Ukraine’s Bare Bones

Happy Hippo Birthday! On 28 June, the Kyiv Zoo held a very special birthday party for two of its oldest residents. Firstly, there’s Bresta the Hippopotamus who turned 53 years-old making her the second oldest hippo in the world, and next up is the 43 year-old white Rhino called Tryvoha, who’s well past the average age for these big animals. To mark this double occasion, the whole day at the zoo was one big birthday bash with all the animals receiving special party food, and all visitors getting treated to special events and excursions. The fact that any of the animals have lived to so long at Kyiv Zoo is cause for celebration, as according to the PETA animal rights organisation, it is one of the worst five in the world. In addition, the animals at the zoo have been snuffing it in some very unusual and unexpected ways over the last year or so, leading some to speculate that some greedy oligarchs are looking to close the place and grab the very valuable real estate upon which the zoo resides. So a very happy birthday to Bresta and Tryvoha: keep looking over your shoulders!

Azarov Appears to Miss the Hypocrisy

Shevchenko Stands Tall in Ottawa

In what has to be one of the biggest pot and kettle situations in history, Azarov once again is saying that the current gas deal with Russia is unfair (that’s the one he negotiated, extending Russia’s lease on Sevastopil for another 25 years), while Tymoshenko goes on trial for much the same thing. Russia’s natural gas price for Ukraine currently equates to $295.6 per 1,000 cubic metres and it is expected to rise to $350 in the third quarter and to $400 in the fourth quarter of this year. Azarov is not satisfied, and insists the deal needs to be revised. “We would like our [Russian] partners to understand, and we insist on this during our talks on the contract, that a contract that does not suit one of the sides and does not suit categorically will not last for long,” he said in an interview with 1+1 channel. Currently, Ukraine receives a 30 percent discount on gas from Russia, compared to the prices EU member states pay, but that, apparently, is not enough. So, Mr Azarov, how much is the deal you did costing the country? And when will you stand trial for it?

A monument to Ukraine’s greatest bard, Taras Shevchenko (who was also a talented artist), was unveiled in the Canadian capital at the weekend to mark the 120th anniversary of the arrival of the first Ukrainian settlers in that North American country, and also to celebrate 20 years of Ukrainian independence. Created by the well-known Ukrainian-Canadian sculpture Leo Mol, the statue of the great man is one of the tallest in the city standing 3 stories high. Including the image of the artist as a young man and the texts of three of his most famous works, the monument stands on the grounds of the Ukrainian National St. John the Baptist church on the banks of the Rideau Canal. Commentators have noted the surrounding scenery is reminiscent of Kaniv, the town on the Dnipro where Shevchenko was laid to rest. Those who funded the monument to Shevchenko hope this is only the first step in the creation of a park in Ottawa that will bring together Canadian and Ukrainian cultures.

There are those that doubt the all-knowing and wise Ukrainian babushka. However, with this latest discovery of 32,000 year old bones found in the Buran-Kaya cave-site of the Crimean mountains, perhaps Doubting Thomases needn’t doubt the age-old intelligence that exists in this part of the country at all. It seems Archaeologist Dr Oleksandr Yanevich from the National Ukrainian Academy of Science in Kyiv discovered the four Buran-Kaya caves in the Crimean Mountains in 1991, and since then, roughly two hundred human bone fragments have been unearthed at the site. Shards of human bones and teeth have been found, as have ornaments made of ivory and animal remains, which researchers were able to directly date using radio-carbon techniques. These artefacts tie the ancient people to a cultural tradition known as Gravettian which came to span the entire continent of Europe during the Stone Age, and demonstrates once again that there is much more to Ukraine than meets the eye.

Open-air Serenades Serenades by Mozart and Richard Strauss, Master Klass Culture Centre (Lavrska 16)

1&8 July at 20.00 In the course of their Classics on Fridays classical music cycle, the Master Klass Culture Centre is presenting a rather outstanding event: an evening of wind serenades. The concert will be taken up to the rooftop where it is promised that romance will fill the air not only because of the beautiful sounds but also because of the scenery. One of the pieces to be performed is the Serenade for Winds, Op 7 which not only is a true masterpiece of music but was written by Strauss when he was only 16! It’s actually a great evening to get geared up for the week ahead, as 8 July will include a night of Bach in three periods, illustrating the emancipation of the harpsichord from its purely accompanying role. Block everything out on your calendar for these next two Fridays and make sure not to miss these charming evenings. Tickets are 30hrv. For more information call 594-1062.

Oleksandr Pavlov is a true master in expressive non-figurative art whose 30-year career has included shows in Ukraine, Russia, Germany, France, India and England among others. In his latest series of works, the artist has taken the words of Edgar Degas, “Is it possible to lament a world where horses and women exist!” and created an entire retrospective including these beautiful and mysterious creatures. Turning to symbolism and a mixture of subtle colours, this exhibition also shows the philosophical mind of a great artist who also happens to be the author of several books. Coming Soon Jamala and The Maneken Arena (Baseina 2a)

22 July at 20.00 With summer season in full swing, Arena has got their summer stage set up and are presenting some top performers both national and international. Jamala, a lady who needs no introduction but we’ll give her one anyway, has been making music since her childhood in Crimea. Her voice resounds in

the heads of any who have ever heard her and will no doubt be found among the Guinness Book of World Records for largest range someday soon. The Maneken, on the other hand, is a DJing genius. Mixing electronic with grace and ease, the body and mind can’t help but react to his electro funk groves. Boasting a great duo of Ukrainian music-makers, they will be making waves tonight!!! Tickets are 200hrv. For more information call 093-947-7476.

Standing Their Ground Enter Shikari (UK, post-core, trance-core), Bingo Club (Pr Peremohy 112)

7 September at 20.00 These guys have been rocking together since 2003, making a transient mark on the British music scene. That mark, however, may become a little more permanent

in coming years, especially with their newest album, Destabilise, out last fall. Opening for big names such as Prodigy and 30 Seconds to Mars at various concert halls recently, theirs is a mixture of heavy metal and melodic trance, post-core and electro. Get into Bingo to check out these Hindi hunters tonight. Tickets are 250 – 450hrv. For more information call 424-2555.

On the Hunt Night Snipers (Russia, pop-rock), Arena Entertainment (Baseina 2a)

15 July at 20.30 One of the things that has been an iconic symbol about this band for years is the relationship between the former acoustic guitar/violin duo Diana Arbenina and Svetlana Surganova. While Sveta left the band in 2002, Diana ploughed on winning a Triumph for her achievements in literature and the arts. It’s been awhile since she’s been to Kyiv. Having made her fans wait an indelibly long time, however, this next show is sure to please. Especially since Arbenina has been working on a few new hits. Admission is 250hrv. For more information call 492-0000.

The King of Crocodile Rock Elton John (UK, pop), Palace Sport (Sportyvna Pl 1)

8 November at 19.00 Elton has a special relationship with Ukraine, not only where music is concerned but also with regards to a very special little boy he had at one time wanted to adopt. Denied because of his age, many thought that we would never see the likes of his purple coat tails round these parts again. While sorry might just be the hardest word, no one here is sorry he’ll be here this November, where all of his best songs will be part of the show. Tickets not yet on sale. For more information call 246-7406.

The Area of Art Art-Pole Festival, Unizh Village, Ivano-Frankivsk Region

Sweet Dreams

12 – 16 July

Dream Theater (metal, hard-rock), Palace Sport (Sportyvna Pl. 1)

The Art-Pole festival, formerly named Sheshory, is one of the biggest and most popular ethnic music festivals in Ukraine. Having changed location to the village of Unizh, it remains a well-organised and memorable attraction, drawing locals and tourists alike to the picturesque Dniester canyon. The festival unites music with landscape as well as performance art – each of which encompasses a multitude of facets – so get ready for a little experimentation. Add to the mix bands such as DahkaBrakha (Ukraine), Perkalaba (Ukraine), Village Kollektiv (Poland), Feloche (France), Wild Marmalade (Australia) and you’re bound to have a very unforgettable few days. For more information visit www.artpolefest.org

Pioneering American progressive metal band Dream Theater are finally bringing their outstanding stage performance to Kyiv. Renowned among musicians of many genres for their technical virtuosity, this band, formed at the famous Berklee College of Music in the United States, has won accolades the world over for pushing back the boundaries of “metal” and blurring the lines between genres. Kyiv-based fans of Dream Theater are guaranteed a unique show, since the band never plays the same set list twice and their gigs are known to take audiences on a long, loud, fast, yet melodic journey to the frontiers of modern rock music. Tickets are 250 – 650hrv. For more information call 246-7406

Opera Summer Premiere

An Invasion of Voices Kuban Cossack Choir, Palace Ukraine (V Vasylkivska 103)

Iolanta – Russian opera in 1 act, National Opera Theatre of Ukraine (Volodymyrska 50)

16 – 17 November at 19.00 As well as being one of the most ancient, the Kuban Cossack Choir has to be one of the most prominent of Russian choirs to date. Its roots go back to the beginning of the 19th century where their artistic mastery even then was unparalleled. Receiving numerous invitations to perform the world over, the choir’s repertoire is surely something to behold as it includes moving historic ballads, common Eastern European folk songs, hymns that speak of the tragic civil war on Kazan territory as well as anthems that promote the rich and unique folk culture that was the Cossack army. Tickets are 80 – 650hrv. For more information call 247-2316.

A Meeting of Musical Minds Global Gathering, Chaika Airfield (Petropavlovska-Borshchahivka, 2km from Kyiv on Zhytomyr highway)

9 July at 14.00 Global Gathering is an annual dance music festival by Angel Music Group, the company behind Godskitchen, and is a key player in the international festival market. With its first event in the UK in 2001, it continued to expand throughout the world until it reached Ukraine in 2008. This year there is a huge line-up of top electronic musicians and DJs starting with the tremendous DJ Tiesto, dance doctor Richie Hawtin, terrific trancer Markus Schulz, house guru Laidback Luke, the fabulous Ferry Corsten and tonnes more! Independent Exhibition of works by Ukrainian artists, Mystetsky Arsenal (Lavrska 12-14)

From 12 August This year, Ukraine is celebrating its 20th anniversary of independence – an important date for an ancient country, but young state. Mystetsky Arsenal, Ukraine’s biggest art space, is presenting a huge project to show the entire sweep of Ukrainian contemporary art over the past 20 years of self-government. The organisers claim that the exhibition will include the best samples of art works in all genres, visualising Ukraine’s spiritual and creative fields since 1991. Don’t miss this event and your chance to see how the country has and continues to gain confidence step-by-step. For more information call 2885225.

Oops… She Did it Again Britney Spears (USA, pop), Palace Sport (Sportyvna Pl 1)

Closing this year’s theatre season, the National Opera Theatre of Ukraine presents the premiere of the opera Iolanta by Tchaikovsky. Inspired by the Danish play King Rene’s Daughter by Henry Hertz, the opera was written quickly and was first debuted at the Mariinsky Theatre in St.Petersburg in 1892. Since then, it has been successfully staged in Russia and abroad, most notably thanks to music critics who often note the lyrical beauty and charm of the heroine. Born blind without realising it, both Iolanta and the story may be a bit naïve. However, it ends well proving love can work miracles. Tickets are 20 – 200hrv. For more information call 279-1169.

The Boy is Back Fatboy Slim (UK, electronic dance), Odesa Seaport (Primorskaya 6, Odesa)

8 July at 20.00 Born to parents in Reigate, England, as Quentin Leo Cook, the pseudonym Fatboy Slim came along in 1996 when his second solo album contained the Top 40 UK hit, Everybody Needs a 303. Two years after that was when he really started to soar, however,

A Virtuoso on the Electric Guitar Enver Izmaylov (Uzbekistan/ Crimea), House of Architects (Hrinchenka 7)

8 July at 19.00 Enver Izmaylov is an outstanding musician, and using guitar strings as a keyboard to create fantastic new sounds, his unique technique called “tapping” is what makes him so special. Combining rock with a little jazz and then a few nuances of folk as well, most specifically those of his Crimean Tatar roots, anyone who has ever been to one of his shows knows that he is a big fan of improvisation. Moving from one crazy rhythm to the next, this is a must see for anyone into music of any kind. Tickets are 200hrv. For more information call 234-7008.

and his very first solo number one, Praise You, was released to praise from everybody. Moving on to a top hit that had an even funkier video, Weapon of Choice catapulted Cook to stardom, and now regardless of how fat or slim he is, this DJ ain’t comin’ down anytime soon. Here in Kyiv last year, you’ll have to head to Odesa this year if you want to check him out! Tickets are 300 – 800hrv. For more information call 384-4444.

27 September at 19.00 Britney Spears was an absolute icon for youth in 2000 when her debut album ...Baby One More Time hit music store shelves; and let’s be honest the shelves over in Petrivka couldn’t keep up either. While she had taken a break from music due to, shall we say, erratic behaviour, she’s now up to her seventh studio album (if you can believe it) called Femme Fatale. Ranked number six on Forbes Most Powerful and Influential celebrities in the world in 2010, you might want to get your butts in the seats for this one: drama seems to follow Britney wherever she goes and this concert is no exception. Tickets are 590 – 9990hrv. For more information call 246-7406.

Take Me Out!

If it’s Summer –

Then it’s Crim I don’t know of anyone who doesn’t dream of heading to Crimea in the summer: the hot sun, the cool sea, the picturesque rock formations, the surrounding beaches. It’s got everything that is all too desirable when you’re stuck in a hot city. While What’s On has no time to take off down south (we do work round the clock to provide you with the most recent and interesting information each week, after all) what we do have time for is a little Crimea right here in Kyiv.

I

have been told about Krym by a few of my friends who know a bit about quality food at reasonable prices, and claiming this among their favourites to satisfy wild hunger, I have to admit I’m interested. So finding myself on Khreshchatyk with a friend one hot sweaty busy afternoon, we come across the Krym sign right on the corner of Maidan Nezalezhnosti and Shevchenko Provulok and walk in.

A Clever Bill of Fare Right away I can see that the interior is rather ordinary, and come the weekend, the rich and glamorous will most certainly be found some place else (which for some might be a good thing). However, amid its simplicity and informality, it is cool, and for that I am grateful. Draperies hang from the ceiling separating each eating space and adding intimacy, while small table lamps sit

on every table replacing pompous chandeliers. As well, each table has their own call button allowing for what I can only guess will be quick service. This particular chain of restaurants serves Crimean Tatar cuisine, which is a fine assortment of Tatar tradition and the local Crimean climate. Add to that the spicy flair of Turkish, Greek and Ukrainian cookery and I have to say I am eager to try a few morsels of this multinational gastronomy. With the menu already on the table, we open it up to find not only a numerous array of dishes but a picture beside each option. For newcomers to the country or just the restaurant, this a great introduction to items they might not otherwise be familiar with. Add to that suggestions of other dishes that might go well with the one you are interested beneath each option, and I’m thinking they’re pretty clever. I can hardly pronounce the names properly, and when I attempt to they don’t really mean anything to me so for lunch this afternoon I am not only going to rely on my intuition but help from our waiter. Standing close by, I wave him

Back to His Roots MYSTETSKIY ARSENAL On 21 June, Mystetskiy Arsenal held another impressive exhibition opening showcasing 200 or so works by famous Ukrainian artist Vasyl Ermilov. Gathering people from all over Ukraine back in the early 1900’s, Ermilov used their faces, personalities and characteristics for pieces that were highly innovative at the time. His approach destroyed the artistic stereotypes critics had not only then but now, allowing individualism to surface. Open until 17 July, Vasyl Ermilov’s roots are on display for all to see.

RANCHO EL GAUCHO 9 June saw a mass gathering of Argentinean nationals at the El Gaucho restaurant. The event? Two hundred and one years of independence for the republic. In contrast to other independence days, this was an unusual celebration that included a ceremony where Ukrainian VIPs were awarded for their contributions in helping promote this South American culture. Awards included various nominations such as Voice of Ukraine, Carnival-Man, Cheerfulness of the Country, as well as accolades in the spheres of football, dancing and cooking. The evening continued much in the same way it started, with heartfelt smiles, where everyone had a wonderful time.
