A VISIT WITH DESIGNER ALA VON AUERSPERG

Ala, born Princess Annie-Laurie, never dreamed she’d be the founder of a fashion brand, let alone a prolific painter. However, over a decade ago, she stumbled into an exciting new chapter. In 2009 Ala stepped into the creative space. Simply seeking a new hobby, Ala reached for a paintbrush. It was a natural fit. Shortly after that, Ala worked with a design team to bring her paintings to fabric, thus birthing the iconic brand.

And now, years later, her thousands of devoted customers are extremely grateful she did. Her paintings, and AvA’s pieces, are inspired by nature, color, and travel. Ala von Auersperg’s love of fashion began before launching her namesake brand in 2017. The young Princess Annie-Laurie would visit Parisian couture houses with her mother, Sunny Crawford von Bülow. The sleek designs and bold colors were imprinted on Ala’s mind. She quickly absorbed her mother’s fantastic eye for luxury in fashion and home decor. As Ala paints, she uses that trained eye to pick out the textures and colors others may overlook. She’s painted the ocean, roses from her garden, the tropical mock coffee plant, butterflies, and more.

Ala remembers, “My mother was one of my greatest inspirations. She enjoyed the finer things in life but never took them for granted. I’ve incorporated that same way of living into my own life, always stopping to smell the roses or at least to paint them.”

DEFINING ALA’S STYLE

As paintings became fabrics and fabrics became collections, the designs were a weaving of Ala’s style, the vintage couture she was surrounded by as a child, and the tropics. Ala splits her time between the East Coast and Antigua, which very well could be the greatest love of her life. She’s been a part of the Antiguan community for over 20 years. Her home boasts an expansive garden and sits just a short distance from the beach. The island seems to have inspiration hidden behind every shoreline, palm tree, or bungalow.

LUXURIOUS LOOKS

So, it’s no surprise that the brand has a Tropics Collection displaying bright blue coral and the mock coffee plant in white and lavender. The Antigua inspiration doesn’t end there. The brand made a simple butterfly print come to life in a new way on a translucent mesh that’s not only a luxurious look but also perfectly breezy for warm climates.

After the launch of the first collection, the brand became known for its sheer kaftan. The piece can be worn as a beach coverup, a statement over their all-white basics, or with a casual pair of jeans to add visual interest. In addition, the brand expanded its mesh line, offering floor-length flowing looks like the Rachel Sheer Mesh Poncho and figure-framing blouse like the Diane Sheer Mesh Top. Also, a fan favorite is AvA’s distinct Signature Sets which allow a customer to handcraft their own set of three pieces. Each set component can be worn in several ways, multiplying closet or suitcases options. It was essential for Ala and her daughter-turnedbusiness partner Sunny to create versatile pieces. They wanted pieces that could be transformed into multiple looks depending on how you accessorize, belt, or pair them.

A LOOK AT BARBADOS

HIKING TRAILS AND HIDDEN BAYS

How could a getaway be anything but magical on the island of Barbados—where monkeys are green, and fish fly? It’s the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure with lazy hours on a palm-fringed beach balanced by time spent exploring and elegant dinners at pictureperfect restaurants combined with forays into the local culture.

Enjoy getting close and personal with multi-hued coral, tropical fish, and hawksbill turtles. Scuba diving, snorkeling, and catamaran sailing are for those who like to keep it on topside. This easternmost and most British of all the Caribbean Isles gained its independence as a constitutional monarchy in 1966, and only last year did the nation formally sever ties with Britain.

Bajans—as islanders call themselves— deliver their hospitality with a warmth and charm that can’t be beaten. For those that want to get active and discover the island, there are some essential activities one must do while visiting Barbados to ensure you get the “proper Bajan experience.”

RUM’S THE WORD

The Caribbean drink of choice is rum. And Mount Gay is the oldest rum distillery, has been making the libation in Barbados since 1703. Today, it is still produced with most of it exported. Take a tour of the Mount Gay north of Bridgetown, and to learn about the history and, of course, a taste as well.

CATAMARAN CRUISING

Enjoy cruising along the calm west coast with one of the many boats, all offering some of the best service and smiles at sea. Choose from a morning or afternoon sail where you can lounge and work on your tan while the team serves you cold Banks Beer or a rum punch and point out some lavish mansions, hotels, and restaurants. In addition, guests can enjoy a unique swimming experience with turtles when the boat anchors for lunch. This is a definite must-have for our “Becoming a Bajan” list.

OISTINS FISH FRY

This hot spot of food and fun is the perfect setting to indulge in Bajan Culture. Enjoy rubbing shoulders and partying with locals to the sweet strains of calypso music. Bajans dance arm in arm—and, of course, all that dancing builds up an appetite, so head for the food and beverage stalls and enjoy the traditional Bajan fare. Fish cakes, jug-jug (guinea corn and green peas), fried fish, all washed down with a Banks Beer.

ISLAND EXPLORING

When you see pictures of Barbados, you may think it to be just white sand beaches and coconut trees, but there is so much more to the island, and we recommend checking out a couple of spots that are off the beaten path. If you’re adventurous and want to drive, Google maps is necessary to maneuver your way around winding country roads. If getting lost isn’t your style, sign up for an island tour where you and your friends can hop in the back of an open-top Jeep and enjoy the sights with an off-road twist. Embrace Barbados’s nature, history, culture, and folklore at captivating places of interest.

UNDERGROUND AT HARRISON’S CAVES

One of Barbados’ unique experiences is exploring the underground world of Harrison’s Cave, an extensive limestone cavern. filled with stalactites, stalagmites, a flowing stream, and deep pools. On an electric tram, you ride through 3 miles of tunnels and open areas.

VISIT TROPICAL GARDENS

There is no shortage of horticultural treats. Among the best are Andromeda Botanic Gardens, above the Bathsheba coastline on the east coast. Then, take in  Flower Forest and  Hunte’s Gardens. All three sites are a feast for the eyes with an abundance of soaring trees, flowering bushes, and unusual plants.

TAKE A HIKE

Barbados is flat, making the island prime for casual hikes, and more strenuous treks. The Barbados National Trust sponsors Hike Barbados from beginner to more experienced hikes all offered in the morning afternoon. The walks are free, and you’re grouped according to your ability. They also run cross-country and moonlight treks. On any hike be sure to have a good sun hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water on hand.

BATHSHEBA BEACH

Bathsheba Beach, which sits on Barbados’ east coast, is a photographer’s and surfer’s paradise. For photographers, Bathsheba offers dramatic rock formations. And for surfers, there’s the beach’s famous Soup Bowl, where top-notch waves can be found. Named after the area’s foamy water, the Soup Bowl is so well-known that international surfing competitions are regularly held here. Like other Bajan beaches, Bathsheba Beach is free to visit. Although the water is not safe for swimming, visitors can dip their toes into one of several tide pools.

VISIT WHERE WASHINGTON SLEPT

Now a museum, this 18th-century plantation house (also known as Bush Hill House) was the base for George Washington and his sick half-brother Lawrence for two months in 1751. The Washington brothers traveled to the island, hoping the tropical climate of Barbados could cure him. Now a museum, exhibits feature artifacts from the 18th century, secret tunnels discovered under the house, and a 15-minute film about Washington’s time in Barbados.

REEFS & WRECKS

Scuba divers can swim among colorful fish and view other underwater wonders. On the south coast, nearby there are six shipwrecks to explore, where you may even discover centuries-old cannon balls. There are also plenty of dive sites with visibility as much as 80 to 90 feet.

Despite their cuteness, the green monkeys are wild animals. On a walk through  Welchman Hall Gully, you’ll see many of these creatures in their natural surroundings. Watch as they munch on bananas and swing. The area is a 1.5-mile pathway of tropical trees, flowering plants, butterflies and birds, and monkeys.

HAVERSTRAW

One of the most ethnically and culturally diverse river towns, Haverstraw has a bustling downtown brimming with small familyowned shops and various eclectic restaurants. Haverstraw’s unique historical place engenders the phrase “The Town that Built Manhattan.” This is because Haverstraw was once home to as many as 42 brickyards, making it “the brick-making capital of the world.” The Haverstraw Brick Museum details the area’s brick-making heritage and its vital role in supplying the construction materials of many of New York City’s brick buildings.

Be sure to explore the GARNER Arts/Historic District in the tiny hamlet of Garnerville. This pre-Civil War textile mill is now an artistic/ cultural hub, with a collection of artist studios, exhibit galleries, special events, live performances, film screenings, a Creekside sculpture trail, and home to Industrial Arts Brewing taproom.

Visit Haverstraw Beach & State Park to enjoy the riverside beauty and take in a bit of history. On this site back in 1780, American General Benedict Arnold and British spy John Andre exchanged plans to overtake West Point.

STONY POINT

Stony Point is a town rich in history. The Stony Point Battlefield State Historic Site marks the July 16, 1779, Battle of Stony Point, in which General “Mad” Anthony Wayne led 1,350 Continental Army troops in a surprise attack against the British just before midnight. The battlefield is now home to a museum and park where Revolutionary War reenactments occur yearly. The historic Stony Point Lighthouse, the oldest on the Hudson River, also resides within the park.

BEAUTIFUL BADEN-BADEN

TAKE IT EASY IN GERMANY’S SPA TOWN

Ihad always wanted to see Baden-Baden, Germany, as that magical spa town has always been part of my family lore. This was the place where my name began, as in 1809, an immigrant named Karl Peter chose to leave this picturesque place to seek a different life in the United States. When he arrived, he added an “s” to his last name to make it seem more English, and the rest, as they say, is when the history of my Peters family in America began.

That’s old family lore that we came from the Black Forest in southern Germany. And now, finally, I was arriving by train to this place that became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021, as one of the 11 Great Spa Towns of Europe, places that UNESCO reveals “bear witness to the international European spa culture that developed from the early 18th century,” which developed into “an urban context that includes a carefully managed recreational and therapeutic environment in a picturesque landscape.”

In other words, Baden-Baden is a spectacularly beautiful place, nestled by the Oos River in a valley in the Black Forest Mountain range, where hot springs have bubbled out of the ground since the Celts and then the Romans settled here to be healed by the thermal waters that still draw visitors to the famed spas located at the top of this picturesque cobblestoned, hilly place.

From the train station (you’ll want to fly into Stuttgart, Frankfurt, or Zurich, then catch a train), hop on the bus into the center of town and book into one of the lovely hotels in the center. The luxurious Atlantic Parkhotel Baden-Baden is one of the best; the Rose Hotel Baden-Baden is a bit more basic. However, both are in perfect spots for seeing everything in this compact little city.

WANDERING THE STREETS

From the moment you arrive in the city center, it’s evident that Baden-Baden lives up to its reputation. Tree-lined streets with picturesque architecture evoke the 18th and 19th centuries, with lovely shops and eateries tucked away inside and sidewalk cafés perfect for people-watching. Skinny cobblestone streets wend upward, just calling out to be explored (remember to bring good walking shoes when you visit). Ancient churches, a Baroque opera house, Roman ruins in a parking lot, the famous castle-like Casino, and fresco-lined Trinkhalle—all will fill an afternoon with delight.

See the many museums this small city offers, take a nature hike up into the wooded hills, and don’t miss the Stiftskirche, high atop the town, for it is the oldest building, constructed in 987. You’ll find that near the famed spas that helped put Baden-Baden on the map, so bring your swimsuit along (or not) to plunge in once your body is ready for some serious relaxation.

TAKING THE WATERS

When you’re ready to see what all the watery fuss is about, two spa choices are next door. Both offer experiences in the hot mineral waters that constantly bubble out of the ground here, rising from 6,500 feet below the surface and packed with healthy mineral elements, including sodium, chloride, fluoride, lithium, silicic acid, and boron. It’s the same waters my ancestor experienced over 200 years ago!

The Friedrichsbad is the original Roman bath, opening in 1877 with an incredible circuit of 17 stations combining changing temperatures and different bath experiences. The exterior and interior of this bath are so spectacular that you may want to visit every day you are in Baden-Baden. But, like most wellness spas in Germany, note that this is a coed nudist spa, so don’t consider going if that makes you uncomfortable. It’s an incredible place that even boasts the ruins of the Roman hotel that was here 2,000 years ago; touring this fascinating place is extra.

The Carasana is next door, newer, and much less expensive to visit, which makes it more crowded and often full of kids and adults. This spa requires swimsuits (except for in the sauna) and has indoor and outdoor spaces where families, couples, and singles can experience the waters and spend the day enjoying this special place.

WHEN THE SUN SETS

Don’t imagine that the sidewalks roll up after dark in Baden-Baden, as it is also the home of the elaborately designed Casino, with its gaming tables and nightclub, where famous faces like Marlene Dietrich have put on their finest and partied the night away. Elegant dining is also a part of the scene here, with brewpubs and gourmet dining (try Hectors near the Casino for a delicious meal topped off with excellent chocolates and coffees) as well as French brasseries influenced by that country’s proximity.

No matter what you choose to do in Baden-Baden, it doesn’t take an ancestral connection to realize that this is one extraordinary place in the European landscape and a not-to-miss spot in all Germany offers.

GET READY FOR A FUN ESCAPE

Throughout my recent visit to New Hope, PA, I felt slightly unsettled by the subtle and notso-subtle changes around me. However, it was still New Hope, the place I first visited during the Carter administration, the town that constantly wavered between quirky and chic, the nostalgic village where I regularly brought my family, and my favorite weekend vacation spot.

As I wandered through the streets of New Hope, I realized I was searching for a sense of recognition: what had changed, and what remained the same? Of course, nothing stays the same; change is inevitable. Also, it was the first time I visited New Hope sans family. I was there as a journalist, searching for a story rather than a tour guide leading loved ones down memory lane.

The Delaware River, which acts as the backdrop for the neighboring towns of Lambertville on the New Jersey side and New Hope on the Pennsylvania side, looked the same as always, the still waters save for the slight ripples caused by passing mallards. Finally, after a mere two-hour drive from New York City, the GPS voice announced, “Welcome to Pennsylvania.”

The walkable town of New Hope consists mainly of establishments north and south on Main Street and along West Bridge Street, forming a large “T,” which will satisfy the eager traveler fully. Here are experiences for all tastes, from local art to antiques to specialty food shops to gourmet restaurants. New shops emerged for each tried-and-true shop that disappeared over the years, often a bit more polished, less unique, and sometimes mainstream, like Dunkin’ Donuts and Starbucks.

PLENTY OF NOSTALGIA

The mini-mall on S. Main Street has been replaced by New Hope Ferry Market, a food court with thirteen different vendors, indoor and outdoor seating, and a view across the street to the Logan Inn, which dates to 1727. The Logan Inn caters to couples looking for a romantic getaway and multigenerational families, many of whom have likely visited New Hope before. After a recent refurbishing, it brings a new level of luxury to a town where luxury was measured by the fresh air and the sweet aromas coming from shops such as Moo Hope Ice Cream (their flavors: lavender coconut, Nutella, coffee Oreo, teaberry, and twentyeight more, is undoubtedly a form of luxury).

In searching for the immutable, I visited Love Saves the Day, a vintage shop overflowing with memorabilia from decades past, heavy in Elvis, Marilyn, and kitsch, which seemed a bit spruced up with more elbow room than I recalled (perhaps the effect of social distancing). Nevertheless, there is still plenty of nostalgia to explore, from vintage clothing to collectible toys to an antique fortune teller machine reminiscent of the movie Big

QUAINT SHOPS

Another layer of acceptance and quirk that enchanted me on many of my visits to New Hope was the Wicca stores. On this trip, I wandered into Witch Shop Gypsy Heaven, a subterranean cornucopia of witchcraft supplies and paraphernalia. As I deliberated about whom I wished to cast a spell upon in my past, I struck up a conversation with Ginger, an associate, who was metaphorically manning the cauldron. Our twohour conversation brought us to discussions about the changes within New Hope, the power of the items that surrounded us, relationships, books we recommend, and the magic of living not for sale on the shelves.

The next hot spot was my visit to Suzies Hot Shoppe, a casual establishment that proudly displays its spicy sauces and pepper-infused treats like a gun shop displays its deadly weapons. Glenn Goldsmith discussed the shop’s history. He then showed me a shelf of hot sauces with such colorful names as “Ass Reaper,” “Day of the Dead,” and “Mustard Gas Sauce.”

Sometimes the old is replaced by the new, yet the old is still remembered. On the second floor of what was once  Wildflowers, a Thai-inspired restaurant steps off the main road,  Nektar Wine Bar offers light, gourmet dishes paired with a choice of wine off a robust list of vintages. The flight of wine I chose brought my palate to Israel, Argentina, and Australia as I munched on meatball sliders and truffle ravioli. For a kind homage, Nektar displays a sign in its stairwell from its predecessor, Wildflower; the old and the new once again converge.

BEST STAY

My home base for this journey was Olivia’s Bridge Street Inn, a thoughtfully curated Bed and Breakfast that overlooks the New Hope Canal, once well-known for its mule-drawn barge rides. Though lethargic barges are a thing of the past, Olivia’s is alive with comfort, camaraderie, and cuisine. Described on its website as “iconic elegance,” Olivia’s room and common spaces are beautifully decorated, airy, and comfortable. Mike Lawson, General Manager, is funny, welcoming, informative, and generous. Besides the healthy and tasty menu offerings, the main table in the dining room is always filled with primarily homemade drinks and snacks.

So, it is obvious what has changed in New Hope. A distinct polished look has emerged. I left New Hope with an understanding that the things that never change are more abstract. There remains a sense of acceptance here for all lifestyles and tastes. New Hope, despite the unavoidability of change, in a world of accelerated impermanence, whispered to me with echoes from a time when I was young and thought I had found paradise,

ATLANTA’S DIVERSE APPEAL

The massive Georgia Aquarium and the incredibly compelling and emotionally wrenching National Center for Civil and Human Rights are also in this park area.

The center explores the American civil rights movement and the global struggle for freedom for all in a striking mix of hands-on experiences, video and audio displays, and more. All those places are included in the CityPASS and the Zoo Atlanta.

MLK’s LEGACY

Following in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s footsteps throughout Atlanta is an emotional-filled experience. The city was his birthplace, where he grew up in the Old Fourth Ward, went to Morehouse College, and eventually became not only the pastor at the Ebenezer Baptist Church but the most important voice of the ‘50s and ‘60s Black civil rights movement. Today, King and his wife, Coretta, are interred in a large memorial at the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park.

Two excellent tours help visitors understand King’s history and legacy and how Atlanta eventually evolved into today’s multicultural city. Don’t leave Atlanta without having an elegant Southern-influenced dinner at South City Kitchen in Buckhead (their fried green tomatoes are the stuff of legend). One bite of the herb-crusted pork loin, and we’re sure you’ll be a fan, too.

Dear Mindie,

I recently had a very uncomfortable and disturbing encounter while out with my friend’s friend for drinks. They are both Black, and I am White, which is essential to note. As the conversation flowed, somehow, we got onto the topic of race. My friend’s friend shared that she attended a boarding school as a teen and hated every minute. When I asked why she did not like her experience there, she said she felt she did not fit in as her classmates were all White. She then told me she disliked all White people.

I did not know what to say at this moment, and despite my deep desire to tell her off, knowing that had I shared the same sentiment toward Black people (which I do not possess), it would have created a massive confrontation. So, in my effort to not cause a scene in a public place, I changed the subject, but I am very angry and bothered by this encounter and know I will cross paths again with this woman. How do I handle a future encounter, as race is always something this person leans in on?

Dear Frustrated,

While this situation is tense, upsetting, and teeters on abusive, I am confident it’s like thousands of similar conversations—on both sides of the aisle—taking place in America today. We have the racial climate to thank for that, and while it’s always important to speak one’s mind and have these tough conversations, the past hostility (again, from both sides) has created an unfortunate rift in our country.

In psychology, we always try to see circumstances and situations from the patient’s perspective to best serve and treat them. I suggest you do the same in this case. While she’s not your “patient,” you can try and see things from her lens. She went to an all-white boarding school, where she must have experienced much negativity and likely trauma from how her peers may have treated her. While what she said to you is inexcusable, she is likely speaking from a place of pain and suffering. Whatever happened in her past harmed her, and this is sadly how she is stereotyping all White people as a result. So, instead of being angry, and I understand why you are, I would look at the situation from a place of curiosity. What made her say that? What happened in her past? What anecdotes might she be willing to share with you as a Black woman to a White woman from her past experiences? You are not the root of her problem nor responsible for any turmoil she may have encountered, but we can all learn from one another.

Learning about what may have caused her pain may be enlightening for you. And her sharing that pain with a White person may be healing for her. I advise you to offer your daughter some insight regarding what is appropriate to convey over a text versus an in-person conversation.

Race is and always will be a touchy subject matter. But we must speak about it. We must acknowledge we are all different. There are no shades of gray. It’s Black and White (and Brown), which is beautiful.

Differences make us stronger. They enable us to grow and evolve, as well. So, I suggest the next time you see this woman be curious, not confrontational. Learn from her, and hopefully, she will also be open to learning from you. And pay your curiosity forward. If we were more open to learning and listening, there would be less fighting and friction.

67 ORANGE STREET

If you’re looking for a casual, convivial night out, head to 67 Orange Street, the Harlem craft cocktail bar founded by visionary entrepreneur Karl Franz Williams. What drew Williams, a corporate whiz kid turned cocktail king, to Harlem? Many moons ago (the 1840s, to be exact), there was a famous downtown bar, a sizzling speakeasy in a notorious neighborhood, Five Points (aka the setting for Scorsese’s Gangs of New York). The secret to its success? Gangsters mingling with businessmen and politicians; it’s said that even Charles Dickens patronized the place.

Karl Franz Williams found the story of this speakeasy and the way, even in a rough neighborhood, it brought the community together to be inspiring. So, abandoning his corporate career, he founded  67 Orange Street, now a community staple where downtown meets uptown. He wants all to recognize that “there is nothing like the energy, vibe, feel, and people that make summer nights at 67 Orange Street unforgettable.”

SUGAR MONK LOUNGE

Art, mixology, and alchemy merge with every sip of a cocktail at  Sugar Monk Lounge, steps from the Apollo Theatre in Harlem. Inspiration for  Sugar Monk may have come from Harlem’s speakeasies, but its approach to cocktails is modern and remarkably inventive. The founders conceived the space with Art Deco flair and hosted by Ektoras Binikos, an accomplished mixologist and visual artist, and Simon Jutras, a photographer, and designer.

Dad will love the quiet elegance of the space. The lighting is low, and the vibe is a luxe, Art Deco-inspired escape. The sophisticated cocktails, each an unusual statement of craftsmanship, are made from the freshest ingredients. If you need to nibble while you imbibe foraged cocktails, there is a menu of small savory dishes and desserts. Please don’t skip the truffle popcorn. It is addictive perfection.

If Dad loves his whiskey, shake things up and order the Marie Laveau, spectacularly presented Bourbon infused with fliscouni, a Greek mountain mint; Amaro, black and green cardamom; and Sugar Monk’s orange bitters. The mixture is then smoked with Applewood chips and arrives inside a glass dome. If Dad’s looking for something with less fanfare, there are classics like martinis or negronis, each with that Sugar Monk twist on the new Before Nightfall menu (aka Happy Hour from 5 - 7 pm daily).

BRASSERIE COGNAC

THE PERFECT FRENCH BISTRO

Do you have the constant food fantasy of living near one of Paris’ premiere bistros? Do you dream of dipping Escargot with a buttery garlic sauce or having Crepes Suzette for brunch?

If you are anywhere near Midtown, there’s Brasserie Cognac—a super authentic, reasonably priced bistro owned by the team that brought you Serafina. Portions are genuine and sizeable; they don’t mind you sharing dishes, and service is fast and friendly. An edible flower on each plate has become the eatery’s trademark, making your food social media-ready!

Brasserie Cognac, which has an older branch on the Upper East Side, is smack dab in the center of Midtown on 48th and Lexington (in Hotel 48LEX) and is successful not only because of the solid French fare but because of its location and near Grand Central. It’s perched right on a NE corner which is highly trafficked, and has a glamorous, almost classic Hollywood-styled exterior that makes passersby curious.

Is that buttery scent of a French bakery constantly wafting out of its front door? Yes, and who can pass that up?

A DEFINITE FRENCH FLARE

Serafina  has been a successful NYC area Italian restaurant chain for years. Still, owners Vittorio Assaf and Fabio Granato were urged to start a new project known as “Serafina’s French little sister.” They have succeeded beyond their wildest dreams.  Brasserie Cognac opened its doors in March, and it’s the only restaurant of its kind anywhere in the neighborhood. Sure, there are chain French café/bakery types of places, such as  Pain Quotidien nearby, but Brasserie Cognac offers a full French breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Both owners believe opening restaurants is not just about striving for authentic cuisine but about creating “affordable luxury.”

Granato tells  NYL  that while he is delighted with  Brasserie Cognac’s great initial reception, “We want corporate events and a group of regular business professionals to make Brasserie their go-to spot.”

GO-TO DISHES

During the  NYL’s recent visit to  Brasserie Cognac, we decided to assess a few French classics and pick a “wild card” item. There is a little secret that will be getting around soon—a “pasta special” is usually not on the menu, and it has no real name!

It’s homemade pasta that is halfway between spaghetti and linguine and has a garlicky winebased truffle sauce. There are dozens of thick truffle shavings on top and, of course, the classic edible purple flower enhancing each dish. The portion is about three cups, so it is great to share, and it’s as good as anything in even the most high-end Southern Italian eatery. Be warned that it will fill you up, though. It’s also priced like a typical pasta dish—which is almost unbelievable!

BRING ON THE BEEF

The  Beef Bourguignon is also exceptional because rather than just chunks of short rib in a wine sauce with pearl onions and mixed veggies, there is a massive slab of the juiciest boneless short rib in the middle of the plate. There is less sauce than in the classic version of this French favorite, but the chef at Brasserie Cognac likes to let their tender meat do the talking!

We ended the evening with a classic French dessert. The  Profiteroles are amazing: think of three large cream puffs filled with homemade vanilla ice cream with a little pitcher of homemade sauce made with—you guessed it—French chocolate. We hear that the  Crème Brulee and the Tarte Tatin are in a league of their own, but we will save those for another visit.

NEW FOR SUMMER

Restauranteurs Assaf and Granato are preparing for the onslaught of warm weather diners with a couple of new twists to the menu. “We have an  Oyster And Rose pairing that we think will be a highlight of the summer menu.” They did early testing of this combo in early May with excellent results.

Who is the typical clientele of Brasserie Cognac? Granato tells us, “It is mainly business professionals coming in for lunch or happy hour and hotel guests.” But he’s in for a pleasant surprise when, this summer, people from all walks of life who love French fare start to line up outside. (In the New York food world, gossip about great food at reasonable prices travels fast!) Certainly, they have done a fantastic job growing  Serafina  into a huge local chain. And we predict that Brasserie Cognac will become an even bigger sensation. The no-rush atmosphere, classy décor, and comfortable ambiance will make you want to stay all day and at least nurse a glass of one of their great French wines or their amazing  Champagne Cocktail made with Stoli Vodka, St. Germain, Raspberries, and Champagne.  BC will become your go-to spot for Summer 2023, no matter what neighborhood you’re staying in!

ALEXEI TARTAKOVSKY

A CLASSICAL ACT

Star pianist Alexei Tartakovsky is set to perform at the legendary Merkin Hall in New York City on Friday, June 9th, 2023. His performance at Merkin Hall will be a masterclass in piano recitals. Alexei’s performance will include a repertoire with classical pieces from Beethoven, Schumann and Rachmaninoff.

Laureate of the 2021 International Beethoven Competition in Bonn, Germany, RussianAmerican pianist Alexei Tartakovsky has been called a “fantastic musician and pianist” by Martha Argerich and “truly exceptional…superb playing…a thoughtful and serious musician” by the New York Concert Review. His tonal palette, profound musicianship, superb technique, and exciting artistic approach have thrilled audiences worldwide and established him as one of the brightest talents of his generation.

FIRST-RATE

He first brought attention to his artistry by winning three top prizes in a one-year span (20062007) at the Rolf and Brigitte Gardey International Competition in Daytona Beach, Florida, The New York Piano Competition, and the American Fine Arts Festival (AFAF) in New York, which resulted in his performing at Weill Recital Hall (Carnegie Hall).

Immediately after, he became a laureate of the James Mottram International Piano Competition in Manchester (UK) and received 1st prize at the Heida Hermanns International Piano Competition, which he won with unanimous decision by the judges, who called him a “phenomenal, first-rate pianist” and “a monumental talent”. Additional prizes include 1st prize at the New York Concert Artists International Competition in 2011. In 2012, he swept all three prizes at the San Jose International Competition: 1st Prize, Audience Prize, and prize for the best performance of a Russian work.

Since then, he has given concerts both solo and with orchestra in the USA, Canada, Mexico, Russia, Europe, China, and Japan at halls that include the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the Warsaw Philharmonic, Yokohama Minato Mirai Hall, and Carnegie Hall. His playing has been broadcast on Dutch Radio 4, Polish Radio 2, Russian Radio Orpheus, Chicago’s WFMT, and New York’s WQXR. Among the orchestras Tartakovsky has performed with are the Jacksonville Symphony, the North Czech Philharmonic, the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn (Germany), and the Symphonic Orchestra of the Voronezh Concert Hall (Russia). Conductors Tartakovsky has collaborated with include Gerard Schwarz, Hans Graf, Fabio Mechetti, Nurhan Arman, Maurice Peress, Yuri Androsov, and Clark Rundell.

A highlight of his career was his outstanding performance at the 2015 Chopin International Competition in Warsaw, where he was a semifinalist. In 2016, Tartakovsky was awarded the French Prize at the Cleveland International Piano Competition. In 2021, he received both the 2nd Prize and the Deutsche Telekom StreamOn Beethoven Award at the International Telekom Beethoven Competition in Bonn, Germany.

Among the musicians he has studied with are Matti Raekallio, Nina Lelchuk, Boris Slutsky, Boris Berman, and Horacio Gutierrez. Tartakovsky completed his undergraduate studies at Juilliard and Queens College (CUNY), received his Master of Music degree from the Peabody Conservatory, and an Artist Diploma from the Yale School of Music. He is currently a doctoral candidate as a student of Richard Goode at The Graduate Center of the City University of New York, where he was awarded the coveted Graduate Center Fellowship.

Tartakovsky teaches at Brooklyn College (CUNY), is Music Director at Church of the Holy Spirit in Lebanon, New Jersey, and maintains a private studio in Raritan, New Jersey.

ANITA DURST: VISIONARY FOUNDER OF CHASHAMA

Anita Durst is the founder and visionary behind ChaShaMa, the 25-year-old non-profit that supports artists and small business owners by donating space to create, present, perform and work.

I hate to compare women to one another, but the parallels between Anita Durst and Peggy Guggenheim are too big to ignore. Bohemian, intelligent, patrons of the arts, and artists in their own right; both Durst and Guggenheim were born into affluent Jewish families with robust businesses and social connections. Both spent much of their young adulthood in Europe, living and working with avant-garde artists. Guggenheim used her resources to buy and collect young artists’ work, eventually connecting them with museums and patrons. Durst joined the Avant-Garde theater company Dar A Laz after high school and performed with the group throughout Europe until the death of its director, Reza Aboh. Durst returned to New York City, and in 1995, she founded ChaShama.

Guggenheim changed the lives of hundreds of artists throughout her life. Durst has managed to scale her ChaShaMa organization to award over $11 million worth of real estate to artists annually. Through ChaShaMa, Durst subsidizes 300 artist workspaces, 200+ artists receive free space to present, 250+ free art classes are happening, and 75 small businesses receive free space each year. So, is Anita Durst, the modern-day Peggy Guggenheim? I think so.

I asked Anita about her inspiration for ChaShaMa, and how to get involved.

You started your career as a performer. Tell us about your performance training/inspiration and early work.

Reza Aboh taught me the strength of having a clear vision and would push our limits past our comfort zone and ask us to dig deeper. The work was raw, loud, fast, somewhat naked, in your face, angry, and was toured all over Europe. Reza taught me not to be afraid and always look the audience directly in the eye and break the fourth wall.

Why was it important to you to continue his legacy when your mentor died?

It was important for other people to feel the power of creativity that Reza had taught me.

ChaShaMa started with a few dozen spaces in New York City. Explain how and why it was necessary to expand beyond NYC.

ON TRACK TO ENDING DOG RACING

The fight to end dog racing has been championed by GREY2K USA Worldwide, the non-profit dedicated to passing greyhound protection laws and ending the cruelty of dog racing. For nearly twenty-five years, the organization has successfully spearheaded legislative initiatives and promoted the adoption of these gentle hounds across the globe.

The inspiration for GREY2K USA dates to 1992 when co-founder Christine Dorchak and her dog Kelsey were struck by a speeding train. Amazingly, Kelsey managed to pull Christine to safety, likely preventing a head-on collision and saving both of their lives. When she awoke from her coma, Christine’s first words were, “How’s Kelsey?” She was so grateful that she promised to dedicate her life to helping dogs from her hospital bed. This commitment would be fulfilled almost a decade later, in 2001, when she and Carey Theil started GREYK USA from a one-room basement office outside Boston.

Fast forward to today, and commercial dog racing is now illegal in 42 U.S. states, remaining legal and operational in just one. In addition, Christine’s group has closed dozens of tracks and prevented the legalization of greyhound gambling in countries such as South Africa, Jamaica, and the Philippines.

One key victory was the passage of a referendum in Florida. In 2018, 69 percent of Floridians went to the polls and outlawed dog racing, shutting down twelve dog tracks with just one vote. That same year, GREY2K USA and ANIMA Macau worked to shut down China’s only legal dog track, the Canidrome, and airlift over 500 surviving greyhounds to safety. One of these dogs was named Brooklyn, who came to live with Christine and Carey.

New York Lifestyles had the pleasure of meeting Christine to ask her more about her mission and the future of greyhounds.

BROOKLYN AND GINA

Christine, please share your story with us.  Since I was a child, I have always been a problem solver. So, when I learned that 2,000 dogs were confined in tiny cages and forced to run for their lives at two racetracks in my state, I had to do something to save them. I am from New Jersey, and we don’t allow dog racing, but I discovered that since 1934, innocent greyhounds had been racing and dying in Massachusetts. Worse, perhaps, no one seemed to care. It was just “business as usual” to them. Some people even said that greyhounds were racing machines, so it was OK to treat them differently than other dogs. It was appalling.

In 1997, my friends and I began picketing outside Wonderland Park in Revere, Massachusetts. This was one of the country’s oldest and most historic tracks, and it was rumored that the bodies of dead dogs were buried all around the property. In fact, the greyhound racing industry was first introduced by the likes of gangsters such as Al Capone and Meyer Lansky. So, there was a definite aspect of personal risk in what we were doing. But we knew that greyhounds were being hurt, and someone had to fight for them. If not us, who?

Our goal was to end dog racing in our home state, and we believed with all of our hearts that we would succeed that year! Little did we know that opposing dog racing would mean taking on some of the wealthiest and most politically connected track owners in the country, being sued for $10 million, collecting over 150,000 signatures twice, losing statewide in the year 2000—all before finally winning in 2008.

How did you get to where you are today?

The most important thing I can tell you is that I am not particularly beautiful or athletic, or smart. But one thing I am is determined. No matter who you are, you can make a difference in this world. Take risks. Try to do something to help others. Most of all, don’t be afraid to lose. You may surprise yourself. But time is short. Carpe diem!

Has it been an easy journey? How did you overcome the bumps in the road?

Some would say that I have overcome many significant challenges, but nothing I have been through compares to the suffering of non-human animals. For example, when I was hurt and pronounced dead as I lay on the train tracks, an entire emergency team used their best skills and training to bring me back to life. By comparison, when a greyhound is hurt, he is worthless and faces immediate death by a cruel industry. This is the kind of injustice I am fighting.

Describe what a day is like for a racing greyhound? No matter where they are, racing greyhounds are confined in small metal cages inside dark warehouse-style kennel buildings for an average of 23 hours a day. (Imagine these majestic dogs living in stacked chicken coops). They are fed a diet based on diseased meat. There are no toys for them and no play. Their “beds” consist of shredded newspaper or old carpet scraps.

When these gentle hounds are let out to race several times a month, they risk serious injury. A dog died every three days in Florida until 2018 when we were able to pass our voter question. And 2,000 West Virginia hounds continue to suffer today, risking crushed skulls, fractured legs, torn and twisted muscles, seizures, heat stroke and paralysis at every turn. Drugging and race-fixing are also a problem. And once a greyhound is no longer profitable, he must go. It is up to the kennel owner whether he lives or dies. Racing greyhounds are highly disposable, and in countries like Australia, the term “wastage” is used for all the surplus pups and ex-racers summarily killed yearly.

I understand you have a book coming out. What is it about? Brooklyn Goes Home: The Rise and Fall of American Greyhound Racing and the Dog that Inspired a Movement has just been released. It is the story of our campaigns to save greyhounds and a remembrance of an extraordinary dog named Brooklyn. Our sweet boy spent eight years on death row, trapped in a dark, dirty concrete cell at a Chinese racetrack. Yet he held no grudges. Instead, he met each day joyfully, greeting anyone he encountered with a happy wag of his tail and a big smile. He taught us so much about true love and forgiveness.

Brooklyn Goes Home is also the account of our state-by-state efforts to shut down dog racing beginning in 2001, culminating in the introduction of the U.S. Greyhound Protection in the 117th Congress. We continue to fight for the passage of this historic bill.

Now that you have almost wiped-out U.S. dog racing, what is the biggest challenge to realizing your goal?

Originally, our goals were met when a track closed or stopped live racing. But the industry has gained at least a temporary lifeline with the advent of online wagering. Someone with a cell phone can place a bet on races happening anywhere. This has provided a path forward for greyhound gamblers. In January, we launched our online #TwinSpiresCruelty petition to expose the new wave of remote gambling propping up a despicable industry. As part of this campaign, we flew a 75-foot-banner over the Kentucky Derby to let people know that Churchill Downs (CHDN) is now using its online gambling platform, Twin Spires, to take bets on cruel dog racing in the U.S. and Mexico. As a result, American greyhounds are being run to the ground at the Agua Caliente track in Tijuana. Fidelity Investments is the largest investor in CHDN, and we encourage everyone who cares about dogs to write to CEO Abigail Johnson and ask her to drop dog races too.

How can readers adopt a greyhound? Are there special tips for caring for this breed?

This may surprise you, but greyhounds are like giant cats! They are quiet, calm, rarely bark, and do not shed. Greyhounds are often called 45-mile-per-hour couch potatoes because they love to sleep. Returning to CaringKind is like coming home for Eleonora Tornatore-Mikesh. After graduating from college, she trained as a specialist in aging and dementia at CaringKind (formally the Alzheimer’s Association of New York City), working as a research associate for two years on culture change in nursing homes and assisted living residences. She credits her knowledge and expertise to the training she received at CaringKind.

Eleonora then moved to Connecticut and spent almost 14 years as the executive director at a premier assisted living community. Eleonora was recently named CEO of the Alzheimer’s Association’s Connecticut Chapter. During her tenure of 7 years, Eleonora created a statewide early-stage group and secured funding for the state. In addition, she also served as chairperson for the Connecticut Assisted Living Association (CALA), where she created a statewide curriculum for an Executive Director course. This was followed as a senior executive for Assisted Living on the Upper East Side, charged with program development.

New York Lifestyles met with Eleonora TornatoreMikesh to learn more about this dynamic woman.

Tell us what brought you to this specific career. I was born in Italy and came to this country when I was six years old. I have had the pleasure of returning to Italy and other countries and witnessing how elders are treated and viewed in society. In other countries, elders are respected and typically honored as the head of the household. In this country, aging is viewed very differently. So, early in high school, I knew this would be my passion and mission in my career.

I began working in hospitals as a candy stripper and volunteering in nursing facilities on weekends and after school. Every time I entered or visited a resident, the feeling was indescribable; the pure joy these aged adults expressed was enough for me. So, after high school, I decided to major in psychology and sociology for my undergraduate and graduate, and postgraduate, gerontology and thanatology.

As I progressed in my career, I continuously sought opportunities to educate myself, collaborate with professionals in the field, and actively engage with caregiver communities. As a result, my commitment to this cause has only grown stronger over the years.

What makes you wake up in the morning?

For those who know me, I am non-stop talking about work as it’s my passion and a true privilege to advocate for families as a trusted partner during a challenging journey in their lives. We offer diverse services, such as support groups, educational programs, and personalized counseling. However, the knowledge that our work positively impacts people’s lives motivates me each day.

Tell us more about CaringKind and its mission.

CaringKind is a fantastic organization dedicated to helping those affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia.

The mission of CaringKind is to create, deliver and promote comprehensive and compassionate care and support services for individuals and families affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias and to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research.

Is there one person who has inspired you through your career?

I want to say that one individual inspired me to go into this field, but it was the opposite. It was an individual in college, a guidance counselor, who said to me, “Why does a young, pretty lady like yourself want to work in depressing nursing homes.” At that moment, I knew I would be working in nursing facilities advocating for people in the aged population and those with memory loss. Her comment has been a driving force for me to recruit as many young mentees as possible out of college to enter the field of aging. It is one of the most rewarding jobs one could have.

Whether it’s a casual happy hour, an intimate cocktail party, or a neighborhood get-together,  The 2-Hour Cocktail Party provides readers with the tools to make any event successful.

New York Lifestyles caught up with Gray just in time for the summer party season.

What is the purpose of your book?

To teach people how to host a happy hour that will help them make new friends, meet their neighbors, and build their network.

What inspired this?

I went to many unpleasant events in New York City— networking events, loud parties, all these things that were extremely hard to meet new people. So, I decided to learn how to host a good party. Then my friends asked me how to host their parties. So, I made a Google doc that got passed around, eventually turning into my book,  The 2-Hour Cocktail Party.

Please share with our readers some quick tips.

· Host your gathering on a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday night. These are not socially competitive nights, so you will have a higher attendance rate and make it easier for people to say yes to your invitation.

· Make sure you set both a start time and an end time.

· Limit your event to only 2 hours long.

· Use name tags and a short series of introductions.

· Send a series of 3 reminder messages.

How did you learn this?

When I first moved to New York City, I did not have excellent social skills—but I knew I wanted to meet people. Everyone wants to be invited to a party. It was an uncomplicated way for me to meet new people. I ended up hosting hundreds of happy hours, dinner parties, networking events, and cocktail parties. Through trial and error, I learned that there was a formula for a successful event that anyone could understand. I call it the “NICK party formula.”

What inspired you to start planning parties?

There’s a loneliness epidemic or a “friendship recession” happening. I moved to New York City to meet new people and make friends. I wanted to be surrounded by people who would inspire me.

How will this help people overcome insecurity, anxiety, etc.?

Most people need to remember how to gather and make small talk! I’ve written a step-by-step guide that shows how even introverts can be successful and learn how to host a party or a happy hour. People with social anxiety want to know what to expect. When you let them know an approximate agenda, who will be there, and what they might have in common with them, that helps to give them the confidence and courage to show up, start new conversations, and meet new people.

What has your experience with New York City been like?

There is no place like it: the people, the talent, the creative class, the food, the culture. New York City is unique. I launched my last business there, Museum Hack, where we worked at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. That is my favorite museum in the entire world.

THE VIENNESE OPERA BALL

CELEBRATING 67 YEARS

Viennese Opera Ball held its annual celebration for the 67th year at The Plaza in New York City with over 400 guests under the auspices of the U.S. Austrian Chamber of Commerce and organized by Executive Director Silvia Frieser and The Event Atelier. The Gala chairs for the evening were philanthropist Jean Shafiroff, who was also honored for her charitable endeavors, and Denise Rich. This gala benefitted Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation for Cancer Research. It was “A Night Inspired by Carmen” from the opera Carmen by Bizet, led under the artistic direction of Daniel Serafin with Austrian conductor Maestro Vinicius Kattah.

Since 1955, the Viennese Opera Ball in New York has represented Vienna’s cultural legacy, elegance, and glamour in the Big Apple. The Ball operates as a cultural platform and builds bridges to connect present-day New York City with 19th-century Vienna. People of varying heritages, continents, and generations bring traditional glamour to the city that never sleeps.

The vice chairs were Sylvia Hemingway and Peter Thomas Roth. Top opera stars performed arias from the opera Carmen by Bizet, including Stephen Costello, who sings in leading roles at the Metropolitan Opera, and internationally accomplished opera singers Joyce El-Khoury (Soprano), Nathalie Peña Comas (Soprano) and opera star George Gagnidze, who attended as an Honorary guest.

SAMUEL WAXMAN CANCER RESEARCH FOUNDATION

ANNUAL LUNCHEON FEATURING MAX MARA’S SPRING/SUMMER 2023 COLLECTION

The annual Waxman Luncheon, benefiting the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF), took place at AVRA Madison in New York. The luncheon honored Dr. Paul Jarrod Frank for his continued support of the SWCRF mission and passion for scientific advancement, raising more than $165,000. In addition, a live fashion presentation by Max Mara featured their stunning Spring/Summer 2023 Collection. Funds will support crucial SWCRF initiatives such as the International Network on Aging and Cancer Research and the Women’s Cancer Research Program.

The Waxman Luncheon also included a live auction, silent auction, and raffle with specially curated lots featuring generous donations from companies such as Chopard, Movado, Jimmy Choo, Schiaparelli, Fendi, Arlotta Cashmere, and The Baker House 1650. Heritage Auctions were the official auctioneer.

Paul Jarrod Frank, MD, is one of the most renowned cosmetic dermatologists in the world. MYSTX: SETTING THE SOUNDTRACK TO SUMMER

Afamily trio of musicians from Harvard launches an exciting collection of new songs with Indian heritage influence perfectly merged with captivating pop dance sounds. Piqued interest in the cultural phenomena of artistic elements from India is taking the world by storm after the superhit musical number “Naatu Naatu” from the Telugu blockbuster RRR won a historic Oscar for Best Original Song.

Now three musical prodigies named MYSTX are helping revolutionize the industry to soaring new heights with the same inspirational background leading the way. The evolving sounds of the group have already been elevating the minds and spirits of listening ears in the past few years. Their new EP Gap Year is set to transform even further with innovative recent work full of captivating tempos and synchronized tunes.

SUMMER MAGIC

Just in time to create a magical summer in the music world, Gap Year is set to become an instant hit with audiences of all ages. Currently, four songs are out on all streaming platforms and include “Reasons,” “Remember,” “Mystic,” and “Fever.”

The New York City-based pop group is a joyous family affair, including members of 23-year-old twin sisters Riya and Sara along with their 19-year-old percussionist brother Kavi. Their debut EP uses samples from Qawwali legend Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

Composing a pop album around this prolific style has created a compelling mix of dance tracks using instruments and sounds from all over India. Percussive instruments like the ghatam and dumbek are a rarity that produces uncommon beats. They also take equal inspiration from their training in Indian classical dance. Riya and Sara are both professional Bharatnatyam dancers with over a decade of experience. The electrifying qualities formulate gems of listening pleasure that the Western pop world craves.

Having grown up in New York City in an eclectic Indian American household, MYSTX takes innovation from seamless blends of sounds from all over the globe. Their vision is rooted in what has been intuitive since their youth. The trio’s maternal grandmother was also a renowned Carnatic and Hindustani classical singer in her time. As a result, the passion for performance is in their blood and beats as strongly as their connection to Indian melody and rhythm. From their rich heritage comes incredibly danceable sounds that they believe the world is now ready to discover.

“We hope that each of our upcoming EPs, starting with this first one, will take inspiration from countless musical genres in India, including Hindustani, Carnatic, Rajasthani Folk, and Qawwali,” collectively MYSTX states. “We want to proudly showcase just how diverse Indian music is. But, more than that, we want to make music reflecting how naturally these sounds blend into the Western pop world.”

Riya and Sara are juniors at Harvard College, while Kavi is a Harvard Berklee Dual Degree program freshman. Taking time between classes, the trio dedicates their lives to music as equally as studying. Interest in the musicians has already garnered the attention of legendary music producer and songwriter Poo Bear, who helped develop the sounds of Justin Bieber, Mariah Carey, and Usher. As a result, MYSTX has plans to develop more music with the hitmakers.
