What’s Up

FEMEN Go International! Yes, those lovely Ukrainian ladies who love to strip in order to bring attention to feminist issues have taken their unique form of protesting abroad. And it seems they're causing quite a stir. Most humourously, one of their gang did her thing at the Vatican. While already dressed in what most would call inappropriate attire for a visit to this most holy of places (tight jeans and a see-through top), the tall blonde managed to sneak past security and promptly take her top off in front of St Peter’s Basilica not long after the Pope’s Sunday Angelus. Drawing more attention to herself by screaming chants against the Pope who’s been accused of holding intolerant views on women's rights, the young heroine was quickly surrounded by police. A hilarious Youtube video shows the police gently trying to keep her covered and escort her away with whispers of “signorina” while the young girl screamed as if they were beating her to death. Just the day before, the naked activists took part in a mass protest against Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlasconi with their breasts

A Game of Cat and Mouse

Russia wants in on the World Trade Organisation. Ukraine wants cheaper gas. The US wants Russia to join the Information Technology Agreement. To that end, there’s a little game of cat and mouse going on between all three countries. The problem is, the distinction as to who is playing what role varies often, and while somebody may be playing cat today, there’s no reason why they might not be mouse tomorrow. So this is the deal. Russia and Georgia are in talks at the WTO negotiations at the moment. They think they’ve reached a compromise. Ukraine says we’re going to veto

painted the colours of the Italian flag. You have to admire their target selection as the 75-year-old, a self-confessed womaniser, is currently battling allegations of teenage prostitution. A man his age should really know better! From our point of view, however, their best gag was the one that kicked off this mini European tour when they dressed themselves as hotel maids and protested outside the home of disgraced former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn in Paris. Complete with buckets and mops, they stood outside his residence, making it quite clear how they felt about his innocence. Holding banners that declared, “f**k me in a Porsche Cayenne” (referring to another accusation against the man), they shouted up at him: “Come down if you are a man!” Of course, he did not. We wonder what the French and the Italians are thinking of this unique brand of feminism, or if FEMEN's antics will gain support outside of Europe. They certainly seem to be getting a lot of press attention!

unless we get cheaper gas and free access into the Russian market. At this point, the US thinks this is a good opportunity to ante up and says Russia must join the ITA before they’re allowed to access the WTO. Regardless of the current price Ukraine is paying for gas ($414/1000m3 compared to the $320 - $360/1000m3 other European

countries are paying) Russia’s not fond of the blackmail. They also think there could be issues next month when Ukraine goes after the same membership they’re trying to acquire now. Nor is Russia happy with the US. Much of it has to do with them not wanting to sign the ITA agreement providing for zero duties on all high-tech products. But even more so because Russia claims the US is up to their old tricks again – pretending to agree and then backtracking. Whatever happens, Russia is in a pickle. Will they forfeit high gas prices from Ukraine for their WTO membership? Or will they behave the way they normally do whenever they are asked to do something they quite possibly know is right, but really don’t want to? We bet we know the answer!

Hurling Women Out of Your Hotel Room: Bad

A Ukrainian woman may find it hard to move for the next couple of days after having been flung 20 feet from a hotel window in the UAE and landing on a car late last week. The dazed, confused and bruised woman staggered into reception whereupon salesman Zoubair Ali, 37, was arrested from his private first floor suite. Having argued over her £85 fee, the Ukrainian woman, whose name has been withheld, said the British Ali became enraged when she refused to take their sexual encounter any further. This was the point he threw her out of the window. Not out of his life, however, as he's been charged with assault and unmarried sex (a major offense in the Emirates). We're thinking a mere 85 quid doesn't seem like so much now.

This Week in History Ukrainian Girls: Beware! A City of All Sorts

There were clashes in Kyiv on Monday as hundreds of Communist supporters marched down the capital’s main street of Khreshchatyk in commemoration of the 94th anniversary of the October Revolution. Carrying red flags and banners which read “Long Live the Communist Party”, they made a proper racket. Their enthusiasm was curtailed by a number of activists/nationalists, mainly from the Svoboda party, who tried unsuccessfully to stop the marchers. Once they realised physicality was going to get them nowhere, however, they pulled the stops. Or rather the eggs, which they began chucking making a proper mess. Interestingly, the cops did nothing until the appearance of the oval projectiles at which point only three people were arrested.

A man charged with the killing and dismemberment of a Ukrainian call-girl was found guilty earlier this week. Alla Mefodova disappeared in Mijas in April of last year, with only her hands recovered by the police. Apparently, the man confessed that he had enlisted the services of Bianca (the name Mefodova gave him) whom he brought back to his house. At which point he drank a bottle of whiskey, shooted some coke and then fell asleep. When he awoke, the woman was dead. He says he went into shock, burnt her clothes, bought a chain saw, cut up her body, which he then put into bags and dumped into garbage containers. The waiter from Castilla la Mancha has had no previous criminal record and has never been accused of criminal behaviour. While drastic stories like these are few and far between, women in general seem to be more and more at risk. Ladies, Ukrainian and foreigners alike, please be careful!

Another Four Charges Against Tymoshenko?

It would appear that not only are complaints from the EU over the political persecution of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko going unheard by Yanukovych, but he is thumbing his nose at the whole continent. Not only did he throw Tymoshenko in jail and then have a murder case re-opened, he’s now had the tax police (a gang he seems to be making good use of recently) reopen another four criminal investigations against her. Her lawyer, Serhiy Vlasenko told reporters that the State Tax Service informed Tymoshenko of their decision on 4 November. All four cases relate to alleged tax evasion in the late 1990s when Tymoshenko was head of the United Energy Systems of Ukraine, then the main importer of Russian gas. All of us who were hoping Yanukovych was playing a good game of chess now have to assume, sadly, we were wrong.

Ukraine – A Drain Collector For Russian Pop-Crap

Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada passed a law recently stating the quota for Ukrainian product placement on radio and television has been reduced to 25%. The previous allocation of national versus foreign audio/visual material was a required 50%. But with this new law, introduced by Party of Regions Olena Bondarenko, fans of Ukrainian radio and television will have the opportunity to acquaint themselves with ‘high quality products’ more than they ever have before. In total contradiction to Bondarenko’s op-

timism, the Tymoshenko Bloc and Nasha Ukraina parties have already sent an official objection to the president in the hopes they might be able to ban the law. Arguing

The Tchaikovsky Conservatory opens in Kyiv replete with a visit from Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky himself. The first teacher at this distinguished institution was the famous Reinhold Glière.

14 November 1944

The State Museum of Ukrainian Art, now known as the National Art Museum, opens. Designed by the Ukrainian architect Vladislav Horodetsky, it is one of the oldest museums in Ukraine and posses a fabulous collection of Ukrainian masterpieces.

12 November 1992

Ukraine begins using a new currency – the kupono-karbovanets. It was meant to serve as a four – six month transitional currency after the collapse of the Soviet Union while the National Ukrainian Bank found its footing. The last karbovantsi, however, was used in 1996, growing into millions with the spin of inflation.

17 November 2004

Students of several Kyiv universities (those from the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy taking the most active role) strike in opposition to the oppression of the freedom of thought they faced at the end of the first round of presidential elections. It was this strike that grew into the famous Ukrainian Orange Revolution the country is so famous for.

these new regulations will have a devastating effect on Ukrainian entertainment, Tymoshenko proponent Andriy Shevchenko says our Russian colleagues will take no time in taking advantage of the situation. Ukrainian media is already suffering from the dominance of low-quality Russian-produced TV serials and pop-culture. To make matters worse, however, experts say the consequences of this new ruling will most certainly unveil themselves in some sort of ideological war (likely with a little bit of brainwashing in the process).

Kyiv Kino The Brits are back this month with a whole week of English-language movies for English-speakers and movie buffs alike. Whilst there will only be five flicks showing this time round, if you plan your week properly, you’ll be able to catch them all!!

The Brits Invade B

efore we set you loose on the few but fabulous features the week of 10 – 16 November has in store, we’ve got a special treat: Director of Perfect Sense (one of the films on show this week) David MacKenzie. To the chagrin of the entire city, he won’t be making any special appearances. What he did agree to, however, was an exclusive chitchat with the What’s On crew. Sounding an awful lot like the British Colin Firth, with a humour all his own, it was almost is if we had the Scottish director in our own front room sipping tea and eating chocolate biscuits… You’re from Scotland originally, where do you call home now? Glasgow. But you sound so English! Well, yes, thank you very much (laughs). I have to say I spent most of my life trying to explain this. My father was a Navy man and so I had a childhood that had a little bit of English in there. What first got you into the film industry? I went to a school that used to play very interesting movies when I was 13, 14. Most of the movies were ones that scared me. But they kind of imprinted themselves on me too. There was a Nicolas Roeg movie called Don’t Look Now, a Roman Polanski movie called The Tenant, and this extreme kind of movie about a nuclear attack. It was a documentary that was banned in the UK but for some reason they snuck it into the school and only people over the age of 16 were allowed to go. I managed to creep in through the back door and I rather wish I hadn’t because it sort of burnt the images on my brain. I guess those were kind of formative things.

You have done quite a bit in shorts. And when I say that of course I mean short–length films. Would a director choose to start working in shorts because it’s less daunting or is there another reason? It’s not really that. All of my shorts were far too long and they all wanted to be feature films. It was more that I couldn’t find the money to make them into larger movies. There was a time in the 90s when I was making short films back to back and it was kind of obvious that I was just going to take that step up. There’s one feature-length in particular called Young Adam that finally made it into the right hands. It took ten years but it finally got there. And it was all worth it in the end. You do a lot of your own writing. Tell us about that. Yes it’s about 50/50. I think it’s crazy to go into a film and not understand the script. You have to lift up every stone as to the meaning behind a script and the best way to do that is to work with the writer or else write it yourself. But even then, the script is only a map. And in fact I usually get to a point where I don’t need the script by the time I’m shooting. Apart from the joyous pleasure of ripping out the pages I’ve just shot, which is a sort of ritual I have. Do you have a favourite of the films you’ve done? It’s hard to say. It tends to be the projects that you are most distant from because you don’t remember all the hardship or the painful bits. I think one of them has to be Young Adam because it took so long to get off the ground and was a bit of a passion project. But the one I made most recently called You Instead was a very liberating process and one that revitalised my interest in cinema in lots of ways. And Perfect Sense, of course, I think is a very special movie. Do you have a favourite genre that you like to work in? Actually, I think in a way American–led cinema has been kind of destroyed by the whole notion of genre: they are so genre-obsessed. I hope to kind of inhabit the cracks between genres. I guess in Perfect Sense I’m incorporating a romance but also something a little more gritty than sci-fi, and then playing with a little bit of poetic cinema games as well.

41.indb 6

Do you pay attention to what other directors are doing? I tend to go through periods were I’m really independent and then get really insanely jealous and realise how useless I am. But it goes in waves. Actually when I’m in the middle of things I tend not to like watching too many other things because it tends to skew you and it can undermine your self-confidence.

Receiving numerous invitations to perform the world over, the choir’s repertoire is something to behold: moving historic ballads; Eastern European folk songs; hymns that speak of the tragic civil war on Kazan territory; as well as anthems that promote the rich and unique folk culture that was the Cossack army. The Great Return

The Orchestra (formerly ELO, UK, 70s rock), Palace Ukraine (V Vasylkivska 103)

14 November at 19.00

In 2009, former band members of the Electric Light Orchestra – drummer Bev Bevan, bassist Kelly Groucutt, conductor Louis Clark and violinist Mik Kaminski – got together to bring the foregone fame back. Just a year later, Bevan opted to leave the band, selling the name rights to ELO’s first lead singer. It left the current group in the lurch. But with a history that dates back to the 70s when music was pure and rock’n’roll was revolutionary, the band along with their new name The Orchestra can’t really complain. Tickets are 20 – 1150hrv. Swan Lake Star

Anastasiya Volochkova solo project, I Franko Ukrainian Drama Theatre (Ivana Franka 3)

25 November at 19.00

Anastasiya Volochkova is a Russian ballerina famous for her beautiful feet, graceful hands and over-sized (for a dancer) body. Beginning her career as a principal dancer at the St. Petersburg Mariinsky Theatre, she quickly became the Bolshoi’s Swan Princess, handing her fame on a platter. Her scandalous dismissal only added to her fame, and since then she has been working on personal projects uniting ballet and gymnastics into one performance. Bringing her new ballet coupled with a few world famous opera stars, Anastasiya promises a night you won’t soon forget. Tickets are 150 – 1200hrv. For more information call 279-5921.

A Hungarian Rainbow

Hungarian Gypsy Symphony Orchestra (Hungary, ethnic), Palace Ukraine (V Vasylkivska 103)

A Light in the Dark Lumen (Russia, alternative rock), Bingo Club (Pr Peremohy 112)

The M17 gallery is presenting a project called No Art, and allows for the manifestation of each and every person to become an artist in front of a blank canvas. The gallery warns, however, that you should not expect an exhibition of white walls. Instead, works by Vitaliy and Olena Vasylyeva, a couple who got started in Kharkiv and have often met with postSoviet prejudices, will keep you guessing. For more information call 5962030.

Life Energy 3 – Student’s Day Global Dance Festival, Stereo Plaza (Kikvidze 17)

International Student’s Day is causing an uprising in the capital. A number of clubs have picked up on it. However, only one is going to be able to offer this kind of line-up. Check this out: New York raised and Switzerland-based DJ/producer of techno and trance Sean Tyas;

As part of their Stay True to Yourself European tour, Lumen will be taking time to visit the capital of Ukraine where they have a number of wild and foolish fans. Shedding light on the lives of ordinary people by means of their own prism of musical truth, they evoke feelings of strength and ability aimed at fighting to make the lives of their listeners that much better. Tickets are 150 – 200hrv. For more information call 424-2555.

17 February at 19.00

The Hungarian Gypsy Symphony Orchestra is possibly the most renowned gypsy orchestra the world has ever come across; the story of its creation just as wonderful as its music. Sandor Jaroka, one of the more famous gypsy musicians, died in 1985 with performers from all over Hungary attending his funeral. Inspired by the master, they began to play, and so an orchestra was born right then and there. What you can expect tonight is much of the same: ethnically eclectic folk melodies full of passion and emotion. Be there! Tickets are 120 – 1500hrv. For more information call 247-2316.

This is a great honour for the Ukrainian capital, and one you shouldn’t pass up. Tickets are 450 – 5000hrv. For more information call 246-7406.

A Line-up of Gods

Godskitchen International Exhibition Centre (Brovarskiy Pr 15)

5 December at 20.00

Getting their feet wet three years ago, Godskitchen has become fully immersed in notoriety and is quite possibly the most well-attended indoor festival Ukraine hosts. As a massive audio-visual show known throughout the considerable clubbing world, these events affirm the notion that light can indeed be seen and music heard. Making the lineup this year, headliners Sander van Doorn and Gareth Emery will be transferring their own kind of mantra. Then prepare to be transfixed by the sounds of Richard Durand, Simon Patterson, Sied van Riel and eight other equally-capable music-makers. Transporting you into the future with incredibly advanced digital technology, this festival has been given the name Fusion for a reason. Tickets are 299 – 449hrv. For more information call 067-247-7767.

Boombox will bring fans together this evening for the purpose of presenting their new album Seredniy Vik (Middle Age). Enthusiasts have had to wait a year for this one. But considering it’s only their fourth official LP, you can understand their impatience! While Ukrainian bands do tend to fade in popularity the longer they hang around, the opposite can be said for these guys. Check out what middle age looks like for this music machine tonight. Tickets are 150 – 1000hrv. For more information call 222-8040.

Perhaps his secret has to do with his love songs, the words from which have no doubt kept him young and vibrant. Writing too is a passion of this crooner, which can be found on albums by famous singers Joe Dassin and Dalida. Take in his concert this November, he’ll make sure it’s one you won’t soon forget! Tickets are 200 – 1550hrv. For more information call 247−2444.

Combining modern flamenco, ballet and circus acrobatics, their show is nothing short of fabulous! Kyiv Life Story of the World in Photographs

Man of the hour, Bill Phelps

BRUCIE COLLECTIONS Well-known American artist Bill Phelps was in Kyiv on 27 October to open an exhibition of selftitled photographic works. Having been published in Italian Vogue, French Marie Claire and The New York Times, his photos have now been captured upon the cameras of those here in Kyiv and will no doubt have been met with equal acclaim. Here until 5 December, this particular exhibition is well worth your time – it is a marvellous example of genius on film.

Turkish Independence

HYATT On 28 October, the Turkish Embassy invited the city out to the celebration of the country’s 88th birthday and the unfortunate departure of Ambassador of Turkey HE Ahmet Bulent Meric. Even though Ukraine and Turkey have suffered a difficult past, often at the hands of one another, relations between the two continue to gather momentum with many opportunities for cooperation ongoing. This of course was one of the biggest reasons so many gathered this evening. The other was to say good-bye to an ambassador who will be well missed.

On the Sofa with... Selling his works at European auction with price tags in the realm of $20 – 30,000, Oleh Tistol must certainly be among the most successful Ukrainian artists of the last few years. To add to the list of accolades, his first personal exhibition in London, called Mythology of Happiness, opened just last week. Featuring 40 works, Saatchi Online Magazine has already called it one of London’s best exhibitions for November 2011. Theoretically getting him on the sofa, we talk to Oleh Tistol straight from the British capital!

A Man in Search of Paradise A

s one of the country’s currently most significant contemporary artists, serious conceptual ideas find artistic yet original embodiment in the works of Oleh Tistol. With an affinity for print design and an aptitude for paint, his artistic language incorporates both, which he then turns into unemotional but suspenseful works full of both self-reflection and indifference.

Breaking Through Social Boundaries

Getting Tistol on the phone the night after the big opening, he seems anxious, unsettled, excited. “I have had several projects and exhibitions in European museums, my works have been showcased at biennales, and auctions have proved very successful in recent years. But what is really wonderful about this exhibition is I feel as though the London audience understood me. We may speak different languages, but we understand each other. It’s a response I have been waiting for for the last 20 years!” Appearing on the artistic scene in 1989, Tistol’s days were spent painting in a collective whose works first appeared in a Moscow museum. The group was called the South-Russian Wave. Here in Ukraine, that same group who dared to break through the social boundaries of realism were called The New Wave, and comprised artists Tistol, Tsagolov, Hnylytsky, Holosiy, Savadov and more. Moving on from Russia to exhibit in Poland, the Netherlands, Norway and Italy in the early 90s, he has since gained the respect of his colleagues as well as the European community. Looking back at those earlier years, Tistol feels as though he worked hard for Ukraine. “Contemporary Ukrainian art is where it is today – which includes the European framework – because of those artists who have toiled over the last two decades. Twenty years ago, exhibitions in Kyiv were shameful and horrible!”

Successors of the Great European Masters

Speaking about the great leap Ukraine has taken in terms of contemporary art reminds Tistol of another interesting phenomenon – the overcommercialisation of art. “There’s something I’ve noticed lately when it comes to the openings of exhibitions in our Ukrainian capital: people talk a lot about how much a work costs and how to sell it. Ten years ago, people spoke to the sense of life as they looked at a piece of art. Today they think of how to price it. I know there was a period of time when the country didn’t even know of the term 'art-market', let alone that that it had one. Even so, art which provokes discussions about money costs nothing. Art is about love.” Not totally jaded, Tistol points to the generation of Ukrainian youth that grew up with The New Wave of artists, saying they know what to look for and can distinguish true art from imitation. “Their ability to recognise a quality piece of work comes from knowing how hard life is without culture or information. But they also know what European means, and that’s important.” Taking pleasure in working with signs and symbols, Oleh Tistol loves playing with the significance the world attributes them, and in that trying to prove his artistic language is in fact universal. “My generation was very well educated in art history, so it’s very common to envisage ourselves as the successors of great European masters. In fact, it’s very normal for me to have inner dialogues with Velazquez, Cezanne, Picasso. That said, an artist can only work with something that truly concerns and interests him. I have never gone looking for my own style. I am what I am.” Staying true to himself and no one else, Tistol has taken the palm tree on in the last few years as something that speaks to his soul. If you know his work, you’ll know about ‘Tistol’s Palms about which he says, “I’m interested in the way each human being searches for paradise here on earth. These mortal attempts I find very naïve and primitive: there is no paradise on Earth. And yet we all keep trying to find it, myself included!”
