What’s Up Vertical Power Indeed

There are a multitude of reasons not to be facing an economic crisis. Say, strong economy, robust growth, stable inflation, sound leadership, market investment and so on. However, the reason Ukraine is not facing the aforementioned is, apparently, because of ‘strong vertical of power’, which we do occasionally hear of here and in Russia. The phrase, which doesn’t really translate into English (although that doesn’t seem to stop them trying), means essentially an effective leadership hierarchy. That’s what we have, according to Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Head of the Party of Regions, Serhiy Tihipko, on Channel 5. Tihipko wants us to revere his magical ‘vertical of power’ and ignore recent IMF warnings of slowing growth due to waning exports, and stubbornly high inflation. Buoyed up, he went on to inform that the government had managed to create a good margin of safety, and there was no threat to the macroeconomic situation. Good ‘ole Serj clearly hopes all this buzz-speak will help us forget his recent flip-flop over taxes where he initially suggested the ‘rich tax’ on apartments larger than 200 square metres, but later lowered that to 120. Perhaps for a little more vertical power in his bank account.

Holy Inquisition in Kyiv

After detaching themselves from the Catholic Church a year ago, the Byzantine Catholic Patriarchate is showing its true colours, and those colours ain’t pretty. Directing their venom at specific social groups, they've launched an attack on the gay and lesbian community. Learning of the gay gathering called Kyiv Pride to be held here in the capital on 20 May, they’ve sent out their messengers armed with leaflets and brochures to warn the good citizens of Kyiv about the danger. They have even organised protests, seven to be exact, the last of which is to be held on 17 May on Mykhalivska Ploshcha, to unite believers against the ‘blue and pink’ plague that has covered the country. Having got hold of one of these leaflets, the Patriarchate warns that homosexuality destroys all moral, national and Christian values. Speaking of the Criminal Procedure Code, which is preparing to legalise homosexuality in Ukraine, it says, “Homosexuality is linked to the Department of Juvenile Justice, which will take your children away without holding court or producing any real guilt.” It goes on to say this very department “will sell [your children] abroad into sexual slavery, first of all to homosexuals and paedophiles, and even for organs.” Translating word for word, we’re not really sure how they’ve made the connection between the Department of Juvenile Justice and homosexuality. But then the church, any church, doesn’t always make a whole lot of sense when it comes to what’s right and what’s wrong. Eating shellfish, for example, is apparently an abomination too (Lev 11:10).

Sex-business Exposed

Although there are many who are actively trying to reverse the stereotype of Ukraine as a country big into the sex trade, we have just uncovered a case that makes it glaringly obvious this is not always the case. For starters, police in Yalta, Crimea, recently arrested a 50-year-old Turkish man suspected of organising sex tours to said location. Now, a new story, this time in Kosovo, has just popped up, implicating seven Ukrainian and three Albanian women in prostitution and human trafficking.

She’s All That

Yulia Tymoshenko continues to receive support from more and more people in her fight to be free. In fact, the incarcerated former PM has garnered so much empathy from European leaders they are willing to do just about anything to help her. The solution, as they see it, is to boycott EURO 2012, saying something like “you ignore our claims for democracy, we ignore your championship”. Yes, diplomacy is sometimes a tricky thing, and often includes a little give and take. In this case, due to the inept attention she has received here at home, not to mention the beatings she’s been subjected to while in prison, our nosewise politicians have been asked that Tymoshenko obtain medical help abroad. In the case that this does not happen, Germany’s hard-hitting Angela Merkel has announced she will not be attending the EURO. Deputy of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Karl Georg Wellmann, quoted Merkel saying she “would feel uncomfortable sitting nearby official representatives of Ukraine” if the decision was not made before the beginning of the championship. In the meantime, Didier Burkhalter, head of the Department of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland, also announced his country's readiness to provide treatment for Tymoshenko. Should this not happen, however, he will not be boycotting the championship, saying, “Threats won’t solve the problem.” That may well be the case. However, democratic appeals don’t seem to be doing the trick either. In answer to all of the noble offers of help from European countries, Genprokuratura of Ukraine has had one response and one response only: our legislation system does not allow for medical care of Ukrainian prisoners abroad. (Although it would probably be just as applicable if the word abroad was completely removed from their justification). Nevertheless, Germany keeps on insisting, with Wellman suggesting that a little motivation, in the way of the European Association Agreement, is all that is needed. Britain, on the other hand, has metaphorically washed their hands of Ukraine, downright refusing to come to the championships. Prince William, for example, was spotted in South Africa at the World Cup two years ago, with plans to come to Ukraine as well. Those plans, however, have been changed, citing the same cause as everyone else: Tymoshenko. Between political warnings and silent protests, the outcome seems more and more predictable: our Ukrainian politicians will sit on their high horse (read: VIP boxes) alone and friendless.

Exposed by local policemen during an undercover investigation called Operation Night at one of the local hotels, the raid uncovered a whole slew of illegal transactions taking place. With no shortage of clients coming and going throughout all hours of the night, prices for services varied from 60 – 200 euros. Police have since closed down the hotel, and have promised to continue investigations into other sex-trade businesses in the region. But it’s only one of dozens, if not hundreds, of schemes going on in and around the European continent. The Indian Embassy in Kyiv, for example, continues to be dismayed at the number of Ukrainian women taking their business down south. But then

as a business that can be extremely profitable, some stereotypes are harder to change than others; most often because they are the truth.

EURO 2012 Rehearsal Complete

With EURO 2012 fast approaching, what could be better than our own in-house rehearsal with the Ukrainian Cup? Of course, the scope of this particular football competition was much smaller than the one to take place in Ukraine and Poland next month. But still, it’s provided for an interesting prelude to the main event. Competing for the Cup at the newly renovated Olympiyskiy Stadium on 6 May, Shakhtar Donetsk and Metalurh Dontesk fought to the end. It was such a massive event, the city ended up closing both entrances and exists of the two surrounding metro stations (Palats Sportu and Olympiyskiy) for three hours. While the former worked as a transit station before and after the big event, trains going through the latter stopped not at all. More than that though, Kyiv buses had their entire schedules rerouted for the day. Paralyzing the city centre with championship fever, it’s something we should get used to; at least for the upcoming international event. Through it all, however, a winner was named, and even though it was a bit of a nail-biter at times, Shakhtar won 2:1 fair and square. This is the eighth time this particular Donetsk team has been victorious – good job guys, rehearsal complete.

The Government Opts Out of Aerosvit

The Ukrainian government has plans to sell its 22.394 stake in the country’s second largest air carrier, Aerosvit, according to the State Property Fund of Ukraine last week. Like children fighting over a toy, the shareholders, who also include GenAvia Invest (with a 25% minus one share stake) and Privat Group (with a 52% stake), can’t come to an agreement. Perhaps with the Ukrainian government out of the way, a transaction that stands to make them 4.336 million hryvnia ($542,000), the company might actually soar to new heights in terms of customer service. But then, with the nickname Aeros**t, they really couldn’t get any worse.

CBN, the Crazy Breaking News agency, recently posted a video of an Unidentified Flying Object hoveringover the cityofKyiv. Now,don’tbealarmed! We’ll keep you up to date as more flying objects appear.

Church of the Tithes (Desyatynna Church), the first stone church in Kyiv, is sanctified. By order of Vladimir the Great, it is built by Byzantine and local workers, and is named in honour of the Dormition of the Theotokos. Everyone in the area is ordered to pay a tenth of his salary for its construction and operational costs.

Shoes for a Giant

Ihor Vovkovinskiy has always had problems with his tootsies. Standing 2.34 metres you can see why. It looks like Reebok, however, has stepped up, as they have offered to create a pair of size 26 sneakers to his exact specifications. Ihor and his mother Svitlana Laden moved to Rochester, Minnesota from Ukraine when he was just 7-years-old. Diagnosed with a condition called pituitary gigantism, at that time, in 1989, he was already 1.82 metres and almost 91kg. Officially recognised as the tallest man in America, and subsequently President Barack Obama’s biggest supporter, the 29-yearold says, “Up until six years ago, I used to consider my life pretty normal. [But now] doing the simplest thing is excruciating.” Lucky for him, the athletic footwear company have opted to take up his plight, and now Vovkovinskiy is eager for the day when he might walk the dog, get groceries and go window-shopping. While the price tag of these new high tops could be anywhere from $12,000 - $20,000, they're going to let him do just that.

15 May 1859

Panas Saksagansky, a prominent Ukrainian actor and theatre director, is born. Four of Saksagansky’s siblings pursue a career in theatre. The staging of Schiller’s The Robbers and Shakespeare’s Othello are among his most popular works as director.

The Mechniсkov Odesa State National University is founded by edict of Tsar Alexander II of Russia. Famous for its scientific library, it is the largest and oldest in all of Ukraine, with 3.6 million volumes issued from the 15th century to the 21st century.

13 May 1913

Ihor Sikorsky serves as test pilot for the world’s first four-engine airplane, S-21 Russky Vityaz, which he called Le Grand.

16 May 2004

Ukrainian singer Ruslana Lyzhychko wins Eurovision, with her song Wild Dances. Second place goes to Serbia & Montenegro in their debut entry, while third place goes to Greece, fourth place to Turkey, and fifth place to Cyprus. Held in Istanbul, Turkey, it is only the second time Ukraine has participated in this competition.

Stray Dogs Get New Advocate

Pamela Anderson is the newest in a long line of supporters against the cruel treatment stray animals have received in Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities. Having written to Michel Platini, UEFA President, the sex bomb asked that he give even more publicity to the issue, saying, “UEFA should be a role model for all parties involved in this event and take a stand in favour of protecting Ukraine’s homeless animals.” While UEFA has shone a spotlight on the situation, this is not a new problem, and certainly not one that has come up simply because of the football championships to be held in just under a month’s time (see last week’s issue of What’s On, feature: 2,000 Animals). It is, however, one that has become more and more prominent on the world stage because of the EURO finals.

Head Over Heels

Turandot (opera in 3 acts), National Opera Theatre of Ukraine (Volodymyrska 50)

16 May at 19.00

This opera in Italian is one of Giacomo Puccini’s most well-known works. He wasn’t able to finish it before his death in 1924, and so composer and pianist Franco Alfano took up the torch and completed it two years later. In Persian, Turandot means ‘the daughter of Turan’, which is where the opera is based. It tells the story of unlucky Prince Calaf who falls head over heels in love with the cold self-assuming Princess Turandot. She sends him on a wild goose chase of deeds needing done. Will that do the trick? Or is she just using him for her own entertainment? Tickets are 20 – 200hrv. For more information call 279-1169. : What's On Recommended

Ozzy On His Way?

Zakk Wylde & Black Label Society (US, rock), Stereo Plaza (Kikvidze 1)

12 May at 20.00

Unfortunately, no. Ozzy is not coming to Ukraine. But his guitarist, Zakk Wylde, almost as popular as Ozzy Osbourne himself, is, and he’s bringing his own project, Black Label Society, with him. When Ozzy decided to take a break in 1992, it was then that Zakk introduced his first band, Pride & Glory. It has since transformed into Black Label Society, and is all about the Darkest Days. In 2009, Classic Rock Magazine listed Zakk, along with only a handful of other musicians, as some of the best guitarists of all time. With their most recent studio album hitting all of the major music charts, let’s see if he really is as good as he says. Tickets are 300 – 1200hrv. The Crystal Coming

Crystal Castles (Canada, electro), Crystal Hall (Dniprovskiy Spusk 1)

19 September at 20.00

Comprising Ethan Kath and Alice Glass, the two Crystal Castles originals met when Glass, then 15, was singing in a local punk band. Kath asked Glass to add vocals to some tracks he had been working on. They recorded them, uploaded them and forgot all about them. However, through the Internet, these songs found their audience, and offers from record labels started pouring in. Having gone on to release many EPs and two eponymous albums, in 2008 and 2010, their debut album even crashed into NME’s Top 100 Greatest Albums of the Decade, at a highly respectable #39. Calling in on Kyiv, at the aptly named Crystal Hall, go and see what got them there! Tickets are from 350hrv. For more information call 288-5069.

Just Another Version

Oleksandr Ponamarev (pop), Crystal Hall (Dniprovskiy Spusk 1)

22 May at 21.00

Since his début performance at the Chervona Ruta festival in 1993, Ukrainian singer Oleksandr Ponamarev has remained one of the country’s most popular and talented songsters. Thanks to his beautiful voice, he holds the award for Best Singer of the last 20 years from YUNA held earlier this year. But even more than that, the lyrics he sings and the music he plays are not the “pop” to which we’ve become accustomed among the current Ukrainian music scene. Presenting his acoustic programme this evening, called Another Version, we’re about to see yet another side of the Ukrainian superstar. Admission is 150 – 1,000hrv. For more information call 538-0100.

Arsenale 2012

The Best of Times, The Worst of Times. Rebirth and Apocalypse in Contemporary Art, Mystetskiy Arsenal (Lavrska 10-12)

24 May – 31 July

Taking only the best features from the world famous Venice Biennale, Mystetskiy Arsenal is producing the first ever Biennale Ukraine. The long name given to the art fair aims at highlighting the long history of Ukrainian art, which has risen out of the ashes from its fair share of misery and

decay. Divided into four parts, The Restless Spirit draws inspiration from myths and legends, In the Name of Order investigates the rationalism behind the power that dominates our culture, Flesh analyses the human body along with its desires, and finally The Unquiet Dream focuses on nightmares and ineluctable twists of faith. Arsenale has just recently posted an entire list of participants. Check them out at www.arsenale2012.com/ participants/?lang=eng.

We’re With You Too

Red Hot Chili Peppers (US, funk, rock), Olympic Stadium (V Vasylkivska 55a)

25 July at 19.00

More than just legends of rock, the gods of funk are headed to Kyiv for the first time ever this summer! Bringing their most recent album called I’m With You, it took some time to release this, their 10th EP. It has been, however, well worth the wait. Headlining various festivals and playing their own sold-out tours for over 20 years now, the guys have won 7 Grammys and continue to pump out some top tunes. The time has come for Ukraine to enjoy the antics of Anthony, Flea, Chad and Josh, in what will no doubt be one of the biggest concerts of the year. Tickets are 600 – 800hrv. The term “supergroup” stared appearing more readily in the late 60s, meaning a rock group made up of musicians already popular for their work in other bands. This particular group is made up of bassist Billy Sheehan (Talas, Mr Big, Niacin), guitarist Tony Macalpine (popular for his multiple solo projects) keyboardist Derek Sherinian (Dream Theatre, Billy Idol, Alice Cooper) and of course, drummer Portnoy (Dream Theatre, Transatlantic, Neal Morse). There’s bound to be something for all. Take it in. Tickets are 350 – 600hrv. For more information call 424-2555.

In 1691, Henry Purcell created a music-drama that blends humour, slapstick and sensational effects. His King Arthur tells a story about a war of two kings who are so keen on both getting power as well as winning the love of a blind princess, they will stop at nothing for it. Performed by the Offertorium Ensemble, Collegium Kyiv, the Vox Animae Choir and number of soloists, this exciting musical explores the notion of Britishness at the end of the 17th century, and is a fabulous way to become better acquainted with Purcell’s infamous work. Admission is 40hrv. For more information call 594-1063.

J GRETER ART CENTRE Anastasia Podervyanska, Inna Khasileva and Nastassia Grygorieva, three young Ukrainian artists, opened their joint exhibition on 26 April at the semi-new Greter Art Centre. Revealing the essence of life in paintings, the opening gathered a good number of people, who also had the opportunity to speak to the artists themselves. Cleaning Up the City

PEIZAZHNA ALLEY Kyiv activists from Zrobymo Ukrainu Chystoyu got their friends together on 28 April to clean up the mess left by inconsiderate litterbugs along Peizazhna Alley over the last year. We caught them in action where the InterContinental team together with those from Kyiv Yoga Studio, Watsons and Vozdvizhenskiy Hotel were hard at work. It took some time to get the rubbish in the bins, but thanks to all those who worked long hard hours, it was mission accomplished! Great job, everyone! NATIONAL OPERA OF UKRAINE On 25 April, the Grand Final of National’s Queen of Ukraine 2012 pageant was held at the Opera House with all of the pomp and grandeur you might expect from such a majestic undertaking. Starting in March of this year, 26 participants from various Ukrainian cities began appearing on the First National Channel in preparation for the one big night. After five tours to all of the towns from which the girls originate, the jury made up its mind: it had to be Simferopil beauty, Angelica Pomutina. Along with the title Queen of Ukraine 2012, a vast array of other great prizes also became hers, as well as her free ticket to the Miss Model of the World competition.

TRIPTYCH GALLERY Anna Kryvolap’s most recent art project was presented to Ukrainian audiences on 25 April at the city’s Tryptych Gallery on Andriivskiy. The abstractionism found in the human landscape that is Anna’s Variations was what first attracted everyone to the opening. The vibrant colours and positivism underlined in each piece, however, is what kept them there. Charmed by the art, you too can have a look until the end of May.

Odesa back on the market, or have just never had the certain question popped. And here they are, out in the discos, forced back onto the market or never having been off it. They are a little like Andriy Shevchenko in their own way – shades of former glory. They still look good, still svelte, a little more make-up than yesteryear. They probably even tell themselves they are better than they were a few years ago, as they now have extra experience and maturity – little knowing how most men are averse to both. They are gradually sliding out of their prime, like a car with a disengaged handbrake rolling down a gentle decline. And yet, they remain within the perimeters of Beauty City, What happens when you get to the outer limits though? The girls past their early 30s, out at clubs, still on the market for whatever reason. Look, ladies, this isn’t the west, this isn’t Sex and the City. Over there it’s ok for women in their 30s to do just what you’re doing; over here, it’s just not. If you are a lady past early 30s here, when it comes to clubs, it’s time to get out of the game; rather than stand and gather dust like an unloved lampshade in the territory you ruled ten years ago.

Hi Graham, I’ve been reading a bit of your recent writing and hearing a few bits and pieces about you. So, you love the Russian language, have been spotted about town wearing a Lenin badge and, from what I hear, are going to Russia on your summer holidays. Moreover, you don’t much care for Lviv, rather dislike the Ukrainian language and actually seem not to much like anything about Ukraine that isn’t similar to Russia. So, I was wondering, why don’t you just clear off and go to that terrible Russia – you deserve each other! Yours, Proud Ukrainian Dear Proud Ukrainian, Hey, easy there big guy, I like Ukraine plenty much. True I also like Russia and, if to be honest, I think anti-Russian sentiment is a bit saaaaaaaad. You know, a smaller country disliking its bigger neighbour – cliché central. As for Ukrainian nationalism, well, to my understanding much of it seems to derive from this very anti-Russianism and a lot of it is just trying too hard. You’re a new country, give yourselves some time and a national identity will emerge. Don’t try to force it. And don’t say ‘Come, we are in Ukraine, let’s drink vodka and insult Russians’, without appreciating the irony. By the way, I wear that Lenin badge both ironically and post-modernly. So there! Yours, Comrade Phillips

I

t’s an uncomfortable idea to any sentient human being. That is, that we have a ‘peak’ age, when we are ‘in our prime’, and after that it’s ‘all downhill’. I recall an excerpt from Elizabeth Taylor’s biography when, in the 80s, her mother was asking a group of her own friends when they peaked, before turning the same question on a piqued Elizabeth. Elizabeth believed her own was yet to come. This proved not quite to be the case. However, what’s the situation on the ground here in Kyiv when it comes to that pertinent question of peak? Now I don’t write this from any particular aesthetic high ground – I’m just a bald guy in his mid-30s. But let’s be blunt here, looks are, generally speaking, more important when it comes to ladies. That’s also not to say that ‘past peak’, as it were, the fairer sex still can’t look lovely. If you’re in love, loved even, your face is adorned by a glow that is its own eternal peak. However, if you pass peak without such fortune, it’s a bit bleak. Go to clubs in Kyiv and what do you see (ignoring for this article the few hookers): some girls in their teens up to their mid-twenties. They look fantastic, they are all jazzed up, the night loves them, and because the average age for female marriage in Ukraine is 23, many of these girls will step into a club for perhaps their final time, as a single lady, at the age of 21 or 22. So let’s cast our demographic upwards to the next bracket: girls in their mid-to-late twenties. These girls have either had a brief marriage, perhaps at 18, over at 23/24, and are

Take Me Out!

Every time a TUCC event comes around, there’s always a heated discussion in the What’s On office as to who should attend: will it be Paul and Lana, or Katya and I? But when Praha came up as the next destination, there was no discussion. It was Katya and I and that was it. After all, it was where we had our wedding reception, and we’d not been back since. So when the evening arrived, we headed there with a sense of excitement, mixed with a hint of nostalgia.

P

raha, in my opinion, is the most beautiful restaurant in Kyiv, in the most beautiful location. It is a beautiful classical building, with exquisitely tasteful décor, set in a beautiful park in front of a lake. In fact, with its pontoon terrace, one could even say it is on the lake. Internally, it has a lovely glass-fronted area on the ground floor, and upstairs it has another large room overlooking the lake. It’s quite stunning. I, of course, already know this, so I’m here to find out what’s the best food they can provide.

Analysis and Appetisers

The TUCC event is located in a smaller room on the second floor, which I suppose is reserved for private functions. As we enter, Katya spots Katya Zinchenko, who appears to be waiting for Mark Burden, and runs off to chat to her. At the same time, I get into a deep conversation on the state of the economy with TUCC President, Terry Pickard. As we chat, rather pessimistically it has to be said, various members join our throng (including Mark Burden, with whom we’ll be sharing a table), and soon all are present and we’re ready to begin.
