What’s Up Memorial to Stalin’s Victims Unveiled

Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski showed some solidarity with Yanukovych on his visit last week, when the two unveiled a memorial to the thousands of Ukrainians, Poles and others killed by the Soviet dictator Josef Stalin in Bykivnia, just outside Kyiv. And we must say, it’s about time a memorial to those who died at the hands of the mass murderer was erected, rather than statues to the heinous individual himself. The memorial stands on grounds where up to 120,000 people are believed to be buried, a number that includes 3,500 Poles executed in the Kyiv region by the Soviet secret police in early 1940. “By jointly exposing and condemning the crimes of Stalinism and restoring historical justice, we not only fulfil our duty to the dead, but we also fulfil our duty to future generations,” Yanukovych said. And those must be the most sensible words we’ve heard coming from Ukraine’s president for quite some time. If only there were more…

Ukraine Agrees $3bn Loan-for-Corn Deal with China

With the walls to the IMF tightly shored up and Ukraine’s trade deficit growing rapidly, the government is desperate to find money, and it appears they’re about to sign an unusual agreement with China in order to do so.

The agreement, which is expected to be signed any day now, will give Ukraine access to $3 billion in credit in exchange for supplies of corn. The deal expands the scheme Beijing has used in the past to secure energy through so-called oil-for-loans deals with other countries such as Venezuela, and highlights concerns about global food security. The deal could be quite a good one for Ukraine as it guarantees the export of 3 million tonnes of corn every year, which will be supplied at market

Reporters Without Borders Admonish Defamation Bill

You’ll have read in last week’s What’s On that Yanukovych allies in the Verkhovna Rada tentatively approved a bill that would make defamation a crime punishable by up to five years in prison and hefty fines. The bill, quite clearly aimed at journalists in the country, has sparked outrage within the international media watchdog, Reporters Without Borders, who’ve said it could “threaten the very existence of independent journalism”. Currently, alleged libel can only result in a civil lawsuit. But, if the new bill is signed by the President, it would restore a Soviet-era practise that Ukraine abolished 11 years ago. Reporters Without Borders said that “such a return to the past would have a major impact on freedom of information in Ukraine… Journalists already have to confront many dangers and an increase in self-censorship inside news organisations.” Ukrainian journalists have, as you would expect, spoken out against the bill, with Alexander Akymenko, an editor at Forbes Ukraine, somewhat wittily posting on his Facebook page: “Now you need to have an already packed bag at home. Just in case.” Serhiy Leshchenko, an investigative journalist with the online newspaper Ukrainska Pravda, whose reports are strongly critical of Yanukovych, reckons he could be the first behind bars if the new law comes into effect. But we here at What’s On think our Neil Campbell might beat him to it, having called the president anything from a lumbering oaf to a gorilla.

Olympians Become Landlords

Last week, Kyiv City Council voted 78 in favour (out of 120 deputies) of awarding our Ukrainian Olympians with a very generous gift for all their hard work. Athletes were heard complaining as of late (and rightfully so) about the conditions in which they were made to prepare before the Games, so we were thinking the city had gone in for a few upgrades to the Olympic training

centre. Instead, they've opted for the more individual approach, and have presented each competitor with 0.1ha of land in the city’s prime housing districts, Pechersk and Holosiivskiy. While this seems a very charitable contribution indeed, only residents of the capital are in on this deal, which inlcudes five medalholders from this year's Summer Olympics and eight from the Paralympics. Drawing an interesting line between those sportsmen who live in Kyiv and those who do not, it seems quite clear who the country values more…

Kyiv Breaks Another Record

Ukraine’s debt has reached massive proportions this year, and at the moment hovers somewhere around the $129 billion mark. While this is a rather large number, it is by no means a record for the country. The debt our capital city has racked up, however, is another story. Deputy Head of Kyiv City Council Ruslan Kramarenko went on record earlier this month regarding Kyiv’s small spending problem. Quoting $800 million as the magic number, our IOUs are well past the soda pop stage, and into the realm of 747s and small private islands. If you were thinking that the debt was caused by Euro 2012 miscalculations, you certainly wouldn’t be alone. You would, however, be partially wrong, as our money problems stem as far back as 2004 – 2005 (a rather tumultuous time in the country’s history). Regardless of the cause, it is a problem that needs solving and quickly. Interestingly enough, the Kyiv City Council shares this opinion, and have already come up with a plan. Selling municipal home loan debentures, they hope to pay off the hefty sum of $250 million by November. The only thing that worries us is the absence of buyers in front of Kyiv City Council. The Pavlo Galagan Collegium is opened in Kyiv. As a private male college, some of its graduates include scientists Oleksandr Bohomolets, Ahafangel Krymsky, as well as poets Mykola Zerov and Mykhaylo DrayKhmara. Today, this same building, found off Khmelnytskoho, houses the Museum of Literature.

Marshrutkas are Dangerous!

The Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, one of the oldest Ukrainian Christian holy sites, closes as a monastery and is proclaimed a museum. Monastic life is rejuvenated only in 1988, and continues today.

Head of Kyiv DAI, Oleksandr Pidshmarha, came out earlier this week with a new statistic showing an increase in road accidents involving municipal marshrutkas. Over the last eight months, marshrutka drivers have been found guilty of causing 68 accidents, resulting in 8 fatalities (there were only 2 in 2011) and 105 injured passengers. Part of the problem is that the drivers of these big yellow buses often speed and pay little attention to parking rules, not to mention driving under the influence – this year alone, 18 drivers were pulled over for drunk driving!

Polish President: “Make a Choice!”

Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski was in town last week, meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart. Following their meeting, Komorowsky held a press conference, where he did not mince his words. Instead, he told members of the Ukrainian press that Ukraine must decide whether it wants to align itself with the EU or join the Russian-led customs union. “It is impossible to implement those two scenarios at the same time,” he said. “A choice must be made.” He then went on to warn our illustrious leader that further EU integration depended on the transparency of the October elections and the fate of Tymoshenko. “Poland has consistently and constantly expressed the position that carrying out fair elections in Ukraine, regardless of their outcome, should open the way for further steps with the goal of signing and ratifying the association agreement between the EU and Ukraine,” Komorowski said. “The stakes are high for both Ukraine and the EU: a lot can be gained or everything could be lost.” Continuing along those lines, he rammed home the point, once again, that Tymoshenko remaining in jail could also throw the EU train off the tracks. “The case of Yulia Tymoshenko is Ukraine’s internal affair, but at the same time it is a serious and significant obstacle on the path of Ukraine getting closer to the EU.” Strong words indeed. One has to wonder how Yanukovych feels standing next to people telling him such things. And will he ever listen?

Ukraine Shocks Global Trading Partners

Last week, Ukraine sent a document marked ‘secret’ to members of the WTO, which wasn’t kept secret for very long, as it was shown to Reuters and promptly reported upon. And rightly so, as, in the document, Ukraine informed its trading partners it wants to raise its maximum tariffs on hundreds of imported goods; a move Reuters claims could unleash protectionist forces that may possibly pose a threat to the $18 trillion global trade system. In the document, Ukraine says it intends to raise the limit on tariffs it can legally impose on more than 350 goods, which, based upon figures in said document, would have hit overall imports with more than $4.6 billion in 2011. The United States said this would raise “serious concerns”, and many trade experts are worried that it might trigger increasingly protectionist policies worldwide. However, the WTO played down the move, which, while very worrying, is permissible under the agency’s rules. Global concerns aside, if implemented, it would have a serious effect on Ukrainian consumers. Cars, trucks, agricultural machinery, meat, flowers, fruit, vegetables, washing machines and even syringes are on the extensive list of goods upon which Ukraine wants to increase import tariffs. That’s going to make all these good more expensive, and give Ukrainian producers a free hand when it comes to setting prices. All of which will hit consumers hard.

Shevchenko continues to push limits even today and having signed on to Natalya Korolevska’s Ukrainian Social Democrat Party, he is also trying his hand at politics.

Siberian Airlines Flight 1812, carrying 66 passengers and 12 crew, crashes over the Black Sea – there are no survivors. Initially considered a terrorist attack (having occurred less than a month after 9-11), it is later reported that the crash is due to an errant S-200 missile fired as part of a Ukrainian Air Defence Forces exercise. The criminal investigation is ongoing.

Born and raised in New York City, Fun Lovin’ Criminals’ Frank Benbini and Brian Andrew Leiser, aka Fast, will be debuting their DJ skills in the fabulous-for-clubbing Crystal Hall. Bringing the same funky philosophy found in their music to their tunes on the turntables, these two promise a ‘dope’ night you won’t soon forget! Leaving frontman Huey Morgan at home, this is the first time Frank and Fast have been to Ukraine, and they are ready to explore the nightlife Kyiv is famous for. But let’s go back for just a moment… To give you a little background, Fun Lovin’ Criminals were founded in 1993, borrowing their name from a local graffiti crew. “FLC was one of the only multi-ethnic graffiti crews at that time,” explains Fast. “The ethnic diversity of FLC was fitting for the band’s multi-styled song-writing, hence the band name.” While they might have had a name, the trio were less than successful with gigs in those early years, and often found themselves as little more than as a replacement act at clubs that needed to fill time. In addition to these sacred images, the museum presents a selection of rare religious books published in the 17th-19th centuries – nearly 30 unique editions, most of which have never been revealed to the public. Bound in leather and decorated with gold and jewels, the pearl of the exhibit will be the Dali-illustrated, Russian-language, Ukrainian edition Bible, which first premiered in Lviv at their annual international Book Forum earlier this month. German-Italian Vincenzo Ragone is a rare house veteran, with ten years of experience under his belt. He originally worked as a producer in his native Germany, making hits that helped fuel the burgeoning Acid House subgenre in the 1990s in Hamburg. He didn’t release his first solo track until 1997, but when he did, “1-800Vincenzo” became an instant hit, garnering Vincenzo international accolades and bookings. Over the years, Vincenzo perfected his own unique brand of soulful deep house, drawing from his interest in hip-hop music and rap as a child. God Save the New Ambassador

BRITISH AMBASSADOR’S RESIDENCE A garden party is a great way to spend one of the last sunny evenings as the summer draws to a close, and this particular occasion also served as the longawaited introduction to the business community of the newly appointed British Ambassador, HE Simon Smith. The event was organised on 19 September by the BUCC, and attracted members of many nationalities. Naturally, however, the draw was strongest for the British residents of Kyiv who wanted to meet their new man. The Ambassador certainly made a big impact with the locals too, as he began his first public address here by demonstrating a remarkable command of the Ukrainian language! Welcome Mr Ambassador!

GRETER ART CENTRE French photographer of nudes and philosopher of body geometry, Eric Marriana came to Kyiv for the first time on 20 September to open his most recent-to-Ukraine, black and white project, Carre Blanc. Having already been displayed in galleries in Berlin, New York, Paris, Venice and Moscow, this is an incredibly personal take on the sometimes surprising curves of the human body. The exhibition will be on display until 18 November at Greter Art Centre – check it out.

CRYSTAL HALL Another outstanding What’s On party took place on 21 September, gathering flocks of chicks and cocks throughout the night. With The Famous Grouse literally welcoming one and all as they came through the door, guests were treated to some top live music all night long. Take our openers, Switch On the Light, for example – a super way to start the evening. Then there’s the country’s own Jay K leading up the fabulous Gouache – who didn’t totally love them? Lady in Red, Mika Newton, got intimate and personal with all those in attendance, while oldies but goodies, TNMK finished off the live music menu. With the party properly started, thanks to the help of MC Mykola Vasylkov, DJ Lutique and Alex Famous pumped it up a notch with some grooves from the turntable. Together with Golfstream, The Famous Grouse and UIA, there were some fabulous prizes that made many people pretty happy campers, including free drinks, bottles of whiskey and a return trip to either Rome or Milan! The hardcores finished at 4, were you one of them? No?! You’ll have your chance at the next one!
