New College Stamford is committed to widening participation and so where applicants do not have the stated entry qualification, they may submit alternative evidence to reinforce their application, together with a supporting portfolio. Work, Rest and Play You will find plenty of resources at New College Stamford from the traditional library to high specification computer areas. Everywhere is user friendly and well stocked with the resources you need to assist you with research and gathering materials for assignments.
Learning Resources Centre Our students benefit from extensive learning facilities in our Learning Resources Centre (LRC) which includes a quiet room and dedicated computer space for Higher Education students. The LRC contains over 15,500 catalogue items including books, periodicals, magazines, newspapers, leaflets, feature films and videos. Information files and over 700 art slides are also available, as well as computers with access to MS Office, the internet, email and a range of compact discs. It combines a spacious general study area with clusters of open access and bookable computers. Study spaces are provided alongside separate rooms for silent and group work. Our friendly and supportive staff will show you how and where to find the information you need. Information Technology We offer outstanding IT facilities. With a total of over 800 computers across the College, purely for student use, we are well equipped to provide students with the IT resources you need. Situated above the LRC, our IT Zone provides state-of-the-art facilities. The IT Zone and LRC together have 91 computers available to students whilst computer suites in each department are tailored to the needs of students and mobile laptop suites deliver greater flexibility for staff and students. All computers for students run Windows 7 and Office 2010. With access to the internet and online databases you can broaden your research skills whilst working in a comfortable and welcoming environment.

Visual Arts Centre Our Visual Arts Centre has base rooms providing continual study space for students. Specialist study takes place in the specifically equipped life drawing room, photographic studio, 3D workshops and Apple Macintosh suites. Food and Drink The Refectory is centrally situated and open from early morning until mid-afternoon serving fresh meals, snacks and drinks at very reasonable prices. Our Bistro is located in the Welcome Zone - a bright and airy space that provides the perfect spot for a lighter meal or catch up with friends over coffee and cake. Chill Out Our Common Room provides a great space for students to chill out and chat to friends or play pool. You can also discuss ideas with the Student Union team who have their office close by in the Refectory. The Penny Lane Shop sells newspapers and magazines as well as a broad range of Fair Trade confectionery - great for a daytime treat or a last minute gift. The shop is run by our Skills for Work and Living students.

Here to Support You During your first few weeks in College your programme co-ordinator will be getting to know you and finding out about the skills you have and where you need extra help in order to successfully complete your course.
Sometimes you may need extra help with literacy, numeracy, exam skills, writing an assignment or any other problem that may be worrying you. We will arrange support in the classroom or on a one-to-one basis in the Study Centre, as required. We may ask you to apply for a Disabled Student Allowance (DSA), if appropriate.

We have experienced staff who will work with you and your course tutors to ensure that you get the support you need. Careers Guidance and Advice This is a very important aspect of support for all our students. Our qualified and experienced advisers hold individual careers interviews as well as offering students information on a range of things including applying for graduate training schemes, job advice and CV writing.
You will have the chance to speak with our Disability Adviser at your interview. We welcome applications from students who may need some extra help because you have a learning difficulty or a disability.
The Careers Library is situated above the Learning Resource Centre (LRC) and managed on a day-to-day basis to ensure that all the information is up-to-date and accurate. There is access to the internet and a wide range of career related computer software.

Money Matters Tuition Fees For UK and EU students applying for a full time Higher Education course at New College Stamford starting in September 2013, the tuition fee will be £5,999 per annum. Fees for part time courses may differ – please contact us for details. Tuition fees do not have to be paid ‘up front’. All students are eligible to take out a student loan to cover the whole tuition course fee over the duration of your course. The Government student loans company ‘Student Finance England’ facilitates the allocation and repayment of loans to Higher Education students in the UK. There are a few financial packages available that could help you pay for the costs of studying: Tuition Fee Loan A loan that covers the full cost of tuition fees over the duration of your course. Your fees are paid directly from Student Finance England to us, so no need to worry about paperwork or paying fees on time! Maintenance Loan A loan to help with living costs. Students from lower income households may be eligible for more. Maintenance Grant A grant of up to £3,250 per year is available to lower income households. You do not have to pay this back. If your household income is under £25,000 you will get the full grant. Households with incomes between £25,000 and £42,500 will get a proportion of the grant. Additional Support You could be eligible for more financial support if you have a disability or learning difficulty or if you have adults or children who are dependent on you. Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) Local Education Authorities (LEAs) can award DSAs to part time and full time undergraduate students who can show that they have a disability, mental health condition or specific learning difficulty that affects their ability to

study. The DSA helps pay for any extra costs you have to pay as a direct result of your learning disability or learning difficulty. The allowance can help with the cost of a non-medical personal helper, items of specialist equipment, travel and other course-related costs. A copy of ‘Bridging the Gap: a Guide to the Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSAs) in Higher Education’ is available from www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance. To find out how much you are eligible for assistance go the ‘Student Finance Calculator’ on the same site. When to Apply for Student Finance? You can apply online at www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance as soon as you have applied to us.
National Scholarship Programme (NSP) From September 2013 the College is offering four Scholarships of £3000 each. Each Scholarship is spread over the two years of Higher Education courses. Part of the money is towards a fee waiver and the rest is a cash bursary. Prospective students who are entitled to apply for one of the Scholarships fall within the following groups: 1. Looked after children/care leavers 2. Students with disabilities 3. Learners from lower socio-economic groups 4. Learners from ethnic minority groups 5. Travellers 6. Refugees The scholarships will be awarded to four students who fall within the categories above but meeting the eligibility criteria will not guarantee receipt of a scholarship. Any student who falls within the groups above, who firmly accepts an offer of a place on a course at the College will be contacted and invited to complete an NSP application form. Whenever possible applicants will be informed if they are successful or not before the programme begins.

Aim This course provides a broad introduction to art and design, preparing you for application to Higher Education courses. We offer a friendly and supportive environment in which to develop your abilities, appraise your strengths and develop your ideas and skills. We will also enable you to define and make decisions about your future career aspirations. Content The course is characterised by experimental and experiential learning. The programme of study ensures that a full range of teaching expertise and learning opportunities are provided. This course is enriched with a variety of project linked visits, including a five day residential in a European city. Additionally, a comprehensive liberal studies programme with visiting speakers from a wide range of professional backgrounds ensures that students become aware of the demands of art and design and recognise the common principles and distinctive characteristics of subject disciplines. Allowing students to make informed career/UCAS choices. A high value is placed on independent research and self motivated study. The programme aims to develop a student’s independent creative thinking abilities, allowing them to take ideas and explore the possibilities through a range of visual and craft processes. As the course progresses, study becomes more focused within the student’s specialist area of choice. Specialisms include visual studies, 3D studies, graphics, illustration, spatial design, printmaking, photography, film, fashion and textiles.
Duration This is a one year, full time course. Entry requirements Either one arts based A Level or a vocationally relevant qualification (such as Extended Diploma). You will need 5 GCSEs A* - C including English or Level 2 Diploma with a Merit grade. You will need to provide a portfolio at interview. Mature students can offer life skills as an alternative to formal qualifications. Progression & career opportunities The Foundation course at New College Stamford has flourished over the last few years to earn an enviable reputation for excellence. The course has achieved high rates of progression, with many students being accepted onto high calibre degree courses, at prominent universities, to study a variety of specialist subjects. Extra information It is the preferred qualification for most art based university courses and the majority of top universities still require the Foundation qualification. Statistically students acquiring Foundation are far more likely to complete an arts degree than those without. A Foundation Pass is worth 165, Merit 225, Distinction 285 UCAS points. It is also a recognised access course for mature students with few formal qualifications. Aim This course is intended for adults working, volunteering or leading within children's services across a range of settings and provisions. This work based course combines practice based learning and campus-based sessions once a week so that you are able to continue in employment. It is designed to improve and develop your personal and professional communication skills, to develop knowledge of new ways of working and to challenge existing assumptions. Content The Foundation Degree in Applied Studies addresses the core skills and knowledge required of practitioners working in a range of settings. The course is organised into two levels, each comprising four modules to be completed over two years. Each module is awarded 30 credits.

Assessment A variety of assessment methods are used including group and individual presentations, written assignments such as essays and reports, case studies, discussions, debate, portfolios of work-based learning and examination. All assessment allows and encourages you to reflect on your practice and theory as you evidence your learning. Duration This is a for two year, part time course. Entry requirements You will normally have a relevant qualification at Level 3. For example A Level in Psychology or Sociology, BTEC Diploma in Children's Care, Learning and Development, or Health and Social Care.
In the first year you will examine principles of learning as an introduction to Higher Education and investigate the complex relationships affecting learning. You will consider the philosophies underpinning current UK practice within a legislative framework and examine the psychological and sociological theories that impact on this within a relative context.

It is important to emphasise that this course is distinct from Graphic Design or Illustration, although it strives to connect with both disciplines. This is a Fine Art based course that concentrates on the image developed and supported by both material and virtual media.
