What’s Up

Case of British Businessman’s Suspicious Death to be Reopened as Murder

P

olice have reopened an inquiry into the death of a British businessman in Kyiv in February 2008 following pressure from his family who are deeply concerned over his internet bride's claims to his estate. Barry Pring, 47, was dragged 30 metres along a deserted dual carriageway by a car having just celebrated his first anniversary with Anna Zuizina, 29, an ex-stripper whom he met on the internet. At the time, police called it a hit-and-run, and the case was closed last year when no new evidence had come to light. But his family, who believes he was executed by a contract killer, has kept the pressure on, and finally, after British Foreign Secretary William Hague got involved, Ukrainian police have reopened the investigation and have said it is very close to becoming a murder inquiry. Barry Pring met Anna Zuizina on a website, and immediately fell in love with her after the two met when he visited Kyiv. Not long after meeting, Barry found out that Anna was not a teacher as she claimed, but a stripper. Concerned for her safety, Barry rented an apartment for her and gave her an allowance so she could leave the seedy profession. Despite concerns that all she was interested in was a visa and shoes, the couple got married in early 2007, but Anna refused to relocate to the UK, and only visited three times for brief periods during their first year of marriage. Barry came to visit Anna in Kyiv in February 2008 to celebrate both their wedding anniversary and Valentine’s Day. The couple spent the evening in the Kozachok restaurant on the Kyiv-Chop highway, and after spending a few hours there together, the coupe left to flag down a taxi. Workers in the restaurant say they offered to call the couple a taxi, but Anna refused.

23.indb 4

They went to the side of the road together, and then Anna suddenly realised she’d forgotten her gloves and returned to the restaurant, leaving Barry standing on the hard shoulder alone. Moments later a car travelling at 130km/h (80mph) with its lights off smashed into Barry and dragged him 30 metres down the road causing horrendous injuries that proved instantly fatal. Witnesses claim that Barry was unsteady on his feet, but tests on his body showed that he did not have excessive amounts of alcohol in his blood leading his family to believe he may have been drugged. Knowing that many Russian internet dating sites are controlled by organised crime syndicates, Barry’s family became convinced he had been the victim of a contract killing. A week after Barry’s death, Anna and her mother Olga turned up in London seeking to go through papers. She gained entry to his apartment and sold his Land Rover. She had been given legal aid in Britain in order that she pursue his estate. Mr Pring’s family are strongly opposed to the move as they say the marriage was a complete sham. But Anna’s father, a retired Soviet air force pilot is convinced his daughter is innocent of any wrongdoing. “Police clearly confirmed this was a tragic accident. Anna spent hours at the police station where she was interrogated. Barry’s death hit all of us, not just Anna, all of us.” Anna’s mother Olga also offered assurance to the press. “Anna did not know he was a wealthy man until after he died. His death was a tragedy for Anna, and for all of us. It was Anna’s lawyer who told her there might be some inheritance. She did not know before that.” It seems, however, that the case will be reopened, and that this time round it will be a murder inquiry. We can only hope justice will be done, and that this case will serve as a warning to all those hoping to find love on the internet.

Exchange Students to the US Still at Risk The US State Department acknowledges that one of its most popular exchange programmes leaves foreign students vulnerable to exploitation, and it’s thought that new regulations will do little to stop abuses, according to an Associated Press report. Currently, thousands of students travel to the States on the J-1 Summer Work Travel Programme, and many of them arrive only to find out the jobs they were promised do not exist and then find themselves sharing beds in crowded apartments, charged so much for rent they’re left with no money for themselves. In one of the worst cases so far uncovered, two girls from Ukraine were forced to work

as strippers at a club in Detroit, with one of the girls claiming she was raped. The revised rules aim to shift more responsibility onto the 53 entities the department designates official sponsors of the programme, but even under the proposed changes there will be no direct oversight of the scheme by department employees. Federal auditors have criticised the department for years for depending on sponsors, some of whom make millions of dollars from the scheme, but avoid responsibility for the students by farming out their duties to third party contractors. Many experts fear the new regulations will have little impact on the abuses, and therefore we strongly advise any Ukrainian students thinking about travelling to the US on this scheme to check and double check all aspects of their proposed visit before leaving the country.

Jurassic Aqua Park for Kyiv Kyiv’s very first aqua park is set to open 1 July in Obolon, and its creators claim it will be one of the biggest covered aqua parks in Europe with an area of 25,000 square metres. The concept behind the park will be pre-historic with dinosaurs and flora and fauna from the Jurassic period, which we reckon the owners must have selected as a way to cash in on the famous movie. In the park there will be 14 waterslides, two pools with wave generators and three with flows, a lagoon with an aqua-bar, Jacuzzis and saunas, a kids' zone and even a sunbathing terrace on the roof. For those with an extreme nature there’s going to be rafting, vertical drop waterslides, a volcano the water from which will wash thrill seekers down its sides at crazy speeds, and the park's biggest attraction is set to be a waterslide that begins 40 metres up on the park’s roof. The park will be capable of hosting 4,000 guests simultaneously, and the owners promise the prices will be reasonable as they want this to be a place for all the family. It opens soon, so check it out.

Azarov Says No Rise in Gas Prices Any Time Soon

Battle of the Flags Miffed at a recent judgement from the Constitutional Court which forbids the hanging of the Soviet flag alongside the Ukrainian one at official celebrations such as Victory Day, those crazy people in the Communist Party of Ukraine want to stage a referendum on whether the country’s national symbols should be changed. “Not only will we persist in insisting the red flag be mentioned in the Consitution, we will also hold a referendum asking the people whether they approve of changing the national symbols back to those they were before the nationalists got hold of them,” said Oleksandr Holub, a deputy of the Communist Party of Ukraine. His suggestion is that the national flag of Ukraine should be dark red like the Cossack flag of the Zaporizha Sich, while the coat of arms should be an Orthodox Cross. Which at least means he’s not asking for a Hammer and Sickle. At more or less the same time, the Verkhova Rada rejected a new law proposed by the NUNS party which obliged the Ukrainian national (yellow-blue) flag to be hung outside every state institution. It would appear the country’s politicians are focusing a lot of time on flags right now, and see this as a very important issue for this economically prosperous and socially developed country.

23.indb 5

And good for him! At a meeting last Friday evening with Vice President of the World Bank Philippe Le Houerou and World Bank Regional Director for Moldova, Belarus and Ukraine Martin Raiser, Azarov said that Ukraine would not evade the international increase in prices on oil and food, but any increase in domestic gas prices is not in question so far. As we all know, the IMF had set as one of its conditions for the $16.4 billion bailout to Ukraine an end to the subsidisation of the cost of gas to households. And while the IMF said that this should coincide with a safety net for the poorest in the country, they seemed to overlook the fact that paying market prices for the commodity would be a burden most households in the country would find very difficult to deal with. Azarov seems to agree, arguing that he and his government are managing to keep inflation within permitted boundaries despite the global increase in food and oil prices, and that should be enough for the IMF. He will not consider raising domestic gas prices at this moment in time. As we said, good for him!

Ukraine Abroad

After much delay and posturing, British boxer David Haye will finally fight the world heavyweight champion Volodymyr Klichko on 2 July. It brings Ukraine and Britain together in the biggest sporting contest between the two nations ever staged. Ukraine’s sporting icon wants to record his 50th win in Hamburg, whereas Haye wants to claim the scalp of a boxing king. It’s been billed as the biggest match in years, with 150 countries tuning in. The tense exchanges between the two fighters have added fuel to the fire. Adrenalin pumping, What’s On previews the fight.

A

Haye / Klitschko match has been on the cards for years. It had originally been scheduled for 2009, but Haye had to pull out through injury. Ever since then, the two parties have been wrangling over contract terms, such as who gets star billing. But now the contract has finally been signed and a date set. The fight’s on.

Different Men, Different Styles Cocky Brit versus classy Ukrainian is how the boxing world sees the bout on 2 July. In terms of ability, they’re fairly even. The Brit is WBA title holder and the Ukrainian is IBF and WBO

23.indb 6

champion. Victory for either man would unify the belts, but a Haye win would catapult him into boxing stardom, alongside the Klichko brothers. Haye is not the favourite to win, but he is capable, confident, and is widely predicted to be Klichko’s toughest competitor yet. However, many sporting analysts still have their money on Volodymyr. Together with a difference in styles (Klichko’s methodical jabs are famous), there’s also a difference in age and experience between the two fighters. At the age of 30, and aiming to retire before he turns 31, Haye now has 25 wins, compared to Klichko’s 49 wins by knockout. The 35-year-old Ukrainian, standing at 6ft 7in, has been champion for five

years now, and takes it all in his stride. He seems unfazed by the taunts of the challenger, and has not (publicly) risen to the bait. Part of the fun of a fight is watching the two come together before a match, for press conferences and promotional events. The bravado and body language is well-known, with the cameras loving the intense eye-to-eye stare. He who blinks first, etc. Listening to the ridiculous things fighters say about each other is also good entertainment. Delusions of grandeur abound. They talk about themselves as if they were made from granite, and belittle their opponent. If boxers were more intelligent, their verbal jousting could even be called psychological.

Jabbering While Jabbin

Brawn not Brains Unfortunately most have been hit in the head one too many times, and the things they come up with seldom have any memorable effect. Occasionally fighters show a flair for the prematch win. Mohammed Ali was brilliant at it; almost everyone remembers him saying he “floats like a butterfly, stings like a bee”. It was simple imagery, but it worked. Similarly, Ali managed to get under the skin of his opponents, notably Joe Frasier, whom he called “a gorilla”. It was a crass and idiotic insult, but it aggravated Frasier, and still does to this day. Haye and Klichko are not quite in the same league as The Champ, but Haye has played the

23.indb 7

part of cocky upstart perfectly. His more sensible analysis of Klichko is that the Ukrainian has a weak chin and he postulated as to the surgical requirements for strengthening it. He claimed also that Klichko picked fights with boxers who were either injured or just returning from injury, and that this time the Ukrainian would be fighting a boxer “in his prime”. So far, so dull. Haye then went on to call Klichko a “fraud” and a “robot” adding that he was “manufactured and boring”. He expanded on the robot analogy, saying that his “circuits would be blown” on fight night. Whilst it wasn’t quite Ali, it was better. He also honed in on the manufactured argument too, telling us how Klichko had “killed the

“STICKS AND STONES MAY BREAK MY BONES BUT WORDS WILL NEVER HURT ME.” ABSOLUTELY. IT’S THE GLOVED FISTS THAT WILL HURT heavyweight division” by being “an Eastern European fighter with no personality and no fun”. No need to get racial, David. Haye then decided to focus inwards, likening himself to a “dog that can’t be controlled”. That may have sounded good when he was drafting it, but he perhaps didn’t realise that Ukrainians know a thing or two about wild dogs, so again – unlikely to bother the robot. Haye then promised to knock the big man out before the 12 rounds were up, and just for good measure, he childishly refused to shake Klichko’s hand at both of the two press conferences in May. Klichko has conducted himself very differently, and has been measured and respectful. So much so in fact, that he may as well have appeared in a dressing gown and slippers, smoking a pipe and reading the paper. You get the impression he wouldn’t have said anything at all, given the choice – merely beckoning the Brit over with his hand, menacing smile on his face. But given that the press and sponsors wanted something to get excited about, he managed to tell Haye that he “lacked respect” and promised to give the youngster “a lesson”. Less is more, according to this line of thought. Or perhaps Haye’s right about the lack of personality. Either way, it’s the fight we’re all waiting to see, and as the saying goes: “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.” No, it’s the gloved fists that will hurt you, and these two both possess sufficient fire-power to deliver a crunching knockout. Will the weak chin of the Ukrainian be exposed? Will the Brit discover the Rambo movies only ended as they did because they were scripted to? We wait with baited breath for the cocky challenger (‘cock’ for short) to take on the Ukrainian giant. Britain versus Ukraine: may the best nation win.

This Week Theatre and Classical Music Perform your Ideas Performativity Art Project, Les Kurbas Centre (Volodymyrska 23b), Kupidon café-club (Pushkinska 1-3/5), National Art Museum (Hrushevskoho 6)

27 June – 10 July Performance art has become an absolutely essential art form in contemporary expression for the last century, and certainly into the next. Exploring temporality itself, and the way ideas are transformed through action, performance artists invite the viewers to become active participants so that they too experience the present art-action. Due to the country’s isolation from the progress of the rest of the world over many years, performance art in Ukraine is still in its infancy. That hasn’t kept them from picking up the concept quickly, however, and it is gaining momentum at a fast pace. TanzLaboratorium, the project’s author, has prepared a large and various programme of different lectures, performances and discussions, so check out the schedule so as not to miss anything interesting! A Welcomed Roach Papa Roach (US, nu-metal), Alta Expo Centre (Moskovskiy 11a)

29 June at 20.00 Calling themselves “a band that tries to walk that line between metal, hardcore, punk rock and pop music”, the pride of Vacaville, California is bringing its Raid the Nation tour to Kyiv and, if the chatter on the group’s website is anything to go by, Kyivites will be turning out in droves. And why not? Papa Roach exploded onto the music scene in 1999 with the major-label debut album Infest, going on to endless touring and two more albums, Love Hate Tragedy and Dancing in the Ashes, which attained gold and platinum status, respectively. One of the things Kyiv is great for is coming up with new and interesting ways of doing things, and this year, with the number of open-air attractions exponentially growing in size, that seems to be the case more than ever! This next shin-dig will have you following the crowd – if only to find the place – at which point you’re on your own to have a good time. Although, that shouldn’t be too hard considering it’s all free bar with ticket in hand. So then, where will you find everyone? Check out the ‘Veseli Hirky’ attraction out by the Trukhaniv Bridge about 20.30. From there, DJs Kryist, Fever Tunes, Sallex, VAD, Foxy and Nastya Muz will keep you moving for the rest of the night. Tickets are 350hrv on the day or 250hrv if you call and reserve. For more information call 093745-1477.

Yuriy Bashmet, without any exaggeration, is the best violist the world has seen for some time, his name being synonymous with the highest level of instrumental performance. Spending his early years and taking his first lessons in Lviv, he has been awarded with some highly prestigious honours such as an Award – the musical equivalent to the Oscars (1993), a Sonnings Musikfond (1995), a Grammy (2008), as well as a number of state medals from Italy, France, Russia, Ukraine and many other countries in his arsenal. Rock Legend Graces Kyiv Robert Plant and the Band of Joy, Palace Ukraine (V Vasylkivska 103)

Jazz Fusion Mike Stern Band (USA, jazz fusion), October Palace (Instytutska 1)

13 July at 20.00 Jazz is beginning to gain a well deserved reputation in Kyiv, especially with this next entry into Ukraine’s musical archives. Famous jazzman Mike Stern (Blood Sweat & Tears) returns to Kyiv not solo but with violinist Didier Lockwood, bassist Tom Kennedy and drummer Dave Weckl. Together they are ready to impress Ukrainian audiences with their fusion of jazz, jive and blues all mystically combined to ensure a fabulous night of music for all. Tickets are 150 – 500hrv. For more information call 279-1582.

31 July at 19.00 Legend, ground-breaking and influential are but three of the adjectives that have been applied to Robert Plant. And with good reason. From not entirely humble beginnings, Plant and Led Zep reeled off a stunning string of blues-infused hard rock hit albums, spawning chart-topping hits like Communication Breakdown, Heartbreaker, Rock ‘N’ Roll, Kashmir and, of course, Stairway to Heaven. Following Zep’s breakup, undeterred and with a considerable amount still to offer, Plant soldiered on, notably releasing a platinum (and 5 Grammywinning) album entitled Raising Sand, in collaboration with American singer Alison Kraus. On tour with his new band, Plant will be arriving in Kyiv as one of the most beloved rock singers of all time. This concert will be, if there is any justice in the world, sold out and tickets will move fast, so you may want to Ramble On down to your box office as soon as tickets go on sale. Tickets are 300 – 3000hrv. For more information call 247-2316.

Open-air Serenades Serenades by Mozart and Richard Strauss, Master Klass Culture Centre (Lavrska 16)

1 July at 20.00 In the course of their Classics on Fridays classical music cycle, the Master Klass Culture Centre is presenting a rather outstanding event: an evening of wind serenades. The concert will be taken up to the rooftop where it is promised that romance will fill the air not only because of the beautiful sounds but also because of the scenery. One of the pieces to be performed is the Serenade for Winds, Op 7 which not only is a true masterpiece of music but was written when Strauss was only 16! Block everything out on your calendar now and make sure not to miss this charming evening. Tickets are 30hrv. For more information call 594-1062.

Removing the Shine Unknown Pushkin (Russian play in 2 acts), October Palace (Instytutska 1)

27 & 28 July at 19.00 This summer, Kyiv theatre lovers will have the opportunity to take in a number of plays starring Russian actors who are taking their shows on the road. This next performance, however, Unknown Pushkin, is something really special as the famous poet is being played by none other than the eminent Sergey Bezrukov. The play depicts Pushkin as an ordinary man stuck in between his creative work as a poet and a courtier whose relations with the tsar could alter his life dramatically. The plot embraces a good chunk of the poet’s actual biography, including the duel which cost Pushkin his life. All in all the play definitely shows an unknown Pushkin without the gloss and perfection often seen in many of the textbooks. Tickets are 400 – 2250 hrv. For more information call 279-1582.
