What’s Up

Can the Left Hand Please Introduce Itself to the Right Hand?

S

ooty and Sweep (google it if you’re not British), Laurel and Hardy, Abbot and Costello, Cheech and Chong, French and Saunders, and Morecambe and Wise are all well known comedy acts who often relied heavily on miscommunication between them to make us laugh. And so we should laugh heartily at the actions this weekend of the World of Comedy’s latest laugh-a-minute double act – Yanukovych and Azarov. Let’s start down in Yalta where Azarov was attending the 8th Yalta European Strategy Forum along with a number of EU representatives including the Polish foreign minister and former British PM, Tony Blair. During this forum, where Azarov had the chance to present his views on all manner of subjects clearly and succinctly, he instead decided to comment on the Tymoshenko trial stating: “Connecting serious global questions about free trade agreements and the (EU) association to a specific legal process is not only wrong, it’s immoral.” That in itself is the best one-liner we’ve heard in a long time. It’s just so Soviet! If you’re being accused of doing something wrong, immediately and wholeheartedly accuse your accusers of the exact same thing. The EU says he’s wrong for bringing criminal charges against her, and he immediately turns round and says, no-no-no, you’re wrong (after which you half expect him to stick his tongue out before turning and trouncing off down the street like a petulant school boy). It highlights just how much this ageing politician is still rooted in the old mentality. How on earth he thinks he can run a modern capitalist democracy we’ve no idea. So side-splittingly funny was this line from him we thought he’d do very well as a solo stand up act. But then the other half of this comedy duo piped up, and it was clear, as with all double acts, the sum is greater than the individual parts.

34.indb 4

While Azarov was in Yalta throwing insults at the people he’s hoping to woo, our big beloved Yanukovych was in the very same place saying something completely different. In fact, he was back peddling so furiously it looked as though the chain on his bike was about to break under the strain. He started by calling the trial “very painful” while sporting a furrowed brow and an expression of sincere empathy. Everyone waited with bated breath. On whom could he possibly place the blame for this fiasco that he allegedly started? Was he going to hang one of his underlings out to dry? Was he going to thrust a scapegoat into the arena that everyone could stab at? Well, yes and no. The scapegoat he set forth before the world was not of human form, nor animal for that matter (the dog hadn’t eaten his homework apparently). The criminal in this oh-so-criminal of cases was, according to our lord and master, the criminal justice system itself! Ta da! He explained that the criminal code dates back to 1962 when Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union. “That,” he said, “is undoubtedly nonsense.” He went on to say that the criminal code would be modified this year, and the implication clearly is that such an overhaul would decriminalise the charges under which Tymoshenko is being charged. Genius! We were all wondering how he was going to dig himself out of the whole he’d put himself in, and that, apparently, is how he’s going to do it. It’s a wonderful thing when a country’s criminal code becomes the criminal. And throughout his speech, he apparently knew nothing of the one Azarov was giving blaming the EU for everything. So there we have it. Watch out for the world’s hottest comedy double act, Vik and Mick, appearing at a theatre near you,

24 September at 19.00 The New Era Orchestra is an academic professional group of musicians who have found success without financial support from the government. The reason? This evening will be no exception as Ukraine’s very own modern composer Zoltan Almashi will be taking the lead. A new season of classical music is at your fingertips, and this evening promises to be full of surprises; regardless of the fact that ‘classical’ and ‘surprises’ don’t often go together. Staging Modern Literature The Anthem of Democratic Youth (play in 2 acts), I Franko Ukrainian Drama Theatre (Ivana Franka 3)

23 September at 19.00 The Franko National Theatre is experimenting with a novel by one of Ukraine’s most popular modern writers, Serhiy Zhadan. His book of the same name features six stories of the real Ukraine and its modern-day heroes. Only their gallantry lies not in winning the heart of a princess or fighting for the motherland, but in surviving the crazy, absurd and unpredictable world of Ukraine. Not to end on a sour note, the play itself does include a little lyricism, as love, hope and friendship all ring true. Tickets are 15 – 170hrv. Oops…She Did it Again Britney Spears (US, pop), Palace Sport (Sportyvna Pl 1)

27 September at 19.00 Britney Spears was an absolute icon for youth in 2000 when her debut album ...Baby One More Time hit music store shelves; and let’s be honest the shelves over in Petrivka couldn’t keep up either. While she had taken a break from music due to, shall we say, erratic behaviour, she’s now up to her seventh studio album (if you can believe it) called Femme Fatale. Ranked number six on Forbes Most Powerful and Influential celebrities in the world in 2010, you might want to get your butts in the seats for this one: drama seems to follow Britney wherever she goes and this concert will be no exception. Kyiv Culture

Every Ot Ukraine is famous for its political scandals, beautiful women and great horilka. Next year, however, the country has the chance to add to that list and be famous for its art! Coming to Ukraine for the first time ever, it has just been announced that the internationally-recognised Biennale will be here in our capital. Chatting with the head curator of this next artistic exhibition, the cultured and sophisticated British art-historian David Elliott tells it like it is.

I

n the past, the Biennale has appeared in major cities like Venice, Sidney and Istanbul. It has attracted millions of tourists each and every year it has been organised, and now it’s time for Kyiv to be included on that list of artistic cities. As a metropolis that lays claim to an incredible history, replete with ancient masterpieces, contemporary art is something we also do quite well. It is for these two reasons the Biennale, held at the massive Mystetsky Arsenal, will be here in our city come May next year.

An Artistic Platform The Biennale acts as a kind of marker in the development of artistic civilisation. Ukraine, among others, has been lacking in such a large-scale event. Daring to hold this international art forum in our capital next year, the country will not only show itself to the world, but those who attend will also be able to see the world in Ukraine. This alone is a huge incentive for Ukraine’s artists of today working in the contemporary genre, and requires them to step up to the accepted standards of Europe. Before anyone even sees what’s inside, however, we already have a trump card in hand: the architectural showpiece that is Mystetsky Arsenal. Turning into a museum of world contemporary art, uniting Ukrainian authen-

ticity and international trends, this venue will be home to a number of well-respected art-critics and curators over the coming months. A couple worth noting include the above-mentioned head curator, David Elliot; the Mystetsky Arsenal custodian in charge of special projects, Oleksandr Solovyov; and Russian art-critic and curator responsible for theory and education, Kateryna Dyogot. Supported by the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Kyiv municipal authority, Mystetsky Arsenal is promising a high-level art-event. Leading the team, Mr Elliot is a well-known British curator and art-historian who was invited specifically to make this first Kyiv Biennale one to remember. Having nicely come from the Sidney Biennale held in 2010, turning Australia into an artistic sensation, he himself is intensely interested in contemporary art, Russian avant-garde art and the visual culture that is Eastern Europe and Asia, and is known for his knack at integrating Western and not-so-Western art. However, he also believes that Ukraine has exhausted its image of a post-Soviet country on the international scene and that it’s time for it to show off its cultural potential: “It’s important to provide an international platform for Ukrainian artists, which does not make allowances for them but allows them, from that very same platform, to see the very best works of the world.”

7 October at 22.00

Duo of Darkness Dope DOD (NL, rap), Arena (Baseina 2a)

8 October at 22.00 The Rap trio Dope DOD has not been a trio for that long. The time they have been together, however, which is only a short couple of years, has been spent productively in the lab turning out tunes

the likes of which anyone into paranoid thrash is going to enjoy. Groningen is where Dopey Rotten, Jay Reaper, and Skits Vicious came together, and stages around the world are where they are headed. There’s one in Kyiv that’s got their names on it this October. For tickets or more information call 093-947-7476.

Xlib has activated a monthly gathering called Addicted, and to mark the big event they have invited American Gerard Hanson to play live. This is a huge event not simply because we’ve got the talented Mr Hanson to kick off this undertaking, but because the iconic DJ is rarely seen outside of his home country. Living in Texas is what draws out his individualism, and working with only just a few labels, keeps him highly sought after. Tickets are 80hrv. For more information call 417-3233.

Boys and Ballet Valeriy Mykhailovsky (Russia), Kyiv Operetta (V Vasylkivska 53/3)

While the lead singer of Boombox Andriy Khlyvnyuk may appear to be reserved and aloof, his face is very often seen in various publications and on numerous music channels. Focusing on what he is doing as opposed to how he looks, the band’s music and lyrics have always carried great weight. Having released their most recent compilation last year called Everything Included, this particular show includes Video Jockey Cosmo, and will hopefully bring to life that same great philosophy Boombox is known and loved for. Admission is 220 – 650hrv. For more information call 288-5074.

18 October at 19.00 Valeriy Mykhailovsky is an eminent Russian ballet dancer who has become rather well-known due to his band of male ballerinas. Celebrating 40 years of work, Mykhailovsky comes to Kyiv this year with an evening of classical ballet compositions, masterpieces of world choreographic repertoire and original works put together by the man himself. Taking you backstage and beyond, this mini-play features all of ballet’s intricate stages, starting from the first rehearsal to the event’s premiere. Shocking is one word to describe it! Bill Phelps, the New York photographer famous for his spacebreaking and laconic works, is coming to Kyiv. Self-taught and sovereign, Phelps garners inspiration from vintage images, art and cinema which he then turns

Ukraine Today

A Cosy Kyiv Community

Crazy work schedules, annoying traffic jams, everyday deadlines, irritating phone calls and other attributes of life lived in a metropolis tire everyone from time to time. Giving up and leaving it all behind sounds pretty good when you’re in such a predicament. But at some point your better judgement kicks in and everything goes back to the way it was before: busy, busy, busy.

W

hile that might be the scenario for most of us, there is a group of people not far from the city limits who have recently opted not to let their careers dictate their lives. Taking their wives, their children and a handful of provisions, they moved to the ‘burbs where they have become the Berkivtsi Brotherhood.

Not Bad, Different Human prejudice is often invincible. So travelling to the Berkivtsi Brotherhood, also known as Pyatykhatky (five houses in Ukrainian), on this warm autumn day, I come packed with a few preconceptions about such communities and what I am going to find. Ready for anything – a sex cult, a group of junkies, or none of the above – I give Mykhaylo Khymych a call. A wellknown artist in Kyiv and beyond, he is the one responsible for this little commune. I have not met him. But on the phone he sounded friendly

34.indb 16

and easy-going and invited not just me but my family out to spend an hour, day, or the rest of our lives with them. Giving no exact address, we are instructed to head toward the Berkivtsi cemetery and then turn right at the tallest poplar. Following his instructions to the letter, when we arrive, Mykhaylo is waiting for us with a child in his arms. It is ten o’clock in the morning, and seeing we have brought our own child with us, the Kyiv artist leads us to a newly built school right on the territory of the Pyatykhatky settlement. The children are school-age this year and so are in need of a building to study. Just like the children of Kyiv, their educational year started September 1. “We are well-educated people,” says Mykhaylo. “We have Masters Degrees and PhDs in science and art and we can educate our children ourselves.” While that may be true, education here differs ever so slightly from that which you’ll find in tra-

ditional state schools in Ukraine. But that’s not to say it’s inappropriate. For example, instead of learning their letters from text books, the kids here sculpt them out of clay. Once the letters dry, they will be buried, and after a few years, will be carefully dug up. So in addition to learning the alphabet, they will also learn archaeology.

News Travels Fast With the kids busy at school, Mykhaylo shows us the rest of the area. Situated in the dacha district of Berkivtsi, the building itself is quite remarkable. Slightly reminiscent of the traditional Ukrainian mud hut, it is a two storey structure done in a pale rosy colour with small windows chaotically placed throughout. With five semidetached houses, each with a separate kitchen, bathroom and bedroom, there is also an art-café and bathhouse for all. It is surreal. But perhaps the most interesting thing about Pyatykhatky is that it has been built entirely from second-hand building materials. Using sawdust, wood, bricks, glass bottles and clay, Mykhaylo says they knew a couple of drivers whose job it was to remove trash from old building sites. Instead of throwing it away, they brought it here. Khymych himself gathered kilo after kilo of old glass bottles from surrounding territories which they later used as one of their most reliable building materials. “Clay fits tightly to glass. But what’s more, empty glass is a great conductor of heat, which, of course, we use to our benefit.” Built in just nine months, Pyatykhatky is a current example of cheap and ecological housing. Fashioned in the shape of the letter G, there is a terrace on the inside. Paved in broken tiles, which inhabitants retrieved compliments of a DIY shop not far off, this is a communal space with tables, chairs and benches. It also serves as a creative space whereby any one of the five families and their children can decorate the walls of their house as they wish. Murals, statues and toys are scattered everywhere, which truly reflects the creative disorder and artistic freedom inherent in this community. It is about 11.00 when we walk up, and many residents are still sleeping. There are some, however, who are up and helping themselves to beer, greeting us with glasses. They relay that there was a concert here last night: Ocheretyany Kit played well on into the morning and the party will continue this evening. We say no thanks to the hops and instead offer members of the community a piece of the homemade cake we have brought with us. Others surface at the mention of food, and I have to suppress a giggle at how quickly news travels in this community.

Don’t Define This makes for a great opportunity to talk and get to know the residents a little better. Fekla, for example, whose real name is Zhenya, worked in the outside world as a waitress. It’s a position

Take Me Out!

The Grand and Gracious

Grill Asia One of the things I considered doing for this review was writing the word Hyatt, and beside it the words exceptional, unforgettable, delicious. Somehow I think this might have been seen as slightly less interesting than writing about what everybody wore and then what everybody ate. As I’m a jeans girl myself, I’ll leave discussions of design up to those more qualified. I shall, however, try to recount the evening’s tastes, smells and experiences as best I can. My apologies to the chef in advance: the real thing is much, much better.

I

t is Thursday. It is raining. It is the start of what looks as though it might be an unpleasant fall, and to be honest, I am still suffering from the effects of an inordinate amount of good vino consumed the night before. What I’d really like to do is crawl into bed. Alas, I am needed at the Hyatt’s Grill Asia for TUUC’s monthly event and I shall not disappoint.

Fashionably Late Walking into the grand gallery that is the reception at Tarasova 5 always takes me aback. It is big, yes, and grand, but it is also gracious, and that’s T F

I Say Old Chap BRITISH AMBASSADOR’S RESIDENCE Bate Toms and his British Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce along with British Ambassador HE Leigh Turner, got the whole British community together on 14 September so that they could all, well, be very British together. It was a beautiful sunny evening, which the Ambassador was particularly happy about, and everyone had a very pleasant time, sipping wine and getting to know new people. There was the ubiquitous business card lottery in which some lucky people won some wonderful prizes.
