What’s Up NAMU Staff Get Serious
The National Art Museum of Ukraine has been in the news a lot lately, and not just for the Sleeping Beauty installation, which the Russian Orthodox Church is calling slanderous. They’ve also been in the news regarding its current acting head, Tetyana Mironova. Mironova is a respected gallerist in the community. She’s been making waves recently, however, regarding a “few slanderous remarks and false claims” about the staff in a recent blog post. Requesting her immediate dismissal from the post, the museum staff are protesting in large numbers just outside of the museum building on Hrushevskoho. It’s so serious there’s a petition that’s been going around the city for the last week.
Ukraine Has a New Official Representative
Ukraine has got a new Miss Ukraine-Universe and her name is Anastasiya Chernova. Born and raised in Kharkiv, the stunning 19-year old is studying to become a teacher. She loves pets and yoga, and her favourite actor is… Can you guess? That’s right, it’s Jean-Claude Van Damm of course! ‘The muscles from Brussels’, as he’s known, made a guest appearance at the pageant. However, this is not the first time he’s been seen hanging around competitions such as this one. On the contrary, he’s an oft visitor to Ukraine, and has been frequently spotted around town at various events which boast beautiful women. But back to Anastasiya… Thebeautifulblonde will be representing Ukraine at the final to take place in Las Vegas later this year, where she hopes to “do her best”. Let’s hope she’s able to repeat if not better Ukraine’s performance from last year – Olesya Stefanko won Miss Universe runner-up, which is pretty much saying she was the second most beautiful girl in the world! Now, that’s not bad either!

People Power
250 Hryvnia A Vote
Vote buying is the sort of thing we normally expect in underdeveloped countries where potentates will use virtually any tactics, legal or otherwise, to get elected. These are not the sorts of tactics you would expect to find in a well-educated modern European country with 20 years of electoral practice under its belt. But recently, video materials have emerged of people, invariably pensioners, queuing to collect payment for their vote in elections in Russia. Does this mean that our northern neighbour has become an underdeveloped country and a haven for potentates..? I’ll leave you to draw your own conclusions. This ‘win at all costs’ mentality really does underline just how little some candidates understand about the democratic process or simply playing by the rules. It would seem that some truly believe that rules are meant to be broken. If you agree with this, then I suggest you don’t read any further. If, however, like me, you think that we should all be expected to live within a framework of rules, then read on and ask yourself how you feel about what I am about to describe. Last week, a colleague of mine whom I have known for 15 years was standing outside his apartment, when a newly polished Porsche Cayenne pulled up and out stepped a very neatly dressed man in his mid 30s. The man approached my colleague and asked him if he lived in the apartment block and if he could talk to him about the forthcoming election. They moved aside, where the young man explained that he was a candidate in the elections as a majoritarian candidate, that his allegiance was to Party of Regions and that he would like to secure my colleague’s vote. “Why should I vote for you?” asked my colleague, whereupon the candidate said if he would sign an agreement, the candidate would pay him one hundred hryvnia now and a further one hundred and fifty hryvnia after he won. What followed from my colleague is unprintable, but I am told that he engaged with the full vernacular of colloquial Ukrainian… at which point the candidate moved on. In my colleague’s block there are some 200 apartments of which he speculates only six took the black payment, but that’s still 3% of the vote. Vote buying is not only a criminal offence punishable by a prison sentence, it is also a total aberration in democratic society. If a candidate is prepared to break the law in order to win, then he should be banned from running in any election for life, as he is clearly a totally unsuitable person to be running for office. Furthermore, the style of the aforementioned candidate’s motor transport would indicate the intent of his election campaign, especially when many European MP’s go to work on the bus or by bicycle. So here’s my question: What would you have done? Would you have a) signed the contract knowing it to be an illegal act that could land you in prison? b) signed the contract accepting the first payment and then voted for somebody else, knowing that the contract could never be enforced? Or, c) practised your colloquial linguistics? Personally, I would have adopted the last version as I find the whole concept of vote buying totally repugnant – but then I am British. For those of you who chose option ‘b’, well, okay… But in accepting the bribe you would be party to a crime even though the deal could never be enforced and depriving a candidate of a hundred hryvnia at least buys you a beer or two at his expense. If you chose option ‘a’, then well done! You just sold out your conscience and your country for $30.00! I suggest you move to Russia, as you clearly have no loyalty to Ukraine. Martin Nunn
Azarov: Kyiv Hospitals Should be Better…
Well, anyone who’s ever visited one would agree, and anyone who’s ever had to reside in one would doubly agree. But what our Prime Minister and head of the Party of Regions, to finish his quote, actually said is that Kyiv hospitals should be better than average European ones. He also said, after examining the progress of the construction of a new building at the Okhmatdyt National Children’s Hospital in Kyiv, that the modernisation of the ambulance service had to be completed next year. Well,
there are a number of things we can comment about on that. Firstly, yes, Kyiv’s hospitals should be as good, if not better, than those in Europe, but they’re in such a mess at the moment that’s going to take a huge amount of money, something the country just doesn’t have. And won’t have while the Party of Regions are in power. And secondly, why just Kyiv? Is it only the capital that matters in this country? Likely, this is how much of the government thinks, because most of its members reside here. But there’s much more to Ukraine than Kyiv, and many more people residing outside the capital who also deserve good health care. So was this a rather pathetic attempt at winning last minute votes? Yes. But empty words indeed.

The Electoral Ring
We’re coming right down to the wire with elections, which means there must be at least a few sweaty palms in parliament. Will various MPs still have their seats come 29 October? Will the Party of Regions get sideswiped by UDAR? Will the United Opposition go gentle into the good night (probably not). It’s all up for grabs! In the meantime, an endless stream of political prophesising keeps it all interesting. We had an exclusive interview in the magazine last week with Vitaliy Klitschko, head of what is, at the moment, the second most popular party in Ukraine, UDAR. He was none too complimentary about the Regionnaires (but then again, who is?), nor was he was overly empathetic with the United Opposition, which current UO leader, Arseniy Yatseniuk, saw as a bit of a ‘blow’, saying he was “astonished”. Regardless of what will likely end badly for Yatseniuk, he picked himself up, dusted himself off and appeared fairly positive in an interview given in his office late last week. He mentioned he would be open to any proposals by Klitschko: “We need to move Ukraine to the EU… The door is still open.” And then promised to free Tymoshenko should his party depose of the PoR. Let the games begin!
This just in…
Tymoshenko will vote! Well, did anyone really have any doubts..?! She's been added to the list of voters at a polling station in the Kachanivska penal colony, and Bronislav Raikovsky, member of the Central Election Commission, has said, “She must vote at this polling station.” Apparently, a portable ballot box could be brought to the former PM should she remain in hospital on 28 October. However, she recently sent a letter to her archenemy, Yanukovych, asking to be moved back to prison (she’s had it with the 24-hour video surveillance), so that might not be necessary.
Ukrainian Man Makes a Fuss at 30,000 Feet
Imagine this: You’re flying at 30,000 feet. The pilot comes on and asks everyone to buckle up and prepare for landing. You heed the advice and a multitude of clicks ring throughout the aircraft. You close your eyes and in your head run through the reunion with loved ones as soon as you land. All of a sudden, you are jerked awake – the wing of the plane is on fire! You look out the window on your side of the plane – no fire. You look out the window on the other side of the plane – no fire. And yet, some nutter won’t seem to stop his screaming that this is indeed the case. So riled up is he, adjacent passengers need to restrain him. This was the scene aboard a Delta Airlines Boston-to-Salt-Lake-City flight at the beginning of last week, where, as soon as the plane hit the tarmac, 46-year-old Ukrainian Anatoliy Baranovich was accused of damaging and disabling an aircraft, interfering with the crew and immediately taken into custody. According to a criminal complaint, the man had been in Ukraine and was suffering the effects of a 50-day drinking binge. Searching the man’s luggage, officials found 19 passports! Sixteen of the passports were for women between the ages of 20 to early 30s, and three were for men. Apparently, they seem to have been issued to people who live or have been to the US. Currently, the FBI are trying to determine the whereabouts of the people to whom the passports belong. In the meantime, testimony was given during a court hearing on Friday of last week against Baranovich, which alleged that the Ukrainian twice attempted to bribe officers to release him. Prosecutors too claimed the man as a “flight risk” and a “danger to the community”, forcing the presiding judge to rule the man remain in custody. Melodie Rydalch, spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office, said, “There is obviously a lot more we need to know about the passports and what is going on there.” Well no kidding.

Mykola Tereshchenko – one of Ukraine’s greatest entrepreneurs and benefactors – is born. Having prospered in the sugar industry around the end of the 19th century, he donates money for the construction of orphanages, schools, hospitals, etc. He is also famous for his interest in art, or more specifically the collection he, his brothers, his sons and his sonin-law Bohdan Khanenko, amass. This collection is now found in various museums such as Kyiv Museum of Russian Art, the National Art Museum of Ukraine and the Khanenko Art Museum.

HSBC: Hryvnia to Drop 10% by Year-end 28 October 1989 Most people have been speculating on a drop in the hryvnia since the date for the elections was set, with most street pundits guessing the government would keep propping up the currency until after the vote had taken place, and then let it slide. That view has now been backed by HSBC’s chief economist for Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan, Alexander Morozov, in an emailed report, according to Bloomberg. “The sooner the devaluation of the hryvnia occurs, the better for the external balance, the economy and the markets,” Morozov is quoted as saying. And he reckons it will hit nine to the dollar before the end of the year. He went on to explain that the currency will remain under pressure because the global demand for steel, Ukraine’s main export, is unlikely to recover soon. Because of this, Morozov estimates the local currency will weaken to 11 hryvnias per dollar by the end of 2013! Well, that’s the opinion of a man who should know what he’s talking about. But then again, chief economists in banks have recently been proven to have as much of a clue on such subjects as our beloved street pundits, so who knows.

This particular group is made up of bassist Billy Sheehan (Talas, Mr Big, Niacin), guitarist Tony Macalpine (popular for his multiple solo projects) keyboardist Derek Sherinian (Dream Theatre, Billy Idol, Alice Cooper) and of course, drummer Portnoy (Dream Theatre, Transatlantic, Neal Morse). Master of the Remix
Sebastien Leger (France, techno), Mantra (V Vasylkivska 5)
26 October at 22.00
Leger has created remixes for a long list of global artists, including Justin Timberlake, Armand Van Helden, Eric Prydz, Dannii Minogue, Kevin Saunderson, Depeche Mode, and The Chemical Brothers, but that’s not his only claim to fame. Inspired by the tenets of the Chicago and Detroit techno-house scenes, this French DJ has fast become a ‘house’-hold name in his own right, with many successful albums and singles under his belt. He started a record company called Mistakes, and he describes it as “the only record company that is not really techno.” He also prefers to make singles instead of records, making his sets an enjoyable grab bag of remixes and songs that skip across the genre spectrum. For tickets and more information call 336-2848.

Exhibition of paintings by Serhiy Zhyvotkov, National Art Museum of Ukraine (Hrushevskoho 6)
From 25 October
Serhiy Zhyvotkov is one of the most important artists in modern Ukrainian art, and commemorating the 50th anniversary of his birth, NAMU has put together a little exhibition of his works. As a member of the unruly 80s generation, he actively rebelled against socialist realism – a form of art which developed to further the ideals of socialism. Working predominantly in monochrome, his works challenge the powers that be and reflect the achievements of talented Ukrainian avant-garde artists of the early 20th century. His minimalist artistic language creates such a strong emotional effect – you’ll have a hard time resisting the aesthetics of Zhyvotkov’s world. For more information call 278-7454

Charmed by his genius, you have the opportunity to find out more about this fascinating artist here in Kyiv, in the form of an excursion. Visiting those places with which he is connected, such as Oleksandrivsky Cathedral where he was baptised, or the National Art Academy where he taught, this is one walking tour you don’t want to miss. Bach and Breakdance Together
Red Bull Flying Bach with The Flying Steps (Germany, dance, classical), National Opera Theatre (Volodymyrska 50)
26 – 27 October at 19.00
We’re pretty sure Bach never did any breakdance, but that doesn’t mean his 21st century fans can’t combine the two. This next performance at the National Opera Theatre will surely be unlike anything you ever seen in a theatre so regal. What it does, however, is prove that high classical culture can and does go perfectly well with modern urban aesthetics. Brought to life by Germany’s most popular breakdance team – The Flying Steps, these guys are taking their show on the road, and after Kyiv are headed to Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Don’t miss it! Tickets are 100 – 500hrv. For more information call 279-1169. : What's On Recommended

Japanese Popstars (UK, electronic), Xlib (Frunze 12)
17 November at 23.00
The Japanese Popstars may not be Japanese, but they are popstars, and they have plenty of Japanese fans these days. They’re often compared to electronic music titans like the Chemical Brothers and Orbital, and their latest offering Controlling Your Allegiance was a nominee for the Irish Album of the Year Award. Their brand-spanking new single Matter of Time is already climbing the charts. That’s a long way from the trio’s humble beginnings, recording on cheap lo-fi equipment in a bedroom in Northern Ireland. The group’s fun, infectious beats and catchy vocals make for an instant dance party. Have you got your tickets yet? Admission is 120hrv. For more information call 063-730-8353.

Bringing these and other tracks with him on his Ukrainian journey, he’s promising everyone a “piece of his soul”. Tickets are 200 – 1,500hrv. For more information call 247−2444.

House as Art
The Best of Keiko, Palace Ukraine (V Vasylkivska 103)
House in a House project by Solmaz Fouladi – installation, performance art, M-17 (Antonovycha 102-104)
Keiko Matsui is one of the world’s most interesting modern musicians, whose music both reaches and touches a large audience. Part of that audience can be found here in Ukraine, with fans scattered across the country. As a regular guest to Kyiv, Matsui brings her best to the capital this spring; compositions that incorporate many genres such as jazz, instrumental, new age, classical and meditative. “I feel like my role on this earth is to make peace through music,” Keiko told us in a previous interview with What’s On. How can you argue with that? Tickets are 190 – 990hrv. For more information call 247-2316.
Persian designer and architect Solmaz Fouladi has called Kyiv home for more than 15 years. Creating a new style in design, called Persian Modern, she has put together a project the likes of which you’ve never seen – a house within a house. M-17 invites those interested to come inside the very house Fouladi has built; a mobile innovative space, with creative lighting and furniture fashioned out of light concrete. It’s a five-day event which incorporates various pieces of performance art as well – come along! For more information 596-2030.

According to the Frankfurt-based artist, the first 20 years of our lives are the time when objects matter most. If you are interested in the psychology of consumerism, be sure to check out the exhibition before it closes on 29 October.

s I sat at my desk this week, struggling to find a topic for this week’s provocation, I was staring off into space to the left of me where our lovely Alina and illustrious Katya sit facing each other, their desks back-to-back. As I was staring into space they were on the periphery of my vision and I was only very mildly aware of them at all. But all of a sudden they caught my attention and I knew I had what I was looking for – a topic for this week. As I watched, they were in the middle of a hushed but animated conversation, huddled down on the far side of their computer screens as if that would hide from me the fact they were gossiping like fishwives rather than working. Nothing unusual in that. Nor is there anything unusual in the fact that one is speaking Russian and one is speaking Ukrainian and both understand each other perfectly. What struck me as I watched them gabble away (so involved in the conversation that they remained completely unaware they were being observed) was that Alina is from Luhansk and considers herself Russian (ethnically at least) while Katya, while having been born in Kyiv herself, originates from a place a little west of here and is fervently patriotic. I watched with increasing amusement (especially when bursts of loud giggling interrupted their rapid flow of words, making even more ludicrous the fact that it appeared they
were still attempting to hide themselves by huddling behind their computer screens) and a strengthening warm feeling inside. Firm friends are these two girls who hail from opposite ends of the country, who clearly enjoy each other’s company and conversation very much. There is nothing that separates or divides them, despite the fact they’re having one conversation using two different languages. Now, that’s not exactly earth shattering news either, but it serves once again to remind us that many of the divides we consider exist in the world are created by the politicians and the press, and exist only in our imagination. People are people, and more often than not, put them together and they’ll get along just fine. Language has been getting a lot of press over the past few months due to the legislation the government introduced giving Russian official language status in Ukraine, and whether you think that’s right or wrong, the truth is the people will get on with it regardless. With the elections looming, many are worried what the result might be and how it will affect the future of Ukraine, but when I look at Alina and Katya I know Ukraine will survive and thrive. It always does, despite the best endeavours of the idiots running it.

Dear Larry, As an expert of male psychology and mentality, can you tell me why men never plan vacations in advance and get so furious the moment a woman starts a conversation about the approaching holidays? Is it about men’s spontaneous nature or because they are simply so lazy that they don’t want to plan or decide anything? Thanks! Ordinary Ukrainian Woman Dear Ordinary Ukrainian Woman, Honestly, there’s something soul-crushing about making plans so many months in advance when you could be swilling beer, watching football, or eating an enormous steak. Why bother planning a perfect holiday when you can fart around until the last minute and have a vacation that’s only half as good? Cheers, Larry, Who Accidentally Stayed at a Brothel for Lepers after Forgetting to Book a Hotel on His Most Recent Holiday
