wants to recommend is the wine. We’re probably going to eat meat, but, rightly or wrongly, we’ve also decided we want white. He quickly tells us the Piccini Orvieto (240hrv) is a good choice: “It’s dry, but not too dry. Light and fruity.” We’re happy to go with that. He then asks us some questions about our culinary preferences, and based on that, recommends the Carpaccio di Filetto con salsa d’Uovo al curry (yes, carpaccio in curry sauce) to start, and Tagliata alla Ruccola e Radicchio for the main course for Katya, and for me he suggests Cocktail di Gameri and Filetto in Teglia con Foie Gras. Katya’s happy to go with his recommendations, but I hesitate for a moment having seen T-Bone steak on the menu. In the end, I decide against the steak, as after all this is a review of an Italian restaurant, and steak can be had anywhere. The wine arrives quickly, and is perfectly chilled. A quick sip tells me it’s exactly as Walter described it, and a very good choice. A basket of bread is also brought to the table, and we munch on that while we wait for our starters to arrive. Now, I like a prawn cocktail. I’ve always been a big
