What’s Up
Back in the USSR? Stalin Pis
Those crazy Ukrainian nationalists Bratstvo are at it again, putting up statues of Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin in Lviv and here in Kyiv. That’s right, you heard it, statues of Stalin! Of course, these guys being as wacky and irreverent as they are, it’s a urinating Stalin. You probably rejoin this article after having stopped for several minutes, in shock at their bold audacity. They’ve really gone there – they’ve put up a couple of (rather well made) golden monuments of a long-dead dictator who pretty much everyone acknowledges as a bad guy. Actually, even those living in Ukraine who class themselves as Russian generally aren’t fans of Stalin. They do have a bit of a soft spot for Big Vlad, however, as we reported a couple of weeks ago when a new statue of him was erected in Krasnoarmiysk, a little town in the Donetsk region. So, a statue of him taking a leak would certainly have rubbed some the wrong way. But, no, this is Bratstvo, half-hearted radicals who just love seeing their picture in the paper but stop some distance short of ever actually making a point. Still, they gave some tourists a good photo opportunity in Kyiv, until the statue was removed.
A Facebook Revolution?
As we all know, Yanukovych had his first chance to become president back in 2004, but was ousted by what is now known as the Orange Revolution. Sadly, he still made it to the presidency, but since then a whole new form of organising protests has revealed itself – social networking. As witnessed last year in the Arab Spring (which covered various countries) and more recently in Russia, people can now organise themselves in huge numbers online and take to the streets en mass. As Yanukovych ravishes the country, we here at What’s On have often wondered why similarly organised protests have not yet taken place here. Well, now it seems that ‘yet’ is the operative word as Facebook users are posting photos of the protests in Moscow (like the one shown) and asking if Ukraine is next. It’s sure to be.

Looking back at some of the events that have taken place in Ukraine recently, we can’t help but wince at the quickly closing doors of the European Union, which could slam shut forever if a few decisions aren’t made, and fast. With European leaders threatening Ukrainian statesmen with sanctions, Russian power-holders can’t help but rub their hands with glee – just one more reason our face muscles haven’t relaxed in weeks! Leonid Slutskiy, head of the Duma Committee of CIS Affairs, believes Ukraine will soon come to a decision on the Customs Union and Eurasian Economic Community, and that decision will be one favourable to the Kremlin. “I think Ukraine will participate in both the Customs Union and the EEC, but will proceed with some caution,” he said. With Europe boycotting the EURO, it does seem as though the country is left with only one “true mate” on the political map, and Russia has long been warming up its shoulder for us to cry on. “We’re not twisting anyone’s arm, Ukraine in particular, to enter the Customs Union or the EEC,” he said. “Ukraine just needs time to think, and if my predictions are correct, they’ll be coming to a decision soon.” Should Slutskiy be right, the European Union will indeed be a sweet, intangible dream; one in which our dear friends from the former Soviet Union will have no problem helping us forget. Almost as if the last 20 years of independence never existed...
Ukraine Signs Agreement with Germany for Gas
Ukraine announced on Monday that the state-owned oil and gas company, Naftogaz, has signed a framework agreement with Germany’s RWE, which lays out the legal grounds for the supply of gas to Ukraine from RWE. The plan is for Naftogaz to cooperate with RWE for the supply of gas purchased in Europe via Slovakian pipelines. According to reports in the press, Naftogaz will start importing 3 million cubic metres of gas per day via this route, which, according to Prime Minister Azarov, will be a lot cheaper than importing it directly from Russia under the current agreement (which he himself signed, it should be pointed out). Russia can’t be too happy with this agreement, and with the EU not too happy either, one has to wonder if the current administration is intent on alienating everyone, including the good people of Ukraine.

This Week in History Femen Against the EURO
These buxom beauties have no problem showing off more than just their morals whenever they’re on the scene, making them a conversation piece in Italy, Russia, Turkey and France this year. They may, however, have taken things a little too far this weekend. Gearing up for its exhibition on Maidan Nezalezhnosti, UEFA’s famous Henri Delaunay Trophy was attacked by Femen activist Yulia Kovpachuk on 12 May. Distracting the security guards on site with her bare chest, which read F**K EURO 2012, she threw the cup to the ground. Fortunately, the trophy got away with just a couple of scrapes and bruises. Not so, however, for Ms Kovpachuk, who was charged with hooliganism and fined with $100 and 15 days in detention. The Ukrainian protest group think the football championships will promote nothing more than sex tourism, and their hope is to stop “this Euro fan lowlife from making a bordello out of Ukraine”. What the girls don’t understand is that their actions promote exactly that which they claim to protest against, making Ukraine far less the innocent country they wish to portray.
Ukraine ‘Postpones’ 22 May 1879 Symon Petliura, Ukrainian politician, statesman and journalist, is born. Best known Yalta Summit Not that our illustrious president was left with much choice after fourteen EU countries pulled out due to the imprisonment of Yulia Tymoshenko. While we’re not one hundred percent sure this was a good move on the part of the EU (perhaps a face-to-face dress down might have been more effective), it certainly seems to have rattled some cages here. According to a report in the Slovak Spectator, these recent moves have thrust Slovakian President Ivan Gasporovic into the diplomatic limelight. Apparently, Yanukovych called Gasporovic and his Polish counterpart Bronislav Komorovski, pretty much asking them what they thought he should do next, mentioning, once again, a possible change to the Ukrainian criminal code that would allow for Tymoshenko’s release. It seems that Slovakia and Poland are now bridging the ever-widening rift between the EU and Ukraine, and as both countries are probably the biggest supporters of Ukraine’s EU aspirations, we can trust that they probably told Yanukovych to let the women go. Let’s hope so. And let’s hope he listens, before the rift becomes too wide.

The Days of Ukraine’s Lives
Ukrainian authoritative bodies never fail to surprise us. First, in reply to allegations of repressions in Ukraine made by Angela Merkel, they blame Germany for the occupation of Ukraine during the Second World War. Now, Genprokuratura is telling the European parliament that no one but Tymoshenko beat Tymoshenko. It’s little more than a defence attack, but demonstrates, yet again, that perhaps our higher ups should be writing for daytime television rather than running the country. Genprokuratura does confirm that Yulia Tymoshenko, leader of the opposition, does have some bruises, “perhaps from being hit”. Yet in their words, Tymoshenko’s accusation of a certain jail supervisor punching her is simply not correct. Which ‘logically’ leads them to believe that the only person left to blame is Tymoshenko herself. Soon they’ll be saying that it was Tymoshenko’s idea to be arrested, and that her pain is all due to visits by the devil. With so many stories, it can be hard to keep up. The one thing we do know is that you can trust almost no one in this government: they’re all after an Emmy for Best Fabrication.

for leading the Ukrainian protests during the Russian revolution in 1917, he is also known for promoting Ukrainian culture and is the founder of the People’s Artist of Ukraine award.
Crimean Tatars are deported to Uzbek SSR and other parts of the Soviet Union. The Soviet government blames the Crimean Tatars for their mass collaboration with the Nazis during the Nazi occupation of Crimea in 1941 – 1944, forcing them to leave their motherland.

Opposition Unites
The United Ukrainian opposition gathered this weekend at Mykhailivska Ploshcha to work out a plan of action for the near future. As each of its steps defines some sort of populist ideology, the draft plan is pretty phantasmal, and includes “getting out the crisis, providing a fair division of national wealth, getting Ukraine back on the European development course,” and more. Furthermore, Arseniy Yatsenuk asserts that the most important step is to remove Viktor Yanukovych from his presidential position and release Yulia Tymoshenko, Yuriy Lutsenko and other political prisoners from jail. Promising an almost paradise on earth, the opposition claim they will throw all mafiosi in jail while deputies will be stripped of their immunity. Now we really have heard it all. Let’s see if it shakes Ukrainians out of their Orange Revolution slumber and into 2012, where anything can happen.
The first serious accident occurs at Zasyadko Mine, in Donetsk, with 50 people killed. This particular excavation site is known for its large number of causalities, citing another 194 dead since this time and nearly 300 injured.

Playing Werder Bremen in the final, FC Shakhtar Donetsk wins the UEFA Cup, becoming the first Ukrainian team to do so since Ukraine’s independence. They are also the last UEFA Cup winner, as the competition is rebranded to the UEFA Europa League that same year.

As an annual event, the Day of Slavonic Literature and Culture is celebrated among all Slavic people. It is also known as Feast Day of Saints Cyril and Methodius, for their introduction of literacy and preaching of the gospels in the Slavonic language.

No Smoking Allowed
Emir Kusturica & The No Smoking Orchestra (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Gypsy techno-rock band), Palace Ukraine (V Vasylkivska 103)
21 May at 19.00
Nominated a couple of times for a Palme d’Or as well as an Oscar for Best Foreign Film, Emir Kusturica has proved to the world his talent as a director. But who’d have guessed that he’s also a talented musician? When he joined the band as bass player in 1986, the No Smoking Orchestra was popular in Yugoslavia only. Suddenly, however, concert agencies the world over started booking them. Was it all due to the genius of Emir Kosturica? You’ll have to get a ticket to find out! Tickets are 170 – 1,590hrv. A Battle
of the Beats The Euro is sinking like a stone, the European Union itself is wobbling like a drunk man sitting on a fence. Still, there’s one thing involving Europe that everyone loves… Eurovision!
C
ome the end of spring, the eyes of almost every citizen in the world will be glued to their TV screens as the Semi Finals and Grand Finals of Eurovision 2012 are shown. Being one of the longest-running television broadcasts in the world, Eurovision has become the most respected song contest in Europe. Since its inception in 1956, the audience has grown from 100 to 600 million people every year. Did you know that ABBA and Celine Dion’s success is due in no small part to their appearances on Eurovision in 1974 and 1988 respectively? In addition to these little known facts, what makes the show so interesting is that you cannot vote for the representative of your own country. The question is then – have you already decided which country you will support? Are you partisan irrespective of quality of pop? If not, you still have some time to make your mind up this year as the contest is scheduled for 22 – 26 May. We take a look at a few leading participants seeking your vote: who will be getting the big 12, and who the dreaded nil punkt…

Ukraine
This year, Ukraine will be represented by Gaitana, although her candidacy has provoked some unedifying ethnic disputes. Ukraine has been taking part in Eurovision since 2003, when Oleksandr Ponamarev debuted in the contest with his song Hasta la Vista taking 14th place. Next year, Ruslana went quite a bit better and won the contest with her Wild Dances, bringing Eurovision 2004 to Ukraine. Unfortunately, the next year’s representative, Gryndzholy, ruined Ruslana’s marvellous victory with their, quite frankly, abysmal offering sinking to 19th place. A revival of fortunes in 2007 and 2008 saw Verka Serdyuchka and Ani Lorak bringing home the silver. Now it’s Gaitana’s turn to do her best to emulate 2004. With her song Be My Guest, the singer seems to be inviting Europeans to come back to Ukraine next year, let’s hope that’s a winning formula!
Russia
Since 2003, Ukraine has been voting rather a lot for its closest neighbour Russia. This year, the country decided to impress the audience not with pretty boys like 2008 winner Dima Bilan or last year’s representative Oleskiy Vorobyov, nor with hot chicks like Anastasia Prykhodko or t.A.T.u, not even Russian pop kings and queens such as Alla Pugacheva and Philip Kirkorov. In 2012, Russia will be represented by Buranovskie Babushki (Buranovo Grandmas) – a folk band created 40 years ago and who became popular in 2008 for their cover versions of Russian rock songs, sung in the Udmurd dialect. The oldest member of the band is a sprightly 86. Unfortunately, she’s not going to Eurovision 2012, stepping (or perhaps shuffling) aside for younger members. The four competing grannies will hope to find your favour with their Party for Everybody.

Quasimodo has been coming to Ukraine for a number of years already, but this time, Garou will be coming as himself. World recognition came to the Canadian-born singer in 1998, after playing the popular hunchback in the musical Notre-Dame de Paris. While
many know him for this role only, Garou’s career is not limited to musicals. Having produced six studio albums, his first album remains one of the best-selling French albums of all time. Bringing these and other tracks with him on his Ukrainian journey, he’s promising everyone a ‘piece of his soul’. Tickets are 200 – 1,500hrv. For more information call 247−2444.
Vladimir Horowitz is believed one of the most celebrated pianists of our age. His performances were such that they could completely change the way people thought about music, and called the King of Kings among colleagues, he will be forever remembered as having something akin to supernatural piano powers. In dedication to Horowitz and his talent, pianists from all over the world will soon be here in Kyiv. Don’t miss out on this chance to honour him yourself. For tickets or more information call 278-1697.

Next up, popular Ukrainian photographer, Lesya Malskaya, has put together a few items that correspond with the themes the major Biennale exhibition has outlined. Full of emotional tension that often invokes the same in the viewer, come and take a look at how you can truly disconnect with reality and become one with art. For more information call 279-8383.
Subtle Ties
Exhibition of paintings by Renat Ramazanov, Oleksandr Syrbu, Rusalan and Mykyta Kolmykov (UA), J Greter Art Centre (V Hetmana 6)
1 June – 8 July
This Ukrainian artistic contingent is inviting everyone out to take a look at their variations on one of the most misunderstood themes of all, love. Love is what inspires the artistic soul and provokes some of the most daring ideas, regardless of its intangibility. ZAZ (France, chanson, jazz), Palace Ukraine (V Vasylkivska 103)
7 June at 19.00
Known to her parents as Isabelle Geoffroy, ZAZ released her debut self-titled album in 2010. Going platinum, twice, France-3 and Paris Match Magazine named her Singer of the Year. Constantly compared to Edith Piaf, the singer herself doesn’t see it. The one thing she does comment on and often, however, is her name, which covers all musical styles from Z to A and back again. She’s finally booked here in Kyiv: take in the show and this fabulous new voice from France. Tickets are 500 – 3,000hrv. For more information call 247−2444.

A Sarkozy Who Doesn’t Suck
An Evening of Jazz Improv
DJ Pierre Sarkozy (France, DJ), D’Lux (Hrushevskoho 3)
Pavlo Ignatiev (UA, jazz, instrumental), House of Actors (Yaroslaviv Val 7)
Okay, so his dad’s an unemployed little twerp. But let’s say this apple has a little more purchase in terms of falling-further-from-the-tree. DJ Pierre Sarkozy is, wait for it, handsome, talented and not even all that short! Sometimes going under DJ Mosey, he has been mixing up choons from an early age and is serious about his stuff, having gigged at top venues across Europe. In a refreshing case of anti-nepotism, his success is despite his cretinous father, rather than because. For ticket prices or more information call 200-9009.
Years of study, both in Ukraine and abroad, have made Pavlo Ignatiev a recognisable figure among the classical music and jazz communities. Giving concerts in Krakow, resounding success followed, and he brought his music back to the capital in 1998. Since that time, he has released eight studio albums, most of which focus on jazz and classical arrangements. This evening, Pavlo will be doing a bit of improv, taking popular jazz themes and developing them in his own unique way. Admission is 100hrv. For more information call 235-2081.

Ukraine History
73
Years of History
And Still Nothing Special
Okay, let’s admit from the start: neither Russia nor Ukraine know how to build a truly good car now, let alone in Soviet times. These countries can be proud of their aircrafts and space programmes, beautiful arts and music, but cars… they never really got out of first gear. So, let’s see what the results of almost a hundred years history are.
T
he history of Ukrainian car manufacturing evolved from the Soviet industry, post-independence. When the Soviet Car Industry died, most of the car factories were left to Russia, with one ‘illustrious’ exception – the Zaporizhya Automobile Factory (ZAZ). Although there have been no significant breakthroughs in the 73-year history of the Soviet Car industry, including both Ukrainian and Russian, there have been plenty of tries at creating a car that might be something to proud of. After all, England has Jaguar, Germany has Mercedes – surely it isn't too much to ask for countries of our size to come up with something?
Uncle Joe Says No
The story of Soviet mass car manufacturing started in the late 30s when Stalin noticed that there were not enough motors in his mighty empire. As there was no car industry in the state, engineers appropriated their ideas from somewhere. And so, taking the Ford T Model
18.indb 18
as a basis, the Soviets came up with their first ever “car of the people”. The first three KIM-10 cars were completed on 25 April 1940, and sent to Stalin right away. However, the cars arrived when Uncle Joe was in a bad mood and the verdict was: “Bad”. The director of the Kuznetsov KIM factory was even sent to prison for “misleading the Soviet nation”. Engineers went back to the drawing board and came up with an upgraded version, the KIM 10-50. Even though the KIM was designed for personal use, there were not more than 200 of them on the roads; this supposed car of the people wasn’t actually for sale to them. As an agenda of that time said, cars were awards for heroes – lessers could take the tram.
Intentions to Make Soviet Life Better
The civil car industry made a huge step forward after WWII. Fortunately for the industry, the war had given some much-needed new impetus and ingenuity. First of all, there were plenty of Mercedes, BMWs and Opels taken as trophies. Secondly, general Soviet engineering evolved in the 5-year search for better technologies. And so, borrowing some western ideas
and mixing them with a truly Soviet way of thinking, engineers introduced the Moskvich 400 – a clone of the German Opel Kadett but with KIM parts. Stalin was finally pleased. The Moskvich was introduced in 1947 and became the first car in the Soviet Union somewhat comfortable to drive. Later, in the early 50s, the car industry started supplying their products for the public. However, apparently aiming at the average citizen, the industry was still producing cars that could be hardy afforded by them. The cost varied from 9000-40000 roubles, while the average salary of a worker or engineer ranged from 500 to 1000 per month. Notwithstanding this, the Moskvich was a pretty successful car and its later model, the 407, was earmarked for export to the USA. American President Dwight David Eisenhower even asked Khrushchev to sell him one so that he could drive it when he retired. Unfortunately, after the US spy pilot Francis Powers was taken down over Soviet territories, the relationship between the two countries worsened, and the 407 didn’t end up making its overseas trip. This didn’t affect Moskvich manufacturing though, and later models, including the 412, 2140 and derivatives produced by the Izh Factory, spread over the country becoming a standard vehicle for the middle class of the 50s to 90s. Until, that is, the borders were opened and foreign imports flooded the country towards the end of the century.
Top Gear?
Along with the Moskvich, there were other cars on the market. At the same time the Moskvich

CIRO’S POMODORO Inspired by Oksana Mas’ Altar of the Nation, the Italian restaurant created its own art project on 8 May in dedication. Inviting starry guests out to try their hand egg decorating techniques, (Mas’ medium in her current display – premiered just three days later on Sophiiska Ploscha), who’d have guessed the celebrities would have been so enthusiastic..?

SOPHIIVSKA PLOSHCHA & TRIPTYCH GALLERY Unveiling Altar of the Nation, her newest project, on Sophiivska Ploshcha on 11 May, Oksana Mas delighted everyone in its tremendous 22 metres. Those select few lucky enough to receive invitations, headed along to the official opening the next day at Tryptych Gallery. Altar of the Nation shocked the 54th Venice Biennale and is here in Ukraine for the first time ever. Made of 200,000 wooden eggs, it’s a sight everyone should see, as are her paintings in the gallery, available until 25 May.

Victory Day in All its Glory
PARK OF ETERNAL GLORY, WWII MUSEUM, MAIDAN NEZALEZHNOSTI One of the most memorable events in Ukrainian history took place 67 years ago, with the surrender of the Nazis. Putting an end to the Second World War and the sorrow that accompanied it, Ukraine, along with the rest of the world, was finally at peace. While the Soviet Army and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army were often at odds, they put aside their differences on 9 May to celebrate the end of the massacre. It is a tradition that continues today.

Initialised by the National Tour Agency of Italy, ENIT, the project was targeted at showing the best sides of Italy and its relation to Ukraine. Over a period of four days, Kyivites experienced first hand the best examples of Italian culture, fashion and tourism.

OLMECA PLAGE The summer started early this year, and to celebrate the beautiful weather, the US Meat Export Federation invited guests out to a picnic on 12 May. Fans of American beef, and steaks in particular, came out to take part in master classes by some of Kyiv’s best chefs. Those who stuck around tucked into some grade-A barbequed beef.

I felt guilty enough about this in itself. But you can imagine how I felt one morning when she refused to teach me (too hungover, me not her), refused to take money, but insisted on leaving the hamper. If a Ukrainian doesn’t know you, if you’re not in their team, that’s one story. If you are, they don’t want your cash, they don’t consider theirs, and you are thrust into the warm bosom of friendship. This is a friendship where you need to be careful: one comment about liking something in their house, it’s yours; mention you’re feeling unwell, homemade borsch will be ringing at your doorbell before you can say ‘just a sniffle’. They are generally not strong patriots, but in any case, they want you to like Ukraine. The men will want you to have as many women as fancy takes you (and them), the women will smile indulgently and not be averse to this. When you are done with that though, they’d like you to find the right one and settle down in a loving union. They don’t mind you being here working, even if you’re earning more than them. They will accept that Ukraine is not a perfect country. But, of course, they don’t like you laughing at Ukraine. I do it, I’ll probably do it again, but not this week. This week I’d like to say that this is a good country with kind-hearted people who have often given me a lot more than I’ve given them in return.
As the EURO looms, accommodation talk starts to turn serious: many seek a place to rest their weary heads without liquidating their life savings in the process, while others look to offer them a deal. Dear Graham, Just read your column last week (after I’d read all the other, good, articles in What’s On). What a spiteful, bitter little piece that was. I’m a lady in my mid-30s who enjoys discos. I’ve never married, it just hasn’t worked out – I’ve built my career, had a couple of long-term romances. Of course, I’d like to meet my dream man, and I still hope that happens. In the meantime, after a hard working week, why on earth can’t I just go to a club and let my hair down? Perhaps you could relate to this, if you had any hair, or any compassion. What should I be doing instead by the way? Sitting at home, hair in curlers, face-pack on, answering online dating correspondence from international sleazebags? You know, maybe, just maybe, in one of these discos there is a man who appreciates intelligence, experience and a little more culture than an 18-year-old can offer. I just have to push the shallow, catty little bald guy out the way first. Yours, Svitlana Dear Svitlana, Ouch! I felt that! Graham
What’s Hot
I
have an English friend here in Kyiv who has an occasional (okay, fairly regular) habit of taking photos of various faults around town. We are talking potholes filled up with sticks and Fanta bottles, inappropriately attired locals, silly haircuts, misprinted signage, shoddy infrastructure. You get the picture. Well, the point is that this chap has many Ukrainian friends on his social portal of choice, they get the picture too and they don’t appreciate it. Several comments attest to this – ‘come to Ukraine, work here, live here and laugh at us, will you!’ I must admit, if I thought there were Ukrainians living in England poking fun in this way, I’d not be that happy. That’s the thing with Ukrainians though, they are many things but they are generally inclined to be pretty kind. Go to a Ukrainian’s house as a guest and try to leave without having a banquet laid out before you. This is exactly the situation I found myself in every week when going to pay the lady who does a little cleaning for me. I’d ring her bell, be dragged in for an impromptu buffet and end up consuming so much she actually ended up out of pocket by the conclusion of my gourmandising. I resorted, out of guilt, to ringing her doorbell, forcing money through her letterbox and legging it. Similarly, my Russian teacher took to arriving for each lesson with virtually a picnic hamper that she would deposit on the table pre-lesson.
Barbeques
The charcoal scent of barbeque fills the air from HydroPark to Obolon. So, get your coals out and your grill on. And, be a good citizen while you’re at it, clearing up behind yourself, eh!
Bridge Jumping
You see a young man standing on the side of a bridge, he looks like he’s going to jump. What to do? Watch on as jump he duly does, only to make a splash and emerge grinning several seconds later.
Boating
The boating season is in full swing. It must be said that Kyiv boating is pretty cool, in most places you’re restricted to man-made lakes and the like, here you can get some real river action.
Mosquitoes
Have you been to Mariinskiy Park by evening? Been made a tasty treat of by those flying fiends? And did you know, it’s only the females who bite? Hell hath no fury…

Take Me Out!
a Sushi
Two Men and This week, we head to the succinctly named Tuna to see what they can add to the sushi-saturated Kyiv market. Would it be a sushi score? Or one too many? Can a place situated in a business centre be conducive to evening dining? Can two straight men go for dinner together? Read on....
N
o one has penfriends anymore, do they? It’s Skype buddies. I remember when penfriends were penfriends; you got a list of names and addresses and sat down with your biro and paper. I was back at our old family house last year and found a cache of letters from the late 90s, reading through them was quite touching, it made me recall a line from The Smiths song, Cemetery Gates: ‘all those people, all those lives, where are they now’.
From Russia with Reservations
Anyway, I move with the times and now have a Skype buddy, Natasha, in Moscow. She’s a very nice girl, it’s good to practice Russian and I’m just happy to feel a tangible connection with Moscow. She reads my What’s On offerings online and recently made the remark that it seems like my restaurant reviews are always in the company of crumpet. That is, ladies. She

wondered, via use of smileys, if I am perhaps some kind of libertine. This is certainly not the case, and I resolved to show her that I am indeed a man of good character. So, for this latest assignment to Tuna restaurant, I selected my good (male) friend Pavel. He’s a man. We are a couple of men having an evening meal together – this is 2012, no biggie. Actually, I did dine one on one with another man last year, that being my mate Chris in Germany. That was a contractual requirement of the insurance claim, though, as we waited for the Rover 45 to be fixed. In any case, I’m happy to have some time with Pavel, as is so often the case in city life, we are chums but rarely see each other. It’s a nice evening so we take a table outside Tuna, which is set on the ground (first) floor of a large business centre/apartment-type complex, raised up from the street with a view over, well, a large business centre/ apartment-type complex. There’s an outdoor area and, to be honest, I quite like the view: it’s inner city, it’s a little Lowry. Pavel rocks up and we get to work. By which I mean, being two straight blokes having dinner together, there are a few formalities. Firstly we armwrestle. Then we tell lewd limericks, bawdy jokes and (nearly) true anecdotes involving farmers’ daughters. After this, we get serious about sushi. Now, bear in mind, as this place styles itself as a sushi bar, you’d probably think of it as mainly a lunchtime-type place. It does look, in truth, more conducive to passing through and picking up than dining out. There’s an actual
