nother year is upon us. Isn’t it amazing? We’ve been through so much these past two years. But I’m hopeful and optimistic that it will all be okay.

Frankly, it feels like just yesterday that I was embarking on the launch of New York Lifestyles. That was seven years ago, and I had no idea how the publication would be received or whether New Yorkers would even enjoy reading it.

But today, I’m able to look back on this past year in awe and with deep, deep gratitude.

You, our NYLM community, are the ones who helped us make this magazine what it is today—by leaps and bounds. I thank you! You have continually emailed us with your likes (and dislikes) that inspire, entertain, and inform.

FRANCOIS-OLIVIER LUIGGI THE NEXT 90 YEARS: AN INTERVIEW WITH THE PIERRE HOTEL’S GENERAL MANAGER

If you’ve been fortunate enough to be a guest at this iconic hotel, then you no doubt have had the pleasure of meeting the affable gentleman with a ready smile.

Of course, no one could mistake Francois-Olivier Luiggi, the General Manager of The Pierre NY, a Taj Hotel. In a heartbeat, he will make his way from the lobby to the iconic Rotunda before arriving at the Grand Ballroom to see the ongoing progress of a reimagined look that will take us into the next 90 years (slated to open Spring 2022).

Mr. Luiggi has been welcoming the well-heeled to luxury establishments worldwide for more than two decades. Before taking the role of GM at The Pierre in 2015, the native Corsican— who speaks fluent English, French, and Italian—held the post of Corporate Food and Beverage Training Specialist for the Four Seasons brand where he launched some nineteen hotels and resorts in Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. Back on U.S. soil, he’s been GM of the Langham Fifth Avenue and Hotel Manager of The Mark Hotel He also knows quite well what makes The Pierre special: the people who have worked 24/7 since 1930. The fantastic team of dedicated employees, most of them with long years of service, have seamlessly adapted to the changing trends over the years. As a result, everyone cares deeply about The Pierre. He rarely has seen such dedication, sense of belonging and purpose, in an established hotel like this.

A typical day for him starts with a morning lineup with the senior management team. After that, the day revolves around the arrival list, the most vital document in a hotel. It is reviewed twice a day and includes all the relevant information about each guest, their room allocation, etc. After that, a good part of his day is spent answering guests’ requests and helping them with planning their visits when necessary. Finally, the remaining portion of Mr. Luiggi’s day is spent with his team and visiting every department at least once a day.

New York Lifestyles recently visited with Francois-Olivier Luiggi and found The Pierre still as enchanting as ever. It never grows old.

How did you become interested in the hospitality industry?

I grew up in a large family on Corsica. My grandmother was always cooking and entertaining for all of us. Her family dinners became an anchor in our lives, and we were all expected to pitch in. Early on I learned the finer points of hospitality from her and soon became interested in learning how to prepare the foods that were so special.

How has your role as General Manager evolved over the years?

The last two years with COVID restrictions have been the most challenging. As a general manager of The Pierre, we not only need to ensure our guests are safe, but we also have full-time residents who reside in the co-op. My role is both a business manager and a relationship manager. In addition to overseeing the business side of the hotel which means the basic functions and structures are in place, the general manager must also be the face of the hotel and be there to greet guests and get to know them individually. At a hotel like The Pierre, we place a huge emphasis on understanding what our guests need, what their likes and dislikes are and how we can make their stay exceed expectations from the minute they arrive at the hotel until after they depart.

With your many years of experience in hotel management, what makes The Pierre one of the world’s most special properties?

At The Pierre good enough is not enough. For more decades The Pierre has stood for unmatched hospitality and timeless elegance.

This includes everything from our Les Clefs d’Or Concierge

service to our extraordinary farm-to-table cuisine, 24-hour room service, the architecture, and to the guests who make The Pierre so special.

When Charles Pierre established the hotel in 1930 it was meant to serve as a home away from home for guests. For the past 90 years, exquisite entertaining has been synonymous with The Pierre.

Its opulent Grand Ballroom, Cotillion Room, and Rotunda continue to host New York’s most unforgettable events, while chic, multi‐functional meeting rooms welcome private gatherings, from intimate closing dinners to annual shareholder meetings.

A 1930’s New York guidebook said, “The Pierre Hotel is beautiful, gorgeous, distinctive—catering only to those of refined tastes who can afford the best in the way of hotel luxury.” This is as true today as it was then.

Many hoteliers say true hospitality is defined by personalized service provided to guests. Tell us how The Pierre leads in this aspect?

My motto is quite simple: to make it work, you have to mean it. Or to say that another way, you cannot just go through the motions. Our teams go above and beyond just remembering the names of our guests. We had a couple in the restaurant with a young child who clearly had other ideas of where she wanted to be. The staff learned that a certain cartoon character was her favorite and presented her with cookies in the shape of the character. She was delighted, and the parents were able to enjoy their meal. There are countless stories like that.

People don’t want to be type cast. Now it is all about “me,” about being an individual, and so the challenge for those of us in a luxury hotel like The Pierre is to get you to tell us about yourself.

This is not always easy, because the other big trend for hotels is the disappearance of personal transactions as technology becomes a bigger and bigger part of our business. We can no longer rely on the traditional check-in to find out what we can do to make your stay more enjoyable. We can no longer wait for guests to approach the concierge to discover how we can personalize our service. By then, it is too late.

So, we must look for new ways to learn about you. From our elevator operators to our front desk and concierge teams, our staff is trained to learn about our guests. When an executive guest called our front desk, the Front Desk Manager could tell that he was stressed because he couldn’t make up his mind about a routine question. The Manager asked if there was anything he could do to help, and the guest confessed that he was nervous about a speech he had to deliver later in the day. →

The Manager gave him some words of encouragement that seemed to help. But he didn’t stop there. When the guest stopped by the desk to pick up some documents, the Front Desk Manager had attached an inspirational quote to the envelope. Our guest was smiling from ear to ear when he left for his speech.

What are your key goals to ensure The Pierre remains a leader in the New York City hotel market?

Every hotel has a specific DNA. The Pierre has not changed its core DNA since 1930 when it was built to entertain on a grand scale. Charles Pierre chose renowned French Chef Auguste Escoffier as the opening chef to make a statement that The Pierre would do events at the highest level.

Schultze & Weaver, the architects of The Pierre, designed it as the first hotel with three lobbies to separate the guests from those coming to events. This was a major innovation at the time. You have a smaller residential lobby and larger lobbies for guests to pass through on their way to events.

Entertainment has always been at the core of The Pierre.

There was always entertainment from galas, ballroom events, weddings, supper clubs, to cabaret, to music and dancing and great food. The entertainment spaces at The Pierre have been redone three times and now it is Taj’s turn.

During pandemic, we took advantage of the down time to completely renovate the Grand Ballroom. The goal was to design a ballroom space to make the client shine and to maintain the original DNA of The Pierre—but make it relevant to today. Of all the assets in a ballroom—we always think our guests are the most important asset.

Following a multi-million-dollar renovation, we are looking forward to the reopening of the Grand Ballroom this Spring and returning The Pierre to its destination as the most sought-after event space in New York.

What do you think are the main challenges New York City hotels face today?

Today hotels are faced with unprecedented times. The Pierre has always faced challenges with aplomb. The hotel opened in 1930 during the height of Prohibition and celebrated its 90th anniversary during the height of Pandemic. During this time, the hotel needed to reimagine the future to ensure the best possible guest experience while also keeping the hotel safe for its residents, guests and employees. For a luxury property, many of the personal touches that make a fivestar hotel unique had to be rethought. Keeping the hotel profitable while maintaining the same level of service and hospitality that guests have come to expect is even more challenging as we emerge from recent events.

A PERSONAL APPROACH It’s this passion for the fine art of photography, coupled with his personal approach to his craft, which now sees Ron’s body of work exhibited at museums and galleries throughout the world. The Museum of Modern Art New York, the Tate Modern in London, and the Helmut Newton Foundation Museum of Photography in Berlin, among others, all maintain collections of his iconic works.

Ron’s insatiable passion has also given us his many highly-acclaimed photo-art books, including Disco Years, honored in 2006 by The New York Times. Soon after it was published, Ron transitioned to film with Smash His Camera, a documentary of his life and career by Oscarwinning director Leon Gast. The film premiered at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and received the Grand Jury Award for Directing in the U.S. Documentary category.

His latest book venture is 100 Iconic Photographs: A Retrospective by Ron Galella and features luminaries the likes of Elvis, Princess Diana, David Bowie, and Paul McCartney, in the spontaneous, off-guard style that only Ron could achieve.

I was recently honored to visit Ron to celebrate the launch of his latest book, the 50th anniversary of perhaps his best-known photograph Windblown Jackie, and his 90th birthday. It felt like memory lane for this magazine editor, who was just starting in the business at a celebrity magazine when she first encountered this expert lensman.

I’ll never forget his enthusiasm as he delivered the latest scoops of the celebrity world: Hollywood, New York, and points beyond landed on my desk. I often wondered if there were enough hours in the day for Ron Galella.

ENDLESS ENCOUNTERS Naturally, Ron’s visits to my office were highlighted with stories of hair-raising encounters with celebrities.

But, unlike today’s celebrity stalkers, he never went to apartments, always tried to remain unnoticed, never provoked stars—all resulting in the ultimate proof that he’s a different breed.While looking at the iconic works gracing his home, I considered how nothing ever really changes. For many of us, we’ll always be curious about the intimate lives of those in the public eye.

I sat down with Ron, reminiscing about the wild stories behind his most iconic shots, the beatings he took for his art, and what has changed since his golden age as a paparazzi. →

Tell us about your early years as a boy in the Williamsbridge section of the Bronx.

I was born the third of five children to my parents both of Italian heritage.

Life in our home on Oakley Street was full of surprises for the Galella children.

Though only twelve miles north of Manhattan, the days during the Depression-era Bronx were spent with my brothers and sister inventing games, exploring the countryside, and making mischief. My childhood was filled with watching actors and actresses on the silver screen, doing odd jobs around the neighborhood, and navigating a family life that was loud, antagonistic, and surprisingly permissive—an ideal breeding ground for the paparazzo I would become.

Did your family influence your career as a photographer?

Yes, my mom along with the U.S. Air Force. My mother instilled in me a love of the limelight: Though my brothers and sister were given traditional Italian names, she named me after the Academy Award–winning actor Ronald Colman (she had a thing for dark-haired men with English accents). In addition to raising five rambunctious children, Michelina adored cinema and took me to see many movies.

Tell us how the U.S. Air Force played a role in your career.

Rather than wait to be drafted into the Army, I enlisted in the Air Force. It would prove to be one of the best decisions I ever made. It’s where I learned the basics at the Air Force Photography and Camera Repair School. The planes—Boeing B-47 reconnaissance and strategic bombers—were all equipped with radar and photographic cameras in the bays. The film from these cameras had to be developed and replaced, requiring two or three sturdy camera technicians like myself. However, there were five of us assigned to the photo lab. Luckily, three volunteered and transferred to the flight operations. I happily remained in the photo lab as a photographer.

During your hey-day in the ‘70s and ‘80s what do you feel were your biggest challenges?

The free speech trial Galella v. Onassis resulted in a restraining order to keep me 50 yards (later changed to 25 feet) from Jackie.

I was found guilty of breaking this order four times and faced seven years in prison and a $120,000 fine; later settling for a $10,000 fine and surrendering my rights to photograph Jackie and her children.

Then came the worst day of my life! I was in Cuernavaca, Mexico to photograph the filming of Hammersmith Is Out, in which Peter Ustinov was directing Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. The movie was being shot at the Posada Jacarandas Hotel. The owner, Robert Quiroz, had invited me and authorized me to photograph the Burtons without their knowledge because he was interested in publicizing his hotel. Since Elizabeth and Richard knew me, I wore a Mexican disguise—a mustache and a sombrero hat—and posed as a hotel gardener, pushing a wheelbarrow that held my photo equipment.

Mr. Quiroz let me know that I’d need to hide before 5 pm somewhere around the pool, where Burton’s party scene was to be filmed. I chose to hide in a cave containing the pool pump, which would conceal the noise from my camera shutter.

Later, while the scene was being filmed, a crew member discovered me in the cave when he went to stop the pump because of the noise. Burton’s film crew took all my exposed and unexposed film from me, along with my hotel key. Then they held me while a crew member went to my hotel and took all fifteen rolls of exposed film I had there—over five hundred pictures from one week of shooting. →

After they released me, I went to my hotel and discovered the film missing. I went back to the film set to get my film. Three crew members came and greeted me with a punch to the mouth, breaking one of my teeth, a punch to the eye, and then kicking me causing me to fall to the ground.

The Mexican police who guarded the set finally stopped the violence and took one of the crew members and me to jail. I was finally released, along with the crew member. I went to the hospital with black eyes, a bloody nose, swollen lips, and that missing tooth.

When I returned to New York, I hired Los Angeles lawyers to sue the film company and the Burtons for $1.9 million. I lost this case because Mr. Quiroz did not want to admit that he had invited me to hide in the pool, so he never testified. Burton’s lawyers offered me $1,500 to settle the case, stating that Burton had nothing to do with the incident.

Then, there was the Marlon Brando sucker punch. It happened after a taping of The Dick Cavett Show. Both Cavett and Brando were headed down to Chinatown and I, and a fellow photographer, followed them. Once they reached the restaurant, Brando mumbled to me if there was anything else I wanted. I asked if I could get some photos without the sunglasses. Then it was a sock in the jaw. The next morning, I read that Brando was hospitalized because five of my teeth were imbedded in his knuckles. I sued him and won a $45,000 settlement.

How have you managed all the criticisms/assaults throughout the decades? Did you ever think that being a paparazzo was invasive or disrespectful?

I’ve been called the godfather of modern paparazzi. Many have disapproved of my work and process, while many others admired my work—like famed fashion designer Michael Kors, who coined the phrase “Galella Glamour.” Andy Warhol called me his favorite photographer. Whether you love me or hate me, my technique yielded intimate, unchoreographed images that could not have been crafted or set up by a PR or marketing team. I stand by my methods because they were the best ways to create authentic photographs by capturing celebrities in their natural environments. My purpose was not to punish my subjects. Far from it, I idolized them!

Although I proudly pioneered the paparazzo approach, I do not approve of the methods employed by the current crop of street photographers, and I even distanced myself from them as far back as 1992.

Did you ever consider a more conventional pathway such as a fashion photographer?

At the beginning of my career, I did not have the funds to open a studio. Living near Manhattan and knowing I could travel anywhere, the world became my studio as a freelance photographer. Most will agree that my greatest fashion photo is my Mona Lisa, Windblown Jackie.

So, tell us how you photographed the iconic Windblown Jackie.

It was a late afternoon in October 1971. I had just finished shooting portfolio shots for a model named Joy Smith, who lived on East 88th Street. A fool for beauty, I took pictures of Joy because I had nothing else to do—this was pro-bono work and the location was Central Park, directly across from Jackie’s apartment.

As Joy and I left the park, we caught a glimpse as Jackie was leaving her building. Keeping a measurable distance behind Jackie, Joy and I followed her along East 85th until Jackie turned on to Madison. →

I decided not to run in front of her because if I did, she’d recognize me. Instead, Joy and I hopped a cab and followed Jackie until we caught up with her between East 89th and 90th Streets. There, I rolled down the window and took two profile shots of Jackie walking. Then, the cabdriver honked his horn without me telling him! This was what Henri Cartier-Bresson, the father of modern photojournalism, called the decisive moment in photography.

I had to seize it. Jackie turned and I pressed the shutter release a third time, and that was the shot. Jackie about to walk across the street, no makeup, hair tousled, wearing jeans, glasses in her hand, and a light smile on her lips, her eyes gleaming.

Why do you think the public is captivated with celebrities and their lifestyles?

I believe we would all like to be famous. Most are likely to imagine themselves on the silver screen or on television. The life of a celebrity appears exciting, luxurious and to be famous seems appealing to most.

100 Iconic Photographs: A Retrospective by Ron Galella exemplifies your absolute best celebrity photos. Why did you select John Lennon and Mick Jagger to be the cover?

My top two selling photographs—John Lennon and Mick Jagger (front cover) and Windblown Jackie (back cover)—have one thing in common. The subjects were not aware they were being photographed.

The unguarded moment between two popular, legendary music icons caught in conversation, bathed in soft, diffused light, was captured using a 300mm lens. Mick, wearing a white tuxedo jacket, white scarf, and a carnation in his lapel pocket looking slightly down, and John, in a black tuxedo, looking at him in profile. THIS NEW YORK NATIVE TURNS UP WITH DEADPAN DELIVERY & AN EAGLE EYE ON ABSURDISM

here is nothing unmistakable about Pam Gaslow. The New York native’s droll humor, knife-edge prose, and blunt honesty has made her a literary star on the rise, as well as an up-andcoming comedian who slays the stage with the delivery that hovers between acidic wit and ironic self-reflection.

Her writing has spread like wildfire, from contributions to The Huffington Post and The Good Men Project to The Times of Israel and Newsbreak. A private collection of short works she wrote—The Poodlette Chronicles and Girls are Weird—put her on the map several years ago, as did her blog Depressed Hot Girl. Now, the writer is about to go big time with a comedic confessional so saucy you’ll have to keep reading to learn more.

“I have always been this way,” she says dryly. “I write what I know or from experience. Although I have a wild imagination, I prefer to pull from real-life experience because I love and believe the expression ‘you can’t make this *** up.’ People relate to and respect honesty and straightforwardness even though many people are afraid to express themselves that way. Someone recently told me I’m a combination of Dr. Ruth and Howard Stern.”

Gaslow’s odd humor and eventful life brought her to this moment. Raised in Hewlett Harbor on Long Island, she spent her young adult years on the Upper East Side, where her offbeat perspective and proclivities began to form.

“Growing up in New York exposed me to seeing way too much of everything because there simply is too much of everything,” she says. “It made me jaded, impossible to impress, and unable to be shocked. This does come through in my writing as I think I have that ‘nothing surprises me’ attitude. Not sure this is a good thing, but it’s just how I developed.”

What followed was an oddball collection of careers. She designed catalogs for J. Crew.

Performed stand-up. Gaslow even worked as Henri Bendel’s only female security guard (“I thought it would be sexy, cool, and glamorous,” but found it “boring, exhausting and completely uninteresting.”)

At the time, she chronicled her life on a blog. Her family threatened to disown her if she continued.

New York Lifestyles caught up with Gaslow to talk about her career, works, and the book whose title is so provocative we’ll only run it once!

Your book is gaining popularity for the humor and brutal honestly. Tell us more.

An emotionally frenzied memoir reveals addiction’s terrifying and lonely world. After a decade of sobriety, I relapsed into a life of dependency on marijuana, which nearly destroyed me. Don’t Bring Your Vibrator to Rehab is a raw portrait of me being held hostage by substance abuse. I was the twenty-four-hour defunct addict living without purpose and barely able to function. And while I was aware that pot wouldn’t kill me, I couldn’t feel more dead inside. Eventually, becoming sick from marijuana toxicity, I finally found the courage to seek treatment.

My journey in rehab is a journey from an entirely checked-out, lethargic, hopeless, and suicidally depressed pothead. It results in a sober woman with clarity and gratitude being told with honesty, intelligence, and a self-deprecating sense of humor.

How hard was it to write about this?

It was very easy to write about because I lived through it, and I didn’t need to embellish or try to make things up. I hope that my story will help others.

What did you learn from this experience?

Rehab made me realize that I never want to go back to rehab. It gave me a lot of awareness about how I treat myself and how I think about myself and that those negative perceptions were destructive thought patterns that needed to be changed. It all starts with our thinking. What we think we believe. Staying sober in and of itself is a positive for anyone’s self-esteem, so it all starts there for me. I learned to treat myself how I would treat others.

What do you love about New York?

It has anything and everything you can dream up. You want a cupcake from an ATM or a knock-off handbag or a fur pompom, you can find it. Everything is easily accessible and at most hours. Also, most people are smart, punctual, sophisticated, and on the ball. What I like least is the fall/winter weather and the insane battle and expense of getting around. I also hated living in a box with no outdoor space.

What’s next for you?

I will, of course, continue to write, explore, travel, and hopefully, be inspired by the absurd humor of life’s daily nonsense. I am contemplating authoring a book about the men in my life, so I apologize in advance if you’ve had the misfortune of affecting me to the point of needing to write about you.

I write what I know or from experience.

Although I have a wild imagination, I prefer to pull from real life…

We recently caught up with Dr. Robi Ludwig, the renowned psychotherapist, at her New York office for some inspiration and encouragement on this fulfilling journey. Additionally, Dr. Ludwig is an award-winning reporter, TV contributor, and author. Her Your Best Age Is Now: Embrace an Ageless Mindset, Reenergize Your Dreams and Live a Soul-Satisfying Life continue to inspire those of us who are searching for a fulfilling life. Are our relationships the secret to a happy, fulfilling life? Why not money or fame?

This is a great question, especially in today’s world where too much emphasis is placed on fame and money as a symbol of success. Both fame and money, while excellent, are ephemeral. It can come or go at any time. Fame and money get relegated to the backdrop of life.

Or worse, it is something which must be fought for to maintain.

This is especially true of fame and might be true for money as well.

There’s no escaping the self or the core issues we all must face.

What constitutes having a fulfilling and rewarding life?

It’s having loving people around you who accept and support you.

People who love you for who you are and who you are not. It’s having a connection to a purpose bigger than yourself. It’s striving for, achieving hard-won goals, and using your unique gifts in a purpose driven way. If money and fame are used to this end, that’s great! But the people who are happy find a method for living a meaningful life.

How can we maintain strong, healthy relationships?

To maintain strong and healthy relationships, you must nurture the people in your life. Show up during pivotal moments. Show the people you love that you love them. I would not be who I am today without the friends and family I have in my life. It’s important to root for your friends and your family. Think before you speak; this will increase the chance of your words landing constructively. Most importantly, listen. Active listening may be the ultimate way to show those we love and care about how important they are to us.

Like you, Dr. Ludwig, we also subscribe to self-care and the approach to focus on a work/life balance. So let us know how we can use meditation/mindfulness in our daily lives.

There is a fantastic book called Breath to Succeed. I recommend it to my patients all the time. In this book, author Sandy Abrams talks about breath as a free tool, available to everyone, wherever we go.

The word meditation can intimidate some because it’s considered a time-consuming activity. However, Sandy Abrams reveals how three breaths used the right way can transform moments of momentary chaos into an energy shift: positively impacting our mood, our outlook, and our sense of internal empowerment.

Work/life balance is a cultural concept that may do more harm than good. Living a balanced life is nuanced and challenging to achieve. The work/life balance looks more like juggling than balancing. It’s essential to learn how to set boundaries, say no when needed, and do the best you can with what you’ve chosen to do. If you can pay attention to those you love while attending to your goals and aspirations, you’re winning. Feeling overwhelmed is an unavoidable reality in the modern-day work/life balance conundrum.

Are there other ways we can practice making life less stressful and more manageable?

The best way to make life less stressful and more manageable is to make intentions. Life is stressful and unmanageable at times. And that’s all right. One strategy I advise my patients to do is to first check in with themselves. If you’re feeling overburdened or stressed out, the first step is to be aware. That’s where mindfulness comes in.

Then take a moment to plug into your experience. Ask yourself what you can take off your list now and what steps you need to take next?

When life gets overwhelming, it’s essential to know your limits, prioritize, and then take things one step at a time. I find making a to-do list and crossing items off my list tremendously helpful.

Success builds on success. Nothing feels better than crossing items off my list.

We also have noted that you advocate using color to help us feel more confident and attractive. Are there ways of using color to help soothe our minds and stay calm?

There is a lot of research supporting what happens when we see or connect with a color; our brains get stimulated. Color impacts us emotionally and sometimes physically.

Color therapy has been practiced in traditional therapeutic professions for years. Marketers and businesses have used color deliberately to help shift moods and buying patterns. Many yoga studios use greens and blues to induce a sense of Zen. Even prisons use pink-colored rooms to calm aggressive inmates.

When you understand the impact colors have on our mood, you can harness this information to create the desired atmosphere in your homes or help you feel confident with your various color choices.

Color is everywhere and can affect us in many ways.

How does it influence our decisions in choosing fashions, home décor, beauty products, etc.? Is there one color we should always have ready?

There are trendy colors out there influencing some of our choices. Specific colors are associated with inducing certain feelings and emotional states. For example, red is considered a high-energy, powerful color; it is also believed to signal courage, ambition, and strength.

Women wearing red describe feeling powerful. Men view women wearing red as sexier, too. So, it may be an excellent color to always have in the closet for all these varying reasons.

Yellow is a color associated with optimism, having a positive attitude, and mental clarity. Some think it’s even helpful for easing depression and promoting laughter.

When you want to feel brighter, dressing in yellow or having yellow accents in your environment couldn’t hurt. Blue is known to promote rest and calm. Some say it can even be used to ward off insomnia and promote deep sleep.

great getaway destination with a thriving arts scene, plenty of outdoor activities, an eclectic collection of shops, and a vast selection of restaurants—and less than a two-hour drive from NYC? Where is this place? Why it’s Beacon, New York.

The city’s origins date back to colonial times. There’s plenty to do in Beacon, New York. Here are just some of the highlights.

In the 1970s, the city experienced a severe economic decline, resulting in many factories and businesses being shut down.

In 2003, Beacon experienced an event that would bring about a much-needed resurgence. Dia Beacon, the museum for the Dia Art Foundation’s collection of art from the 1960s to the present, opened. The facility is housed in a former Nabisco box printing facility. With close to 300,000 square feet, it is one of the largest exhibition spaces in the country for modern and contemporary art.

• Stroll along mile-long Main Street to discover more art galleries and creative shops. Be sure to visit Hudson Beach Glass, a popular gallery and glass blowing demonstration studio offering workshops and classes. See what’s on tap at The Howland Cultural Center, housed in a magnificent Victorian building affectionately known as “The Jewel of Beacon.” This landmark building, erected in 1872, is on the National Register of Historic Places. Over 350 activities, including concerts, recitals, plays, poetry readings, coffeehouses, and art exhibits, are presented each year.

• With various antique shops and boutiques like Blackbird Attic and Vintage: Beacon, the city is a haven for vintage shoppers.

Also available is the free Beacon Loop Bus, which makes stops along Main Street and many other Beacon attractions.

• Like much of the Hudson Valley, Beacon and its surroundings offer a wealth of outdoor activities. Enthusiasts will enjoy a jaunt across the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge with a fabulous vantage of the Hudson River. Or hike the shore trails of Scenic Hudson’s Long Dock Park (great for sunsets) and past old factory ruins and waterfalls of Fishkill Creek in Madam Brett Park. Dennings Point Nature Preserve is also great for walking. More serious hikers can step up to the challenge of scaling the 1,650 feet of Mt. Beacon for a breathtaking view of the Hudson from the old fire tower at the top.

• Rent a bike and discover the many examples of Victorian architecture throughout Beacon. Or rent a kayak at Long Dock Park to explore the Hudson shoreline. Discover the ruins of Bannerman Castle, built in the early 1900s to store military surplus items. Guided walking tours and kayak tours of this island oddity are available.

After exploring Beacon, spend time at one of the oldest bars in town. Max’s on Main is a local favorite serving inventive American comfort food. Max’s is known for their great appetizers like WingsMain Street Style (a mix of hot and Teriyaki), Phamous Phish Tacos with beer-battered Alaskan white fish, and Chipolte mayo, and Pierogies. For an entrée, try Aunt Susie’s Marinated Flank Steak (marinated for 72 hours in Susie’s sweet soy maple glaze) or the Richie Havens Rice Bowl with Shrimp. Be sure to check out the cool Rock’ n Roll memorabilia adorning the walls.

Another local fav is Melzingah Tap House. PARADISE FOUND

THERE’S NO SHORTAGE OF LUXURY AT LAS VENTANAS

I am having this fabulous time in a dream, staying in this luxurious Mexican resort. My spacious villa, with a private infinity pool and hot tub, overlooks a garden and the sea beyond. No mini-bar for me. I have a maxi-bar on a side counter in the well-stocked kitchen, with top-shelf full liquor bottles, along with Champagne, Grey Goose vodka, and caviar chilling in the fridge Enrique, my personal butler, smoothly and quietly anticipates my every need and desire—and then some. I even find my toothbrush lined up with my toothpaste when I return from an evening of fine dining at one of the resort’s five eateries and bars and its nightclub. All this is after a sunset horseback ride along the beach. Oh, let’s not leave out the 90-minute full-body massage in the extensive health spa.

That, however, was no dream! I lived it recently, joining international billionaires and A-list celebrities at the ultra-luxurious Las Ventanas al Paraíso Resort in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Part of the Rosewood Hotels & Resorts global chain of luxury properties, Las Ventanas, does wrap you in a living fantasy of high-end living and pleasure.

If living well is the best revenge, this is the place to do it. Try as hard as I could, I couldn’t find any fault with the place. In fact, out of a possible five, I’d give it a six-plus—from accommodations, dining, personal service, and a variety of leisure activities.

TOPS IN CABO Since opening in 1997, Las Ventanas has been the top resort in Cabo, at the tip of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula, along the coast of the Sea of Cortez where it meets the Pacific, with 350 days of sunshine a year.

Picked up at the airport by the resort shuttle, I was met on arrival by Enrique, my exclusive butler for my stay, who escorted me to one of the resort’s luxurious two-bedroom villas. With his warm smile and friendliness, Enrique beat Mr. Carson, the imperious head butler from Downton Abbey, by miles.

The resort has 84 suites in a wide array of sizes and bedrooms and 12 villas, with prices starting around $1,200 or so a night, on up, three-night minimum stay. Suites have shared butlers to pamper and indulge guests, while each of the 12 villas has its own butler.

DAY & NIGHT FUN Of course, there’s more to just luxuriating in your villa’s private infinity pool and hot tub or the resort’s many pools. For guests, days are spent enjoying the natural riches of Los Cabos, including the sea, mountains, and desert; playing on the resort’s tennis courts and the many championship golf courses, and indulging at the spa; having drinks under the thatched palapas, and fresh fish at the Sea Grill; gazing at the nighttime stars through the telescope in their suite or enjoying the evening on their suite’s rooftop patio.”

Of course, the resort can also set up various other off-resort activities. That includes an adrenaline-pumping off-road ATV tour, following winding trails through dramatic terrains along the Sea of Cortez, ending with an epic crossing of the world’s longest wooden vehicle-pedestrian suspension bridge. Or a sunset horseback ride through the Los Cabos desert, providing a glimpse into the remote and untouched landscape of Baja Sur. Don’t overlook the sunset Champagne cruise aboard a 58-foot chartered yacht to the famous The Arch rock formation where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean.

Those who book at Las Ventanas between January and March get to see a spectacular show—the annual whale migration from the icy waters of Alaska south to the warm waters of the Sea of Cortez for their mating season.

Las Ventanas is also definitely the place for a romantic getaway, including a a marriage proposal or a special anniversary celebration. The resort has an entire department devoted to serving amorous guests, with an official Director of Romance and specialists who can arrange anything from private salsa lessons to couple’s spa treatments and beyond. “We can even arrange fireworks on the beach,” managing director Frederic Vidal told us. It is perfect for a marriage proposal or other romantic or celebratory moment.

WRAPPED IN LUXURY Have I mentioned the excellent service guests receive? My butler Enrique and all the staff seemed to genuinely enjoy serving guests.

“That’s a part of what we strive to achieve here,” General Manager Michael Chiche said. “From the moment they arrive, we want our guests to feel they are wrapped in comfort, service, and the warmth of the Mexican people.” Many returning guests, he added, ask for their same butler. “They become like family to them.”

If I seem a bit gaga over Las Ventanas, this longtime grizzled former tabloid journalist and world traveler may even be surprising himself.

But trust me, this resort is extremely worth the price for the luxury it delivers.

Do I hope to return? Well, let’s just say I’m going to start buying lottery tickets.

A FLOATING HOLIDAY TO 2 CITIES & 5 ISLANDS

It was a marvelous five-day adventure through the Croatian islands, starting from the historic port of Split and tracing a roundtrip course that added a bonus stop in the medieval city of Trogir. The Adriatic Sea was beautiful, and the pace was exactly right, with enough time to savor and explore.

Super-yacht Freedom from Goolets chartered yachts has raised the bar when it comes to luxurious crewed cruising.

With only eleven cabins, the cruise is a dream of luxury and indulgence. Captain Ivan, group directors Dominik and Ivan, and culinary-service team Tash, Toni, and Tomislav quickly became my new best friends as I embarked on a socially distanced, luxurious trip where the aim was relaxation and exploration.

SMOOTH WATERS Service is the watchword on the yacht. I merely mentioned that I wanted to have some crackers in my cabin for late-night snacking, and the next day a package of Pringles (written in Croatian) appeared. Did I want to try a flight of pošip or malvazija instead of a single glass of wine? No problem. Tash, the amazing I-can-do-everythingwith-no-hesitation server/host/coordinator, was there to make it happen. Was I looking for an after-dinner cordial? Toni and Tomi had it at the ready: a smooth herbal Travarica rakija that changed the way I thought about brandy forever. And Dominik and Captain Ivan kept the yacht on a steady course as we cruised along the Dalmatian Coast.

Breakfast buffets with fresh fruit, Pag island cheese, waffles and eggs; lunches of risotto (ni rižot), langoustines and pizza-like soparnik; and dinner extravaganzas with truffles, rack of lamb, seafood from any of the neighboring isles, and, of course, Croatian’s famous olive oil and wines were served with panache and simplicity.

The yacht matches service in thoughtfulness and luxe. Each of the spacious eleven cabins has a comfortable bed, oversized windows, a closet with safe, and a well-designed bathroom with a rain head shower or handheld.

Toiletries are from Rituals from the Netherlands, and other thoughtful touches include a Goolets after-sun moisturizer, outlets for both plugs and USBs, and a rain poncho. Hot water is plentiful, essential after a day of soaking up the Adriatic sun or swimming in the salty water.

5 ISLANDS In addition to swimming right off the back of the yacht, the cruise takes you to secluded and impossibly beautiful beaches like Stiniva, where a small tender or swimming yourself is your only means of access, or to the Blue Cave on Biševo island entered through the tiniest of openings. If you’ve seen Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, you might recognize some of the scenery.

Non-sailing scheduling took me to five of Croatia’s more than 1200 islands and islets. Within the circumference of the Split roundtrip, we first visited Brač, a gem of an island known for its gorgeous white-pebble Zlatni Rat beach and the town of Bol with numerous cafes and wine bars. Our second stop at Hvar, one of Croatia’s liveliest yachting destinations, offered a mix of a thirteenth-century fortress, a cathedral, and a beautiful shore lined with bars and cafes.

Finally, the celebrity-frequented Gariful restaurant was a dream for seafood lovers. A starter of octopus and oysters perfectly set the mood for the evening on the patio overlooking the harbor. There’s a reason Bon Jovi, Beyoncé, Demi Moore, and others love this place run by the humble Ivan Gospodnetic.

Next stop, I took a tour led by Lady Franceska, purported mistress of Marco Polo said to have been born and buried on the gorgeous island of Korčula. In Korčula’s Old Town, with its narrow stone-paved streets that lead to a privileged glimpse of the waterfront and a view of beautiful sunsets, I meandered through centuries of history regaled by tales of good and bad behaviors past.

My favorite of the islands was Vis, where scenes from the second Mamma Mia movie were filmed. You might recall Colin Firth crawling out a window in the beginning part of the movie in the coastal town of Komiža. An archeological tour best shows off the multi-faceted nature of this island. With Goran Spilski, I learned about the small-town character of Vis, where everyone knows everyone and where history is preserved with reverence. On this island, an abandoned World War II airfield is a reminder of Croatia’s former Yugoslavian history. It’s also close to a dramatic lookout peak for catching one of Croatia’s sky-filling, red-streaked sunsets.

Onboard, we celebrated our final gala evening, plotting out the remaining islands and towns still to visit, like Dubrovnik and nearby Mljet Island, and planning for a return cruise. Goolets owners Mitja and Alenka Mirtič were there to chime in. On this magical last night of yacht cruising, impromptu karaoke gave way to serious dancing under disco lights, a fitting precursor to the next day’s yoga and meditation sessions on the upper deck in preparation for our return to reality.

Time for a getaway? We agree it’s been a long haul these past two years. So now it’s time to break free, preferably on U.S. shores.

Now the next decision is where to go. Is a place perfect for adults or, if a family getaway is in the cards, likely to entertain the younger set? Rather than overcrowded beach resorts, or cramped city hotels, there’s Plum Guide, the luxe alternative to Airbnb for posh and private vacation homestays across the U.S. The British-based company is considered the Michelin Guide in home rentals, a premium answer to Airbnb and allows vacationers to book a safe, secure getaway at a private residence at the destination of their choice.

CALIFORNIA HERE WE COME We opted for Palm Springs, California, thinking the desert climate would warm chilled bones.

Instead, the two-bedroom mid-century bungalow dubbed Marilyn’s Kiss was elegant yet functional, and most importantly, it had a pool!

We loved the kitchen, spacious enough for all four of us, including our two teenaged kids. Cooking was fun for all in this sleek space with granite worktops and white cupboards.

The dining room was glamourous; it didn’t take much imagination to envision a movie star or two making an entrance, sitting elegantly on the emerald velvet chairs, and tapping pretty, painted toes on the vintage rugs. The tropical wallpaper in the master bedroom added a bright and playful touch to this already sunny ’50s style home. We also loved the open, airy quality of the space. After a day of hiking desert trails (more than 100 to choose from), rock climbing in Joshua Tree, and swimming in the pool, a soak in the master bath’s deep tub was welcome.

Styled like a retro retreat with its very own garden of Eden, the unconventionally shaped pool surrounded by lush trees became our favorite enclave. We spent afternoons lounging on the day beds, cooling off with a dip in the deep end as we savored the shade in the heat of the day. Hurry sundown, we thought as we enjoyed cozy nights by the fire pit with the terrace’s twinkling fairy lights transforming a casual vacation into a fantasy premiere.

CHECK IN TO DINE OUT SWEETBRIAR NYC

ryce Shuman’s cooking is on fire. The lauded chef has embraced his love of live-fire cooking to spectacular effect at new upscale American comfort food destination Sweetbriar. Last fall, Shuman opened his new restaurant in the Park South Hotel in what was once occupied

by Covina. He said the long search was worth finding the prime 100-seat location, as the kitchen setup allows him to fire away till his heart’s content. Charcoal grill, woodfired oven, and smoker are all used to produce one of the most exciting new menus of 2022.

Shuman, previously known for his inventive dishes at Eleven Madison Park and his Michelin-starred fare at now-shuttered Betony, turned back to basics during the pandemic and found a loyal following in the city. His humble barbecue popup and home delivery service, Ribs n Riesling, started with his young daughter’s suggestion. Her favorite meal is ribs, and she figured others would feel the same.

But, instead, it soon became a lifeline for locked-down New Yorkers craving comfort and sustenance, expanding quickly to employ three cooks and four drivers.

LIVE-FIRE COOKING Those same delicious Smoked Black Pepper Maple Duroc Ribs are on the menu at Sweetbriar, along with Shuman’s famous Cornbread with Honey Butter and Tangy Fresh Coleslaw. Former home-delivery clientele rushed to be amongst the first to dine in the restaurant.

Alongside seriously crave-worthy woodfired pizzas, try the Spicy Ham, Pickled Chili, and Honey or the Olive, Kale, Rosemary, and Parmesan. There’s a Grilled Short Rib large enough for two very hungry people, and a lighter Grilled Whole Branzino with Salsa Verde. The Smoked Half Chicken with Lemon Marmalade is simply delicious.

If New Year, New You-intentions have you focused on eating more greens, rejoice in the sheer deliciousness of Shuman’s vegetable-forward creations. Fire-Roasted Cabbage and a Beet Salad with Tumeric Yoghurt are definite stand-outs. Days later, I was still thinking about the Crispy Romanesco with Pickled Chili Mayonnaise.

Who knew there was a vegetable reminiscent of cauliflower-meets-broccoli? And who knew it could taste so good? I’m now a convert.

ENJOYED BY ALL Warm, confident service will please the grown-up clientele, with not an ounce of attitude on display. Sweetbriar’s broad appeal would suit a large family dinner, romantic date night, friends catch-up, or solo dining at the bar.

We loved the soundtrack, a mix of throwback songs and current hits that had us reaching for Shazam to answer the question, “What’s that song?” On the night we visited, the playlist included Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Wonder, and George Benson.

Starting this month, brunch and lunch plans will have come to fruition. Look out for the Sweetbriar house band, a group of Harlem-based musicians who will perform blues and more live on weekends. Book well in advance, if possible. If you can’t seize a table on Resy, try your luck for one of the walk-up seats at the bar for a prime view of comings and goings.

The restaurant is owned by Australian restaurateur Dean O’Neill who has assembled his creative team of executive chef, Caribbean native Kamal Hoyte, who has seen the kitchens of Le Bernadin, Daniel, and Oceana and acclaimed Slovenian pastry chef and cookbook author Alma Rekvic.

Oddly enough, O’Neill is an avionic engineer by trade who reveals, “I have designed and built various projects ranging from restaurants, nightclubs, apartments, boats, and planes. He went on to tell us that in 2003 he visited Slovenia to design and launch several projects.

“During this time, I fell in love with the place, people, culture, and food. Eight years ago, I opened my own business in Slovenia with a business partner, and we took over a 350-year-old bakery and turned it into eight boutique apartments. We called it the Pekarna boutique hotel.” The name stuck with O’Neill. Years later, and back in New York City, he searched for a new space to open a restaurant. “I came across 594-592 Amsterdam Avenue, and I saw enormous potential in the space.” And so Pekarna was born.

The affable owner pays attention to which dishes his regular diners prefer and tells us, “Wild Boar With Rice is our most popular dish along with the fries. Our Wild Boar is just so unique; we house smoke the meat over hickory wood for 18 hours, so it’s full of flavor.

Our fries are thick cut and soaked in water to get the starch out and then double fried, so they are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. We also pair the Wild Boar with three sauces which people enjoy. The Cauliflower Salad is also a favorite due to the unique flavors, including Calabrian chili peppers, almond sauce, sesame seeds, and scallions. Our Rack Of Lamb also is popular, and as people say, good lamb is hard to find.”

The American fare is just as delicious and includes some of the most tender steaks in the city. A STAR-STUDDED START TO BROADWAY 2022

While Broadway isn’t shutting down, last minute Covid-related postponements of individual shows will, unfortunately, remain part of NYC’s theater landscape in January and beyond. Be sure to check websites (below) for performance cancellations before heading to the theater and do have a back-up show or two on your must-see radar!

ith the last Champagne toast of 2021, a fait accompli, theater lovers are turning their attention to the biggest, brightest, most electrifying performance venue on the planet!

And as the New Year breaks ground, I can guarantee we’re looking at primo timing for scooping up tickets for Broadway’s most coveted current—and upcoming—musicals, comedies, dramas, and events!

ICONS

Ever since December came roaring in with a new pride of opening nights, the celeb count has been fierce, amping up Broadway’s marquee cred and fan fervor. And interestingly, the hottest names in town are all past Tony winners.

High on the list of these stage-savvy VIPs is Patti LuPone, whose turn as Joanne in the groundbreaking, partially re-gendered revival of Company is a show-stopping marvel. To watch her—embraced by a fluff of white fur toasting the ladies who lunch and wending her way to a standing ovation—is off-the-chart not to be missed, as is “Being Alive” sung by Katrina Lenk as Bobbie, no longer the male Bobby from the original.

Meanwhile, the teaming of screen and stage luminary Hugh Jackman and Broadway favorite Sutton Foster for The Music Man, has been serious buzz for over a year. This past December 20th marked the first preview with the official opening set for February 10th. Epic, of course, are Jackman’s “Trouble” and “Seventy-Six Trombones,” while Foster’s “Till There Was You” may well become a bit of a signature song, particularly on the talk-show circuit. As for Tonys, not only has director Jerry Zaks (who also directed this season’s Mrs. Doubtfire) picked up several, but four other cast members—Jefferson Mays, Jayne Houdyshell, Marie Mullen and Shuler Hensley—are also past winners.

Falling into the same preview ballpark as The Music Man (its first Broadway performance was 12/21), is Dominique Morisseau’s Skeleton Crew about works at an auto factory on the brink of collapse, starring Tony-winner Phylicia Rashad, directed by Ruben Santiago-Hudson, fresh off his acclaimed solo play Lackawanna Blues—and, yes, he’s taken home a Tony, too.

As for playwrights, let’s cut directly to two-time Pulitzer Prize-winner Lynn Nottage, whose fabulously limited run comedy Clyde’s bows out January 16th, while the big buzz musical MJ, for which she authored the book, will remain in previews until opening on February 1st.

Another non-musical, Aaron Sorkin’s acclaimed stage adaptation of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird welcomes Greg Kinnear as Atticus Finch on January 5th, replacing Jeff Daniels who originated the role in 2018. “There is nothing in the Greg Kinnear IMDb credits that you will find that will suggest that I am in any way an obvious choice for taking on this role,” Kinnear told The Associated Press. “This will all be a new endeavor for me. I welcome it and I’m thrilled about it.”

SCREAM R Speaking of franchises, it has been 26 years since the first Scream burst into the world’s nightmares. Which explains why these new filmmakers didn’t bother to produce a new name, even though it is a sequel starring many of the original players. Look for Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette back in their original roles; older, wiser, and making bank on the franchise that keeps on giving horror fans just the shivers they love.

GREAT LOVE, SCARY LOVE CYRANO PG-13 Peter Dinklage grabs hold of the lead role in Cyrano, in this adaptation of Edmond Rostand’s 1897 play written by Erica Schmidt (who is married to Dinklage in real life). Set in courtly times, the story still revolves around Cyrano’s unrequited love for Roxanne (Hailey Bennett). Directed by Joe Wright (Pride and Prejudice, Atonement), this fanciful tale had a limited December run for Oscar consideration.

DEEP WATER R Remember when Ben Affleck was dating Ana de Armas? This dark and scary (and erotic) love story brought them together in real life, too, but not for long. All you need to know is that it is directed by Adrian Lyne (9 1/2 Weeks, Fatal Attraction) and based on a Patricia Highsmith novel (The Talented Mr. Ripley, Strangers on a Train), to know that this one is going to be seriously twisted.

LICORICE PIZZA R Director Paul Thomas Anderson’s love letter to first love and life in the San Fernando Valley in 1973 had a limited Christmas Day release for awards consideration, with January being when it rolls out to theaters across America. It’s a quintessentially L.A. flick, as “older woman” Alana (she’s 25) and teenager Gary (he’s 15, going on 30) fall in love amidst a slightly surreal and frenetic backdrop that includes famed Hollywood characters from the time. Gary is played by Cooper Hoffman, Philip Seymour Hoffman’s son, in his first starring role.

KIDS CORNER BELLE PG The latest from Oscar-nominated animator Mamoru Hosoda (Mirai), Belle is all about a shy high-school girl who creates an alter ego for her social media, with somewhat shocking results.

The action-packed film is visually striking, warm-hearted, and socially relevant, presented in a way that adolescent kids can watch and come to understand that their future is in their own hands.

SESAME STREET Not yet rated In their latest movie adventure, the Sesame Street gang is plunged into a mystery when they suddenly cannot live in their neighborhood any longer. Big Bird, Oscar, and all our other favorite denizens of Sesame Street enlist the help of a history TV show host (Anne Hathaway) to find their way back to the place that kids, adults, and all our favorite characters used to know just how to get to—Sesame Street!

RETURNING TO THE PAST AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS PBS Phileas Fogg has returned, this time played by everyone’s favorite Doctor Who, the everversatile David Tennant, and he’s headed around the world on a bet once again in this latest iteration of Jules Verne’s ever-popular novel. Ibrahim Koma plays Fogg’s handy servant Passepartout, and Leonie Benesch takes on daring journalist (and now female character) Fix, who gives chase in this sumptuous eight-part PBS series that’s already been greenlit for season two.

1883 Paramount + Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan helms 1883, this prequel that goes back in time to explore the origins of that hugely popular Kevin Costner series.

Tim McGraw is the original Dutton who journeys across the Great Plains towards Montana to find his fortune, while Sam Elliott, Billy Bob Thornton, and Faith Hill round out the leading cast in this Western epic.

THE GILDED AGE HBO Downton Abbey lovers, rejoice!

Creator Julian Fellowes is back with another look at the wealthy aristocracy, set in America in the time of the robber barons of the late 19th century. Think Rockefellers and Carnegies when their fortunes rose, and the new millionaire class was being formed.

GRAND CREW NBC From the creators of Brooklyn Nine-Nine is this comedy of kooky Black Angelenos, who are all trying to figure out how to get ahead in today’s modern world. So, it’s only natural that they gather at a wine bar to hang out and figure out where life is going, right? Maya Lynne Robinson, Andrew Adams, Anna Jailer, Aaron Colom, and Adam Foster Ballard lead the friends.

SOMEBODY SOMEWHERE HBO Comedian-crooner Bridget Everett created and stars in this new HBO comedy centering around her character of Sam, a Kansas gal whose hometown roots keep her grounded but make her a bit crazy as well. She’s not what people think she’s supposed to be, which leads to some droll situations as she makes her way through Middle America’s inherent weirdness.

The good news is she finds other simpatico outsiders along the way to finding her place in a world that doesn’t quite fit.

elf-confidence is a luxury; it isn’t ubiquitous, and it can be challenging to achieve. This is the experience of Daisy Jing, CEO, and founder of Banish. This acne-centric skincare brand has built a vast audience across social media platforms by addressing the primary skincare concern of teens and young adults.

MY NEW YORK STORY KEN JEWELL: A VALUABLE GEM

en Jewell is the first resort for many couples seeking to end their marriage or simply define or redefine the terms. His honors are many (Leader in Law

“I see the divorce process as an opportunity for a fresh start,” says the attorney, who heads Jewell Law, PLLC as its managing partner. “I prefer that my role as a matrimonial lawyer facilitate and help our clients find solutions that work for them while maximizing their assets with which they embark on their new life.”

Jewell has run his New York City firm for more than 15 years, and during that time, has risen to the top of his profession. New York Lifestyles talked with him about his field, expertise, and his storied career.

What brought you into matrimony law?

I fell into it as these were the cases that came in when I first struck out on my own. I originally planned to get a Ph.D. in psychology, but it didn’t fit me as well as I thought as I proceeded through undergraduate. I was a law librarian and decided to move on to law school. Matrimonial law combines my psychology background with the law and has made for a very satisfying career.

What are some misconceptions people have about this area of law?

I think the biggest misconception that people have is that no one realizes that when a marriage occurs, two legal units of one become one legal unit of two. Thus, each spouse has a 100 percent right to marital property, including home, wages, earnings, cars, kids, etc. There is no denying the spouse of financial means or the kids except in extenuating circumstances. To be sure, legally speaking, marriage means that both spouses take legal and fiscal responsibility for each other.

How do you deal with the stress you see every day?

I don’t take it personally. I look at what is driving the responses and how I can set the client’s expectation so that it is consistent with the law to resolve the issue and move forward. I employ empathy in handling client matters because that is how I can move clients from positions they don’t want to move from.

What would you tell someone getting married to think of first?

Ask themselves if they love the person they are marrying and, more importantly, why they love them. If it is about looks or financial security, that won’t lead to a successful marriage. Then why should it be about that special something that only the fiancé/fiancée can do that turns them on. Marriages are hard. There are good times and challenging times. What gets those through the tough times is that special something that reminds them why they are in love and married the person they did.

What’s the most challenging part of the job?

How do you console clients? What’s your philosophy/approach?

They are setting expectations with a client who has unrealistic goals. People believe that the money they earn is theirs, and they don’t have to share it with their spouse during the marriage or in a divorce. There generally is a sense of righteousness that needs to be mitigated no matter the circumstances, something that would shock the conscience of a court; everything must be divided.

It is never about me but instead explaining what is going on legally, so the client understands why a result occurs one way or the other.

We often avoid adverse effects by setting expectations that change based on how the events unfold. To be understanding, empathic, and psychologically aware helps me address the client’s emotions to resolve the client’s concerns and move forward to the next step in the process.

he Prostate Cancer Foundation’s (PCF) 25th Annual New York Dinner took place at the Plaza Hotel in New York City to highlight the innovative research it is currently funding and to commemorate the millions raised and accomplishments made over the previous quartercentury by PCF.

Michael Milken’s charitable organization is dedicated to identifying and funding groundbreaking cancer research programs. The memorable evening brought together medical leaders, top research scientists, business leaders, and prominent New York City socialites.

The event raised more than $6 million.

Fortunately, The New York Center for Children (NYCC), founded in 1995 with the support of late Broadway producer Marty Richards and philanthropist Georgette Mosbacher, is a child-friendly center that provides free, comprehensive evaluation and therapy services to victims of child abuse and their families. In addition, the NYCC offers professional training in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of child abuse. Individual and group therapy services are available at NYCC in English and Spanish.
