Ιστορικά ευρήματα μαρτυρούν ότι το Καστέλι, η αρχαία ακρόπολη του νησιού, κατοικήθηκε στη μέση χάλκινη εποχή, ενώ μελέτες αποδεικνύουν ότι οι πρώτοι που κατοίκησαν στο νησί ήταν οι Δωριείς και εν συνεχεία οι Ίωνες. Κατά το 12ο αιώνα, η Πάτμος υπέστη τις συνέπειες από την εισβολή πειρατών, ενώ μετά την Πτώση της Κωνσταντινούπολης δέχτηκε πολλούς πρόσφυγες, που συνέβαλλαν στην ανάπτυξη του οικισμού της Xώρας Πάτμου.
Historical discoveries indicate that Kastelli, the ancient Acropolis of the island, was inhabited in the Middle Bronze Age, while researches prove that the first residents of the island were the Dorians, followed by the Ionians. During the 12th century, Patmos suffered an invasion of pirates and later on, the fall of Constantinople, were a significant number of refugees who contributed to the prosperity of the main town called Chora, were sheltered.
