Qualifications A Level Studying for A Levels will give you the broad knowledge base to continue to university to study at a higher level. A Level study is traditionally an academic, theory based route, however New College Stamford prides itself on the modern approach to A Level delivery with the inclusion of practical elements, live project and community work. If you choose to study A Levels with us, you will choose 4 AS Levels in the first year of your study. Students will then normally, drop 1 AS Level and continue the second year of study with 3 A2 Levels. This means that you will leave us with 3 A Levels and 1 AS Level ready for the next step to university or into employment.

Guide to the Qualification Levels

Vocational Vocational qualifications are courses that allow you to gain the practical skills and knowledge to progress straight into your chosen industry. They suit students who either know the career path they’d like to take (e.g. hairdressing, catering) or students who prefer to learn in a hands on way and enjoy learning new skills that will prepare them for industry. Within the vocational area of the College students can choose from a number of different levels, depending on the qualifications already held.

Apprenticeships If you know you want to carry on studying and gaining qualifications along the way, but you’re also ready to get out into the work place to start working and earning money, then an Apprenticeship is the perfect solution for you! Apprentices learn on the job, building up their knowledge and skills, gaining qualifications and earning money all at the same time. If you’ve chosen to do full time study with us at the College, you’ll need to know which level is suitable for you and the qualifications that you may already hold. The chart opposite will give you a better idea of where you sit and which level you should apply to work towards. This is a general overview of what’s needed for each level; however some courses have specific entry requirements so make sure you look at what each course asks for!

A LEVEL These are Level 3 qualifications but we ask that students have a minimum 5 GCSEs grade A*-C including English and Maths and a minimum APS of 40.

Work, Rest and Play Choosing to study at New College Stamford brings more than just the educational and training beneďŹ ts. Students can get involved in activities both in the College and out in the community and there’s a range of facilities on site you can use for work, rest and play. Learning Resource Centre This area provides students with books, periodicals, newspapers, computer software, flip cameras, video recorders and other materials to aid study. The LRC combines areas for group work, silent study, computer suites and other computers which can be booked by students for allocated time slots.

Information Technology The College has approximately 1,100 computers, including 110 Apple Macs, across the College for student use in lessons and for private study or group work. Students also benefit from superfast WiFi across the College allowing them to bring in their own devices for study and research. Our LRC has recently been upgraded with 120 high performance PCs available for students only. 25 multi-functional devices are available for students for printing, copying and scanning needs and we have a remote printing facility for students to submit print jobs from home or own devices.

Food and Drink On site we have two food outlets – the Bistro and the Refectory. The Refectory is open Mon-Fri, 8:15am-2:15pm serving a range of hot and cold foods, drinks and snacks. The Refectory also has themed days where students are able to purchase meals from different cultures. The theme days have been extremely successful so far with students enjoying food from Italy, China, India, Mexico and some

Traditional English meals. The Bistro is open Mon - Fri from 8:45am - 4:30pm (Wed closure is 8:00pm and Thurs is 7:30pm). The Bistro serves a range of food including soup, sandwiches, paninis, jacket potatoes and hot and cold drinks.

Common Room Students use the common room as a place to chill out, play pool, listen to music and chat with friends. The Learner Involvement Officer also puts on tournaments on the Xbox which students can sign up for. Based just outside the common room is the Student Union office where you can discuss your ideas for improving college life, socials and student fundraising activities.

Penny Lane Students from the Skills for Work and Living department undertake valuable work experience at Penny Lane based in the Reception area of the College. The shop sells a range of penny sweets, lollipops, stationery and gifts at very reasonable prices and proves very popular with both staff and students.

Enrichment New College Stamford offers a rounded education to its students, and whether you are studying an academic A Level programme or undertaking a vocational course, you are encouraged to think beyond the classroom and take part in enrichment activities.

Here to Support You We are here to help you at all stages as you progress through your learning journey. We will provide advice and support with any aspect of your learning to ensure you are successful in your studies here at New College Stamford. Student Advisors

Personal Counselling

Student Advisors will help you settle into college life. They will help you manage your time, develop your study skills and help build your confidence during regular tutorial and one-to-one sessions.

Our professional College Counsellors are available to support students during term time on an appointment and drop-in basis. The service is strictly confidential and can help you deal with any personal problems during your time at the College. One-to-one sessions can help with concerns about study, family relationships, personal relationships, self-esteem or a host of other problems. Our Counsellors also work with various external agencies and organisations to provide additional, specialist support where necessary.

Careers Guidance and Advice This is a very important aspect of support for all our students. Our qualified and experienced advisers hold individual careers interviews as well as assisting students with information on applying for training schemes, jobs, CV writing, gap years and applying for Higher Education. Support is available to assist students throughout the UCAS and Student Finance application process. The Careers Library is situated in the Learning Resource Centre and is kept up to date with all relevant information with access to the internet and career related computer software.

College Chaplains Our friendly College Chaplains are available to offer pastoral care and support for all students and staff members. The chaplains are actively involved in college life and welcome students from all faiths and none. There is a quiet room available for prayer, reflection and meditation or simply for when you need time to think.

Safeguarding New College Stamford is committed to carrying out all its activities with a view to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. Our child protection policy and procedures are rigid and thorough and are in keeping with locally agreed inter-agency procedures. How to Apply You can complete an application form and post it to: New College Stamford, Drift Road, Stamford, Lincs, PE9 1XA. Alternatively you can submit an application online at www.stamford.ac.uk. Please ensure all information is provided in full so we can

successfully process your application. On receipt of your application we will send you an acknowledgment and you will then be invited to attend an informal interview. The interview will be an opportunity for you to discuss all aspects of your chosen course and any alternative options that you may be considering. You may then be sent a ‘conditional offer’ of a place to study at New College Stamford with details of the exam results/entry requirements to be met in order to qualify to enrol onto the course. It is important you confirm your acceptance to the course as soon as possible.

Tuition Fees You can study a full time course free of charge if you are a UK student and are under 19 years of age on 31 August 2012. You may be required to purchase specialist equipment, materials and/or a uniform depending on the course you choose. If you are over 19 years of age on 31 August 2012 you will be asked to pay towards the cost of your tuition. The fees for 2012/13 further education were £875 tuition plus £100 exam registration per year. However, if you are studying towards a full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification and you do not already have a full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification, you may 10

If you are under 20 years old when you start your course and have a child you may be entitled to claim for your childcare and any additional travel costs. The fund is paid directly to your childcare provider and to the course provider so that they can fund your travel.

Bursary Fund The Bursary Fund offers financial support to students who are 16-18 years of age and in full time Further Education at New College Stamford, depending on their financial circumstances. Financial support is available to assist with essential course related costs such as transport costs, uniform and materials etc. Students aged 19+ may also be eligible for financial assistance from the Learner Support Fund.

Learner Support Fund (19+) This fund can help with costs for books, equipment, exam fees, childcare and transport. There are, of course, some conditions you and/or your parents must meet in order to be eligible for assistance (e.g. be on a low income or in receipt of an income tested benefit).

Additional Learning Support During your first few weeks in College your course tutors will be getting to know you and finding out about the skills you have and where you need extra help in order to successfully complete your course. Sometimes you may need extra help with literacy, numeracy, exam skills, writing an assignment or any other problem that may be worrying you. We will assess whether in class or one-to-one support in the Study Centre would be beneficial. If you have the academic qualifications to join a course, don’t let your learning or physical disability stop you. We have experienced staff who will work with you and your course tutors, to ensure that you get the support you need. When you first come to New College Stamford you will be asked to take part in an assessment of your reading, writing and maths as this will help us to make sure we are offering you the right support and help. You will have a chance to speak with one of the Study Centre team at your interview. We welcome applications from students who may need some extra help because of a learning difficulty or a disability. Functional Skills Functional Skills are the practical skills that help you gain the most out of work, education and everyday life. You can achieve a Functional Skills qualification in English, Mathematics and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) from Entry Level 1 through to Level 2. Each subject is a qualification in its own right and they are the skills and qualities that employers are looking for. At New College Stamford, Functional Skills are taught through a combination of dedicated teaching sessions and are also integrated into your course work. The unit assessments are taken at the end of your studies. These assessments are based primarily on task-based scenario questions and assessed under supervised & controlled conditions at College. The Functional Skills assessments will use and reinforce your learning, practical skills and problem-solving techniques. Each of the three Functional Skills has a set of performance standards based on three key areas: Mathematics • Representing – selecting the mathematics and information required to model a situation • Analysing – processing and using mathematics • Interpreting and communicating the results of the analysis ICT • Use of ICT systems • Finding and selecting information • Developing, presenting and communicating information English • Speaking and listening • Reading • Writing All new students joining the College on Level 1 & Level 2 courses in September will study a combination of Functional Skills dependant on their course. However, Functional Skills are available to all students as an additional qualification and Level 2 Functional Skills are worth 10 UCAS points each. William Stanley is studying A Level Sociology at New College Stamford. “Studying Sociology was an interesting and eye-opening experience that has given me greater knowledge on the issues society faces today. The breadth and depth that Sociology covers has enabled me to understand more in terms of human behaviour, social interaction, the way society is structured, cultures and subcultures, the problems faced by society as well as within society, and the way society can influence those within it, yet also be influenced by those within it. After enrolling at college, Sociology was my last option, with little known about the subject and it filling a gap on my timetable, however, I have come to love the subject and will be studying it at degree level come September”

The department has a range of dedicated suite rooms for the delivery of A Level subjects. In addition the Sciences make use of a suite of dedicated laboratories which were extensively refurbished in the summer of 2012 whilst the Arts and Performing Arts subjects make use of facilities across the college including the Theatre and rehearsal rooms, photography studio and dark room, and specialist art, design and fashion spaces. Media and Film Studies students use specialist software in dedicated computer and Mac suites and A level PE students make full use of the colleges sports facilities. Students also have access to laptops to support research and presentations in lessons.

AQA Baccalaureate This course is validated by AQA

two year course Aim The AQA Baccalaureate is a qualification that recognises and celebrates the achievements of well rounded students with A Levels and more. It is available to appropriately qualified A Level students who are looking to stand out from the crowd. Content Baccalaureate students will not only study for 3 A Levels but will also undertake: Independent Learning – through the Extended Project which develops students’ abilities to manage tasks using their own initiative and resources. Broader Study – AS Critical Thinking uses discussion and specific techniques for appraising and writing arguments, to raise students’ critical skills and attainment in all subjects. Enrichment Activities – Opportunities for community participation, work related learning

and/or personal development are available to Baccalaureate students who must complete 100 hours of enrichment in the 2 years. one year course Aim Students will learn to appreciate how science impacts on present day society and the importance of science as a human endeavour which interacts with every aspect of life. Content This AS Level comprises three units: Unit 1: Investigation Science at Work (Coursework) Unit 2: Energy Transfer Systems (Exam) Unit 3: Finding out about Substances (Coursework) Progression opportunities This qualification allows students to progress in a number of ways including further study in A Level Biology

and Chemistry, National Diploma in Health Studies and Foundation Degrees in Science and Health and Social Care. Possible employments routes would include the chemical industry, health care, leisure and associated industries, medical and laboratory based science or the food and catering industries. Entry requirements APS 40 and 5 GCSEs A*-C grade including English and Maths and Grade C in Double Award Science and Maths. Additional information A lab coat and safety glasses are required for this course. These can be purchased from the College and will cost approximately £15. Students will also need a scientific calculator for this course.

two year course Aim To provide a wide ranging grounding in Biology topics for students who wish to study sciences at university level, work in a science based setting and who have an interest in the subject. To provide practical and written scientific skills. Content During the first year (AS) of this course students will study topics such as cell structure, biochemistry, heart function and disease, plant products, genetics, gene therapy and stem cell research, drug testing and biodiversity. In the second year (A2) topics include ecology, photosynthesis, respiration, climate change, microbiology, exercise physiology, the nervous system, brain function and behaviour.

Progression opportunities On completion of this course students can progress to Higher Education in the study of Biology and related applied sciences including Medicine, Veterinary Sciences, Forensic Science, Nursing and Midwifery. Alternatively students can progress to employment where knowledge of Biology is required. Entry requirements APS 40 and 5 GCSEs A*-C grade including English and Maths and Grade B in Double Award Science or a B in Biology and a B in Maths. Additional information Students are required to have a lab coat which can be purchased from the College.

Current A Level Biology student, Tom Giddings has gained a university place to become a paramedic. Tom is on call several nights a week and at weekends for ‘First Assist’, he is also a College First Aider. A Level Biology is an essential and invaluable qualification for his further study and employment route.

two year course Aim This qualification provides students with a critical understanding of the internal function of business organisations and the dynamic environment within which businesses operate. Content This course consists of four units which are all assessed by examinations. The units of study are Planning and Financing a Business, Managing a Business, Strategies for Success and The Business Environment and Managing Change.

Progression opportunities This serves as an important basis for entry into any business environment. Students will be aware of the functions of the business and their activities. The skills acquired during the course are transferable and complement learning in other areas, such as the ability to analyse data and arrive at a justified conclusion. AS/A2 LEvel Chemistry

two year course Aim This course aims to both build on the knowledge gained at GCSE level and to develop new skills for those with an interest in Chemistry. Throughout the course students will have the opportunity to carry out a wide range of practical techniques which will be highly valued by employers in industry.

Progression opportunities Students will be able to continue to university level qualifications that will lead to a health-related career, such as medicine or veterinary medicine. A Level chemistry is also a sought after qualification by employers due to the numeracy and problem-solving skills that students develop throughout the course.

Performing Arts & Music For people who are either working in or looking to work in the music and performing arts industry. If you want to become part of this world as a musician, performer, or possibly a record producer, then a course at New College Stamford could be just what you need to get you started. Our facilities are outstanding with large and spacious rehearsal rooms, a theatre, recording studios and mac suites. We also recently launched our very own record label and radio station ‘Infinity’ which gives students outstanding experience in a range of disciplines. Edward Nolan joined the Entry Level course from Marshfields School. In his time at New College Stamford, Edward has become more independent, travelling unaccompanied to College. Edward particularly enjoys his work experience at Nene Valley Railway. Charlotte Snell is progressing steadily on the Entry Level courses. She joined New College Stamford from the Phoenix School and every year has grown in confidence. Charlotte now works well in class and enjoys having her lunch in the College restaurant. Latoya Donnelly joined New College Stamford from Marshfields School. Despite many challenges she has shown real determination and commitment, and will shortly be joining Pathways.

Entry 1, Entry 2, Entry 3 Entry 1, Entry 2, Entry 3

Entry Level courses at New College Stamford are offered at three levels: Entry 1, Entry 2 and Entry 3. All the courses are accredited by AIM Awards – an awarding organisation recognised by Ofqual, the regulatory authority for qualifications in England. Entry Requirements There are no formal academic entry requirements. Entry on to the programme will be based on an interview and satisfactory references. To ensure students are placed at the appropriate course level, all students will be offered taster days and, where possible, staff will visit students at their school. Course Structure Entry Level courses are offered at three levels: Entry 1, Entry 2 and Entry 3. All courses run for one year. Entry 1 and 2 are multi-disciplinary courses supporting social and academic development. At Entry 3, students can follow a multi-disciplinary course or choose to specialise and join Entry 3 – Gardening. new college stamford Sarah Reid joined New College Stamford from Aveland High School, Sleaford. After completing the Entry Level courses she progressed to Pathways in September 2011. Sarah chose catering as her Pathways option and, following her success, is now looking forward to joining Level 1 Catering.

Jazz Altaf successfully completed the New College Stamford Pathways course and moved on to Level 1 Motor Vehicles in 2010. He has made good progress and is now studying for Level 2.

Danielle Raven joined the New College Stamford Pathways course in preparation for joining Level 1 Beauty. Year on year she has thrived and is now studying Level 3 Beauty. She is well on her way to becoming a qualified Beauty Therapist and hopes to one day own her own salon.

Steven Cook joined Pathways from Priory School. During his time at Stamford he has matured into a confident and outgoing student. He is now studying Level 1 Sport.

For students who are interested in a career in the travel and tourism industry, our courses provide students with the necessary skills and knowledge required.

You will gain first-hand experience of the travel and leisure industry through work placements, trips and visits and guest speakers. Level 3 students will study towards the NCFE certificate in the Introduction to Cabin Crew in our exceptionally impressive onsite mock aircraft cabin. Many of our students progress well into the industry with some students going on to become cabin crew for a range of airlines.
