What’s Up Opposition Cause a Riot

At least, that’s what a report on the UNIAN news agency website reported on Tuesday. Apparently, a 500-strong throng, headed by leaders of BYUTBatkivshchyna and OU-PSD parties, turned up on Maidan and attempted to break down fences surrounding the EURO 2012 fan zone. They were quickly intercepted by officers of the Berkut special police, who forced them out of the square and into adjacent streets. Now, we here at What’s On try not to be cynical, but we have to ask why the opposition forces would take part in such an action. They are the ones with almost all the international governments on their side, insisting jailed opposition members be released, so the question has to be asked: would they really partake in the destruction of property that could only be frowned upon by governments which currently support them? We don’t really think that would be too smart of them. Of course, they might not be very smart, but it’s also a possibility that it wasn’t them at all, and someone else entirely…

Hooligans Apprehended

It’s been over a month since the explosions in Dnipropetrovsk, but it looks as though the guilty parties have finally been caught, according to a statement made by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Vitaliy Zaharchenko, late last week. “We spoke to 554 witnesses and 153 experts,” he was quoted as saying, in order to make four arrests. Detained and awaiting trial, none of the foursome have ever had any sort of previous criminal record. What’s interesting, however, is their stupidity: demanding a payout of 4.5 million hryvnia to be put on credit cards prior to their arrest, threatening more blasts if payment was not made, they were tracked and caught via their purchases. Crime really doesn’t pay these days.

Restaurateurs Await the EURO

Kyiv restaurant-owners having been eagerly awaiting the EURO 2012 football championships. Why? So that they can do like Kyiv hotels and charge a fortune! Many claim that various cafes and eateries, especially in the centre, have already raised their prices anywhere from 30 – 50%, all the while pulling a Mr Burns “oscillating finger steeple”. While the football features prominently here in the capital, happy hours and cheap business lunches will also be a thing of the past. And, if that weren’t enough, some cheeky little eateries have even made new menus for English-only speakers, leaving their Ukrainian-language bill of fare untouched as far as price is concerned. Can anyone say fraud? It’s ‘shakhraystvo’ in Ukrainian for all the ‘dumb’ tourists.

Less than the Sum-Up of its Parts

It’s high time to sum up – is Ukraine ready to host the championship or not? Deputy Prime Minister Borys Kolesnikov has already made his speech, and the biggest problem we face, in his words, is our language preparation. “A country that speaks its language, one which isn’t adapted to the world community, and at the same time doesn’t know English, especially the young people, deprives itself of both economic and financial growth.” But that’s not all. Kolesnikov also complains about transport, saying, “We could have built up more roads. And we could have done it all cheaper and better.” But we didn’t. And whose fault would that be? Not our guy – Kolesnikov has a lot to say in his defence, comparing Ukraine with European countries, and even referencing the development of the European train system after WWII. In the end, his conclusions with regard to the country’s preparedness sounds more like an excuse than anything else, saying, “Moscow wasn’t built all at once, and our upgrade of modern transport can’t be done all at once either.” Omitting to mention that no one was actually asking for it ‘all at once’. We were just asking for a little better than what we got.

Olympic Official Resigns Over Ticket Scandal

This won’t surprise you at all, but the second in command at the Ukrainian National Olympic Committee has had to resign for trying to sell tickets to the games in London on the black market. Volodymyr Gerashchenko, General Secretary of the Committee, was caught out in a sting operation carried out by a BBC reporter posing as a potential buyer. Gerashchenko offered to sell the man 100 tickets from the official Ukrainian allocation of 2,900. Gerashchenko, 56, who has been in this post since 1997, was temporarily suspended on 22 May when news of the scandal broke, but fully resigned last Friday after an emergency meeting. We’re thinking they couldn’t brush this one under the carpet on the eve of EURO 2012. We’re also thinking he’ll probably be back in his post not long after the final.

Fortune-telling Pig Makes Maidan his Home

For all those disbelieving fans out there, the famous foreboding Kyiv Oblast pig and his predictions will be making the football zone on Maidan his home for the next few weeks, prophesising the results for each and every match at precisely 16.00. His method is very scientific: given two plates of food, with the flags of the two teams playing that day painted one on each plate, Porky will be extrapolating the results with his snout. Out in Kharkiv, one of the other four cities hosting the EURO here in Ukraine, they’ve unearthed a fortune-telling ferret! Kept out of the eye of the ever-present paparazzi, Rikki Tikki Tavi has yet to make an appearance, but is said will soon be delivered to the eastern city’s fan-zone in a limousine of all things! In either case, our beastly little prophets are a must see. And make sure you do make their acquaintance before the end of the competition, as Ukrainian fans are pledging to turn poor little Porky into bacon should his divinations turn sour for the country!

This Week in History Chernovetsky Out of Work

Kyiv’s most famous mayor, Leonid Chernovetsky, has officially resigned from his post, according to his website on 2 June, which contains a copy of his resignation letter signed by the man himself. While it was a sad day for our beloved Cosmos, lover of the (older) ladies, experts are saying that this is more than likely just some sort of PR stunt, meant to give him a little extra momentum come the parliamentary elections this fall. Whatever you want to call it, it does little to alter the situation here in the capital: Oleksandr Popov has been acting mayor of the city for more than a year already, and while put in power via the president, he’s doing not an entirely horrible job. Opting not take a pop at Popov, Chernovetsky simply thanked the Kyiv community for their support in 2006 and 2008, wishing the next mayor a great deal of success.

and its negative attitude to an autonomous Ukraine. Author of the Universal is Ukrainian writer Volodymyr Vynnytchenko. Three more Universals will follow, each of them contributing to the overall idea expressed in the first.

14 June 1891

Yevhen Konovalets, leader of the nationalist movement, is born. Konovalets becomes military commander of the UNR and leader of the Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists between 1929 and 1938. Moreover, he takes part in nationalist conferences and promotes Ukrainian nationalism abroad.

10 June 1917

The First Ukrainian Universal (a national movement leading the country from autonomy to full sovereignty) is signed up. It is in response to the Russian Provisional Government

Nestor Makhno, leader of the peasant Revolutionary Insurrectionary Army of Ukraine, is proclaimed an outlaw by the Soviet Army. Also known as the Black Anarchist Army, Makhno’s guerrilla campaigns during the Russian Civil War land him in jail a number of times. After a series of imprisonments and escapes, Makhno finally settles in Paris with his family.

10 June 1934

Ukraine’s governmental GULAG agency is established. The first GULAG was officially launched in Russia in 1930 as an instrument of political repression in the Soviet Union, and houses a wide range of convicts.

8 June 1995

President Leonid Kuchma and Speaker Oleksandr Moroz sign the Constitutional Agreement until a new Constitution can be drafted. Up until this time, Ukraine’s supreme law was the fundametal law of the Ukrainian SSR.

Fans’ Guide to Ukraine

Dear football fans! Welcome to Kyiv and Ukraine! No matter what you’ve heard in your local press, you’ve just turned up in a very fun and vibrant place. We are absolutely sure you’re going to have a great time in this country, and with good reason – the people here are warm and friendly, they love to party, and they’re always very interested in meeting and chatting to foreigners. However, there is a different culture here, some of it good, some of it no so much, so here’s a short guide on some of the negative aspects you might encounter while you’re here, and how to make the most of the positives. With our help, you can accentuate the positive while minimising the negative, and make the most of your stay.

The Drinking

The good news here is that Ukrainian beer is good and cheap. There are plenty of bars, pubs and clubs around town where you can enjoy a drink or two in the company of other fans and locals. The only possible problem to watch out for is that drinking on the street is illegal, but a whole host of beer tents have appeared on Khreshchatyk, so apparently that law will not apply, at least in this area. Our advice: be careful.

American Rapper Arrives Everlast (US, hip hop, rap, blues), Crystal Hall (Dniprovskiy Spusk 1)

12 June at 20.00

Most anything released from this New York-based musician is an expressive rollercoaster of socially-minded themes. Heading the House of Pain up until 1996, their eponymous debut album led the hardcore hip hopper to multi-platinum success. Then, in 2000, he won a Grammy for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group for the song Put Your Lights On, performed with Santana. While Erik Schrody (the boy’s real name) doesn’t get on too well with Eminem, he’s worked without problem, quite successfully even, with Ice-T, Limp Bizkit and Madonna. With six albums under his belt, he’s bringing tunes from all of them to Kyiv for the first time. Tickets are 400hrv. For more information call 538-0100. A High-Flying Bird

Noel Gallagher (former Oasis/UK, indie rock, pop), International Exhibition Centre (Brovarsky Pr 15)

13 June at 19.00

With his second album, High Flying Birds, Brit Noel Gallagher is coming to Ukraine. Just recently, the NME Awards (founded by the music magazine, New Musical Express) bestowed Noel with the noble title, Godlike Genius. Former member of the incredible Oasis, he and brother Liam revolutionised the world of music. But, nothing lasts forever, and in 2009, Noel left the band due to irreconcilable differences. Debuting at Number 1 on the UK Album charts, however, Noel, and his high-flying birds, seem to be doing okay. Tickets are 250 – 400hrv. For more information call 227-5055. : What's On Recommended

Lenny Kravitz (US, pop), Palace Sport (Sportyvna Pl 1)

23 September at 19.00

Girls all over the city can’t wait to see this pop rock idol in the capital with another hot concert. It’s been four years since the charismatic star played a gig here in Kyiv, gathering a massive crowd of Kravitz aficionados, and now he’s back with his most recent album, Black and White America. Whatever you love him for, do it here in Kyiv when he arrives later this month for the first time! Tony’s first single, released in 1961, which included backing by an earlier assortment of The Beatles, sold an incredible one million copies! It comprised songs Bonnie and The Saints, and is now one of the most expensive collectible 45 rpms in music history! The spirit of legends is in town for one night only – don’t miss it! Nochnie Snipery, or Night Snipers, first came into being in 1993. They strted out as a duo of Diana Arbenina and Svitlana Surganova, but quickly grew into a group of six talented musicians. The unfortunate departure of Surganova in 2002 only made the group that much tighter, ironically, which Diana and her crew are going to demonstrate this September. Presenting their newest album, the name of which they’ve kept a secret, this clandestine behaviour is a bit of a signature of theirs. Tickets are 150 – 1,500hrv. For more information call 279-1582.

With kites of all size, shape and colour, flying high in the sky, this event is going to brighten your summertime to no end. Chinese history tells loads of legendary stories about kites, as this was the first nation to create these flying apparatus for both work and leisure. Come along this weekend and learn the stories yourself, take part in a master class or two, and then it’s your turn to fly! So, grab some string and get your kite in the air, because you never know, yours could be the one that wins best of the summer! For tickets and more information visit www.premiera.at.ua.

A really hard act (to follow) is coming to Kyiv this autumn. Udo Dirkschneider, former vocalist of German Accept, has started a solo project, called, you guessed it, U.D.O. Bringing Norwegian black metalists Keep of Kalessin, and Swiss thrashers Coroner, the three groups are hoping to propel their fans into nothing short of musical insanity. Having been around for quite some time, they’ve earned the status of ‘world hardcore metal’. Take them in, if you dare! Tickets are 300hrv. For more information call 222-8040.

Like a Fairytale

Vienna Johann Strauss Orchestra (Austria, classical), Palace Ukraine (V Vasylkivska 103)

19 December at 19.00

Formed in 1966, this outstanding orchestra had Eduard Leopold Strauss, nephew of Johann Strauss III, as its first conductor, and playing Strauss’ musical legacy throughout all these years, it has maintained the composer’s excellence well into the 21st century. The programme to be presented this evening is called Just Like In a Fairytale. Undoubtedly, this theme, alongside the musical genius of Strauss, will convert Kyiv into a fairytale too! Tickets are 80 – 1,200hrv. For more information call 247-2316.

What’s On the Street

Knowing Us, Knowing Sweden Ukraine’s first opponents are Sweden, here in Kyiv on Monday June 11. Let’s see how the Swedes stack up against the home country, and what you think of them...

Some Stats

It’s mixed scores in the rankings tables. On one hand, Sweden comes out 4th in the Worldwide Corruption Perceptions ranking of countries table, with a score of 9.3/10. Ukraine limps in at 152nd, 2 places above the Republic of Congo, on 2.3. On the other, as those who have been to Sweden can attest, it’s a very pricey place. This expensiveness sent Sweden spinning down from 7th in the UN Human Development Indice, to 30th, back in 2010. This same report labelled Sweden ‘the most expensive country in the world’. Sweden is also not shy about taxing its citizens, with a top individual tax rate of 57%, compared to Ukraine’s 15%. Sweden has a far smaller population than Ukraine, around 9.5 million compared to Ukraine’s 45 million plus, but not actually that much less land, 450,000 square kilometres next to Ukraine’s just over 600,000. That means there are 77 Ukrainians per square kilometre, next to Sweden’s 20. Are they happier though? Well, Swedes live a lot longer, compare a staggering 81.4 years to Ukraine’s 69.2. Swedes also have a GDP of near $56,000 per person, next to Ukraine’s just over $3,600. So, you’d expect the Swedes to be fairly content with their lot, right? Well, you’d be wrong, as Sweden tops global tables for divorces – a jaw-dropping 54.9% of Swedish marriages end in divorce, making Ukraine’s 40% positively utopian. On beautiful girls, it’s honours even – a recent Traveller’s Digest survey put Sweden as the number 1 country

21.indb 21

for beautiful women, but Kyiv as the city with the most beautiful women (with Stockholm trailing at number 2).

Yesteryear

Nowadays, Sweden is known as calm country of Volvo-driving, Ikea-assembling, ecofriendly sauna lovers. Actually, some think of that as being a bit of a problem, there is a common Swedish word ‘lagom’, which translates as ‘acceptable / sufficient’. And it’s been said that a reason for the high divorce rate, is that if a Swede doesn’t like something, they walk away rather than fight for it. It wasn’t always this way though, back in the day, Sweden was a major European power – at its peak in 1658, Sweden was the third largest country in Europe by land area, only surpassed by Russia and Spain. However, a series of military reversals and famine saw Sweden miss the chance it had to defeat Russia, and it gradually began losing its territory, chiefly to Russia. So, want to strike some common ground with a Swede? Talk of those rapacious Russkies may overcome the ‘lagom’ and stir up some passion!

To Football

Sweden made their World Cup debut in 1934, and have since made 11 World Cup appearances, this will be their fifth at a EURO. They’ve never been world-beaters, but did finish second in the 1958 World Cup and third in 1950 and 1994, also reaching the semi-finals at EURO 1992. Their squad is certainly widely-spread, playing as they do in 13 different countries across the world. This contrasts with the Ukrainian team, who are all Ukraine-based, with the exception of 2. Ukraine also find themselves down at 50th in the world in FIFA rankings, with Sweden at 17. Ukraine’s finest achievement in international football is reaching the last 8 at the 2006 World Cup, further than Sweden in that tournament. Head-to-head, the record is played 4, 2 draws, 1 win apiece.

What Do You Know?

We went out on the streets, found three Kyivites and asked them for their Swedish sentiments: Tatyana Manilich, 22 What are your associations of Sweden: I know quite a lot about Sweden, having visited there 5 years ago – Stockholm is the capital, and it’s a very cultural place with around 100 museums. Sweden is clean, friendly, a bit expensive. Do you know any Swedish? ‘pratar du engelska?’ (do you speak English?) Who will win, Sweden or Ukraine? Sweden Dmitriy Kan, 36 What are your associations of Sweden: Very nice country – ABBA, Volvo, tall people, mountains, blue eyes! Do you know any Swedish? No Who will win, Sweden or Ukraine? Ukraine! oleksiy Krot, 23 What are your associations of Sweden: Snow, forests, Ace of Base, Ikea, Zlatan Ibrahimović, people are a bit reserved. Do you know any Swedish? No. Who will win, Sweden or Ukraine? Ukraine

Kickin’ the Ball a Bit

Whatever it takes to get the ball

SPARTAK STADIUM Llantrisant is a small town in the Welsh mining valleys near Cardiff, has a rugby club known as The Black Army (Llantrisant RFC – Rugby Football Club), and on 27 May, they brought their 1st and 2nd team players to play against our local club Eger RFC. The game was a hard fought affair with the Welshmen struggling a bit with the heat and a lot with the searing pace of some of the Ukrainian backs, and in the end, Eger ran out comfortable winners. Before the match, Llantrisant’s first team coach and a professional rugby player from Cardiff Blues traveling with the group conducted a coaching clinic for a group of young Ukrainian rugby players who have recently taken up the sport. Thereby giving the boys an opportunity to widen their experience of the game with input from a different culture.

The junior regatta jockeying at the start

KYIV SEA With winds blowing at over 25 knots on 24 – 27 May, most yachtsmen stay in port, but not the hardy sailors of this years’ WindMaster Regatta. However, defying the wind god does have its price, as masts came tumbling down and gear failed in the testing conditions. Regatta favourite R&B sailed by Sperbank Rossiya chairman Ihor Yushko, who lost a $30,000 carbon fibre mast on the second leg of the first race, and right in front of TV cameras too, making this the most famous dismasting in Ukrainian yachting history. Their loss earned them the Cutty Sark Sportsmanship Award as they worked all night to fit their spare and be back on the water the following day. Twenty yachts sailed in the senior regatta whilst some 50 children’s boats made up the junior fleet, in what was a truly exhausting event.

KYIV FINE ART Popular Ukrainian artist Yuriy Solomko presented a rather humorous art project, Titans, to the city of Kyiv on 29 May. For Solomko, Titans represent those who try to put themselves ahead of the rest, portraying a terribly selfish, yet comical, portrait in the process. His geopolitical caricatures attracted the attention of many political and nonpolitical figures alike, most especially for the humour hidden therein. Check it out yourself until 30 June.

it’s been completed and, after all, EURO 2012 should kick-start future custom for the country – meaning future visitors for a fitted-out and fully-functioning Sport Hotel. Another ‘cause for concern’ was the construction next to Teatralna Metro. We even published a photo in What’s On a couple of weeks ago (snapped by muggins), of an awful-lot-still-todo-in-not-that-much-time scene, featuring a worker taking a little break on his equipment. Well, not only did that guy get up and get cracking, he was joined by a horde of helpers as, when I passed there the other day, there wasn’t so much as a scaffold in sight. That’s right, the façade of the Museum of Kyiv History has been finished, replete with eaves, colonnades, awning and even a revamped pavement out front. You know, for us out-of-towners who live here, poking fun at Ukraine is a bit of a hollow victory. After all, it begs the question, if the country is so risible, why do you live there? I’m pleased that Ukraine looks like it’s going to pull it off. There’ll be time after for all the snagging. “And for a hundred visions and revisions. Before the taking of a toast and tea.” That last bit was TS Eliot, but I’m feeling all poetic, inspired by events. So bring on EURO 2012. Come on England! And well done Ukraine.

Hello Graham, I read your That Said column about Ukrainian Hospitality last week. And, sorry, I cannot let it pass like that. You made this wall, Graham. This time it is closer to us, this new Wall of Iron. And you can cross this wall, but most of us Ukrainians cannot. We cannot fly over it and see the heaven that you are from. We cannot go and see this paradise of yours, and maybe laugh at you in return, and be equal. Whatever we do, we open our home to greet you, bring you homemade borsch when you’re feeling unwell, pay you more than we earn, learn Ukrainian, while you learn Russian, whatever we do, Graham, you will continue to laugh at us. We broke our Iron Wall, Graham. Now it is your turn to break yours. Cheers, Ruta Chervona

What’s Hot

I

must say, that Ukraine has impressed me of late. I remember being in Greece in January 2004, the year they held the Olympics, and having a feeling things wouldn’t be ready. And, so it came to pass, Greece pulled off a shoddy, under-prepared and poorly executed Olympics. As I walked past unfinished buildings and dug-up roads a few weeks ago here in Kyiv, the same feeling was present. And yet, something miraculous has happened in recent weeks. Things have started to be finished. Okay, not ‘finished’ finished as they were for Germany’s fantastic World Cup 2006, say. But, they look like they’re finished. Take the Sport Hotel next to the Olympic Stadium as a case in point. I passed it a few weeks ago and witnessed an empty husk of a building – a shell, seeming barely worked on by anyone much at all. Having consigned it to the status of simply another EURO 2012 embarrassment for Ukraine, I paid little attention to it in the weeks after. only to turn round and take it in the other day to find the exterior completely clad out with fancy looking plate glass. Now, this hotel isn’t actually going to be ‘open for business’ per se. And some would say, that’s a pretty major failing, given that it’s right next to the stadium. However, let’s look on the positive side, there are lots of hotels in Kyiv and one more here or there isn’t the end of the world. It’s not going to be an embarrassment even; it’s going to look good. Others may choose to look into that as a metaphor, about the Ukrainian emphasis on the importance of appearance over substance. I won’t do that, it’s impressive

Ukraine

You’ve worked hard for it, and now, it’s here. Enjoy these next three weeks of football and fun – it’s going to be awesome.

Sport Hotel Now

Okay, not open for business as such, but still, looks pretty cool! Just tell fans it’s fully booked, no one will notice.

Pronunciation

Whatever you’re calling the upcoming tournament – The ‘Yuroz’, the ‘Evros’ or even the ‘Oroz’ – it’s all good!

Street Kiosks

They’re all disappearing! Of course, I’m sure their owners were served with full notice, well in advance. Possibly.

Sport Hotel Two Months Ago

Looking at that, who really thought it would be anything other than a colossal embarrassment come June!

The Price of Stuff

Creeping up a bit, isn’t it?

Thanks Ruta, The ability of Ukrainians to travel more easily is certainly something to be aimed for. Just to be clear by the way, I had no part in the building of any wall, I’ve never built a wall in my life. In fact I remember being insulted at school by a fellow pupil, who accused my parents’ house of having a ‘crumbly garden wall’. Just like you though Ruta, he had a good point. My parents had the wall demolished the next year, and paved that particular part of paradise to make parking for two cars. Best, Graham
