DR. STEPHEN T. GREENBERG CONFIDENCE BUILDER EXTRAORDINAIRE By AP Connolly | Photography by Neil J Tandy

T

he Award Winning Celebrity Plastic Surgeon Stephen T. Greenberg, M.D., F.A.C.S., has over 30 years of expertise and has performed thousands of surgical procedures. As a leader in cosmetic plastic surgery, Dr. Greenberg prides himself on combining his advanced surgical techniques with cutting-edge technologies at his state-of-the-art facilities from Manhattan to The Hamptons and beyond. When asked about his philosophy on plastic surgery and beauty, he states, “I want my patients to feel good about themselves. I always strive to provide the most natural-looking results coupled with minimal recovery time. Many of my patients tell me after their procedure that they have newly found confidence, which has prompted them to go for that new job or promotion, get back into the dating scene, and start wearing the clothing they always dreamed of. Often, they tell me that no one can pinpoint that they have had a procedure. They only notice how refreshed, youthful, and vibrant they look.” A DRIVING FORCE Dr. Greenberg is passionate about helping his patients’ outer appearance to reflect their inner beauty. Seeing the uptick of people seeking cosmetic procedures, Dr. Greenberg believes that self-esteem has been the driving force for his patients. “It always amazes me to see the difference in how patients see themselves from their initial consultation to their postoperative check-up. They walk taller, smile brighter, and I see a sparkle that wasn’t there before.” Dr. Greenberg is seeing a spike in requests for his ultra-modern Rapid Recovery techniques to reduce downtime for face, breast, and body procedures. Eyelid and facelift procedures for both men and women are seeing an uptick, states Dr. Greenberg; “People want to look as young as they feel and are now taking steps towards meeting that goal.” Dr. Greenberg’s offices offer everything from injectables and fillers to laser treatments, breast augmentation, liposuction, facelifts, and nose jobs. These offices are perfect for a lunchtime mini lift or a more extensive, life-altering facial or body transformation. The doctor pioneered his Micro-Mini Lift performed under local anesthesia. He states that he has his micro-mini and many mini-face lift patients’ restaurant ready in a matter of days. Incorporating a facial fat transfer has resulted in a more dramatic outcome with a youthful glow. “Over the years, I have enjoyed treating thousands of women and men with a personal and individualized approach. I am part surgeon and part artist, and I appreciate the opportunity to play an important role in the lives of my patients.”

JAMES GRAY ROBINSON FROM STRESS TO SUCCESS

H

By Patricia Canole I Photography by Ann Landstrom

ave you ever wondered why living a successful life may also make you feel more stressed? This happened to James Gray Robinson, a third-generation trial attorney specializing in family law and civil litigation for 27 years in North Carolina. Burned out, he quit in 2004 and spent the next 19 years doing extensive research and innovative training to help others facing burnout and personal crises. He studied with recognized spiritual healers and leaders and is certified in dozens of recognized effective modalities. Today, Robinson guides hundreds of private clients with his wellness, transformation, and success strategies. In addition to the energy treatments, he trains his clients through self-mastery to take responsibility for their condition with neurobiology techniques called brain hacking, which help release the disease’s symptoms and causes. Brain hacking is a scientific way to enhance mental performance and emotional fulfillment through simple physical techniques that regulate the Autonomic Nervous System. He offers coaching for mental, emotional, business, and relationship challenges to provide a full range of healing. The pioneer has also published articles in professional journals and frequently speaks on avoiding burnout, depression, and addiction. Robinson regularly teaches how to create success and happiness while releasing stress and negativity. He aims to empower everyone to claim their brilliance to awaken their excellence fully. Robinson’s dedication will always be to help those struggling with anxiety and burnout by guiding them to a more fulfilling lifestyle. Many studies have shown the damage an overactive nervous system can have on the human body. Although this system helps us respond to stressful situations and provides our body with adrenaline and cortisol to face those situations, it can also cause many health issues. Whether it be cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, or depression, many studies have explored the negative consequences of an overactive nervous system. His coaching program, called the Shift, is a one-onone session that helps clients discover the hidden reasons behind their obstacles. In just a few hours, Robinson initiates a deep self-evaluation process that involves exploring your personal history and offering two additional sessions where various healing modalities are applied. Besides the Shift program, Robinson offers the Solution for addressing doubts and fears, while the Change Your Mind package and Vision Session provide new perspectives and self-evaluations for future or current obstacles. We recently spoke with James Gray Robinson to learn more about brain hacking and achieving a complete life. 16 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2023

Tell us about your backstory and how it brought you to this career path in healing? As a boy, I often read Le Morte d’Arthur (the stories of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table). The tales of Merlin, knights, and chivalry struck a chord in my soul, and I fantasized about doing magic, being a knight, and doing good for the people. As I got older, I never forgot the notion of being able to use energy to help others. I never wanted to be a lawyer, but because I loved my parents, who insisted I do so, I became a lawyer. I was the third generation in my family to practice law. I wanted to be an OutwardBound counselor. Living outdoors and helping troubled children find themselves in nature was another dream of mine. I was successful at practicing law and was highly rated by my peers. I won numerous awards and was often asked to teach Continuing Legal Education courses. I was even asked to produce a movie for the State Bar on ethics, which was very popular. However, I was hiding a secret. The millions of dollars I earned did not compensate for the stress I felt doing something I hated. Eventually, the stress wore me out, and I had a nervous breakdown. I was physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausted. I was going through my second divorce; I felt unappreciated and unsupported. I quit my trial practice and went on a spiritual journey to find out what happened to me. In 2004, we didn’t know much about burnout. I was under the care of a psychologist, and it didn’t help. I wanted to know why my brain sabotaged me if I was so successful. I came to know three internationally known spiritual healers over time and learned many things about the human spirit and using energy to alter reality. Along the way, I have had five near death experiences. Those experiences connected me to the spiritual energy I discovered, allowing me to heal others. Living with spiritual leaders helped me hone those skills to the extent that I traveled the world conducting healing clinics. I witnessed hundreds of people recover from various diseases and injuries in South America, the United Kingdom, Europe, the Middle East, Hong Kong, and Australia. I am truly blessed. What is the Autonomic Nervous System? Share with us the process of Brain Hacking. Provide a few examples of how someone can use Brain Hacking to impact their day-to-day life and reality? Over millions of years, the brain has evolved from just a couple of cells regulating other cells into the complex organ we have today. From an evolutionary standpoint, the oldest part of the brain is the Autonomic Nervous System, which is in the brain stem and medulla. It regulates our body and organs without us having to use conscious thought. There are two aspects of the Autonomic Nervous System: the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system. These have two completely difference effects on the body. The Sympathetic Nervous System is the fight or flight response. I call it the Warrior and when activated, the body pumps adrenalin and cortisol into our body to make us faster and stronger. All available energy goes to the muscles while our digestion, frontal lobe, and breathing shut down. Conversely, the Parasympathetic Nervous System is the feel-safe response. I call this the Guru. It causes the body to produce melatonin, serotonin, endorphins, and oxytocin. We relax and can be happy. We can dream, plan, fall in love, connect, and communicate. Civilization was created when the Guru was activated. Initially, tens of thousands of years ago we could survive because the Warrior would engage instantly when we perceived a threat from a predator or an enemy. Slow people didn’t survive. The people who instantly reacted to stress did survive. Today we don’t have predators springing out to kill us. However, the Autonomic Nervous System did not evolve as fast as our society’s evolution so it can’t tell the difference between a physical threat and other kinds of threats. Threats like financial difficulties, divorce, angry customers, bosses, and personal trauma can cause our Warrior to engage. The Warrior is very detrimental to our health. It should turn off after the danger is gone. However, with today’s stressors it can stay activated for years. The longterm effects of adrenalin and cortisol are well documented. Our immune system is compromised; we gain weight, make poor decisions, and create increased stress. NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2023 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 17

That is what happened to me. The Warrior was activated 24/7 due to the stress of doing what I hated, and the anxiety associated with practicing law. When the Warrior is activated too long, the body suffers, eventually burning out. We can only control the Autonomic Nervous System with our conscious mind if we are trained to do so. The longer it stays on, the harder it is to turn it off. We must use reverse engineering to turn it off. Stress tends to feed on itself, so we must bypass the Autonomic Nervous System to turn on the Guru.

What can you do to turn stress into success? When we shift out of the Warrior into the Guru, we can access areas of the brain that shut down when the Warrior is activated. We can relax and find solutions to issues we couldn’t see when the Warrior is activated. We can use intuition, imagination, and creativity to guide and connect with others. Life becomes much easier and more productive when we can connect and collaborate with others. Civilization became possible with the evolution of the Guru.

I train executives, professionals, and people from all walks of life on how to turn off the Warrior and turn on the Guru. There are physical techniques that do this quickly and easily. The first technique is to smile. Smiling will activate our facial nerves which are connected to our cranial nerves. Cranial nerves are connected to our Vagus nerve, which connects the Autonomic Nervous System in the brain to our internal organs, such as our lungs, heart, digestive tract, diaphragm, liver, pancreas, and other organs critical for life. When we smile, we activate the Vagus nerve which research has shown is the connection between the brain and our internal organs. When the Warrior is activated, the Vagus nerve deregulates. When the Vagus nerve is activated, the Guru is activated. Another technique is singing or humming. The vocal cords are located next to the Vagus nerve, so singing or humming activates the Vagus nerve and, hence, the Guru. That is why we sing or hum when happy; it makes us feel good. This is also why spiritual people like to chant mantras aloud, to relax and clear their minds. When we smile or sing/hum regularly throughout the day, we activate the Guru. When we are happy, we have a different life experience than when we are stressed. When the Warrior is activated, we look for problems. When the Guru is started, we can find solutions. How does the brain secretly sabotage our lives? When the Warrior is activated, our logical brain shuts down. We become angry, stressed, or afraid. We make bad decisions because our logic centers are impaired. When our fight or flight response is engaged, it is impossible to find solutions. We are in survival mode, every gender for itself. Adrenalin and cortisol compromise our immune system. Cortisol traps fat in our body and we become unhealthy. Why do you believe that all professionals should be aware of the Autonomic Nervous System? You selected this topic for your TEDx Talk. How do you believe the education around the Autonomic Nervous System will impact professionals? The most common complaint I hear from professionals is the amount of stress with which they must deal. They assume that difficulties at work or home cause stress. The Warrior’s response to day-to-day events causes stress. If people understood that it is the brain’s survival response and not the events we are witnessing, we can do something about it and control our stress. By utilizing the techniques, I teach, professionals can gain healthy perspectives of their work and life. By changing their views, they change their reality.

Tell us about your project: Beyond Physical Matter. How do you believe it will impact the world, and what do you hope this film contributes to society? Beyond Physical Matter is a documentary exploring the latest technologies and techniques that expand our understanding of the human body, health, consciousness, growth, and well-being. We interview cutting edge scientists, healers, musicians, inventors, businesspeople and thought leaders to discover what is next in complementary medicine, healing, business, and well-being. Starring with me in the movie are Dr. Steven Schwartz (a visionary technology designer, sound alchemist, and regenerative medicine expert), Dr. Antoine Chevalier (an International Lecturer, published author, researcher, functional medicine practitioner and advisor to the White House since 2001), Jason Estes (a pioneer of quantum field technology), Dr. Milton Howard (a pioneer of the use of music in healing), and Dr, John Sachtouras (one of the most successful businessmen on the planet and a pioneer in network marketing) plus other thought leaders and personal growth experts. As a co-producer, along with Don and Melinda Bowers and others, this film breaks new ground by offering innovative technology to heal and optimize human potential. The Bowers have produced over 18 films. This film will catalyze new achievements in healing, wellness, lifestyle, and growth to take life to the next level of imagination and manifestation and expand the boundaries of what is possible for human achievement. It will empower its viewers to achieve success on all levels of endeavor. If someone would like to collaborate with you, explain that process. How do they walk in, and how do they spend their time with you? My program, The Shift, can be accomplished face to face or remotely online. It is six hours long, with three two-hour sessions. The first session is an in-depth interview to determine the cause of the issues the client wants to be healed. The second session is a guided meditation that helps the client release negative blocks to healing. The client will receive a copy of this meditation to help them grow and heal. The third session involves the healing itself, based on a lifetime of training and experience. I am certified in over 30 modalities and personal growth techniques proven to heal illness and block personal success. What are the three things you wish you knew before starting this venture? I wish I had discovered the power of the brain before I burned out twenty years ago. Back then psychology and mental health experts did not fully understand the interplay between the brain and body from an emotional and mental health aspect. When I discovered the advances in neurobiology which allows for Brain Hacking, my life completely changed. Also, I wish I knew how much this information needs to be shared and disseminated to people who are stressed and struggling with their careers, relationships and mental and emotional wellness. When people can master their brains through Brain Hacking, they can heal and achieve anything. What drives James Gray Robinson? I have a burning desire to help others suffering mentally, emotionally, and physically. When I can help people heal their pain and suffering, I feel like Merlin the Wizard, who helped the legendary King Arthur bring peace and prosperity to their people. Through my healing and philanthropy, I have also helped thousands of people to a better life and expand their horizons. How do you relax? I use the techniques which I teach to turn off the Warrior and turn on the Guru throughout the day. I also spend as much time with my beautiful and talented wife Linda Giangreco as possible, as well as my three Pomeranians—Squeak, Samson, and Scout. I exercise, play golf, read, and travel. Yes, my childhood dreams have come true! For more information on James Gray Robinson, visit jamesgrayrobinson.com

DR. LAURA PURDY REVOLUTIONIZING MODERN MEDICINE

A

By Patricia Canole | Photography by Mike Yi

fter a brief period as a concert pianist and overseeing the health of thousands of U.S. soldiers as an Army physician, Laura Purdy, MD/MBA, continues to inspire with her endless passion for revolutionizing modern wellness. In contrast, many might consider her diversion from music to medicine surprising. Dr. Purdy—known as “America’s Favorite Doctor” and “the voice of the digital healthcare revolution”—made it her mission to serve others, working to improve the medical industry and patient experience. Having been licensed to practice in all 50 states (including Washington, D.C.), she remains unwavering in her commitment to leaving the world a far better place.

First introduced to telehealth during her military service, Dr. Purdy quickly realized the potential of emerging technology to redefine how healthcare is delivered and received. Today, her pioneering efforts proactively propel a new era of “concierge medicine,” marked by a determination to put patient needs first in pursuing transparent, affordable, and accessible healthcare. She leads the charge in both word and deed, managing a panel of over 25,000 patients nationwide while advising hundreds of telehealth startups and serving as Medical Director of her AFD brand. A trusted authority and sought-after expert in her field, she has received widespread acclaim. She has consistently been featured in global media outlets for her efforts to shape the future of telehealth and virtual wellness. We met with Dr. Purdy to learn more about the woman behind the historic telemedicine movement. One might call your early career transition “staggering,” with a rapid switch from professional music performance to military service and, eventually, the voice of virtual health. What motivated you toward medicine—and telemedicine in particular? My entire life, I’ve always felt a desire to serve and lead people. My father taught me by example to persist in being kind and leading with heart, no matter the situation. The piano performance gave me an outlet to serve people through the shared language of music, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that I could do more to influence the lives of those around me directly. My transition into military medicine allowed me to do just that: help more people in immediately tangible ways. During my 14 years as an Army physician, I served thousands of active duty and training military soldiers and their families. I was also afforded the opportunity to spearhead the Army’s implementation of new telemedicine networks. Using this advanced technology, I was able to provide life-saving services to soldiers across enemy lines, as well as civilian patients caught in the crosshairs of the Ukrainian conflict. As one of the first physicians to encounter this emerging method of care, I had a frontrow seat to experience how it can affect and improve lives on a global scale - and that is the exact mission I’m working toward today. How did you get to be “America’s Favorite Doctor?” Was it a goal, or did it happen organically? “America’s Favorite Doctor” was a moniker given to me by my peers and colleagues several years ago because of my persistently positive attitude and ability to connect with people—and it stuck! These days, branding yourself is a key part of any business model. So, when we considered introducing my approach to a broader audience, “America’s Favorite Doctor” seemed like the most organic and authentic fit.

Our readers would love to know more about your practice, AFD — can anyone call for a consultation? At this point, anyone can book a virtual visit with me simply by clicking “Become a Patient” on my website at drlaurapurdy.com. The AFD brand also encompasses several medical spas and clinics we are establishing nationwide over the next few years, with our first location opening in Brentwood, Tennessee. These are intended to offer a new model of concierge medicine, with patient-first services provided by trained, licensed, AFD-approved physicians and staff. Meanwhile, besides overseeing these locations under the title of Medical Director, I will continue outreach efforts nationwide to help usher in a new, advanced era of affordable, accessible medicine for all. You belong to an elite group of physicians licensed across all 50 states. What is this licensing process like, and how does it serve your mission of bringing telehealth to the world? It’s a challenging endeavor, particularly when no support systems are in place to guide physicians in their efforts. Instead, it more often seems like our traditional institutions have made us the enemy, forced to tread a fine line between adequately serving the needs of our patients and avoiding costly litigation. Right now, the process is long and complicated, dictated by the vastly different laws governing each state. For this reason, only one percent of physicians, including myself, have successfully received nationwide licensure. Even today, I must work hard to actively stay on top of changing licensure requirements and archaic legislation that keeps the telehealth movement from reaching its full potential. To me, however, this is a worthwhile battle to fight to enact changes that can serve today’s modern society (patients and providers) more effectively and efficiently. Multi-state licensure allows me to provide care to patients nationwide via telehealth platforms. It sets a new standard for other physicians who seek to play a vital part at the forefront of this movement. How has telehealth revolutionized healthcare? What do you see as a concern? In short, telehealth streamlines the process of providing quality care to patients using the power of the Internet. Providers can meet with patients anywhere that a patient can connect to an online platform, allowing providers to serve a greater number of patients while also enabling patients to seek care from the comfort of home—or anywhere they roam. This diminishes patient care costs associated with transportation or time missed at work. It also supports providers in managing their patient panel more efficiently without being tied to the limits of a physical office. Physicians can serve more patients while managing a healthier work-life balance and staving off the burnout we are currently seeing in record numbers. I do realize that virtual methods have their limitations. Some patients prefer in-person visits, and some need care that requires it. Several complex laws limit our ability to expand telehealth as quickly as we would like. However, I believe we will start to see changes over the next decade that will enable us to apply advanced technological solutions more readily to today’s biggest healthcare challenges.

Now that we’ve arrived at the holiday season, what must the public do to avoid illness? As in every colder season, people will gather more indoors. This requires us all to be more vigilant about washing hands, covering sneezes, and staying home when sick to avoid the rapid spread of germs. Cold air also tends to dry out the sinuses, making the body more susceptible to these invisible invaders. I always recommend to patients, whether in cold season or not, to prioritize rest and recovery. Take good care of your body daily to help it perform at its best!

I’ve put people I trust in place to help me manage the various tasks associated with each sphere of responsibility. And I trust myself, most of all, to make the right decision when allocating my time and attention where it’s needed.

You serve in several professional roles, including physician, medical advisor, and business strategist. Do you have a favorite? I love them all! My brain is always active and planning what’s next, so I genuinely enjoy changing lanes and managing the range of tasks associated with each of my professional roles. I also love that each enables me to meet new and different people from so many different walks of life!

What has been the most memorable experience? Seeing the telehealth-based changes we’ve dreamed about begin to come to fruition. As I travel the country and speak to audiences about our vision for the future of healthcare, I see faces light up when they start to imagine what can be: a more transparent, effective, efficient, and patient-centered model that serves our needs. Through our online platform and the opening of our AFD clinics, we are advancing a future that supports healthier, more hopeful lives for the next generation. It still gives me goosebumps when I talk about it!

How would you describe yourself? I am a go-getter, a self-starter, and a revolutionary. How do you find work-life balance? I am taking it one moment and one day at a time and trusting my ability to know what’s best. No matter who you are, finding balance in a busy world like ours is always a challenge, with so many priorities pulling at you every minute of the day. It’s helpful to stay focused on what’s most important to me at any given moment and pursue that goal without the guilt and fear so many of us carry about what others think we should be doing. I know myself; I know my business; I know my family.

What has been the biggest challenge in your work? It is pushing for change against the momentum of a medical industry built for an old way of doing things. Progress is slow, but it’s happening. All we can do is keep trying because telehealth is the way of the future.

What is your dream for the future—where do you see your company in the next five years? As we open our clinics and continue to expand our patient panel, my vision is that AFD’s model will catch on and inspire other emerging virtual wellness platforms. I plan to continue advising and supporting new ventures in this space, which holds untold potential for uplifting our national and global approach to wellness. A LANCASTER COUNTY ESCAPE DISCOVER PENNSYLVANIA DUTCH COUNTRY

I

By Karen Jones | Photos Discover Lancaster.com

magine a winter getaway immersed in the pastoral Pennsylvania Dutch countryside, where Amish farmlands, historic covered bridges, festive small towns, antiques, boutiques, and myriad culinary choices converge. In that case, it may be time to visit Pennsylvania’s Lancaster County.

About a 3-hour drive from Manhattan, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, is best known for its thriving Pennsylvania Dutch Amish community, a religious sect that forgoes electricity and most—but not all—modern conveniences. Fans of the Harrison Ford movie Witness will recognize the scenic expanses of storybook farmlands, horse-drawn buggies, and simple dress of the Amish families whose way of life has changed little in 300 years. But this is not the only story in Lancaster, which also offers vibrant small towns and trendy cityscapes ready to roll out the holiday cheer. GETTING TO KNOW THE AMISH For a peak behind the Amish curtain and one that mixes deep regional history with the reality of today’s working farms, try the “Unique Amish Immersive Experience.” Led by guides with close ties to the community, you’ll visit a dairy farm creamery, and movie buffs take note of the original house and barn used in the movie Witness. Your guide will also introduce Amish family members who greet the tour. You’ll note that the Amish are very reserved. So, ask first what can be photographed. You will also notice the lack of overt holiday decorating. Amish families celebrate the holidays more privately but share their bounty of delicious “old-fashioned” sugar cookies and other baked delights with the local shops.

Be sure to include lunch at Millers Smorgasbord in Ronks. Food purist alert: No visit to Pennsylvania Dutch country is complete without indulging in this guilty pleasure, especially with children. Serving regional favorites like fried chicken, mac & cheese, and shoo-fly pie since 1929, Millers has plenty of stick-to-the-ribs fare. Ask for a window table with views of the adjacent farmland. THE BRIDGES OF LANCASTER Amish country’s winding two-lane back roads are shared with horse-drawn buggies, and it’s easy to slowly slip back in time while driving past one-room schoolhouses, silos, barns, and the county’s historic wooden covered bridges. These lovingly preserved denizens of a quieter era each have their history and are a delight to explore. Sometimes referred to as “kissing bridges” where couples might sneak a kiss inside, there is an undeniable romance in traversing the sturdy wooden floors of these 19th-century structures built to join communities, which they still do. For a half-day exploration, try the “Lititz & Its Countryside” tour, offering five classic bridges built between 1850-1890.

NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2023 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 47

SMALL TOWNS & CITYSCAPES The “Lititz” bridge tour concludes near the surprisingly charming town of Lititz, packed with eateries, boutiques, and shops. Unlike the Amish farms, Lititz is resplendent in festive seasonal décor, with quaint historic streets made for holiday strolling. Make sure to visit Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery (circa 1861), whose tour includes a pretzel rolling lesson, or purchase one at the shop counter, baked fresh every 10 minutes. For lunch at a local favorite try the Bulls Head Public House. Better-known Pennsylvania Dutch towns such as Bird-in-Hand and Intercourse feature more touristy attractions with plenty of kitsch, but hidden gems abound. Quilt enthusiasts should visit The Old Country Store in Intercourse, featuring exquisite local hand-made quilts. At the same time, Barry’s Car Barn is such an over-the-top labor of love it’s worth a visit, especially for fans of classic American “muscle cars.” The Car Barn showcases 50 vintage beauties courtesy of collector Barry Baldwin. Start your engines, please. On a quest for antiques? Stroll the historic town of Strasburg, where the Strasburg Antique Market is within walking distance of the Strasburg Railroad, an irresistible vintage steam train attraction. It’s hard to beat climbing aboard a vintage railroad car and settling in for a restful 45-minute ride through the Amish country especially with children in tow. SARASOTA

ADVENTURES BEYOND THE BEACH

L

By Jeff & Stephanie Sylva

ocated 60 miles south of Tampa on Florida’s West Coast, Sarasota and her string of 8 islands boast some of the best beaches in Florida and the whole U.S. Sure, everyone enjoys a day at the beach relaxing in the warm sunshine. But you also want to fill your days with activities. And the Sarasota area has many vital attractions and adventures to keep you and your family busy for days.

WATER EVERYWHERE One must activity is to take a guided kayak tour of the Lido Key mangrove tunnels with Kayaking SRQ. Even if you have never kayaked, you will have a safe and enjoyable experience paddling Lido Key’s hidden gem. With one of Kayaking SRQ’s expert guides providing instruction and a wealth of information about the mangroves and the origin of the tunnels, you will quickly feel at ease on your kayak. And be prepared for some great photo opportunities. Get a close-up look at many marine animals with a visit to Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium. Mote is not only an aquarium with various exhibits, but it is also a working marine laboratory. As a result, Mote offers a blend of entertainment and education. One of its exhibits is the 135,000-gallon open-water Shark Zone. Here, you can learn about these fascinating creatures based on the research Mote has been doing on sharks since its opening in 1955. Other exhibits include manatees, stingrays, sea turtles, playful sea otters, and many more marine animals. Spend two fun-filled hours on a floating tropical island with LeBarge Tropical Cruises. The boat’s open-air top deck is outfitted with palm trees and party lights. The Tropical Sunset Cruise creates a perfect atmosphere to soak in the beauty of the setting sun while listening to the live music of Jimmy Buffet-styled entertainers. LeBarge Tropical Cruises also offers a variety of other cruises. TRANQUIL GARDENS After all the fun on the Gulf of Mexico and Sarasota Bay waters, enjoy a peaceful stroll through the tranquil paths and beautiful gardens of Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. Located on the shores of Sarasota Bay in Downtown Sarasota, the parks provide a tropical oasis in an urban setting. The Downtown Campus comprises 15 acres and includes the only botanical garden in the world dedicated to the display and study of epiphytic orchids, bromeliads, gesneriads, ferns, and other tropical plants. The 30-acre Spanish Point Campus, located about 10 miles south of Downtown, showcases native Florida plants.

DISCOVER SARASOTA Take some time to experience the city. Offering ten different tour themes, Discover Sarasota Tours allows you to explore exactly what you want about Sarasota. There’s a City Sightseeing Tour, where you can learn Sarasota’s history, culture, and neighborhoods. Or maybe you are intrigued by the history of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus— there’s a tour for that. There are museums, gardens, and the stately home of John and Mable Ringling. This extravagant Ringling legacy includes the Ringling Museum of Art, the Circus Museum, Ca’d’Zan—the Ringling’s magnificent home on Sarasota Bay’s shores—and the beautiful Bayfront Gardens.

CONSERVATION VENUES It’s not precisely the circus, but has lions, tigers, and bears. Big Cat Habitat and Gulf Coast Sanctuary is an eastern Sarasota County animal reserve. The non-profit sanctuary is a permanent home for dozens of exotic animals, offering a placement for needy animals. The main attractions here are the lions and tigers—and the unusual species of ligers and tigons (the result of mating lions with tigers). Visitors can also enjoy a petting zoo and wildlife shows. Another unique venue is the Myakka Elephant Ranch—a non-profit conservation center, focused on educating guests on elephant conservation. Guests can participate in primary care of the elephants, such as preparing meals, feeding, and bathing. Currently, the ranch cares for three elephants, two Asian and one African. Keeping your activity outdoors is easy because Sarasota County has many state parks, preserves, and parks offering plenty of fishing, hiking, kayaking, walking, biking, and bird-watching opportunities. Myakka River State Park offers 58 square miles of unspoiled wetlands, prairies, hammocks, and pinelands. Oscar Scherer State Park has fifteen miles of walking/hiking trails and ten miles of biking trails. The very popular 18.5-mile-long Legacy Trail, a paved walking and biking path running from Sarasota to Venice, runs directly through this park. Sarasota’s Celery Fields offers over 300 acres of wetlands with opportunities to spot more than 200 bird species.

Be sure to experience Pop Stroke—the experiential golf and casual dining venue offering two unique putting courses designed by Tiger Woods and his TGR Design team. The putting courses are built entirely with synthetic turf, incorporating fairways, bunkers, and rough just as you would see on a traditional golf course. When you head to Sarasota be sure to experience its vibrant Arts & Culture offerings. Known as “Florida’s Cultural Coast,” Sarasota has a wealth of museums, art galleries, and performing art venues. There are nine performing arts organizations less than a mile from the center of Sarasota. BRIGHT LIGHTS, BIG CITY WHAT’S HAPPENING NOW IN LAS VEGAS

L

By Meryl Pearlstein

as Vegas is on a roll. And I’m not just talking about the roll of the dice. Sin City hits the jackpot with new developments in attractions, hotels, restaurants, and things to keep you motivated and moving as you navigate the Strip and beyond. And, yes, the casinos are alive if you’re feeling the gambling vibe. Here are some exciting happenings recently opened or planned this year. RESTAURANTS & BARS Reserve a table at these new dining spots to sample some of the country’s finest restaurants by the most celebrated chefs. Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino is hot, hot, hot with new restaurants. Retro by Voltaggio is a culinary residency by celebrity chefs Michael and Bryan Voltaggio. Channeling the vibes of the 80s and 90s—decades now considered retro (!)—the menu dances around dishes anchored in the past like VoltaggiOs, the chefs’ fun takes on a childhood pasta fave and chicken pot pie fritters. Music is appropriately flashback so you can sing along to prom night favorites like Blondie, the Cars and Mariah Carey as you dine. Steak is a thing in Las Vegas. Also, at Mandalay Bay, Chef Michael Mina adds to his empire with a casual version of the steakhouse. StripSteak’s menu features modern takes and Asian fusions resulting in dishes like Duck Fat Prime Rib with a blue cheese popover. Ocean Prime balances the steakhouse concept at the new 63 Las Vegas complex, presenting a seafood and sushi menu. With glorious views from its rooftop perch, you can sip a gin beverage from the roaming gin cart at brunch, lunch, and dinner. Highly anticipated, New York’s famous Peter Luger is opening in Caesars’s Palace, accepting reservations and OMG (!) credit cards. The restaurant represents Peter Luger’s first foray outside of Brooklyn and takes over the space formerly occupied by New York’s Rao’s. Even if you think you know the restaurant, this one will offer something you can’t find on the NYC menu: a chilled seafood tower. Also at Caesar’s, New York’s Stanton Social morphs into Stanton Social Prime, a steakhouse with an art deco flair. For something vegetarian, Eyal Shani brings his Modern Israeli finesse to the Venetian in The Palazzo Tower with HaSalon, a highspirited interactive gourmet dining experience, and Miznon for fast-casual Mediterranean favorites like whole-roasted cauliflower, stuffed pitas with hummus and falafel, plus a ribeye steak and lamb kebabs for the carnivores.

52 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2023

If you still can’t decide where to go and want to hedge your bets, you can opt for a sampler from the best. Lip Smacking Foodie Tours meets at the Venetian, where you’ll do a “Culinary Afternoon Adventures” stroll to the likes of Estiatorio Milos, Cipriani, Sugarcane and Chica, ending at the Wynn Plaza Shops. Food, drink and Las Vegas history are included. Food halls continue to be a big deal in Las Vegas. With a mashup of one-off restaurants and unusual imports from the US and abroad, these hotel-based options are a contemporary version of Vegas’s standard buffet (although buffets are still available if that’s your preference). ARIA Resort & Casino takes you on an only-in-Vegas tour of 12 global food options at Proper Eats. I’m particularly fond of the temaki rolls at Temaki Bar, the fried chicken sandwiches from London’s Seoul Bird, and the spiced cauliflower bowl from Portland’s Shalom Y’all. An urban version of a food court, Famous Foods Street Eats at Resorts World Las Vegas takes its inspiration from street foods in Southeast Asia and focuses on pan-Asian quick eats. If you still want the buffet experience, The Buffet at Wynn has updated its menu. It has a gorgeously redone atrium space to enjoy over 90 delicious breakfast, brunch, and dinner dishes. Bourbon St. Parade is a new, high-energy bar experience about freespirited New Orleans. Located at the Grand Bazaar Shops in front of Horseshoe Las Vegas, the bar is the go-to for cocktails with NOLA flair and live music to encourage you to create your second-line parade. LODGING NEWS Las Vegas ups the ante in lodging choices with a prominent renovation, three new properties, and a wellness program. MGM Resorts International’s Bellagio Resort & Casino’s Spa Tower is getting a shiny $110 million makeover, renovating all rooms and suites with elegant white marble in bathrooms, cushy sleeping spaces, and high-tech lights. The resort’s Italian vibe has been refreshed with cream-colored headboards and accents, offsetting the Strip’s colors. This follows the renovation of the hotel’s 2500 rooms and suites in its main tower. An exciting opening for Las Vegas, the 67-story Fontainebleau Las Vegas adds 3644 luxury rooms, a casino, and a collection of restaurants to the Strip by year-end. Expect Fontainebleau-style elegance à la Fontainebleau Miami Beach, done vertically. Repeat visitors may want to check out the newest area for development in the city. Ten miles from the Strip, Southwest Las Vegas is seeing a boom in residences and dining. A new property, Durango Resort and Casino adds 15 more restaurants, a 24/7 casino, and 200 guestrooms and suites. The food hall trend continues here, too, with the playfully named Eat Your Heart Out. Guests wishing to detox after a night of Vegas fun will want to get up early for Yoga at The Spa at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas. On weekends, the hotel offers complimentary sessions to guests, mats provided. Nonguests can practice their asanas for $20 per session. Reservations are required. MUSIC & SHOWS Residencies remain a staple in Las Vegas, with more stars opting for multi-week or even multi-month schedules in one venue rather than tours. This year’s offerings appeal to all kinds of music fans with the showiest happening at the newest kid on the landscape, the MSG Sphere at The Venetian. This dynamic space features a 4-D experience with wind and seats that vibrate for an immersive concert event that pushes the entertainment bar even higher. Tickets and hotel packages are available for the U2: UV opening residency experience. The new Resorts World Las Vegas complex has become an entertainment central, with superstars Luke Bryan and Carrie Underwood currently lighting up the stages at Resorts World Theatre and performances by Illusionist and stunt artist David Blane. For more country joy, singersongwriter Lainey Wilson offers a mini-residence at The Theater at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas. Other headliners to book now include Rod Stewart at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, Garth Brooks at The Colosseum, and Liz Phair at The Theater at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas. Plan for Las Vegas’s two notable music festivals, Lovers & Friends at the Las Vegas Festival Grounds in the spring and Life Is Beautiful in the fall. Australian pop star Kylie Minogue lands her first Vegas residency at the Venetian at the new Voltaire Belle de Nuit. Voltaire is said to “blur the lines between an intimate club, concert, and non-stop entertainment venue,” creating a club, pre-gaming, and concert experience. Broadway fans might recognize design elements here: the art-deco fantasy décor was created by Emmy- and Tony Award-winner Derek McLane, the production designer behind MJ, Moulin Rouge, and the Met Gala. Awakening has reopened at Wynn Las Vegas bringing a 360-degree theater experience with aerialists, acrobats, puppetry, comedy and dance in a re-imagined mythic story of a hero who confronts the forces of Darkness to bring Light back to the world.

MUSEUMS, COMEDY & MORE There’s much to fill your days and nights if you need a break from the lights and action of the poker tables and slot machines or have already enjoyed your share of Cirque du Soleil shows or Barry Manilow and Adele concerts. Take a look at the new Punk Rock Museum, for instance. The never-beforeseen exhibits celebrate 45 years of punk (now catching up to hip-hop). You can entertain yourself by getting a tattoo, shopping, listening to artists you might have forgotten, and perusing the vast collection of clothing, fliers, instruments, art, and music from Kurt Cobain, Devo, the B-52s, and many more. If the mood or need strikes, there’s a bar and a wedding/wake chapel. Remembering Princess Diana, a quarter of a century after her tragic death, Princess Diana: A Tribute Exhibition walks you through Diana’s earliest years to her time as a Royal. Dresses, handwritten notes, photos, and other personal ephemera are beautifully arranged in a series of rooms on the top floor of The Shops at Crystals. At the Area 15 entertainment complex, Meow Wolf ’s Omega Mart’s adultsonly evenings have gotten so popular that their “Night Shift” is now offered every Thursday night. You can enjoy cocktails as you wander the maze of crazy, immersive spaces and the psychedelic market. For laughs, with a dose of ribaldry, the new home of Brad Garrett’s Comedy Club is the place to be. The expanded, classy space is now in a more accessible location in The District at MGM Grand. If you sit at a front table, plan to be picked on in a somewhat lascivious conversation with Garrett, who introduces comedians on a rotating schedule. Grab a coat and a cocktail and chill at Minus5 ICEBAR at Mandalay Bay. Their new ice display attraction will cool you down with a life-size ocean wave and Nordic Viking ship. It’s the perfect antidote for those steamy Vegas days (and nights). For more information on Las Vegas, visit lvcva.com

Dear Mindie, I’m completely distraught. My son is getting married to a wonderful woman in less than a year. I am pleased about their upcoming wedding, but it’s also creating a lot of friction between me and my family. Even though I come from a relatively large family, my son and his fiancé chose a venue that only accommodates 150 people. Therefore, many will not be invited, and the situation is causing a lot of upset. We decided only to invite immediate family members and cousins, many of whom are my generation. Because of this decision, cousins of my son’s and my mother’s generations are not included. The cousins are causing a lot of turmoil. And my mother’s behavior has caused such stress and aggravation. She has upset my son, his fiancé, future in-laws, and ongoing duress for me. My son has shared he will not come to Thanksgiving if she is going to be present because of the wedding arguments. I don’t know what to do. My mother has always been demanding and poorly-liked, but this is my last straw! I will not permit her to upset my son and ruin our family ties with him and his future wife and her parents. To that end, I still care about my mother; without me, she has nothing. I support her emotionally and financially and feel obligated to ensure she is safe and cared for. Please help me! Sincerely, Wedding Bells Dear Wedding Bells, Wedding planning can bring out the best and worst in people as emotions are strong and stress levels abnormally high. All sorts of conflict ensue, from the color of the linens to the level of family friction you are discussing. It sounds like your mother is the brunt of your problems, however. From what you described, there are other obstacles, like your cousins, but “This too shall pass.” Not everyone will understand your son and finance’s choice to have a smaller wedding. That is okay. They do not need their permission or approval. You need to adhere to the authentic narrative that the venue only holds a certain number of people. Therefore, you were forced only to invite certain generations of family members. There is nothing more to say or do on that front. They may not understand the circumstances but must accept them and move on from this issue.

Your mother, on the other hand, is creating a more significant issue. From what you are sharing, it seems as though she does not respect your boundaries or your son’s. As a result, you must exercise your muscles to maintain them. First, I would try to express your upset calmly and collectedly, even if she is not responding with the same even-keeled tone. Rather than pointing fingers in her direction, I would explain (just as you will with your cousins) the venue’s limitations concerning capacity and that this is your son’s wedding, not yours or hers. She needs to respect the couple’s wishes, support them, and be a loving guest at their celebration. If she is unwilling to abide, then you can tell her to stay home, as well as remove her from events (like Thanksgiving) until she is respectful and not causing an uproar. I know that the last part seems harsh, but just like children need to have consequences to achieve a desired behavior modification, adults do, too. I don’t think cutting her off financially or turning your back on her entirely is a fair or realistic option, so removing her from family events until her behavior is acceptable is your best bet. Either way, she needs consequences. Her demeanor and actions are inappropriate, and unfortunately, you will be blamed for her stance if you do not step in and try to smooth things over. By punishing her, you will send her a strong message, I assure you. Best of luck, and I hope things start becoming more exciting than stressful sooner rather than later. And if they don’t—remember, “This too shall pass!” Love, Mindie xo

By AP Connolly

visit to Dr. Sharon Giese’s townhouse on the Upper East Side is a transforming experience for her patients. The renowned plastic surgeon is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and specializes in various plastic surgery procedures to help you achieve your health and aesthetic goals. “Cosmetic surgery is a way of respecting yourself and your body. Dr. Giese combines her art, science, medicine, and psychology background to deliver customized treatments to each patient. “Selecting a surgeon is very important and sometimes daunting,” she says. Dr. Giese and her staff are involved with every step of the process. Her patients all want the same—to be better versions of themselves, from celebrities to soccer moms. Dr. Giese’s experience will help guide you through the sea of misinformation and bring you the latest treatments. She’s a noted medical expert who’s refined many innovative techniques to provide both men and women with beautiful, natural-looking results. Dr. Giese is determined to provide the best possible care and outcome for each client so that everyone is guaranteed their red-carpet look. Whether you want to lift sagging skin, enhance curves, smooth wrinkles, or improve symmetry, Dr. Giese can help transform your body and life. Her in-demand treatments include Body Sculpting and Elective Weight Loss™—A NO DIET DIET.

BODY SCULPTING

When achieving the ideal body, you have always wanted, more than diet and exercise may be required. There can be stubborn areas that are difficult to target and tone, which can be frustrating. Dr. Giese offers various body sculpting treatment methods to help you best achieve your aesthetic goals. She provides many options, from non-invasive Ultraslim™ and EMSCULPT® to minimallyinvasive liposuction and removing the excess arm, thigh, or abdominal skin, as necessary.

ELECTIVE WEIGHT LOSS™ - A NO DIET DIET

Excess weight increases the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers. Just 10 - 15 pounds over your adult low weight can have negative medical, negative psychological and of course, wardrobe consequences. Staying on a restricted calorie diet for a sustained period is challenging and typically takes longer than one thinks or desires. Everyone wants a quick fix, but slow and steady is the path to success here. This is where Semaglutide comes in. It cuts the appetite, resulting in less food intake and weight loss. People can expect ½ to 2 pounds a week loss. How Does It Work? Semaglutide is the active ingredient of the FDA-approved medication (Ozempic® and Wegovy®) for weight loss in people with obesity and overweight individuals with type 2 diabetes. It will decrease your appetite by slowing stomach emptying. You will achieve satiety quicker, resulting in eating and drinking less. This fullness will last longer, reducing the desire to eat again or consume more. Dr. Giese’s professional team will adjust dosage based on your appetite suppression while minimizing discomfort. 62 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2023

Who’s A Good Candidate For ELW-- ELECTIVE WEIGHT LOSS™ Anyone who has seen their weight drift up (even as little as 8 pounds), who is having difficulty getting weight off and keeping it off.

· People with a BMI of 20 - 30, normal to medically overweight people who are “overweight” relative to themselves.

· Otherwise, healthy people with excess weight being their main medical problem.

Why A NO DIET DIET I am intentionally not recommending “a diet.” A “NO-DIET DIET” has been found to be equally if not more effective than any specific restrictive diet plan. Everyone’s lifestyle and relationship with food is different and changes over time. You are all adults. I am not going to tell you what to eat and be the food police.

chain issues, possible food source scarcity and inflation, there are many reasons to incorporate a lifestyle less dependent on large amounts of food for satisfaction. “My first weight reduction program was called Fast Track to Better Health which incorporates large volume liposuction into a successful weight loss program. This program still holds today but now I can offer a non-surgical, natural tool to suppress one’s appetite and help anyone achieve their weight loss goal.” EMSCULPT® It is a unique body sculpting treatment that stimulates muscle contractions to build muscle and tone. During this revolutionary treatment, muscles are forced to contract, burning fat and helping create a more defined, toned shape. While EMSCULPT® is used to treat the abdominal areas, it can also be used for a nonsurgical, non-invasive butt lift. ULTRASLIM™ A non-surgical alternative to traditional liposuction that can help remove stubborn areas of fat. The only FDA-approved device for immediate size reduction. It is not uncommon to lose four inches in your first 32-minute session. This treatment method does not necessarily destroy fat cells. Instead, fat cells are preserved, and their contents—fatty acids and triglycerides—are drained through red light therapy. LIPOSUCTION A popular surgical treatment for targeted fat removal. Dr. Giese uses ultrasoundassisted liposuction, an advanced treatment technique that removes stubborn fat and helps tighten skin. Not only can this help remove pesky pockets of fat, but collagen production is promoted for a smoother, firmer appearance. Lose more inches per pound than any other method of weight loss. BREAST ENHANCEMENTS Natural breast augmentation, as opposed to breast enhancement using implants, allows for an improved breast shape and size using your own fat which is removed from a donor location using a minimally invasive liposuction technique. Unlike traditional liposuction. Donor locations are chosen depending on individual needs and may include areas such as the abdomen, love handles, thighs or back. Another option is The Power Breast Lift, known as a mastopexy. Used to correct sagging breasts, this procedure raises and reshapes. Dr. Giese performs a special “internal bra” technique during this procedure, re-arranging the breast tissue under the skin to self-support the breasts, thereby requiring little to no brassiere support following surgery. Dr. Giese’s motto: “Promote health and wellness, enhance body image and strengthen the psyche to improve overall quality of life.” She understands that confidence is vital, and our cosmetic procedures allow you to dramatically improve the aesthetics of your body, enhancing both your physical and emotional well-being.

DELMONICO’S

A REBIRTH OF CULINARY EXCELLENCE

A

By Jenna Guarneri

fter a prolonged hiatus, the legendary Delmonico’s restaurant has rekindled its legacy and officially reopened its doors for dining. Located at 56 Beaver Street in the heart of the Financial District, Delmonico’s emerges from its hibernation with a rejuvenated ambiance, a fresh executive chef, and new ownership while paying homage to its illustrious 186-year history. The restaurant is esteemed in American culinary history as the nation’s first fine dining establishment. The pioneer introduced the term “restaurant” to the American lexicon, forever changing the way people dined. Before Delmonico’s, eating out was often an informal and unstructured experience. However, this iconic establishment elevated dining into an art form, setting the stage for the refined dining culture we cherish today.

Another groundbreaking achievement that Delmonico’s can proudly claim is being the first restaurant to publish a cookbook. This historic culinary tome not only preserved the restaurant’s cherished recipes but also inspired chefs and food enthusiasts for generations to come. Furthermore, Delmonico’s challenged societal norms by becoming the first restaurant to serve women at their tables without the accompaniment of men. This progressive approach was groundbreaking in the 19th century and symbolized the restaurant’s commitment to inclusivity and innovation. A STORIED LEGACY As Delmonico’s prepares to reopen its doors, it’s worth noting that this venerable institution boasts a history that predates many of New York City’s most iconic landmarks. Delmonico’s is older than the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Flatiron Building, and the Grand Central Terminal. It has been a steadfast witness to the ever-evolving landscape of the city it calls home. One of the most significant changes at Delmonico’s is the appointment of Chef Edward J. Hong as its Executive Chef. Chef Hong boasts a rich culinary background that includes stints in some of New York City’s most renowned Michelin-starred kitchens, bringing a refreshing and innovative touch to the restaurant’s menu. Diners can now tantalize their taste buds with delightful creations like the Myung Ran Caesar Salad, featuring Little Gem lettuce, Parmesan, White Anchovies, Chives, and Creamy Myung Dressing. Another standout dish is the Sea Urchin & Abalone Risotto, made with Koshihikari Rice, Abalone Liver Sauce, Nori, Crispy Shitake, and Shaved Frozen Oysters.

OLD FAVORITES To honor the restaurant’s rich culinary history, Chef Hong will also highlight revamped versions of American classics that have made Delmonico’s legendary. Expect to savor Baked Alaska, Lobster Newberg, Chicken à la Keene, and the iconic Delmonico Steak, featuring an 18-oz Brandt Beef cut. If that’s not enough to whet your appetite, the menu boasts a 14-oz Prime Dry-Aged Bone-In Ribeye, crowned with Uni Butter. “Delmonico’s has always been in the unique position of serving guests from around the world,” shared Chef Hong. “The restaurant is known for its high culinary standards and signature dishes, and I’m excited to enrich Delmonico’s dining experience by introducing the option of new global flavors and techniques while also celebrating its classic dishes.” A LEGACY PRESERVED Max Tucci, a culinary professional, television personality, and best-selling author has joined the 3rd Generation Partner and Global Brand Officer team. Max brings a unique connection to Delmonico’s—his grandfather was one of the owners who reopened Delmonico’s after Prohibition in the 1920s. With his family’s deep-rooted history with the restaurant, Max Tucci is set to oversee and support the restaurant’s guest experience, ensuring that Delmonico’s continues to thrive as a culinary institution. In his cookbook, The Delmonico Way: Sublime Entertaining and Legendary Recipes from the Restaurant that Made New York! Max Tucci provides an insider’s perspective on the restaurant’s rich history and culinary traditions. Now, he’ll play a pivotal role in carrying forward the Delmonico’s legacy.

“Delmonico’s culinary, events, and guest experience teams are composed of impressive talent who are all looking forward to this next chapter in Delmonico’s storied history,” shared Dennis Turcinovic, owner and operator of Delmonico’s Restaurant Group. A BRIGHT FUTURE BECKONS Turcinovic and his partner Joseph Licul, both seasoned restaurateurs, have reaffirmed their commitment to Delmonico’s by signing a 15-year lease for the historic building. Turcinovic, who has been associated with the renowned establishment since 1999, brings over 25 years of experience in the hospitality industry to the table. His dedication to preserving Delmonico’s legacy is unwavering.

As the sun sets on the pandemic era, Delmonico’s stands ready to usher in a new generation of culinary excellence, tradition, and innovation. With a fresh look, a talented Executive Chef, and a commitment to honoring its past, Delmonico’s promises to continue its reign as a cornerstone of fine dining in the heart of New York City.

ELEVATED MEXICAN FARE WITH A VIEW

RESERVE A TABLE AT BROOKLYN’S ELNICO RESTAURANT By Anne Raso

E

very table in ElNico at the The Penny Hotel in Williamsburg has a view unlike any other in the tristate area. That’s because it’s a new hotel with 360 degrees of floor to ceiling windows. Located on the 11th floor of The Penny Hotel, you not only see the classic NYC skyline, but you get a stunning view of downtown Brooklyn as well.

To be perfectly honest other influences are in the culinary mix besides Mexican: you will notice that there are several Mediterranean classics on the ElNico menu. Executive Chef Fernanda Serrano, who came over from the Nomad London Hotel to run the ElNico’s kitchen explains, “Both Mexican and Mediterranean cuisines share the passion for tradition and harmony of flavors. I always get excited in learning traditional cooking techniques from various places, but also looking at similarities between dishes.” THINK PINK She continues with a smile, “Most of the influences come from my travels. One would be the Pink Mole. While on vacation with my mom in Greece, we asked for a beet and orange salad with a spicy sauce that reminded me of a mole. This idea stuck in my mind and while creating this dish I wanted to create a pink vegan mole where instead of a protein, beet was the main star of the dish.” Needless to say, ElNico has plenty of dishes that cater to vegans and vegetarians. There are at least six fish dishes each night as well. 66 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2023

The young Chef Serrano has more than paid her dues at some of the most stellar eateries in Europe and the U.S. “I’ve had the opportunity to work at some of the best restaurants in the world including Osteria Francescana, El Celler de Can Roca, Schloss Schauenstein, and Pujol. I witnessed and experienced each culture created and inspired me to create a dish not only comes from an ingredient, but also from art, music and architecture.” PASS THE PIBIL We asked Chef Serrano about the restaurant’s most popular dishes as well as her favorites and she responded, “The popular dishes would be the Pink Mole, the Carnitas Taco and the Pulpo Pibil. My favorite is the Pulpo Pibil by far—this dish brings nostalgia to me! It is inspired by my mom’s Cochinita Pibil that I enjoyed as a child but instead of pork, I feature octopus, my mom’s favorite protein.” WINTER WINNERS & SURPRISES We had to ask affable Chef Serrano what will be added to the ElNico menu for the winter months, and she remarked, “My friends know that I love chanterelles and eggplant, so be ready to see those two ingredients included in the menu. One of my favorite Mexican antojitos during winter are tamales and churros! It will be a cozy menu.” The ElNico menu is set up into four sections: apps, tacos and taquitos, small plates and large plates. The Carnitas Tacos are amazingly simple; you get a large five or six oz. neatly cut slab of pork on a fresh soft corn taco with Morita Chile and pearl onion (there are two per order and are only slightly spicy). The restaurant is possibly the only NYC place serving short rib not braised in a brown wine sauce. It’s magnificent. The full name of this large plate is Short Rib al Pastor, and the meaty rib is brushed with pineapple- chili sauce. We also shared the Carne Asada which is tender flank steak served with spring onion, garlic and Salsa Borracha. The super bonus is that you get a giant cow bone full of marrow topped with garden fresh herbs sitting next to a generous pike of roasted shishitos. © Alice Gao

Executive Chef Fernada Serrano

For dessert there are three choices per night. Try the Carajillo Sando, a gourmet ice cream sandwich with outer shells made with dark Mexican chocolate. The uniquely textured homemade chocolate ice cream filling has a bouncy texture somewhere between mousse and mochi and is made with both chocolate and Licor 43! The Fresas Con Crema is also a winner and it’s a creamy concoction of strawberry, pink peppercorn and Mascarpone. A UNIQUE CROWD Being situated in Williamsburg, ElNico gets a cutting-edge fashionista crowd with every table taken by 7 pm. “We have a mixed clientele, most being neighborhood locals. I would say the view is something that separates us from other Mexican restaurants in the area. Each place represents Mexican food in their own way, so I’m happy that locals have more options to experience food in different varieties. People can come to ElNico and be sure they will have creative and amazing food and cocktails, and one thing I’m proud to say is that you will be received by a happy team excited to have you,” she said. We add that the service is friendly, and the staff is knowledgeable about wines and cocktails. Because of the gorgeous view, guests want to linger, and they can rest assured that no one will rush them out! The mixologists behind the bar are happy to introduce you to new cocktails and will tailor them to your special requests. You’ll even be able to try a Strawberry Tomato Margarita made with Patron Silver Tequila, Aperol, tomatoes, strawberry and basil! All photos courtesy of ElNico Restaurant. GREAT BITES HOLIDAY STUFFING MADE EASY By Sean-Patrick M. Hillman

It’s that time of year when friends and family descend on our homes for Holiday celebrations. It’s also that time of year when the argument of which stuffing is better, chestnut versus cornbread. Chestnut Stuffing provides a more profound, warmer, and more seasonal flavor to stuffing than cornbread. It has always been my experience that having actual cornbread on hand to serve with dinner is a far better way to include that flavor profile in your meal. Secondly, stuff the bird. Your stuffing will be safe if you check temperatures correctly throughout the turkey cooking process. I have put my Mother’s chestnut stuffing recipe here for your use this Thanksgiving (with appropriate warnings to remain safe). I hope you enjoy it! Ingredients • One loaf of white bread with crust (left out overnight with packaging opened) • One stick of salted butter • 1.5 diced sweet onion • 1 cup diced celery • ½ cup of fresh chopped parsley • 12 ounces of whole roasted (or steamed) chestnuts (out of the shell). Preferred is Williams Sonoma Steamed Whole Chestnuts. • Dry Sherry or Port • Ground sage • Salt • Pepper Preparation Open bread the night before, letting it get stale (don’t cut crusts) Break the bread into small and medium pieces the next day and place in a bowl. Heat the butter, onions, and celery until translucent. Pour over bread. Sprinkle in parsley and sage to taste. Break up chestnuts and stir in. Pour sherry or port over so the bread mixture is moist (not mushy). Stuff the turkey right before you cook to ensure maximum safety from bacteria inside the bird. You will have stuffing left, so put the remaining inside foil and cook with the turkey for about an hour before total turkey cooking time is done. Serve and Enjoy! The Renaissance of The Brindle Room I recently ran into Jeremy Spector, Chef and Co-Owner of The Brindle Room in the East Village. I knew I had to revisit his outpost. The Brindle Room was one of the hottest spots in the East Village when it opened well over a decade ago. The restaurant remained extremely popular until the pandemic forced it to close temporarily. The restaurant re-opened last year in a new location and is well on its way to returning to its former glory, not that it ever really left! My wife Kylie and I stopped in for dinner a few weeks ago. Bear in mind my wife is a vegetarian, so eating out is often an adventure. Our culinary adventure began with my Tuna Tostada appetizer, while my wife grazed on the abundantly delicious Kale Salad. The tuna was incredibly fresh, and its flavor was perfectly complimented by the avocado cream and pico de gallo on a crunchy corn tortilla. We continued our delicious dalliance, with Kylie thoroughly enjoying the Orecchiette Broccoli Rabe & Sausage (minus the sausage). At the same time, I wolfed down one of the best burgers I have had in decades. Kylie was impressed with her pasta dish, while the Sebastian’s Steakhouse Burger was incredibly flavorful with a juicy, thick meat patty. Our journey ended with Spector’s Chocolate Mousse; it was well-balanced, smooth and perfect. Needless to say, we’ll be back. The Brindle Room is fabulous, and it is clearly due to Jeremy Spector’s masterful flare in the kitchen and his welcoming approach to the front of the house. WINTER BLOCKBUSTERS AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM

PG-13 Jason Momoa returns as Aquaman in this sequel to his 2018 debut as the underwater superhero. It’s a direct continuation of that flick, as his nemesis Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Manteen II) is back and ready to take their underwater battles to a new level. Most of the other key players in Atlantis and on land are back, too, including Patrick Wilson, Nicole Kidman, Dolph Lundgren, Randall Park, and Amber Heard. And somehow Batman (Ben Affleck) jumps into the watery mix this time, too!

THE HUNGER GAMES: THE BALLAD OF SONGBIRDS AND SNAKES

Not yet rated This fifth installment of The Hunger Games saga goes back into the past, exploring the life of Coriolanus Snow as a young man. Played by Tom Blyth, Snow at 18 becomes a mentor for the 10th Hunger Games, long before the 74th games, which brings Katniss Everdeen into his purview, and his rise to power in Panem begins. Rachel Zegler, Hunter Schafer, Peter Dinklage, Jason Schwartzman, and Viola Davis join this next cinematic version of the dystopian world created by novelist Suzanne Collins.

THE MARVELS

PG-13 Brie Larsen returns as Captain Marvel in this latest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, joined by Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani), astronaut Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) in an action-packed adventure that centers on (shockingly!) a threat to the actual universe. If that sounds like a Marvel plot you may have heard before, at least this one is full of women as the lead protagonists. It’s number 33 in the MCU series that began with Iron Man in 2008; more are on the way in 2024, too.

WISH

PG Disney’s newest animated musical fantasy follows Asha (Ariana DeBose), a teenager who lives in a magical kingdom where a benevolent monarch grants wishes. But when it turns out the king isn’t such a good man, Asha finds a way to change things for the better. From Frozen Oscar winners Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, this flick that also stars the vocal talents of Evan Peters, Chris Pine, Alan Tudyk, and Victor Garber looks to be one of 2023’s biggest hits among the younger set.

WONKA

PG With endless love for Willy Wonka, a proven thing among moviegoers, director-writer Paul King (of Paddington fame) decided it’s time to give us the candymaker’s back story. That’s what Wonka is all about, how he met the Oompa-Loompas and other friends on the way to becoming the greatest chocolate maker the (fantasy) world has ever known. An amazing cast, led by Timothee Chalamet and backed up by Olivia Colman, Hugh Grant, Keegan-Michael Key, Rowan Atkinson, and Sally Hawkins makes this one of the season’s hottest tickets. 72 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2023

HISTORICAL EPICS OF ALL SORTS ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE

Netflix This World War II drama is based on Anthony Doerr’s best-selling, Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. Starring Aria Mia Loberti in her acting debut as the blind French teen and Louis Hofmann as the German soldier whose lives intersect in the midst of the war, this miniseries follows a fascinating story of a famed diamond being hidden from the Nazis as they advance across France. Mark Ruffalo and Hugh Laurie also star in this much-anticipated series.

THE BUCCANEERS

Apple TV+ This literary adaptation of Edith Wharton’s last novel is a must-see for anyone who loves English period pieces set in the 19th century (like The Age of Innocence and The Gilded Age). The Buccaneers follows the exploits of five wealthy American teenage girls who sail off to London’s debutante season in search of husbands with titles and land. They get more than they bargained for in this peek into a world of gorgeous clothes and unscrupulous men.

FARAWAY DOWNS

Hulu Baz Luhrmann brings back his 2008 Australia film in this expanded look at the story of Lady Sarah (Nicole Kidman) and Drover (Hugh Jackman) set in the Outback as World War II begins. He’s taken the “two million feet of film” he shot back then and reworked it into a six-episode miniseries with a new ending, to revisit the themes of that Oscar-nominated film. Bryan Brown, Essie Davis, and Brandon Walters co-star.

LAWMEN: BASS REEVES Paramount+ Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan has teamed up with Ray Donovan producer Chad Feehan to create an Old West series based on the real Bass Reeves, a slave freed during the Civil War who later became one of the first Black U.S. marshals to police the Wild West. David Oyelowo takes the lead, with Dennis Quaid, Donald Sutherland, Barry Pepper, and Garrett Hedlund all strapping on their six guns to join in this throwback to the days when Westerns ruled the U.S. TV airwaves.

MONARCH: LEGACY OF MONSTERS

Apple TV+ Set in both the 1950s and current times, this new series is part of a very old “MonsterVerse”—that of Godzilla and the other monsters that have terrorized Japan and much of the world in this alternate universe. Kurt Russell stars in this fantastical tale of the secret organization called Monarch. Spanning three generations, this epic fantasy also stars Kurt’s son Wyatt Russell, who plays his character in sequences set back in the ‘50s.

ADOPTION & RESCUE THE ART OF GIFT GIVING

P

By Sean-Patrick M. Hillman, Editor-in-Chief, Pet Lifestyles Magazine

et gifts are one of my favorite topics. Why? Because often you can get extra creative, or personal, when gifting a pet. Whether it is a family pet, a friend’s pet or even the host of that fabulous holiday party you go to every December, pet gifting can be a lot of fun.

Let’s talk about gifting for a pet that is not your own. Getting a gift for that kind of furrever friend can be even more challenging than purchasing something for their human counterpart. You don’t necessarily know what personality type the pet is, nor what their likes and desires are outside of food. In this context, I always recommend asking their human counterpart before going down the rabbit hole of products available at Chewy.com or in your local pet store. The same logic, and advice, applies when it comes to bringing a gift for the furrever friend of the host of a party. Clearly there is a lot of stimulation happening at a party. Often that stimulation can end up creating problems for a dog, as well as a cat. When it comes to this situation, my first recommendation is always to purchase a tough chew toy for a dog or a catnip-inclusive toy for a cat to keep them distracted at the party. But, again, you really need to talk to the host or their significant other to get better context on the pet’s needs and wants. The aforementioned advice does not mean you can’t get creative. I simply caution that if you are going to get a gift for a pet, just like if you would for a child, you need to understand if there are allergies, likes, dislikes and more. When it comes to creativity, you can do things like bake a Pup Cake (or order one) or make a Tutu (or order one). For both examples, please see below. Obviously buying something for your own furrever friend is easy. You know what they like and don’t. You also know what their behavior is like, meaning are they a chewer, a hoarder or a pacifier? Let’s use Brioreo, the Spokesdog for Pet Lifestyles Magazine, as well as my wife Kylie’s and my little one. For the purposes of this example, let me shamelessly promote my skills as a chef, baker, and grill master. Yes, believe it or not, yours truly has been cooking, baking and barbecuing since I was five. For more context, I would point you to my Great Bites column in our sister magazine, New York Lifestyles Magazine. Last year, on Bri’s first “Gotcha Day” (the day she was adopted), we didn’t want to just give her another toy like we do every week. I personally wanted to make her something that we could photograph and have a nice memory of. So, I made her a Pup Cake. When making food or snacks for a pet, make sure you check the ingredients for major no-no’s like Xylitol or chocolate. As you can see in the photo of Bri with the Pup Cake, she is also wearing a Tutu that was made by Tutu Blossom (www.tutublossom.etsy.com). The Pup Cake is available at www.hillbites.com. Full disclosure: I own Hillbites. To make things easier for our readers, I am putting in the recipe for my Pup Cake so you can make them at home if you want. Otherwise, there is a discount offer below if you prefer to order them to be shipped to your home.

HILLBITES’ Pup Cake Ingredients 1 cup flour 1/2 tsp baking soda 1/8 cup vegetable oil 1/4 cup natural peanut butter. Do not use a peanut butter with Xylitol as it’s dangerous to dogs. Always check ingredients before using to make anything for an animal. 1/2 cup PLAIN applesauce, unsweetened 1/2 cup pumpkin puree (not pumpkin mix but actual pumpkin (often in a can) 1 egg 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt 1/4 cup peanut butter Preparation Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, combine flour and baking soda. In a separate bowl mix together vegetable oil, peanut butter, applesauce and pumpkin puree. Once combined, mix in egg and mix until combined. Combine wet and dry ingredients and stir until combined. Pour mixture into an 8-inch round pan (a square pan can also be used) that has been greased with oil. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean and the cake springs back when pressed lightly. Allow to cool on a wire rack prior to removing from pan. As cake is cooling, prepare frosting. Mix Greek yogurt and peanut butter until well combined. Spread over cake. If not serving immediately, store in refrigerator. Sure, turkey in moderation is fine for most pets, but remember your pet essentially eats the same diet for every meal every day and may have an adverse reaction to new treats. If you want your pet to partake in the festive meal, please restrict access to a limited amount of lean protein if they can tolerate that. Avoid any skin or bones that can cause GI obstruction or pancreatitis.

Yes, dogs love to chase crumpled wrapping paper. However, many of these papers (usually cheaper quality) contain chemicals that can harm your pet. You can still throw the crumpled-up ball of Christmas joy down the hall for your dog to chase, but make sure they do not ingest it.

·

If travel is in your plans, please ensure your pet is up to date on vaccines to facilitate intrastate or international travel. You may also need sedatives, so ask your vet well in advance.

Holly plants are lethal to dogs and children. Specifically, the berries on these beautiful, seasonal plants are toxic. If you want to have them decorate your home, please ensure they are out of reach of your dog, cat, or child. Signs of toxicity include vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy, but it is safest not to allow your pet access to these plants. Other toxic plants include Lilies and Poinsettia; Lily toxicity can be fatal to cats, and Poinsettia can cause mouth, stomach, and esophagus irritation, so again, please prevent access for your pets.

· Also, if your pet is on medication, make sure you have plenty for the duration

·

·

Not every pet welcomes new people in their home, so if your pet struggles with this, talk to your vet in advance to discuss how to manage this. Their recommendations may include medication to be given, so you need some time to obtain the medication and make sure it has the intended effect on your pet.

·

of the trip. Finally, if travel does not include your pet, ensure you have a trusted pet sitter or daycare facility lined up. This is a busy time, and availability can be limited! Next up on the schedule is Christmas and Hannukah. Between wrapping paper, tinsel on the trees, and Holly plants, a decorated home is beautiful, but it can also be lethal to a pet.

Tinsel is one of those decorations that have caused arguments across many families. Some love them for their simple shine and ability to accentuate a Christmas tree. Some hate them because they are messy, and when the family dog eats them, their poop is often lined with silver streaks. Tinsel is okay to use, like many things, in moderation. Just be mindful that if your dog does ingest tinsel, you must monitor the dog. If your dog has trouble passing tinsel, and you see some hanging out of their rectum as they poop, please do not pull the tinsel string out. You can damage your dog’s rectum and intestines. Usually, a dog can express these things with some effort (you will note that the dog may “rock back and forth” on its hind legs as it tries to ease the tinsel out). However, if your dog is distressed and this is the reason, then you need to contact your vet or an animal hospital ER. It is better to err on the side of caution here.

·

Remember that the same Thanksgiving rules apply here regarding treats, decadent foods, and more. The last thing anyone wants to do is have their furrever friend not feeling well during the holidays. It adds stress to an already stressful time and can also be heartbreaking to watch your pet being sick. Holiday time can be enriched by spending quality time with our pets, but please be mindful of these tips to make certain you’re enjoying family time and not spending that time at the animal hospital ER.

ENTREPRENEUR’S CORNER ANTHONY CIRONE, CHRIS TAYLOR & ANWAR KHODER By Patricia Canole

F

or 100 years, Li-Lac Chocolates has been keeping the tradition alive. A century ago, the founder of this world-famous company set foot on American soil and opened his chocolate shop in Greenwich Village. A long way from his native Greece, George Demetrious soon fell in love with New York City, and although there have been many changes to manufacturing these sweet treats, some things have never changed. During the years in his native Greece, Demetrious was inspired by an abundance of French-style patisseries near his home. He moved to Paris in1904, where he soon found an apprenticeship in the confectionery trade. Arriving during the Belle Époque period, he was surrounded by some of the most talented and creative minds of the time, shaping his thinking and kicking off his chocolate career. A NEW WORLD In 1914, Demitrious boarded a passenger ship. He arrived in Manhattan to begin immersing himself in the pulse and culture of New York City life, which was experiencing a chocolate boom at the time. Demetrious continued to learn and perfect his trade, opening his shop in 1923 Christopher Street in the heart of Greenwich Village. He implemented his knowledge in quality and innovation to create the cornerstone of what Li-Lac Chocolates is today. The brand has become a New York icon. It has survived The Great Depression, six wars, and many modern innovations but always remains true to its tradition. Maintaining the same single-minded focus on product quality, the confections are handmade daily using many original techniques and equipment. Each of the five generations of owners has been involved in production, taking the time to ensure Li-Lac prioritizes quality and preserving its history over efficiency and profit. CONFECTION PERFECTION Fast forward to 2023: owners Anthony Cirone, Chris Taylor, and Anwar Khoder have moved the company forward and expanded it to six locations: Hudson Yards, West Village Greenwich Avenue, Bleecker Street, Grand Central Market, Chelsea Market, and the Brooklyn Factory and store at Industry City. The team has broadened Li-Lac’s selection of confections to include specialty molds, including the Statue of Liberty and Empire State Building, now offering more than 120 items, making it one of the world’s largest selections of gourmet chocolates. Cirone is proud there is a solid fan base central to its success over the decades. The company has garnered generations of families—even people who have moved away. To the delight of these longtime fans, the Li-Lac team has worked to preserve Demetrious’ original recipes and techniques. Even the tools used to make confections are authentic, like the massive marble tables taken from the original Christopher Street location, or similar in style, like the large copper kettles used to cook the brand’s famous fudge. NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2023 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 79

Every confection in the brand’s portfolio of more than 120 items is handmade at its Industry City factory, lined with windows that allow guests to peek in at the process. You can watch a worker place individual pieces of glacé fruit onto the belt, or another skillfully funnel chocolate onto a tray lined with rainbow sprinkles to make nonpareils. Li-Lac designed the Industry City factory as a “showpiece” to highlight the fresh, small-batch nature of everything they do. FUDGE, MARZIPAN AND LOTS MORE Cirone describes the handcrafted nature of Li-Lac’s confections as a “labor of love.” LiLac staples, including its marzipan acorns, are made fresh daily using Demetrious’s original recipe and hand-dipped in dark chocolate. Master chocolatier Anwar Khoder is usually seen near the large copper kettles used to make the brand’s legendary fudge, which is slowly cooked over two hours. At the back of the factory, watch workers fill molds in various shapes—from the Empire State Building to a life-size football to a chocolate turkey that measures 10 inches tall—making sure to evenly distribute the mixture to ensure every crevice is filled with chocolate. Li-Lac draws its most significant business in the Candy Case, where curating your custom chocolate box is possible. It’s an old-school tradition that this enduring brand is best known for, and Li-Lac has benefitted from keeping things classic rather than jumping on trends. Cirone and his partners regularly review its selection of what’s selling best—and continue to be famous.

CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION To make 100 years special, Li-Lac Chocolates has released a hardcover book, Timeless Traditions: A Centennial History of Li-Lac Chocolates, along with an old-school classic gourmet limited edition of the 1923 Vintage Collection Chocolate Gift Box (featuring four original recipes created by the founder, George Demetrious. Both are available in-store or online.

One thing is for sure: old-school chocolate always stays in style. And for Anthony Cirone, Chris Taylor, and Anwar Khoder, that means keeping traditions alive this Holiday season— and beyond. For more information on Li-Lac Chocolates, visit lilacchocolates.com

MY NEW YORK STORY ASHLEY LONGSHORE: HER HAVEN OF JOY

A

By Jenna Guarneri | Photos by Brynne Winkelman

shley Longshore, the self-taught artist often dubbed a young, feminist Andy Warhol, has achieved tremendous success by challenging the traditional norms of the art world. With her vibrant and irreverent pop art, she has created a brand that defies convention and invites everyone to embrace the joy of art. Her recent venture, opening a massive showroom in New York City’s SoHo district at 43 Crosby Street, marks a significant milestone in her career. I recently sat down to talk with the highly talented artist who passionately shared her vision for this space, her journey to success, and her commitment to empowering aspiring artists. A DREAM REALIZED Longshore’s new “home” is more than just a showroom; it’s a creative hub, a sanctuary of art, whimsy, and madness, and a place for Ashley to celebrate the creatives she loves. It’s a stage for scholarship recipients to shine, a place for like-minded bohemians to gather, and a testament to the enduring artistic aspiration. “I have done it the old-fashioned way: with blood, sweat, tears, and work, and that is an art in itself,” explains Longshore. “I want this space to be a beacon of color and pop but mostly a reminder for artists never to give up. A reminder that you will only fail if you quit. A reminder that the American Art Dream is alive and well in New York City and ready to be experienced and celebrated!” A commitment to authenticity and positivity marks her journey to becoming a pop art icon. As an artist, Longshore’s vibrant personality shines through her bold, defiant, and cheeky art. She has found a way to carve out a unique path by blending art and entrepreneurship. Collaborations with global brands like Porsche, Gucci, and Maybelline demonstrate her ability to infuse vibrancy and unexpectedness into established names. Some of her most recognizable pieces include larger-than-life portraits of fashion icons like Kate Moss, Anna Wintour, and Audrey Hepburn and her Trophy and Labeled series, which explore themes of money, power, and irreverent messaging.

NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2023 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 81

BREAKING BOUNDARIES In addition, the artist is also an author. Her second book, Roar! A Collection of Mighty Women, published in 2021, features inspirational portraits of culturally seminal women and has received critical acclaim. A trailblazer in the art world, breaking boundaries and shattering norms is nothing new for Longshore who made history in 2018 when she became the first female artist to have a solo exhibit at Bergdorf Goodman in its over 100-year history. Along with the work she creates, she’s designed the retailer’s Palette at BG Café and served as IMG’s Artist-inResidence for New York Fashion Week where her artwork has graced the fashion runways and inspired collections alike. “I have to be real, and I have to be vulnerable,” says Longshore. I must be authentic, and New York is my ultimate opportunity to do that on another level.” In her book, entitled You Don’t Look Fat, You Look Crazy: An Unapologetic Guide to Being Ambitchous, she explains to readers that the name of the game is branding; it’s about value. She said, “I’m trying to turn myself into a Birkin bag.”

THE POWER OF INDEPENDENCE Longshore’s journey began in Montgomery, Alabama, as a self-taught artist. Her work is strongly influenced by her experience of having grown up in the South. “I always knew that I was different,” says Longshore. “I did not want to be a little Southern trophy wife.” Those early experiences, which included working various jobs and selling her art on scrap wood, helped establish a strong work ethic and tough resilience. For Longshore, self-belief, inner monologue, and patience in one’s journey are all contributors to finding success. Her biggest fans are her family and Longshore credits her father for instilling in her the importance of independence. “After college, he said, you want to be an artist, you need to figure out how to be an artist. I’ll never let anything happen to you, but you’ve got to learn how to stand on your own two feet no matter who you marry or don’t marry,” recounts Longshore. “And that was the greatest gift he’s ever given me.” With the recent opening of her NYC showroom, Longshore seeks to foster a deeper connection with collectors and admirers. From the brightly colored space to the warm faces inside, including Longshore’s, her vision has become a reality. Every inch of the space is designed with intention and a sense of joy. The atmosphere allows her to warmly ‘open the door and say, y’all come on in.’ Doing so will enable Longshore to bring that southern hospitality and warmth to people experiencing art. THE CITY’S CREATIVE ENERGY The decision to establish her showroom in New York City was driven by her love for the city’s creative energy. “New York is the greatest city in the world,” says Longshore. “This is the dream!” In a world that often feels overwhelming and divisive, Longshore believes in the power of joy and positivity. She encourages people to let go of comparisons, celebrate their uniqueness, and find happiness in life’s small, simple moments. As Longshore continues to leave her mark on the art world, let this serve as a reminder that art is a celebration of the human spirit, a source of endless possibility, and a beacon of joy in a challenging world. TIME OUT WITH… ROBERT BANNON

R

By Patricia Canole

obert Bannon is Jersey all the way. He grew up in Ridgefield Park and remembers those days with “Rewind,” recorded live at Greenroom 42 in New York City. “Rewind” is a live album about growing up in the 80s in Bergen County, NJ, with the music and stories that have shaped him. The album, produced by Director Robbie Rozelle, Music Director Yashuiko Fukuoka, and Robert, has classics that are known but never performed with the backstory “Rewind” provides. Musical theater classics like What You Own from Rent are done as a solo piece instead of the classic duet. The song is coupled with Robert’s story about auditioning for Rent on Broadway and how that changed his life. You hear his tales of a first date to I Wanna Dance With Somebody, and his love of Liza in World Goes Round. The ultimate tribute is to his role model, Barry Manilow, with a Mega Manilow Medley that lets the inner Fanilow out! Bannon smiled and told us, “I was 12 years old and got a karaoke machine for my birthday. It was destiny that the sample cassette tape had Mandy on it. I heard the first few bars and was hooked.”

© Michael Hull

FUN & NOSTALGIA While the music, fun, and nostalgia are a huge part of the album and stage show, Bannon made heart and connection the album’s focal point. From reminiscing about the music his parents loved to thinking back about watching The Muppets, the heartbeat is love and acceptance. “In a time where so many are judged, feel anxious, and long for connection, I intended to show that we all have more in common than apart. Even if you are from Minnesota in the 1930s, I promise you will relate,” says Bannon The music includes Dolly Parton, Harry Chapin, Peter Allen, and Robert’s classic Pride anthem, I Think He Knew, written by Matt Gould and Griffin Matthews. It expresses the sides of Robert that many have come to know: a 5th grade schoolteacher, queer advocate, talk show host, and actor. He has become a staple on red carpets around NYC speaking to the stars at premieres of Broadway shows, galas, and film festivals, but this is the most intimate portrayal of his life yet. He says the courage to tell his story comes from the team around him. Rozelle, who directed the piece and Fukuoka, who plays piano and arranged this concert/album, have been vital. “They are why I get to have fun, get lost, and tell this story. I come to them with wild ideas and always ready for the challenge,” says Bannon. “I hope that someone is listening to this album and realizes that the best is yet to come for them, and that life’s twists and turns usually lead you where you need to be.” © David Noles

HITTING A MILESTONE When Bannon is not singing or performing, he hosts The Roundtable virtual talk show which The Broadway Podcast Network recently picked up. Speaking to artists about their lives and journeys, how they turned lemons into lemonade, allowed Bannon to think about his life and times. “I turned 40 on Halloween. I am not a birthday person, but this one is funny. It seems like a milestone, a chance for reflection. I still have so much to do and am so grateful for the ride.” One thing is sure: Robert is ready to press fast forward and on to whatever is next. THE FINAL WORD THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF YEAR

T

By Sean-Patrick M. Hillman

he most wonderful time of year is upon us as the “Holiday Season” has arrived. Why do I put this in quotes? Because there is no such thing on the calendar as “holiday.” It is Christmas. It is Hannukah. It is Kwanza. It is Festivus. It is also whatever ridiculous, politically correct “holiday” the so-called progressive folk can come up with. When someone says Happy Hannukah to me (a Roman Catholic), I say thank you and “Merry Christmas.” That person is greeting me in their respective holiday season parlance. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Hence my reply in my own religion’s parlance as I try to be respectful and inclusive. Isn’t that what the Melting Pot is supposed to be? Yet, there are a lot of people, every year, who get “offended” when you wish them a “Merry Christmas.” Here’s a thought for those folks—find somewhere else to live, like back under the rock you crawled out from. We need to get back to basics and remind folks that the reason why it is called Christmas is because of the birth of Jesus Christ, as celebrated across every Christian religion. Now, if you believe in Kwanza, or even Festivus, then obviously Christ has nothing to do with that. To those celebrants, I still say, “Merry Christmas” and I hope they say to me “Happy Kwanza” or “Festivus for the rest of us” (shameless Seinfeld inclusion here). Isn’t it time for peace amongst all men and women…or at the very least, reserve outrage or being offended for something that actually matters? CONGESTION PRICING IS GOING TO DESTROY US Remember when then Governor David Patterson instituted a new payroll tax as well as a taxi surcharge in NYC to bail the MTA out back in 2009? Well, what was supposed to only last a few years has been in effect for 14 years. And in 2024, Governor Kathy Hochul will launch a state killer for the very same purpose. Yes, I am referring to congestion pricing. What started as a proposed way to mitigate congestion in Manhattan has very quickly turned into a political hot potato; and it’s a stinky, rotted and corrupt potato at that. Let’s look back at when Mike Bloomberg, our worst election mistake next to Bill DeBlasio, was in office. He created a “pilot program” for bike lanes and swore if it created more traffic, he would not move forward with rolling them out. Rather than be honest, the Napoleon wannabe took the GPS data from the cabs (knowing they avoided the test area during the assessment period) and claimed victory for bicycle riders. At the same time, he granted Uber and Lyft access to our streets (which he wouldn’t do before this “pilot”). Then 80,000 new vehicles ended up on the roads, clogging the streets as they roam around looking for a fare. Fast forward to Mayor deLousyo’s tenure when he lowered the speed limit for his failed “Vision Zero” initiative (which literally has zero vision). Now add in restaurant sheds, trash containers and more onto the streets. It is the perfect recipe for disaster.

Bear in mind, the state lost over 500,000 residents fleeing the Empire State for other jurisdictions, resulting in a 39.6 percent drop in tax revenue from 2022 – 2023. Throw in inflation and endless “fees” to everything from taxis to restaurants to grocery stores and you have the most expensive city in the country. Once congestion pricing hits (at between $9 - $25 per trip into the zone), it has already been speculated that the state will lose roughly 200,000 more taxpayers. Why? Because New York, formerly referred to as the Empire State, has now become known as the Tax and Spend state. With every jurisdiction around the tri-state (New Jersey, Suffolk, Nassau, Fairfield, and Staten Island) mounting lawsuits to stop the congestion pricing from happening, one has to ask…does Governor Hochul think the lawsuits and population shift are just going to magically disappear? I have to wonder given her policies, talking out of both sides of her mouth, and her reckless spending pattern of our hard-earned money. Is she following in former DC Mayor Marion Barry’s footsteps of smoking crack? It’s the only reasonable explanation I can come up with. I STAND WITH ISRAEL Speaking of the Holiday Season, you are aware that Jesus Christ was in fact born a Jew, right? Let me table that for a second. So, as I write this, I am just horrified by the Hamas attacks in Israel. It is inhumane, disgusting, racist and a crime against humanity. As of the writing of this column, the UN has yet to denounce the attacks and President Joe Biden has barely come out against Hamas and their Iranian backers. How is this possible in 2023? What planet are these people on that they think any attack against the Jewish state of Israel is okay? Back to my opener, in one sense, if you believe that Jesus was a Jew (it is fact but there are always naysayers), then we are all Jewish, to a degree. Let’s start with that commonality. I stand with Israel. I wish we all did. We need peace in the Middle East. Enough is enough. And that is The Final Word for 2023
