[ cover Image Inspiration: texture ] Our cover shoot entitled TEXTUREE was inspired by the ruffles, lace and tulle of bridal gowns, in particular the skirt. How it moves. How it reflects in the light. The story it tells. The beauty it conveys. Most importantly, how it transfers a woman into “The Bride” the moment she slips it on.

The latest seasons’ bridal gowns includes copious textured bell skirts with stunning embellished bodices, such as intricate beading or multilayered ruching. This era of gowns contains such stately elegance unseen since the Golden Age of Parisian Haute couture. What a delightful time to select a bridal gown. We would like to thank our amazingly talented friends and colleagues for their enthusiasm in helping us convey our highly ambitious, perhaps slightly lofty concept of using “textures” to tell a visual story. Stacey Asaro, (cover girl ) and Lauren Siegel our beautiful models. Heather Burnam and Ashley Malek with Flawless Bride for their unique artistic sensibilities. As always, it was a joy working with you. Last but never least, our generous bridal salons: Pearl’s Place, Bridal Boutique by Maeme and Bustles and Bows Bridal Boutique.

[ letter from the editor ] E

verybody loves to eat, especially here in arguably the food capital of the world, New Orleans, Louisiana. It has been said that the two most important elements of a wedding are the food and the music. If you can feed them and entertain them, you have the makings of a successful wedding reception. In this issue, we have done some intensive and fattening research to come up with the best food choices for your wedding. Every venue has a few signature dishes that simply cannot be overlooked. We are happy to present them to you. Even if you are using a particular venue that does not feature the dishes featured in our article, perhaps your venue can do a version of it for you to sample. Bon Appetite! We interviewed some local grooms to get their takes on their weddings. It was cool to see the differences in their approaches to getting married. These days, the grooms are often the forgotten men in the whole wedding experience. They are sometimes simply required to show up on time at the church and be sober. It is refreshing to see that some of the grooms that we interviewed took an active role in their wedding planning process and were very happy to do it. It allowed them the opportunity to work with their brides to be on making decisions that would affect both of them on their wedding day. When the day

was over, the culmination of their planning together led to a more enriching experience for the couple. We hope you enjoy it. Also for the groom is a very cool photo editorial that features very unique and contemporary cufflinks. Available at John’s Tuxedos and Rome’s Tuxedos, these cufflinks will surely inspire conversation and add a twist to your wedding day attire. We hope that you enjoy our fall issue. As always, we hope to inspire and aid you in your wedding planning as well as introduce you to the best of the best in our city’s wedding vendors. Part of our mission statement is to raise the quality of weddings in our area and to provide local brides with all of the tools that they will need to have their dream weddings. If we can be of assistance to any of you, do not hesitate to call us at the office, 504.469.7141. We would love to help! We encourage you to visit our facebook page facebook.com/nolaweddingguide as well as our website: nolaweddingguide.com Happy Wedding Planning! God Bless,

[ wise bride ]

“Wise Bride” will be a recurring feature in the NOLA Wedding Guide, and includes helpful tips and advice from our “Wise Bride.”

Q: How do you word your invites when stepparents are involved? Brandy Bartholomew, Crown Point LA. Wise Bride: This is a great question! There are a couple of different ways to go about the wording on your invitations depending on your stepparents’ current marital status, and how you personally feel about adding their names. Traditionally, only the parents’ names appear on the invitation. However, if you would like to include your stepparents try this: Mr. and Mrs. David Edward Smith Mr. and Mrs. John Andrew Jackson Request the honor of your presence at the marriage of their daughter First Middle Last

parent/child rather than sibling, that would be more acceptable. Q: My wedding is taking place in Florida but we live here. Are you supposed to ask your guests to pay their own way? Crista Sawyers, New Orleans, LA Wise Bride: Destination weddings do not require you to pay for your guests. However, procuring hotel rooms at block rates not only saves out of town guests’ money, but also puts them all in one place. This makes arranging transportation for them much easier. Be sure to give them a complete timeline of your wedding events and map of the area. Also, a small gift left in each of their rooms is a very thoughtful and appreciative gesture.

Be sure to include your first, middle, and last name. Q: Do you list where you are registered on your invites? Veda Gondol, Covington, LA Wise Bride: Absolutely not! No information regarding gifts or your registry should be listed on the invitation. This sends the message that the gift is more important than the actual guest. Telling your parents, bridal party, family, and close friends where you registered can help get the message out amongst your guests. What are the groom’s parents supposed to pay for? Maddie Meyers, New Orleans, LA Wise Bride: Over the years, the groom’s parent’s financial contribution to weddings has changed. Traditionally, the groom’s parents pay for: officiant, marriage license, flowers for the bridal party, groomsmen’s gifts, and the reception band or DJ. In today’s economy, you often find the two families dividing the cost, or choosing/volunteering what they would like to pay for. Depending on their financial situation, the couple will often pitch in as well especially if it is for something they both really want. Q: My fiancé and I have no living parents, would it be okay for me to ask my siblings to help pay for my wedding? Jamie Dunkin, Gretna, LA Wise Bride: Generally speaking, no, but it really depends on your relationship with them. Asking your siblings to stand in for your parents, financially, is not proper. However, if your relationship defines

[ featured couple ]

Holly Messa and Reed Tribou Holly Messa and Reed Tribou are to be wed on Saturday, August 18, 2012 at St. Anthony of Padua Church in New Orleans. Holly is originally from Chalmette, La and attended Archbishop Hannan High School. She is currently an event planner, photographer, and marketing consultant. She is also a former Saintsation. Reed attended Mandeville High School and is a pumper with IMTT Oil Company and a resident DJ at Ampersands in New Orleans. We asked them about their upcoming nuptials from how they met to how the planning has gone so far. We would like to share their story.

We texted whole paragraphs back and forth and I thought he was very funny. I felt like I knew so much about him before our official first date. NWG: Describe your first date. Holly: Reed’s friend from LA, the well-known DJ Charles Feelgood, was playing that night, so Reed took me to our now favorite restaurant and then to see the DJ. We talked the entire night, and we have been inseparable ever since. NWG: Describe your courtship after the first date. Holly: Well, we continued dating and then started working together on events such as Sounds of Style and various fashion shows. We also had a son, Dhax Ledger, who is now 3 years old. NWG: How did he propose? Reed: It was Christmas 2011, and it’s Holly’s favorite time of year since her birthday is in December and her name is Holly. She says it’s her “time to shine”. I planned on bringing Holly and both of our families to Miracle on Fulton Street. I gave the ring to my brother and told him to give it to the Santa Claus that would be there. I had planned that when we would go to sit on Santa’s lap to take a family picture, Santa would ask me, “What do you want for Christmas” and I would then reply; “I want to marry Holly”. Well, that was the plan. Due to the construction of a nearby restaurant, they didn’t have Santa and his reindeer that night. My brother called me an hour before everyone was to arrive to tell me. I was so angry and upset.

NWG: How did you meet? Holly: We met in the end of 2007. I was a managing partner for a live music venue and I heard him DJ before. I thought he was cute and very good, and so I contacted him to DJ at my venue. I really loved the type of music he played. He knew my best friend and now maid of honor, Courtney. The night after the gig, we met up and hung out all night. We spent the entire next day together in the French Quarter. He had to go DJ in Miami soon after, but we continued to text.

12

nola wedding guide

w w w .n ol a we ddin g g u ide . c o m

Holly: Reed said that we were going there under the pretense that it was a family get-together for Reed’s brother’s birthday. After the phone call about Santa, Reed seemed unusually mad that Santa wasn’t going to be there. He was very antsy, and agitated. Reed: I went to “plan B” which was to ask her while we were taking pictures of the three of us in front of the jazz statues on Fulton Steet. I gave Dhax the ring box and we opened it up to Holly. She cried and our families took many pictures of the event. NWG: How has wedding planning gone so far? Holly: Fun! I am an event planner, so I’m used to it. I’m also helping to plan my cousin’s wedding. I am even looking to get into the wedding planning industry. At first, it was stressful trying to coordinate the venues and vendors that we wanted on the same date and times. Reed is picking out the tuxes, getting limos, planning the rehearsal dinner, and getting addresses together for the invites. Reed has also become Catholic for me, so that we could be married in the church with a full mass. My maid of honor, and my mom and his mom have helped a lot as well. We are having a vintage theme to the wedding. We are going to have an “Our Favorite Things” buffet with CDs of our favorite songs (Reed’s going to make them), sweets that we love, and our son’s favorite candies.

NWG: Tell us about some of your vendors. Holly: We are going with Dyle Films as our videographer. Both my dress and my bridesmaids’ dresses are from Pearl’s Place. NWG: Any advice for future couples? Holly: Don’t think that you have to be traditional if you don’t want to. Make your day about you. Bring out your own personality.

[ top west bank wedding venues ] H

ere at NOLA Wedding Guide, we strive to keep you informed about the latest happenings in all things wedding related. In recent issues, we have given you the scoop on all of the top wedding venues in the French Quarter and on the East Bank. Now, we bring you the best of the best on the West Bank. From ambiance and outstanding service to ample parking and beautifully kept gardens, the following venues stand out in their commitment to make your big day a dream come true. We are more than happy to share them with you.

perfect setting for an outdoor wedding—rain or shine. It seats 200 guests and has fans and heaters to accommodate for varying temperatures. It is beautifully decorated with a garden theme and music can be played through the outdoor speakers. With 7.5 acres, the guest parking is endless and there are friendly parking attendants to direct and assist with questions or concerns.

Cedar Grove Tchoupitoulas Plantation Built in 1790, Cedar Grove Tchoupitoulas Plantation has a long history of grand events. The original home is 222 years old and remains the oldest building in Jefferson Parish. The breathtaking grounds span 7.5 acres lined with 400-year-old trees along the River Road access to the plantation. Tchoupitoulas Restaurant was housed in the plantation for 40 years before closing in 1993. In 2006, the Mercer family bought and renovated the plantation and grounds. They wanted to make it one of the most stunning ceremony and reception venues around town. Upon entering the home, one is taken by the plankwood floors along with chandeliers, which gracefully hang from the ceiling. But the real surprise comes when guests walk to the back of the house and see the massive size of the plantation, along with the additions that have been made by the Mercers. The ballroom and buffet room gracefully add to the original house, however, it’s the outdoor pavilion that is truly the grand masterpiece. This massive structure, which connects to the main building, resembles a historic church with no walls. The pavilion provides the

What adds to the historic home and grounds is the commitment to excellence in the execution of every event. Every server is carefully trained in what is called “The Mercer Way;” which is with grace, patience, and a happy demeanor. Every item that is served has been carefully selected to guarantee quality. The bride and groom are even allowed to choose their own personalized menu. The owners of Cedar Grove are emphatic that this is a family business. Jill and Joey Mercer along with their seven children (five who work at the plantation) make sure that their clients are happy. It is more than a business to them. They form relationships with the families that they work with and encourage them to become part of the plantation’s history as it becomes part of theirs. The Mercer’s slogan truly sums it all up, “There’s Something About This Place!” Celebrations Right off of General De Gaulle Drive you will find Celebrations. Once you step into the beautifully decorated foyer, you realize why this is one of the best West Bank venues. Celebrations has been a ceremony and reception venue for 14 years. Charlene Dauterive and her staff deliver a welcoming atmosphere upon arrival. Their allinclusive package provides a detail-oriented staff and

a local menu like no other. The majority of the food is cooked from scratch using recipes that are generations old. Charlene says they prepare home cooked food like her grandparents did.

you have an amazing setting. Three large parking lots make parking very easy for all guests no matter the event size. English Turn was recently written about in Club and Resort Magazine for the excellence of their entire food and beverage operation. One of their featured dishes is BBQ Shrimp that is served on their member’s menu, and most of their banquet menus. Another fun thing they like to do is a seafood boat. It can include anything and everything from boiled shrimp, fresh-shucked oysters, mussels, snow crab and Dungeness crab legs and lobster. The best part is its served in a large pirogue boat

The spacious building can accommodate up to 225 guests comfortably. The delicate chandeliers bring eloquence and intimacy to the grand room. The expansive white and black marble floor matches virtually any theme and also provides a huge dance floor. There are plenty of parking spaces around the building, and an extra lot on the right-hand side to accommodate any overflow of guests. The staff takes pride in what they do and their loyal customers are a true testament to that. They truly feel connected to their brides and grooms and strive to meet their every need. They love taking part in the special moments of their couples’ lives before, during and after the wedding. English Turn Country Club This year marks 25th anniversary of English Turn and pure elegance is and has been the order of the day since the beginning. They are able to accommodate 500600 guests cocktail style, and 290 guests for sit-down dinners in their grand ballroom alone, without using the dance floor space. They can accommodate 350 guests using the dance floor space. With five other rooms besides the grand ballroom on the property, they can accommodate any size event. Their events start at a minimum of 25 guests for corporate meetings and showers, etc. English Turn is adamant that tremendous personal service be given to all of their clients. They are open to the public for events, not just their members. They want the entire New Orleans community to know that English Turn welcomes everyone. Helping their clients with every aspect of their event and exceeding expectations is the main reason they have been successful for the last quarter of a century. Indoor and outdoor ceremonies can be held at English Turn. The outdoor space is next to the lagoon where the beautiful swans swim, and it also overlooks the 18th green of their Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course. The indoor space over looks the same view, so either way,

It is hard to beat English Turn because of their overall excellence in every area. They have a tremendous staff, great food, an elegant ballroom, and a willingness to please. English Turn has consistently delivered amazing events for the past 25 years. Royal Palm

Royal Palm has been in business now for 4 years and takes pride in providing brides with the best service possible. With lush gardens, soaring fountains and impeccable scenery this is no ordinary reception hall. All of their indoor banquet rooms have an outstanding view of their state of the art fountain park.

nating services for each event. They also make a special “bride’s drink” that incorporates the theme and colors of the event.

The large banquet rooms have gorgeous wrap-around verandas and patios, which offset the rooms and provide more space to accommodate a larger number of guests. Royal Palm is able to host both indoors and outdoors ceremonies with the latter having a beautiful view of the fountain park. Royal Palm can accommodate events from 30-1200 guests, and has an ample amount of parking directly outside of the venue. The décor of Royal Palm provides a luxurious ambiance with ivory, old gold and deep brick tones, as well as a duo of both marble and hardwood floors throughout. The Venetian statues, large gold columns, and crystal chandeliers provide a European feel and give off a romantic vibe. The marble fireplaces accompanied by lavish greenery provide a rich backdrop for photos, that will remind their clients Royal Palm was where their happily ever after began. Taravella Manor Taravella Manor is a family owned venue that was built in 2004. It was passed down to Kyle P. Winkler II and is currently operated by Kyle and his two brothers. Their family has been in the reception business since 1999. Kyle studied Hospitality at the University of New Orleans and has been professionally coordinating weddings and social events for over 12 years. The décor of the venue reflects the ambiance of a traditional Southern manor, but with contemporary innovations. The manor can accommodate up to 300 guests and allow all of them room to dance on its spacious 900 square-foot dance floor. There is ample parking with over 1.5 acres available directly in front of the venue.

Outside catering services are also offered through Taravella Manor’s sister company, NOLA Wine Creations Catering. Kyle furthered his formal study of wine in Napa Valley, California. He then passed the Certified Specialist of Wine exam, becoming a C.S.W. He used this knowledge, and experience in the reception venue to create a unique catering experience, pairing wine and food seamlessly. They also offer wine tastings at the manor for a bridal shower or bachelor/ bachelorette party. The Winkler family believes the values of honesty and integrity are essential reasons that Taravella Manor has become a prominent venue. They have a proven reputation for offering only the highest level of quality and delivering it flawlessly. The Four Columns The Four Columns has been a West Bank staple for over 36 years. Generations of brides have held their reception at The Four Columns because of their consistency and attention to detail. The capacity for the venue is 1500 guests. There is also an ample amount of free parking readily available in their parking lot. The décor at The Four Columns is very lovely with two very elegant staircases leading up to a beautiful balcony. Couples will usually take their photos on the balcony, and then descend as royalty when they are introduced as husband and wife.

Ceremonies take place in the picturesque garden in the back of the manor. Brides and grooms exchange their vows under a vine rich arbor in front of a tranquil fountain. The celebration then moves inside where there is an abundance of delectable food. The menu is prepared on site with only the freshest ingredients. Taravella Manor offers complete professional coordi-

[ wedding tales ]

Mia Wirth and Adam Manguno

M

ia Wirth and Adam Manguno met in college in Iowa, Mia’s home state, while watching a live band. She introduced herself to him and they ended up talking all night. She says that his Southern charm won her over.

They dated only briefly in college just before graduating and then went their separate ways: Mia to Florida, and Adam back home to New Orleans. They started dating again about a year later, but it was long distance. Mia eventually moved to New Orleans so they could be closer, and fell even more in love with Adam and the city. Adam originally planned to propose at their favorite tree in Audubon Park, but it rained the day before and he couldn’t convince Mia to take their dog, Moose, to the park for a walk. Instead, he told her to look outside to see how sad Moose was, and she noticed Moose had something in his mouth. Before Mia realized it was a jewelry box, Adam was down on his knee asking her to marry him. They celebrated that evening at the Endymion Extravaganza, which Mia says was a perfect way to celebrate with all of their friends.

28

nola wedding guide

Mia and Adam both being very laid back yet organized people, they chose vendors they felt would be able to closely work with them during the planning process and also ones with a good reputation. They chose Atelier NOLA Photography to capture every detail of their big day. They also went with Alert Transportation for transportation of the wedding party. Adam decided to use John’s Tuxedos for his and his groomsmen’s tuxes. The high level of professionalism they experienced from these vendors is unmatched, and they highly recommend them for their easy going and understanding attitudes. Mia’s mom lives in Iowa, but was able to come to New Orleans several times to help her plan. Dress shopping with her mom was all she ever imagined it to be and one of the most fun parts of getting engaged. She eventually decided on a beautiful dress from Town & Country Bridal. Unfortunately, all of Mia’s bridesmaids live out of state, but they were always just a phone call away to give their opinion, listen to her vent, or share in her excitement. The professionals at Town & Country were such a great help and were ready to alleviate any of her concerns. Mia says, “All my girls coming to Nola for the wedding made our day even more special as it’s always a treat to see them!”

I know it’s so cliché, but just enjoy it! Everything will be amazing no matter what so take a deep breath and enjoy it with your fiancé, family, and friends because it’ll all be over so quickly. Even if something doesn’t go exactly as planned, at the end of the day you married your love and that’s the most important thing.

Mia and Adam wed on March 24, 2012. Mia fell in love with a rustic, shabby chic style theme for the wedding. When they looked at the venue, they felt that the brick walls and wood floors would be perfect to create this sort of theme. Mia used a lot of lace in the decorations and invitations to match her dress, and burlap with wood crates to create a rustic feel. She chose soft, pastel colors for flowers to accent the bridesmaids’ tiffany blue dresses. They had a sweets table with a “Love is Sweet” sign, and their favors were mini Tony’s Cacherie’s seasonings with tags that read, “Love is Spicy” in order to incorporate New Orleans into the theme. Mia’s advice to brides is, “I know it’s so cliché, but just enjoy it! Everything will be amazing no matter what so take a deep breath and enjoy it with your fiancé, family, and friends because it’ll all be over so quickly. Even if something doesn’t go exactly as planned, at the end of the day you married your love and that’s the most important thing.” She continues, “I thought wedding planning would be more stressful, but I really had fun! From cake tasting, to learning about flowers, to couple retreats, to scouring websites looking for the easy and cute DIY projects—I really had a blast and even kind of miss it already.”

Ashley Reine and Benjamin Sellars

Ashley Reine and Benjamin Sellars both attended St. Charles Catholic High School in LaPlace, and Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond without knowing each other very well. In the summer of 2007, they both moved home for summer break from college. Ashley was working part-time at a bank and Ben was working for his family’s company. He would go to the bank where Ashley worked every Friday to cash his check. He eventually asked her out on a lunch date. Ben took Ashley to a local wings restaurant, and then asked her to go to dinner with him that Friday night. She accepted the date and they began dating regularly. When the school semester resumed, they continued to see each other. Ashley and Ben went to Las Vegas with Ben’s parents, his sister and her husband. On the second night of their vacation, Ben booked a table in the VIP of the nightclub, “Bank,” inside the Bellagio Casino. Ben arranged for a bottle of Cristal to be delivered to the table, accompanied with fireworks. After toasting to a wonderful Vegas vacation, Ben got down on one knee and

asked Ashley to marry him. She said yes and cried many happy tears. They celebrated the proposal by partying all night. Ashley and Ben wed on St Patrick’s Day, March 17, 2012. Ashley wanted an outdoor wedding and when she saw the garden at the Champagne Palace she was sold. The landscaping was impeccable and the setup was very intimate. Ashley said that Chris, the coordinator at Champagne Palace, helped plan the entire night. He made the whole process as stress free as possible. On the night of the wedding, Ashley and Ben were very impressed with the organization and attentiveness of the staff, and the quality of the food. The entire staff helped make the wedding both incredible and unforgettable. Ashley said that Stacy Marks Photography was a pleasure to work with. She says, “I felt like we had known each other forever when we met for the first time. That was very important to me because it really made Ben and I feel comfortable.” As for his work, he completely surpassed their expectations. “The engagement

Enjoy every second of the engagement, planning, and parties because it’s over before you know it. And most importantly, don’t stress over minor details. session photos came out beautiful, all 300 of them. The wedding photos are absolutely amazing. I received 1000+ pictures about two days after arriving home from the honeymoon. I had a wonderful experience with Stacy and would recommend him to anyone.” Ashley chose The Cocoa Bean Bakery to provide the cakes because when Ashley sat down with the owner, Anthony, she was very impressed with his artistic ability. As she was describing what she had in mind, he was drawing exactly what she was thinking. She gave him free reign to be creative and put his own flare into the cakes. She adds, “It was so exciting for me because I was able to be surprised by the cakes on the night of the wedding. Not only were the cakes beautiful, they were by far the most delicious wedding cakes I have Venue: The Champagne Palace ever tasted.” Photography: Stacy Marks Photography Ashley and Ben also had positive reviews for A Regal Cakes: The Cocoa Bean Bakery Limousine, who provided transportation. Ashley says Transportation: A Regal Limousine that they arrived on time and got them to the venue early despite the heavy traffic in the French Quarter, due to the St. Patrick’s Day parade. www. n o la we ddin g g u ide . c o m

Tiffany Dunson and Jason Theriot

T

iffany Dunson and Jason Theriot were friends in Salmen High School in Slidell, La. But did not start dating until they were in college. That is when she and Jason reconnected and quickly found that they had a connection. In the beginning of their courtship Jason would always invite Tiffany over and cook her dinner, invite her to go swimming, or anything else just to spend time with her. After a short time of dating, they both knew that this was something completely different than anything they had ever experienced and that it was going to last. On May 21st, two years after they started dating and on his father’s birthday, Tim popped the big question. Tim planned to take Tiffany on a boating trip to the lake. Earlier that day, he secretly asked Tiffany’s father for her hand in marriage. While on the boat he knelt down to reach into a compartment then turned around on one knee and asked her to marry him. Afterwards, pulling out the hidden champagne glasses and champagne bottle. They shared the champagne on the way to his parents’ house. Upon their return, his parents and friends were standing outside all excited waiting to hear their big news. Most of Tiffany’s ideas came from NOLA Wedding Guide and Pintrest. Tiffany is a natural planner and developed

48

many of the ideas herself, but before making final decisions she would discuss them with Jason. Jason did have one big must have, Hubig’s pies as a wedding favor. Tiffany and Jason wanted a fun, non-traditional rehearsal dinner. They chose Rock ‘n Bowl and had the time of their lives. The wedding party took a party bus from Slidell to the venue for the actual rehearsal then on to Rock ‘n Bowl. The entire group bowled, had an open bar, and had a buffet style of appetizer type foods. Tiffany says, “It was social and so much fun! The staff was great and had everything ready for us when we got there; they took care of us the entire time.” Both wanted an authentic New Orleans wedding. The Riverview Room was the first and the only place they checked out. The staff was incredible, the views were breathtaking and the food was excellent. From day one Mary, the Riverview Room coordinator was there for them. She helped Tiffany through the entire planning process. Tiffany chose Stacy Marks Photography saying that he is “the best photographer EVER!” Tiffany absolutely loved her pictures and her wedding album. Tiffany added, “I booked Stacy as my first vendor while attending a bridal show and everything else was booked around the dates he was available. Pictures were the most important things to me

On the day of the wedding, relax and enjoy the whole bridal day events leading up to the actual wedding. All of your hard work is done and now it’s time to enjoy.

because I wanted all of the moments captured and kept for life. Stacy has such a unique eye and I loved working with him. He captured candid moments that will be the memories I can hold on to forever! Stacy’s work is extraordinary and surprisingly affordable.” Tiffany knew she wanted an ivory, fitted and strapless wedding gown and with the help of Dina at Linda Lee, found the perfect one. She found her purple, strapless, bridesmaids’ dresses at Pearl’s Place. She loved the enthusiastic staff at Pearl’s Place. The theme for the wedding was purple, black and silver with orange for a pop of bright color. Tiffany, had seen a spread from Les Deux Soeurs in NOLA Wedding Guide and it was exactly what she was looking for. She loved the creativity of the floral arrangements that she saw in the magazine. Christine met with me and she just knew exactly what I was going for. The arrangements, bouquets, and boutonnieres all came out amazing! Tiffany and Jason chose Troy Marks and No Idea to entertain their guests. When inquiring about the band, she spoke with Jesse, she and felt confident that they were going to be the perfect choice. She was right! Troy Marks and No Idea kept everyone dancing and singing the entire night.

There was never a dull moment or an empty dance floor. They are very interactive with the crowd and even made the traditional garter and bouquet toss fun! Tiffany and Jason’s advice to engaged couples, “Relax and enjoy the whole bridal day events leading up to the actual wedding. All of your hard work is done and now it’s time to enjoy. Never underestimate the time you have to plan because the months leading up to the wedding go by so quick. Don’t let people or stress get you down leading up to the wedding. This is your special day and it took months of planning, so make sure to have fun. Make it all about you and the love of your life.” Rehearsal Party: Rock ‘n Bowl Venue: Riverview Room Photography: Stacy Marks Photography Bridesmaids Dresses: Pearl’s Place Gown: Linda Lee Bridal Transportation: Alert Transportation Flowers: Les Deux Soeurs Music: Troy Marks and No Idea Favors: Hubig’s Pies

Lydia Stevens and Joseph Vazquez

Lydia Stevens and Joseph Vazquez met while attending school at Blue Cliff College, training to become massage therapists. Joe was in the class ahead of Lydia and unbeknown to her, had a big crush on her for almost a year before asking her out on a date. That night, they laughed as though they had a connection for years. Being together just felt right. They were inseparable from that point on.

together. The dress, veil, accessories, and shoes all came from Bustles and Bows Bridal Boutique. “They were truly a pleasure to work with,” says Lydia, “Shelly and her staff, made me feel very special. “

Lydia and Joe went to Panama City Beach, Florida, for an NPC Bikini Competition in which she competed. While on a walk on the beach, he got down on one knee, pulled a beautiful diamond ring out of his pocket and asked her to marry him. She threw her arms around his neck, sat on his knee, and with tears in her eyes and a big smile, replied, “Yes.”

Joe is very particular when it comes to his attire. He knows what he wants and he doesn’t settle for less than perfect. At John’s Tuxedos he found just the right look and they tailored it to fit him perfectly. His groomsmen also got their tuxedos at John’s.

Both Lydia’s mom and Joe’s mom shared in the excitement of planning. His mom flew into town and Lydia’s drove from Baton Rouge so that they could all go dress shopping

54

The bridesmaids’ dresses came from Pearl’s Place. Her bridesmaids were met with a high level of professionalism by all the staff at Pearl’s Place.

Lydia and Joe got married at Southern Oaks Plantation. “The place is phenomenal! They are extremely organized and on top of every little detail. Mr. Bobby and Mrs. Sue truly want you to have the best experience possible and are just as happy for you as if they were family.”

w w w .n ol a we ddin g g u ide . c o m

The best piece of advice that I am most grateful for and would like to pass down is when it’s time to walk down the aisle be sure to lock eyes with your man. At that point, nothing and no one else matters. Just the two of you in that place is all that counts. Joe and I shared these intimate moments as my Dad walked me down the aisle and as I was standing at the altar even with 200 people watching. It was so special.

Nonney and Ole of Atelier NOLA were the wedding photographers. For years Lydia had followed their work and just knew that they would be a perfect fit. She added, “I love their style of photography, but the thing I love the most is the way they are able to capture the emotion of the moment in a photograph. Not many people can do that. They were easy to work with and we are both very pleased with their photos.” They decided to use Celebrity Limo for transportation. The limousine driver was punctual and extremely friendly. He even gave the couple a complimentary ride from the reception to their hotel. The cakes were very important to Joe and Lydia. After many tastings, Gambino’s Bakery was their choice. “It’s what a cake is supposed to taste like!” The wedding cake was a four-tiered almond flavored cake decorated with fresh red roses. For the groom’s cake, Joe wanted it to looked like the shield on the front of Voltron. Again, it was no problem for Gambino’s to recreate it.

Hot Bridal Accessories for 2012 T his year we have seen multiple trends come and go in regards to bridal accessories, but it seems some of them are here to stay. In planning their wedding, brides usually spend most of their time searching for the perfect wedding dress. Each bride’s dress should be unique and while the dress is and should be a main focus, the best way to complete your look is to form an entire ensemble. Accessorizing can make all the difference. Let’s take it from the top ladies. We spoke to professionals from two local bridal boutiques: Pearl’s Place and The Bridal Boutique by Mae Me, they gave us the inside scoop on what’s popular for 2012.

Atelier NOLA photography

Birdcage veils and Embellished combs Hairpieces are all the rage this season because of the versatility and personalization they offer each bride. First and foremost, embellished combs, headbands and birdcage veils are by far the crown choices for classic to modern contemporary brides. The birdcage veil allows a modern bride more mobility than a longer veil, but at the same time offers a vintage look. Melissa

and Mandy, owners at The Bridal Boutique by Mae Me shared, “Accessories should highlight the main feature –the gown! We usually ask the bride to describe her overall look or theme, and take it from there. Whether the bride is going for traditional and classic, natural and earthy, or modern and trendy, we have accessories to accommodate all looks.” Embellished combs and headbands are versatile and can be used with all types of hair from short and curly to long and straight. By combining a beautiful comb with a simple headband, you may create your very own headpiece. This style is becoming increasingly popular and as a result brides are able to show their individual flare beyond just the dress. Statement necklaces and Cocktail rings There’s no question about it, statement necklaces are becoming more and more common among brides. In a world of understated elegant lace and organza dresses, a statement necklace takes the entire ensemble up a notch while also grabbing everyone’s atten-

tion. Elaine at Pearl’s Place Bridal Boutique added, “Brides are all striving for looks that are different and unlike any other bride. They all want the wow effect!” If your dress is already quite embellished and doesn’t need the pick-me-up, the perfect touch could be a bold cocktail ring. This trend of large, colorful, cocktail rings has become all the rage in the wedding and fashion industry. While these two trends can be mingled, it’s important to consult a professional at your local bridal salon when piecing together your ensemble. Mandy and Melissa at The Bridal Boutique by Mae Me say, “One of the wonderful things about working in bridal is that each bride has a vision, and it is our pleasure to help make that vision a reality.” Adding a variety of pieces to your ensemble, although very exciting, requires a dress rehearsal. This helps you to see what works best and ensures that your dress isn’t competing with your jewelry.

bracelets.” Whether it’s three differently adorned silver bangles with crystal and rhinestone jewels or one beautifully decorated gold bracelet that perfectly complements your dress, this simple yet elegant touch can give your bridal ensemble the “oomph” you were looking for. The shoes that brides are crazy about this year are practical, colorful, and oh so bold. Brides aren’t afraid of heights; platforms have become increasingly popular throughout the industry recently. Mandy and Melissa say, “We love when a bride chooses a fun and flirty, colorful heel for added pizazz!” The traditional white wedding shoe is fading out while colorful, edgy and semi-traditional take the aisle. This latest trend has surely found its way to your local bridal salons, so don’t wait to try on those animal print shoes you thought were out of the question. This year, bridal accessories have taken a turn towards bold, modern, chic, and edgy. These trends leave so much room for brides to really show their individuality. Grab these styles while they’re hot and you’ll surely be the bride no one forgets. In 2012, less is certainly not more.

Bangles and Snazzy shoes As mentioned above, statement jewelry is in and a definite part of bridal fashion this year. Bangles are yet another common way brides let their own individuality stand out. This year it’s all about the bling and if it’s not in the dress, it’s in the accessories. Elaine from Pearl’s Place Bridal Boutique confirmed, “I’m finding a lot brides are looking for bling in their earrings and

Jaclyn Raymond and Justin Meith

Jaclyn Raymond and Justin Meith met sophomore year of high school, shortly after Jaclyn moved to Mandeville. She had met a few of Justin’s close friends and they started to hang out in the same circle of friends. They became close but it wasn’t until after college that it turned into more. Jaclyn says it was tricky adjusting from friends to a romantic relationship at first. They wanted to make sure it was the right thing for them, and they wanted to make sure that they wouldn’t lose each other completely if things didn’t work out. They moved really slowly at first, but things just fell into place, and they knew that they wanted to be with each other for the rest of their lives. Justin decided to ask for Jaclyn’s hand in marriage. It was the day before her birthday and Justin’s mom had invited them over for dinner and cake, as she does for everyone in the family. Jaclyn told Justin that for her birthday, all she wanted was a day of doing nothing: no work, no cleaning, and no obligations. She knew that in the evening, they would be leaving for dinner and cake, so she started to get dressed. Soon enough they were ready to head out the door to his mother’s house. Justin stopped Jaclyn in the living room, and asked her if she wanted to open her present before they left. She was

surprised to reveal a beautiful designer handbag that she absolutely loved. As she was admiring it, putting it over her shoulder, and showing her appreciation, Justin was just watching her. Finally she set it down, and opened it to check out the inside. The first thing to catch her attention was a little box, a ring box. Jaclyn didn’t want to get her hopes up, or make him uncomfortable by making the assumption that it was an engagement ring. Justin popped the question right as she opened the box and laid her eyes on the beautiful ring. The ring setting was Jaclyn’s maternal grandmother’s, with a diamond replacing the pink sapphire that was originally there. She had her eye on the ring since she was a little girl. “Shocked is an understatement for the way I felt in that moment. I was the happiest girl in the world.” The wedding took place at the Mandeville Lakefront on May 14, 2012. The weather was perfect, and a cold front came through the night before. The temperature stayed near 65 degrees all day, and the sun was out without a cloud in the sky. They chose a spot under some beautiful old oak trees; the setting was perfect. Dr. Larry Madden of St. Timothy’s Church married Jaclyn and Justin, as they stood under a beautiful arbor built specifically for the event by her stepfather, Rykert Toledano. They

While spending so much time planning your wedding, don’t forget to plan your marriage too. My mom was my saving grace in the planning process. The Cocoa Bean Bakery in Hammond provided both the wedding cake and groom’s cake. Other friends who recently got married referred The Cocoa Bean Bakery to them. [ mackie says! ]

“Mackie Says!” will be a recurring feature in the NOLA Wedding Guide, and include priceless words of advice from Mackie and his staff for brides who want to look their best on their big day.

Journaling... not just for love notes! There is no question that food journaling is an effective weight management tool. Research agrees that when people track the foods they consume, it helps keep them accountable. No one who is trying to lose weight wants to write down that they ate a supersized burger and fry with a chocolate milk shake. In contrast, no one who is looking to build muscle or increase energy wants to write down that they skipped all meals that day except for a salad for dinner. Logging your meals makes it impossible to ignore poor food choices. And there is something about seeing it all in black and white that acts as a big motivator for good eating habits. Another benefit of food journaling is that it allows you to spot pitfalls in eating trends such as emotional eating. Your food journal should include more than just what you ate. Write down when you ate and how you were feeling at the time. You may find that your journal helps you to recognize and correct negative eating patterns, such as a tendency to eat for emotional reasons rather than hunger. Let’s say that you had a stressful day of wedding planning, and you were popping chocolate candies all day without even realizing how many you ate. By having to write it down, you will find that you become aware of what you are eating and why. If you see a pattern of late night snacks, eating out of boredom or sadness, you can correct these behaviors and keep your diet on track.

72

nola wedding guide

Most importantly food journaling makes you accountable to the foods that you are or are not putting into your body on a daily basis and how those foods make you feel. I cannot tell you how often clients have difficulty recalling what they ate the day before for dinner, what a normal breakfast for them is, what they eat for energy, or how often they eat vegetables. This shows me that they are not aware of the foods they are consuming. Again, a pitfall for weight gain, nutrient deficiencies and lack of energy. This is where a food journal can help. Regardless of the diet you choose or the goal you have in mind, a food journal can help you to stay committed and on track. Food journaling does not have to be forever but it can contribute to a healthier lifestyle— especially in this stressful and ever changing time. Consider keeping a food journal to hold you accountable for all items consumed during the day. Track the time, the item, the amount consumed, and how you felt at the time. This small change can help you in the long run! Jessica Burg and Bradley Little

J

essica Burg and Bradley Little met a crawfish party thrown by friends. They talked all night and he asked for her phone number after he walked her to her car, then called her the next day. They talked the night away and have had many great nights ever since. Brad proposed on New Years Eve 2010. After renting a cabin at Flint Creek, he placed a blanket on the floor by the fireplace and fixed hot chocolate. He spoke words from his heart then got on one knee and asked her to marry him and spend the rest of their lives together. Jessica feels that the invitations sets the tone of your wedding. After visiting with Fergie at Stationery Studio. They chose beautiful classic Italian paper embossed invitations with Brad and her initials, sealed with a fleur de lis wax seal and addressed in exquisite calligraphy. Jessica found her prefect dress at Bridal Boutique. She saw herself in the mirror in her Maggie Soterro gown and the tears in her mother and grandmother’s eyes.

Jessica got her bridesmaids’ dresses at Linda Lee Bridal. The dresses were flattering to all of the ladies in the bridal party no matter what shape or size. All of the wedding party jewelry came from Bridal Boutique by MaeMe. They had the big “bling” bracelet and earrings that made a great statement. Brad had a great experience when shopping for tuxedos at John’s Tuxedos. They made us feel like we were family. We told them what we were looking for and they gave us their welcoming advice. Whitney Compton at Up’sa Daisy Hair Studio did Jessica’s hair beautifully. Whitney came highly recommend. They used hair extensions and put her cathedral length veil in to make sure it was in the perfect spot. They chose Brenda Sison Photography to capture their special day. Jessica says that Brenda was a blast to work with. She and Brad felt the most comfortable with Brenda, which was extremely important to them,

Everyone always told me that the day would fly by and they were surely correct. I would say to cherish every moment. Unfortunately you will not be able to tell everyone hello, but remember that people understand. Dance and enjoy the biggest party you probably will ever plan. Little things may not go as planned but remember that you are probably the only one that will notice. Take a minute or two to walk around the whole venue and absorb the setup; see the ice sculpture and take pictures in the photo booth. The video will help you remember things you missed, but having a mental picture is worth more.

as they would be with her the entire day. Gregory with Digital Video Breakdown was their videographer. Jessica said, “Gregory is a very personable videographer that makes you feel like you have known him all of your life.” Jessica and Brad chose A Regal Limousine for transportation. On the day of the wedding A Regal Limousine presented Jessica and Brad with phenomenal service that they won’t forget. Brad and Jessica first heard Troy Marks and No Idea at the Thoth Mardi Gras ball years ago. They remembered looking at each other after dancing the entire night and saying that the band would play at their wedding one day. Jessica says, “Jesse (with Troy Marks and No Idea) always quickly responded to my questions or concerns. Just like Brad and I danced our shoes off back in the day at the Thoth ball with the band, we did once again with family and friends.”

[ wedding dress storage ] It was love at first sight, the perfect fit for your perfect day - your wedding dress. Although you wore it only once, if you take as much care in preserving your wedding dress as you did in choosing it, then it can be enjoyed as a family heirloom for years to come-symbolizing love and family. Here are a few tips to keep your beloved garment as beautiful as the day you wore it. 1.

You can either have your dress professionally preserved, or you can do it yourself. Either way, your dress should be cleaned within six weeks following your wedding day. Even the smallest stains cause the dress to yellow over time.

2. Professional gown preservation costs between $150 and $500, depending on the amount of soilage. It is recommended to bring your dress to a reputable dry cleaner who cleans about 100 dresses or more a year. 3. If you choose to take things into your own hands, then you must first decide between box and hanger storage. It may be more practical to store the dress in a box, but hanger storage is the best way to prevent hard-to-remove creases. Either way, buy plenty of acid-free tissue paper. 4. For box storage, line an acid-free cardboard box with the tissue paper and lay the hem of the dress in the box. Fold the dress like an accordion, putting tissue paper between each fold. Stuff the bodice of the dress with crumpled tissue. Put some layers of tissue on top and put on the lid (make sure the lid is solid and does not have a plastic window). Store the box in a cool, dry closet. Check the condition of the dress each year, and re-pack so the folds are in different places. 5. For hanger storage, wrap a wide hanger with cotton batting and cover it with muslin. Buy an acid-free cardboard “dress shaper and place it over the hanger. Wrap it in tissue and place the dress over it. Stuff the bodice of the dress and any deep folds with the acid-free tissue paper. Cover the dress with a muslin garment bag and hang it in a cool, dry closet, taking care not to crush it with other clothing. Check the dress each year and wash the muslin cover.

Alex Homes: Cutting Edge Floral Firm Alex Homes loves beautiful things. He loves a beautiful home and putting on beautiful events. As a graduate of Delgado Community College in Interior Design, he certainly knows how to create both. After helping numerous friends with the beautification of their homes and designing parties and events, he knew what he wanted to do with his talents and education. Wanting to take his knowledge of design further, Alex decided to learn floral artistry from John Safely Creative Floral Designs. He then attended seminars and symposiums around the country to see what the top floral designers were doing. He brought what he has learned back to New Orleans to create stunning floral events. He has owned his own business for the past 6 years, and since 2009, has been the owner of Cutting Edge Floral Firm in Terrytown. We recently got the chance to catch up with the self proclaimed creative perfectionist to ask him a few questions on what it means to create one of a kind floral designs for weddings. NWG: What are you currently working on? Alex: I have been travelling back and forth from New Orleans to Atlanta, working on an “All White Party”. It’s keeping me very busy. I travel to Atlanta all the time though because my mother lives there.

Stacy Marks

NWG: What separates you from other “florists”? Alex: We (at Cutting Edge) are not a mom and pop flower shop. We are very tedious in our work. We create custom floral designs. We take your vision or idea and bring it to life. We give it that “Wow!” factor. We start with a theme and orchestrate it, but with that cutting edge. NWG: As far as weddings are concerned, do you have any advice for perspective brides? Alex: Try an assortment of different things. You don’t want redundancy. If you don’t know what to do, we can start with a color palette and use our creative energy to meet and far exceed your expectations. Though budgets do matter, I am not going to give just the minimum. I am going to give you your money’s worth. NWG: Is there anything that you want our readers to know about you and Cutting Edge Floral Firm? Alex: Only the best will do for us. We are refined and educated; young, but not newcomers. I have mastered my art and will bring something on the next level, on any budget. Floral design brings that “flower power” and theatrical flair to fill the room. We are first class all the way. Every client is treated the same regardless of their budget. We cater to our clients. We set up appointments at our studio to talk with our clients one on one to ensure that we make them happy and give their event the “Cutting Edge”.

[ hot honeymoon locales ]

By Jessica Bayard

A

fter your wedding day has come and gone and you’ve said your last goodbyes to your guests, it’s off to the trip of a lifetime with your new husband. There are so many beautiful, exotic and memorable places to choose from that it can be an overwhelming decision to pick just one.

It consists of rolling hills and ancient towns as well as many gothic cathedrals. The highlight of the Romantic Road is the Neuschwanstein Castle, which was the inspiration for the castle at Disney World. There are countless romantic cities in Europe that offer something for all tastes.

If you do a quick Internet search, you find that most honeymoon destinations involve a beach. In fact, seven of the “Top Honeymoon Hot Spots” according to the Travel Channel involve a getaway to a sandy location. Eleven out of the “22 Best Honeymoon Destinations,” from U.S. News Travel, also have beaches in their descriptions. Hawaii ranks high on these lists as well as the Greek Isles. Indonesia and the Caribbean Islands are other top choices. Beaches may lure so many honeymooners because of the relaxed, somewhat lazy ideology that these locales portray. It’s certainly a great way to relieve the stress from the yearlong (or more) wedding planning process.

As enticing and exotic as far away locales can be, there are plenty of amorous places in the United States to consider. Las Vegas, Nevada, is still a hot spot for both elopers and honeymooners though you may spend just as much here, as you would on an exotic getaway. Most casinos/hotels have honeymoon packages that offer luxurious suites, pampering spas and the infamous Vegas nightlife. If the lights and all the nightclub fun of Vegas is not your style, Napa Valley is only a few hours away. California’s scenic wine country boasts plenty of vineyards, small boutiques, hotels and bed and breakfasts. The wineries offer wine tastings and classes to educate the novice wine aficionado.

If the beach scene is not your forte there is an abundance of inland places to suit your taste. Europe is also in high demand for honeymooners. The standard locations such as Paris, France, and Florence, Italy, attract thousands seeking a romantic excursion. Some other romantic European cities are Madrid, Venice, and Edinburgh. If you are seeking a truly romantic European escape you can take a ride on the Romantic Road in Bavaria, Germany.

If nature is calling you, Alaska can certainly be the adventure that you and your new husband have been looking for. You can base your stay in Anchorage and still be just a short drive from nature reserves and awe-inspiring glaciers.

Local travel agents can definitely be helpful when booking your trip. They have the resources and experience to ensure that your honeymoon goes as

w w w .n ol a we ddin g g u ide . c o m

smooth as possible. They have also pretty much seen and heard it all when it comes to the most sought after excursions for newlyweds. Pam Taylor with Going Places Travel in New Orleans says, “Everyone is different. Most people want as much as they can get for the money they are paying. Currently the most popular destinations are Jamaica and Cancun. All-inclusive resorts are what we typically book for honeymooners, because they know up front how much they are going to spend for the total package. Primarily, we seem to book the most recognized resorts such as Sandals, Couples, Dreams, Excellence, Bahia and Iberostar. Many honeymoon couples begin with a recommended hotel and destination from a friend who had recently married.” Pam continues, “We have also had a few requests for the more exotic locales of Fiji, Tahiti, and Hawaii. Although many couples don’t prefer the long flights that accompany these destinations, the cost is often very close to a Caribbean package.”

No matter what your ideal honeymoon destination may be, there are plenty of locations near and abroad to suit your fancy. Just be sure to thoroughly research the areas for the best and safest places to stay, and for the best deals possible. Also be sure to book your trip well in advance to get the best rates on airfare and lodging. You will remember this trip for the rest of your life, so when flipping through dozens of locations choose carefully. This trip will be your first excursion as husband and wife, be sure to thoroughly enjoy it.

Janine Harmon with Harmony Adventures adds, “We are seeing couples getting married and honeymooning in one location, usually at a resort.” Janine says that the most unusual request that she had was when a bride had her ceremony inside a waterfall in Jamaica. She also said that there has been a high demand for honeymoons in St. Lucia, in the Caribbean, since one of the finales of The Bachelorette took place there.

Jessica Lemoine and Kenneth Burlet

Jessica Lemoine and Kenneth Burlet, Jr. met when Jessica was a senior in high school. She had just attended a school dance with a friend and they went to Bourbon Street afterwards. As she was walking down the street, Kenneth approached her by telling her that he liked her shirt. They began talking and really hit it off. Kenneth then got Jessica’s phone number and called her the next day. They spoke over the phone for the next week, getting to know each other. They decided to meet at the movies on a Monday night (which started a tradition of Monday movie night for the couple). Jessica was sitting on a bench in front of the theatre when Kenny walked up to greet her. “I remember thinking, Wow! He is gorgeous! Could I really be so lucky.” Jessica says she would describe Kenny as “funnyromantic.” She says he has a great personality and always makes her laugh; there is never a dull moment with him, which certainly keeps life interesting for her.

108

nola wedding guide

He devised a truly “Kenny” proposal. He called and said that he wanted to try a new item from Taco Bell. Jessica quickly waived it off since she doesn’t like to eat fast food. But he insisted that he would pick up Taco Bell for dinner, Jessica relented. When Kenny arrived home, he set up a coffee table picnic for dinner. As Kenny handed out the food, he gave Jessica a packet of taco sauce. When she glanced at the packet it said, “Will you marry me?” She looked at the packet, then and at Kenny several more times. Kenny was holding a ring, on one knee. She recalls, “I think he had to ask me three times to marry him before I answered! I first thought it was a joke until I saw the ring.” We immediately called my parents who answered the phone “Congratulations!” He then rushed me over to our neighbor’s house where they were snapping pictures. He had everything perfectly set up and caught me by complete surprise.” They chose Cedar Grove Tchoupitoulas Plantation in Waggaman, LA, because Jessica always wanted to get married there. Her parents live close to it and she always loved the unique look and location of the

Enjoy the planning and your wedding to the fullest. It all goes by way too fast. Dance your butt off at your wedding and have fun, you worked so hard to make this ONE night perfect. You want to look back at your pictures and say ‘Yes, I really had a blast!’ And always remember, no matter how perfect you want your wedding to be, it is so easy to get caught up in the whole wedding process. Keep focused and remember it’s not about the actual wedding. It’s about the beautiful life you are choosing to share together. No matter how stressful the planning process can be, at the end of the day it is about you and your hubby to be and the love you share.

plantation on River Road. “When my mom and I went to look at the plantation, I walked in the front doors and just knew this is where I wanted to marry Kenny. Jill and her family made our wedding even more fabulous than she could have ever dreamed it to be. It is a memory that we will cherish forever.

Le Grande not only after admiring their beautiful work, but also after talking to Mark Le Grande about her vision. “Mark was very informative, knowledgeable and had a passion for his work. He listened to what I wanted. I was amazed at how he took what I described and made it reality. Our flowers were breathtaking.”

The wedding was especially dear to Jessica as her father relearned to walk just in time to escort her down the aisle. He had suffered a severe injury after a bad back surgery and worked for over two years to be able to share the special walk down the aisle without the assistance of a walker. She says, “There wasn’t a dry eye in the house as my dad escorted me to my groom. It was the most amazing day of my life!”

Brenda Sison Photography captured the entire day. After meeting Brenda, Jessica knew there was no one else she wanted taking her wedding pictures. Jessica says, “My chemistry with Brenda was great. Both my mom and I loved her instantly! We clicked and immediately talked like we had been friends for years. She made me feel like our wedding was the only wedding she was doing. I had her undivided attention and she listened to how I wanted our special The theme of the wedding was black and white damask day captured. [ the groom’s take ] H

ave you ever wondered what groom’s think about the whole planning process? Usually brides enjoy taking over and making every detail of the wedding perfect while their grooms hang back, but not all grooms fit this description. We spoke to four different New Orleans grooms and they gave us their opinions on a variety of aspects. Some grooms like to take the backseat because the details aren’t what matters to them, while others enjoy the teamwork involved in the entire process.

By Allison Rose

I haven’t been nervous, but I did take a more active role when it came to the music, what my groomsmen are wearing, and my groom’s cake. When it came down to attending the cake tasting, the flower consultation, and anything to do with the church I was content to sit back and let Gabby handle it. I knew that everything would turn out perfectly. -Brian Cook I was calm up until the point that I put the tux on. That was when it really hit me that I was about to get married. I was nervous about the ceremony, but never nervous about the fact that Katie and I were about to get married. -Michael Queen NWG: If you were involved in planning did the process help you two learn to work together and make sacrifices while also strengthen your relationship? How did the finished product make the two of you feel as a team?

Atelier NOLA Photography

The planning process taught us that we do have very different opinions on some things, and that just meant that we had to figure out what would work best for us. We both sacrificed some of our own opinions and worked together to combine our ideas. Working as a team made me feel that we could accomplish anything together. -David Dupuy It strengthened our relationship because we learned to compromise when it came to certain things. We haven’t seen the finished product yet, but I am excited to see all the work we put into it. I feel as if we work very well together. -Brain Cook NWG: How did you help in your own personalized way?

NWG: How did you feel, did you want a more active role or were you content to sit back? I was content to sit back but I am easy going and all the little decisions didn’t matter much to me. As long I am there with the people I love I don’t care about the little stuff. -Ryan Kelly

I designed the shoes that my groomsmen will wear, picked a unique tuxedo that represents my personality more than a traditional one. Gabby and I also picked songs that are must plays at the wedding because they have meaning to our relationship. -Brian Cook

My own personal way of helping was to be supportive of her when she was stressed, because of the large amount of tasks that were before her. -David Dupuy I knew that Katie was very concerned about the cost of the wedding. When she would get overwhelmed with planning the wedding, I would encourage her and help her see the big picture. It was a lot of money to spend, but in the end we would be glad we did. -Michael Queen

I provided comedic relief when times got extremely stressful. -Ryan Kelly NWG: If the bride kept her dress a secret until the wedding, how did that change your reaction to her presentation to you? Both Katie and I talked about this relatively early in the process of planning and we both wanted to follow the tradition of keeping her dress a secret. I think that it made the build up until I saw her walk down the aisle even more exciting. In fact, in addition to keeping her dress a secret, we avoided seeing each other on the day of the wedding. -Michael Queen

Her dress is being kept a secret and I am even more excited about seeing her in it. -Brain Cook

[ new orleans themed weddings ]

Are you dreaming of a New Orleans themed wedding? This article will attempt to guide you in incorporating some great elements of our wonderful city into your wedding, from the king cake to the second line. Many New Orleans brides will put their own special twist on southern traditions, but these days it is not uncommon to experience a completely New Orleans themed event. Giving your guests a taste of all that New Orleans has to offer is also wise in that all of our local vendors are also steeped in the same traditions. Our caterers can surely cook up a great gumbo. In a city rich with tradition and delicious food, it is guaranteed that your guests will enjoy every moment of it. Every New Orleans themed wedding, as per the locals, should include either some or all of the traditions below: Reception Locations Usually, the first and most important step of planning your wedding is reserving the venues and in that department New Orleans offers quite an array of traditional choices. The selections include intimate courtyards, grand

130

ballrooms, plantations, steamboats and more. Many brides find that all of these options give them the opportunity to capture the New Orleans they have come to love, while also allowing them to customize their vision for the big day. A few popular places in each of these categories include: Courtyards / Gardens: Broussard’s Restaurant, The Champagne Palace Ballrooms: Bourbon Orleans Hotel, The Federal Ballroom, Jefferson Orleans South, The Presidential Palace, Riverview Room Steamboats: Steamboat Natchez Plantations: Crystal Plantation, Magnolia Plantation, Southern Oaks Plantation, Taravella Manor Uniquely New Orleans: Jackson Brewery Bistro Bar, Rock ‘n’ Bowl Classic New Orleans Tradition: Second Line Many locals bring the fun to their wedding day with the addition of a second line parade. What’s a second line and why is it so fun? The second line originates from locals joining New Orleans brass bands parading down the streets. It’s called the

w w w .n ol a we ddin g g u ide . c o m

‘second’ line because the ‘first’ line includes the members in the band, while the ‘second’ line includes all the people that join in. Usually done at the end of the wedding and led by the bride and groom waving their custom umbrellas, the second line brings the event to a climax with the guests following the couple and waving handkerchiefs or napkins. The band or D.J., as the guests’ parade in a second line, commonly performs New Orleans Mardi Gras music. Quick tip: In order to parade down any streets in the city you must obtain a permit, to ensure closure of streets from traffic. Contact: Sergeant Walter Powers, Jr. New Orleans Police Department Special Events Section Office: 504.658.6201 Fax: 504.658.6240 Cell: 504.421.4571 wpowers@nola.gov Wedding Accessories and Decorating Ideas It’s common for brides to bring the flare of New Orleans fully to their wedding reception with themed decorations and accessories. A popular choice is the naming of tables after well-known streets in the French Quarter. Great additions to the tables, as centerpieces or placeholders, are the classic French Quarter lampposts. Many locals recognize a New Orleans themed wedding by the color scheme; and most of them either choose Mardi Gras colors or French Quarter shades such as maroon, black, beige, and white. The themed colors can be used as a guide for the table linens, chair covers, and even handkerchiefs.

On Location Photography

Two of the hottest trends in New Orleans themed wedding accessories are personalized second line umbrellas and monogrammed handker-

chiefs. Most brides enjoy making the night even more their own by personalizing their accessories. Decorating the space with antique candelabras or incorporating the Fleur de lis could give your New Orleans themed wedding a finishing touch. Some of these items may act as great keepsakes and wedding favors to ensure all of your guests remember your New Orleans style nuptials. Unforgettable Food New Orleans is famous for its spicy, sweet, and savory southern dishes. One of the best ways to capture the true spirit of New Orleans in your wedding is to provide guests with a menu filled with delicious entrées. Please refer to our “Signature Dishes” article to see pictures and more information on classic New Orleans style food. Some of the most popular and traditional New Orleans dishes/desserts: Red Beans and Rice Jambalaya Crawfish Risotto Gumbo Sno-Balls Hubig’s Pies King Cake Quick Tip: A great place to order a year round king cake is Gambino’s Bakery, a New Orleans bakery for over 50 years. Their personalized take on the city’s most popular desert has made them one of the only options for locals seeking the best king cake. Gambino’s Bakery 4821 Veterans Memorial Boulevard Metairie, LA 70006 (504) 885-7500 Hurricane Season The unpredictability of New Orleans weather is legendary. The humidity levels make it difficult to explain to non-locals just how hot 80 degrees feels here as compared to other places. Hurricane season must always be considered when planning a wedding in New Orleans. Because of our close proximity to the Gulf of Mexico and our low sea level, the city is extremely susceptible to flooding. The hurricane season, in the Atlantic Ocean, starts on June 1st and ends November 30th. Although you can’t predict weather changes very far ahead, you’ll be in the know for what to expect around that time of year. Our city is truly charming and endearing and the first time one experiences it, it is downright magical. There are not many people that won’t admit to loving New Orleans. Combining your wedding with our great city is a win for everyone.

[ wedding tales ]

Kathryn Pflug and Michael Chapetta

athryn Pflug and Michael Chapetta met their freshman year of college. They both sat in the front row of biology class and it all began when Mike asked her for some notes. Their first date was to a Chi Omega formal (Katie’s sorority). They continued to be each other’s dates to their respective sorority and fraternity functions. The two of them always had a good time.

K

yellows for their wedding.

They continued dating and Mike planned to pop the question. Katie came home from an exhausting day of work, a whopping 4 hours late. Mike had driven in from Baton Rouge after an all night shift, weary from lack of sleep, to wait for Katie to get home. When she walked in, she saw that he had strewn rose petals throughout the house. He then asked her to be his wife and she gladly accepted his proposal.

The Cocoa Bean Bakery provided both the wedding cake and the groom’s cake. Katie said it was the best wedding cake she has ever had. “I was so impressed with Anthony’s service, talent, and most importantly, cake! Both the bride’s and groom’s cakes were very fresh, and everyone went back for seconds!”

Katie and Mike were wed on March 24, 2012. They chose a theme of platinum, soft pinks and

They chose Brenda Sison Photography to capture their special day. Katie and Mike both recalled how much of a pleasure it was to work with Brenda. “I absolutely love the photos,” says Katie, “her passion for art shines through in all of the pictures she takes.”

Katie and Mike wanted something a little different when it came to their transportation. They chose Bonomolo Limos and used the trolley limo, which they said was the unique and fun addition they

were looking for. Katie adds, “These guys embody what it truly means to demonstrate impeccable customer service.” When it came to the entertainment, Katie knew that she wanted Four Unplugged for her wedding day. “These guys really know how to throw a party,” she said, “I knew they put on a good festival show because I had seen them multiple times on the North Shore, but they blew me away at the wedding. They played nonstop with great music that everyone, and I mean everyone, had a great time dancing to.” Kathryn Pflug and Michael Chappetta March 24, 2012 Cakes: The Cocoa Bean Bakery Music: Four Unplugged Transportation: Bonomolo Limousine Photography: Brenda Sison Photography www. n o la we ddin g g u ide . c o m

our wedding pictures are a way to relive the special moments of your wedding day for years to come. When your photographer gives you the finished pictures and it is time to get them printed, you have an important decision to make: you can either get them printed at a drugstore/discount department store or you can have them processed by a professional lab. Though the drugstores may have slightly cheaper prices, the professional lab has the more experienced staff that is dedicated solely to the printing of images. The professional labs do not have seasonal employees who get limited training. They also do not sell anything else other than photo processing. Primary Digital Imaging is a local imaging lab based in Kenner. They work with most of the professional wedding photographers in the city and have been in business for over 50 years. They are committed to providing the highest quality, color photographic services, along with dependable delivery and outstanding customer service.

On Location Photography

Robbie Holland, with Primary, says, “Your wedding is one of the biggest events in your life. You hired many professionals to make the event as special as possible. As a professional lab, we are making sure that you get the very best quality from your images. This is our primary focus. We are not a store with a lab in the back. Our equipment is state-of-the-art and our staff is fully trained to make sure that the images are printed correctly. Your photographer took extensive time to edit your images, giving you the very best. Therefore, you should make sure that those images are of the highest standard.

[ second line parade ]

For more information on booking a second line band, call Stu at the Howlin’ Wolf, 504-522-9653.

The sounds of the instruments (trumpet, tuba, trombone, sax, banjo and clarinet) are coupled with a snare and bass drum. A Grand Marshal will lead your wedding guests around a French Quarter block announcing and celebrating your event. These parades began back in the 19th century, with organizations advertising for burials and honoring the deceased all in one announcement. Many newlyweds can be seen with their umbrellas, white for the bride, black for the groom, and their guests holding handkerchiefs as they follow the band.

On Location Photography

If you want a traditional New Orleans wedding, you want to hire a brass band for a Second Line Parade. It is a way of expressing the unique local flavor of the city. The Second Line is the parade of people following the musicians, who are called the “First Line”.
