Yes, there is a silver lining in every cloud: The shelter-in-place time now available to us has given us more time to spend with our families and loved ones. It could be as simple as eating and cooking meals together every night or having a family game board night if it’s a trivia-styled game, maybe even step it up a notch and Zoom with a host of friends and family virtually. Remember the term “movie night?” Well, what’s old is new again: pick a classic On Demand and relax with a bowl of popcorn or surf around to find a new original series on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime. Then you could binge-watch multiple seasons in just a few days, who needs more sleep anyhow? Maybe avoid all that insanity by just enjoying a Tony Award-winning play or musical now by streaming with BroadwayHD. It’s New York Lifestyles’ pick for great entertainment. To find out more about this incredible platform, read this month’s cover feature. What about spending some of the time to learn how to play a musical instrument, exercising at home, spicing up a dinner menu by taking a class in culinary arts, focusing on new techniques in photography, or even finally sitting down to write that novel you always seemed to put off. A helpful and motivating resource that I came across is called MasterClass, and it truly has some of the best instructors in the world teaching you. However you spend your time I would like to remind New Yorkers no matter how tough it gets, we always come out stronger in the end. The key to our success is that we work and stay together. Let’s not forget Mother’s Day and Father’s Day when we honor parents for their love, support, and everything they’ve done for us. I especially would like to thank my parents with all my appreciation! Not to be forgotten is a salute to the Graduating Class of 2020. Although this will be a less festive occasion from year’s past, it’s still a memorable fresh start with new beginnings. Our congratulations to my daughter Kelley and all graduates, remember dreams do come true. You are our future! Stay Safe and Healthy,
-Bill Mason

HOW THIS HUSBAND-AND-WIFE TEAM HAVE MADE BROADWAY MORE ACCESSIBLE By Patricia Canole
roadway has always been the pinnacle of live entertainment, but on March 11th, all 41 theaters shut down in Times Square, followed by the touring Broadway theaters across the country and then theaters across the globe. Uncertainty remains as to when the curtains will rise again, but thanks to BroadwayHD, a media technology company, Broadway fans still have a way to watch full-length musicals and plays any time of day or night. BroadwayHD, often described as the Netflix for Broadway, has more than 300full-length, VOD (video on demand) recorded productions. Award-winning shows include Phantom of The Opera, 42nd Street, Kinky Boots, The King and I, Sound of Music, Cats, Les Misérables, Jesus Christ Superstar, Oklahoma, 42nd Street. There’s also Cirque du Soleil, Riverdance, and Shakespeare. BroadwayHD is making Broadway accessible to the world through Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku, The BroadwayHD Channel on Amazon Prime, and at BroadwayHD.com.
BroadwayHD’s Stewart F. Lane and Bonnie Comley
Launched in 2015 by Tony Award winning producers, Bonnie Comley and Stewart F. Lane, BroadwayHD is proving to be a winwin for everyone who loves Broadway by serving theater fans and ensuring a strong audience for the future. Recently, the couple joined New York Lifestyles to discuss their careers in the entertainment industry and their newest production BroadwayHD.
MAY/JUNE 2020 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 9
Tell us about your background and what led to your career in acting and Tony Award-winning producing. When did you know you wanted to be in show business? Stewart: I fell in love with the theater at an early age. When I was 11, I was invited to see my first Broadway show by my best friend Ricky, who unbeknownst to me was the son of a well-known performer, but I was not familiar with his father’s career. When I went to see the show, it was an awesome experience; going into New York City, putting on a tie and jacket, and going to a beautiful Broadway theater. We were given a Playbill and a ticket with the name of the show. I was excited and pumped up. They marched us down the aisle to the front row, and the curtain goes up on a musical called Little Me, written by Neil Simon and Cy Coleman and starring my friend’s father, Sid Caesar. By sitting in the front row, I got to see a little bit of the action as actors prepared to go on stage. Then afterward, we went backstage, and there was Sid holding court with his friends and laughing and joking. I was inspired! I immediately fell in love with the theater. After that night, everything was geared to drama classes, speech classes, and the after-school theater club. All through high school, I was directing a show, or writing a show, or acting in a show. In college, I majored in theater at Boston University. Upon graduation, I started doing summer stock and commercials and movies. In my late 20s, I wanted a little more stability, so I turned to producing. At that time, in the late 1970s, no one wanted to be a producer. Broadway was struggling, and Times Square was considered a dangerous neighborhood at night. I started working as an assistant to Jimmy Nederlander and was reading scripts and learning about the business side of theater. Jimmy was a kind and generous mentor. The first show I worked on with him was Whose Life Is It Anyway? a play that won a Tony for Tom Conti for Best Actor. I went on to do several other shows, and then came La Cage Au Folles. I won my first Tony with La Cage in 1984, which launched my career as a producer. Since then, I have produced over 40 Broadway shows, won six Tony Awards, Olivier Awards, Drama Desk, Drama League Awards and continue to look for the next great project to bring to Broadway! Bonnie: As a theater producer, I was able to combine my business background with my love of theater. I started with co-producing several shows and then took the lead producer position in 2006 and won my first Tony Award with Jay Johnson in The Two & Only. To date, I have produced or co-produced 25 Broadway shows and won three Tony awards, and produced three West End shows and won an Olivier. I am currently developing a new musical using the songs of John Denver.

I fell in love with the theater at an early age. When I was 11, I was invited to see my first Broadway show… —Stewart F. Lane
As a co-founder of BroadwayHD, what inspired you to create this streaming service. Bonnie: The Broadway industry was booming. According to The Broadway League’s statistics, the 2018-19 season attendance topped those of the ten professional New York and New Jersey sports teams combined, bringing in close to $2 billion in ticket sales and adding another $12.6 billion to the economy of New York City. Add another several billion for U.S. touring productions and international tours, and the global economic impact is staggering. And yet, with millions of tickets sold every year, there are still so many more people who never get to see the Broadway shows. Filming the shows is very complicated because Broadway is entirely unionized, and it’s costly. But about six years ago, things started lining up, and with the advancement of technology and the agreements we were able to negotiate with all unions. Broadway had an amazing growth rate for 30 years, and its appeal was greater than ever. The timing was right to start a streaming business with fulllength Broadway shows. So, BroadwayHD was launched five years ago, and we are committed now, more than ever, to make theater accessible and easy to stream at home! Stewart F. Lane with his six Tony Awards
Starting any business, of course, can be difficult. Were there obstacles to overcome? Challenges? Stewart: I love Broadway and live theater and wanted to share this experience with people around the world. Not everyone can get to see a Broadway show, so I wanted to bring the show to people in their homes, and with the Internet, this is now possible. Streaming technology allows consumption of theater anytime and anywhere, so theater fans have access and engagement opportunities 24/7. BroadwayHD is the only streaming service offering premium full-length stage plays and musicals. Subscribers have unlimited on-demand access to a library of more than 300 theater productions from Broadway and the West End, and every month we add new shows. Our motto: “If You Can’t Get to Broadway, Get to BroadwayHD.” I was able to leverage our relationships with members of the Broadway community and negotiate deals with all the unions. As far as the technical and artistic challenges of filming the Broadway shows, we carefully select TV directors who love theater and want to respect the integrity of the stage director’s vision. BroadwayHD stage captures beautifully shot theater with multiple high definition cameras; we pay special attention to the audio capture as well. Bonnie: Stewart has been a theater owner for over 40 years and co-owns the famous Palace Theater with the Nederlander Organization. And we are both members of The Broadway League. Our first passion is for the live stage experience, so BroadwayHD’s mission from inception was to be additive to the Broadway industry, to support and promote the stage shows. BroadwayHD provides streaming entertainment for the existing Broadway fans and to encourage the next generation of theater fans. MAY/JUNE 2020 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 13
How do you obtain getting the licenses and the rights to stream the Broadway productions? Stewart: As long-standing members of the theater community, we formed agreements with all 17 unions, guilds, and associations behind Broadway shows, so that show creators are compensated for filming. BroadwayHD has partnered with leading theater companies such as Roundabout Theatre Company, The Public Theater, Manhattan Theatre Club, The Geffen, and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and has filmed dozens of productions throughout the years. It’s a very collaborative process. When a show makes its way to Broadway, there is a guaranteed level of quality. You might not like the story, but you can’t argue with the quality of the production values. Are there new productions you’re adding for 2020, can you share what’s in the pipeline? Bonnie: Yes, indeed! Look for Pippin, Jesus Christ Superstar, Billy Elliot, The Last Five Years, On the Town, and Victor Victoria. How often is BroadwayHD updated? Bonnie: BroadwayHD adds new shows every week. Would you stream an exclusive live production? Stewart: BroadwayHD is in the Guinness World Records for the first live stream of a Broadway musical. We live-streamed She Loves Me from the Roundabout Theater Company’s Studio 54 Theater. We have done about 10 live streams of shows. We learned, though, that our audience didn’t care that the show was live-streamed. The important thing was that they had the convenience to stream the video on demand on their TV, computer, phone, or tablets any time of day or night. Tony Award Winners Stewart F. How has working in the entertainment field helped in developing the concept? Bonnie: Stewart has extensive knowledge of the history of theater. He has written three books on theater history and two books on how to produce for the theater. His reputation gave industry leaders a sense of confidence and level of trust that others from outside the community couldn’t duplicate. As Tony Award-winning producers tell us how you select a project? Stewart: First, we look to see whether it’s an engaging story, an exciting story with empathetic characters. Then I look at the costs involved with trying to produce a show. I think everything begins and ends with: Is it good storytelling? Which character from a Broadway production would best describe your personality and one you can relate to. Stewart: I always liked Julian Marsh from 42nd Street. He had the energy and the tenacity and the focus to get the job done. I’d like to think of myself as Julian Marsh. Looking back to when you first started in the entertainment business, what is the one thing you wish you knew then? Stewart: There are easier ways to make a living! I’ll tell you that. MIRBEAU INN & SPA CLASSIC COMFORTS IN RHINEBECK, NY By Jeff & Stephanie Sylva
getaway destination is a place to enjoy “classic comforts,” a place to reconnect and regroup. A place of gracious hospitality where guests can let go and relax. And importantly—a site that is close to home. This vision of a getaway is what led Linda and Gary Dower to create the first Mirbeau Inn & Spa in their hometown of Skaneateles, NY, in the year 2000. In September 2019, the third Mirbeau Inn & Spa opened in the historic Village of Rhinebeck, NY, in the heart of the Hudson Valley—just a two-hour drive from New York City. Mirbeau, loosely translated as “reflected beauty,” is inspired in part by the soft light, warm colors, and introspective character found in the paintings of renowned French impressionist Claude Monet. This inspiration is apparent in the Inn’s French chateau styling, which is immediately seen when you drive into the resort’s cobblestoned courtyard, and in the interior design featuring recreations of Monet’s work. Large gas fireplaces in the dining room and the adjoining library enhance the chateau-style ambiance. The Inn & Spa are artistically designed and present a warm and cozy feeling reflecting the Mirbeau philosophy of balancing life with wellness and indulgence.
King Room
Reminiscent of an Old-World chic Parisian hotel, the 50-room resort offers Signature rooms with one king-size bed or two queen beds, or a Luxurious Suite. The luxurious beds, made exclusively for Mirbeau and topped with plush comforters, promise a restful sleep and a perfect chance to re-balance. Located on a nightstand next to each bed is a “Zen machine,” which incorporates an oil diffuser with a selection of white noise sounds. In addition to a cozy fireplace, each room offers oversized bathrooms with luxuriously tiled walk-in showers, claw-foot European-style soaking tubs, and double sinks. AN EXQUISITE SPA
The centerpiece and emotional heart of Mirbeau is the award-winning 12,000 square-foot Spa Mirbeau. The fourteen treatment rooms feature fireplaces and private sound systems. The men’s and the women’s changing rooms offer eucalyptusinfused steam rooms and Himalayan salt saunas. A tranquil Resting Area has a relaxing fireplace and unique meditation rock with flowing water creating the perfect Zen-like atmosphere. The Aqua Terrace is an outdoor oasis that includes a relaxing large hot spa pool with massage jets, waterfall, an oversized fireplace, and a food and service bar (open year-round). The Spa treatment menu is one of the most extensive and indulgent that we have seen. In addition to traditional Swedish, deep-tissue, and aromatherapy massages, Mirbeau offers a variety of rejuvenating, indulgent treatments. Try the Signature Massage enhanced with a CBD Treatment. Calming and soothing effects of non-psychoactive CBD oil restore natural movement, eliminate chronic pain, improve your mood, and naturally promote restful sleep. Or, treat yourself to the Organic Radiance Facial where natural, organic, and raw ingredients help deep cleanse the skin of environmental pollutants.
Spa Room
Besides massages and facials, Spa Mirbeau offers groundbreaking BIOTEC Technology, which combines active ingredients with transformative touch. The ELEMIS BIOTEC Firma-Lift Treatment blends massage and sculpting galvanic technology. And if you want to target wrinkles, the ELEMIS BIOTEC Line Eraser Treatment firms and tones skin cells with stimulating microcurrent pulses. A selection of Kur treatments, known to Europeans as the foundation of a traditional spa experience, is also offered. This centuries-old renewal ritual of exercise, proper nutrition, and care of face and body involves a soak in a jetted mineral bath for relaxation and balance. Spa Mirbeau also offers a variety of body treatments, hand & foot therapies, as well as a selection of treatments created specifically for men.

AROUND RHINEBECK Since Rhinebeck sits in the center of the National Historic Landmark District, you can visit nine Hudson River Estates within easy proximity to the Inn. Get out and stretch your legs with a scenic stroll over the Hudson River at the Walkway Over the Hudson in nearby Poughkeepsie, NY. Closer to Rhinebeck is the 120-acre park, Poets’ Walk Park, offering relaxed walking paths in a beautiful landscape. Located in Rhinebeck is the Ferncliff Forest Game Refuge and Forest Preserve. The Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome features over 50 antique aircraft and over 40 vintage vehicles from 1900-1940. Aerial demonstrations are conducted on weekends from mid-June through midOctober. Chef Charlie Palmer
DINING PLEASURE
Dining at Mirbeau is a culinary treat, as one of the country’s most highly regarded chefs, Charlie Palmer, has brought his signature “Progressive American” cuisine to the resort’s restaurant, Willow. Although the dining room is elegantly appointed, do take advantage of the beautiful weather and dine on the outdoor patio, which overlooks a forested area bordered by willow trees. Chef Palmer looks to reinterpret classic European cooking using American artisanal products and small farm producers. “I called it Progressive American because every time I stepped in the kitchen, I felt things moving forward,” says Palmer. Chef Palmer’s creative cooking style and his flair for business have led to his creation of an impressive roster of restaurants across the country. Classically trained at The Culinary Institute of America, Palmer is familiar with the Hudson Valley and looks to draw upon its agricultural heritage. Willow’s menu features local and seasonal produce from multi-generational farms, emergent food artisans, and craft distillers and brewers. Consider a seafood dinner starting with Tuna Tartare with heirloom radish, avocado, and citrus-soy emulsion, or the exquisite Grilled Shelter Island Oysters with tarragon, parsley, lemon, and pancetta. Then enjoy the Icelandic Cod with risotto, lemon confit, fine herbs, and sautéed chanterelles or the Scottish Salmon with fennel, capers, and parsley-lemon vinaigrette – both cooked to perfection. Lighter fare is available at the Aqua Terrace, and Willow also offers a Bar Menu. For more information on Mirbeau Inn & Spa, visit mirbeau.com. • MAY/JUNE 2020 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 27

THE ULTIMATE BUCKET LIST
13 THRILLING EXPERIENCES & MUST-SEE DESTINATIONS By Patricia Canole
f you’re anything like me, then there is nothing better than waking up in a strange new place and enjoying the best adventures that are a world away from a regular routine. However, since we’ve had to hit pause on our travel plans, for the time being, it doesn’t mean we’re not still thinking about all the places we hope to get to sometime soon. Travel fills our lives: from the hours we spend exploring the Internet for inspiration on where to visit or ways a place influences us long after we’ve left, from the food ideas we gather and the music choices we select. So, with that in mind, here is a bucket list for your future adventures. Remember, you don’t necessarily have to go far away to feel far away. So long as it’s a place where you will feel inspired and, most importantly, a little more connected with the rest of the world.

Accessible only by boat, visitors make their way to the island by private vessel or ferry, and Captain George Aswald of Island Express Ferry Service is more than happy to dish most of his secrets to shelling, and where to best spot the horses during the ride. ADVENTURE AWAITS BIG ISLAND
Hawaii The most ecologically diverse part of the Big Island is found in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, located on the eastern side of the island. The park area is exposed to moisture-laden trade winds and extremes in rainfall; as a result, seven ecological life zones (seacoast, lowland, mid-elevation woodland, rainforest, upland forest, and woodland, subalpine and alpine) all flourish within the park’s protected boundaries. The best way to experience volcano country is on two wheels. Bike Volcano offers a Wine Tasting Bike Tour that takes you from the rim of Kilauea, the world’s most active volcano, to the dramatic coastline. During the five-hour excursion, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of the Ka’u Coast, where waves crash around a huge lava-formed archway and a molten lava shelf contuse to grow, thanks to constant volcanic activity. And you’ll whiz along the mostly downhill 15-mile path through the rainforest, past volcanic steam vents, pit craters, and vast lava fields. After a picnic lunch overlooking the restless Pacific, you’ll be escorted to a trail that cuts through a jungle of giant ferns and leads into the Thurston Lava Tube, a 30-foot-high, 450-footlong tunnel formed by an underground lava flow. Then it’s time to stop at the Volcano Winery to toast all this fantastic beauty. Info: bikevolcano.com.

MUSIC PARADISE NASHVILLE
Tennessee Nashville’s reputation as the home of country music is legendary. So, a visit to this city for any music fan is often a spiritual journey to where the likes of Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, and Dolly Parton frequented many stages and music halls. It continues today with the city still creating incredible music at venues along Broadway and other spots. The granddaddy of them all, of course, is The Grand Ole Opry—often called the radio show that made country music famous—and has been around since 1925, where it took residence at Ryman Auditorium featuring many of the genre’s most well-known artists. The show eventually moved its present-day location at the Grand Ole Opry House in 1974 and continues to fill seats. Other venues like the Bluebird Café is small in space but big on talent. Musicians and songwriters, including Garth Brooks and Taylor Swift have appeared on stage. Make a point to see Music Row, where recording companies sit tall and a visit to the original RCA Studio where Elvis Presley crooned a few tunes. And before leaving Music City, spend a day at The Country Music Hall of Fame. The extensive collections housed here cover the course of the genre’s development, the birth of Nashville’s legacy as Music. The HOF is home to rare audio recordings as well as a film theater and performance stage; check the event calendar to see what’s playing. Info: visitmusiccity.com.

BLOSSOMS WITH A TWIST Belle Fleur, one of the New York’s premier florists, responded ever so quickly (and generously) to the recent business shutdown. To gladden hearts, co-owner and creative director, Meredith WagaPerez, offered to send “virtual bouquets” to people—gratis. The idea went viral and the Belle Fleur team fulfilled hundreds of orders, sending alluring photos of exquisite bouquets to neighbors, teachers, colleagues, family, friends, and lovers. The Internet gracefully “wafted” anemones to Milan and peonies to Martha’s Vineyard, among the many destinations. As she penned the messages on the accompanying cards, WagaPerez noted that peeking into people’s unguarded, private sentiments underscored a narrative thread—a positive corollary during this painful, extruded time warp. Waga-Perez huddled with her team (including Chief Ideas Officer, 15-year-old daughter Eva), and lit upon another bull’s eye of an idea for Mother’s Day: Honoring your mom by acknowledging the superheroes of this crisis—the health care angels and first responders at the figurative front. At print time, there is no way to predict when our city will be able to hang the “Open For Business” banner outside offices and shops (and no way to know whether it will be business-as-usual at that time in other parts of the country, where your mother may live).
So, Belle Fleur is offering online gift certificates. (You pick the amount, starting at $100.) When the shutters are opened, Belle Fleur will send a fetching arrangement to a superhero in honor of your mother. Belle Fleur will deliver your flowers with a heartfelt thank you to a health care provider whom they have identified. In turn, Belle Fleur will acknowledge this generosity with a note to your mom. Comments Waga-Perez, “We view ourselves as more than a design studio of floral enthusiasts, but rather as the conduit for the love, friendship, and gratitude that fills your hearts. We are forever grateful for your participation, at this time more than ever.” For more information on Belle Fleur, visit bellefleurny.com. BITS & BAILEY
THE WHO, WHAT & WHERE OF NYC’S SHELTER-IN-PLACE SCENE By Bailey Beckett
s New York gets used to our socially distanced reality, Bailey has some options to stay fabulous, mentally and socially fit, plugged in and ready to emerge. “Time won’t give me time,” once crooned Poet Laurette Boy George. “But you and me, we know they’ve got nothing but time.” To wit! FEED!
Their restaurant food is great, but the heart behind it is even greater. Look no further than the Harlem restaurant FieldTrip, where owner JJ Johnson has earned a national profile for feeding NYC area hospitals. It started with 40 rice bowls sent to the Harlem Hospital Center and has grown exponentially. His early philanthropy was a harbinger of things to come. Dozens of GoFundMe sites are popping up to buy healthcare workers breakfasts, lunches and dinners, and major corporations are donating funds to feed, too. Info: fieldtripnyc.com
Stratis Morfogen of Brooklyn Chop House
FieldTrip isn’t that only restaurant in on the action. Brooklyn Chop House, a popular downtown hot spot, has been sending 40 dinners a night to the frontline staff at New York Presbyterian Hospital, in Lower Manhattan. “I personally walked into the emergency room, it is crazy how tirelessly they are working,” said co-owner Stratis Morfogen. “Nurses are standing up with their eyes closed, resting on a counter for a minute… they are the true heroes.” You are, too, sir! Info: brooklynchophouse.com.
FEEL!
Times are uncertain, but one thing is: our desire to pay tribute to the ones we have lost from the virus. It’s a cathartic, soul lifting experience to honor and remember our loved ones, and the best way to do it is a new site called MourningAmerica. It’s a platform created by Drs. Dermot Jevens and Rebecca Heiss as a means to give back. Users can go online, post a bio and photo of someone they lost and write a tribute. You can also find victims on the site and add your own thoughts. “People are suffering great losses while being isolated from their family and friends at a vulnerable time,” said Jevens. “They need an outlet to express their feelings and honor those who have passed.” Added Heiss: “MourningAmerica. is our way of giving people a voice at a time when they need it most. People are trapped at home, unable to be with their loved ones, and are now experiencing profound loss. We hope this platform allows them a much-needed way to share their feelings and honor the victims of this deadly disease.” Mission accomplished! Info: mourningamerica.org.
FIT!
Let’s face it: weeks at home is not exactly good for the physique, and with health clubs still closed, you better get used to lovin’ those love handles. Thankfully, a few boutique studios have transitioned online. One of my favorites is Aline Pilates, which is offering daily interactive classes on ZOOM led by owner Carey Macaleer and her staff. In addition to traditional classes, the Pilates haven offers pre-and post-natal sessions as well as classes for kids, which include meditation, stretching, Pilates and movement. A portion of the proceeds benefit Covenant House, which provides food for homeless children. “This is a very uncertain time for New York and the country, and as the owner of a studio that trains many people throughout the day, it is necessary for us to cease in-person training and move our sessions online for the time being,” says Macaleer. “Health and wellness are our utmost concern, and we’re pleased we can allow our clients to continue their Pilates and fitness training in a safe, home environment.” Aline will also be offering on demand video Classes with a private trainer and has made its video catalog of pre-taped classes available online. FANTASIZE!
At home orders have isolated millions, and kept us away from our loved ones, friends—and frenemies alike. So why not use the time to escape into history or good fiction? My favorite book during the quarantine has been D-DAY GIRLS: The Spies Who Armed the Resistance, Sabotaged the Nazis, and Helped Win World War II by Sarah Rose, which recently was released in paperback and is already a best seller. It’s the true story about women sent behind enemy lines by Winston Churchill into Nazi France to help set the stage for the D-Day invasion. “These women broke barriers, smashed taboos, and altered the course of history,” says Rose. “They were sent undercover, so they never expected glory, and their story was classified for almost seventy years after the war.” Info: penguinrandomhouse.com. Another WW2-related book is Erik Larsen’s In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror and an American Family in Hitler’s Berlin. This starts pre-war, when the new American Ambassador to Germany, William E. Dodd, moves his family to the country only to see it disintegrate under Nazi rule with his own eyes. Told painstakingly through letters, other correspondence and historical record, it is a chilling account of history in the making. Info: eriklarsonbooks.com. Finally, for escapist prose, what better than a spy novel by its chief, John LeCarre. Bailey so enjoyed his latest, Agent Running in the Field, which follows a veteran agent of Britain’s Secret Service into a labyrinth tale of espionage, brinksmanship and betrayal in a modern-day world. I’d tell you more, but then I’d have to kill you. Info: penguinrandomhouse.com. The Greer Meister Group
FOCUS!
Parents have been thrust into the roles of teachers during the shelter at home orders. To help, Bailey suggests some out-sourcing: The Greer Meister Group, a private tutoring and educational consulting practice that is offering one-on-one video conferencing, as well as small, online classes for kids 4 to 11 years-old. Classes are interactive and feature a hands-on and fun math, science, or humanities activity. Each class is 45 minutes long, has room for up to four children, and costs $40 per child. “You can enjoy giggle-filled classes combining math, science, art, and movement taught by a brilliant math and science teacher who is also a professional modern dancer,” says founder Caitlin Meister, who also lists “humanities and LEGO-based math classes designed to engage everyone’s imagination led by an extraordinary math and ELA teacher who is also a professional actor just off a run on Broadway” as features of the service. “We are well-versed in the distance learning plans of NYC’s schools, both public and private, and we are adept at providing distance learning support in addition to our usual content support and enrichment tutoring,” Meister says. She created The Greer Meister Group 12 years ago and has distinguished the practice as a leader in content mastery, cognitive flexibility, and academic independence and perseverance. Info: greermeistergroup.com. For the adult set, there’s the wildly popular MasterClass where you select your class and instructor. Everything from Acting to Screenwriting and more: Learn creative writing from Margaret Atwood, Filmmaking from Spike Lee, and Cooking from Chef Gordon Ramsey. You can purchase classes with lifetime access to the class (and for a limited time buy a class and get one free for a friend). Info: masterclass.com.
WATCH!
We’re all savoring guilty pleasures, but first feed the soul. Spectrum of Love (YouTube) a 13-minute documentary about one family’s struggle and acceptance of their two children’s autism, and the unexpected love that emerged in the face of hardship. The short film, produced by Bo Magussen, includes touching family videos showing the progression of their sons Adam and Zack’s disorder, as well as touching, present day interviews with members of the family. Magnussen got the idea after the father David, a friend, nearly died from a heart attack. “I have always admired his ability to handle a stressful and difficult situation,” the producer says. “I became more aware of the rise of Autism rates in our country and wanted to tell a story that would capture peoples’ hearts and shine a light on the challenges of autism as well as the lessons that can be learned from it.” It’s powerful stuff, and just the right antidote in these troubled times to lift your spirits. “I think people will get from this movie the power of love as medicine and for parents with autistic children or parents of all children that acceptance sacrifice and commitment can lead to happiness,” says Magnussen. •

TECH TALK HOME AND AWAY By Will Reed
any of us have recently been confronted with either the need to work remotely or to find that our home-working arrangements have been neglected—and with no office to attend a few things need fixing. This month’s column covers some of the more useful tools and apps you will need to flourish while working from home. Who knows? Maybe the current plight will offer new opportunities and perhaps these technologies will help set you free.

WEBCAM
Your home office set-up will comprise either a desktop computer connected to the internet via a LAN cable or else a laptop connected by Cable or Wi-Fi to the Internet. Problems with your Internet connection will make or break your experience. We recommend reviewing any existing home Internet provision for available upgrades or even a new modem. For wireless users the magic phrase is 802.11ac: the latest, and fastest standard for Wi-Fi connectivity. Ensure your modem and computer have these standards embedded in order to get the best from your equipment. If you cut the cable and need internet connectivity at home, consider purchasing a mobile hotspot. Sold by major cellphone providers a hotspot is basically the data capability of a cellphone and with a contract is used to connect devices via Wi-Fi to the Internet. With 5G wireless on the horizon, you will be buying a device which you can get years of high-speed service from as 5G rolls out and becomes more affordable. Typical hotspots include Verizon Inseego 5G MiFi M1000 Hotspot and AT&T NETGEAR Nighthawk Mobile Hotspot Router. Info: Verizon.com; att.com.
The current crisis has brought video conferencing to the forefront with apps like ZOOM, as well as Skype and others. You have probably seen some examples on 24/7 newscasts with unreliable or old webcams which leave them looking decidedly average. Look and sound your best with the Microsoft LifeCam for Business. This webcam has optics which can make low-light environments look better at 1080p resolution and spotless audio through a high-fidelity microphone. Info: microsoft.com.
ALSO ON THE MUST-HAVE LIST
COMPUTER
If you find that the computer you own is s-l-o-w, it might be time to invest in a new desktop/laptop computer. Your options are fundamentally the desktop (bigger screen) or a laptop (more mobile). Second decision is that of a Microsoft Windows or Apple operating system. Remember: Apple is regarded to be more reliable but tends to come with a higher price point. Desktop computers to consider include the all-in-one Apple iMac (in 21” or 27” screen versions) or HP Pavillion 23.8”. For laptops the HP Envy 17.3” windows laptop and Apple MacBook Pro 13” offer solid choices for handling you work needs. Info: apple.com; hp.com. There will undoubtedly be other items and tools you will need to add to your home office. File cabinets, desk organizers, bookshelves—all depending on the type of work you do and the space you have. Use this checklist to get started thinking the important components. You are now on your way to a streamlined and efficient home office. •
PRINTER/MULTIPURPOSE MACHINE Even if you work in a paperless office, there will be times when you need to scan, fax, and even make copies. If this is common in your company/business, invest in a multipurpose machine that can manage all of these tasks. SURGE PROTECTOR Although often overlooked, a surge protector should be a staple in any home office that uses computer equipment. BACKUP DRIVE/PERSONAL SERVER Once the home office is up and running, you will need to have a plan for backing up and protecting your data. You can use a cloud-based backup service to copy files automatically. Additionally, it’s a good idea to have an a external drive in place. They are relatively affordable and can save your business in the case of computer failure. PAPER SHREDDER A shredder is a must for destroying confidential information. And for every piece of non-sensitive paper, consider getting a recycling bin.

REAL ESTATE & YOUR HOME
LUXURY REAL ESTATE THOUGHTS & PREDICTIONS By Esther Reizes-Lowenbein
he novel Coronavirus hit the world like nothing ever before. As this new norm became a reality, it all turned south: People began—and continue—quarantining themselves to enable the slowdown of this plague. Soon after, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the shut-down of “non-essential” workplaces, such as bars, restaurants, and in-person house showings by realtors. Eventually, the ban for in-house showings was removed. However, many buyers stopped searching, listings came off the market, and there was a significant decrease in closings. Our current situation is uncertain; the unknown is scary.
IT’S ALL UPHILL
Luxury real estate seems to have halted, and no one knows when normalcy will resume. Experts can speculate, but no one is certain of when it is best to act or jump back into the market. Several factors will ultimately lead to a boost in the NYC market, but the uphill timing is still unknown. The stock market fluctuation differs from the real estate market. This was evident when stocks tanked by 30 percent in one day, just one week into the COVID-19 shut down in NYC. Eleonora Srugo, a licensed real estate salesperson at Douglas Elliman, suggests that the value of NYC apartments will not drop in the same manner as the stocks. On the other hand, it is the high net-worth group that is usually invested in the stock market. The volatility of the stock market induces fear and anxiety in those invested, causing the luxury tier of the market to be hit hard. Another factor to consider is how the unemployment rate has grown significantly in the last few weeks. Thirty percent of the population have lost their source of income, affordability levels dropped. Many individuals on the verge of going into contract on their dream home, have rescinded their offers, and are reconsidering if they are currently capable of making the same purchase.
THE STATE OF LUXURY
As buyers will scramble to take advantage of a good deal, there will be a shortage of luxury real estate supply. Banks will not finance new developments as easily. This will lead to higher demand for inventory. Residential real estate depends on a healthy residential jumbo and unconventional mortgage system. Currently originating jumbo mortgages is becoming problematic as the banks—the loan originators—begin to encounter liquidity issues. According to Levi Bialestock, VP at FM Home Loans LLC, the problem stems from MBS (Mortgage Back Securities) sales on the secondary market as the buyers encounter a liquidity squeeze. A ripple effect ensues, causing restrictions in qualification terms. Many factors lead to colossal market recovery, but it will take several months post-quarantine to get there. There are a lot of challenges that we need to overcome. Will realtors be comfortable to host open houses once again? Will sellers want strangers in and out of their homes? Bringing strangers into view of one’s home substantially undermines the premise of social distancing. Zoom and FaceTime will be new platforms used to facilitate closings.
FOCUS ON NECESSITY
Real estate affiliates have conflicting thoughts and predictions of how and when they think the luxury real estate market will rebound. Eleanora believes that we will get into full swing by late 44 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MAY/JUNE 2020
summer. In her opinion, residential real estate will rebound faster than the commercial assets of real estate, although it will not be the same again. The first to return to the market will most likely be the ultra-high net worth investors. Usually, it is the audacious businessmen/women who see the opportunity as well as have the disposable income and experience As a managing member at H Equities, Elliot Horowitz believes that the high-end condo market has had a problem for some time. As a debt and equity investor who has done several condo projects, Elliot believes that this high-end market of $10 million+ is thin, to begin with. As the market declines, the higher stratosphere market will continue to deteriorate as these buyers will look to obtain better deals. Mark A. Neuhauser, a NY based real estate attorney, argues that although luxury real estate may incur a small decrease, purchase prices will generally remain the same as pre-Coronavirus. Mark and his team continue to sign contracts and conduct closings while waiting with the rest of the world for a normal return. Charles Fabbella, a member of Ben-Bay Realty Company, seems to agree with Mark. He says that in the long run, a buyer who could afford to buy a luxury home in the first place will be able to do so once this pandemic subsides. Additionally, after being hunkered down for 60 days or so, they will make sure their home is more comfortable. Levi thinks things will get back to normal and possibly better than before. My hope is that this terrifying pandemic ends faster than expected and that the stock market and the luxury real estate market, reemerge better than before. THE LATEST IN HOME DESIGN VERSATILITY IS THE KEYWORD By Stacy Garcia
ith the ever-changing seasons and home décor trends, the possibilities are endless when it comes to interior design and the products that we choose to fill our spaces!
With warmer days upon us, I’ve been pulling inspiration for various products, projects, and collaborations from a slew of colors, environments, textures, locations, and beyond! Versatility in the home is crucial and as an interior designer collaborating with amazing brands including Crypton Home Fabric, IMAX Worldwide Home, and TileBar, my desire to design products that will bring joy and function to the home is ever evolving.
Throughout my journey and career, I’ve found the importance of staying inspired by other leaders and movers and shakers in the community, and I feel as though this is so important for all business owners and entrepreneurs alike! One of my all-time favorite icons is Donna Karan for her global reach, namesake brand, and signature aesthetic that we all know and love today. Another significant influence of mine has been Iris Apfel as she continues to reinvent herself and express originality through her style.
BEAUTY IS EVERYWHERE
To bring even greater outside inspiration into my business and designs, our latest collections are representative of the pure beauty that we encounter every day. I often find that you don’t have to look far and wide to see the beauty that can carry you through life! For example, I’ve found such lovely simplicity in organic shapes free of rigidity yet structurally rich in form. My Voluminous Nature home accessory collection for IMAX Worldwide Home takes on a light, natural appeal full of movement—something you can find in your everyday surroundings. Reminiscent of cellular structure and coral reefs, the pieces within this collection take note of the sensitive state of the natural environment and exhibits the desire for sustainability. If natural materials and organic shapes inspire you, look to bring items into your home that are representative of these things. 48 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MAY/JUNE 2020

A RELAXING AMBIANCE
There is also beauty in appreciating the touch and feel of the items in our home. In a fast-paced, instantaneous, and technologysaturated world, we are continually searching to add comfort back into our environments. Bridging the gap between the digital and physical, I’ve always found it essential to re-integrate the human-touch into our home products, allowing for a newfound acceptance through sensual, yet streamlined and curved silhouettes. I’m beyond inspired by pastel colors paired with jewel tones and smooth finishes providing a positive, tangible sense of contentment. If your space needs relaxing and easy-to-the-touch items, I highly suggest filling your space with these elements. They will keep you grounded. There’s nothing I quite love more than natural materials, organic shapes, and earthy motifs. I’ve spent a lot of my time recently trying to reconnect with nature, which has also inspired my designs. This trend is all about developing a sense of tactility and warmth in a space, and I think that it will continue to grow in popularity! Driven by a muted color palette with shades of sophisticated gray, warm beige, and earthy brown, elements such as stone, tree trunks, and knotted roots are lovely additions to the home this season. During the warmer months, I also find beauty in the sophistication of the Old World with a playful twist. For instance, flourishing florals, pin-straight stripes, and poignant plaids reign as they are transformed into a modern expression of an everlasting aesthetic. With a nod to a time of opulence, beauty lies within the details: think finely crafted jacquards, intricately laid flooring, decorative millwork, and traditional motifs that are timeless and classic with a contemporary edge.

A QUICK REFRESH
Stacy Garcia Home for Crypton Home Modern Legacy Collection Available at Calico
If you’re looking to give your home a quick refresh for the season, I recommend taking those favorite vases out of the cabinet and treating yourself to fresh-cut blooms. Also, don’t forget to think in color! Look for colorful accents like vases and bowls as an inexpensive way to infuse your space with vibrant hues. Lastly, you can swap out the heavy pillows, throws, and rugs for light accents: simple white sheets, a lightweight throw, and woven rugs in a soft palette. Additionally, with outdoor living at an all-time high this season, finding new and exciting ways to create family-friendly spaces that seamlessly flow from the interior to the exterior is crucial. Having a large family, I know a thing or two about creating a home that is the center of your life. I am currently redoing my own outdoor space to capture a more cohesive indoor/outdoor feel. As inspiration typically carries into my work, I will be utilizing this space to implement my upcoming collection with Klaussner Outdoor launching later this year. With a home base in New York, my team and I are continuously looking to push the boundaries in design globally, and my journey thus far has been a dynamic one, full of adventures. If there is one thing that I feel comfortable doing, it is becoming inspired and bringing joy to the comfort of home through beautifully made products! HEALTH & WELLNESS
EASING YOUR FEARS By Peter M. Kalellis
he last couple of months of fear and anxiety have gone by yet leaving most people in wonder. Why has this unexpected enemy, Coronavirus, invaded the world? All ages afraid of death; others are dying without the availability of proper care. We have no rational answers for the many “whys” or to another question, “what is the meaning of suffering?” Ram Dass offers his impression of what suffering meant to him: “When I look back on the suffering in my life, this may sound strange, but I see it now as a gift. I would have never asked for it for a second. I hated it while it was happening, and I protested as loudly as I could, but suffering happened anyway. Now, in retrospect, I see how it deepened my being immeasurably.” Over more than three weeks, fear about the virulently spreading COVID-19 has shaken our entire world. For thousands of people, these critical days have caused terrible hours of anxiety as we watch our nation and what we imagined our future could be. Disease and death, while grim adversaries in this life, will not have the final word over our souls. Somehow our lives and peaceful ways surely brighten conversations when all other lights have gone out.
YOUR INNER SELF
Life is a great blessing to be cherished every moment as we listen carefully to that inner voice of— our inner true self ’s gentle whisper. As we get to know our inner spiritual self, it becomes easier to learn the purpose and meaning in life. Nature has already reached its ultimate glory with better weather prompting trees and flowers to blossom and more delightful days outdoors. And while the faithful have celebrated the spring traditions of Easter and Passover, our human spirit and life are resurrected. We feel happier, kinder, more loving, and better satisfied with life.
REGAIN & SUSTAIN
So long as we are alive, there will always be something that can be done to improve and refine yourself. As we have explored in previous articles, the complexities of our human condition do create obstacles for our growth; problems need to be identified and resolved. To regain and sustain a healthy self requires the development of resources that can facilitate and nurture the restoration process. With a caring attitude, you need to ask yourself, what is it that I want out of my life, what steps do I need to take to attain a healthy and satisfying existence? Then allow a little time to hear the heart’s silent whisper from your inner self.
When I look back on the suffering in my life, this may sound strange, but I see it now as a gift. —Ram Dass 50 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MAY/JUNE 2020
HEALING YOUR WORLD
Start where you are right now. A contemporary society provides means and ways for our physical convenience and enjoyment. Medical science makes a remarkable contribution in terms of procedures to secure optimal physical health. Psychiatry and psychology offer techniques to make healing possible and to stabilize individuals. If the world is to be healed through human efforts, it will be by ordinary people, people whose love for this life is even greater than their fear. Your career, your work is undoubtedly important, as is your income, your health, your talent, your energy, and your relationships. Your physical body is at work every moment since your conception: multiple mechanisms designed efficiently that no human effort could ever be able to match. Your heart beats, your lungs breathe, your ears hear, your eyes see, your hair grows. And you don’t have to make them work—they just do. Now it’s time to realize, your willingness to relax allows it to work for your benefit and most of all peace of mind. •

FOODS THAT HEAL 6 FAVORITES THAT HELP YOU LIVE LONGER & STRONGER By Patricia Canole
he foods we eat gives our bodies the materials they need to function correctly. We all know if we don’t get much-needed nutrition, we will inevitably become overweight, undernourished, and at risk for diseases and conditions including heart disease, arthritis and diabetes. And as Hippocrates affirmed: “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” In short, we are what we eat. what we eat is central to our health. Here, some excellent foods to consider adding to your diet.
BANANAS
This tasty fruit is a complete packet of health benefits. One medium banana contains roughly 422 mg of potassium. It also packs 10 mg of vitamin C. This antioxidant busts free radicals, which damage cells and may contribute to heart disease, arthritis, and even cancer. Try: • Adding a sliced banana to your PB&J. Or make your own banana-cinnamon yogurt: Add a finely diced banana to plain Greek yogurt, plus a spoonful of honey with cinnamon and nutmeg for extra taste.
CHERRIES
A recent study shows that people with gout who consumed cherry extract had a 35 percent lower risk of attacks compared with those who did not. The Osteoarthritis Research Society reported that people who drank 16 ounces of tart cherry juice every day for six weeks felt less pain and stiffness. Cherries also contain anthocyanins, which may protect the heart, control obesity and reduced the risk of diabetes, Try: • Adding dried cherries to oatmeal, cereal or trail mix, or serve as is with some cheese. • Whipping up a cherry smoothie. Mix one small banana, ½ cup of frozen cherries and ½ cup of low-fat milk (almond or coconut milk may also be used) in a blender until smooth
ONIONS
Inside the layers lies a dense package of antioxidants and nutrients that can help prevent—and heal. Onion skin extract, which is a good source of the antioxidant quercetin, helps lower blood pressure. Onions are also packed with antioxidant vitamin C. Try: • Layering raw rings of onion onto your favorite deli meat sandwich. • Grilling an onion: Slice onion into ½-inch-thick rounds, drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper, plus seasonings like thyme and garlic powder. Coat the grill rack with olive oil and grill the onion rounds over medium heat for 3-5 minutes per side.
BEANS
Beans are brimming with heart-healthy nutrients. Consuming beans may also help reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes and control blood sugar levels because of their high fiber content, according to the Mayo Clinic. A cup of kidney beans offers 13 grams of protein, as much as 2 ounces of chicken breast and a whopping 11 grams of fiber. Try: • Topping your salad with beans of your choice (chickpeas, work well). • Making black bean dip. In a food processor, blend two cans of drained low-sodium black beans, ¾ cup salsa, four minced garlic cloves, 2 tsp. fresh lime juice, 1 tsp cumin, 1 tsp. water and 1/8 tsp. salt. Puree until smooth, then add ¼ cup minced cilantro and pulse until combined. Serve with low-fat tortilla chips or your favorite veggies. 52 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MAY/JUNE 2020
CARROTS
Bugs Bunny had it right. Carrots are rich in vitamin A—a half-cup of raw carrot has 459 micrograms of the vitamin. For those aged 14 and older, the recommended daily amount is 700-900 mcg, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Vitamin A promotes healthy eyes and may lower the risk of cancer, says the NIH. Carrots also contain vitamin K. This vitamin helps maintain healthy bones to help reduce the risk of osteoporosis, according to the NIH. Try: • Dipping raw baby carrots into a ¼ cup of hummus or another bean dip. • Crispy carrot chips as a snack: Peel carrots, then use the peeler to create long strips. Toss the pieces with a little olive oil, salt, and pepper. Spread them onto a baking sheet (making sure they don’t overlap) and bake at 425 degrees until crispy, about 10-12 minutes.
CABBAGE
Cabbage makes a fabulous base for recipes such as coleslaw and sauerkraut. Like broccoli and Brussels sprouts, cabbage offers anti-cancer compounds. In fact, red cabbage contains anthocyanins, the flavanol that can keep your heart, liver, and eyes healthy. In sauerkraut, fermented cabbage is used as the base. Such fermented foods may help improve your gut health and alleviate mood disorders. Load up your plate! Try: • Topping a grilled chicken with tangy sauerkraut. • Wrapping chicken salad or other meat fillings in cabbage leaves instead of a standard tortilla wrap. •
OTHER HEALING FOODS Spinach These leafy greens are so low in calories and carbohydrates that you can fill up on them with no ill effects. Cocoa Research shows the flavanols in cocoa may improve cognitive function. Broccoli Sprouts An excellent source of sulforaphane that may help manage Type 2 diabetes.
EVERYBELLY® should be checked for a diastasis recti. A diastasis recti may be the cause of your protruding belly, back pain and poor posture.

MEMORY FLAVORS
COMFORT FOODS ARE JUST A CALL AWAY By Irvina Lew
ur restaurants are our dining rooms, our gathering places; they are where we meet best friends and new acquaintances, celebrate special occasions and enjoy our favorite meals. Some restaurants are finds; others provide memory flavors that remind us of dishes that we’ve discovered while traveling. Still others recreate childhood memories, à la Proust’s madeleine. Whether it’s a Sunday morning bagel, an afternoon pasta extravaganza or a singular experience, like patatas bravas lined up like pieces on a chess board, foods are associated with memory. With most restaurants closed during this challenging time, there’s no use heading downtown to Tim Ho Wan, to sample the same stupendous Dim Sum that Chef Mak served me at his first restaurant in Hong Kong, nor to our other regular rendezvous. What’s next best—and still readily available—are all the good pick-up and some delivered dinners that restore memory flavors. Online and telephone orders will support our local restaurant staffs, expand our ordinary repertoires, remind us of past culinary pleasures, and revive us with childhood comfort foods.

Tavern on Jane
56 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MAY/JUNE 2020
I craved and cooked meatloaf, this week; it’s one of my “stay home, stay safe” staples. I binged on something that I loved as a teen: a leftover, cold meatloaf sandwich with lettuce, sliced onion, and ketchup on soft, taste-the-sugar, Wonder white. Happily, for those who don’t cook it, meatloaf is a weekly special and available for pick-up at Tavern on Jane the cozy and friendly West Village-style Cheers. In a neighborhood brimming with choices at every price point, ethnicity and degree of culinary achievement, I often meet my BFF for a burger, by-the-fire at Tavern. Owner Michael Stewart makes a variety of meatloaf specials on Wednesdays. “We call one ‘Ma Stewart’s,’ because it’s what my mom used to make for her twelve kids; she used oatmeal instead of breadcrumbs and served it Southern style, with sweet tomato gravy, as we do.” Other varieties include jalapeno & barbecue sauce meatloaf and bacon and cheddar meatloaf, with a slice of bacon on each piece and a cheddar cheese sauce topping. The daily soup specials range from beef barley, barley and vegetable, white bean and chorizo, to split pea and kale and garbanzo. Roasted wild North Atlantic salmon is always on the menu. Info: tavernonjane.com; 212-675-2526.
FRENCH
Desolé, most of our French favorites are fermé, so we can’t head downtown to Le CouCou, where Daniel Rose updates traditional bistro fare, as he did at Spring, in Paris’ First Arondissement, or to Lincoln Center where the warmth of Provence is toujours present, seated near the authentic Provençal pottery that Daniel Boulud displays on shelves at Boulud Sud. Happily, for those who share my affection for rotisserie chicken—and regret the loss of Rotisserie Georgette, which served the best—there’s Poulette which offers mouth-watering chicken—and delivery, too. Info: poulettenyc.com; 212-956-9488. Boucherie on Union Square, 7th Avenue South and Christopher Street serves chicken, too, and classic Soupe à l’Onion Gratinée, even Mousse de Foie Gras. Best of all, the restaurant delivers! Info: boucherie.nyc; 212-353-0200.
Boucherie
GREEK
In Manhattan, where top Greek restaurants serve the best authentic imported olives, olive oil and honey, I favor Ousia, the far west side baby sister to Molyvos, which reminds me of a long-ago trip to Greece. Nick Livanos, of the Livanos Group, tells me that Ousia is open for pick-up orders. With a shared whole roasted fish, I opt for the appetizer spreads, including melitzanosalata, a roasted eggplant and garlic dip, and tzatziki (Greek yogurt, cucumber. and dill spread) that’s a cinch to replicate at home and serve with grilled pita—add splash of olive oil and a sprig of oregano). Info: ousianyc. com; 212-333-2000.
Ousia
Foodie friends rave about Souvlaki GR, which has three Manhattan locations. They ordered moussaka and pastitsu (she, a medical doctor, reheated it as added protection against COVID-19) and baklava and added: “We should have eaten while watching Zorba the Greek!” Info: souvalakigr.com; 212777-0116.
ITALIAN
Even if you have stocked up on sauces and can easily boil pasta, time-intensive favorites like fried calamari, baked clams, a whole stuffed artichoke, bresaola, scampi or parmigiana dishes might soothe your spirits and remind you of feasts past. Carmine’s temporarily shut their Times Square location but is open on Broadway for pick-ups. So, mangia! Info: carminesnyc.com, 212-362-2200. The Serafina team has vegetarian options at a multiplicity of locations thoughout the city and ready to handle on-line orders and even deliveries. Info: serafinarestaurant.com; 212702-9898. So, the next time you ask: “What’s for dinner?” consider a neighborhood restaurant that offers pick-up service and order something that’s as good for your emotional well-being as for your taste-buds and good health. Or, try your favorite delivery service: Delivery, DoorDash, Postmates, Seamless and Uber Eats. Another delivery service, Caviar, is gifting a month of free deliveries. And, to all those of you who can, please support your local food banks, City Harvest (cityharvest.org), Rethink Food NYC (rethinkfood.nyc) and all the generous restaurants that have transformed into community kitchens, including Jose Andres’ Mercado Little Spain (littlespain.com). THE WOMAN BEHIND SWEET VEGAN FROM ARCHITECTURE TO HEALTHY TREATS By Andrea Young
he road from architecture to vegan chocolate has had many twists and turns starting with my grandma, Georgia May, back in Indiana. She taught me everything I know about cooking with love and passion, along with a dash of good old-fashioned work ethic. While she cultivated this cooking, I was introduced to the visual creativity of my father who would take me to open houses for properties under his management. Unconventional as it was, I enjoyed imagining the families that had lived in these beautiful old homes. Some of them needed a lot of work, and I could envision beautiful hardwood floors, fresh coats of paint, new kitchens with the latest appliances and, of course, floral curtains in the living room. There at age 8, my love of interior architecture was born.
SKY HIGH DREAMS
Living in Finland as a foreign exchange student, I studied the contemporary architecture of Alvar Aalto. My studies continued in Seattle, and from there, I became an assistant field engineer in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. Finally, I was lured to the world of skyscrapers and diversity: New York City, and there I found my niche. I was accepted at Parsons School of Design, where I studied environmental design and started my career becoming a lead designer at the oldest interior design firm in America. McMillen, Inc. I never abandoned my curiosity about experimenting and creating new recipes. During one of my mother’s visits to NYC, she accidentally fell and had to be hospitalized. As her caretaker, I wanted to provide her with the best nutrition. I was introduced to vegan chef Christine Waltermyer who taught me how to prepare plant-based meals. With improved nutrition and care, my mother’s health improved rapidly. This inspired me to enroll in Christine’s Natural Kitchen Cooking School. While still working full time, I became a certified vegan chef, although my heart always belonged to architecture. 58 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MAY/JUNE 2020
WHIPPING UP A NEW CAREER
When the economy hit a crunch, my design position was reduced to four workdays. During this time, I reflected on my life and realized my most impactful memories were cooking with my grandma. I tested the waters by teaching cooking classes at Integral Yoga and preparing plant-based dishes as a personal chef for a celebrity clientele. Healthy treats, including chocolates, were a popular request. The vegan lifestyle has gained momentum due to bone and heart health benefits and lowering the risk of some cancers. This inspired me to create chocolates that are entirely plant-based, gluten-free, and without dairy, nuts, or soy. I wanted to target a health-conscious audience as well as those with food-based allergies. Besides, I wanted to create a sweet treat that not only promoted a healthy lifestyle but also came with exceptional quality and taste. As part of a career makeover, I also completed a Columbia University/SBDC entrepreneurial program. I believe that this education gave me a healthy start with the right ingredients to succeed. At this point, I traded in my hard hat for a hairnet, and in 2016, Sweet Vegan was born.
A VISUAL EXPERIENCE
My experience in architecture and food science gave me the confidence to create and discover a unique recipe for Sweet Vegan. Thus, Dreamy Bites were born. With distinctive flavor and personality, Dreamy Bites are a vibrant, velvety and creamy ganache dipped in a luxurious 70 percent organic dark chocolate with four distinctly robust flavors including Energizing Espresso, Luscious Lemon, Midnight Passion, and Spicy Ginger. The chocolates are fresh, natural, preservative-free, and contain six recognizable ingredients. Dreamy Bites are artisan handcrafted and made in small batches using only the highest quality organic ingredients. In interior architecture, we visually absorb and make subjective judgments about color and how we feel when we enter a room. Therefore, my design choices for Sweet Vegan packaging had to reflect an eye-catching color scheme that was inviting and memorable. I chose rich chocolate brown, royal purple with touches of green to encourage customers to discover Sweet Vegan. Conscious of the environment, Sweet Vegan packaging is committed to using sustainable materials.
SWEET REWARDS
My company’s mission statement also takes an architectural approach, one that’s very direct and user-friendly: Creating a healthy food-body connection that drives me every day to deliver the best-tasting chocolates—that happen to be vegan. To this day, my customers comment they can’t believe the chocolates are vegan! One significant difference from my years in architecture is the unbelievable amount of joy that I get when I see people trying Sweet Vegan chocolates for the first time. They light up because they taste amazing, and I know the love and care that goes into making every single Sweet Vegan chocolate. It’s these values of creating and my passion that is expressed in every bite. For more information on Sweet Vegan, visit sweetvegan.nyc. • MAY/JUNE 2020 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 59
ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT
ON THE SMALL SCREEN By Jenny Peters
TALES OF FUTURE (AND) PAST HOLLYWOOD Netflix Let Ryan Murphy (American Crime Story, Glee) take you back to a time when Hollywood was a different place, just after World War II ended, in this eight-part miniseries. You’ll find familiar real-life film stars like Rock Hudson, Vivien Leigh and Hattie McDaniel, as well as a host of fictional characters as they all try to make it in Tinseltown. Watch for Jim Parsons, Patti LuPone, Darren Criss, Dylan McDermott and many others in this inside look at the underside of Hollywood’s glamorous façade, circa 1950. THE GREAT Hulu If you loved The Favourite, then The Great is going to make you very happy. For screenwriter Tony McNamara is the force behind The Great, too; this time he’s bringing his twisted take to the tale of Catherine the Great (Elle Fanning). Beginning before her marriage to Russian emperor Peter III and dancing wickedly through her ascension to the throne and beyond, this 10-part series set in the 1700s also stars Nicolas Hoult. SOLAR OPPOSITES Hulu Head into the future with this animated comedy from the guys who brought you Rick and Morty. This decidedly adult-oriented cartoon series follows a family of aliens who choose earth as their new home, only to discover that it might not be quite as hospitable as they had hoped. Rated MA for Mature Audiences, they are not kidding; this irreverent comedy is not for the kiddies. SPACE FORCE Netflix It had to happen, that the Space Force made it to TV satire long before it became the new branch of the U.S. military. With Steve Carell onboard the spaceship as the star and executive producer (along with Greg Daniels of The Office fame at the helm), this one’s guaranteed to be a pretty irreverent look at what our future holds. Lisa Kudrow, John Malkovich, Fred Willard and Noah Emmerich add to the comic insanity here, too. 60 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MAY/JUNE 2020
SNOWPIERCER TNT Bong Joon Ho gets onboard the post-apocalyptic train again in this extended look at the frozen future of mankind that the famed writer-director began with his 2013 movie of the same name. He’s producing this version that stars Jennifer Connolly, Daveed Diggs and Sean Bean as key players on the ever-moving train that holds all the humans left on a now blighted, frozen earth. Set in 2031, this dark future vision isn’t all that far away. UPLOAD Amazon Prime Greg Daniels (The Office) has been busy looking forward, with two series coming out on two different platforms, both comedies set in earth’s future. In Upload, his cast isn’t quite as famous as his Space Force team, but the story is even more out there. Robbie Amell, Allegra Edwards and Andy Allo star in this howto-beat-death comedy set in the not-so-distant future.
REAL PEOPLE, REAL STORIES GENIUS: ARETHA National Geographic Cynthia Erivo, the recent Oscar nominee for Harriet, tackles the story of Aretha Franklin in this newest look at the Genius in out midst. With her gorgeous voice and awards including the Emmy, Tony and Grammy, Erivo is the perfect choice to bring the Queen of Soul’s life to the small screen in this ambitious series that devotes 10 episodes to exploring the lives of the greatest human beings of all time. QUIZ AMC As usual, truth is stranger than fiction in Quiz, the reallife tale of Major and Diana Ing ram, t he coupl e w ho cheated the British TV show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire out of the big prize in 2001. A fascinating tale told in three parts by Oscar nominee Stephen Frears (The Grifters, The Queen), this story of unadulterated greed stars Matthew Macfayden, Sian Clifford and Michael Sheen. DRAMAS, COMEDIES AND ACTION BETTY HBO It isn’t just guys who love to skateboard, as Betty proves. This six-episode series follows a group of determined young women through their rides across New York City, where skating is a male-dominated sport. These females make it happen, no matter what the obstacles. Starring Dede Lovelace, Moonbear, Nina Moran, Ajani Russell and Rachelle Vinberg and directed by Crystal Moselle. EXTRACTION Netflix Your favorite superhero— Thor, aka Chris Hemsworth— takes on another comicbased character in Extraction, as the mercenary known as Tyler Rake. He’s out to rescue the young son of a crime lord in this crazy action thriller based on the Ciudad graphic novel created by Joe and Anthony Russo and Andre Parks. GOLD DIGGER Acorn TV Julia Ormond stars in this dark thriller as a sixtyish woman who has it all—except romance. Enter a handsome, much-younger man (Ben Barnes), and suddenly she’s got a new lease on her life. But when her grown children and ex-husband begin to suspect something dodgy in her new beau, long-buried secrets and lies begin to surface. Set in the beautiful English countryside of Devon, Gold Digger is full of twist and turns as this mini-series plays out in six intense episodes. HIGHTOWN Starz Murder, narcotics abuse and other sordid happenings play out in this new series set in seemingly bucolic Cape Cod. It’s a favorite summer vacation spot for many in Massachusetts and beyond, but this eightpart series turns over the dark underbelly of this famous peninsula known for the Kennedy compound and quaint villages. STARGIRL The CW There’s a new teen superhero in town, and her name is Stargirl. She was born back in 1999 in the DC Comics universe, turned up on Smallville about ten years back and now she’s got her own TV show, with Brec Bassinger in the leading role. She’s an organizer, too, as she forms the Justice Society of America, a group of young superheroes out to protect the world from evildoers. Look for Luke Wilson, Amy Smart and Joel McHale bringing an adult view among all the teenagers. TRYING Apple TV+ When is it funny to be unable to have kids? When you are part of a new sitcom all about a slightly wacky couple whose attempts to procreate have come to nothing. The pair, played by Esther Smith and Rafe Spall, set out to adopt, despite not being the ideal people to take on the responsibility that children bring. Oscar nominee Imelda Staunton costars in this BBC Studios production made just for Apple TV+.
MUSICAL TALES CENTRAL PARK Apple TV+ The people who bring you Bob’s Burgers have a new adult-oriented animated series ready to stream, set amid New York City’s Central Park. It’s a zany mix of musical numbers, weird inhabitants and a family determined to keep the park a haven of nature in the big city. Featuring an all-star cast including Kristen Bell, Stanley Tucci, Tituss Burgess, Josh Gad, Leslie Odom, Jr. and Kathryn Hahn, this one’s for watching after the children are asleep. THE EDDY Netflix Damian Chazelle, the Oscarwinning director who brought us LA LA Land and Whiplash now turns to the small screen with The Eddy, a music-filled drama set in a Paris jazz club. With tunes wafting throughout the intertwining personal stories of the club owner (Andre Holland), the musicians and other people whose stories make up this slice of Parisian life, this eight-part series dances to its own tune. • MAY/JUNE 2020 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 63

ON STAGE BROADWAY STARS SHARE THEIR OFF-TIME STORIES By Lori Zelenko
ith social distancing and isolation being our new normal, we asked Broadway stars to share their personal stories with New York Lifestyles to let us know how they are staying healthy while spending time away from the footlights. We’re hoping to be in the audience to see them on stage again soon, but for now, here are their insights. BEETLEJUICE: THE MUSICAL
Kerry Butler She currently stars as Barbara Maitland, the sweet ghost, in Beetlejuice: The Musical. Her other credits include Belle in Beauty and the Beast, Mean Girls, Rock and Ages, and Little Shop of Horrors. I have been spending my time with my family. With two children, I’m trying to make it fun and reasonable for them. Sometimes we pretend we are going to exotic places like tea in England, dinner in Mexico, next up Italy! I love painting watercolors. I’ve even offered my Instagram followers a free class and found myself painting with people from all over the world on Zoom. Lastly, to keep in shape, I found this old power yoga class I used to do when I was younger. I recently tried to do it and had to stop three times! My goal for the end of quarantine is to be able to get through this yoga class without stopping!”

COME FROM AWAY
Sharon Wheatley Sharon originated the role of Diane and appears on the cast album. Previous Broadway includes Avenue Q, Les Misérables, Cats, and The Phantom of the Opera. I am working hard to find the joy. I do find this is a daily practice with unpredictable results, but mostly I am making the most of the time I have at home with my family. What that looks like is quite simple; with every opportunity, I try to see this period as a story I will tell later in my life. We had fun and learned how to do school at home. We took long walks outside and enjoyed the warm spring air. We made bread from scratch. When the anxiety became too high for the kids, we created ways to combat their fears that felt fun and special, like building an elaborate blanket and pillow fort and allowing the kids to sleep on an air mattress on the floor of our room. Then, we walked the dogs and threw the ball again and again--for our dogs, it was never enough! We drew pictures at dinner and pasted them to the wall marking the number of days we were self-isolating. Most importantly, we started to pray together as a family. We took the time to inform ourselves of what was happening in the world, but we also tried to remember perspective. Even on the worst days, we recognized that the only way out is through, and we made as many choices as we could to find the joy.

SING STREET
Anne L. Nathan Anne was scheduled to star as Sandra in the Broadway musical debut of Sing Street this spring. She has been seen on Broadway in It Shoulda Been You, Once, Sunday in the Park with George, Chicago, Assassins, Thoroughly Modern Millie, and Ragtime. Off-Broadway.
SING STREET - Anne Nathan
I try to give myself a schedule for the day: Walking in the park, tuning in to Governor Cuomo’s daily briefings, practicing the instruments I’ve accumulated over the years, reading, doing an online workout, and lots and lots of cleaning and organizing. I also am a coach and teacher, so I have been seeing some students via Zoom and Skype. In the evening, I usually do a cocktail hour catchup with some of my dear friends and family. Like everyone, I’m also trying to live a healthy lifestyle. Cooking is a big thing! So far, I’ve cooked all the meals which I can promise you is a shocker. I am also working out several times a week. I am trying to be there for my friends and family in a more profound way. I think with our fast-paced city living that can fall by the wayside a bit. I have loved connecting with so many people who have had an enormous impact on me. It’s all about the human connection.
ALTERNATE TINA THE TINA TURNER MUSICAL ©Manuel Harlan, 2019
TINA: The Tina Turner Musical
Dawnn Lewis Dawnn plays Zelma, Tina Turner’s mother, in the hit Broadway musical. But acting is just one of this multitalented entertainer’s accomplishments. She’s also known as singer, voice actress and songwriter. Best known for her role on TV’s sit-com A Different World, she’s been seen in many roles through the years. “I’ve been filling my time with writing music—two new songs so far! And I am doing Zoom and FaceTime chats trying to encourage and pray with people that have tested positive for COVID-19. I’m also preparing postquarantine Youth Program events for my A New Day Foundation and rescheduling the Financial Literacy for the Broadway Community Seminar that was initially scheduled for March 23rd. When the dust settles, I know many in our community will have lots of questions on how to revitalize their finances. For fitness, I’ve been riding my bike and dancing up a storm to the non-stop DJ Parties by D Nice and Quest Love! I’ve also been bingeing on a ton of excellent TV series, that I don’t usually get to watch because of our show schedule. But what’s special is when I’ll be joining my dear friend, actress/director Iona Morris—daughter of Mission: Impossible’s Greg Morris—who has organized a Day of Sweets. Together we will be bringing baked goods to our selfless healthcare workers to show our appreciation for their service and care of those suffering from COVID-19. •

ENTREPRENEUR’S CORNER NIKKI WALTER: HEALTH IS EVERYTHING By Clara Morgan
itness model, sponsored athlete, and personal trainer Nikki Walter has a strong passion for health and wellness, which resonates in our world today, where many of us are at home trying to remain in the best possible health. Nikki is an athlete and fitness model, who with her daughter Addison, aims to help change people’s lives through speaking engagements, workshops, videos posted to their website, and an active podcast available from Apple. As Nikki so eloquently said recently: “Health is everything you do daily. It’s taking care of you and your family. It’s allowing rest days, even when you’re in a slump. It’s calling your loved ones and complimenting others, to spread hope. It’s treating each day as if it were your last, some structure in your days to keep you accountable. If you’re doing all those things, exercising and healthy choices are not a chore—they become habits.”
THE BACK STORY
Growing up in a small town in South Dakota, Nikki started on her journey to healthy living when she discovered her love for running during junior high school. She later combined being a cheerleader with attendance at ballet classes. It was during this time Nikki learned the importance of strength and conditioning, and in her mind, achieved the conviction that her goal one day would be to compete in and win fitness competitions. Nikki Walter’s journey into health and wellness has been impacted by two personal tragedies to test her beliefs. The first came at the end of Nikki’s junior year when her father tragically passed away following an auto accident. As a result, Nikki decided to pursue a degree at a state college to stay close to her two younger sisters and mother. During her college years, while pursuing a Bachelor of Science Degree in Fitness Management at Northern State University, Nikki started teaching group fitness classes. She co-founded The Northern Highlights Dance team, which took time to grow, offering all students an opportunity to dance on the side. After graduating, Nikki moved to Minneapolis to work for Medtronic Wellness Centers, but declined a job offer to return to South Dakota to marry. 68 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MAY/JUNE 2020
TURNING TRAGEDY INTO STRENGTH
Nikki’s most devastating heartbreak was the loss of her 35-year-old husband to leukemia. It was with the help and love of her family and dear friends—and her then 5-year-old daughter Addison— every challenge she faced only served to strengthen her. Following the loss of her husband, and after years of working for the Chamber of Commerce, Nikki finally decided to pursue her goals and compete in fitness competitions. Since then, Nikki has become a six-time NPC first place finisher and competed at Mr. Olympia in the Flex Bikini Model Search, has qualified to compete for the NPC Masters Nationals in 2018. She has been selected a finalist in top competitions earning her a photoshoot with Ironman Magazine. Also, she has appeared at The Arnold Classic and Mr. Olympia. In 2015, Nikki was featured on the site as Bodyspace Member of the Month. Nikki’s passion and knowledge have been recognized with her being published and featured in publications including Oxygen Magazine, TRAIN For Her Magazine, FHM Magazine, Natural Muscle Magazine, as well as appearing on national TV shows like The Today Show. Nikki is also a Health and Wellness columnist who has been featured in PopSugar.com, ApartmentTherapy.com, Active.com, among others. When discussing her struggles on her life’s journey, Nikki sees the most significant challenge as managing change. “Change is terrifying. Be Brave. We have to re-train our thoughts, change our habits, and it is possible! The feeling of you know when you can— follow that instinct and what you are capable of. After taking that leap of faith, the how will happen.”
LIKE MOTHER/LIKE DAUGHTER
To help people at home in the current environment, Nikki Walter has launched clean eating parties that involve small groups learning about food and nutritional changes, which can make a difference. Tying into the clean-Living parties, Nikki’s daughter Addison is also very much involved in the health and wellness lifestyle. Following in the mother’s footsteps, Addison has her mission: To fight childhood obesity. Addison wants to educate kids as well as parents on living a healthy lifestyle with her Kids Kitchen with Addie clips on Instagram and YouTube. Fitbook Jr. and Shields of Strength sponsor her. Nikki’s advice for families is straightforward, “Many parents tell me they don’t know where to start when it comes to educating their kids or creating healthy habits. There is a world full of ideas online. All you need to do is create a model best to suit your family.” Together they have a podcast following with their show F… It which aims to cover all the F’s included in this podcast: Faith, Food, Fitness, and Family. These two speak the real truths with a mother/daughter perspective, about the F’s and non-F’s, as well: encompassing loss, cancer, co-parenting, single parenting, parent/ child relationships, entrepreneurship, and travel. Besides traveling to speak at events, educate people in healthy living, the mother/daughter duo has started a health movement called #ruralfit. Rural fit is a further initiative to improve health and fitness for those who live away from gym facilities and lack access to solid nutritional advice. All in all, this mother-daughter duo is highly motivated to improve the lives of others by promoting a better understanding of health, nutrition, and wellness. As we live in a time where well-being is a priority, their voices are not just entertaining but offer instead some essential thinking about how to live our best. When asked as to her number one piece of advice for handling the current time at home, Nikki is unequivocal and explains: “Go with how you feel. No one wakes up feeling super-motivated every morning, so understand and work with yourself to get the best out of each day.” For more information on Nikki Walter, visit nikkiwalter.com. • MAY/JUNE 2020 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 69

MY NEW YORK STORY LIZZIE ASHER By Anne Grenier
lizabeth “Lizzie” da Trinidade-Asher— better known simply as Lizzie Asher—loves hosting numerous galas and charity events throughout the year. Last year was especially busy for Lizzie who organized with Save Venice’s Young Friends Steering Committee an event to host H.R.H. Prince Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy. The Prince of Venice joined the celebrations to raise awareness of conservation efforts following the horrific floods in Venice. Lizzie has not stood still, and in the current environment has become very involved with close friends launching a non-profit to aid frontline workers across various industries including healthcare workers. New York Lifestyles caught up with Lizzie to understand more about her motivation and passion for giving as a New Yorker. What inspired you to get involved in philanthropy? I do not know that I was inspired per se. Instead, it was always the way of life in my family. Since I was little, my mom taught me a phrase that has become part of my DNA, noblesse oblige. I must admit that I might have lost sight of it upon moving to NYC at first with all the distractions in the city, but my mom soon rectified that and challenged me to identify some causes to which I would dedicate my time and resources.
American Foundation of Savoy Orders and Young Friends of Save Venice Hosted Cocktail Reception in honor of H.R.H. Prince Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy, Prince of Venice ©BFA
While I might have chosen a couple of causes that are immensely close to my heart, such as City Squash and Save Venice, I love to support my friends who are involved with other incredible organizations. All that love and desire to help others has translated into a group that includes Mercedes de Guardiola, Laura Day Webb, and Casey Kohlberg. We have founded Cura Collective after recognizing that communities needed support across many fronts. Workers across industries have lost their jobs and livelihoods at an unprecedented rate, restaurants are collapsing, and small businesses are devastated—while healthcare workers fight to contain the pandemic on the frontlines. All of us have connected with various organizations and our goal is to leverage those affiliations to bring resources together for those in need right now. Cura means to care, and the most powerful care comes from communities coming together to help those who need it the most.

Tell us more about your charities and how supporting them in New York makes a difference. One of the greatest things about NYC is that it is replete with so many generous people. In recent months I was busy cohosting the Parrish Art Museum’s Annual Midsummer After Party. I was part of the Benefits Committee of the Frick’s Young Fellows Ball and New York Botanical Garden Winter Wonderland Ball. Also, I was engaged with various other charities. I celebrated their achievements, such as Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation’s Angel Ball, The White Cross Ball of New York, and SEA’s 25th Anniversary Gala and most recently participated as a Vice-Chair of the Young Collector’s Night of the Winter Show.
Cura Collective, which launched this month, can say that thanks to the generous hearts of the Peninsula Hotel and Oars & Alps, it has delivered to Columbia Presbyterian. Over one thousand toiletry kits were distributed to frontline workers housed in dorm/hotel rooms. Our new non-profit, like other charities in the city, is the lifeblood of so many needed services that complement public sector efforts—and just as importantly provide a safety-net for those with whom we share this incredible city and beyond! Imagine, through City Squash, the generosity of New Yorkers provides after-school opportunities for atrisk children in the Bronx. At the same time, through the work of Save Venice, New Yorkers ensure that the artistic treasures that represent the genius of humanity are preserved. With so much going on, how do you remain in touch with your home culture? It is effortless to stay connected to Peru since I continue to have family there, and Macchu Pisco, the company my sister and I helm, operates out of Peru and the USA. After all, the US-based importing company, which I run, brings to the US the product that my sister produces—a sublime line of piscos, or as I like to say, the cleanest spirits in the world. Why bother with vodka that has zero aroma or flavor or get overwhelmed by botanicals of gin when you can have pisco that sits rights between those categories? Pisco delivers the bouquets of grapes and the taste profile of the fruit, all in an 80-proof format. Most importantly, the grapes embody the terroir of the Pisco Valley, an area in Peru south of Lima that is a desert valley sitting between the foothills of the Andes and the shores of the Pacific Ocean. It is a picturesque oasis that harkens back to a different time. Yet, we have brought to the Valley modern ideas of creating products under the fair-trade ethos and ensuring that our grapes are grown free of agrochemicals to create our hypernatural, Macchu Pisco, La Diabalda and Nusta Piscos. Un Ballo in Maschera – Artista e Musa for Young Friends of Save Venice ©Save Venice
Please share some of your favorite places in the city and times of year. My family has participated in the Bronx Zoo’s Run for the Wild 5-K race the last couple of years, and this year we were very much looking forward to our third consecutive year. However, due to the COVID-19 restrictions, the race was canceled. However, that did not mean that we stopped racing. Instead, we have taken our runs as opportunities to explore the city far and wide. Some of the newer locations have become favorites: Clove Lakes Park in Staten Island, the Cloisters for some heart-pumping hill runs, and to hear the waves crash as you run, try the Rockaway Beach Boardwalk. What have you learned from your time in the city which will always remain with you? One of the greatest lessons that I will always carry from NYC is that you might be born into a family, but here you can create your own. I arrived in NYC with one sister and yet now I boast a plethora of “soul sisters”. I have “soul siblings” as there are some remarkable people that I have met in this city, and whether they continue to live here or not, we continue to be deeply rooted in each other’s lives. I can travel as far as Hong Kong, Dubai, Singapore, and I know that I have friends waiting for me there with whom we can relish about our time here. We will always have the magnificence of NY as the tie that binds us! NYC White Cross Ball ©Samantha Nande/BFA

A NEW YORK RANT THE WANNABE MAYOR THAT NEVER SHOULD HAVE BEEN… By Sean-Patrick M. Hillman
aving been born and raised in Manhattan into a family that advised President Harry Truman, got Jacob Javits elected, amongst many others, and was a neighbor to our beloved former long-time District Attorney Robert Morgenthau, I have a particularly different outlook on our elected officials in the Big Apple. I am a self-professed independent. I am a registered Democrat and have historically voted Republican when the candidate made sense. In other words, I am not your typical New York voter. I don’t vote party. I vote People. So, when Bill deBlasio was elected as Mayor of the City of New York, I was flabbergasted. I had met him when he was a City Hall aide under Mayor David “The Dink” Dinkins in the early 90’s at a party at my parents’ apartment to celebrate Charlie Rose’s 50th birthday (don’t get me started). To say I was unimpressed by the wannabe Mayor is the understatement of the century. When Warren Wilhelm, Jr. (yes, that is Bill deBlasio’s REAL name) was elected, I knew we were screwed. After all, this is a guy who has spent the majority of his life advocating for socialist and communist ideologies. He has spent his entire career in self-service…I mean public service. Has he helped some? I am sure he has. Yet we all know that his career has simply been an attempt to quench his thirst for power. Though it is important to note that in my experience, “progressive” politicians always have a hidden agenda. And with Mayor deBlasio, this could not be more true. Between his campaign finance “mistakes”, city labor contract “mistakes”, “errors” in monitoring the spend on $850M in taxpayer dollars of his wife’s epic failure called THRIVE:NYC (Where is the nearly $1B Mr. Mayor?????) and MANY more questionable actions from City Hall, how this man is not in prison is beyond me…and pretty much every real New Yorker. He belongs in chains, not City Hall. My fellow New Yorkers should have known from day one when this Emperor in New Clothes used the “Tale of Two Cities” position to divide rather than unite, all to ensure his own personal gain of office. While I wish I could say our city is fair to all, I cannot. Are those who have money better off? Certainly they are...as the wealthy are anywhere on Earth. In other words, it is not a New York thing. However, the question remains…does a city that has historically been known as “the melting pot” purposefully bias against these groups? NO. Yet people like Bill deBlasio who claim to be all-embracing and understanding, continue to work their hardest at a divisive rhetoric rather than a uniting one. New York is THE best place in the world to find opportunity, regardless of color or creed. Yet he continually plays the race and class cards to suit his whims. And some are foolish enough to buy into it. Let’s talk further about the “Tale of Two Cities”…for years, the “Dope from Park Slope” (as he has been called) chastised politicians for egregious personal policy spending on things like transportation, office outings for staff, etc. Yet this hypocrite sees fit to waste taxpayer dollars on his security detail and motorcade to leave Gracie Mansion to go to a gym in Brooklyn every morning...only arriving at City Hall sometime around 10:30 or 11am. Despite endless calls for this behavior to stop, the mayor claims he has every right to do so. In other words, “do as I say, not as I do” is his mantra. It was bad enough when deBlasio was elected the first time. But to be re-elected despite allegations of criminal behavior by both he and his administration…it was, as usual, New York voting party rather than People. Though it is important to note that his “re-election” was not a “mandate from the People” as he has claimed. The lowest percentage of voters in the history of this city turned out to re-elect this lying hypocrite. Is that a mandate? Less than 20% of the total population? Um…HELL 72 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MAY/JUNE 2020
NO. Lest we forget that lesser known Republican Nicole Malliotokis was running against deBlasio…and while she would have been an incredible mayor, he won based on name recognition in poorer neighborhoods (that is NOT a personal opinion but rather FACT from the BOE). That’s more of an embarrassment. At this point, I am just praying that this is a wake-up call to everyone in the city that we all need to get off our asses and vote against career politicians who only serve themselves. So what have the taxpayers received for electing this charlatan? Mayor Bill deBlasio has returned New York to the “bad old days” of my childhood in the 70’s and 80’s with crime skyrocketing; quality of life crimes are at record breaking levels; he made it possible for the dreaded squeegee men to return as well as public urination and defecation; despite his campaign promises, horses continue to suffer on our streets; homeless population counts are the highest in history; and anytime he embarrasses himself it is ALWAYS someone else’s fault. What’s next? Is he going to return Times Square to its former “glory”, bringing back the nudie bars and corner drug dealers? He’s already letting convicted criminals out of prison, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility! Now let’s talk COVID-19 in New York City. Throughout this entire unprecedented situation, Mayor Bill deBlasio has been criminally slow to respond, often taking over a week to make even the most basic of decisions. This resulted in Governor Andrew Cuomo having to make decisions for the city that normally the mayor would…and he just cannot help but continue to get into a pissing contest with his nemesis, President Donald Trump. Even deBlasio’s own staff have revolted against him for micro-management (allegedly he knows better than his Communications Director and insists on writing and approving ALL materials that are going out to the public). Think about this…the mayor has consistently made statements in violation of the law and policy (ie keeping the schools closed which he has NO authority to do under New York State law during a Gubernatorial disaster declaration). Because of the mayor’s gross inaction, and the lackadaisical manner with which he runs the city, thousands are now dead. And the count continues to rise. Herein lies the point…since neither the Attorney General of the State of New York, nor the Board of Elections, is interested in holding our “esteemed” mayor accountable for his crimes, WE most certainly should. Once this pandemic is over and life begins to get back to normal (or as normal as it can be in the City That Never Sleeps), we need to ensure that Mayor Bill deBlasio never achieves elected office again for his eight years of lies, corruption, theft and cronyism. • Disclaimer: The opinions expressed in this article are those of the author. TIME OUT WITH…
VIRGINIA BELL: A STAR AMONGST THE STARS By Bailey Beckett
rue story: every week I produce a podcast, and at the beginning of 2019, I welcomed Virginia Bell, a world-renowned astrologer, as a guest to talk about what was ahead. Within the first 20 minutes, she warned of a future crisis based on alignments of the planets. She and the astrology community foresaw there would be a global crisis in January, when two planets Saturn and Pluto would become conjunct (make exact contact). There was also be a full moon eclipse two days earlier. That and the planet Uranus—the great disruptor—would be going into direct motion is a lot of powerful energy. “The year 2020 will not be an easy one, nor will the world be ever the same,” she told me. Listening back on it, I get chills. I recently welcomed Virginia to go more in-depth. She explained there is a correlation to crises past: wars, economic collapse, 9/11. “The planets don’t cause these, they expose them,” she said. Though astrologers did not surmise it would be a virus, they knew something big was ahead of us. While I was shocked to hear this, I was not surprised to hear it from Virginia, who I have known for 14 years. She is one of the foremost astrologers in the U.S., with a keen ability to study dates, history, and alignment and translate it to compelling, practical, and sensical explanation. She has studied the discipline for years. Her best-seller Midlife is not a Crisis: Using Astrology to Thrive in the Second Half of Life is a must-read. I sat down with Virginia to learn more about her incredible journey. She came bearing hope: “The world will survive and thrive,” she says. “It always has. It always will.
How did you find astrology? Astrology has always been in my life, at least in a peripheral way. As a teen, I was obsessed with Dell Horoscope Magazine. I was miserable at home and was searching for some guidance. During my twenties, I was fascinated with psychics, card readers, and astrologers. When I started my restaurant (in the ‘70s), I consulted with an astrologer about the best date and time to open. In the ‘80s, I even had an astrologer on staff; he ate in exchange for readings. Back then, I thought astrology was just about predictions. I didn’t realize how deep, rich, and profound it was. How do you explain astrology to people? Astrology is a tool and like therapy, coaching, and counseling, it can be extremely valuable. But astrology offers another perspective for it’s a symbolic language and is therefore able to elude the cunning ego—so prone to judging and rejecting. It speaks to the soul. The year 2019 seems to have been a tough year for a lot of people. Can you explain why? First, let me just say that the planets don’t cause things to happen; they expose what’s already there. For instance, in 2008 when Pluto entered the sign Capricorn (business, banking, corporations), the economy crashed. Pluto didn’t cause that but merely exposed what was going on in the government, banks, and corporations. In the spring of 2019, Saturn and Pluto in the sign of serious Capricorn, were traveling very close together. You could feel something big was brewing and, at the same time, breaking down. Karmic Saturn is demanding and relentless; Pluto is the planet of birth, death, and transformation. Whenever these two planets are joined, old structures collapse, and life changes. A lot of people attribute their characteristics to their astrological sign. How accurate is that? The sun is the gravitational center of the universe; it’s what holds everything together. On a psychological level, it’s what keeps us together. It represents our life force, our energy, and what we signed up to do. The sun is the most important planet in our chart, which is why people identify with their sun sign so strongly. But it’s not the only planet. That’s why an in-depth astrology reading gives you more information and nuance. What is the most important detail someone should take away from their astrology experience? Many people come for readings during a difficult time, a breakup, loss of a job, or simply feeling stuck and not knowing why. Astrology can shed light on why this is happening and what a person needs in terms of skills and attitude to navigate it successfully. Life is a journey and astrology always provides a road map.
