What’s Up

Tymoshenko Guilty!

On Tuesday 11 October, Judge Rodion Kireyev appeared to fulfil his pre-ordained duty by announcing (to nobody’s surprise) that former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko was indeed guilty of all that she had been charged. It looks like he listened to all of the arguments presented to him by both the prosecution and defence and then did what was planned all along: deliver a guilty verdict. However, there are several arguements why there is reason to doubt whether she can truly be pronounced guilty or not. The first (and this is purely a technicality) is that Judge Kireyev may not have been correctly appointed to the court to have heard this case. As it happens, when a court position becomes vacant, that position is open to any qualified applicant who would then be interviewed by a panel of senior judges to assess his/her candidacy. When this position came up, not only was Judge Kireyev (previously residing in the Berezan district, Kyiv region, since May 2009) the only applicant, he wasn’t even interviewed for the job (strange, as the Pechersk court could be considered quite a prestigious appointment). Another technicality may be our dear President desperately searching for a way out. Appearing at the Yalta European Strategy (as reported by What’s On not that long ago), Viktor Yanukovych was quoted as saying the actual crime for which Yulia was accused had been on the statute books since the old Soviet days, and that this particular crime (abuse of office, in case you’ve forgotten) might well be decriminalised in a parliamentary session in the none too distant future. Unfortunately that session of the VR has not come in time for Tymoshenko who has just been sent off down Khreshchatyk to begin her seven year jail sentence surrounded by squads of Berkut riot police. Whether either of these technicalities may be used in the coming days to free Mrs Tymoshenko of course remains to be seen, but another possibility for freedom is that there is a 15-day period within which she can appeal the verdict. Either way, the sentence also includes a ban on Yulia being permitted to hold public office for three years. Of course, criminal convictions do not necessarily stand in the way of holding high office in this country do they Mr. President? As is well known, the President himself served two sentences in prison in his youth. His record now though is apparently clean. We may well live in a world where a politician can be charged with abuse of office for their actions whilst in power, and if that is the case can anyone think of a more glaring example for possible future examination than the Kharkiv accords seceding Sevastopil to Russia for another 25 years? Guilty Mr President? Well, not if the law has been changed by then of course! But, cutting to the crux of the matter. Who can really tell whether the deal Tymoshenko made for gas was the best deal she could get for the country or not? It was what was on the table at the time, and it was a time of acute pressure brought about by the fact that gas from Russia had been turned off, leaving Ukraine and large parts of Europe in the cold. If there is the suggestion that a private commission was collected in this case, then let that be the crime. But perhaps that would involve too many other people with whom the ruling elite is still friends. Either way, can someone conclude – beyond reasonable doubt – that Tymoshenko did indeed abuse her authority in making the deal she did? No. The problem, however, is not always in the law as it is written. The problem is in its interpretation. And if our dear Mr President is having trouble understanding the law by himself, then it’s about time somebody stepped up to help him out.

Stadium Doors Flung Wide Open Promising a grand event, Saturday 6 October witnessed the longawaited opening of the massive Olympic Stadium. Complete with an approximate 2,500 artistic participants, the evening began with a programme highlighting Ukraine’s history throughout the ages. Dancing children, fire-entertainers, balloon-carrying acrobats, a floating ship and a WWII bomber covered the pitch and had everyone’s attention. That is until a portion of the roof caught fire and continued to smoulder until some smartie noticed it and went running for a fire extinguisher. Even though it did steal the show for a few minutes, no one was hurt and the show continued. With President Yanukovych up next, someone had smartly sandwiched him in between the national anthem, sung both before and after he spoke (most likely to stifle the boos). Finishing up the concert with a 40-minute show from Shakira, the Columbian sensation followed a less modest performance by the girls of FEMEN. Our fearless feminists warmed up the audience by running around the pitch with their shirts off. Wearing nothing but a tight pair of leggings and two flowers painted on her chest, one woman had to be carried off by a couple of security guards as she shouted ‘Euro without prostitution’. No one can say Ukraine’s boring.

This Week in History Dasha Does AnastasiaDate.com

15 October 1926

Dasha Astafieva is a well-known name in Ukraine, most notably for her vocal talent in the waning-in-popularity pop-group Nikita. But that’s not all she’s known for. Featured as playmate of the month for Playboy’s 2009 January edition, the girl from Ordzhonikidze hit the world stage and is the same one responsible for stealing the heart of the old Playboy mogul. Having recently signed a contract to become spokeswoman to the world’s largest international dating community, AnastasiaDate.com, the busty brunette will soon be online with her own dating profile. “I’m excited to be a part of couples finding love and marriage,” she is quoted as saying after the announcement, and if you’re lucky, you may just be the 55th Anniversary Playmate’s next big heart throb.

Russian drama theatre is opened in Kyiv. Named after the Ukrainian writer Lesya Ukrainka, it continues to successfully operate just outside of the Teatralna Metro station today. Drop in any night of the week to catch a comedy or drama in the Russian language.

17 October 1113 Historians claim this as the date the Mykhailivsky Cathedral was finally finished. Glorifying archangel Mykhailo, it was of the biggest monasteries of ancient Kyiv. The Soviets are responsible for its dilapidation in the mid-1930s. The cathedral was rebuilt and opened once again in 1998.

Boycotting UEFA?

Ukrainian Contemporary Art Hits London Ukrainian contemporary artists are getting a lot of exposure in Europe these days, especially with what organisers are claiming is the first large-scale exhibition of Ukrainian modern artists in London. The FlaxonPtootch Salon and Gallery has turned into an island of everything Ukrainian, and is complete with traditional Ukrainian food, music and decorative items. On top of the various pieces of Ukrainian modern art on display, work-shops, discussions and concerts are also a part of the programme and give all Londoners a chance to meet Ukraine in their own hometown. Open until 9 November, the exhibition is showcasing the works of Anna Khomenko, Lesya Kara-Kotsya, Anna Sayenko, Dmytro Danylov and a number of other progressive artists from all over Ukraine. The participants will also be considered for a large art-forum which will be put in place during the 2012 Olympic Games to take place in the British capital. Way to go Ukrainian artists!

Our dear president Viktor Yanukovych has got a plan for Euro 2012. It includes making sure the world sees Ukraine as he sees it: big, beautiful and bez stray animals. The first two shouldn’t be a problem. The country is big and there are parts that are breathtakingly beautiful. It’s that third point that might prove a little more cumbersome. Hoping to somehow rid the country’s streets of stray cats and dogs, there have been reports that mobile incinerators have been deployed, animals are being burned (sometimes alive) and that some animals have even received poisonous injections which effectively paralyse respiratory muscles. UEFA has apparently called on the Ukrainian government to put an end to the animal cruelty going on in the country, but cries have fallen upon deaf ears. The situation has escalated to such a degree that there is mass talks of boycotts. Earlier this week, about 200 demonstrators turned up outside the Ukrainian Embassy in Tel Aviv dressed in black as football referees carrying whistles and red cards. Playing unfair in many respects, it’s about time the Ukrainian government get sent off.

The first private bank opens in Kyiv. Because of the colonial policy held by the Russian Empire at the time, the bank would not allow too much financial freedom. However, it did kick start the Ukrainian banking system as we know it today.

This same day in 1924 was when the first Ukrainian radio station was opened in Kharkiv. It would certainly have made those evenings in homes that could afford such technology that much more interesting. However, we have to wonder they would have been announcing at the time!

Dry Law for Kyiv? There is a new bill on the table for residents of Kyiv. If adopted, it will mean a ban on the purchase of all alcohol and tobacco products between 20.00 – 08.00. Authorities claim they are open to feedback and will take the voice of the people into consideration before any bill gets passed. They have already had a number of comments on the city administration’s official website (www.kmv.gov.ua) and many are not happy with the proposed changes. The question about whether the new law will really help with the promotion of a healthy lifestyle has been criticised first and foremost, while others predict that bootleggers will no doubt come to the rescue with home-made hooch! Whatever the outcome, there is no question that bars and restaurants will profit out of this whole set up, and some say an increase of up to 10 times what we currently pay for drinks and cigarettes should be expected. Rekindling memories of the Soviet regime, it makes you wonder just how much the government has invested in the entertainment industry.

Ukraine Today Rock’n’roll will save the world. It’s a generalised idea, but one that Druha Rika implements in all they do. Who are these guys? They’re six lads playing progressive ideas backed up with a rockin’ philosophical sound.

T

he year was 1996. It was Zhytomer. And there were five blokes who just wanted to play music. Throughout the years, the band’s music has, of course, matured. This is the reality of evolution. But there is a reason the band has gone from garage to great in its 15 years, and his name is Serhiy Gera. Leaving Skryabin to join up with the river boys in 2003, that same year the band signed on to recording label Lavina Music, debuted their first album, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Babbling Brook into Mighty River Druha Rika in Ukrainian means Second River, and they have done more than just drift into the 21st century. Playing music they actually like as opposed to that which might have made them a quick buck, these six established gents admit they had no dreams of becoming rich or famous: their only goal has been to play music honestly. “I have a degree in economics,” says Serhiy Gera, “so if making money was one of my ambitions I would have gone into business. That said, working with other groups prior to 2003, my ideology was different. Today, I’m quite happy where I am and with what we are doing.” Asking the guys what they think was the driving force behind their development, the Future of Ukraine festival is what they all answer simultaneously. They all want to share their experiences and I have to laugh a little at their enthusiasm, but drummer Oleksiy Doroshenko finally wins out: “Personally, I cried when they announced that we’d won. And I’m not even ashamed to say that! It was an important victory for all of us!” Signing on with Lavina shortly after, the band released their bold and rebellious first album I Am, and soon became a regular sound on radio stations and music channels. Their music was different from what the country was used to. But the nation seemed ready for the change, and the album’s socially-aimed lyrics flavoured with a bit of romance hit their target audience right in the bull’s eye.

The Undersong Newest member Gera says the group has always tried to put together music relevant to their everyday. Nodding his head in agreement at what the group’s keyboardist has just said, lead singer and songwriter Valeriy Kharchyshyn adds, “You can’t schedule inspiration, so we try not to plan out what we do creatively. As a result, it’s hard to tell what our future tracks will sound like. One thing we are sure of is there is sincerity found in our music. We only hope that we continue to find such like-minded people out there willing to listen.” This is something Doroshenko echoes too saying, “Even if only one person likes what we do, nothing we’ve ever done has been in vain.” People often compare Druha Rika with Depeche Mode, citing similarities in both their look and sound. The Ukrainian band declines any sort of association, but openly admit that sometimes comparison is good; especially when it’s with “the most popular electronic band the world has ever known” (as quoted by Q magazine). In fact, Gera admits that he was once a huge fan of David Gahan, saying, “I’ve met him personally. He’s just an ordinary guy who likes music just like me.” With six of them each vying for their creative juices to be individually squeezed, it’s a wonder they don’t turn out a melange of mixed up melodies and rhythms. It appears Druha Rika has come up with a way to keep everyone happy, however. It’s called democracy, and is something our members of

37.indb 6

Druh

parliament could learn from. “Everyone gets the chance to speak,” says Doroshenko: “Which is why only the very best tracks make it onto the album,” says Kharchyshyn swooping in. “But if we’re talking about compilations,” says the up-until-now silent guitarist, Oleksandr Baranovskiy, “then our gray eminence Serhiy Bilichenko [second guitarist] always gets the last word.”

From Russia to Turkey One of the things the band is quickly becoming known for is their fondness for teaming up with different groups and producing unique and innovative tracks. Experimenting first with this idea in 2008, they teamed up with Russian band Tokio where the two wrote and then sang a song in both Ukrainian and Russian. Translated loosely as Will You Get It Or Not, it was hugely popular in both countries, and has led to a similar project with another group, this time from Turkey. Turks Mor ve Otesi were representatives of their country at Eurovision 2008, and play some pretty righteous pop-rock. Getting together with Druha Rika just a few weeks back here in Kyiv, Kharchyshyn explains that this is a general project they have on the go called Rock’n’Roll Saves the World! Join us! “We want to co-write songs with bands from all over the world, and demonstrate how music unites people. Unfortunately, it is not as easy as it sounds: the more people you include the longer it takes. Our last song took about three months to finally finish, so imagine how long it would take to record a whole album!” Gera concurs: “On the one hand it’s a great opportunity to work with interesting people. But on the other it distracts you from your own music.”

Bad PR is Still PR Not unlike other groups, Druha Rika has often been the target of gossip, rumour and hearsay. Their first experience with it was back in 2003 at the Future of Ukraine festival when Kharchyshyn carelessly said the band had bought the victory as a joke. Commenting on it now, he says people didn’t understand it was meant to be a joke; especially the press who, at the time, ripped them to shreds. It’s something he still feels bad about. But as the group were able to put the money they’d won to good use. Buying instruments, the outcome wasn’t all negative. “It was the first time our bassist had a guitar with more than three strings!” That, however, wasn’t the last time they were involved in such a scandal. This summer there was news about the band breaking up all over the internet. Everyone wanted to know if it was true or not, but the group kept silent. With them here in front of me now, I can’t help but ask whether this was something they planted themselves or if they really were planning to break up. “Journalists like to exaggerate everything,” starts Gera. “We had some problems, but they weren’t enough to stop us from working together. Breaking up is easy. For us it seemed more appropriate to find the solution.” Taking the blame once again, Kharchyshyn says, “I was careless once again. I said that I was sick of everything. But it certainly wasn’t the band I was talking about. When the rumours started, we wanted to hold a press conference to refute them but we had started work with Moi ve Otesi and needed to devote all of our time to the project. And really, what could better prove that everything was okay than a rockin’ concert? So we focused on that.” Those who came to the show in Arena would have quickly seen the band looked nothing like they were on the verge of a split. If loving every minute wasn’t evidence enough, the boys also shot a video that night, and as they will soon be parting it up with the What’s On crew 11 November, you’re more than welcome to see for yourself how committed they are to each other.

Live Music

14-20 October 2011

It Won’t Hurt a Bit Hurts (UK, electro pop, new wave), Palace Sport (Sportyvna Pl 1),

20 October at 19.00 Theo Hutchcraft and Adam Anderson met in 2005 standing outside of a bar watching a bunch of guys beat the crap out of each other. Too drunk to join in, they started talking about music instead. Four years after that was when they put their group Hurts together, and with their song and first homemade video Wonderful Life, which cost a cool £20, they were on their way. With songs that do tend to have a slightly melancholic undertone, it’s interesting how these two modest chaps from Manchester can keep their audiences jamming for hours at a time. The point is that they can and will. Tickets are 250 – 700hrv. For more information call 246-7406.

Synthpop Pioneer Jean Michel Jarre (France, ambient, synthpop, electronic), Palace Sport (Sportyvna Pl 1)

14 October at 19.00 Among those revolutionaries who began creating electronic sounds far different from those produced by classic instruments, Jean Michel Jarre is a true success story. The Oxygène album from 1976 was a total breakthrough in his career, and ever since, he’s been inventing new and different sensations in sound. Coming to Kyiv for the first time this month, Ukrainian audiences should be ready for laser displays, fireworks and, best of all, true electronic music. Tickets are 250 – 1400hrv. Ukraine History

Military Mechanics The Ukrainian people have two reasons to commemorate 14 October. Not only is it the Day of the Virgin of Mercy, it is also Day of the Cossack! Because our ancient protectors of the nation were long believers in God and the Holy Mother, it is an important coincidence that these two celebrations fall on the same day. Rather than give you a boring lecture on Ukrainian history, however, we thought we might perk up your pride in some of our country’s most resourceful innovators! So without further ado, we give you the Zaporizhska Sich: Military Mechanics!

O

ne of the most important Cossack inventions was a very light and mobile boat called a chayka (translated: seagull). These military boats were an average of 20 metres long and 4 metres wide, and could transport 50-60 fully-armed Cossacks, as well as the food and water to sustain them! Sailing was accomplished either by oar or with the help of sails, and any about turns were made simply by rowing backwards. This in itself was a stroke of genius as other militaries would waste large amounts of time trying to get their own boats turned around. But perhaps the best part about this vessel was the fact that it was so light: it could easily be picked up and transported by hand. Interestingly, turning this structure upside-down and tying stones to its outer perimeter, the chayka could also be transformed into one of the first submarine prototypes! In a crucial moment, the strings could be cut and the army would unexpectedly appear from the river bottom! This first example was upgraded throughout the years into the shape of a rugby ball with a vertical tube serving as the structure’s air supply. The captain used this small hole as a way to direct the boat, while those Cossacks sitting inside rowed to his command. Another little piece of genius was the simple hollow reed. Using it the same way one would snorkel today, the reed allowed the Cossacks to move beneath the surface of the water silently. Outwitting their enemies was something the Cossacks not only enjoyed but were also very good at: no one on land ever suspected a thing! While they did enjoy besting their enemy in the water, more often than not, battles took place on land. Here, the Cossacks were continuously coming up with new ways to win. First of all, our Ukrainian hordes were among the first to use mobile artillery. The story goes like this: Cossacks were on the road with their cannonry-carrying wagons. It started to rain,

37.indb 12

and one of the wagons got stuck in the mud. Suddenly, their enemies approached en masse. There was nowhere to go. In a flash, one soldier jumped up on the wagon and started shooting. None of the adversaries ever expected this shower of bullets, and afraid for their lives, they ran and hid. The story was told to Khmelnitsky who saw merit in this new discovery. Some historians even go as far as to say the Cossacks mastered the art of horse artillery 100 years before the rest of Europe! Wagons in general, regardless of what they carried, served a hugely important role in defensive battle. Placing them in a circle with the shaft pointing out, it became an impenetrable fortress right in the middle of a

10/11/11 5:32:39 PM

13

field or steppe. Built in just minutes, this was an exclusively Ukrainian method of defence that worked both as shield, and keeping enemy cavalry from coming too close. There is speculation that Cossacks were also the first to use trenches. Working quickly with a spade, the Sich could create up to three trench lines for army and horses to hide in. So shrewd was this tactic, various armies throughout the last two centuries have continued its use. The Cossacks were also known to use something called a fire wheel. Tying rags covered in resin to the structure, it was lit and sent rolling down the hill. Enemies ran screaming, thinking it was some sort of punishment from God (so goes the story). It’s been said torpedoes were also a Cossack creation. Fashioning the base structure out of a hollowed piece of wood, gun powder was sprinkled along the length of the tube meeting with a cartridge made of metal at its end. Lighting the powder sent a charge through the tube sending the torpedo straight into enemy territory, where it went BANG! Another terrifying prototype was something called flying fire, or what we know today as a rocket. A capsule filled with pockets of gun powder was attached to either a spear or arbalest (crossbow). Lighting the capsule, it could be fired up to 200 metres away! The rocket would burst as many times as there were pockets in the cartridge. Horrified, various tales suggest their enemies thought the devil himself was on the side of the Cossacks. One last story includes a Cossack who has become quite well-known. A long time ago, in the 17th century, the Austrian capital was attacked by a fierce Turkish army. The whole city was in a panic as famine and disease overtook the area. Having run from captivity under the Turks, there was a man living in Vienna at the time by the name of Yuriy Kulchytskiy. Not just any man, he was a Cossack who during his imprisonment came to learn the Turkish language. Brave and adventure-loving, he agreed to take a letter from the bank of the Austrian-occupied Danube to the other side where a mass army of Turks were waiting. Without going into any details of the battle that ensued, it’s enough to say Vienna was liberated because of the bravery of this young Cossack. Indebted, the Austrian authorities were willing to give Kulchytskiy anything he wanted. Knowing the Turks had left behind sacks of coffee beans, a dark drink (as of yet unknown in the west) for which Kulchytskiy had acquired a taste during his incarceration, he asked that he could have them with permission to open one of the first ever coffee houses in Vienna. The bitter taste of the black coffee was not appreciated by the sophisticated European citizens, and so the Cossack experimented. Adding sugar and milk, the result was what is known today as Viennese Coffee. So now you know the Cossacks were muscled and brawny defenders of the motherland who could outwit their enemies with some of the best inventions in military history. But they also had a softer side which included a taste for elite beverages. Ukraine sure does surprise!...

Self-taught and sovereign, Phelps garners inspiration from vintage images, art and cinema which he then turns into perfectly-balanced compositions and original pieces. The common theme here is the ingenuity and quality in all his ideas. For more information call 353-1234.

Nicholas Bracegirdle (great name) is actually the guy behind the musical act Chicane. Influenced by the genius that is Jean Michel Jarre (here in Kyiv this week!), he was long convinced that music was what he wanted to do with his life, and by the time he was 12, studios and recording labels were already receiving his demos. Even though he worked with artists such as Bryan Adams, Cher, Natasha Bedingfield and Keane, it was a turbulent twenty years. Bracegirdle has stuck with it, however, and with his latest album Thousand Mile Stare dangling in front of fans, this should be a good night. Tickets 150 – 300hrv. For more information call 222-8040.

The King of Crocodile Rock Elton John (UK, pop), Palace Sport (Sportyvna Pl 1)

8 November at 19.00 Elton has a special relationship with Ukraine, not only where music is concerned but also with regards to a very special little boy he had at one time wanted to adopt.

Denied because of his age, many thought that we would never see the likes of his purple coat-tails round these parts again. While sorry might just be the hardest word, no one here is sorry he’ll be here this November, where all of his best songs will be part of the show. Tickets are 600 – 7900hrv. For more information call 246-7406.

Children and More Robert Miles (Italy, electronica), Stereo Plaza (Kikvidze 17)

11 November at 22.00 Born to Italian immigrants in Switzerland, Robert Miles enjoyed playing the piano as a young boy. Wanting to be part of the music scene as he got older, he worked as a DJ in underground Italian clubs and private radio networks way back in the early 90s. Using all his saving to buy a studio with secondhand equipment, he wrote what is known as his most famous dream trance work, Children. By 1997, more than 5,000,000 copies of the single were sold worldwide and it has since won him platinum records in many countries. Remaining under the radar since then, his latest album released in February of this year is entitled Th1rt3en and includes a mix of progressive rock with ambient and electronic soundscapes. Check it out, and then check him out next month. Tickets 150 – 300hrv. For more information call 222-8040.

Ukraine is full of artists, but Serhiy Shyshko is known as quite an important one; especially for the 20th century. Living and working during a socio-realistic predominance, he managed to incorporate the impressionist method into his own approach. Landscapes became his favourite and most significant genre, creating some masterpieces of geography in Ukraine, the Baltics, Middle Asia and Russia. Bringing the classics a little closer, take in the National Art Museum’s exhibition this autumn. For more information call 2787454.

Staged by Slovenian choreographer Edvarg Klyug to the music of Radiohead, the creators of Radio and Juliet have portrayed the old English version, Romeo & Juliet, by Shakespeare from a totally new angle. The same elements of love, devotion, betrayal and death are still the focus of this story, but the tunes are different, giving this tragic love story a new lease on life. Tickets are 80 – 500hrv. Dear Stephen, I have a problem. There’s a guy I like, and friends say he is definitely into me. He Facebook’s me every day and we chat for hours, but when we bump into each other at events, the sense of unease is so dense you could slice it. I find our online conversations easier than seeing him in person. Sometimes it seems that if I shut down my computer, I’m shutting down all aspects of my life. It feels like I’m living in a dual reality. What should I do? Sincerely, Addicted to Love (or ..... Addicted to Facebook?) Dear Addicted, Relationships are like computers. If it’s not working, at first give it a good kicking, then try switching it off then on again, and finally, when all else fails, discard it. If you like this guy, stop beating about the online bush and tell him. If he doesn’t respond, strategically end your e-communications for a period of a few days (if possible). Then, if he still hasn’t made a move, ditch him in favour of life and reality. Yours sincerely, Stephen

Scythes Farmers have been protesting outside parliament recently, using farming implements to do so. On this occasion their range extended to scythes and pitchforks. We’re waiting for the next round when they get the tractors and combine harvesters out to storm the gates.

Tights The women of Kyiv are known for their fashionable attire, and with the onset of winter weather tights are again beginning to perform a vital wardrobe function. It’s exactly the same for men and long johns.

Battle of the Bands Ukrainian rock bands are fighting for their chance to be a part of the Global Battle of the Bands this year in London, UK. As so often happens in Ukraine, there is talk of corruption surrounding the event. Good luck to those who actually have the talent to get there!

Suppressed Press Three channels critical of the government have been shut down in Kharkiv. Earlier, an independent national TV station was refused a digital license. Press freedoms are disappearing quickly, and with it any notion that Ukraine is heading in the right direction.

Bulgarian Footballers The team was in Kyiv recently for their game against Ukraine. Wellplaced sources say they acted like they were God’s gift to humanity, a dozen David Beckhams swanning round. Newsflash boys: You play for BULGARIA.

On the Sofa with... Ukraine has a few music groups that have been around longer than your oldest, most comfortable pair of underwear. TNMK is one of them, and happens to be the most popular hip-hop group to come out of Ukraine. A few years back, pianist, b-boy and TNMK veteran, Eduard Prystupa, made the decision to follow his own creative musical path. And so in 2004, he packed his stuff and was off.

posed to lyrics that deal with love and romance. To understand it, you need to listen to it. And now you can – it has just come out.

Ideas Galore Taking the group of six about a year to record and release Di.Or, the name is an off-shoot of Dilya and Orest Krysa, a marvellous multi-instrumentalist with whom Dilya had been working on an acoustic programme. It just so happens it was this programme that became the foundation for their current album which itself has an interesting story. “We opted to record everything the way John Lennon and the rest of The Beatles did with their albums – in one take.” Dilya says this has allowed them to transmit the same energy and message they would typically give out during live performances, and “is easy to record as long as you are well prepared”. Setting off on a mini-tour in support of the album, Dilya already has ideas for a next project as soon as they return. Astarta, the project’s title, is yet another step away from hip-hop, and will deal with more folky mo-

here did he go? Not too far. He’s still here in Ukraine. He’s put together a group of his own called Nedilya. Why has he chosen the Ukrainian word for Sunday, you ask? It just happens to be Prystupa’s, aka Dilya’s, favourite day of the week.

Anything But Fashion Dilya and band have just finished work on their latest album called Di.Or which they presented to a small circle of friends and fans at Divan a few weeks back. Catching the show, many of the songs are a bit of a mixture of hot social topics comically flavoured with a few show biz antics. Blown away by the music, I was equally impressed by the convo I had after the show with the lead singer. In addition to being a professional musician, composer and producer, Dilya is full of ‘green’ ideas. “I want to set a good example for the younger generation,” he said getting settled. “I think it’s im-

portant to demonstrate how essential it is that we not spoil the place in which we live.” His social message delivered, he stops for a moment and smiles. With the environment out of the way we get to chatting about what he does best: make music. These guys have been playing collectively for seven years already, which is something their music certainly demonstrates. Changing genres midstream from hip-hop to pop rock had to have been a huge adjustment for the Sunday crew, or at least for Dilya: “There’s no doubt we have grown both physically and mentally. But after releasing our third album in 2010 called Fortissimo, our music, along with our lyrics, just kind of gelled. We have found our sound and I think you can tell who we are now.” Taking a look at their latest album (which has nothing to do with fashion despite its name) as compared to the first two, it's clear their musical intentions have changed, and now gear more toward social themes of the day as op-

tifs. “I have a lot of ideas, a lot of plans. It is this aspect of music that is most important for me.” It is quite possibly for this reason Dilya enjoyed working with TNMK so much. Doing much of the writing for the trendy group of hip-hoppers at the time, he had a lot of ideas he would have loved to have implemented. Regrettably, some of them simply weren’t feasible, and so he opted to leave and go at it alone. “This was not the easiest decision I have ever had to make. But I was experimenting with music a lot back then, and much of what I was compiling just couldn’t be integrated into TNMK.” Fortunately, Eduard Prystupa was not without friends who were also musicians, and who helped him start up this next project in his musical career. “Day by day we have had less problems and more work,” says the singer, and that’s all anyone can ask for, really.
