Sondag 20 Mei

-Matthew HenryTOTALE DANKOFFERS PER MAAND

I am working with three teams on Genesis. My mom is not well, I think she is ready to go ‘home’, but it makes for a stressful time for me. Pray for peace and grace for all of us.” Liefie Briefie Matthew & Louisa

Dear Friends in Prayer… In the previous “Liefie Briefie” we mentioned that we spent a month waiting on a near-appointment with a South African N.G.O, which fell through, and that this was a very disappointing time. However, in hindsight it has become clear that the purpose of this time was to build a vision in our hearts, for staying in South Africa for a while. We believe our calling is to all people - that’s who Jesus came to save. Our calling to create community, make people feel loved, accepted and welcome, practice hospitality, pray for the sick, and intentionally choose to be the hands and feet of Jesus, remains intact. Thus, whether we are based in our home country or any other country, we will continue to do what God has called us to do. We are very aware that God has given us the ability to connect with Asian and Middle Eastern people very easily, and we have already made several friends from India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran and Turkey these past 2 weeks. We are also praying and looking for an Arabic tutor, as we believe the ability to speak Arabic would aid us in achieving our long term vision of living and working in the Middle East. As we continue striving to introduce people to Jesus, we would appreciate your continuous prayer support. We also plan to continue sending the “Liefie Briefie”. Being in South Africa for this next chapter enables us to build deep connections with friends and family before setting off again in a couple of years - so we ask all of our South African supporters (and non-South Africans passing through) to please come visit us in Johannesburg - we have a lovely

guest room just for you! We hope you sit down as you read this - as you might just be blown away by everything that has taken place in the past month! In our endeavours to go live in the Middle East, a few things became clear. Bear with us as we explain these factors, as it is important to understand what led to the decisions of where we are now. As mentioned in the previous “Liefie Briefie”, our desire to live in the Middle East and be amongst Middle Eastern people has been constant and increasing in intensity these past 7 years. In order to be able to live in the Middle East, there were a few options. Firstly, we could go through a church or with YWAM. However, in order to go long term, we would need a solid funding and financial support base. Considering the economic climate and strength of currency in South Africa, this is unfortunately not very feasible. Secondly, we could go as English Teachers or Matthew as a diving instructor, and we did explore this option. However, the reality is that it does not open doors for other positions in the work we wish to do in future. Also, these kind of contracts are generally for a maximum of 2 years, and we are aware that it would take at least 2 years to get a decent handle on the Arabic language, thus we would prefer to go with the option of a much longer tenure. Thirdly, and our preferred option, is to go and work with an N.G.O. This is the most beneficial as we would earn salaries while are applying our skills and energy to help others, and it’s generally long term. Both of us applied to several positions, but with no success. During these countless tedious application processes it became clear that N.G.O’s in the Middle East only appoint foreigners in higher managerial positions, as they use local people for the more entry level positions. Thus, due to our level of education and experience, no opportunities realized in this sphere. We would like to add here that we know with God anything is possible, and none of the hurdles mentioned above are too big for Him to overcome, however we had to be aware of the realities and trust God to open a door somewhere. The conclusion regarding the requirements for working with an N.G.O in the Middle East led us to make this a long term goal, and start working toward that goal. This in turn led us to start applying for a variety of jobs in South Africa, in an effort to gain more experience and build up our C.V.’s. Soon after we started doing job applications in South Africa, Louisa got asked to attend two interviews in Johannesburg. The first job she got a call for, was a simple one click application for a job that she didn’t really want to do, as it was for a financial assistant, and she didn’t feel this would be a stimulating nor satisfying level of work. However, she felt that it’s good to build up some experience in interviewing, and decided to attend the interview. During the interview, the H.R. department kept on calling more senior people into the room, and Louisa ended up having a long chat with 2 of the directors. During the interview the directors mentioned that Louisa is overqualified for the assistant role, but that they are sure her talents and skills would be an asset for the company, and they do not wish to let her leave the interview without an appointment. They then proceeded to offer her the position of head of the department in which she applied to be an assistant. Only God can orchestrate meetings such as these! We urgently looked for an apartment to rent, as we were still living with Louisa’s parents in Potchefstroom at that point. Many local friends warned us that finding a proper apartment to rent in Johannesburg is hard, and usually takes a couple of weeks. We prayed and trusted in God, and the fourth place that we saw on Friday we fell in love with. God also gave us many signs that this is the place He has for us, and we signed the contract straight away. (Coincidentally, our landlord is an Indian and speaking some Hindi with the family helped ;) On Saturday we went to Potchefstroom to get our few boxes of belongings, and on Sunday we moved into our new place. Monday was Louisa’s first day of work. It has been incredible to see God’s hand in the practical as well - tomorrow marks 2 weeks since we moved into our home, and it’s fully set up and we have everything we need, despite having left most of our furniture in India. God provided through family members’ excess furniture, sales going on and good second hand deals. During the waiting period, God often told us that we should enjoy the rest because once things start happening it was going to be all at once - He was not joking. During that same week Louisa’s MBA commitments also increased, and she was juggling the new job, new house, studies and the excitement of a new adventure. Matthew has been occupied with setting up our home and applying for jobs. We trust God will provide an amazing opportunity for him. We have also found a church where we can see ourselves serving in, learning from and forming a part of, which is a great blessing.
