RING IN THE NEW YEAR

nother year is upon us. Isn’t it amazing? Yet, I’m hopeful that 2023 will bring us peace, happiness, and joy.

It feels like just yesterday that I was embarking on the launch of New York Lifestyles. That was eight years ago, and I had no idea how it would be received. But today, I’m able to look back on this past year with deep gratitude. You, our NYLM community, are the ones who helped us make this magazine what it is today. Thank you!

In this issue, we spotlight three incredible women. Karen Ballou is the founder and CEO of Immunocologie. The company has revolutionized the skincare industry using natural ingredients, including French green clay. Read her story and be inspired.

Then Leesa Rowland shared how devoting a little time to connecting with our inner selves and incorporating this magnetic quality into our personality can have untold benefits on our lives.

Look for Marilyn Hoffman, a top real estate agent in the country, and be amazed at her latest luxury properties. Some of her clients are the movers and shakers who consistently reach out to her for choice homes nationwide.

Of course, we also feature our lineup of travel, real estate, Broadway, and interesting profiles on New Yorkers you need to know.

As we look ahead to this new year, I’m excited about what 2023 has in store. You have continually emailed us your likes (and dislikes) that inspire, entertain and inform. Happy New Year to you and your loved ones.

KAREN BALLOU

HER NATURAL APPROACH TO HEALTHY SKIN WHATEVER YOUR AGE

Many skincare brand founders let others do the talking while they focus on formulating. But for Immunocologie’s Karen Ballou, she enjoys both. As a result, you’ll often find Karen appearing nationwide at health, wellness, and beauty events sharing tips and positive messages with her growing loyal followers.

This founder/CEO realizes that the skincare market can be full of empty promises. Today, consumers are intelligent and want to know that the ingredients they’ll use on their skin are naturally derived. They care about their health and well-being and wish to avoid the synthetically derived overload of chemicals encountered every day. Not a day goes by that Karen does not receive questions from those who want to understand what it is they’re putting on their face and body and how it all works. For that reason, Immunocologie products are formulated based on the skin as a living organ. It needs nutrients to thrive.

Beauty brands often find their roots in their founders’ backstories, from how they discovered skincare to relieve the skin woes that plagued them over the years. Immunocologie is no different. In 2008, Karen was diagnosed with cancer. During treatment, she found it a necessity to care for her skin due to adverse reactions to drug therapies. Her background as an esthetician and developing skincare products for 30 years at top companies eventually led to her current career as the head of Immunocologie—with an emphasis on natural.

And so Immunocologie was launched in 2014.

New York Lifestyles Magazine met with Karen Ballou recently to learn more about this fascinating woman and what she sees for the future.

Tell us a bit more about yourself and your background. From a young age, I knew I wanted to help people. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to be a doctor or nurse, but I envisioned being a doer. Skin became a real passion from spending time with my grandmother during her skincare routines which led to being interested in the cosmetic industry and having a natural knack for chemistry. From mixing my first perfume kit or concocting my grandmother’s oils, I loved formulating and working with my hands.

So, instead of becoming a doctor, I became a pioneer in the cosmetic and aesthetic industry, where I started my career in beauty with Elizabeth Arden and then onto Redken. Following this, I trained as a master esthetician. I opened a school in Atlanta, Georgia, and my first spa in Chicago, Illinois, and began consulting for major skincare brands and bringing innovation to the market. As life continued, I had four children and continued developing products, which I call soil-to-seed and seed-to-market.

Fourteen years ago, I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, and much to my surprise, it was the beginning of my intense work of looking at the ingredients I was putting on and, in my body. Something a lot of us don’t think about. But because I was working on a new project with French green clay, it was recommended that it would be a great source to use during my chemo treatment. It wasn’t until I was in remission and was feeling better that my immune system was in a healthy state. I was ready for my next journey. This was when Immunocologie was born, which means studying the skin’s immunity. The products we use support natural immunity, giving the best skin results.

Were there other changes you made after being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma?

After my diagnosis, I began with a naturopathic doctor; it changed my life and way of looking at how I lived. Finally, I could fine-tune my habits to support my health and not take what I was doing for granted. I always ask, “is it good for me?” Eating better, sleeping, and exercising are now life-long habits that I partake in every day to keep me at my best.

What is the importance of French green clay used in all Immunocologie products?

When I was diagnosed, I was already working with an ethnobotanist on a project containing French green clay. We were using clay water within the clay products and found that its properties are antiinflammatory, antibacterial, and antimicrobial. It was most effective on the largest organ in our body, the skin. The discovery gave me the knowledge and understanding of how we can treat the skin’s microbiome naturally and have a delivery system.

Immunocologie uses this mineral-based delivery system founded from French green clay, creating an ionic exchange that brings energy to our skin cells and has a multitude of uses, including purifying, detoxing, and hydrating while supporting healthy skin naturally. The most important thing about French green clay is that it’s the best of all Earth clays and has 12 essential minerals that are imperative for the health and detox of the skin.

Tell us how clay is used and whether there are other vital ingredients.

Most people believe all clays are alike. However, there is a distinction between different clays and their minerals. For example, the French green clay, also known as Montmorillonite, combines lava, and bentonite. Immunocologie means the study of the skin’s immunity, but also that skin health is health. We use this clay to support our brand purpose of the best ingredients for beauty from the outside, combined with our other plant-based ingredients that support the skin.

| NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 17

Immunocologie’s mission is healthy skin over anti-aging. Why did you decide to formulate products in this manner?

Aging comes from inflammation in the body. We all will age, but it’s how well we will age. The one thing that is key to this is that French green clay is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. So, adding the ionic exchange clay water makes for a more substantial visible difference with skin. This is a powerful story for people to understand that what they put on their skin goes into their bodies. Therefore, we know our Immuncologie ingredients are healthy for our bodies.

Describe a typical Karen Ballou wellness routine.

It’s about getting up and having a routine of health. My number one routine is exercising, whether a little bit or a lot. It can vary; sometimes, I work with trainers or may take phone calls on the treadmill. Every day I have celery juice with different ingredients, or hot water, to start the day feeling enriched in the mind, body, and soul is what’s essential for me. Plus, a little bit of wine doesn’t hurt later.

What would you say to consumers who haven’t tried natural skincare? It’s necessary. We are in a time where we need to have healthy bodies and minds for today, tomorrow, and the future. The fact that the skin is the body,s largest organ has been lost in beauty. We follow trends and often use guesswork for our skin. Beauty has always been about the newest/ latest/being beautiful. Consumers should focus on buying products that support the health of the body and skin—not what’s on trend.

Do you have one favorite Immunocologie product?

While I love our products, my all-time favorites are the  Super 7 Elixir, Vital Ionic Mist, and Clay Mask. I can’t live without my clay water! So, I use the Clay Mask as a cleanser and scrub.

What’s the future of natural skincare?

Natural skincare is here to stay and has only become better and better. Immunocologie is a step above and has a delivery system to allow our body to utilize those healthy ingredients for the glowing, radiant skin we all look to have. I say, “why can’t natural be a luxury, and why can’t luxury be luxuriously natural?”

What are your plans for the brand?

I plan to reach everyone I can to help them in their journey of skin wellness. As a cancer survivor, the people I can share Immunocologie with, the more I know I’m helping to change their lives and how they care for skin. I am passionate about supporting oncology programs and developing routines for those undergoing cancer treatments or any health issues with immunity-supporting skincare.

What is your idea of a perfect day?

A perfect day is creating positivity throughout the day, leading to positive results. It’s what I’ve always been about. Why be sad when you can smile!

LEESA ROWLAND

DISCOVERING THE POWER WITHIN

Most acclaimed actresses have impressive backgrounds. But few are as beautiful and wideranging as cult film star and philanthropist Leesa Rowland. The daughter of an artist and college professor, Leesa grew up in Austin, Texas, where she studied broadcast journalism and later became a classically trained actress at the world-renowned Stella Adler Studio in Los Angeles.

Shortly after graduation, she quickly gained a following, being cast as Victoria in Troma Entertainment’s 1992 cult film classic, Class of Nuke ‘Em High Parts 2 and 3 and appearing in the sequel Return To Nuke ‘Em High, which aired on The Starz Network in 2013. In 1994 she acted in Troma’s television USA Network series Troma’s Edge along with Lloyd Kaufman and Debbie Rochon. Then, in 2012, she co-starred in Travis Campbell’s  Slaughter Daughter as the eccentric mother who drives her daughter to insanity. The film won for best feature at Orlando’s 7th Annual Freak Show Film Festival that year. In addition, it led to a co-starring role in the critically acclaimed web series Two City Girls and appearances on the Oxygen reality series Jersey Couture in 2012.

Beyond her extensive career and credits as a film and television actress, Leesa is the acclaimed author of two best-selling selfhelp/motivational books  Discovering the It Factor within You: Developing Your Charismatic Personality, published in 2015. Her second book describes embracing individuality, discovering authenticity, and empowering yourself.  The Charisma Factor: Unlock the Secrets of Magnetic Charm and Personal Influence in Your Life has catapulted Leesa as a popular author and influencer. The book describes charisma as an unseen but powerful force that makes us unique and sets us apart from the rest of the crowd. It is something we all possess—whether you know it or not.

CONNECTING IS HER SECRET

She believes devoting a little time to connecting with our inner selves, learning what makes us truly special, and incorporating this magnetic quality into our personality can have untold benefits on our lives.  The Charisma Factor is a guide that unlocks the mysterious formula for charm. Whether you live in the spotlight or are a college graduate just starting a career, Leesa’s ideas and advice will improve communication and interaction with others with valuable lessons and personal tips. She said, “I want to help people become the best they can be. One of the chapters in my book that’s especially strong is about different charismatic personalities, their traits, and their magnetism. It’s like a behavior study.”

She is also well-known as a philanthropist and animal activist. This dynamic woman is the president of the New York non-profit group Animal Ashram, which she founded in 2013. As a resolute vegan, Leesa says, “Life is full of choices and living a cruelty-free life is the best choice I have ever made. There is plenty to eat without eating animals. My choice is compassion. It is always in fashion.”

New York Lifestyles wanted to learn more about this fascinating woman. And, like us, you’ll soon agree that Leesa Rowland possesses lots of style.

JANUARY 2023 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 21

Tell us what has been the most memorable experience in film/television and why?

I worked on a film in 2001 in Orlando called The Bros I co-starred with Joey Fatone, Dennis Scott, Ludacris, Arielle Kebbel, Shaquille O’Neal, Carrot Top, Cindy Margolis, and Vanilla Ice. We had a fun group of people to work with! The best part, though, was I went to walk the dogs at the local shelter while I was there in Orlando, and I came back with a cat named Moo. The cat became the love of my life, and I would never have met him had I not acted in that movie.

What inspired you to write two motivational books? I want to share my story and help guide others as they embark on their journeys and cross the crossroads of unfavorable or blocked conditions. I have navigated through many tough and challenging times and have always found a way to keep a positive outlook essential to attaining and retaining peace of mind. In addition, I want to share my tips and secrets.

Do most people possess charisma? How can we seek it and use it in everyday life?

We all possess charisma. We only need to discover it within ourselves by figuring out what motivates us and what we love to do. Then, when you do what you love, charisma will shine through you.

The premise of your book,  Charisma Factor, is intriguing in that you bond charisma with karma. Explain this concept. Everything we do has a consequence. If you act to help others, you bring good karma to yourself. Good things then start happening to you. When good things happen to you, your mood and frequency rise, and you naturally become charismatic.

As an animal rights advocate and president of the New York non-profit Animal Ashram, tell us more about the organization and why you founded it. I began in the animal rights movement in the early 90s with Last Chance for Animals in Los Angeles. We worked against vivisection, which is experimentation on live animals, pet breeding, and factory farming. I started Animal Ashram to continue doing this work and more in New York City. We also rescue dogs and cats from the kill shelters, such as the NYC ACC Animal Care and Control shelters in the tri-state area. New York City does not have room to take in all the stray, abused, and abandoned animals, so they have an extremely high euthanasia rate. We work through the night to place the ones at the most risk.

Speaking of Animal Ashram, what do you want to accomplish this year?

I am manifesting a fabulous physical location for a rescue center. We have always kept the dogs and cats with fosters, but we could save many more lives if we had a state-of-the-art cageless, comfortable shelter. We have been looking at places in New York City and Long Island.

You have been a vegan all your life. Why did you make this choice?

I grew up in Texas, where my uncle had a cattle ranch. I would get to know the cows, and they would disappear. I learned they were sent to slaughter, and I have never eaten meat since. I love all animals and will never eat them.

How would you define your style? Where do you find inspiration?

I love classical designs, but I love adding fun or whimsical flair to things. I have a polished style, yet I love to play with fabrics, colors, shapes, and textures. I love glamour, vibrant color, and sexy silhouettes. And the unexpected! Every day to me is a special occasion!

Where will we find Leesa Rowland in five years?

I will spend my days caring for animals at a stateof-the-art cageless no-kill shelter and healing center, doing yoga, acting, spending time with friends, and writing about spirituality.

How do you juggle your life, Leesa, and maintain a balance?

I prefer to concentrate on one big project at a time, so I can always give my all to everything I do. I have strong self-discipline and always place my work before my pleasure. That way, I can relax without feeling guilty.

What three words best describe you? I am optimistic, passionate, and compassionate.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Never concern yourself with the opinions of others.

What would you be doing if you weren’t an actress/author/animal activist?

I am doing what I love and can’t envision doing anything else.

Lastly, what is your secret to staying beautiful? You are most beautiful when you are grateful for what you have.

Paradise is calling and awaiting your arrival…

DON HERSHMAN

EXHIBITS

Award-winning artist Don Hershman continued to carry out his successful assemblage of exhibitions with a showcase that premiered during Art Basel Miami 2022 and who sold a significant proportion of the works on display at the Red Dot Art Fair.

Taking over walls during Florida’s Red Dot Art Fair, the storied halls of the beloved ArT LoVe GaLLerY were the home of the new works entitled ‘Shadow Series.’

SHADOWS ARE KEY

For the past 25 years, Hershman’s use of shadows has always been a component of his paintings, but it wasn’t until the early part of 2022 when the ArT LoVe GaLLerY owner, Jackie Fuchs, prompted him to focus on this subject for a new exhibit keenly. A past show in July 2022 entitled “Sexuality and Shadows” was successful and inspirational for the acclaimed San Franciscobased artist.

“Once the show closed, I felt compelled to take the subject of shadows even further,” said Hershman. “People often think of shadows as a metaphor, suppressed trauma, impending doom, or ominous dark magic. In this new series of 14 paintings for Red Dot, I attempted to steer the concept of shadows into a practice of healing and self-growth, moving the viewer to a place of compassion and surrender.”

Red Dot Miami is a curated gallery-only contemporary art fair during Miami Art Week. Hershman’s work was proudly a part of 75 of the top galleries from around the world showcasing work, including Provincetown’s famed ArT LoVe GaLLerY. At the iconic Mana Wynwood in the heart of the thriving Wynwood Arts District and running alongside sister fair Spectrum Miami, Red Dot offers the unique opportunity to connect with blue-chip galleries and emerging artists under one roof.

Hershman displayed 14 new paintings with the ‘Shadow Series’ during the fair, which ran last month at Mana Wynwood. Titles on display included “Dog With Shadow,” “Tulips,” “Bicycle,” as well as “Man Leaning.” The new artwork on display showcased a celebration of life and the grand meaning witnessed in ordinary everyday things as they are transposed with their reflection in a shadow.

THE WINNING ARTIST

Hershman was fresh off the heels of multiple American exhibits, from a sold-out show in Manhattan to displays in Dallas and Palm Springs, took on a unique look at the male images with other subjects such as a dog in the desert, tulips, or a desk with shadow.

Bringing his last work to the landmark ArT LoVe GaLLerY was a dream come true and a mission long in the making. Ever since his career took flight during the 2021 Salomon Gallery New York exhibit of original pieces that were part of a retrospective series inspired by the late Victor Arimondi, the innovative Hershman has been on an upward trajectory and become part of several collector’s wish lists.

He has since gone on to win the 2020 Jury Selection at the de Young Museum and top recognition in the 2022 MvVO ART/AD art show, which saw his work displayed in the famous Oculus in Manhattan.

D’YAN FOREST

STILL DOING IT HER WAY

Seeing D’yan Forest’s cabaret act is not for the faint of heart. The 88-year-old comedian and author is no stranger to “mature themes” that, while never vulgar, would shock most Americans. Forest, who’s performed worldwide, splits her time between Paris and New York, where she delivers the most hilarious cabaret shows either city has seen in some time.

Forest grew up a nice Jewish girl from Boston, only to run away to France, where she indulged in countless romances, eventually partnering with a former nun for 25 years. She’s had day jobs teaching basketball, piano, and sex education and recounted her life in the 2021 I Did It My Ways. The book describes this stand-up comedian’s life journey from Boston to Paris—and beyond.

MODERN TIMES

Forest made her way from Boston to Paris in the 1960s after a divorce. “I got through the divorce, then my parents asked, ‘What now?’ I told them, ‘I’m going to Paris.’” Paris in the sixties was as far from Boston as you could imagine. The city’s atmosphere was defined by its unabashed embracing of modern sexual philosophy. Women were galvanized by Simone de Beauvoir’s theories of female empowerment. “It was anything goes!” says Forest.

Decades passed and when Forest eventually returned to the US, she had acquired a French accent. Everyone thought she was French born. “There’s not one drop of French blood in me. It’s all Russian, Latvian, and whatever, but I made a career being a French chanteuse. Being French-ish, I always had work in cocktail lounges where I established myself as a singer,” says Forest. “But I also sang in nine other languages, so if they had an Italian event at a golf club or something with a Jewish band, I would do it!”

COMEDY WAS IT

Forest has been singing and performing since she was ten years old. “I started learning stand-up comedy eventually.” She recalls once going to a club years ago with only 15 people in the audience. “I’d never done comedy onstage before. Then for five minutes, I used my ukulele for a parody of Thank Heaven for Senior Sex, and that was it. When I saw people laugh, I couldn’t believe it. By my third joke, I was hooked.” Forest added, “This was the year after 9/11. So, I started working in comedy when we needed the laughs.”

Forest is looking forward to following up her 2022 show Swinging on the Seine with a new cabaret act for 2023 in Paris and New York City. She says, “Nobody can believe an 88-year-old is saying what I say about what went on in my life. It works because they know I’m a little embarrassed about what I’m saying, and let’s face it, I am. I’m a pure Bostonian. But this is the comedy that works.”

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS EDITION

When it comes to the first month of the New Year, lavishing some love on your inner sanctum isn’t so much a splurge as it is sealing the deal on a fresh start. And because adding something new/unique/amazing to your home signals optimism, January gets my vote as the perfect time to defy whatever irrational weather lurks outside with a few astute interior perks

BIG, BETTER, BODACIOUS

Post-holidays and the word on the street is “storage.” And why settle for bulky bins and shape-shifting garbage bags when you can stash and carry? SCOUT’s versatile 4 Boys Bag Extra-Large Tote redefines super-sized (24”Wx19”Hx12”D) and heavy-duty, including sturdy 9” shoulder straps for conveying stuff galore to wherever. HEADSPACE

My erratic downstairs neighbor has been known to slam doors in the middle of the night. Car alarms go off at 1 am. Dogs bark. It’s New York, I get it. But I do need sleep. And suddenly, there’s Soli Pillow, liberating me from external noise through wrap-around memory foam and cushioned speakers. Contoured to support my head and neck as Adele or a soothing waterfall lulls me into a Midwinter Night’s Dream, Soli is the whole slumber package. Info: solipillow.com

Plump and porcelain with an extra-fine tea infuser, this little pot steeped its way into my heart and to the joys of a “smashing cuppa.” Info: marktwendell.com

THE LEXUS LC-500

From the outside in, the Lexus LC-500 is a beautiful thing. It’s the sort of sport car that makes both men and women stop and admire it from the outside, especially if you’re driving one the color of “Cadmium Orange,” for that paint seems to glow with an inner power. Expect complete strangers to stop you in a random parking lot and valets to simply drool as you hand over the keys to this sporty two-seater (there’s technically a back seat, suited only for very small children) with a 471-horsepower, 5.0 V8 engine.

This Lexus growls when you punch the throttle, music to the ears of every sports car lover; and as it takes off on the highway, the standard 20-inch, ten-spoke cast alloy wheels grip the tarmac like a glove. Sleek and quiet inside, you’ll be going 100 mph in a flash and not even feel it in the LC-500, proving this isn’t a vehicle to be taken lightly. Powerful and muscular, it’s the kind of car that can get you into trouble if you’re not paying attention!

A DRIVER’S DREAM

The interior is beautiful as well, although the gear shifter— which is an automatic, not a stick—leaves something to be desired in its ease of use. But that’s a minor complaint, as the rest of the interior is a bit of a driver’s dream. With high-basked sport seats, you really feel like you are in a “cockpit,” which is what the people at Lexus call this interior. The LC-500 is low slung, adding to your feel for the road, yet comfortably cocooned. The console has all the features that define a luxury car, from a large navigation system to a powerful sound system that allows you to create your own listening experience, be it the all-news AM radio station or hip-hop playing 24/7 on SiriusXM.

Of course, with a sticker price that hovers around $100,000 depending on what features you choose, safety is a key part of the Lexus design. We love the blind spot monitor pop up on the side mirrors, and happily did not deploy the pre-collision system that features pedestrian detection. That feature just might come in handy on a busy city street, as do the rear backup camera and the warning images. Eight airbags are hidden throughout, helping ensure that even if you do happen to hit something despite the car’s best efforts to warn you, you should walk away unscathed. And for those that find parallel parking the bane to existence, this sports car will take over with “Intuitive Parking Assist” to help ease itself into that space.

The LC-500 can also be built right to your specifications, with the Lexus Bespoke Build program. Choose your favorite 20- or 21-inch wheels, add a speed-activated rear wing, choose a glass roof with a sunshade; those are just some of the build options that allow personal customization. But no matter if you create your own unique vehicle or simply go to the showroom and pick out the one that strikes your fancy, there’s one thing that will remain the same: the Lexus LC-500 is a seriously cool car to enjoy.

HARRYS LONDON

STEPPING INTO A NEW YEAR

Recently at the New York flagship store, recently named Creative Director Graeme Fidler and well-wishers came together to celebrate contemporary British footwear and accessories brand Harrys of London which has been rebranded and renamed Harrys London. As the brand’s consulting creative director as of 2021, Fidler aims to add more comfort and practicality to the stylish shoes.

THE EARLY YEARS

Fidler is a graduate of North Umbria University. He trained as a designer in England, and subsequently worked at several companies, including Polo Ralph Lauren in New York, as the design director at Aquascutum, and the creative director at Bally. He launched a menswear brand called Several in 2014 and worked on the Aspen Ski School collaboration with executive Read Worth. Fidler’s first collection is Harrys London’s Autumn/Winter 2022 collection.

Britain has long had a reputation for designing and manufacturing some of the most classic, high-quality men’s footwear in the world. While a few venerable brands have trickled across the pond to New York, it is a fashion necessity which has been long overdue for an overhaul. Enter this contemporary British footwear brand, which has engineered a revolution in men’s footwear. “Harrys London is headed in a new direction, and we are excited that Graeme will lead this growth and revitalized vision for the brand,” said Charles S. Cohen, Harrys’ chair, in a statement.

The change in name comes after the revolutionary men’s shoe brand has expanded globally, following the opening of their New York City flagship store in 2019.

A NEW LOOK

The new rebranding aims to make the brand’s name and logo more easily accessible across shops, shoes, and social media. The new, simplified logo of the brand is also in line with the new rename, adding a modern touch to the historic shoe brand that has been in steady business since 2001.

Celebrating the new look included Clo Cohen, menswear influencer Bryan Griffin, Steven Beltrami, Naomi Lawson, stylist Nolan Meader, Sydney Sadick, Romy Chan, menswear stylist Chiun Kai Shih, designer Peter Som, Nadja Sayej, George Wayne, James Reginato, interior designer Philip Gorivan, Patrick Moxey, Mike Carver, Naeem Delbridge, Byrdie Bell, Scott Buccheit, Christian Leone, Emma Snowden-Jones, Jaerez.

PENNSYLVANIA

It’s time to shift your winter into high gear and plan your incredible Pennsylvania ski vacation to where else but the Poconos. With a history dating back to 1946, when the mountains welcomed the first commercial ski area in Pennsylvania and perfected the art of snowmaking, the Poconos have become a bona fide ski destination. Today, the Poconos have it all—beginner slopes to the double black diamonds and terrain parks to test your skills. So, get out and experience the exhilaration when your skis start sliding down a Pocono slope. For more information on the Pocono Mountains, visit poconomountains.com

CAMELBACK MOUNTAIN

Vertical Rise, 2,133 feet

If you ski just one place in Pennsylvania, Camelback must be it. Most resorts along this gentle mountain range in Northeastern Pennsylvania describe runs as “great for beginners” or “family friendly.” Camelback is indeed that, but it also has trails that appeal to expert skiers. It can even make a high volume of snow and has two terrain parks and two half-pipes. For non-skiers, the sizeable snow-tubing park is a pleasing alternative.

The ski day at Camelback is long—starting as early as 7:30 in the morning and going late into the night, with every trail capable of being lit. Best of all, it’s less than 90 miles from New York City. The resort’s base lodge is a great place to get your après ski started. Friday through Sunday, live bands play crowd-pleasing covers for the happy masses downing the macro-brews on tap.

As we all know, some ski and those who don’t. If you fall into the latter camp and have never vacationed at a ski lodge, then you’ve been missing out. Camelback Mountain Resort affords non-ski activities, including zip-lining over snow-covered mountains and treetop, and an indoor water park. VERMONT

It’s the king of New England skiing, with more major ski resorts than any other Eastern state. There are a few ways to make the most of a ski getaway here. For starters, with so many resorts in such a small state, it’s effortless to ski more than one in a single trip. And nearby resorts offer interchangeable lift tickets. Also, to get the most bang for your buck, go where the skiing best suits your ability. Southern Vermont areas (Okemo) lean toward intermediate cruising terrain, while northern resorts (Stowe) offer more advanced and expert skiers. In the middle is Killington, the biggest of all, with plenty to interest skiers of every ability. For more information on Ski Vermont, visit skivermont.com

KILLINGTON

Vertical Rise: 3,050 feet

This sprawling property offers snow-packed trails that weave around the Green Mountains and promise the most thrilling downhill skiing this side of the Mississippi. Dubbed the “Beast of the East,” it lives up to its name: It’s the biggest resort covering seven mountains and an excellent variety of terrain. A good reason of devoted skiers who keep it as lively after hours as they do during the day. It also demonstrates that the beast is still an absolute beauty of a mountain. Beginners can trail off on Pico Peak and Rams Head Mountain while speed demons rip down Killington Peak.

OKEMO

Vertical Rise: 2,200 feet

Well-traveled skiers will enjoy the excellent grooming and quality of the white stuff, which has made this southcentral a favorite. High-powered snow guns cover 96 percent of trails that span the resort’s five mountains— with terrain equally divided among novice, intermediate and advanced levels. So, there’s something for everyone (including acrobatic boarders, who can perform tricks on six terrain parks and a 500-foot-long superpipe). And those looking for more of a cardio workout should include a few hours on the extensive network of sweat-inducing trails, manicured especially for Nordic skiing and snowshoeing.

STOWE

Vertical Rise: 2,360 feet

Don’t let the luxury hotels and vacation homes distract you—this mountain is no joke. Located on the face of Vermont’s highest summit, Mount Mansfield, Stowe has some of the most challenging runs on the East Coast. While the most famous trails are the legendary Front Four—National, Liftline, Goat, and Starr—Stowe also has access to the best-unmarked tree skiing in the east. Stowe is as close to a traditional European resort as it gets in the eastern United States

F AVORITE BAY LODGE... AN ESCAPE LIKE NO OTHER EXPERIENCE TO REMEMBER FOR A LIFETIME!

QUEEN MARY 2

In an era where time is an ever-decreasing commodity, travel has become a more athletic, competitive exercise – the pressure to see the key sights, try to secure the best dining tables, and always remain in contact with family, friends, and work 24/7.

Solution: A cruise. But not just any cruise. A Transatlantic cruise on the Queen Mary 2 is a one-of-a-kind experience. If you consider the price of a business or first-class ticket on an aircraft, you get the ability to sleep a little on a reclining flat-bed seat for a couple of hours, eat a meal from a tray, have a quick breakfast, and then stagger away to try and cope with the jetlag.

With careful planning for a similar cost, you can have your cabin with a full bed and bathroom, three meals a day (at least), and entertainment. Then freedom to enjoy the world’s most extensive afloat library or movies on a television in your room for seven days while your body clock gradually transitions to the new time zone. One travel tip: Your mobile phone will likely not sync time zone changes as the ship changes zones separate from geography. It’s best to carry a separate watch or bedside clock set to ship’s time not to miss activities—or dinner. And let’s not forget there Is no weight restriction on luggage should you have over-indulged in retail or be traveling with presents for all the family.

TIME TO DECOMPRESS

The seven days proceed quickly, given all there is to do, and the ship does not impart a cramped feel due to its spaciousness. The main dining room has a three-story (at least) vaunted ceiling and plenty of space between tables. The time the trip takes also allows you the opportunity to decompress from the pressures of modern life, get rest, and be disconnected, with the freedom to think. Though there is wireless Internet connectivity, expect it to be slower than if you are home.

Need to refine your exercise regime? The onboard Mareel Wellness & Beauty offers a full menu of treatments plus fitness classes and trainers to kick-start change. This can also be helpful as the Transatlantic route has no port visit—again, something which can seem odd to a passenger who has taken a more typical cruise visiting islands day after day. However, no ports of call coupled with copious amounts of fresh ocean air tend to make the stomach rumble more regularly—time to dine.

Another misperception is that dining is limited to one big hall with thousands of passengers eating at an unappetizing buffet elbow to elbow.

That is closer to the modern airline experience, with the  Queen Mary 2 having dining options ranging from a leading restaurant— the Britannia Dining Room—to other options, including the King’s Court buffet constantly refreshed day and night and then specialty dining such as at the onboard Pub, the Golden Lion, the Piazza, and a high-end restaurant experience,  Steakhouse at The Verandah. In addition, passengers paying for access to the  Britannia Club, Princess, or Queens Grill can enjoy a more rarified dining experience in a clubby environment.

The ultimate misconception of Queen Mary 2 is that she is solely a bucket list travel experience. Yet, this unique ship is relevant in a world where we’ve sometimes lost the notion of relaxing and enjoying ourselves.

A WHOLE NEW WORLD

WHERE TO GO IN 2023

Welcome to 2023! We’ve finally arrived at a calmer world where travelers are increasingly flocking to international destinations once again. Yes, we will continue to pack masks and hand sanitizer, but put your paranoia in the backseat. Today, travel has a new meaning. For many, it’s a feeling of forfeited time and an urgency to make plans. But with all that lost time have come plenty of luxurious opportunities and the realization that we may need to do it right from the beginning. It’s not a bucket list challenge. More important, it is an experience that encourages travelers to reevaluate where to spend some valuable time. With that in mind, consider the world open to exploring, savoring, and enjoying. Whether you celebrate tradition, relish the great outdoors, burn with exotic desires, or bask in the sun, your dream awaits.

BAHAMAS

A short flight from Miami lies 700 islands known as The Bahamas. Touch down on Nassau/ Paradise Island, and you’re just minutes away from spectacular Cable Beach and a vast array of watersports. In the funky capital of Nassau, you can dive into some great duty-free shopping, then clip-clop in a horse-drawn buggy through the town’s charming, narrow streets. Are you feeling lucky? Check out the casinos that dot the island. This is just the beginning: Go island-hopping. Grand Bahama Island has miles of beaches and tours for the eco-minded.

SCOTLAND

Centuries-old castles, legendary lochs (lakes), and fields of heather give Scotland a timeless feeling. All this, plus the world’s best golf and hundreds of off-shore islands, make this a dream. For adventurous types, head to the Highlands to gasp in awe at sapphire-hued lakes (including Loch Ness), emerald glens, and craggy coastline. Be sure to take time to hop on a ferry for the remote Shetland Islands. It’s the perfect escape for anyone who loves nothing more than a sweater, nature, and whisky. Check out Eshaness—take the lighthouse road for a walk north to the Holes of Scraada, and you’ll stumble upon surreal scenery. Or hike up the rugged path to Shetland’s highest point up Hermaness Hill and take in the brilliant view of Muckle Flugga, a natural reserve. Later, dine on fresh salmon, lamb, fish and chips, and fish pie. You can’t go wrong. Of course, don’t leave Scotland without trying your athleticism on the golf greens. The game was born here, and even amateurs can chip and slice their way across greens, including the venerable St. Andrews.

SWITZERLAND

Are you a nature buff? You’d be hard-pressed to find a country with more natural beauty than Switzerland. Indeed, the hills are alive every spring and summer with blooming wildflowers, perfect for a leisurely hike and picnic. In winter, curl up by the fire in your cozy chalet nestled in a charming ski resort in the Alps. Base yourself in a lovely village that fronts Lake Geneva stretching from Montreux to Geneva, with 65 beaches along its 55 miles of lakeshore. You’ll love the Swiss-style pleasures of staying along this Swiss Riviera. One day hop aboard one of Lake Geneva’s luxurious lake steamers. Sit on the deck, order some bubbly, and watch the passing scene as it unfolds. Looming over it all are the majestic snowdraped peaks of the Alps. Don’t leave without scooping up some Swiss chocolates.

50 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JANUARY 2023 TRAVEL

PORTUGAL

Once upon a time, this regal country was known for its explorers who set out to conquer the world; now, the world is reciprocating and discovering Portugal’s sunny beaches, archaeological artifacts, vibrant culture, and a treasure trove of artistic wonders. Start in Lisbon’s Alfama district, where 15th- and 16th-century houses tell of the city’s Moorish past. Then, twirl along the narrow alleyways, and you’ll find yourselves scampering down a staircase to discover the threshold of a hidden cafe. Next, along the Tagus River is the attractive historic area of Belem, where you’ll find the Jeronimos Monastery and a vast complex of museums. Next, head west to the Estoril Coast, where you can laze on the beach, play a few rounds of golf during the day, and then gamble all night at the famous casino.

GERMANY

Welcome to Berlin, Europe’s fast-paced, continuously changing, perpetually vibrant, and always exciting city. Here’s a city that offers it all. Pop into one of the city’s upscale boutiques, or for more intense retail therapy, head to KaDeWe, where you’ll find everything and anything your heart desires. Take advantage of the food delights of the sixth floor, varieties of wines, and 1,200 kinds of sausages and cold meats: for retro retail, the Mitte or Kreuzberg districts for ‘70s style bric-a-brac. Of course, no visit to Berlin would be complete without a trip to Potsdam, the Brandenburg state capital, a short distance away. The UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site welcomes visitors where living history can be found at every turn. Potsdam’s beautifully restored city center and magnificent gardens are worth the trip. Night owls will surely take the U-Bahn (Berlin’s subway system) that will whip them to Hackescher Markt, the nerve center of the city’s nonstop nightlife, where the partying goes on until dawn.

MOROCCO

It’s truly a feast for the senses. Just imagine the moon rising behind a fernfringed grove of palm trees, sleeping under a vast array of stars in the Sahara Desert, or dining in a pink-tile palace with rose petals scattered about your feet. This North African country tempts and delivers. Start in Rabat, about an hour from Casablanca. Here you’ll find the Necropolis of Chellah, the site of the ruins of the ancient cemetery, reached through a massive gateway built by 14th-century sultans. Gardens thick with jasmine, mimosa, almond, and orange trees lead to Roman ruins and the tombs of several sultans. Also worth a look is the Kabah of the Oudayas, which dates from the 13th century. A kasbah is a fortress, and this one, like hundreds of others that dot the countryside, was built by a local ruler and surrounded by his subjects’ homes. The Oudaya Gate, a massive archway of reddishgold stone embellished with serpentine motifs, provides entry to a narrow quarter of cobblestone streets lined with whitewashed houses and shops. Don’t miss the oldest mosque in the city is right on the main thoroughfare.

TAHITI

If you had to use just one word to describe Tahiti, it would be sensual. Imagine languorous midday massages with luscious vanilla or gingerscented oil, fragrant leis of frangipani and orchids, king-sized beds strewn with hibiscus, blossoms of every color; refreshing gulps of coconut water straight from the shell; and delicate raw fish marinated in lime juice and coconut milk. Tahiti and her islands have a charisma that enchants returning visitors as much as it seduces first-timers. The islands are scattered over an area of brilliant blue Pacific the size of Western Europe. And though all this exotic beauty exists on one of the planet’s most remote archipelagos, it’s still only an eight-hour flight from Los Angeles. Of the five main island groups, Bora Bora may be the most beautiful in the world. The warm, shallow waters are the perfect place to try out newly acquired diving skills alongside curious turtles and a kaleidoscope of tropical fish.

COSTA RICA

Mother Nature runs the show in the rainforest of this Central American eco-playground. Your wake-up call will be a flock of green macaws bickering with mischievous howler monkey, a volcanic steam bath at the base of rumbling Mt. Arenal, and your room service a juicy mango plucked just hours ago. Costa Rica is one of the world’s hottest eco-tourism destinations, with more than a quarter of its land protected in national parks and reserves. From the capital, San Jose, you can rent a Jeep (you’ll need it on those bumpy roads) and snake your way northwest to the Monteverde Cloud Forest, a lush tropical reserve. Take a guided tour and be amazed at the colorful toucans and monarch butterflies. Remember, the dress code is as laid-back as the people, so bring hiking boots.

AUSTRALIA

Those seeking a far-off and exotic locale where the vocabulary is reassuringly familiar make a visit Down Under a must-do. Not many countries can boast of having one of the world’s oldest rainforests (the Daintree), its largest coral reef (the Great Barrier Reef), and the enormous monolith (Uluru). Mix in incredible Aussie charisma and a roster of luxury retreats, and you’ve got one very enticing getaway. Australia is a big land (it takes 14 to 20 hours to get there!), so focus on what you love and want to do. Divers should undoubtedly plunge into the Great Barrier Reef.

VIETNAM

Traveling in Vietnam is an adventure: Crowded city streets can feel overwhelming, back country roads are virtually nonexistent, and the heat is constant. However, the country’s famous sites, including Buddhist temples, and French colonial architecture, make it all worthwhile. The French influence is everywhere in Hanoi, and you’ll find some of the best baguettes outside Paris! The countryside is lush and green, and you’re rewarded with the sight of ancient temples looming out of forests, traditional fishing villages along the South China Sea, and intimate yet diverse cities like Hoi An, one of the country’s most vital trading ports. Today, this stunningly beautiful city mixes Chinese, Japanese, and French influences. You can easily cover the entire city on foot and stop for tours of some of the city’s oldest homes and temples. Then wander about the markets and ride on a sampan—a traditional flatbottom wooden boat.

THAILAND

Here is a destination for anyone searching for serenity, spirituality, and exotic wonders. Think monks in saffroncolored robes, gold and jade Buddhas sitting in gilt-domed temples decorated with gold and mosaics, topped with shimmering spires; orchids that grow like wildflowers, and everywhere the scent of spices and flowers. These are all vivid images of a lovely corner of the world known as “The Land of Smiles.” Begin your visit in bustling Bangkok, the capital, where three-wheeled tuk-tuk (taxis) jockey for road space along with cars, bicycles, motorcycles, and sidewalks are crowded with street vendors hawking foods both familiar and exotic. For a complete experience, venture beyond Bangkok. In Chiang Mai, take a tour in a chauffeured tuktuk and explore the city and the Tribal Museum, which tells the stories of the various hill tribes living along the border between Thailand and Laos. Chiang Mai is also home to numerous stellar Buddhist temples, including the 14thcentury Wat Prabhat Doi Suthep, on a hill overlooking the city. End your stay in Thailand with a few relaxing days in Phuket in one of its ultra-luxurious resorts. Spend days wandering the powder-soft beaches and nights counting the twinkling stars.

52 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JANUARY 2023

KENYA

Better known as the birthplace of the safari Kenya is where tribal village tours, game drives in the Maasai Mara during the annual migration, and flights over the rolling Ngong Hills best deliver an Out of Africa experience. Pop open bubbly on the banks of the Mara and toast the zebras as they attempt a river crossing. A safari to Africa is the ultimate experience—and most will customize an itinerary to fit your needs. For first-timers, the Big Five will also include a visit to Amboseli—most noted for its abundant and well-protected elephant population sheltered by Mt. Kilimanjaro. Once accustomed to the wilderness, you’ll treasure days spent viewing lions in their habitat. On this trip, no effort is spared in making wilderness life as cozy as possible, with large, comfortable luxurious lodges and walk-in tents. The tents even have elevated terraces, with canvas chairs for taking in the beautiful views.

IRELAND

Painted storefronts, tidy rows of Georgian-style townhouses, and plenty of parks make it easy on the eyes, while cultural sights liberate the soul. But Dublin’s best asset is the people: warm, good-natured, and always ready to share a laugh. Traditionalists should head west to the remote Aran Islands, where life is simple, and locals still speak Gaelic Irish, one of the few places in Ireland where it’s still spoken. You’ll stumble upon fairytale castles, historic lighthouses, churches, and pretty harbors. Take time to head west by car or rail for a visit to the Aran Islands. Once there, rent bicycles to explore the grassy lanes that show the islands’ beauty. Inés Meain is the quietest of the three islands, and you’ll want to visit a local knitting factory for a genuine Irish sweater. Inis Mor is the largest of the three; see Dun Aengus, a historic, semi-circular stone fort, one of the largest in Western Europe. Inis Mor is idyllic for sunning on sandy strands, and you’ll also want to take a guided walking tour to learn about the island’s culture and traditions.

GREECE

A visit to the Greek island of Santorini should be on the top of your list. The Aegean gem in the southern Cyclades has wooed poets and artists for centuries to be inspired in its scattered seaside villages. The island’s capital, Fira, is built onto the magical Caldera cliffs, as are many sugar-white homes and blue-domed churches. The beaches are long stretches of striking black sand (Kamari Beach is remarkable). Next, visit off-the-beaten-path Oia, at the top of Santorini’s northern coast, to discover art galleries, fish taverns, glorified sea captain’s houses, and stirring sunsets. Also, explore the local vineyards and savor this divine destination.

TURKEY

Turkish Delight may be the name of the national sweet, but it could describe the entire country: It bridges Europe and Asia and is packed with history and natural beauty; if you want sand, and bronze away on the Aegean or Black Sea coasts, with more miles of beach than any other Mediterranean country. For culture, head for Istanbul, with its mosques and Grand Bazaar; Ephesus, where you can wander Roman ruins; or Troy, where you can make like Helen. And don’t overlook the bacchanalian delights: Turkish food overflows with flavor—juicy lamb, tangy olives, and eggplant served 101 ways. Plus, the raki (a liqueur) will knock your socks off.

OCEAN CASINO RESORT

IT’S GAME ON

Apopular game, for years, drove players to toss a pair of dice and move their tokens around a square board accumulating properties, paying fines, receiving revenue, building structures, and even landing in jail. It added names and phrases to the cultural lexicon such as community chest, luxury tax, free parking, and water works. It spurred arguments concerning who would assume the role of the banker, how much money would each player get, and how to properly pronounce “Reading Railroad.” (pronounced red-ding).

The street names within the game became as familiar as Main Street USA, from humble Baltic Avenue to exclusive Boardwalk. Whether buying St. James Place or Oriental Avenue, players thought more about winning the game than about which city was its inspiration. The small white dice have been replaced by the computerized voice of a GPS as it governs one’s path along the streets of Atlantic City, New Jersey.

A GOOD BET

Atlantic City is in the process of defining itself as more than just a gambling destination. Yet it is still the slots, the cards and roulette wheels, and the new sports betting craze that fills the hotels and casinos with the hedonistic pulse of competition. Atlantic City, as its name suggests, rests right on the Atlantic Ocean with a 180-degree view of the great blue expanse. The tallest building in Atlantic City, understandably with the best ocean view, is none other than Ocean Casino Resort.

Bigger isn’t always better, and quality over quantity is often the safer bet, yet Ocean boasts both scenarios. With 61 stories and a height of 735 feet, Ocean is a regal monolith whose structure allows for each of its 1399 guest rooms to attain an ocean view resulting in a 360-degree viewing experience. The completeness of the visual splendor is paralleled by the signature fish tank in the lobby by the check-in areas. Guests can sit and observe a 360-degree view of the many species of fish circling their curated paradise.

Once checked in, the guests can move on to their own curated paradise which includes comfortable and stylish accommodations, top-notch gaming experiences, an ample selection of fine dining and casual eating venues, and entertainment choices that range from an indoor/outdoor pool, full spa, Top Golf interactive games and of course bars of all energy levels.

WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE

Throughout most of the hotel, the theme of ocean extends like a wave floating eager vacationers from one thrill to the next via aquatic suggestions. The carpet design of circular shapes and tendrils reminds one of jellyfish, while the suspended structures from the cathedral-like ceiling create an undersea aura, as if all guests are immersed in a hedonistic aquarium.

Accommodations The rooms continue the watery metaphor through colors and textures, cool tones reflecting the art on the walls and nature’s canvas through the floor to ceiling windows looking out to the vast sea. Every room has an ocean view, a plush mattress that might inspire dreams of tranquil floating, and a spa-like walk-in shower.

Fine dining Ocean Casino Resort offers its guests three delicious options:

· Amada A rustic-chic, tapas style restaurant which brings Chef Garces’ unique creations to the table where sharing and interacting is encouraged. Great cuisine, once again, becomes the glue between people and cultures. Recommendation: start with Piquillos Rellenos (crab stuffed peppers) and Vieires (Diver Scallops) as a main course. Finish off the meal with Crema Catalana (Spanish Creme Brulee) for a sweet completion.

· American Cut Voted Best Steakhouse in Casino Player Magazine (2021 & 2022), American Cut features a raw bar, wet-aged steaks, surf and turf, and classic American sides. An appetizer of Wagyu Meatballs and a main course of Pastrami Rub North Atlantic Salmon will ready all diners for the frenetic night ahead in the casino.

· Dolce Mare This dining option brings the flavors of Italy right to the New Jersey shore. The meal begins with Focaccia bread and a garlic butter and honey dipping spread. An appetizer of Calamari is the perfect opening act for spaghetti and meatballs, which is raised to the level of gourmet, accompanied by Creamy Polenta. Top it off with Tiramisu, served with succulent raspberries and chocolate drizzled on the plate.

Casual dining is as wonderful as fine dining and chosen by low and high rollers alike. Serendipity 3 is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and still offers its classic frozen hot chocolate. Makai puts a Hawaiian spin on otherwise standard fare. Try the Miso Glazed Grouper. Distrito Taco Truck brings the food truck experience right near the casino floor.

Speaking of the casino floor, there’s something about the buzzes, murmurs and occasional cacophony of the gaming arena that sets the heart pumping. With nearly 2000 slot machines, 125 table games, and a sports betting gallery in which one can wager on nearly every major competition, Ocean Casino Resort and its 130,000 square feet of gaming space is a virtual sea of excitement and possibility.

Whether win or lose, guests can take in a live show with top name celebrities, belly up to the bar at one of several themed establishments, or do some souvenir shopping along the galleria. Outside the resort, walking along the iconic Atlantic City Boardwalk and underrated beachfront, which spans six miles, is a wonderful way to both burn off the calories and forget the losses as well as take in the scenery and celebrate the victories.

Ocean’s loyalty program gives incentives for visitors to return repeatedly. In fact, the vastness of space requires multiple visits. They may not gift you $200 for passing Go, but no matter the outcome, the safest bet for travelers to Atlantic City is a stay and entertainment experience at Ocean Casino Resort.

PALM SPRINGS

A VISIT TO THE WILD SIDE

Palm Springs has always had a reputation as the “capital of desert cool.” From its popularity with the rich and famous to its unique blend of mid-century modern design, the city has long attracted visitors to come and bask in the warmth of its desert. Golf is a major draw (more than 100 courses in the Greater Palm Springs region), and relaxing spa hideaways abound. But the Greater Palm Springs area offers some of the best opportunities beyond the golf links and inviting pools. Get out into the desert and mountains of the Coachella Valley and experience this unique area’s natural beauty, fascinating history, and geological significance.

One of the most popular attractions in the area is the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. Featuring the world’s most significant rotating tram cars—which give riders a 360-degree view of Chino Canyon during the 10-minute, twoand-a-half-mile ascent. The tram brings you to the Alpine wilderness of the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument. During the climb, you pass through five unique life zones, from the Mexican Sonoran Desert to an Alpine Forest.

Up top, at over 8,500 feet of elevation, you will be rewarded with stunning views of Palm Springs and the spreading Coachella Valley. Climb the stairs to Grubbs View for a 360-degree view of the valley and mountaintop wilderness. Next, explore Mt. San Jacinto State Park, which has over 50 miles of hiking trails. An excellent trail to explore is the Desert View Trail, which offers beautiful views from various lookout points. Finally, the Mountain Station has two restaurants, a cocktail lounge, and different viewing decks.

A DESERT TREASURE

A must-see is Joshua Tree National Park. With 800,000 acres of mystical beauty, Joshua Tree National Park is one of the world’s most incredible natural desert treasures. The park combines two desert ecosystems: the Mojave Desert and the Colorado Desert. A notable feature of the higher and cooler Mojave Desert section is the many collections of bare rock, often broken up into huge, stacked boulders and granite monoliths. These intriguing rock formations, constantly surrounded by the wild-armed Joshua trees, create an otherworldly landscape, making for some great hiking, exploring, and a favorite activity for many visitors—rock climbing.

Although much of the park’s scenic beauty can be experienced while driving, be sure to take the time to stop at several attractions and hike the trails, some of the spots not to be missed include Arch Rock, Cap Rock, Skull Rock, the Discovery Trail, Keys View, and the Cholla Cactus Garden. Here are other highlights.

The San Andreas Fault  A terrific way to experience the natural beauty of the desert and learn about the history of the area’s indigenous people and the significance of the famed Andreas Fault is with a Red Jeep Tour with Desert Adventures. The San Andreas Fault Jeep Tour took us into the center of the fault zone located at Desert Adventures’ privately owned Metate Ranch Preserve. Our guide took us through a maze of narrow canyons. We had the opportunity to take a short hike into slot canyons to explore this rugged environment further. We also visited and learned about one of the natural desert oases of California Fan Palms fed with clear water bubbling up through cracks formed by the fault line.

Earthquake Canyon If you like to bike ride but don’t like hills, you’ll love the Earthquake Canyon Express Bicycle Adventure with Big Wheel Tours. This 20-mile tour descends 1,200 feet through the San Andreas Fault zone on a paved road to the heart of grape country near Mecca. There are no crossroads, no turns, and extraordinarily little traffic. Our guide was always with us, following in his van. At various spots in the canyon, he would have us pull over to explain some of the geological or natural significance of what we were seeing. Big Wheel Tours offers a variety of bike, Jeep, and SUV tours and bike rentals.

Indigenous Lands  The Agua Caliente Indian Reservation offers excellent hiking trails at Indian Canyons and Tahquitz Canyon. The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians has made these canyons and other locations in the Palm Springs area their home since immemorial. An abundant water supply from the immense underground aquifer allowed the Agua Caliente to thrive in the harsh desert environment.

Two of the most popular trails are Palm Canyon and Andreas Canyon. Both trails wind their way through magnificent oases of indigenous California Fan Palms—standing in stunning contrast to the barren desert.

Living Desert Zoo/Gardens Another opportunity to experience the area’s wild side is visiting the Living Desert Zoo/Gardens. Located in the Palm Desert, Living Desert offers a beautiful array of animals housed in humane, expansive habitats. Some of our favorite exhibits were the black rhinos, the giraffes (you can purchase lettuce to feed these gentle giants by hand), and the Australian wallabies, where you walk freely among these friendly guys from Down Under. Various interactive activities and informative “keeper connections” are presented each day. Living Desert is more than a zoo.

Enjoy the serenity of the many themed desert gardens or explore some of the more than 1,200 acres of Sonoran Desert on one of the park’s hiking trails. Info: visitgreaterpalmsprings.com; red-jeep.com; bwbtours.com

MINDIE’S MUSINGS

OVERCOMING SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER

uthor and motivational speaker Mindie Barnett answers your questions about life, navigating these stressful and uncertain times, while steering you down a more straightforward path.

We welcome your questions and invite you to reach out to Mindie at mindiesmusings1@gmail.com.

Dear Mindie, Where to start? I feel so stressed and anxious this time of year. Between the long hours of darkness, colder air, and the stress of dealing with family functions, it just makes me want to crawl into my bed and stay there until Spring! I know what I’m feeling is not that unusual, especially for me, but this year I feel down. I don’t know what to do, and it’s just the beginning of the season!

Sincerely, SAD Dear SAD, I hear you! What you are feeling is perfectly normal. However, the winter cold, lack of daylight, and spending more time indoors, as a result, can make you feel isolated. It’s downright debilitating, especially if you are prone to feeling anxious when life becomes overwhelming.  I’d like you to consider the level of anxiety and possibly depression you are feeling. If you find yourself unmotivated to tackle daily tasks and socialize, you should consider seeking a licensed therapist. In doing so, they can better gauge the stress and angst you’re feeling and help you develop concrete coping strategies, among other crucial psychological support.

On a holistic level, I recommend reframing your thoughts. Instead of focusing on the negative impact of social responsibilities, financial strains, more commitments with family, and the downside of having shorter days, try to concentrate on the positives. I promise you there are some! Cheerful music, delicious food, a relaxed work schedule (for most), and the time to catch up and reconnect with friends and family more profoundly. Even the shorter days can yield some uplifting elements: snuggling with a cozy blanket and watching a movie or reading a good book, picking up a hobby to occupy your time indoors, or tackling any home improvements you have wanted to do.

I also believe it’s best to move your body when feeling down. So often, when feeling low, exercise is the last thing on your mind, but it’s always the best for us. Just taking a brisk walk outdoors, doing an online workout, or taking a workout class so you can be in the company of others, will naturally boost endorphins, allow you to free your mind, and you’ll feel better in the end.

Lastly, a healthy and steady morning routine is also a great way to keep sadness in check.

Of course, it won’t erase the uneasiness. But waking up at the same time every day and allowing yourself to meditate, sip coffee or tea, read a book, or “just be” will strengthen your day and put you in a place of power.

Keep your chin up and remember, before you know it, you’ll be complaining about the New York City heat again!

Make it a happy 2023!

Love, Mindie

TIN BUILDING

JEAN-GEORGES’ LATEST CULINARY ADVENTURE

Just when you thought that the legendary Jean-Georges Vongerichten had done everything a “rock star” chef and restauranteur could produce, he has taken it to the limit with his latest venture! His latest Tin Building at the South Street Seaport is a food hall with an extensive range of cuisines served in numerous settings, from booths to bistros with added points of interest, including a produce market and French-style ice cream and candy boutique.

You can see pieces of Jean-George’s pre-famed life as a youth in Alsace in many of the eateries and shops displayed at the Tin Building but especially at the  T. Patisserie, which has the best croissants in Manhattan. At the fish counter in the  Central Market,  there’s classic local fish reminiscent of its Seaport location.

MARKETPLACE MAGIC

In an exclusive interview with  New York Lifestyles, Jean-Georges discussed the evolution of the Tin Building, damaged during Hurricane Sandy and just a shell of its former self. The industrial-style structure needed to be moved eastward and elevated to become safe enough for humans to visit. In addition, the original interior elements were refurbished to look new, including ceiling details and windows.

The legendary chef and businessperson, who has helmed 40 successful restaurants since moving to NYC in 1986, says, “Growing up in a rural part of Alsace, my family and I frequented markets a couple of times a week. We got our fish from the fishmonger, meat from the butcher, fruits and vegetables from local growers. Then, the weekend farmers market would bring them all together- all fresh and local.” But, he adds, “Markets have always been a place for people to come together for one reason: food. These experiences growing up were a huge inspiration for the  Tin Building. I wanted to create my kind of market where you can buy the freshest local fruits, vegetables, meat, seafood, and flowers but also dine at the market, which is something I haven’t seen before.”

JANUARY 2023 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 67 FOOD & DRINK

A PERFECT DAY

The seven sit-down restaurants within the Tin Building include House Of The Red Pearl, a Chinese-inspired eatery housed within a speakeasy, and  T. Brasserie, which we visited to taste everyday French classics like Onion Soup and Moules Frites and to experience the Gruyere Burger. What makes this burger so unique? It features grass-fed beef from a local farm grilled on an open flame, topped with melted gruyere, and then placed on the most amazingly soft, buttery puffy roll spread lightly with green chili mustard.

We could not resist asking for Chef Jean-Georges’ definitive list of activities for visitors to the Tin Building to experience. He responded, “When we were conceptualizing the Tin Building ten years ago, we wanted to create a market for anything and everything. It’s not just a food market—there are retail and experiential elements to it as well. My suggestion would be to go between 10:30 and 11 am, then order a coffee from  T. Café and a croissant or egg sandwich from  Double Yolk. Sit down and enjoy these. Once you’re finished eating, I would walk to the flower market, take in the beautiful blooms and pick up a plant or bouquet to take home later.”

He continued, “Because this is my homage to the original Fulton Fish Market (the first place I visited in NYC when I landed in 1986), the fish market has a special place in my heart. We have an exciting variety of seafood from local, small purveyors. Walk through and explore the spaces, read the menus, talk to the team, try some charcuterie, and step into the candy land that is The Spoiled Parrot I would then head upstairs and explore the spaces, flip through the cookbooks, take in the various products and pick something up for a friend or a special someone. Once you’ve looked at all the menus, decide which restaurant you’d like to try and ask for a table!”

HANDS-ON PLANNING

It is understood that “JG” is extremely busy, yet he spent hours leading up to the opening of the Tin Building on the premises. He told NYL, “I have been extremely hands-on, as has my team, since Day One. Every choice has been made, from the seats to the door handles, art, menus, cocktails, and products. Because this building is so personal, I’ve wanted to have a say in every element and hear my team’s thoughts.”

You could visit the Tin Building every day for a week and only see about one-third of what they offer, as the restaurants and marketplaces are constantly adding new products. This tremendous fresh eating and shopping space is a perfect reason to visit the Seaport, and the no-rush atmosphere makes it ideal for casual browsing and picking up small bites at the stands as you leisurely walk by. It is also conveniently located on 96 South Street, directly across from all the vintage ships. Friends from out of town and locals will appreciate the incredible array of culinary treats on hand. No other New York City culinary destination has so many types of cuisine under one roof.

The Tony-nominated Broadway revival of Peter Pan starring Cathy Rigby tells the classic tale of the young boy who refuses to grow up. Based on the biblical story of Joseph and his coat of many colors, this tale follows as Joseph (Osmond), the favorite son of Jacob (Academy Award-winner Sir Richard Attenborough), is sold into slavery by his jealous brothers only to become one of the most powerful men in Egypt after currying favor with the pharaoh. This is a rousing, family-friendly adventure also starring Joan Collins.

Joby Talbot’s original score is full of sweeping melodies and contemporary sounds. Lauren Cuthbertson stars as the inquisitive Alice, with Federico Bonelli as the charming Knave of Hearts, Steven McRae as the tap-dancing Mad Hatter, and Laura Morera as the formidable Queen of Hearts.

CINDERELLA

Lesley Ann Warren plays the title role in this television production of the classic Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein III musical. Featuring beloved songs like “In My Own Little Corner,” “It’s Possible,” “Ten Minutes Ago,” and more, this timeless story will be adored by children and adults alike.

DADDY LONG LEGS

Based on the classic novel which inspired the 1955 movie starring Fred Astaire—a beloved tale in the spirit of Jane Austen, the Brontë Sisters, and Downton Abbey—this heartwarming story about a witty and winsome young woman and her mysterious benefactor has charmed audiences of all ages from Los Angeles to London. Daddy Long Legs has echoes of She Loves Me and top-notch performances and one of the most enthralling, entertaining and moving love stories on the American musical theater stage.

SPOTLIGHT ON STAGE

Barbara Pasternack has been the Artistic Director of TheaterWorksUSA since 2000, assuming that position after the company’s founder, Jay Harnick, retired. TheaterWorksUSA has led the movement for young and family audiences in New York City and across North America for over half a century, creating exceptional, transformative theatrical experiences accessible to young and family audiences in diverse communities throughout New York City and North America.

Since 1962, the 501(c)3 not-for-profit has captured the imaginations of 100 million new and veteran theatergoers with an award-winning repertoire of over 130 original plays and musicals. The company produces high-caliber, engaging theater that fosters an appreciation for the art form amongst expansive audiences, giving all generations something to enjoy. In addition, it supports creative and performing artists in their continued professional development, providing platforms for creative expression at any phase in someone’s career.

Pasternack has developed and produced almost 100 original plays and musicals, creating a critically acclaimed, diverse repertoire of family entertainment, including  The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical,  which ran on Broadway and is currently touring the US; the shows reach millions nationally each year, and TheaterworksUSA is an established brand, valued by educators, parents, and industry professionals.

Barbara has cultivated artistic relationships with hundreds of new and established writers, directors, designers, and performers. In addition to sitting on various professional panels, Pasternack has been a longtime Lucille Lortel Award Nominator, served on the selection committee for the Rhinebeck Writer’s Retreat, and taught at the NYU Graduate Musical Theater Writing program.

We had the opportunity to ask Ms. Pasternack about her past and plans with TheaterWorksUSA.

Why is it essential to introduce theater to young audiences?

Introducing young audiences to relevant, impactful, entertaining theatrical experiences encourages an optimistic, inclusive worldview, empathy, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. At a time when we all feel particularly disconnected, this communal live experience connects people. That’s part of what makes it so unique.

And, of course, fostering an appreciation for the art form amongst vast young audiences is an investment in the future of our industry. These young people will become the next generation of theatergoers, patrons, subscribers, and artists. So, capture them now, and you’ll have them for life!

Tell us your career highlights with TheaterWorksUSA.  I have been here for most of my adult life and watched cheering, parents and children laughing and crying together, exiting the theater deep in discussion. Then there was the first time I secured the rights to adapt the book Harold and the Purple Crayon. And, of course, the first full season as Artistic Director at Lortel, which included Nell Benjamin, Laurence O’Keefe, and Julia Jordan’s gorgeous musical  Sarah Plain and Tall, Bathsheba Doran’s Great Expectations with Kathleen Chalfant, Anne of Green Gables by Gretchen Cryer and the late Nancy Ford, and Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich’s Junie B. Jones

Those special moments have also included working with the legendary Ossie Davis and Jason Robert Brown on  Paul Robeson. And then there was children’s book author Dav Pilkey’s enthusiastic standing ovation the first time he saw Kevin Del Aguila and Brad Alexander’s adaptation of  Dog Man the Musical and Lin-Manuel Miranda and his son Frankie’s enthusiastic response to a run-through of the show this year. It was Frankie’s first show, and I can’t wait to invite them back to see our new adaptation of Pilkey’s Cat Kid Comic Club!

I treasure those moments of discovery when you hear or see an artist’s work for the first time and the hair on the back of your neck stands up. You know it’s unique. My most recent a-ha moment?

And, of course,  The Lightning Thief: Its entire journey from Theater for Young Audiences (TYA) tour to off-Broadway hit to the national tour and finally to Broadway now is getting the opportunity to be introduced to new audiences.

What are you most excited about for the future of TheaterWorks USA? I’m excited about current partnerships with The Apollo Theater, Orlando Reparatory Theater, La Mirada, and future ones we’re exploring with other regional and TYA theaters. We’re a national company, so having national partners and hubs makes so much sense.

I’m excited about  Long Way Down premiering in The Apollo’s new Victoria Theater and finding other opportunities to produce our work in NYC. Looking ahead, we have some new projects in development-an adaptation of  Stunt Boy by Jason Reynolds and Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin. And who knows what other opportunities the future holds.

Today, Pasternack is ensuring the next generation of theater audiences by reaching diverse communities with high-quality shows at affordable prices.

LAUGHTER AND TEARS IN THE NEW YEAR

A MAN CALLED OTTO PG-13

Tom Hanks does his version of Grumpy Old Men in this seriocomic look at Otto, a widower who doesn’t see much sense in going on. But then a young family moves in next door and Otto’s life is suddenly topsy turvy, in a way that keeps him interested in living. Based on the best-selling novel A Man Called Ove, this Marc Foster film is produced by Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson, who also performs an original song in the film.

CLOSE PG-13

Winner of the 2022 Cannes Film Festival’s Grand Prize, Close is an intensely emotional film about two teenage Belgian boys whose friendship sparks a series of events that ultimately breaks them apart. Directed by Lukas Dhont, this unforgettable film has won top prizes at film festivals across the globe, playing to packed houses and rave reviews.

LIFE UPSIDE DOWN: WORLD’S APART

Not yet rated Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul) stars in this pandemic-inspired movie that follows the lives of three Los Angeles couples stuck in their homes during the heart of the COVID-19 crisis. With a combination of laughs, tears, and some truths that we all felt during the lockdown in the USA, this ironic story written and directed by Cecelia Miniucchi also stars Radha Mitchell, Danny Huston, and Rosie Fellner.

MISSING PG-13

When Grace (Nia Long) goes missing in Colombia, her daughter June (Storm Reid) is frantic with worry back home in Los Angeles. But when June begins to try to track her mom down, lots of secrets and lies begin to unravel in this modern thriller that reminds kids everywhere that the Internet isn’t always their friend when it comes to finding out too much about their parents’ lives beyond being Mom and Dad.

OPERATION FORTUNE: RUSE DE GUERRE

Not yet rated We generally love Guy Ritchie movies, even when they come out in the January dead zone that traditionally follows the December run toward Oscar. This film stars Ritchie favorite Jason Statham as a secret agent, along with Aubrey Plaza, Hugh Grant, Cary Elwes, Josh Hartnett and Eddie Marsan, who race around in classic Ritchie style, with crackling dialogue and complicated scenarios, all told with a tongue-in-cheek sassiness as they try to save the world from destruction.

CRIME AND COMEDY RING IN THE NEW YEAR

ACCUSED FOX

From Howard Gordon, the man who brought Homeland and 24 to TV, comes Accused, a 15-part anthology crime series. Featuring an all-star cast that changes each week—everyone from Margo Martindale and Wendell Pierce to Rhea Perlman and Michael Chiklis—and explores tales of criminals and the punishments they receive (or don’t). Each one is set in a different city as well, in this collection of topical tales that will leave you pondering the human condition.

NIGHT COURT NBC

This month’s blast-from-the-past reboot is Night Court, the latest reimagining of a classic and much-loved 1980s TV comedy series. John Larroquette returns to reprise his four-time Emmy Award-winning role of Dan Fielding, who’s now a public defender (not the DA). The new Judge Stone is played by Melissa Rauch; she’s the daughter of Harry Stone, originally played so beautifully by Harry Anderson in the original. We’re really hoping this one is as funny as the original!

POKER FACE Peacock

This one’s got crime and comedy, as Natasha Lyonne joins forces with Knives Out writer-director Rian Johnson in a 10-part mystery series. Each week, she tackles a new crime, using her unique talent of knowing when someone is lying. Joined by an all-star cast of revolving characters played by everyone who’s anyone (Adrien Brody, Ellen Barkin, Tim Blake Nelson, S. Epatha Merkerson, Nick Nolte, Ron Perlman, etc.), this is the one to watch while it’s snowing outside in January.

SHRINKING

Apple TV+ Jason Segal takes the lead as the therapist who is having his own little breakdown as this 10-part seriocomic series begins. It’s a show that had us at “Hello,” as it is created and scripted by Segal and the Ted Lasso Emmy winning duo of Brett Goldstein and Bill Lawrence. We’d watch anything those guys produce, and it certainly doesn’t hurt that Harrison Ford plays opposite Segal in this slightly mad new series

THAT 90s SHOW Netflix

Yes, you read that correctly! That 70s Show is back but adding 20 years to bring it to That 90s Show, complete with Red and Kitty still living upstairs and a basement full of teenagers navigating out the next generation’s way to adulthood in suburban Wisconsin. Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rapp reprise their roles, with newcomer Callie Haverda leading the teens as their granddaughter. She’s Eric and Donna’s daughter, so don’t be surprised if those two turn up as well in this reboot helmed by the original show’s creators.

ENTREPRENEUR’S CORNER

Guy Stanley Philoche has become one of his generation’s most collected artists for his striking works of dynamic range, embracing pop culture, abstracts, and slices of New York City life depicted in paintings that always catch the eye. The Haitian-born Philoche has carved out his niche in the art world and garnered a fervent fanbase and international recognition through his tenacity, technique, and talent.

His work can be seen in fine galleries and private collections of those who have discovered his work organically, through word-ofmouth, and via the newest social media tool. Philoche has taken to this modern approach in marketing saying, “We’re in a society with that whole “struggling artist’ thing exists. You don’t have to do that with technology. We have TikTok and Instagram. Millions of people can look at your work in a heartbeat. Social media overall is a game changer for our community.”

Philoche says he sees its impact among his peers, “I know artists who are super famous and demanding millions of dollars for their work, and I have friends who haven’t had their big break yet but are artists who do very well without having a gallery. They all do everything themselves on Instagram, which has expanded visibility for artists, to everyone’s benefit.”

GETTING EXPOSURE

The art of cultivating broader exposure was pioneered by two of Philoche’s idols, “I love Andy Warhol, not just because of his work, but the way he played that role as an artist. He became a celebrity in his own right; when Andy Warhol was walking down the street, everyone knew who he was. Also, I admire Jeff Koons; how he managed his career is incredible. Jeff Koons is a business. He became this brand, and I think that’s amazing.”

As for his own career trajectory, he humbly says, “Art saved my life many days when I was young. But then, I could’ve gone down the wrong path. I owe a debt that I could never pay back, but I also made a promise to myself. I vowed that once I’m in the room and have a seat at the table, I will always open doors for people. I have a philosophy that I’ve lived by ever since I moved to New York City. Every time I sell a painting, I buy a painting from an upcoming artist, and now I live in a museum.”

The artist, who now lives in Harlem, loves New York but cautions that one minute you’re up and the next moment something great happens. “That’s why people fight hard to stay here because your life could change in a heartbeat. Just walking out the door. I’m a product of it.”

BIG CITY DREAMS

Growing up in suburban Connecticut, Philoche knew in his teens what he was destined to do, but his Haitian-immigrant parents did not always encourage his aspirations. Philoche recalls, “With our Caribbean background, I was told to either become a lawyer, doctor, engineer, or work at some government job. And then, one night, I told my parents that I was going to art school, and they were not happy. So, they gave me the alternative of attending a trade school instead of a university. And I told them I would not be doing that, so I left home when I was 17 years old and never looked back.”

For some artists, inspiration is fleeting, but for Philoche, he says, “This is New York City, where you can walk down the street and be inspired. I can randomly see something or someone amazing. Even staying in my apartment, there is so much to see. I’ve been truly fortunate that I can run with inspiration through 20 to 30 paintings of a series, and when I’m over it, I can move on to a new one.”

While artists often concern themselves with legacies and reputation, Philoche is clear on his. When asked how art historians will one day describe him, Philoche answers, “As the people’s artist.”

MY NEW YORK STORY

The wedding of Lt. Col. Allison Ecung and Freiherr Raban von Arnim late last year created a unification with not just special meaning for the happy couple, but also a gift for society. The philanthropic couple exchanging vows was symbolic of their beautiful bond, as well as that of two people helping to make the world a better place. Their romance has created for them a keen sense of the importance of giving and a passionate vision to support those most in need in the world.

A select group of 100 international guests from Mexico, Sweden, Denmark, England, India, South Korea, Australia, the Netherlands, Spain, as well as the United States and Germany traveled to Potsdam in Germany for the blissful celebrations. Multiple events over the course of three days took place took place at the soirée including a traditional Polterabend at Villa Schöningen on the Bridge of Spies Friday.

A FAIRYTALE WEDDING

A Saturday formal ceremony in morning attire took place at St Peter and Paul Wannsee, the former church and sacred burial place of the Prussian Royal Family. Following was a luncheon reception at the American Academy in Berlin. The couple has proudly over the years backed this cultural institution’s work in New York City and Berlin.

Then a black-tie wedding ball with cocktail hour commenced along with a three -course dinner all followed by dancing until the early hours of the morning at Castle Kartzow. The festivities were completed with a Sunday Goodbye Brunch at Castle Kartzow, which ended with a special honeymoon for the pair in Egypt. A prior bridal reception was hosted at Mikimoto, which was declared to be serendipitous since pearls are the symbol for a Baron’s coronet.

Their romance was born from a mutual compassion to support charitable causes. First meeting at charity events in Europe, they equally agreed to have their nuptials highlight important causes. Guests were invited to donate to the Mission Society of New York City and Brot für die Welt in lieu of more traditional gifts. Other organizations the couple support include White Cross Ball for the Order of Malta, the Intrepid Museum, and the New York Friends of the Kunsthistorisches Museum.

A POWER COUPLE

The true definition of a power couple, their thought-provoking relationship can only be described as the stuff of a romantic film on the silver screen: An American military officer travels overseas, meets a European nobleman and they fall in love.

Lieutenant Colonel Allison Ecung is a Public Affairs Officer at the U.S. Air Force National Media Outreach Office in New York. In this capacity, she is responsible for maintaining national media relationships, along with planning and engaging through Senior Leader media and civic operations. Ecung commissioned from the U.S. Air Force Academy began her career as a communications and cyberspace operations officer. She later completed her master’s degree in international relations, transitioning to the public affairs field before being selected as a Foreign Area Officer for the European region.

The Baron studied law at Heidelberg University and currently provides legal consultation for Charite Hospital in Berlin. Historically his family has produced several famous writers and artists and he is a descendant of the famous writer Bettina Freifrau von Arnim, whose face was formerly on the Deutschmark bill.  He remains very involved with the events and programs at his family’s historical homes, particularly at Zernikow manor.

Looking to the future, the Baron and Baroness will focus on continuing support for German and American charities, especially the New York Quadrille Ball, at which Ecung danced in 2010 and has actively supported since then. She also remains on the junior steering committee for the American Ballet Theatre and the Young Fellows Steering Committee for The Frick Collection.

TIME OUT WITH…

Meet 22-year-old Sofie Mählkvist, Swedish socialite and budding philanthropist. Sofie recently stepped into Miami’s Art Basil party scene at the Sarabande Dinner, the foundation initiated by designer Alexander McQueen. Then while in Miami, it was on to celebrate the re-launch of SEX by Madonna, who still has the wow magic. Back to New York City, and we found Sofie in attendance at the Robert F. Kennedy Ripple of Hope Awards honoring Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

The young and energetic Sophie never stops. “I’ve been spending my summers in the Hamptons and New York for most of my life. I have family and friends here, so it’s the place where I’ve always felt at home,” said Sofie.

We predict 2023 will be an incredibly good year for Sophie…

PHILANTHROPIC: THE JUNIOR LEAGUE

Newly graduated from Regent’s University London, where she studied marketing and global management, the young beauty has also enjoyed New York City and attending Fashion Week annually. She always cores out time to continue her charitable work to lend her talents to nonprofits in the arts and charities.

Sofie’s global reach is inspiring. The native Swede has spent much of her life with the Junior League where she is a chair in London. You’ll find her serving in soup kitchens, fundraising, and collaborating with new immigrants to help them integrate into their communities. Working with immigrants, teaching the English language, assisting with settlement issues, and helping to navigate red tape took center stage over the past 18 months.

WOMEN, CHILDREN & ANIMAL WELFARE

Sophie’s energy is boundless. She is also involved with charities in Latin America, supporting child and animal welfare and environmental preservation. Her efforts have led her to be involved with Guatemalan charities.

Understaffed and in dire need of help, several Guatemalan

organizations have sought her assistance. One of her favorite programs, Magical Classroom, trains young adults to instruct children aged 4-6 in areas of the country with little access to preschools and kindergartens, providing nutrition to underprivileged children and preparing them for success when they enter school.

Her support of the Ayuda organization helps stray animals with vaccinations, food, medical care, and shelter. This animal welfare organization supports homeless animals with vaccinations, food, medical care, and protection. She effortlessly set up an online shop for Ayuda to sell accessories like dog collars to help raise money. Through social media, she’s helped them to promote their Etsy and Instagram stores. “I help with basic types of background things since I haven’t been able to be in the field.” At The Mesoamerican Permaculture Institute (IMAP). Sophie immerses herself in the ecological education center that promotes permaculture techniques, local biodiversity conservation, the production of organic food, and a seed bank. Sofie has been working with these charities, helping with fundraising, outreach strategies, marketing, social media campaigns, and various other tasks.

Helping to fight the discrimination, inequality, and abuse women face in society is essential for Sofie. “It’s something that feels close to me,” she said. “I feel like that could’ve been me if I had chosen the wrong guy to be with or if I would’ve applied to a different job or a different industry. I hope that someday soon, the world will be equal.”

Children, of course, are the most vulnerable of humans, and Sofie believes it’s crucial to help them get on the right track from the start. “I feel if you help underprivileged children, make them feel that they have a future, all possibility is in their hands.”

WHAT’S IN STORE FOR 2023

Sofie intends to pursue a job in the fashion world. Her favorite labels include Valentino and Saint Laurent. However, she makes room for other designers as well. She best describes her look as boho chic with a contemporary edge. As she says, “It’s Isabel Marant meets Saint Laurent,” she told us with a smile.

Then HRH Crown Princess Katherine thanked her husband, and everyone involved with the Lifeline Foundation. “My humanitarian efforts for Serbia started 28 years ago by providing medical equipment for the University Children Hospital in Belgrade. Children, their health, and their well-being are at the very core of all my humanitarian activities, as well as the activities of my foundation in Belgrade and all Lifeline humanitarian organizations whose patron I am. There is a challenging situation with children’s hospitals in Serbia.
