Sin embargo, este año 2022 nos hace ser optimistas. todavía podemos unirnos como comunidad y celebrar lo que hace que nuestra cultura sea tan magnífica: la gente creativa. ellos han moldeado nuestro mundo de muchas maneras diferentes, algunos aportando contribuciones muy valiosas mientras que otros dejan su huella de maneras menos beneficiosas. estas personas tienen la capacidad de inspirar a otros para que trabajen mas, logren mas o simplemente vivan una vida mejor.

OUKA LEELE

BARBARA ALLENDE GIL DE BIEDMA (1957-2022), conocida como Ouka Leele, fue la figura mas mística en la Movida madrileña de los años 80. Desde muy joven, adquirió reputación internacional.

Con una creatividad arrolladora, consiguió dotar a sus creaciones de una atmósfera particular, entre sueño y realidad. Tenía alma de Supoeta.obra tiene un intenso sabor a Surrealismo y un dulce aroma a poesía intimista. Como los artistas del Renacimiento, Ouka Leele tocaba todos los palos. Con una sensibilidad casi enfermiza, fue multidisciplinar: además de fotógrafa de éxito, fue pintora, escritora y poeta.

FAMILIA DE CASTA ARTISTA Bárbara Allende nació en Bilbao (1957), hija del arquitecto Gabriel Allende Maíz, sobrina del poeta Jaime Gil de Biedma y de Tomás Allende García-Baxter, ministro franquista y destacado tecnócrata del Opus Dei. Su primera inspiración fue su abuelo, fotógrafo y pintor amateur. Su hermana Patricia también fue fotógrafa. “Fui a un colegio de religiosas. El olor a incienso, los velos de tul y las ceremonias monjiles me fascinaban. Era como estar continuamente en el teatro”. Luego fue a Montealto, colegio del Opus Dei. Durante su infancia le fascinó una especie de misticismo, rozando el ascetismo. Fue lo que cultivó al crecer, cuando se convirtió en artista clave del movimiento mas conocido de Madrid. Aunque creció lo justo, porque siempre conservó una especie de rebeldía e inocencia que le hacían vivir como levitando.

Ouka Leele, pintó sus fotografías de poesía y color. Premio Photo España 2022, a título póstumo. Rendimos homenaje a una gran fotógrafa, pintora, escritora y poeta.

Ouka Leele me transporta al libro “El Principito” de Saint-Exupéry. Esta eterna niña, escogió su nombre artístico tomándolo de palabras inventadas para una estrella inexistente. Las escribió su pareja, el pintor El Hortelano en una pintura-mapa irreal. Ella lo adoptó porque no quería ser reconocida y dejó de firmar “Barbara sin apellido”. Su obsesión era esconderse de la Hafama.muerto este año, demasiado joven. Hoy, su espíritu descansa en el cielo, rodeada de otras estrellas con nombres reales. El mundo del arte llora la ausencia de esta artista que creó su propio lenguaje personal, sembrado de locura y colorido fluorescente que plasmaba en sus fotos en blanco y negro, sobre las que pintaba los colores más vivos.

OUKALELE

Hacía performances rarísimas: proyectaba fotos desde detrás de un búnker con personas desfilando con miembros de cerdo y lanzaban patas de pollo al público, mientras alguien leía la guía de teléfonos. Le gustaba jugar con en el público, creando una mezcla de enigma, horror y absurdo. En Barcelona, con la pobreza como escuela, comenzó a ser una gran creadora de sueños.

AMIGOS DE LA MOVIDA Inclinada hacia la pintura, empezó Bellas Artes en Madrid, aunque abandonó la carrera para iniciar sus estudios de piano. Al mismo tiempo asistía a clases en Photocentro para aprender fotografía. Tras publicar sus primeros trabajos en un libro llamado “Principio”, comenzó a exponer en 1978. Sus fotos eran en blanco y negro, pues odiaba la de color. Cuando le encargaron una imagen para portada de revista, inventó poner su propio color. Fue entonces cuando empezó a colorear sus instantáneas. “Solo eres tú misma cuando tienes pocos años. Hasta los 4 años, todos te quieren, te dejan vivir. Desde los 5 a los 12, todo cambia, haces lo que ellos quieren. Y ahora ya no sabes lo que quieres realmente. Vas a una fiesta y todos están de pie con su copa y quizá lo que te apetece es sentarte en el suelo”. Desde su juventud Barbara residió en Barcelona, Madrid y Nueva York. La pintura fue su primera vocación, trasteando en el estudio de su Enabuelo.Barcelona, Ouka Leele revelaba las fotos con guantes porque no podía pagar la calefacción, pedía dinero y a veces comía gracias a la secta Hare Krishna que repartía comida gratuita. Su primer mecenas fue el galerista catalán Albert Guspi. Le animó a buscar un nombre artístico pues entonces firmaba medio anónima: “Barbara Sin Apellido”.

Recordaba la movida madrileña como un trabajo sin oficina, donde aprendían unos de otros, exponían o proyectaban sus obras donde Enpodían.1981, le diagnosticaron un cáncer que le hizo regresar con su ex marido pintor, El Hortelano. Aquella enfermedad y la curación acentuaron su inmenso amor por la vida que Oukalele predicó desde “Noentonces.lorecuerdo como una enfermedad, sino como una intuición de estarlo, no quería reconocerlo. La etapa más dura es la curación, que ojalá cambie porque es tremendo pasar a ser un condenado en un campo de concentración. El crecimiento espiritual es tan grande que lo malo no lo recuerdo”.

Allí pintó inmensas flores enroscadas entre sí, sobre un fondo azul cielo. Tituló su obra “Mi Jardín TrabajóMetafísico”.enun muro de hormigón durante años, subida a una grúa, bajo el tórrido sol de Murcia, donde encontró su inspiración.

“happening” donde me puse un cerdito en la cabeza y me diseñé un traje de fuelle con aros dentro”. Seguramente le inspiró su amiga diseñadora Agata Ruiz de la Prada. A la inauguración iban sus amigos gay con espaguetis a la boloñesa chorreándoles por la cabeza. A sus A partir de los 90, dió el salto internacional. Comenzó a exponer en galerías de Paris, Londres, Bruselas, Roma, Frankfurt… Vendía todo lo que exponía en la Feria ARCO de Madrid. Su obra fotográfica recorrió ciudades más allá de Europa: Nueva York, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, Tel Aviv, Tokio, Shanghai, EnPekín…2005 le fue concedido el Premio Nacional de Fotografía por el Ministerio de Cultura, por su aportación innovadora a la fotografía. Un año antes lo ganó su gran amigo, el fotógrafo Alberto García Alix.

+ LABART eventos acudían los punkis más extremos junto a las señoras mas clásicas con abrigo de visón. En 2017, Loewe diseñó una línea de camisetas inspirada en sus míticas fotografías de tocados absurdos.

“Creo que mi obra se entiende más si meto pintura y no sólo fotografía pura. Sigo una línea personal donde la pintura está desde el principio. Las primeras fotos que publiqué eran en blanco y negro y después me puse a pintarlas. Era lo que yo quería hacer y en eso sigo”.

Tuvo a su hija, Maria, de quien hizo algunos de sus mejores retratos. Amante de la infancia, plasmaba a su niña en pinturas y fotografías. Fue su modelo favorito. En Madrid, llegó a detener el tráfico en la Plaza Cibeles, durante horas, para realizar su reconocida fotografía “Rappelle-toi Bárbara”, que representa el mito de Atalanta e EnHipómenes.los80,Ouka Leele comenzó a exponer en galerías madrileñas y recibía encargos para portadas de revistas como Penthouse o Playboy. Cuando le preguntaban por sus apellidos y su origen acomodado, respondía sin tapujos que necesitaba trabajar y vivía de sus manos. Siempre se negó a pedir ayuda a su familia.

“Peluquería”Sucisterciense”.primeraexposición,dioaconocer su obra y la original técnica que le haría Sentíafamosa.que el laboratorio no le permitía elaborar la estética Dadá que ella deseaba. Así decidió transformarlas ella misma. Coloreaba sus fotos en blanco y negro con acuarelas líquidas, fusionando las dos disciplinas. Inmediatamente conquistó al público madrileño.

Pintaba sus fotos de retratos, con tocados estrambóticos en la cabeza. La muestra se convirtió en la primera de múltiples exposiciones y extrañas “En“performances”.Madridhiceun

Fue nominada a mejor documental en los Premios Goya (2010). Durante cinco años, el director siguió a la pintora en la creación de lo que podría llamarse su “Capilla Sixtina”: un mural de 240 metros en Ceutí, pueblo de Murcia.

Gran parte de su infancia y su concepción de la pintura se plasmaron en la película “La mirada de Ouka Leele” de Rafael Gordon, con música de Eva Gancedo.

“Entiendo la fotografía como poesía visual, una forma de hablar sin usar palabras. Me defino como poeta de lo cotidiano”. Ouka Leele fue la figura mística en la Movida de Madrid. Era amiga íntima y compañera de fatigas de artistas, pintores, El Hortelano, Mariscal, Ceesepe, Javier de Juan… fotógrafos, Alberto García- Alix, cineastas, Pedro Almodóvar y cantantes: Alaska y los “AlaskaPegamoides.eramás glam, y yo más

Pintó su particular jardín mientras los vecinos le daban consejos y piropeaban, lo que ella interpretaba como una forma de transmitirles su alegría por la vida. Colaboró en muchas ediciones de ARCO y su obra fue comprada para su colección. Impartió talleres sobre su técnica autodidacta en universidades, centros culturales y Enfestivales.2016fue nombrada Embajadora de la Candidatura de Segovia a Capital Europea de la Cultura.

Su exposición más completa, “Ouka Leele inédita” en el Museo del Traje (2008), fue un recorrido sentimental y artístico, pleno de vivencias y humanidad.

Vivió momentos de profunda lucidez artística, que le permitió alcanzar los máximos logros sublimando el fondo y la forma.

Barbara mezcló tradiciones españolas con innovaciones de su tiempo aportando un colorido fluorescente que se convirtió en la marca de su arte. Su obra cuestiona los límites de la fotografía y la Enpintura.2005 declaró que tenía 25 años de fotos pintadas, con un proceso manual muy laborioso. Entonces empezó a trabajar con fotografía digital, sacando de su archivo, pendiente de editar, gran material nunca expuesto en blanco y negro.

Barbara pretendía recuperar la emoción del encuentro entre público y artista como en el Renacimiento. Creó una comedia humana plasmada en fotografías.

“He luchado mucho por meter la fotografía en el mundo del arte, y ahora por la libertad del artista, sin limitaciones. Trato de aportar un poco de belleza a este mundo”.

hizo de todo. Trabajó con Concha García Campoy en el libro “La doble mirada”, preparó una serie de dibujos y serigrafías para el “Cantar de los cantares” del Rey Salomón. Además de organizar exposiciones y talleres, publicó varios libros de poemas con dibujos y serigrafías: “Poesía en carne viva” (Atlantis), “Floraleza” (Ahora)…

“Al principio me molestaba que me relacionaran con la Movida y quería olvidarla pero ahora estoy muy orgullosa. Era un movimiento lleno de vitalidad y creatividad. Es un privilegio pertenecer a una generación de artistas. Con el paso del tiempo, veo un movimiento artístico y social. Queríamos cambiarlo todo, trastocar el sistema, renovarlo. A veces volvemos a sentir ese espíritu cuando coincidimos o escuchando un tema de Carlos Berlanga. Volvemos a jugar y a crear juntos”.

“Me atrae mucho la foto tradicional, cuando la luz dibuja. He hecho algo digital, pero el ordenador me cansa. La fotografía digital es un sucedáneo, como entre la teta y el chupete”.

“La idea es montar una escenografía incorporando elementos del teatro y del cine. El blanco y negro es un color muy expresivo, pero la pintura te cambia mucho la imagen. La fotografía pura juega con la realidad”. La realidad de Ouka Leele es la “realidad del recuerdo", según la definición del académico Francisco Rico, con la que se identifica la “Creofotógrafa.una realidad que yo he visto. Recreo una escena con varios elementos artísticos, un espacio, que también tiene algo de arquitectura. Sólo le falta el sonido, como se hacía en la pintura antigua. Con la pintura doy algo más expresivo de mi intimidad, lo que yo siento. Es un ejercicio del recuerdo, lo que he visto, ya que la percepción es muy subjetiva. Es un lenguaje propio, una expresión que se acerca a la autobiografía. Sus obras se han expuesto el Museo del Traje, Museo Reina Sofía, Fundación La Caixa y la Colección ARCO. En 2005 fue reconocida con el Premio Nacional de Fotografía y en 2012 recibió la Medalla de Plata de la Comunidad de Madrid. Su obra ha sido reproducida en cientos de publicaciones. Uno de sus enigmáticos autorretratos fue la portada de Tapas Magazine. With overwhelming creativity, she managed to endow her creations with a particular atmosphere, somewhere between dream and reality. She had the soul of a poet. Her work has an intense flavour of Surrealism and a sweet aroma of intimate poetry. Like the artists of the Renaissance, Ouka Leele played all styles. With an almost sickly sensitivity, she was multidisciplinary: in addition to successful photographer, she was painter, writer and poet.

Bárbara Allende was born in Bilbao (1957), the daughter of architect Gabriel Allende, niece of a poet and a Minister. The first inspiration was her grandfather, amateur photographer and painter. Her sister Patricia was also “photographer.Iwenttoareligious school. The smell of incense, the tulle veils and the monkish ceremonies fascinated me. It was like being in the theatre all the Duringtime.”herchildhood she was fascinated by a kind of mysticism, bordering on asceticism. It was what she cultivated growing up, when she became a key artist of the most well-known movement in Madrid. She always preserved a kind of rebellion and innocence that made her live as if levitating.

She had a daughter, Maria, of whom she made some of her best portraits. A lover of childhood, she captured her girl in paintings and photographs. She encouraged him to get an artistic name since she used to sign: “Barbara no name”. She staged weird performances: projecting photos from a bunker with people parading throwing chicken legs at the audience, while someone read the phone book. She liked to play with the public, creating a mixture of enigma, horror and absurdity. In Barcelona, with poverty as a school, she began to be a great creator of dreams.

In the 90s, she made the international leap exhibiting in galleries: Paris, London, Brussels, Rome, Frankfurt... she sold everything exhibited in ARCO Madrid Fair. Her photographic work toured cities beyond Europe: New York, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, Tel Aviv, Tokyo, Shanghai, Beijing.... In 2005 she was awarded the National Photography Award by the Ministry of Culture for her innovative contribution to photography. A year before, it was won by his friend, Alberto GarcíaAlix.

FRIENDS OF LA MOVIDA Inclined towards painting, she started Fine Arts in Madrid, although she abandoned to start piano studies. At the same time she was attending classes at Photocentro to learn Afterphotography.publishing her first works in a book called “Principio” (Beginnings), she started exhibiting in 1978. Her photos were black and white, because she hated the coloured. When she was commissioned an image for a magazine cover, she invented adding her own colour. In the 1980s, Ouka Leele began to exhibit in Madrid galleries and received commissions for magazines covers such as Penthouse and Playboy. When she was asked about her lineage and wealthy origin, she answered that she lived off her hands. She always refused to ask her family for help. She remembered the Madrid scene as a job without an office, where they learned from each other, exhibiting or projecting their works wherever they could. In 1981, she was diagnosed with cancer which made her return with her ex-husband, painter El Hortelano. That illness and her healing accentuated her immense love for life that she preached ever “since.Idon't remember it as a disease but an intuition of being sick. I didn't want to admit it. The hardest stage is healing, which I hope will change because it is tremendous to become a prisoner in a concentration camp. Spiritual growth is so great I don't remember the bad.”

“I think my work is better understood if I put paint and not just pure photography. I follow a personal line where painting is the beginning. The first photos I published were in black and white and then I started painting them. It was what I wanted to do and that's what I'm still doing”. Part of his childhood and his conception of painting where captured in the film “La mirada de Ouka Leele’s" (O. Gaze) by Rafael Gordon, with music by Eva ItGancedo.wasnominated Best Documentary at the Goya Awards (2010). For five years, the director followed the painter in creating what she called her “Sistine Chapel”: a 240-meter mural in Ceutí, a town in Murcia. She painted immense flowers curled around each other, on a sky blue background. She titled her work “My Metaphysical Garden”. She worked on a concrete wall for years, mounted on a crane, under the torrid sun of Murcia, where she found her inspiration. She painted while her neighbours gave her advice and compliments. She was transmitting her joy for Shelife. collaborated many years in ARCO and her work was purchased for their collection. She gave workshops on her self-taught technique at universities, cultural centres and festivals. She was named Ambassador of the Candidacy of Segovia to European Cultural Capital 2016. Her most complete exhibition was “Ouka Leele inédita” at Museo del Traje (2008). It was a sentimental and artistic tour, full of experiences and humanity.

Barbara identified with the generation of La Movida Madrileña, her soulmates, who frequently appear in her portraits, together with still life, strange objects or fairytale characters. “At first it bothered me to be associated with La Movida and I wanted to forget it but now I am very proud. It was a movement full of vitality and creativity. It is a privilege to belong to a generation of artists. Over time, I see an artistic and social movement. We wanted to change everything, disrupt the system, renew it.

Ouka Leele leads us to question the limits between photography, painting and language. With her soul of poet, she published several collections of poems. Interestingly, in an interview she read this one, which she wrote with only 17 years, and reflects her most intimate sensations: “Death has called me, I'm going with her I will expire tomorrow at the time when I feel it the most and I will be able to finally enjoy life intensely”.

El término Primitivismo designa la apropiación del arte "primitivo" por parte de artistas europeos. Aunque no fue un estilo artístico propiamente dicho, inspiró muchos movimientos y artistas clave del siglo XX: Cubismo (Picasso, Brancusi…) y Arte Naif (Rousseau). Pintores e intelectuales estaban fascinados con las antiguas civilizaciones. Antropólogos e historiadores del arte estudiaron el tema. En francés "primitif" significa "primero, original”. En sus sueños, Tahití era un paraíso alejado de la decadente vida parisina que había perdido el contacto con la verdad. Lejos de adoptar la visión decorativa del género colonial, fue pionero en un estilo totalmente original. «Me cautivó esa tierra virgen y su raza primitiva y sencilla. Para crear algo nuevo, hay que volver a la fuente original, a la infancia de la Elhumanidad».Primitivismo surge en París, en el siglo XX (1905-1935). El catalizador fue la apertura del Musée Trocadero, primero en exponer Arte Africano. Los pintores acudieron buscando inspiración. Algunos se convirtieron en coleccionistas. Pronto viajó por toda Europa. Los artistas clave fueron Paul Gauguin, Henri Rousseau, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Amadeo Modigliani, Constantine Brancusi, Ernst Kirchner y Paul Klee. Henri Rousseau fue un genio autodidacta, famoso por sus escenas imaginarias de la selva. Estudió plantas y animales exóticos en el zoo y jardín botánico de París. Nunca viajó fuera de Francia. Se inspiró en la naturaleza exótica de imágenes en revistas. Pintó en un estilo denominado Naif (ingenuo).

Los ejemplos más famosos aparecen en cuadros de Picasso como "Demoiselles d'Avignon" y "Retrato de Gertrude Stein".

A diferencia de la mayoría de los "ismos", el Primitivismo no tiene características constantes. Mas que un estilo artístico, es una tendencia que aparece en diversos movimientos. Cada uno lo utilizó de forma diferente. Encontramos su influencia en el Postimpresionismo, Expresionismo Alemán (Die Brucke), Surrealismo y especialmente en el Cubismo. Amadeo Modigliani fue a Paris cuando Picasso, que adoraba las máscaras africanas, se inspiró en ellas para pintar sus "Demoiselles d'Avignon" (1907). Esta obra fue crucial: inició el camino hacia el Cubismo y causó una impresión atemporal. Ambos compartían un sentimiento de admiración en torno a todo lo primitivo. Este espíritu se alimentaba de intercambios creativos. Su amigo Constantin Brancusi, fue uno de los principales escultores modernos. Su uso innovador de los materiales, madera y mármol, y su reducción de la forma, se desarrollaron en la Abstracción partiendo de fuentes antiguas. Su principal mecenas, John Quinn, también coleccionaba piezas tribales. Paul Gauguin travelled to French Polynesia searching to escape the “perverted” Europe. In his dreams, Tahiti was a paradise far from Parisian decadent life with people who had lost touch with truth. Far from adopting the decorative view of exoticism from colonial genre painting, he pioneered a totally new style. “I was captivated by that virgin land and its primitive simple race. In order to create something new, one must return to the original source, to the childhood of Primitivismmankind.”

The key artists where Paul Gauguin, Henri Rousseau, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Amadeo Modigliani, Constantine Brancusi, Ernst Kirchner and Paul Klee. The style was as a reaction against conservative art and Industrial Revolution.

PRIMITIVISM

Primitivism has a long expanding in history... lasting till today. The process of profound interaction with ethnic cultures started the previous century by Paul Gauguin. He started painting Tahitian women on burlap sacks in 1891.

is considered to emerge in Paris, in 20th century (1905 and 1935). One catalyst was the opening of Musée Trocadero, the first to display African art. Artists went in search of inspiration. Some became collectors of tribal art. It soon traveled throughout Europe influenced by artists.

Primitivism is a facet of Modern Art inspired by the works of untrained artists in non- industrialised societies, mainly tribal from Africa and Pacific Islands and the ItAmericas.startedin France in 1905 with the enthusiasm for exotic ancient cultures. The term Primitivism signifies the appropriation of “Primitive” art by European artists. It began with the Fauves, Cubists and Expressionists who incorporated elements into their Althoughartworks. it was not itself a fullyfledged artistic style, Primitivism inspired many of the early 20th century's key movements and artists, mainly Cubism (Picasso, Brancusi...) and Naive Art Painters(Rousseau).and intellectuals were fascinated with ancient cultures. This led to a deeper study of this subject by anthropologists and art historians. French word “primitif” means ‘“first, original” deriving from Latin “primitivus”, meaning “first, earliest of its kind”.

Unlike European art, it didn’t value naturalism and figuration. They found inspiration feeling a connection between non- academic art and deep spirituality. They believed that art created by less-civilised people was purer and more instinctual than artificial artistic styles in modern west. Writer and art patron Gertrude Stein collected Gauguin, Impressionists and ethnic art. She supported artists in Paris inviting Matisse, Modigliani, Picasso, Braque, Brancusi… who played a +52

+ LABART decisive role in spreading the thrill for that type of art. Since African masks were among the hottest objects to collect among the Parisian avant- garde set, mask-inspired imagery was also common. The most famous examples appear in Pablo Picasso’s paintings such as “Demoiselles d’Avignon" and "Portrait of Gertrude Stein”. Pierre Matisse built a fundamental bridge between Egyptian archaism, Greek sculpture, formal purity in African Tribal sculpture and Oceania Art.

European artists also looked to surviving artworks from their own prehistoric past as well as to their contemporary peasant cultures. Some were also interested in folk art, untrained art and children’s paintings.

Through his paintings and sculptures he created a dense web of allusions that privileged the aspiration to a pure and essential form. Matisse undermined the conception of art as "representation" and laid the foundations, before Brancusi and Abstractionism, for a pure art with absolute expression of forms.

Henri Rousseau was a self-taught genius famous for his imaginary jungle scenes. He studied exotic plants and animals in Paris zoo and botanical gardens since he never traveled outside France. He was inspired by romantic exotic nature in magazine images. He painted in a style that is also called Naive Art.

There is a deep ambiguity in the concept of “Primitivism” as an art term. It wasn't necessarily confined to non-western art.

Brancusi, was one of the top modern sculptors. His innovative use of materials, wood and marble and his reduction of form developed into abstraction with ancient sources in mind. African and Romanian folk art were his Newinfluences.YorkArt dealer Alfred Stieglitz exhibited his sculptures together with ethnic carvings. Brancusi's main patron John Quinn also collected tribal pieces. His interaction with New York avantgarde led Brancusi to incorporate oval forms of African masks, into his abstract sculptures. For many artists, the lack of emphasis on naturalism, volume, linear perspective and narrative Unlike most “isms”, Primitivism does not have beingcharacteristics.consistentRatherthanatrueartisticstyle,it’s a general trend appearing across diverse movements. Everyone used it differently. We can find its influences in Post-Impressionism, German Expressionism (Die Brucke) , Surrealism and specially AmadeoCubism. Modigliani went to Paris when Picasso, who loved African masks, was inspired by them to paint his “Demoiselles d’Avignon” (1907). This work was crucial: it paved the way towards Cubism and made a lasting impressions. They both shared a feeling of admiration revolving the primitive . This spirit arose in creative exchanges. was Primitivism's main attraction. Accordingly, we often see flattened forms and the use of non-traditional perspective in their works. The fractured forms and multiple perspectives of Cubism are truly indebted to this style. There is a far more complex relationship between Fauvism, Cubism and Tribal Art than what is presented by art historians. It had profound implications on three levels: anthropological, cultural and Whileaesthetic.trendsin art-making shifted in other directions after World War II, one can easily argue that Primitivism has never really ended. Many artists, inspired by this style, still paint nowadays abstracted geometric patterns in bright colours. The lessons that mainstream Euro-American art learned from African and other "primitive" arts are still with us today.

CHILLIDA, HIERRO, FUEGO, TIERRA Y VIENTO Es uno de los escultores más influyentes del siglo XX, comparable a Brancusi, Calder y Giacometti. Apasionado del hierro, aliado del fuego, la tierra y el Suviento.mejor herramienta fue la sencillez que trasmutó en magia esculpida con sus manos. Una infancia feliz junto al mar marcó su intima relación con el paisaje. De niño se hipnotizaba viendo romper las olas donde, ya adulto, colocó su inmensa y famosa escultura “Peine del viento”. Fue su personal homenaje a la ciudad que le vió nacer, vivir y morir. Eduardo Chillida (San Sebastián, 1924-2002) fue hijo de la soprano Carmen Juantegui. Fue jugador profesional de fútbol. Estudió arquitectura en Madrid, abandonando la carrera para formarse en escultura y dibujo en el Círculo de Bellas Artes. Su cambio vocacional respondió a un proceso de maduración intelectual. “La arquitectura es una creación artística para dar respuestas a las necesidades del hombre. La escultura no da respuestas sino que indaga lo desconocido”.

Su crisis le hizo regresar de Paris al País Vasco donde se reencontró con sus raíces. Allí, en una fragua de Hernani, descubrió su pasión por el hierro y formó su estilo personal.

Su obra tiene intimas conexiones con las profundas raíces de la cultura vasca. Su primera escultura abstracta, reinterpreta las estelas funerarias de su tierra. Creó un lenguaje único basado en la indagación, como un viaje intuitivo hacia los misterios de la vida. Su inquietud filosófica le llevó a inspirarse en la naturaleza, la música y el universo.

Siempre visionó los principios arquitectónicos y se autodenominó “Arquitecto del vacío”. Becado en París (1948), realizó sus primeras esculturas figurativas influenciadas por tallas griegas clásicas del Museo del Louvre. Fueron años cruciales de aprendizaje y experimentación. Expuso en el Salon de Mai y en Galerie Maeght junto a genios como Chagall, Miró, Calder y EnGiacometti.1950secasó con su amor de adolescencia, Pilar Belzunce, nacida en Filipinas, con quien tendría ocho hijos y una profunda comunión de almas. Ella fue quien le animó a dejar la carrera de arquitectura y dedicarse a la Encreación.Paristuvo una profunda crisis creativa y trató de destruir todas sus obras. Pilar le animó a reinventarse y a buscar un espacio dónde guardarlas. Siempre conservó todas sus creaciones: dibujos, maquetas, bocetos…

Con las puertas para la Basílica de Aránzazu inició su primera obra pública. Sus piezas monumentales evocan valores universales como tolerancia o libertad.

Mientras el escultor se dedicaba a la creación, su mujer Pilar se ocupaba de las relaciones con galerías, museos y clientes, además de pintar. En 1983, la pareja descubre la finca Zabalaga, inmenso parque con un caserío, joya del siglo XVI. Lo compran, salvándolo de la ruina y se embarcan en la creación de su nuevo hogar y Museo Chillida-Leku (Casa Chillida).

“Mi vida consiste en hacer siempre lo que no sé hacer, porque lo que sé hacer ya lo he hecho... toda mi vida pasa por los verbos buscar, dudar y preguntar ”.

“Nada ha hecho más por la cultura que el deseo de saber del que no Fuesabe”un creador genial y dubitativo.

Gran lector, tuvo en la poesía uno de sus faros y buscó la complicidad de poetas como San Juan de la Cruz, José Ángel Valente, Neruda, Goethe o Edmond Jabés para crear sus poemas escultóricos. “Tengo las manos de ayer, me faltan las de mañana”.

Viajó con frecuencia a París, donde estableció un vínculo clave con Aimé Maeght. Se consideraba un especialista en preguntas. Siempre le daba vueltas a todo, con preguntas como: ¿por qué las ramas de los árboles crecen así? ¿por qué el movimiento del agua y las olas?… Su trabajo, se basaba en preguntas y en sus obras ensayaba las respuestas.

EXPOSICIONES En 1966 tuvo su primera gran muestra retrospectiva en Houston Fine Arts Museum. En 1980 expuso en el Guggenheim New York, el Palacio de Cristal de Madrid y, por primera vez, en el País Vasco: en el Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao. Desde 1989 fue miembro de la Academia de Bellas Artes. El Museo Reina Sofía presentó su mayor exposición retrospectiva en Chillida1998. tiene 50 piezas públicas monumentales y su obra está presente en colecciones y museos de todo el mundo, con casi 500 exposiciones individuales: Guggenheim Bilbao, Jeu de Paume, París, Hermitage, San Petersburgo, Fundación Joan Miró, Barcelona, Mie Prefectural Art Museum, en Tsu-Shi, Japón, el Graphikmuseum Pablo icasso, SomersetRijksmuseum,Münster,Amsterdam,Museum…

Tuvo una azarosa historia marcada por crisis con el Gobierno vasco hasta cerrarse en 2010. Hoy es gestionado por la galería suiza Hauser & Wirth. La pareja más influyente del mundo del arte, según “Art Review”, Manuela Hauser e Iwan Wirth, consiguió la exclusiva de la Sucesión y del Museo. Reabrió en 2019 con Luis Chillida, hijo del escultor, como Presidente de la Fundación Eduardo Chillida y Pilar Belzunce.

Chillida falleció con 78 años en su casa del Monte Igueldo (San Sebastián, 2002), sin culminar su último proyecto: un enorme monumento a la tolerancia en el corazón del Monte Tindaya, Fuerteventura. Su mujer Pilar murió en 2015 en Chillida-Leku. Elegido para perpetuar su legado, el Museo muestra su obra en armónico diálogo con la naturaleza. Allí reposan, bajo un magnolio, las cenizas … polvo enamorado … de la Sobrepareja.laesquela, publicada en “El Diario Vasco”, apareció un pequeño dibujo que hizo Chillida para Pilar, con este texto: “En la medida en que soy naturaleza, sigo mi curso como una estrella".

Hoy, se cumplen veinte años de la muerte del genial “Arquitecto del vacío”. Admirador de Pablo Picasso y Julio González, su legado brilla más que nunca en el museo que creó él mismo. La mayor genialidad de este escultor universal fue su capacidad de crear vanguardia partiendo de lo mas ancestral. Fue aliado con la palabra en una vida de incesante búsqueda. Su afán por descubrir la etérea esencia de los objetos, en cordial batalla con los materiales, se resume en el verso que tomó prestado del poeta Jorge Guillén: “Lo profundo es el aire”.

Eduardo Chillida (San Sebastian, 1924-2002) was the son of the soprano Carmen Juantegui. He was a professional football player. He studied architecture in Madrid, abandoning his studies to learn sculpture and drawing at Círculo de Bellas Artes. His change of vocation responded to a process of intellectual maturation.

His best tool was simplicity, which he transmuted into magic sculpted by his hands.

A happy childhood by the sea marked his intimate relationship with the landscape. As a child he was hypnotised by watching the waves breaking where, as an adult, he placed his immense and famous sculpture "Comb of the Wind". It was his personal homage to the city where he was born, lived and died.

He is one of the most influential sculptors of the 20th century, comparable to Brancusi, Calder and Giacometti. Passionate about iron, allied with fire, earth and wind.

He created a unique language based on enquiry, as an intuitive journey into the mysteries of life. His philosophical restlessness led him to draw inspiration from nature, music and the universe. With the doors for the Basilica of Aránzazu he began his first public work. His monumental pieces evoke universal values such as tolerance and freedom. He travelled frequently to Paris, where he established a key link with Aimé Maeght. He considered himself a specialist in questions. He was always thinking about everything, with questions such as: Why do the branches of trees grow like this? Why the movement of water and waves? His work was based on questions and in his works he rehearsed the answers. "Nothing has done more for culture than the desire to know of those who do not know”. He was a brilliant and hesitant "creator.Mylife consists of always doing what I do not know how to do, because what I know how to do I have already done... my whole life is based on the verbs search, doubt and question”. A great reader, he had poetry as one of his beacons and sought the complicity of poets such as San Juan de la Cruz, José Ángel Valente, Neruda, Goethe and Edmond Jabés to create his sculptural poems. “Architecture is an artistic creation that responds to the needs of man. Sculpture does not provide answers, but investigates the Heunknown”.alwaysenvisioned architectural principles and called himself the "Architect of the void". With a scholarship in Paris (1948), he produced his first figurative sculptures influenced by classical Greek carvings in the Louvre Museum. These were crucial years of learning and experimentation. He exhibited at the Salon de Mai and Galerie Maeght alongside geniuses such as Chagall, Miró, Calder and Giacometti. In 1950 he married his teenage sweetheart, Pilar Belzunce, born in the Philippines, with whom he would have eight children and a deep communion of souls. It was she who encouraged him to leave architecture and devote himself to Increation.Parishe had a profound creative crisis and tried to destroy all his works. Pilar encouraged him to reinvent himself and to look for a place to keep them. He always kept all his creations: drawings, models, him return from Paris to the Basque Country where he rediscovered his roots. There, in a forge in Hernani, he envisioned his passion for iron and formed his personal style. His work has intimate connections with the deep roots of Basque culture. His first abstract sculpture reinterprets the funerary steles of his homeland.

While the sculptor devoted himself to creation, his wife Pilar took care of relations with galleries, museums and clients, as well as painting. In 1983, the couple discovered the Zabalaga estate, an immense park with a farmhouse, a jewel of the 16th century. They bought it, saving it from ruin and embarked on the creation of their new home and the Chillida- Leku Museum (Chillida’s House). It had an eventful history marked by crises with the Basque Government until it was closed in 2010. Today it is managed by the Swiss Hauser & Wirth Gallery. The most influential couple in the art world, according to "Art Review", Manuela Hauser and Iwan Wirth, obtained the exclusive rights to the Succession and the Museum. It reopened in 2019 with Luis Chillida, the sculptor's son, as President of Fundación Eduardo Chillida y Pilar Belzunce.

EXHIBITIONS

An admirer of Picasso and Julio González, his legacy shines more brightly than ever in the museum he created himself. The greatest genius of this universal sculptor was his ability to create the avant-garde from the most ancestral. He was allied with the word in a life of incessant search. His eagerness to discover the ethereal essence of objects, in a cordial battle with materials, can be summed up in the verse he borrowed from the poet Jorge Guillén: "The deep is the air ”. Chillida died at the age of 78 in his home on Monte Igueldo (San Sebastián, 2002), without completing his last project: an enormous monument to tolerance in the heart of Monte Tindaya, Fuerteventura. His wife Pilar died in 2015 in Chillida-Leku. Chosen to perpetuate his legacy, the museum displays his work in harmonious dialogue with nature. There, under a magnolia tree, lie the ashes ... dust in love... of the couple. On the obituary, published in "El Diario Vasco", there was a small drawing that Chillida made for Pilar, with this text: "Insofar as I am nature, I follow my course like a star".

In 1966 he had his first major retrospective exhibition at Houston Fine Arts Museum. In 1980 he exhibited at Guggenheim New York, the Palacio de Cristal in Madrid and, for the first time, in the Basque Country: at Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao. From 1989 he was a member of the Academia de Bellas Artes. Esta especie de vehículo de alta gama se siente a gusto tanto en carretera como en el cielo. Es la culminación de un diseño, ingeniería automotriz y aeroespacial de vanguardia, modernos materiales, características de lujo y un estilo Puedeimpecable.transformarse sin problemas de coche a avión (de conducir a volar) en menos de tres minutos. Han invertido 350.000 horas de diseño, ingeniería y pruebas para crear su último vehículo capaz de volar mas de 740 Km. a 160 Km/h. Suena muy bien, pero, por si acaso, su coste puede ser elevado: la friolera de 1,6 millones $ (1.580.000 €). CLOSER THAN YOU THINK? Accurately predicting the future can be fraught with difficulties and with hindsight even the most sensible predictions can look foolish. Such as when William Orton, President of Western Union, dismissed telephones as a “toy” and turned down the chance to buy the patent for $100,000. It’s easy to laugh when someone gets it so wrong. As the new millennium began and fears of a Y2K generation bug were swiftly Howallayed.many of us predicted the electric car revolution we are currently experiencing?

Henry Ford, 1940 Was he right? Slovak design and his development AeroMobil company certainly think so. The evolution of their supercar is inspired by the mythical winged horse Pegasus. The high-end vehicle species equally at home on the road and in the sky. It can seamlessly transform from car to aircraft – from driving to flying – in under three minutes. Google started their self-driving car project in 2009 and have driven over 20 billion real world and simulated miles in their quest to develop the ‘World's Most Experienced Driver”. In fact, Waymo OneTM already offers fully autonomous taxi rides in Phoenix, Arizona, with customers simply downloading an app and hailing a cab. In the UK, completely self-driving cars are not yet legal for road use. Then there’s the Tesla Model 3’s optional Enhanced Autopilot which will change lanes based on your instruction, monitoring its surroundings as it does so. There is still a long way to go but trials such as the one taking place in Milton Keynes. A remote driver in a call centre delivers an empty electric car for you to jump in and take over the controls. It sows that selfdriving vehicles are on their way.

It is fair to say that the public still need to be convinced of their safety. When you consider that there are 1.35 million vehicle related deaths worldwide each year, with up to 94% crashes caused by human error, self-driving technology may not be perfect but it could well be a safer option.

For autonomous cars to really take off they will need to do more than just navigate safely. They will need to exchange information with the outside world. This will include weather conditions, service stations, road signs, other vehicles, and buildings. Only then will your
