What’s Up

J

ust like the space race from half a century ago, Ukraine is fast catching up to global competitors in farming, and may soon be overtaking the world’s various Flo Jos on the agricultural track.

As of 14 July, 2011, Ukraine has already harvested 9.7 million tonnes of grains and leguminous plants out of approximately 30% of national farming areas, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food reports, 6.4 million tonnes of which is grain alone. It’s an interesting stat considering that for a period of about a month, the rains sent everyone running indoors, constantly complaining about the weather.

While we may have survived, there were many Ukrainian crops that weren’t so lucky. According to Yevhen Lenh, the director of large agriculture company, Ukrzernoprom Argo, winter yields will have losses anywhere from 15-20%.

The sun has returned, however, and regardless of the previous wet conditions, experts are saying this year is looking especially good. They are even giving numbers that range from 42-44.8 million tonnes of harvested wheat, maize, barley and so on, but only if warm weather continues to cooperate. Lenh specifically has said the country “will harvest about 43-44 million tonnes this year, which is better than last year’s figure”; a mere 39.3 million tonnes. The Ministry is, however, even more positive about final numbers saying it could be as high as 45 million tonnes.

This comes at an especially crucial time for Ukraine who is not only looking for integration into western markets, but who now seems to be competing head to head with the west in terms of agricultural output. Prairie farmers in Canada in particular can’t seem to get a break from the torrential rains, hail storms and wind that continue to uproot or completely wipe out their crops, predicting 2011 as the worst wheat harvest in Western Canada ever.

Wheat export was drastically reduced in both Ukraine and Russia last year due to drought. But as of 1 July, restrictions have been removed

and both countries are enjoying bumper crops, pouring grain back into world markets at discounted prices in efforts to regain lost customers.

There is speculation that the competition could get even tougher now that spring crops have come off.

As far as export goes, APK-Inform analyst, Anastasia Ivasenko, believes there could be as much as 18.4 million tonnes, a 5% increase, headed out of the country this year, the majority of which would be wheat and maize.

However, one of the things that may negatively affect profits from this gift from the gods is the prices farmers are getting for their grain exports.

According to Agrarian Union of Ukraine Chairman, Hennadiy Novikov, “The state should immediately cancel grain export duties and resume VAT refunding to grain exporters,” stating the production costs are dangerously close to that of the present price for grain.

The price at the moment is due to aforementioned market trends. What the price doesn’t fairly represent at the moment, however, is the entrance of second class wheat on the market, often seen coming from our evenhanded neighbours to the north.

While Ukrainian farmers are getting the heavy put on them with regards to export prices, there is the worry that they may be associated with Russia in terms of quality as well. As an example, Egypt, one of the world’s biggest wheat importers, has stated it is considering adding Ukraine and Romania to its list of approved suppliers. Nomani Nomani, vice chairman of the state-run General Authority for Supply Commodities, will be making a trip to Russia this week to see for herself just what they are getting themselves into. “The objective of the meeting is to emphasise the specifications of the wheat sought and ensure that the quality is good.”

It’s a great step forward, especially from last year when the worst drought in over a half a century forced both Ukraine and Russia to halt grain exports from going anywhere. But it’s another reminder that the world, from every angle, is watching.

The gimmick is that only 918 918s will be made, and while production hasn’t even begun yet, they're almost all sold. If you keep your eyes on the road in the next few months, however, you may catch sight of one of these hybrids racing down our own streets as an unidentified Ukrainian millionaire has recently been added to the waiting list. Winner Imports, the official representative of Porsche in Ukraine, said the buyer is an old friend, with a couple of similarly branded cars already in his possession. Recently presented at an auto show in Geneva, this latest model, with a price tag of 650,000 euro, is Porsche’s most expensive to date. And while that may seem like a stack of cash, it is mere monopoly money to many here in Ukraine, because according to the State Tax Service, there are over 6,600 millionaires in the country; a number which grew by 1,792 last year alone.

Ukraine’s Last Wizard Murdered Mykhailo Nechay, a famous Ukrainian white magic healer from the Ivano-Frankivsk region, was killed recently. Taking people into his home to heal and/or look into their futures, the 82-year old wizard had truly unique abilities. His gift betrayed him on 15 July, however, as he was stabbed to death by some religions nut accusing Nechay of paganism and slandering the church. The suspect was caught the same day in a forest six kilometres from the village in which the wizard lived.

Ever since he was a little boy, Mykhailo Nechay said he possessed such powers.

Claiming the ability to cease the flow of human blood, for example, surgeons would often send for him, requesting his assistance for various operations. As he got older, regardless of having only received a high school education, he would often lecture in topics such as psychology, sexology and philosophy in various national universities.

He often said he received his supernatural abilities from God and traced his skills back to an ancient ancestor, Danylo Nechay; a man skilled in occult science and magic.

Living a very humble life he has helped countless people, and is the last ever known Ukrainian “molfar” – a supernatural magician with profound knowledge in nature, the healing quality of herbs and an alleged ability to see into the future.

One Head is Good, Two is Better ‘Two heads are always better than one’ our teachers always used to say. But we would like to propose that perhaps that is not always the case. At least, not for the two-headed snake on exhibit in the Yalta Zoo. The three-year old, two-foot-long albino California Kingsnake has two heads: both of which eat, breath, sleep and think for themselves. It is a rarely seen phenomenon, occurring every 50 years or so.

However, this viable two-headed species seems to be making great waves at the zoo, which has doubled in visitors since the dragon-like snake went on display earlier this July.

Like Siamese Twins, it is incredible to watch the creature(s), each head wanting to determine for itself the direction it will take or the food it will eat; sometimes fighting over a particular piece. For this very reason, zoo keepers keep a close eye on these two, as the California Kingsnake often hunts for reptiles in nature and the possibility that the one might attack the other is quite high!

As Europe’s only two-headed specimen at the moment, the last such like snake was exhibited in Switzerland 20 years ago. This one is on loan from Germany at the moment, and will remain with us until September.

J Lo To Sing in Ukraine Yep! You got it right – Jennifer Lopez in Ukraine! You’re probably wondering why we here at What’s On fell off the ball and didn’t announce the concert. The truth of the matter is her visit to Ukraine is to sing, but not for the public. Rumour has it that the recently separated soon to be 42-year old hot Latino mama was requisitioned to sing for half an hour at a wedding somewhere in the country this week.

And who's? The daughter of Serhiy Taruta, Ukraine's second biggest oligarch. And how much does it cost to have the stunning J-Lo sing at your daughter's wedding which will take place in an exclusive resort in Crimea?

A cool one million dollars. Having just announced her divorce from top-selling salsa crooner, Marc Anthony, we think it’s great that J Lo has pulled herself together enough, made her way over the great blue divide and is taking in some hard-earned cash. This should add nicely to her net worth of $150 million.

Kyiv Debates

T

he international team at What’s On is concerned by the social situation in Kyiv which, on one hand, is considered to be a hospitable and tolerant city, but on the other hand, people from ethnic minorities get set upon from time to time. As is happening in other parts of the world during these times of financial difficulty, extreme right wing movements are gaining in popularity here in Ukraine, and the nation's very own extreme nationalists, Svododa Party, are doing particularly well. As NATO recently issued a report which called the party anti-western, antiliberal, anti-EU, anti-Russian and anti-Semitic, we thought it was time to call in one of its representatives and have him debate his case. Andriy Illenko, head of the Kyiv Branch of the party agreed eagerly, and Canadian Blair Sheridan was pitted against him defending the ideas of tolerance and multiculturalism.

Blair Sheridan: Oleh Tyahnybok and the Svoboda Party have an unsavoury reputation, at least among foreigners living in Ukraine.

Svoboda is considered to be an extreme right, racist organisation, with a hatred of foreigners and a desire to remove them from Ukraine. I’d like to hear what kind of nationalism (inclusive or exclusive) forms the basis of your party’s ideology.

Andriy Illenko: There are plenty of types of nationalism. We at Svoboda are Ukrainian nationalists, who have inherited the whole tradition of Ukrainian nationalism. We do not consider ourselves either a right-wing or a left-wing party; these notions are blurred and have different meanings. We are socially oriented nationalists, opposing the oligarchic clans that have seized the whole country.

BS: How do you understand the concept of “the nation?” How do you define the Ukrainian nation?

AI: We understand the nation as an ethnic and spiritual community, where both these elements – ethnicity and political\cultural identification – are equally important. A nation without an ethnic element is the model of multicultural Europe, a model from which Europe is stepping back. A nation without a political aim is a kind of tribal community.

Therefore, a strong nation is made up of these two elements. The Ukrainian ethnos has existed on this land for ages, and that is why we say Ukrainians are the titular nation of this state; it is only due to the Ukrainian ethnos that the name of the country and the country itself exists. However, the Ukrainian nation began to form when Bohdan Khmelnytsky united the people for the war of national liberation in 1648. Compared to other European nations, Ukraine is quite a young nation, since we’ve been struggling for independence for the past 300 years.

Nationalism is a topic of continual debates in today’s globalised world, and no less when it comes to Ukraine, a country with a troubled historical and ethno-cultural past.

BS: Your slogan “Ukraine for Ukrainians” sounds quite racist, assuming you base an individual’s belonging to the Ukrainian nation solely on bloodlines.

AI: To me, a racist is one who thinks the colour of the skin or the ethnicity of an individual defines objectively the characteristics of that person. In this case, we are not racists, because we do not think a person is good or bad due to his origin. We are anti-imperialists, considering any attempts of one nation to oppress or humiliate another nation or ethnic group to be evil. I don’t see racism as a problem for Ukraine, as it appeared as a phenomenon in colonial empires, in order to justify the white domination over indigenous peoples.

Ukraine has never been a colonial empire; on the contrary, it was enslaved for many years, so we have different problems. In Europe, however,

there’s the problem of “auto-racism”, with Europe today having become a shelter for illegal immigrants. With the help of auto-racists at the top of the European political system, the idea of tolerance is promoted. This tolerance, however, does prevail among the ethnic minorities themselves; they do not tolerate homosexuality, feminism, etc. As a result we have aggressive, mobilised Muslims or other ethnic minorities and tolerant, nationally indifferent Europeans. Recently, leading European politicians like Merkel, Sarkozy and Cameron have admitted the policy of multiculturalism in Europe has failed!

BS: While you’re certainly correct regarding the recent statements of the leaders of Germany, France and the U.K., you should also remember that they do not represent Europe as a whole

AI: By our slogan “Ukraine for Ukrainians” we mean Ukraine should be a country for the people, not for a dozen oligarch families who have divided all the resources and funds of the entire nation among themselves. This does not mean we are against foreigners, no. We follow the scheme once proposed by Stepan Bandera, leader of the Ukrainian nationalists. He said there could be three possible policies towards foreigners: if they are our allies – we’ll treat them well; if they are indifferent – we’ll treat them the same way; if they are our enemies – we’ll fight with them and will not tolerate them. If a person is not an ethnic Ukrainian, but is a loyal citizen of Ukraine, speaks the Ukrainian language and does not break the law, we’ll only welcome him.

As long as a person is not an Ukrainophobe (like Tabachnyk), he’ll be welcome in Ukraine.

But we are not going to tolerate those who hate Ukraine. I’m very radical when it comes to Ukraine-haters, who insult Ukrainians. I think they should be held criminally responsible or simply be kicked out of the country. I’m radical when Ukrainians are deprived their rights of assembly and freedom of speech. I’m radical when the Ukrainian language and culture are despised. But this does not mean I disrespect a person just because he is not an ethnic Ukrainian.

Let’s be honest: we do not have any problems with any of the ethnic minorities living in Ukraine. We only have problems with Ukrainophobes!

On the other hand Ukrainians are far too tolerant! Go to any Kyiv night club and see how foreigners treat our girls, and then try to go to a night club in Libya, for instance, and act the same way with their local girls – you’ll be smashed to pieces!

nor, given their electoral support, even their own electorates in their entirety. There is still plenty of space for tolerance and support for multiculturalism in Europe, at every level of society.

Furthermore, let’s face it: when economic times are hard, the natural (and regrettable) impulse of any political leader – in power or not – is to appeal to an ineffable sense of “us” versus “them”, the latter being a broadly defined, sinister force.

It’s a necessary, but not sufficient part of events, from the Armenian genocide to Holodomor, from the Holocaust to Srebrenica and Rwanda.

AI: The proof of the failure of multiculturalism is that, according to polls, Marie LePen, the leader of the National Front in France, is in first place in presidential election polling. Look at Finland: the nationalist party took third place there. Look at Hungary, where the nationalists’ party won.

Svoboda growing popularity, now at 6-7%, is in line with the overall European tendency.

BS: Pre-election polling is hardly an exact science. In fact, I remember how Marie LePen’s father was, more than once, tipped to upset the political apple cart in France. Yet, he never did.

Nor am I surprised that France has consistently, since the end of the Second World War, rejected the ultra-nationalist line. France, after all, is the home of “Liberté, Egalité, and Fraternité” and, perhaps, the greatest example of the triumph of civic, inclusive nationalism, where a single political nation was forged from Breton and Norman, Occitan and Basque, etc. Therefore, your examples are deeply flawed and far too simplistic. “Ukraine for Ukrainians” inherently infers that all other nationalities will not be tolerated.

BS: A couple of crucial points have to be clarified here: how does one define what makes a person indifferent to Ukraine or, worse, an enemy of Ukraine? Would a person have to actively work against the commonly accepted interests of the Ukrainian state in order to be considered an enemy, or would telling a joke in which the object of fun was a Ukrainian be enough? I realise it’s all a matter of degree, but I’d like to know how you define love versus hatred for Ukraine. Such simple definitions have no credence, and without your clarification of the slogan (which most people do not have access to) it quite clearly offers people easy access to a xenophobic platform. What Ukrainians tolerate, on the other hand, is no one’s fault but that of Ukrainians.

And how exactly does a foreigner’s treatment of a Ukrainian girl in a nightclub differ from that of a Ukrainian's? This is a meaningless example that obviously infers foreigners are impolite, which in turn fuels xenophobia yet again.

So to stick to something relevant, Svoboda has written in its party platform that it would bring in proportional representation of Ukrainians in

Theatre Moves to the Streets The Sounds of Summer Summer Sound Festival, Griboffka, Odesa region

15 July – 28 August In support of EURO 2012, the Summer Sound Festival is the newest addition to the warm weather party scene, and held over 31 days, it’s got a pretty decent line-up for all beachbums. American band the Scissor Sisters are expected to headline while Chrystal Method and House of Pain are scheduled to appear; as are Brits Morcheeba, Nazareth, Paradise Lost, Uriah Heep and ex-Prodigy boys Leeroy Thornhill & Kieron Pepper; Germany’s De Phazz; along with Russian Tesla Boy and Punk TV. Every week is going to be dedicated to one of four styles – hip hop, disco, rock and lounge – while clubs will host a whole array of various other music styles. This has most certainly put a bee in the bonnet of another month-long festival down round those parts. But with so much going on, it can only be a good thing.

Festival of Street Theatres Open Air Fest, Kurortne village, Crimea

22 – 28 July With all academic theatres having finished for the season, out come bands of amateur street theatres ready to demonstrate their mastery and artistic skills.

Using mostly mime, gesticulation and body language to express themselves, their medium is different to that of classic theatre. That’s not to say it does not have merit. In fact, street theatre goes back to the Greeks and the Romans in the Middle Ages when actors took to the street to entertain European crowds. In Ukraine, this fascinatingly fun genre of art is in the process of a revival – be a part of it this summer!

A weekend offered the perfect opportunity to traverse a historical route called the Golden Horseshoe of Cherkasy. It led them to the very roots of Ukrainian statehood and independence.

Visiting Mother Nature

he Bear and I had been planning our trip to the Cherkasy region for a long time, as it is known as both a unique and beautiful place. Come the day, we grab some sandwiches and a guide-book and set off in the early morning of Saturday, heading south. We’re both curious and charmed by the Cherkasy region, namely because the three most important liberation struggles took place here; one in the 17th century (led by Bohdan Khmelnytsky), another in the 18th century (the campaign was named Koliivshchyna), and the most recent one in the 20th century, which took place in the wild Kholodny Yar (cold ravine).

Given what’s going on in this country right now, we set off thinking that this trip had come at an opportune moment, and it seems like just the right time to get inspired with the spirit of freedom this area holds. And as if to prove the point, we find ourselves taking the new Obukhiv high-

Half way there, we stop for a picnic on the shores of the Dnipro River. The view spread in front of us is of green hills and silky platinum sand beaches.

We refresh ourselves in the river and finish our lunch. Just as we can feel ourselves getting relaxed and peaceful, we hear the road calling us, and begrudgingly we set off again.

Our journey is pleasant and full of surprises. We come across one such point of interest when we pull over to the side of the road for a call of nature. Heading over to some thick bushes, we discover bird-cherry trees on both sides. As we come closer, we meet a local family picking the fruit into huge buckets. “They’re rather small,” says the woman holding a bucket, as her husband rumbles around up the tree, throwing the cherries down to her. “But for preserves, they’re just perfect! There’s a long alley of bird-cherry trees along this road, so we come here every year.” We follow suit, and in the spirit of adventure we help ourselves to these small but bitterly sweet fruits.

Our first destination on the way is the town of Chyhyryn. As we near it we come across a huge statue depicting a strong, iron-muscled Cossack, sabre up and ready to fight. This statue looks almost magic-like, as the background behind him flickers with the golden-yellow of wheat fields and the dazzling blue sky above. It’s a perfect depiction of the kind of scenery that gave birth to the colours of the Ukrainian flag. Inspired by this inviting sign, we soon enter Chyhyryn at about midday.

Our hotel has the same name as the town and appears to be the only place here to host tourists. Situated right in the centre, in handy reach of all sight-seeing spots, it looks comfortable and friendly. We’ve reserved the room in advance – a two-room ‘luxury’ apartment costing us 320hrv per night. Apart from a spacious bedroom with lovely double bed, the living room welcomes us with a soft couch and two armchairs. There is also a tiny kitchen with a fridge, which is quite nice, because it means we don’t have to bother

going anywhere if we just want to have a cup of refreshing tea. This we do, in preparation for our cultural exploration of this historic place.

Having taken a bit of rest after the car journey, we now want to see everything that Chyhyryn has to offer. The hotel manager has already warned us that the museums close at 17.00 on weekends, so we hurry up.

The Hetman’s Capital Spreading over both sides of the Tyasmyn River, which in past times acted as a powerful water barrier, Chyhyryn was founded as a border-line fortress by the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the 16th century. The town was developing rapidly due to being situated on an important trade route from Kyiv to Crimea. Unfortunately, this meant

From his father Bohdan inherited lands in the region of Chyhyryn (Subotiv village) and lived here with his family, taking part in any and every military campaign. At the time the Ukrainian people were oppressed by their 17th century Polish lords, who controlled and owned the land, all who quashed all national, cultural and religious efforts of Ukrainians. But despite this environment, it took something personal to push Khmelnytsky into taking decisive action. His estate was attacked by servants of a Polish landlord and his property stolen. In the attack, his son was severely injured, and the grief took its toll on Bohdan’s wife, who died shortly afterwards.

Digging Up the Past The initial complex of buildings did not survive, but we visit the newly-built historic reconstruction. Spreading out before us are tall wooden fences, huge gates and beautiful white-washed houses, depicting the architectural appearance of Bohdan’s residence. Walking inside, we see (what we assume was) the central building, while smaller houses along the sides were presumably the embassies of union estates which supported Khmelnytsky. Back in the 17th century, ambas-

In 1595, not far from Chyhyryn, a boy was born into a noble military family. He was Bohdan Khmelnytsky, one of the most important figures in Ukrainian history. He studied at the Lviv Jesuit College and became profoundly knowledgeable in world history. He was also schooled in Latin, Polish, Turkish and French. When he returned home he took part in the Polish-Turkish war in 1620-21, during which he was taken prisoner, languishing in Turkish captivity for two hellish years. He managed to escape and, once back home, he enrolled in a registered Cossack detachment.

It was the last straw. He gathered a band of his Cossacks and in 1647 went to the Zaporizhzhya Sich, where he was elected Hetman. He busied himself and his troops in preparation for a liberation war against Poland. He organised and united thousands of Cossacks and common peasants, who came with pitchforks and axes, ready to fight to free their land. Khmelnytsky made Chyhyryn his official residence and the town became the capital of the newly-created Cossack Republic.

After seeing the complex we visit the museum, which exhibits archaeological items found in Chyhyryn, including authentic sabres and other weapons. We then venture higher, up to Castle Mountain. That served as a natural base for the Chyhyryn Fortress. At first the fortress had wooden walls, but they later (and wisely) replaced them with much more solid earthen walls. In 1678, a Scottish military engineer built a bastion on top of the mountain, which is today called Doroshenko’s Bastion, named after a Ukrainian Hetman.

The military facilities were destroyed later that same year and lay buried under the ground for centuries. It is only recently that archaeologists found the foundation of the bastion. With the help of project sketches made at the time and preserved, the reconstruction effort was made possible in 2007. I peer into the window of the bastion. The walls are more than a metre thick, and I struggle to imagine how people in the 17th century built it using just their bare hands.

We head for the very pinnacle of the mountain, where the statue of Khmelnytsky towers above the town. I look down on the panorama of Chyhyryn – a beautiful provincial town, sinking into green gardens and tied up charmingly by a ribbon of the Tyasmyn River. I try to grasp how it was right here, 300 years ago, that a new and independent state was being formed. Bohdan’s crucial mistake in signing a treaty with Moscow ultimately led to failure, and I can only wonder how different this country would be otherwise.

Meals and More But wonder soon turns to hunger, and we consult the guide-book for a dinner suggestion.

Chyhyryn has three eateries, and we see that one (Shynok restaurant) is just in front of Castle Mountain. Licking our lips, we take a seat on the terrace. As if trying to spoil a good day, we’re then told by the restaurant that we won’t be able to eat there, because an earlier party has emptied them of food! Cursing under my breath, we set off on a long search of a decent place to have dinner. We travel far and wide, first to discover that one of the three cafes is too busy, then to find the final option looking less-than-trustworthy. We eventually return to Shynok and beg them to bring us something to eat, anything! Luckily, the waitress takes pity on us and rustles up a vegetable salad, boiled potatoes and pancakes with cottage cheese. After the last hour it seems like a feast, and tastes even better when we learn it will cost less than 100hrv.

We get up early on Sunday morning and a 10minute drive leads us to one of the most charming and picturesque places in Ukraine – Subotiv village. The landscape slopes down and the village sinks into the fructifying gardens. Watching this beauty I understand why Khmelnytsky chose this place for his private residence. After becoming a hetman, Bohdan built a palace and a church here, which served as a tomb for members of Khmelnytsky’s family. When Bohdan died he was also buried here, but after his death the properties endured a period of decline. In 1664 the village was demolished by Polish robbers who, in the ecstasy of revenge, raided the tombs of both Bohdan Khmelnytsky and his son. St. Elias Church was restored in the middle of the 20th century, with the hetman’s palace today revealing only the initial foundations.

The whole place is deserted this sunny Sunday morning, so we explore the complex with the help of a guide-book and our own intuition. It’s so peaceful that we lie down to rest in the shade of ancient trees, which are probably old enough to carry the memory of the great man himself. We help ourselves to the gifts of the mulberry trees and get in-tune with the spiritual harmony of this historic place.

Where the Sun Don’t Shine We continue our trip, moving in both space and time, to another historical époque. In Chyhyryn neighbourhood there is an ancient forest called Kholodny Yar (Cold Ravine) which comprises more than 6,000 hectares of age-old trees. In these dark and wild forests archaeologists have found the remains of Scythian and Trypillian

International Bike Ride KYIV CITY COUNCIL On 15 July, a group of 26 international bicyclists wheeled into Kyiv from Germany on their tour dedicated to the 50th anniversary of relations between Leipzig and the capital of Ukraine.

The tour started in Leipzig on 2 July and paved the way through Krakow, Ternopil, Zhytomyr finishing in Kyiv, where the riders where congratulated on a successful finish of their victorious race.

YA GALLERY Art fans gathered in the brilliant YA Gallery to witness yet another opening of artistic impression on 6 July.

This latest intriguing project is called Mr Gold, which brings together the works of Artem Volokitin, Andriy Dudchenko, Oleksandr Kadnikov, Andriy Sahaidakovskiy, Sadan, Tiberiy Silvashi, Ruslan Tremba and others. Curated by Pavlo Gudimov, the artists had free reign in the creative process and so the diversity in their imaginations, presenting at times contradictory images, is evident. On the Sofa with...

Those up on the social beat of young Ukrainian musicians will recognise Ivan Dorn as the host of Russian Rollercoasters on music channel M1 and a former half of Para Normalnykh.

But who is he now?

A Changed Man L eaving Anya Dobrydneva in the lurch, Dorn has struck out on his own to see if he’s got what it takes to fly solo. His image has changed, his songs have changed, but has he changed?

A New Beginning

Last year proved an interesting one for Ivan Dorn. His contract had come up with Para Narmalnykh, and after three years of working together with the lovely Anya, Dorn opted out of the partnership to see what he could do on his own. As the artist says, “Whatever is done, is done for the best.” And with that, disappeared for a time.

Back on the scene now, there are those who thought perhaps Ivan Dorn had left music all-together so that he could concentrate more on his television career. But when asked about this, his voice rises ever so slightly and says, “TV host? Do I look like a TV host? Being on television is more like a hobby for me; my first job is to sing.”

To prove it, as ironic as it is, Dorn took part in a television talent show called Star+Star at the end of last year. Dueting with yet another TV host, Vaselisa Frolova, the two took first place leaving National Artist of Ukraine and world-renowned tenor, Volodymyr Hryshko, as well as 31 other starry contestants in the dust. In one of her interviews, Frolova said that the show was a great springboard for Ivan’s career, motivating him to climb higher up musical Mount Olympus.

And so it did: soon afterward, Dorn was seen putting musicians together for his next project.

Achievements In Music Together with three other musicians, who are more like friends to the singer then colleagues, Ivan Dorn has been working on an electro-pop sound full of driving beats with a kickin’ bass, easy listening vocals and melodies that will stick in your musical memory. Dorn says that the team has written seven songs already, with more on the way.

One of the things the former half of ‘a normal pair’ sees about his own personal revolving microcosm is that the attitude of his listeners is also evolving and his audience seems more mature and intellectual now. Extrapolating ever so slightly, I wonder if that is to say his former fans were more childish. Smiling, Ivan skilfully deflects and says, “My songs reflect some emotional moments of my life. But I write them in an abstract way, trying to separate sense from personality, making them open and available for others to relate to.”

Ready for all to see, the songster/television superstar has since released his debut video and is planning on launching another very soon in deed. This of course is typical of any musician standing on the precipice on a new album, and so I ask – is it imminent? “An album requires much time and energy and is absolutely essential.

Moreover, it is so important for me that it will come out only after I have put other things in place. The only thing I can tell you is that it will be special, you have my word.”

As we talk about the break-up, the album, life, it seems to me that our conversation reaches a point that is highly philosophical. For example, Ivan Dorn looks at his profession and in essence his life in a very simple way: for every action we undertake, there is a desired result. “I don’t want to achieve anything special in music,” he starts.

“I just want to live an interesting life! I’m just an ordinary entertainer here to entertain others. But I like it! In fact, my main artistic goal is to hear stadiums singing my songs when I perform.” Which seems to be the wish of any musician anywhere really.

While Dorn may or may not have what it takes to make it on his own, his life also involves travelling, playing sports and reading. And yet carrying out these simple tasks, he says, don’t seem to have the same significance without the music. Perhaps we will just have to wait and see what he’s got in store for us come this autumn. Where the question, has he changed may in fact be answered.
