“From what we get, we can make a living; what we give, however, makes a life.” —Winston Churchill
s I write this it's a breezy night just on the cusp of spring. Small flowers are emerging and we're hitting a temperature of 60 degrees on a regular basis. I’m two shots in on the vaccine and awaiting the opportunity to spend more time outdoors on a bicycle. I would also say that this is some of the best sleeping weather. With the break in the weather coming about, I’m proud to share with you our Shore issue. In this edition, we take you through the natural wonders of our great National Parks as well as a smooth ride in a Genesis G80. And it wouldn’t be a great lifestyle without great food. We talk with the Dougherty’s about the famed Linwood Country Club bringing a family tradition of great hospitality to the mainland. Nick Valinote, Publisher
Although we have seen some crazy things over the last year, we have also seen some amazing generosity and charity emerge from the current situation from many local groups. One of those organizations is Angels in Motion. During my isolated bike rides on the Atlantic City Boardwalk, I was able to witness firsthand the “Angels” handing out food to those left on the streets with little or no support. It’s a great story that takes the pain and transforms it into action. We all take comfort when we have things we can rely on, so for our Health Feature, we introduce you to Comfort Keepers, a company that provides in-home care. Another amazing transformation is the use of QR Codes. I remember there were very few businesses using the QR Code before the pandemic. Now it has become ubiquitous. We have started to incorporate these amazing little symbols to help our customers provide a special offer or landing page. We are using a technology called Dynamic QR Codes that allow us to change the offer even after it has been printed so the QR code can remain the same for a greater period of time with more flexibility. I encourage you to give it a try and see what offers await you! You can also scan my QR Code to download my V card and send me a note to let me know how we are doing. We welcome your collaboration and encourage you to call on our family of advertisers for the best products and services. And be sure to let them know you saw it in New Jersey Lifestyle Magazine.

Beach Please
This summer is all about tie-dye, pastels, and pops of bright color. Here’s your guide to upcoming beachwear trends that you’re going to feel great in. By Danielle Gomes
S
unshine, a soft ocean breeze, and beach days are ahead. Summer is here! The big question is, what are you going to wear? “This summer is all about tiedye, pretty pastels, pops of bright color, peace, and love vibes. I think everyone is still trying to get over last year,” says Cassidy McClain, Buyer for Heritage Surf & Sport and professional surfer. Colors and Prints There’s no question, this has been a long year but things are starting to return to normal. Fashion trends are reflecting this. No more loungewear and subtle styles,

fashion-forward designs are taking the lead. People want to be seen, looking good, again. This is true for both women’s and men’s fashion. “I think everyone is tired of looking at a pile of sweats,” says Kevmo, Buyer for Heritage Surf & Sport. So, if you haven’t jumped on the tie-dye bandwagon yet, just do it. “Tie-dye is huge this summer. We’re seeing cool tie-dye patterns and designs in both women’s and men’s beachwear. It’s just easy to wear and cool,” McClain says. You’ll find tie-dye on almost everything including bathing suits, tees, coverups, beach bags, and more. This makes it effortless to incorporate into

your wardrobe. “The Rip Curl brand is featuring a lot of tie-dyes this summer,” McClain says. Other summer trends to be on the lookout for are pretty pastels from Billabong and bold color suits from Vitamin A with styles such as their sustainable Jadon suit. Get Active One great thing that came out of this past year was an increased interest in outdoor sports. “We saw an explosion of participation. At least triple the normal amount of people began surfing,” says Kevmo. This summer, beachwear trends are both more fashion-forward and geared towards an active lifestyle. Bathing suits are designed to be more functional and there are more board shorts with stretch and elastic-waists. In beachwear, this translates to full capsules of coordinated gear. Look for bright colors and fun patterns that extend from bathing suits to wetsuits. When it comes to wetsuits, there are more styles than ever. Even better, there have been technological advancements in wetsuits that help to not only keep you warm but are also comfortable to wear. So, go ahead and get in the water earlier this year and look fabulous doing it. Just keep in mind, these wetsuits will go fast! “Last year, we had to deal with a major wetsuit shortage,” Kevmo says, “The entire country did, and it was from the supply chain down.” Men’s Gear In men’s wear, the most noticeable trend this season is a shorter inseam. “We started to see a shorter inseam in men’s board shorts a few years ago, but it’s more popular than ever now,” Kevmo says. And again, one of the biggest trends in men’s beachwear is tie-dye and color. “It looks great when you’re tan,” McClain says. Another men’s wear trend is patchwork patterns in board shorts from brands such as Hurley.

Sun Protection Sun protection has gotten a lot more fun. From hats and sunglasses to stylish UV protective beachwear, you can look good while staying safe from the rays. “This summer is all about the bucket hat. It’s back and popular, REALLY POPULAR,” McClain emphasizes. Immensely popular in the ’90s and early 2000s, this style hat is back with a vengeance. From fashion runways to pop icons, everyone seems to be donning a bucket hat. And why not? It’s fun and functional. If you want to stay on trend with eyewear, opt for either aviators or round profiles. “Aviators are always very popular. They look good on everyone. Though,” Kevmo says, “round silhouettes are really strong this year.” Other trends in eyewear include acetate frames and colored lenses. Finally, the coup de grâce in sun protection is UV protective clothing. From shirts to coverups, UV clothing allows you to safely spend more time outdoors. When it comes to choosing UV wear, look for the UPF rating on the tag. The Bag Arguably one of the most essential items you head to the beach with, your beach bag can also be a reflection of your style. From trendy prints to completely utilitarian options, the beach bag is an extension of your lifestyle. If you want to head to the beach with your book, sunscreen, some drinks, and snacks but look good while you’re there; check out Talk of the Walk’s tapestry bag and tie-dye canvas bag. These bags are an extension of your beach wardrobe and complete your look. However, if your needs are more functional, there are plenty of options for you too. Bags like the Rip Curl Surf Series allow you to carry everything

Fashion with Intention “There’s a big movement to be more sustainable,” Kevmo explains. However, this can be misleading. Many companies say that their products are made with sustainable materials, but what they’re doing is creating their own plastic to “recycle” into a sustainable material. “Now, there’s this really strong undercurrent for basics,” Kevmo says. This movement is also referred to as slow fashion. “People are opting for purposedriven products. They’re not buying as much, but they are choosing a higher quality product at higher price points. People, and some companies, are trying to reduce their footprint,” Kevmo says. Vitamin A pioneered the first luxury, sustainable swim fabric and is fully dedicated to bringing ecofriendly, yet fashionable swimwear to the sun-soaked shores. With a variety of styles and fits for every body type, Vitamin A makes it easy to invest in high-quality gear. Items such as their Playa Shirt cover-up are easy to wear and made from biodegradable linen. “Light, loose coverups are very popular. They’re easy, pretty, and comfortable to wear when you’re salty from the ocean,” McClain says. So, what does this mean for beachwear trends this summer? It means you should invest in the suit, coverup, and beach gear that you will want to wear for years to come. If tie-dye and pretty colors are not your thing, then by all means buy the solid black bathing suit. Ultimately, trends are taking a back seat to sustainability. This means that now is your time to be the trendsetter! Commit to the styles that you like and feel good in knowing that you’re making a difference in our environment. n

s American as apple pie, a place to detach from the hectic workday, and yet connect to the world around you; the front porch is enjoying a renaissance. A wellappointed front porch is a lovely extension of the comfort and protection of your living space, while also allowing you to socialize with your neighborhood, community and the outside world. Following the Revolutionary War, the front porch steadily grew in popularity. “Over time, the porch evolved, getting more expansive and becoming an even more functional meeting space. This continued into the 1920s. As our cities and towns grew, porches became a social phenomenon because homes were being constructed so close together,” says Ted Roberts, Industrial Design Manager at Allegion and architectural historian, Schage.com/blog. Their popularity began to wain following WWII and the inclusion of televisions in living rooms and garages for cars. However, the front porch is making a comeback and has been doing so steadily over the past several years. From nostalgia to design aesthetic to a human desire to socially connect, the front porch proves that this American custom is here to stay. “Based on what we’re seeing, it’s not going anywhere. The porch has become a unique space and a showcase for one’s fashion sense and is important to the curb appeal of a home. While it’s not your living room, people are bringing the same design sense to the space,” Roberts says. It’s the first part of the house guests see, yet so often receives the least amount of attention. It can be a tricky space to define. It’s partly an extension of your living space, but also an outdoor threshold that separates your home from the public. Local decorator and owner of Rae Rose Interiors, Anne-Marie Nistico, has step-by-step tips to help you bring style and curb appeal to your front porch while also maintaining its functionality. “When a house has a pretty front porch that’s been nicely decorated, it absolutely adds a welcoming vibe and organic curb appeal, but definitely needs a different approach to décor. Obviously, you need to start by considering the elements and how you want to use the space,” Nistico says. 1) Find the Vibe How do you envision spending time on your porch? “Do you want to sit in a swing or rocker and read a book or sit back and relax with friends on a couch and arm chairs? Are you going to sit outside and drink your morning coffee, or eat lunch? Maybe a table and chairs would be better. Picture the activities you want to do on the porch,” Nistico says. Once you define how you want to use the space, you will know what sort of furniture you will need. “The possibilities are endless but your space and functionality will determine the direction you need to go in,” Nistico says.

2) Define the Space Once you determine how you want to spend your time on your porch, you can figure out the logistics. Does your front porch have the infrastructure to hang a swing? Do you have enough space for the furniture that you want? You want to make sure that there is cohesion and that everything fits together. How will you define the space? You don’t want your furniture to look like it is just floating in an empty space. You want to add elements that pull everything together. An easy way to do this and to define the space is with an outdoor rug. “An outdoor rug can really extend the interior feeling of the home to the porch, creating a very cozy space. It’s also a great way to add personal style, fun colors, and fashionable patterns to the space,” Nistico says. Just be cognizant of the moisture and airflow on your porch. “You want to make sure that the space gets sun and enough air flow to dry out the rug after rain, so that you avoid damage to your porch,” Nistico says. 3) Finishing Touches Even though the front porch is outside, you want to bring the same interior design sensibilities to the area. The space still needs finishing touches. The easiest way to refine the area is with throw pillows, just make sure that they’re for outdoor use. “I love outdoor pillows! They’re so easy to use and bring so much to the space. You can even change them up when you want to add a new pop of color and fresh feel, without spending a lot of money on new furniture,” Nistico says. 4) Bring the Outdoors to the Porch The best part of a front porch is the fact that you’re enjoying the outdoors from the comfort of your

home. To take advantage of this unique, hybrid space, you definitely want to incorporate plants. “There are so many things you can do with the space simply by placing plants,” Nistico says. Plants can bring texture and softness to the space and help you define it even further. “You can use large ceramic pots with oversized ferns or hibiscus on a lattice planter to create a privacy wall, if you need to block off a not-so-great view or traffic. You can also add some color in flower boxes on your railing or hanging plants,” Nistico says. She also recommends framing the front door with potted plants. “I feel like it softens the space and makes your entrance more inviting,” Nistico says. A front porch is an ideal setting to celebrate the seasons. A fun and simple way to celebrate the season is with a wreath. “I think wreaths are very welcoming at any time of year. It’s fun to change them every season or holiday. They add a pretty pop to the front door and are so easy to change that your décor never needs to feel stale,” Nistico says. 5) Have Fun Ultimately, your front porch should reflect your individual style. “Have fun with your front porch! Don’t make it too serious. You can make it a little oasis where you can spend time with your family and neighbors,” says Nistico. With Nistico’s tips, you’ll be enjoying your front porch in no time. Just be careful, the hardest part of the design may be getting your friends and neighbors to leave. n
Anne-Marie Nistico has more than a decade of experience in home decor. She began her career specializing in hard surfaces and branched out to form her own company in 2019. “I love interior décor and helping my clients achieve their dream home,” Nistico says. STREET ANGELS A personal heartbreak becomes life’s work for Lisa Bee. When it comes to helping people battling the disease of addiction, she is a driving force. By Molly Golubcow Photos by Nick Valinote
A
hero does not always wear a cape or possess superhuman powers. Many times, heroes reluctantly find themselves in circumstances and situations that propel them to act in extraordinary ways to help others. Lisa Bee, Executive Director of the Matthew Bee Memorial Fund and Co-Director of Angels in Motion NJ, seems to be able to leap tall buildings at a single bound. When it comes to helping people living on the streets in the Atlantic City area battling addiction, she is their rock. The need to provide help for addicts and their recovery as well as support for their families is something Bee, unfortunately, knows all too well. In 2017, she tragically lost her 21-year-old son to the disease and has been relentlessly helping others to cope with this national tragedy with compassion and
understanding ever since. Bee explains how her quest began, “My personal heartbreak would now become my life’s work. As a result, the Matthew Bee Memorial Fund was founded through a tremendous outpouring of love and generosity from family, friends, and the community.” To date, Bee has helped raise over $300,000 to support individuals and their families providing scholarships for life-saving treatment, sober living, resources, and emotional support. Bee answered the call to help others only a few months after losing Matthew. A friend, Susan Long, introduced Bee to Angels in Motion New Jersey, a remarkable group of volunteers who search the streets for people who need a hand or a shoulder to cry on. Bee eagerly volunteered her time and heart hosting sandwich-making parties at her home and

Bee shares how helping others helped her, “I knew I had found my passion for helping people, and my love for the people we served helped to heal my heart. “ The 2020 COVID year only made those suffering from the disease bear even more than they were already carrying — homelessness, addiction, poverty, and despair surrounded the community. All in all, over 30,000 meals were served in 2020 through the works of Bee and her Angles in Motion Wednesday outreach project. Bee believes consistency serves as the greatest impact for the people she serves on the streets — they know her angels can be counted on no matter what. She explains how she has seen with her own eyes how kindness works and spreads, “I believe we have greatly impacted our community by bringing awareness to the issues of addiction, homelessness, and poverty. I have watched them be the change we want to see in the world.” Currently, Bee works with hundreds of volunteers that make “blessing bags” — a package of kindness containing food, snacks, clothing, hygiene products, and resource information when they are ready to seek help, as well as a note of encouragement. In 2020 alone, 25,000 blessing bags were made and distributed by Bee and her volunteers throughout the community. Bee and her angels fall into the special category of caring people who want to give for the simple sake of just giving. They feel that the people they serve truly give them as much joy as they give them. Bee explains, “Their thankfulness is always spoken, and they greatly appreciate all the blessings they receive and always bless us back with their words of gratitude.” Although Bee is surrounded by 100s of volunteers that tirelessly support her cause, she wishes there was one more angel at her side, “If I could ask any person to walk alongside me while I volunteer, it would be my son Matthew, who is my guardian angel, my love, and my reason for all I do.” n

June Neustadter, a client at Comfort Keepers adores her caregiver Belinda Nortey.
S
outh Jersey resident Toby had been struggling to take care of her 89-year-old husband, who was suffering from a chronic illness. When it all became too much for her, one of her daughters suggested trying Comfort Keepers. They met with her and her husband and developed a care plan that helped her with meal preparation, housekeeping and assisted her husband with everyday tasks such as bathing and dressing. It helped to ease the burden and stress Toby was feeling. She says, “They are like family, such devoted and dedicated people. They care so much about my husband and even care for me too. They have been a Godsend, helping us in ways we never could have imagined. I don’t know where we would be without them.” Toby’s story is just one of the hundreds of clients that Comfort Keepers takes care of in our community. An 86-year-old widow who wants to remain independent in her own home. A daughter who wants some extra care for her parents. A man recovering from knee surgery. These are real-life situations, and when people need help, they want to count on someone who cares. Comfort Keepers strives to improve quality of life by focusing on the core activities that increase engagement, improve physical and mental wellness, and bring happiness, purpose, and hope. Their services focus not only on physical needs but on the total well-being of their clients and their families. As the world’s largest in-home senior services’ company, Comfort Keepers offers a wide array of services such as light housekeeping, meal preparations, prescriptions and medication reminders, transportation, and more. Also, their Certified Home Health Aides can provide personal care such as bathing, toileting, dressing, post-hospital care, as well as dementia and Alzheimer care. I had a chance to learn more about these important services from Kelly Marerro, President of Comfort Keepers in Atlantic county, Cape May county, and Southern Ocean county. NJL: Why did you decide to get involved with Comfort Keepers? Kelly: My grandmother was suffering from TIAs (mini-strokes) for over a year. The family decided to move my nana into an assisted living. On the third day of her stay, she had a massive stroke. No facility member checked on her when she missed breakfast and lunch. By the shift change at 3 p.m., a nurse came into her room and found her lying on the floor. As it was too long a period for intervention, she went on hospice care and passed seven days later. No one should ever be in this terrible situation. Many nursing homes are grossly understaffed. Perhaps if she had a Comfort Keeper, she could have been treated at the onset. It was a turning point for me and shortly thereafter I decided to own my own company. Hence, the goal to keep people safe and in their own homes with dignity and respect.

NJL: What is the goal and mission of Comfort Keepers? Kelly: Our goal is to keep seniors safe at home with dignity and respect avoiding institutional living. All of our Certified Home Health Aides are licensed, bonded and insured and background checked. They work under the direction of a Registered Nurse with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). After her initial assessment, our BSN writes the plan of care for the client. Each day she reviews the caregiver’s progress notes and follows the client from start to finish. We are available 24/7 to keep our clients safe and happy at home!

NJL: How long have you been the owner and president of our local Comfort Keepers? Kelly: We are going on ten years. We started with zero clients and through word of mouth and our hands-on 24/7 approach to caregiving, we have been growing steadily. We are a family-run business and bring on each client with the premise that they are our own. We would not send in a caregiver to your house if we would not use them for our own family. It is a perilous time with COVID, but even before that, we had always strived to give the entire family peace of mind. They need to know we are their extended family caring for their loved ones. NJL: What type of training do your caregivers receive? Kelly: They receive training from a board accredited school. Once they have successfully completed the coursework, they take a written and practical test to receive their license. After
that Comfort Keepers can hire them. We provide online and in-class training on Interactive Caregiving. These classes are taught by our Director of Nursing. They must pass a written and practical test. This is an ongoing certification with a mandatory 40 hours of continual training each year. Also, the Director of Nursing visits each caregiver and client in the field every 60 days to assess. NJL: How many caregivers do you have? Kelly: We have more than 300 certified home health aides in staff, and we are continually growing and training caregivers to meet our high standard of interactive caregiving. NJL: What is the first step for someone who is considering your services? Kelly: Our in-home care services begin with an in-home visit. I personally go to each home and meet each client. We do complete a comprehensive assessment and develop a customized care plan. Some people only need help with household chores now and then. Others might need 24/7 live-in care. We get to know our clients and connect them with the caregiver and plan that best fits their needs. NJL: How has COVID affected your business? Kelly: We have decided to not take any clients who are actively infected with COVID-19. While we have educated our caregivers and have the highest degree of PPE products, we decided it is not worth the risk of infecting caregivers and their families.

HEALTH WATCH We have yet to take a COVID client. This means none of our caregivers are exposed, and they can come to our client’s COVID-free. This is of utmost importance to our clients. NJL: What changes have you made since COVID started? Kelly: We have had training in infectious disease control and actively screen and monitor each caregiver daily for fever and symptoms. If a caregiver has as much as the sniffles, they are quarantined and tested. We follow all CDC guidelines. We likewise continually monitor our clients and their social distancing to protect our caregivers as well. NJL: How big is Comfort Keepers? Kelly: Comfort Keepers brand is owned by Sodexo. We are global with a combination of privately owned and company-owned offices worldwide. NJL: What are the benefits of having a large company behind you? Kelly: We have a professional and practical team of doctors and nurses at our disposal. We have a branded interactive caregiving training as our staff works one on one with our clients.

NJL: How are you different from other home care companies? Kelly: We offer 24/7 live nursing assistance. We are family-owned and operated, and we have skin in the game. Our name is our reputation, and we treat you as if you are a part of our family. Many of our clients stay with us for years at a time. Our staff is the best in the business and our caregivers are highly paid and trained. We have never had a salesperson. We wrap our clients in our arms and service each and every need they have. Our Director of Nursing is their single point of contact.
NJL: Do you have a story about any of your clients that you could share? Kelly: Grace was a 99-year-old Galloway resident who fell and broke her hip. She had no living relatives, and a neighbor took over as her power of attorney. After her hospital stay, she was moved to a local rehab/nursing home. The neighbor wanted to make sure Grace had one-on-one care in the facility, so she hired Comfort Keepers to act as her caregiver within the facility 8 hours a day. A real spitfire, Grace was a sharp, lovely woman who was adopted by all of us. We even arranged a party for her 100th birthday. Unfortunately, Grace outlived her funds. We decided to still care for her pro bono and did so until she passed several months later.
NJL: How does it personally feel to be making a difference in people’s lives through your company? Kelly: It means everything to me. We are truly making a difference in people’s lives. I always keep my grandmother’s memory with me, and it motivates me to make sure that our clients are treated with respect and dignity. n Comfort Keepers provides senior care services with the goal to keep seniors independent in their own homes. AHEAD OF ITS CLASS Delivering a cutting-edge luxury driving experience, the fully redesigned 2021 G80 comes with a wealth of ultramodern technology, intelligent safety, and ambitious design. By Elaine Rose
T
he Genesis G80 isn’t a household name, and prime-time television isn’t chock-full of commercials plugging it. Car aficionados seldom sit around and discuss the wonders of Korean engineering. But if you’re in the market for a mid-size luxury sedan, you should give this baby a look. And a second one. US News & World Report listed the 2021 G80 as its top mid-size luxury car in a field full of names like the Audi A6, the BMW 5 Series, and the MercedesBenz E-Class. “It’s an uphill battle for a newcomer like the G80 to make an impact, but it’s a fight Genesis is winning,” the reviewers wrote. “The G80 offers lively engine performance and a supple ride, plus a spacious and high-end interior, and it does so at a price that none of those rivals can match.” For those unfamiliar, Genesis was introduced in 2009 as a luxury model of Hyundai. It branched out as the Korean automaker’s luxury brand in 2017, in the same way that Lexus is a luxury Toyota and Acura is Honda’s high-end brand. The G80 was redesigned for the 2021 model year. It is assembled at Hyundai’s Ulsan plant in South Korea. Unlike some cars that have a mind-boggling array of trim lines, there are only two trims to the G80. The 2.5T starts at a quite reasonable $47,700 and comes with a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with about 300 horsepower. It gets about 23 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the open road, which isn’t bad for a car that weighs nearly two tons. The 3.5T has a base price of $59,100 and is equipped with a 3.5-liter twinturbocharged V6 with 375 horsepower that gets 19 mpg in town and 27 mpg on the highway. Both come with eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive.

LIFESTYLE ON WHEELS
All-wheel drive is optional for both engines for about an extra three grand. The exterior of the G80 is eye-catching, to say the least. The 2021 version runs wider and lower than its predecessor, with an aggressive look and a much larger grille. Genesis says the rear curves are designed in the style of classic race cars. Sit inside the G80, and you’ll feel pampered like a king or queen. “Every place my hand goes is met with either leather or thick carpeting. Each control … feels better than the last,” Andrew Krok wrote for Roadshow. “The rear bench seat offers oodles of legroom and headroom for passengers, with a deployable center armrest that contains additional controls for the infotainment system and the seats… I’d have no problem relinquishing the controls and soaking up some leather-lined peace in the back seat.” You get the idea. The infotainment system comes with a generous 14.5-inch touchscreen that has a cool 3D effect if you want it. It is compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, though some reviewers suggest using Hyundai’s excellent system on its own. The trunk holds 13.1 cubic feet of stuff, about average for this size car. But the rear seats do not fold down, making it difficult to haul a load for a long road trip. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety have not yet evaluated the G80. But it comes equipped with so many standard safety gizmos that you would have to be an idiot to get into a wreck. These include driver drowsiness monitoring, forward collision warning, pedestrian and cyclist detection, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking. If you want even more creature comforts, two options packages provide a panoramic sunroof, a 21-speaker sound system, heated rear seats, and several additional safety features. One of these is a reminder to check the rear seat when you exit the car to make sure you didn’t leave a child or a pet in the back. It will be appreciated by today’s harried moms and dads. Reviews on the ride itself are mixed. Zach Gale of MotorTrend wrote that his publication’s testers said the ride is stiff and not as smooth as the G80’s German competitors. Colleague Frank Markus agreed, writing that the 2.5T trim is underpowered, has a coarse sound, and shakes on auto-stop restarts. But putting the transmission into sport mode seemed to make the ride smoother. On the other hand, US News & World Report said the G80 is “relaxing and comfortable to drive even on rough road surfaces.” And Krok of RoadShow wrote of his test of the 3.5T that gear shifts are almost imperceptible, and “the whole shebang is smooth as silk, preferring steadiness in its acceleration and deceleration over outright hustle.” You might have to test drive the G80 and decide for yourself. Genesis cars come with an impressive warranty: routine maintenance is covered for three years or 36,000 miles; a limited warranty is good for five years or 60,000 miles, and the powertrain is covered for ten years or 100,000 miles. Plus, Genesis gets high ratings for reliability, meaning you won’t make too many trips to the mechanic. “Whether buyers will be willing to give up the cachet that comes with, say, a three-pointed star on the hood remains to be seen,” Krok concluded his review. “But if someone doesn’t at least put the Genesis up for consideration against these rivals, they’d be doing themselves a disservice.” n

FIELDING WINE QUESTIONS By Michael Bray
Finally, the sun is out! Happy Spring / Summer to you and your family! I hope this finds you in good health and ready for what summer “at the shore” has to offer. In this issue, I answer your questions. For those of you just tuning in, you can find me at, Michael@passionvines.com. I welcome you to email me with any wine-related questions and I will use this column to answer them. While I will not be able to answer them all here, I do promise to always provide an answer via email. Q: Megan B. from Ocean City asks, “I have trouble distinguishing between a sweet wine and a fruity wine? Any tips?” A: Fielding wine questions for the past fourteen years, not to mention being mindful of my own journey, I can relate and attest that this is a profound discovery on your way to understanding wine. I have two answers: first, drink a sweet wine and fruity wine (preferably both white, or both red) next to one another. A side-by-side comparison is the single best educational move you can make. I promise you will have an “aha” moment! Secondly, and scientifically, it is important to understand your tongue and its taste receptors. For instance, did you know that the tip of your tongue is where you will learn if a wine is dry or sweet? On your next sip, give it a try. If you think you struggle with interpreting the difference here (or any other topic for that matter), you’re not alone. Remember, one of the best things about wine is the connection and conversation you have with whomever you’re drinking with. Speak up, ask a question and drink more confidently. Q: Donna R. from Linwood asks “I heard you mention the term “clone” when speaking of Tuscany and specifically Sangiovese. What exactly is a clone?” A: Over many centuries, grape varieties adapt to different

climatic conditions so that they can thrive. As a result, these mutations lead to variants or “clones” of grape varieties. A specific clone could make fruity wines while others are more resistant to fungus, and yet another may be more tannic. Specifically to Sangiovese, the Sangiovese Grosso clone is the one you find in the great wines of Brunello di Montalcino, while the Prugnolo Gentile clone is used in Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Head to the southern coast of Tuscany, and you will find Sangiovese being referred to as Morellino (di Scansano). Each clone has been uniquely developed with time to adapt to unique conditions in the vineyard. Q: Courtney H. from Avalon, “I love Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, CA but struggle to find it for under $30 per bottle. What other regions do you recommend that may deliver a similar profile?” A: Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon indeed carries a lot of clout with consumers and critics alike. Grapes command high prices, the land is not cheap, and as a result, the finished wines are going to cost plenty to buy. If you are looking for an alternative that is a little more budget-friendly, you can look to South America where Chile makes a bright, fruit-forward, aromatic Cabernet Sauvignon that is often lightened ever so slightly with some mouth-watering acidity. Argentina’s Cabernet tends to mirror Napa as far as body and density go, but with a licorice and black pepper finish. Want something that’s got a little more smoke and savory character? Check out a Cabernet from South Africa, which will give you a unique wine-drinking experience.
Q: Michael P. from Strathmere asks, “We’re getting takeout from Pork Island BBQ in Ocean City. What wine would you pair with pulled pork sandwiches and ribs?”
LIFESTYLE WINE
A: Making smoky barbecued pork certainly requires plenty of sweat, coals, wood, and time. In the end, you have a rich, luxurious platter of ribs or pulled pork that will make anyone jealous. If those ribs have some barbecue sauce brushed onto them, consider a bold, plush red wine such as Old Vine Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, or even a blend of the two! Additionally, a Shiraz from Australia is power-packed with dark fruit and savory spice that will be an incredible match with ribs. As for a pulled pork sandwich, accouterments like coleslaw and vinegar are at work here, so the aforementioned Zinfandel and Petite Sirah will overwhelm the sandwich. This is a great opportunity to go with a New World sparkling rosé or even the Italian favorite Lambrusco, where its frothiness helps you digest a loaded sandwich, but provides a foil for the pork and a complement to the condiments. Lastly, we finish with me asking YOU a question. Email me the answer, and I’ll reply with a prize. Q: What is a Super Tuscan wine? Drink Passionately, Formally Shea’s Cafe

T
he Bayshore Heritage Scenic Byway stretches over 120 miles along the southwest coast of New Jersey. Small historic towns centered around the fishing industry and the breathtaking natural beauty of salt marshes inspire landscape painters. Artists would capture the effects of perspective, light, and atmosphere. Often, these paintings were done on location. When measured against the art timeline, outdoor paintings have a relatively short history. It wasn’t until the 19th century that artists began to reject landscape paintings which were primarily idealized and contrived. By turning to nature for inspiration, artists created finished works that captured the essence of the moment. Some artists create studies prior to a finished piece. Outdoor, ‘en plein air’, painting sketches capture the atmosphere and a feeling of the scene in a quick period. Pochade is from the French word poche, meaning pocket, because of their small size. Artists would use these pochades as preliminary studies and for reference. The Impressionists were responsible for the movement of painting outdoors in France

during the 1860s. Familiar names like Monet, Degas, and Renoir rejected the conventions of the academies and based their art on the science of color and light. Today Millville artist, Pat Witt, has continued this tradition drawing inspiration from the Jersey Bayshore. Patricia Vanaman Witt is a lifelong native of Cumberland County on the Delaware Bay in southern New Jersey. Born on February 10, 1927, Pat Witt began studying art in 1937, attending the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and Glassboro State College. Pat has had many one-woman exhibits, as well as been a member of group shows for more than 40 years. Similar to the Impressionist painters, Pat has created a movement in southern New Jersey known as the Maurice River School. Since 1965 Pat has been the ambassador promoting art education at various Bayshore sites. She states “The Maurice River School of Painters is not of bricks and mortar, but in an ethereal sense, likened to the Hudson River School, Brandywine River, Susquehanna River, and Delaware River Schools. Where artists and painters gather to enjoy the regional sights.” For over 60 years Pat has completed many beautiful, finished paintings. Equally inspiring are her pochades. These simple yet mesmerizing quick studies are very direct and responsive to the scene. The immediacy is captured with authenticity and intensity. Pat’s pochades range in size from 5x7 to 8x10 on either canvas or wood panels. As informal studies with minimum brush strokes, Pat’s direct observations can be cataloged into different themes: clouds, marsh,

bay, moons, and weather. The Impressionists would revisit their subject matter through the seasons and different times of the day; Pat is no different. Similar to the artist Monet, Pat’s diverse themes are unified by capturing the moment and the mood created at that point in time. Over the years, Pat’s pochads became a diary recording the everchanging weather. Through these observations of nature, Pat could predict the weather. On the back of many of her pochads, Pat would record the date, time, temperature, and anything else that would connect her painting to a particular day. During a recent visit to the Barn Studio, Pat recalled a story back in the day with a longtime friend and fellow artist/mentor and instructor, Morris Blackburn. On one sunny afternoon, Blackburn brought his students from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts to Burcham Farm to paint. “I need a cloud, the sky is just blue, nothing is happening,” says Blackburn. “Can’t you call up a cloud Pat?” With a quick response, Pat offers a reminder to be patient, and then in due time a cumulus cloud appeared in the sky. Painting outdoors can be challenging, a testament to surviving the elements. It is easy to paint on sunny days with a temperature at 75 degrees, and no humidity or wind. Now imagine painting along the bay at Gandy’s Beach with a 15-mph wind coming off the bay waters at three degrees. Pat’s mantra is that “you have to be

there for the moment.” Her pochads, in some cases, would be a resource for a finished painting, and must not offer a compromise. Pat often states the work needs to be wholesome and authentic. Robert Henri (1865 1929) was an accomplished American painter and instructor. Often Pat would refer to his teachings because Henri adopted the academic technique of making rapid oil sketches or pochades. The following

Artist Patt Witt
quote from Henri’s book, The Art Spirit, offers a deeper appreciation to this practice of pochad painting, “The sketch hunter has delightful days of drifting about among people, in and out of the city, going anywhere, everywhere, stopping as long as he likes — no need to reach any point, moving in any direction following the call of interests. He moves through life as he finds it, not passing negligently the things he loves, but stopping to know them, and to note them down in the shorthand of his sketchbook, a box of oils with a few small panels, the fit of his pocket, or his drawing pad. Like any hunter, he hits or misses. He is looking for what he loves, he tries to capture it. It’s found anywhere, everywhere. Those who are not hunters do not see these things. The hunter is learning to see and to understand — to enjoy. There are memories of days of this sort, of wonderful drifting in and out of the crowd, of seeing and thinking. Where are the sketches that were made? Some of them are in dusty piles, some turned out to be so good they got frames, some became motives for big pictures, which were either better or worse than the sketches, but they, or rather the states of being and understandings we had at the time of doing them all, are sifting through and leaving their impress on our whole work and life.” Painting is about the process, not the finished piece. The pochad binds the artist with nature as it becomes the vehicle for creativity. Pat Witt’s pochads share with the viewer her connection to the south Jersey Bayshore. n

ON PAR WITH LINWOOD COUNTRY CLUB
Pan Roasted Salmon
The Dougherty Family Strives For Excellence Whether you’re craving a casual bite al fresco, or a formal dining experience in the banquet room, Linwood Country Club has transitioned to a premier venue — sans membership. By Molly Golubcow
I
n the past, the coveted Linwood Country Club offered exclusive dining amenities for “members only.” Select individuals could enjoy a meal or a cocktail overlooking the golf course with the Atlantic City skyline as their backdrop. However, the times they are a changing. In the summer of 2020, all food and beverage options at the Club were opened to the public — a dramatic change, to say the least. Whether a casual bite al fresco or formal dining in the banquet room, the Club has transitioned to a premier venue for events and dining — sans membership requirements. Dougherty Vision With 100 successful years of history as a golf course and dining location, the Linwood Country Club enjoyed a long and successful drive, if you will. In 2017, the Dougherty Family, local restaurateurs extraordinaire, brought their proven experience as owners of Dock’s Oyster House, Knife & Fork, and Harry’s Oyster Bar in Atlantic City to their new, offshore endeavor. When it comes to the restaurant business, the Dougherty name carries culinary clout. Elizabeth Pritchard, Marketing & Client Development, explains what motivates the family to make the Club a success, “It is more a vision, belief in the power of the local community, and a willingness to take the risk on a location we see having tremendous potential. We have also been fortunate to assemble a great team to help us achieve that vision.” Since the Dougherty’s took over, the Club has seen a myriad of renovations including a luxurious bridal suite, a remodeled coastal-chic ballroom featuring an ornamental staircase

The Dining Room
leading up to the bridal suite, updated finishes in the banquet room including a movable glass “wall” with a double-sided fireplace, and a dramatic two-story entry into the club from Shore Road. To ensure dining and special events can be held outdoors from March through November, the Dougherty’s installed a 2,400 square-foot sailcloth tent as well. Space includes a fireplace and fire pit overlooking the course. If that is not enough, Pritchard itemizes additional changes coming to the Club in Spring 2021 like expanding the outdoor Fox Den with a new bar, additional seating, a fire pit, and live music. Dining — Inside or Out In addition to changing the look of the club, literally and philosophically, the Dougherty’s have revamped food and beverage options. For example, the main dining room offers upscale dinner selections with an emphasis on steak and seafood, with incredible views of the golf course against the bay and the Atlantic City skyline. Want something more casual? From your high-top table, the main bar offers small plates, salads, and sandwiches as well as all options from the dining room menu. During selected nights throughout the spring, summer, and fall, The Patio, tented and adorned with twinkling lights and a cozy fireplace, bring a steak and seafood menu from the restaurant outdoors. Lastly, located between the 11th tee and the 12th green, The Fox Den offers casual, outdoor dining featuring burgers, hot dogs, and sandwiches, as well as a full bar. This summer, the Fox Den will also offer live music every Friday and Saturday night.
PIZZERIA
Regardless of which venue you select, Pritchard is confident that the Dougherty touch will be present, “Our culinary team created new menus for each of our dining outlets, as well as private events, drawing on their experience at our Atlantic City restaurants as well as Linwood Country Club itself.” Date Night, Girl’s Night, and Then Some Some of the signature dishes from sister restaurants can be found on the Linwood Country Club menu. For example, Joe’s Cheese Pie, a legend at Dock’s for years, makes it a favorite addition to the desserts at the Club. Softshell crabs are also a seasonal favorite found on each of the Dougherty’s menus, including Linwood’s. Favorite entrees unique to the Linwood location consist of Crab and Clam Bucatini, Pan Roasted Salmon, and the 14oz. Prime NY Strip. And, start out with the irresistible house-made Tater Tots — complete with a “secret sauce. Looking for a perfect date night? Start with a drink at the bar along with a shared appetizer — cheese plate or blistered shishito peppers. Then, in the dining room or on The Patio, enjoy the views while selecting from a full menu and wine list. After dinner, sample dessert at your table or move to the fire pit for an afterdinner drink — al fresco. For a girl’s night out, The Fox Den offers live music every Friday and Saturday night. Share appetizers — wings or onion rings, along with one of the specialty cocktails before selecting your entrée, salad, burger, or signature sandwiches like the Lobster Reuben or the Avocado Club Burger. For dessert, the Skrewball Milkshake is a must — Skrewball

peanut butter whiskey, vanilla ice cream, and more. Scenic, Delectable, and Welcoming According to Pritchard, dining at the Linwood Country Club can be described easily in three words: Scenic, Delectable, and Welcoming. From the rolling greens on the course to the twinkling lights of Atlantic City, it is hard to imagine a more lovely place for lunch or dinner. In addition to a great location, the Dougherty’s take pride in crafting their menus — from a simple starter to an elaborate entrée. How does Pritchard sum up the Linwood Country Club of today? “Welcoming. We love being part of this community, and we are proud to welcome everyone to our club. Whether your first time or 50th time, we want you to feel at home here.” n

CRA Financial, L.L.C.
Contributions From IRAs Background The Pension Protection Act of 2006 first allowed taxpayers age 70½ or older to make tax-free charitable donations directly from their IRAs. Technically, these taxpayers were allowed to exclude from gross income otherwise taxable distributions from their IRA (“qualified charitable distributions,” or QCDs), up to $100,000, that was paid directly to a qualified charity. These gifts are also known as “Charitable IRA rollovers.”
when calculating the taxable and nontaxable portion of a distribution from any one IRA. RMDs are calculated separately for each IRA you own, but may be taken from any of your IRAs.) Caution: The gift cannot be made to a private foundation, donor-advised fund, or supporting organization [as described in IRC Section 509(a)(3)]. The gift cannot be made in exchange for a charitable gift annuity or to a charitable remainder trust.
How QCDs work You must be 70½ or older to make QCDs. You direct your IRA trustee to make a distribution directly from your IRA (other than SEP and SIMPLE IRAs) to a qualified charity. The distribution must be one that would otherwise be taxable to you. You can exclude up to $100,000 of QCDs from your gross income each year, thereby avoiding taxation on those amounts. If you file a joint return, your spouse can exclude an additional $100,000 of QCDs. Note: You don’t get to deduct QCDs as a charitable contribution to your federal income tax return — that would be double-dipping. QCDs count toward satisfying any required minimum distributions (RMDs) that you would otherwise have to receive from your IRA, just as if you had received an actual distribution from the plan. However, distributions that you receive from your IRA (including RMDs) that you subsequently transfer to a charity cannot qualify as QCDs. As indicated above, a QCD must be an otherwise taxable distribution from your IRA. If you’ve made nondeductible contributions, then normally each distribution carries with it a pro-rata amount of taxable and nontaxable dollars. However, a special rule applies to QCDs — the pro-rata rule is ignored and your taxable dollars are treated as distributed first. (If you have multiple IRAs, they are aggregated
Why are QCDs important? Without this special rule, taking a distribution from your IRA and donating the proceeds to a charity would be a bit more cumbersome, and possibly more expensive. You would need to request a distribution from the IRA, and then contribute to the charity. You’d receive a corresponding income tax deduction for the charitable contribution if you choose to itemize. But the additional tax from the distribution may be more than the charitable deduction, due to the limits that apply to charitable contributions under Internal Revenue Code Section 170. QCDs avoid all this, by providing an exclusion from income for the amount paid directly from your IRA to the charity — you don’t report the IRA distribution in your gross income, and you don’t take a deduction for the QCD. The exclusion from gross income for QCDs also provides a tax-effective way for taxpayers who do not itemize deductions to make charitable contributions.
