SIDELINE FANATIC You can cheer on sports teams year-round in Newark with: NJ Devils Hockey at PruCenter (Sept-April), Red Bulls Soccer in Harrison (Mar-Oct), and Newark Bears Baseball (May-Sept).
If you enjoy Halloween you’ll love Stadium of Screams (Oct 25-Nov 2), a spooky haunt through Newark Bears stadium. On Oct 31st, Halsey Street will host a Haunted Block Party.
ART scene to be seen Open Doors (Oct 11-20) offers access into Newark’s growing art scene with free exhibits and tours. NJ’s largest museum, Newark Museum, will host Norman Rockwell in 2014 (Feb 28May 26).
There’s a lot of great shows and concerts to see at the NJPAC (NJ Performing Arts Center) like Hungry, Hungry Games, a Hunger Games Parody (Oct 12); Cirque: Eloize (Dec 13) and many more! And students can get tickets for only $10 at over 20 performances. Plus don’t forget concerts at the Prudential Center like Drake (Oct 27); Pink (Dec 11) and more to be announced.
Washington Park
SUPER CELEBRATION! New Jersey will be host to the first cold weather Superbowl and some of the action will happen here in Newark. Superbowl Media Day will be at the PruCenter on January 28.
BLOOMING BUDS Newark has more cherry blossoms than Washington DC. Check out Branch Brook Park’s Cherry Blossom Festival: Bloomfest when the park comes alive in pink.
The downtown park is across the street from Rutgers Business School. The park features a farmers market until the end of October and year-round there is free yoga on Wednesdays either in the park or in the lobby of 1 Washington Park.
Military Park This park is currently going through a renovation managed by the group that did Bryant Park in NYC. Look for the soft opening for part of the park in late Fall.

Branch Brook Park
Newark has a history of jazz and NJPAC brings the city to life again with the James Moody Democracy of Jazz Festival (Nov 4-10) offering competitions and shows all week long.
Branch Brook is easy to get to via the Light Rail. There are running trails and the Cherry Blossoms in the spring.
Riverfront Park You can now stroll along the water on an orange boardwalk in the recently opened Riverfront Park in the Ironbound.
WEEquahic Park Weequahic Park offers a great golf course ($35 fee, $21 if you get a county ID card), a great path for jogging, and beautiful fields for all sports.

No car? No problem! Newark is one of the most public transit friendly cities in the country.
LIGHT RAIL (Newark subway)
If walking isn’t your thing, the light rail can shuttle you around downtown and even into other parts like Branch Brook Park.
PATH TRAINS For $2.25, the PATH can take you to Jersey City, Hoboken and even New York. The Newark train goes directly into World Trade Center or you can change in Jersey City for other NYC stops.Follow them on twitter @PATHTrain to learn of delays or problems.
NJ TRANSIT NJ Transit trains & buses criss cross the city, county and state and into New York. Visit njtransit.com for lines and schedules. Commuting students should check out the student pass for discounts - see backcover for details.
CROSS STATE LINES If you’re trying to get to Boston, Philly or DC - Newark is a stop for Amtrak or get cheap seats (as low as a few bucks) on Bolt Bus, which leaves from Newark.
BIKING There are new bike lanes around town and even a bike shop with cheap bikes at 239 Washington St.
