Master Class Lending a Hand Yulia is actually a friend of mine and has been busy with crafts of all sorts for quite some time. Her internet shop of handmade goods gets a lot of hits, and she’s found that once someone has made one purchase, they often return. Popping round for a visit and our very own master class, we are directed to her workshop, Murushki, where we’ll be going home with bracelets (which I’m sure will be lovely but will be passed on to some girl of my acquaintance) and candlestick holders (those I might keep for myself). Beginning with the bracelet, Yulia says it’s a nice easy item to start off with and is something everyone can do. What you’re going to need: * 1 round wooden/plastic base * 1-metre piece of lace (any colour) * needle and thread (same colour as your chosen lace) * scissors While we’re not sure why you wouldn’t have scissors, all other items can be found in craft supply shops around the city for a very reasonable price. Or, take one of your old bracelets and give it a second life! The one thing you’ll need to ensure here is that it is a solid piece of either wood or plastic. “One of the great things about making not only your own jewellery, but anything is that you can take things that you have lying around at home and turn them into something you can use. I would suggest you take a look around your home or apartment: I can assure you you’ll ﬁnd lots of things you don’t really need or use but don’t want to throw away. Experiment with these items, and you might ﬁnd that you’ll turn these eyesores into things you will use again.”

PALACE UKRAINE On 11 September, Ukraine admirably demonstrated the beauty of our country in the competition for Miss Ukraine 2011. Getting some top names together to join the jury, we had socialite Paris Hilton, Miss World 2003 Rosana Davidson, actor Jean Claude Van Damme and French footballer Marcel Desailly in town. The evening was full of tough decisions and a bit of calamity as Paris Hilton and our own Slavic blonde bombshell, Russian host Kseniya Sobchak, got a bit confused about who the actual winner was. Naming a different girl completely, the two blondes quickly corrected themselves, and called Miss Vinnytsya Yaroslava Kuryacha up to the stage where she was given the title and crowned Miss Ukraine 2011.

NAMU On 9 September, the National Art Museum of Ukraine held an opening for the exhibition called Hnylytskiy. Cadavre Exquis. Hnylytskiy was a pretty big name in the Ukrainian art sphere, and created thoughtprovoking masterpieces right up until his sudden death in 2009. Dedicated to his 50th birthday, this latest exhibition covers 30 years of the artist’s work. Many gathered to commemorate the occasion, and honour a man whose history is unmistakably intertwined with the history of contemporary art in Ukraine. The exhibition is open 23 October – check it out.

HYATT Celebrating its 9th year in operation, The Ukrainian Connoisseur’s Club hosted the ﬁrst gathering of likeminded gourmand members this season at the Hyatt’s Grill Asia on 8 September. With 45 participants, this was the second-largest event in the organisation’s history. But as dinner, drinks and a splash in their pool were all included, who wouldn’t have wanted to be there..? MIRONOVA GALLERY American photographer William John Kennedy has brought his works to the capital of Ukraine, the exhibition for which opened 8 September. According to some sources, Kennedy is thought to be the only American photographer to have taken any shots of pop art idols Andy Warhol and Robert Indiana, bringing him huge popularity worldwide. True or not, the opening night was a pretty big deal. If you weren’t there, you’ve still got your chance! The exhibition remains open until 29 September.
