Ukraine History
Behind Bars Or Worse! The unbearably loud court cases taking place in Ukraine at the moment, which involve both Lutsenko and Tymoshenko, are shaking up the entire international community. Even with our windows closed, locked and boarded shut, there is no escaping the awful racket that occurs down below. A barbaric and unjust system of justice once controlled the people of this land, and it would seem fair to say there has been little done to change it today. Which got us thinking, which other Ukrainians other than Tymoshenko and Lutsenko have spent time behind bars for political reasons? DEMYAN MNOHOHRISHNY (1631-1703) As one of the first Ukrainian political prisoners thrown in jail by Moscow’s tsar in 1672, Mnohohrishny appeared on the Ukrainian political map during a time of civil war. Coming from a simple peasant family, he was one of many to take part in the Khmelnystky-led national liberation struggle. He was well respected not only in military but political affairs and soon assumed the post of colonel in the Chernihiv region. Opposing the Andrusive Agreement which basically made Ukraine subordinate to Moscow and Poland, he was a major force in the rebellion of 1668 which aimed for independence. It was not successful, however, and as the strong-willed hetman was far too troublesome for Moscow, he was arrested and condemned to death. At the last minute, the tsar changed his mind and sentenced Mnohohrishny to a life sentence in Siberia. PETRO KALNYSHEVSKY (1690-1803) Having spent 25 years of his life in jail, Kalnyshevsky was an important judge and later hetman in the Zaporizhka Sich. Receiving the highest honours from the Russian Empire for his bravery and courage during the Russian-Turkish War of 1768-74, he also supported a policy of free trade with other countries, which was obviously in direct contradiction to the colonisation plans of the Empire at the time. Liquidating the independent state as well as the Sich itself in 1775, Ekateryna II arrested the country’s last hetman just a year later, sending him to Solovky with the strictest prohibition against cor-
31.indb 6
respondence of any kind. Having spent so many years in solitude, his eyesight suffered turning him blind and he became reticent and somewhat undomesticated. Receiving a general pardon at the age of 111, he served out the last year of his life at a local monastery. TARAS SHEVCHENKO (1814-1861) This eminent Ukrainian poet and artist is probably the most well known Ukrainian political prisoner. He was bought out of slavery by Russian intellectuals, and having studied at the St Petersburg Art Academy, Shevchenko came to Ukraine in 1893 to see his own people severely oppressed and miserable. Filled with rage and indignation, the poet poured his emotion into his writing. The Dream openly criticises emperors Petr I, Ekateryna II and Nikolai II, while his poem Testament candidly calls for rebellion. Becoming a member of the Kyrylo-Myphodievske Brotherhood, a secret political organisation, Shevchenko fell into disfavour with the current tsar, Nikolai II, and was arrested and sent to Orenburg with strict instructions against writing and drawing. The defiant poet was arrested again in 1850 and 1859, and was under watch by the secret police for the rest of his life. MYKHAYLO HRUSHEVSKY (1866-1934) Recognised as the first president of Ukraine, Hrushevsky was first and foremost a reputed historian, well versed in Ukrainian history. Spending much of his time in Ukraine as well as in big European cities
such as Paris, Berlin, London and Vienna, he returned home in 1916, and accused of ‘adherence to Austria’, he was arrested. Thrown into the Lukyanivska Prison, massive protests in Kyiv, Petrograd and even abroad ensured his release. A year later, he became head of the Tsentralna Rada, the Ukrainian state institution which in 1918 proclaimed the country independent and sovereign. It existed for only 14 months, after which Hrushevsky was forced to go into hiding. Once Ukraine became a Soviet republic, the historian was called to come back and work. The problem was the new rulers remembered well the dangerous political views Hurshevsky held, and called for him to be under constant watch. In 1931, accused of heading and non-existent counter-revolutionary organisation, he was arrested again. Because of his failing health, however, he was soon released. He died just a few years later. LES KURBAS (1887-1937) Founder of the Ukrainian philosophical theatre, outstanding director, actor, dramatist and critic, Les Kurbas first worked in Kyiv with his own band of young and ambitious actors. Staging innovative dramas, they came to be known as the Molody Theatre which can be found today on Prorizna. Opening the Berezil Theatre in Kharkiv, new dramatic aesthetics featuring real problems found their reflection on stage. Such performances did not find approval from the party. Most specifically because Kurbas highlighted features of the individual, which was in huge contradiction to the idea that the system was of far more importance. For these indiscretions, Les Kurbas was sent to Solovky in 1933 and then shot in 1937. Today, Kurbas theatres can be found in both Kyiv and Lviv, in honour not only of his artistic achievements but his grossly realistic representation of the Soviet system. MYKHAYLO BOYCHUK (1882-1937) As one of the most remarkable artists in this country’s history, Mykhaylo Boychuk received his education in Lviv, the art academies of Vienna and Krakow and later in Paris. Studying original masterpieces found in France and Italy, he worked on frescoes and

facades and eventually came to realise that such items, specifically produced during the Byzantine and Kyiv Rus eras, were the pinnacle of beauty and perfection. His absence, and the fact that he was studying European art, was scrutinised by the party. It did not help his cause that a band of artists calling themselves “Boychukistu” were gaining momentum either. Returning to Ukraine in the early part of 1910, Boychuk was one of the founders of what is referred to today as monumental art, and continued to work on the restoration of ancient frescoes in different cathedrals around the country. Leaving the country once more on a trip with his wife Sofia Nelepynska from 1926-27, the party made a formal charge and claimed both he and his wife were spies guilty of counter-revolution activity. He was arrested nearly a decade later and shot a year after that. Sofia Nelepynska was convicted by association and executed the same year. YOSYP SLIPYJ (1892-1984) As a bishop of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church and cardinal of the Catholic Church, Yosyp Slipyj was arrested numerous times for his Christian beliefs. Even in his youth, Slipyj demonstrated a real gift for religious studies and graduated top of his class from the Innsbruck College of Theology. Returning to Ukraine, he became head of the Lviv Theology Academy, founded and became editor of one of the first religious periodicals, supported numerous educational and cultural initiatives, and often promoted the Ukrainian language and culture. Once western Ukraine was taken over by the Soviets, however, his initiatives were seen as a serious threat to the system, and in 1945, along with all other Ukrainian Catholic priests, Slipyj was arrested and sent to Siberia. Sentenced to eight years of hard labour, he fulfilled his prison term and was condemned again in 1953, 1957 and1962 for refusing to renounce his religious views. Having spent a total of 18 years in exile in Siberian camps, he was released in 1963 due only to pressure from the Pope and then US President John F Kennedy. VASYL STUS (1938-1985) Publishing translations by Goethe and Rilke into Ukrainian in the early 60s, Stus also worked as a teacher of Ukrainian language and literature in the eastern regions. Meanwhile, his activities as a social activist were getting him in trouble. One such protest occurred at a Kyiv cinema where he along with a few others stood up and called on everyone present to condemn the massive arrests of Ukrainian intellectuals. It caused such uproar that he was kicked out of the Institute of Literature. But that’s not all. His literary works and constant
31.indb 7
complaints to higher party institutions about the political repression in Ukraine led to his first arrest in 1972. Accused of anti-Soviet propaganda, he was sentenced to five years in prison and three years exile in Mahadan. One of the first things he did upon return in 1979 was officially refuse Soviet citizenship. This led to the second arrest. Protesting the physical torture he faced at the prison camp, he went on a hunger strike and died in 1985. SERHIY PARADZHANOV (1924-1990) Serhiy Paradzhanov was an outstanding Armenian and Ukrainian film director. His direction of the film Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, written by Ukrainian novelist Kotsyubynsky, won 39 international awards and personal letters of congratulations from people like Fellini and Antonioni. Even famous Polish film director, Andrjez Wajda, fell on his knees in front of Paradzhanov thanking him for his masterpiece. Unfortunately, the fame and fortune he received did not save him from being chased by the Soviets. Protesting political persecution in the late 60s, Paradzhanov was finally arrested in 1973 for homosexuality and the promotion of Ukrainian nationalism. He was sentenced to five years in a prison camp. Due to a powerful international campaign that included Fellini, Godar, Viskonti and other respected film directors, however, Paradzhanov was released in 1977. Soviet spies were instructed to keep watch for the rest of his days until his death in 1990. VYACHESLAV CHORNOVIL (1937-1999) As one of the last political prisoners of the Soviets, this literary critic, publicist, politician and activist of the movement against the Russification and discrimination of Ukrainians suffered persecution for years. Refused entry to the Kyiv Pedagogic Institute for his political views, he organised a national opposition movement in the 60s fighting the totalitarian regime the country was facing and the general violation of human rights. He was arrested in 1967 and sentenced to three years in prison camp. Upon his return home, he began an underground magazine which served as a good excuse for a second term in prison. Sentenced to six years in a labour camp and three years in exile, he was falsely accused of supporting the human rights organisation, the Ukrainian Helsinki Group, and was given another five years in prison. Even after these hard years in jail, he continued his active political life and worked as the editor of newspapers and magazines. He was leader of what was soon to become main opposition against President Leonid Kuchma when a mysterious car crash killed him.
“THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT PASSED A RESOLUTION ON POLITICAL REPRESSION IN UKRAINE CALLING FOR LUTSENKO AND OTHER POLITICAL PRISONERS TO BE RELEASED, AND AN END TO SELECTIVE PROSECUTION. DEPUTIES DELIVERED THIS RESOLUTION TO PSHONKA DEMANDING THAT HE FULFIL IT, BUT HE RAN AWAY. HE NEARLY JUMPED OUT THE WINDOW. IT’S A UKRAINIAN PHENOMENON – ‘THE PROSECUTOR GENERAL ON THE RUN’.” YULIA TYMOSHENKO

Only Naked Beauty All Over the World Contemporary Art-Kyiv Contemporary, Mystetsky Arsenal (Lavrska 12)
1 – 13 November This is the sixth time the country’s biggest art forum will be staged, the programme of which is looking to be really exciting. Aside from the more than 40 galleries that are going to be taking part, the exposition will also have several special projects. Made possible by some of the world’s top art curators, they include a Japanese platform featuring six artists; Eastern European Resonance – Armenian, Belorussian, Ukrainian and Azerbaijani artists explore the phenomenon of love as something that unites all people regardless of nationality; an American pop-art project presenting works by Andy Warhol and Steve Kaufman; as well as many others! For more information call 2885226.
No Art – exhibition of photographic works by Vitaliy and Olena Vasylyeva, M17 (Antonovycha 102-104)
From December 1 The M17 gallery is presenting a project called No Art, and allows for the manifestation of each and every person to become his own artist in front of a blank canvas. The gallery warns, however, that you should not expect an exhibition of white walls. Instead, works by Vitaliy and Olena Vasylyeva, a couple who got started in Kharkiv and have often met with postSoviet prejudices, will keep you guessing. For more information call 596-2030
Bryan Ferry (UK, art rock), Palace Ukraine (V Vasylkivska 103)
13 September at 19.00 As a former vocalist of Roxy Music, a popular British band of the 70s, Bryan Ferry has had a turbulent go of it on his own. Recording with the band as well as going solo, his biggest album was Let’s Stick Together released in 1976. He has, however, come out with a few decent hits since. With 21 studio albums under his belt, the latest of which is his newest album, Olympia, there is sure to be a song for just about everyone. Admission is 300 – 3000hrv. For more information call 247−2444.

Tango 3.0 Tour
28 October at 19.00 Bands Mashina Vremeni and Voskresenie have been successfully dictating what constitutes good Russian rock for 40 years. What’s interesting, however, is that they continue to do so, as a concert by ‘Time Machine’ here in Ukraine earlier this year well demonstrated. So as not to waste any time at all, lead singer Andriy Makarevich announced their return for later this fall, and bringing with them the ‘Sunday’ rockers, it’s going to be a marvellous show of revolutionary Soviet rock. Tickets are 250 – 700hrv. For more information call 247−2444.

Bryan Stripped Bare
These guys are not world famous, but they should be. Taking classic world music and mixing it up with beats and breaks reminiscent of the sounds coming from top DJs around the globe, the Gotan trio have done something really special. Coming together in 1999, Philippe Cohen Solal, Eduardo Makaroff and Christoph H. Müller love love love everything tango (as you can see if you look close enough at their name). Featured in Schindler’s List, The Scent of a Woman and Shall We Dance, their tracks are so intense they will send shivers up your spine. Deserving of all the acclaim they receive and more, take these guys in. Tickets are 200 – 1900hrv. For more information call 247-2316
Impressed by the sensationally warm welcome they received in Kyiv last spring, Anastasiya and Denys Matvienko are coming to the capital again, this time with a new modern ballet performance. Staged by Slovenian choreographer Edvarg Klyug to the music of Radiohead, the creators of Radio and Juliet say the story does not follow the old English version by Shakespeare; instead creating a new adaptation of dramatic tension. Portrayed from a totally new angle, the same elements of love, devotion, betrayal and death are still the focus of this story. However, with this cast of incredible talent, no one is going to complain. Tickets TBA. For more information call 279-1169.
The West Coast Attacks! XZibit (US, rap, hip-hop), Stereo Plaza (Kikvidze 17)
2 November at 21.00 For the first time in the history of our young country, the hugely popular XZibit is playing a show in Kyiv. Famous for the luxury that surrounds him and his trueto-life lyrics, the singer is ready to exhibit his entire multi-talented nature to Ukrainian hip-hoppers and rappers alike. Creating music over the course of the last 10 years or so, his latest album Restless 2 will bring the best showpieces of his collection for the public to sigh and scream over! Tickets are 300hrv. For more information call 222-8040.

Singing and Dancing Ukraine Veryovka Choir, Palace Ukraine (V Vasylkivska 103)
20 October at 19.00 As one of the best Ukrainian groups in the country, we’re sure you know about Veryovka Choir. Taking you on a trip to another world this fall, breathtaking Ukrainian folk songs, spectacular dancing and soulinspiring music are what await. Receiving applause from Ukraine and beyond, this next concert is one that will include beloved repertoire as well as new compositions organically combined to turn out wonderfully traditional as well as modern Ukrainian culture. Tickets are 80 – 500hrv. For more information call 247-2316.

9 September at 21.00
Boys and Ballet Valeriy Mykhailovsky (St Petersburg) in concert, Kyiv Operetta (V Vasylkivska 53/3)
18 October at 19.00 Valeriy Mykhailovsky is an eminent Russian ballet dancer who has become rather well know due to his band of male ballerinas. Celebrating 40 years of work, Mykhailovsky comes to Kyiv this year with an evening of classical ballet compositions, masterpieces of world choreographic repertoire and original works put together by the man himself. Taking you backstage and beyond, this mini-play features all of ballet’s intricate stages, starting from the first rehearsal to the event’s premiere. Shocking is one word to describe it! Tickets are 100 – 1000hrv. For more information call 287-2630.
Their name might suggest something a little less party and a little more grade four storybook, but duo Moonbeam are fully deserving of all accolades they have been receiving as of late. Playing together since 2003, brothers Pavlo and Vitaliy are considered one of the best representatives of Russian dance music in the world. Even DJMag puts them at number 76 among their lineup of Top 100 DJs saying these two are responsible for countless deep, melodic and atmospheric techno tracks. Supported by trusted DJs Tiesto, Above & Beyond, Armin van Buuren, Markus Schulz and more, their new album, The Secret, is going to blow you away. Tickets are 150hrv. For more information call 222-8040.

It’s Alright! East 17 (UK, pop), Stereo Plaza (Kikvidze 17)
30 October at 21.00 The 90s saw a number of boy bands trying to make it in music. One most everyone will remember is East 17, leaving what was then a very young Take That in the dust. Putting together eighteen Top 20 hits and four Top 10 albums, songs House of Love, Deep and It’s Alright were what put them on the world map. Due to Brian Harvey’s drug-related habits which started to become a huge problem nearing the end of the 90s, East 17 incurred “one of the greatest breakups in pop history”. Lucky for us, they’re back together almost 15 years later, and without Harvey are ready to play for a whole new generation of fans. Tickets are 275hrv. For more information call 222-8040.
Kyiv has started a series of parties in recent months in which participants learn the whereabouts of these highly selective events only after they’ve paid for their ticket. It sounds like a scam. However, organisers assure us it is totally legit, and are saying this next clandestine celebration is going to be bigger and better than ever. With a guest list in the hundreds, medicine is the theme. Guests are asked to show up in hospital scrubs and dressing gowns to be thoroughly checked by the sexy staff on hand. Too shy? DJ Mario Yard, DJ Tori Blanco, DJ Marsi Morales, DJ Essteticcs, DJ Razer, DJ Kayun, DJ Bright & Perfect along with MC Alex Key will get you in the mood. Admission is 300hrv on the night or L-160hrv and G-250hrv if purchased in advance. For more information, call the doctor at 063660-4049.
Nothing Weak About This Girl Skin (Skunk Anansie, UK), Sullivan Room (Prorizna 8)
9 September at 23.00 The leader of London’s aristocratically alternative Skunk Anansie Deborah Dyer, also known as Skin, is making her way to Ukraine this month. Founded in 1994 by Dyer and bassist Richard Lewis, the group split up in 2001 and Skin pursued a solo career recording two albums independently. In 2009, the group resumed its activities, and releasing its fourth studio album the following year, fans and critics welcomed them with open arms. Their greatest success has always been as a team as songs “Weak”, “Hedonism” and “Secretly” can attest. But having lead singer here with her turntable is a pretty good thing too. Tickets are 250hrv. For more information call 066-485-5555.

The Dirt: Thank you, we may. That, however, doesn’t rule out the possibility of a dirty producer. And in fact, it is often because of an artist’s producer that he or she succeeds. What we want to know is where your producer had run off to when the cuts for Eurovision were taking place? The Plea: The Ukrainian selection for Eurovision is a mysterious contest, of which drama, tradition and tales are a necessary part. Some of it is true, some of it is completely false. To find out which is which, however, you’ll have to take a look at official statements from the organisers themselves: fortunately there are plenty. The Dirt: Are you just trying to make excuses because of the accusations that your were lip-synching? The Plea: This is such a baseless accusation. Anyone who has ever been to any one of my concerts knows it’s me singing. I have even turned the music off and sang without any instrumentation at all. I need no phonogram! The Dirt: There were lots of rumours about you and your Public Star 3 partner, Asan Bilyalov. While having a boyfriend is of course in itself not a crime, the fact that he’s married does change things ever so slightly. What have you got to say for yourself? The Plea: Of course it’s not true! He has a wonderful wife and I have good relations with his family. He is a serious-minded and decent family man. End of story. The Dirt: Okay then, let’s talk a little bit about what almost every girl in the world dreams of at some point in her life: marriage. Is it your goal to find a rich guy to put you up? And if so, do you think your singing career is the way to go about this? The Plea: What are you even talking about? I’m still a kid, and I think I’ll probably always be a child inside. And no, of course that’s not my main aim. I need no one who might alienate me! That said, I do think I’ll make a great mom! I will take my kids on tour with me and that’s going to be fun! The Dirt: Just recently, we found out that Russian queen of pop, Alla Puhacheva, invited you personally to take part in her Crimea Music Fest competition. What’s the connection there? The Plea: Well, we have one mutual relative – music! To be honest, it felt so good when I heard Alla Puhacheva had personally listened to my songs. And then to be personally invited to take part in this marvellous contest, it’s wonderful!
in the Ukrainian pop arena. But that doesn’t mean she is not without a few skeletons in her closet. We get her on the stand to find out the truth. The Dirt: Zlata darling, the promotion of any musical artist or group requires a lot of dough, and we want to know whether the cash is clean. What have you got to say? The Plea: You know, I hear people talk all the time about this, and neither my parents nor I have anything to be ashamed of. I’ve also heard that some people think I may be the daughter of some Crimean oligarch! It’s absolutely rubbish! If you want to know the truth, I feel quite sorry for my parents because they live quite a modest life. Sometimes I do wish it were different so that I could have a little financial support. But then there are days when I think that maybe it’s better this way: it motivates me to move forward and make sure my music and my voice only improve. If anyone wants to know anything more about my finances they can contact my producer, Mykhailo Nekrasov, personally, and ask him.
31.indb 17
The Dirt: It seems that you have been targeting Europe where your music career is concerned. What are Ukrainians supposed to think about that? Are you gearing up to leave? The Plea: One does not need to leave one’s homeland in order to write music: it lives inside the human conscious. Moreover, I can make good quality music with a help of modern technology anywhere in the world. The most important thing is that I do it with love. I will not let anything interfere with that, and will put as much effort into my career as I absolutely can. The Dirt: Ah, but Ms Ognevich, that doesn’t answer the question. We’ll leave it alone for now but maintain the right to return to it at anytime. Moving on. We’ve heard a tale or two about you planning to start up a political campaign. Is that true? The Plea: Once again, complete fiction. Where do people come up with this stuff? While I can’t say that I’m not interested in politics, I would like it to be known that in fact I am quite concerned with the social and political life of Ukraine and the world in general. I believe, however, that it takes a very special kind of person to work in this sphere, and that’s not me. And yet, the politician’s soul is much like that of a woman’s – a constant riddle!

Happy Birthday, Ukraine! MAIDAN NEZALEZHNOSTI On 24 August, the country celebrated its 20th birthday! And while there was much going on all over the city, our very own Square of Independence was the place to be. Unfortunately, the horrendous demonstrations in front of the courthouse couldn’t be stopped, leading us to wonder whether our current politicians have any sort of decency about them at all. In spite of their continuous noise, thousands could be found milling about Khreshchatyk, enjoying the festivities and the sentiment of the day.

A Caribbean Island Amidst the Dnipro ROCHA RESTAURANT On 27 August, the Kyiv Cigar Club gathered on the banks of the Dnipro for their annual Summer Big Smoke. The Caribbean theme chosen for this year’s event meant the dress code was smart casual, and without a tie to be seen anywhere – black or otherwise – people got straight down to the business of having fun! The great location and excellent food made for good moods all round. As always the KCC people sold raffle tickets to raise money for their charitable activities, and as always it was a great gathering of friends old and new.

KINOPALACE On 25 August, the Chamber took its members to the movies for the premiere of another Hollywood blockbuster, The Change Up. Having accidentally switched bodies, a married father and his single best friend quickly find out that their lives are nowhere near as rosy as they once thought. Drawing parallels with the kind of teamwork often required in a big company, it was hoped that ACC members clued in on the importance of support, discarding the idea that the grass is always greener on the other side.

A 21 Century Cossack Singing, dancing and fighting: it’s what every Cossack is good at. We know Haydamaky is good at singing and they’re not bad at dancing, but are they any good with a sword? We sat down with frontman Oleksandr Yarmola to get the goods. he band Aktus began their career in 1991, and playing a lot of reggae, ska and punk, they were a big part of the underground scene here in Kyiv. Joining forces with the sopilka/vocalist Oleksandr Yarmola just two years later, the band began incorporating a very Ukrainian ethos into their work and soon re-appeared under a new name: Haydamaky.
cifically in the 90s. I was trying to create a band that would be accepted in this atmosphere, while at the same time, playing music in Ukrainian for Ukrainians.” Playing at some of the best European festivals in England, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Germany and others, the band also works with foreign labels too. It is something Yarmola is quite proud of and defends the band saying, “Pop music is developing rapidly in Ukraine right now, and that is not my thing. I was brought up on real rock: music from Led Zeppelin and The Doors. It is for this reason we have turned our attention to Europe.” Travelling extensively and meeting some extremely interesting people, their contracts with EMI and East Block Music have been the result. Yarmola admits the contracts at times have a negative influence on the band, often putting the boys and the music they play into a category. But he says they also stay disciplined this way, wasting little, if any, time.
Real Rock
A Strong Character
As a term that was reserved for 18th century revolutionaries in western Ukraine, the group was armed with ideas. It was something that did not go unnoticed by the international community either, as the EMI record label signed them up almost as soon as they heard them in 2001. Incidentally, this was the first Ukrainian band the record company had ever signed. Haydamaky is one of the few Ukrainian groups to have more concerts abroad than they do at home. The reason for this, Yarmola explains, is not an accident. “I planned this from the very beginning. I travelled to Europe a lot and always found their lifestyle to be very different from that which we had here in Ukraine, spe-
Much like the men they have come to represent, Oleksandr Yarmola is an interesting character to talk to. His opinion is not always the official position of the band, and yet is strong enough to be heard among the din. So much so that he’s started his own solo project. “This should not be taken as an indication that I am leaving the band. We have been playing for ten years now and I’ve come up with a lot of new ideas. Haydamaky, however, has a certain ideology, and if I were to try to incorporate some of the things I’d like to do I would ruin this image. That said, just like any other artist, I want my ideas to be heard, and so you’ll hear Yarema – not only my nickname but the name of this new project – soon!” One of the things Yarmola would like to do with the band is take it to the next level; something he sees involving a lot of marketing. He wants people to listen to Haydamaky at home, at work, while they’re driving to work. “Financially, it’s better for the band to take part in festivals and do shows. But I would like it if people would buy our CDs.” Starting work on a new album, the boys had a busy summer playing concerts throughout the country. But this also seemed to be a good time for Yarmola to think a bit more about the purpose of his life’s work: “Every artist should be himself, should be strong and should not waste time on useless things. In the end, you need to stay one on one with your work, so that at some point it becomes perfect and the result is one you like. " Getting to the crux of this paramilitary band member, Oleksandr Yarmola is a rockin’ folk singer who can cut a rug, and often does, when he’s on stage. Unfortunately he reserves comment on his ability with a sword, which can only leave us to think that perhaps he’s a better lover than a fighter.
