[ letter from the editor ] W
hen I tell people that I own a wedding magazine it usually elicits a strong response. “I hate weddings”, or “I’m never getting married,” being two of the most popular. I keep waiting for the day when I can be jaded and bored and also say that I hate weddings. “The brides are a pain; my art suffers because I have to do what the bride wants and not what I want, the parking is always a hassle,” these are just a few of the things that I have heard from various wedding vendors over the years. I can think of millions of things much worse than weddings, however, it just seems to be the fashionable thing to dislike them. Perhaps it’s the adult version of the disinterested high school kid who is way too cool for school and must let everyone know about it.
Well, I must say that I love everything about weddings. I love the glow in a nervous father’s eyes as he walks his daughter down the aisle. I love the adorable little flower girls and ring bearers as they are coaxed down the aisle by their anxious parents. I love the way that a groom will sometimes caress his bride’s hand as they kneel at the altar. I love when couples write their own vows and their families are hanging on every word. I love when a rainbow suddenly appears at an outdoor wedding and the bride knows exactly what it means. I love the first dance. I love the parents’dance(especiallythefather/daughter and even more so if one of them cries). I love the unique cakes and the cake cutting (though I can’t eat it anymore due to an ever expanding waistline). I love when the bridal party dances to Thriller or Grease or some song that they rehearsed and everyone goes crazy. I love it all. Every single bit of it. To me, weddings are magical. Weddings are about the union of two people coming together in the eyes of God. They are about families reconciling their differences for the common good, new beginnings, fresh starts, clean slates and the hope

of better things. They are about peace, understanding, fellowship, and completely offering to share your life, dreams and aspirations with another human being. Simply put, weddings are about love. Unending love! Love that will triumph over the things of the world. Love that will last when all else fails. Love that will follow you to eternity. Sounds terrible, doesn’t it. I am absolutely ecstatic to welcome our newest advertisers and partners the House of Blues, the Ritz Carlton and the W Hotel to the Nola Wedding Guide. I am honored to share these outstanding venues with our brides in this issue, and have done photo shoots at each of them to showcase the properties. I hope you enjoy the pictures. I offer a huge thanks to all who worked on them. It was fun! In this issue, I have also included a feature on WDSU news anchor and reporter Randi Rousseau’s wedding, a 15 top wedding trends list and so much more. We hope you enjoy it and find some inspiration to aid you in your wedding planning. Happy planning! God bless,
Troy Marks

Wedding fashion and decor have recently begun to revert back to the opulence of the 1920’s. With big Hollywood movies like “The Great Gatsby” and television shows like “Boardwalk Empire” all the rage, the Roaring 20’s are back along with its timeless and elegant fashion sense. The Ritz-Carlton, synonymous with affluence and luxury, was chosen to breathe life into our Prohibition Era styled shoot. From the lavish courtyard formal dinner scene, to the speakeasy bar room reception, we bring you inspiration from this decadent, yet stunningly beautiful, time in America’s history. Danielle Lapuyade and Michael McLeod March 23, 2013 How/When did you meet? Mike and I met in 2007 while attending LSU. My roommate and Mike’s cousin set us up. What was your favorite part of planning? My favorite part of planning was adding in all of the small details to really make the wedding our own. I loved meshing Mike’s fun, laid back style with my love for sophistication and elegance. Did your fiancé help in the planning process? Somewhat. He mainly informed me of things he definitely did not like, but he had a huge part in choosing the cakes, food, and music. What was your first dance song? “Little Moments” by Brad Paisley. It always reminds me of when we first met in college. At your reception, did you stay in heels or switch to flats? I brought flip flops just in case I needed them, but I ended up wearing my heels all night! They were too comfortable to worry about switching. What was your color scheme? Diamond Thomas and Dirck Gillam May 11, 2013 How/When did you meet? Dirck and I met our first year in Pharmacy school at Xavier University. We were assigned to the same community service group. What was your favorite part of planning? My favorite part was shopping with my mom and sisters for my beautiful dress. Dirck’s was attending our caterers’ food tasting party. Did your fiancé help in the planning process? Yes!!! Dirck helped out more than I did. I mostly spent time on Pinterest gathering ideas and Dirck handled the execution along with our wedding planner. He worked every other week, so on his week off, he would focus on the wedding. He was amazing! What was your first dance song? “A Couple of Forevers” by Chrisette Michele At your reception, did you stay in heels or switch to flats? I quickly switched to red sparkly flats like Dorothy’s, I was on my feet the whole night! What was your color scheme? I wanted something different so we had Tiffany blue with pops of bright red. It gave a classic feel to the wedding. “The whole night we danced and danced! One of the most memorable things from the reception was the secondline and getting my family, mostly from New Jersey, involved.” Venue: The Federal Ballroom Transportation: Big Easy Limos (Car and Limo) Transportation: Alert Transportation (Shuttle Bus) Photographer: North Productions Videographer: North Productions www. n o la we ddin g g u ide . c o m

[ online registry ]
by Allison Rose
The Tech-Savvy Bride T
he idea of a wedding registry once involved kiosks and long lines in department stores, but those days have swiftly come to an end. Technology has reinvented the way modern brides think of wedding registries forever. The steps that a bride takes, from announcing engagements to choosing a style of china, can now all be done online. Brides now have access to international stores and the convenience of linking all registries into one, central location. Timelines One should start the registry process about 6-12 months prior to the wedding. When beginning, it’s a great idea to send out registry announcement cards. These cards will help your guests to get an idea of what types of gifts you’re expecting, and to better manage their time in choosing one. Below is a registry timeline to help you with organizing and making your registry experience more efficient for everyone. Websites A few websites to help you with the registry process are: myregistry.com, weddingchannel.com, theknot. com, giftregistry360.com and amazon.com. Most of these sites contain options that allow you to create your own wedding page, send registry updates to social networking sites, and consolidate all registered stores into one. When choosing registry locations, be sure to check the exchange/return policy. This important step can save you trouble if you have to return any duplicate or broken items that you receive. Theknot.com offers an interactive checklist, which makes it virtually impossible for you to forget wedding registry essentials. The convenience of these websites is also shared with your guests in that they don’t have to leave the house to purchase a gift. Smart phones now have applications like “Gift Registry 360 Scan & Add,” which has the capability to scan and add items instantly to the bride’s registry.
items, but make it a point to have a wide range of gift options at varying price points—that way, everyone wins! Charity It has been said that it is better to give than to receive. Should you desire to do so, setting up a partnership with a local charity is a great way to start your new life together. Donating your wedding gifts to those who are less fortunate can bring you far more in return than the gifts themselves. This giving is also a great way for your guests to contribute money to an admirable cause of your choosing and possibly continue to give more in the future. Some local charities that have impeccable service records are: www.handsonneworleans.org www.vineyardneworleans.org| 504 467-3257 6-12 months: Begin the process by determining your registry locations and choosing what items you would like. Create a wedding website so that guests are able to keep up with your registry updates. 2-3 months: At this point, be sure that you have chosen items in various categories and price ranges. Send registry announcements and let your family and friends spread the word. 1 month: If you are moving, be sure to update your shipping address at all of your registry locations. Do a final update of your registry. 3-4 weeks post wedding: It’s thank you card time and most registry sites will include a tracker so that you won’t forget anyone.
Organizing Your wedding registry should be comprised of several categories, including: kitchen, bathroom, home improvement, décor, and appliances. Websites will help you narrow down and organize your needs by providing suggestions and subcategories. From these subcategories, it will be easier for you to decide on styles and other specifics. Consult with your fiancé on registry items and decide as a couple on the wants and needs of your future home. It can be tempting to choose only lavish, expensive things to furnish your new life, but it’s important to be considerate of your guests’ budgets. It’s okay to choose some big-ticket

Jenna Leigh and Justin Groetsch April 13, 2013 How/When did you meet? We met August 26, 2009 at Cafe Du Monde in Kenner, LA. What was your favorite part of planning? My favorite part of planning was finding the perfect dress, which couldn’t have been done without Mrs. Barbara Groetsch(my mother in law). She was by my side every step of the way. Most of all I loved how close it brought all of our family and friends! Did your fiancé help in the planning process? Yes, even though my husband was in Austin, TX for almost 6 months he played a big part in helping with the planning. All I have to say is thank goodness for smart phones; this was our way of looking at things together and making decisions. What was your first dance song? The song that we had our first dance to was “Always” by Frank Sinatra. The words are simple, but say exactly what we want to let the other person know. At your reception, did you stay in heels or switch to flats? I stayed in heels for the whole wedding, ceremony and reception. It took me so long to decide on what the perfect shoe would be to wear with my dress, there was no way I was changing out of them. What was your color scheme? Since my wedding was in Spring, I went with ivory, sage green, lavender and a deep purple. “I am very close with my husband’s mother and father. They are like my parents too. She was my Matron of Honor and his dad was the Best Man. They both walked me down the isle. Jessica Rogers and Philip Mestayer April 13, 2013 How/When did you meet? Philip and I met by chance in August 2010. I was going to dinner with a few coworkers and one of them invited Philip. Never in a million years did I think I would be meeting my future husband at dinner with a few coworkers! We had our 1st official date 1 week later! What was your favorite part of planning? My favorite part of wedding planning was finding my dress and sending the invitations out! My dress made me feel like a princess! The invites being sent were one of my last things to do in regards to planning, and boy was that a great feeling! Did your fiancé help in the planning process? Did Phillip help with wedding planning? Anyone that knows him would laugh and say no. He did however help set our date. We were not allowed to get married during LSU football season!!! Oh, and of course he came to the cake tasting!!! What was your first dance song? Our first dance was “I Won’t Let Go” by Rascal Flatts. At your reception, did you stay in heels or switch to flats? Heels of course!! Give a girl the right pair of shoes and she can conquer the world! What was your color scheme? My color scheme was made up of pinks, creams, and ivory. Pink has always been my favorite color. I wanted a classic, simple, elegant color scheme. “The wedding was perfect! We have been told by many that it was ‘amazing and magical’!” Venue: Southern Oaks Plantation Bakery: Gambino’s Hair: Up‘Sa Daisy Salon Bridal and Bridesmaids’ Attire: Bridal Boutique by MaeMe Groom’s and Groomsmen Attire: John’s Tuxedos Transportation: Alert Transportation Photographer: Sison Photography Videographer: All About You Videography www. n o la we ddin g g u ide . c o m

Focused Moments Phtography
Nicole Ralston & Michael Hellier
e held our second “Featured Couple Facebook Contest” in May and were once again overcome by the huge response from the many couples and their friends and family that participated. Our winners this go around, Nicole and Michael, won by a lead of over 140 votes from the runners up! Nicole is originally from Naples, FL and Michael is from Jacksonville, FL. The couple currently resides in New Orleans after falling in love with the city while visiting it all through grad school. Nicole works at UNO in First Year Experience with first year students and making sure they are successful. Michael works at Harmony Neighborhood Development, a nonprofit group, as a real estate and economic development fellow. We asked them about their upcoming wedding on November 9, 2013 and how the planning has gone so far. We would like to share their story.
Nicole: Unfortunately our new relationship had to come to a standstill because Michael was scheduled to study abroad in Spain from July-August 2008. I remember dropping Michael off at class that day knowing that he’d be leaving shortly for Spain. I was surprised when he called me after landing in NYC while waiting for a layover and that’s when I knew this was going to be a great relationship. We kept in touch through postcards, email and Facebook. NWG: Describe your first date. Nicole: When Michael returned from Spain he called me and asked me to dinner to my favorite Cuban place. I’m half Cuban so I appreciated this thought!
NWG: How did you meet? Nicole: We met in the summer of 2008 when we were in Greek Life at The Florida State University (GO NOLES)! I’m a member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority and Michael is a member of Chi Phi Fraternity. Our organizations were paired as homecoming partners and some of the members planned a river tubing trip in May of 2008. Sure enough, while everyone was getting ready, in walked Michael and I was instantly thankful that I went on the trip! Michael: Our float popped, I was wearing a tiny t-shirt, and there was a cowboy. It was very romantic.

dreams and passions. He is the exact opposite of me but we share the same interests so we balance and complement each other perfectly! We both changed a lot in college but we developed together. We decided to attend graduate school in separate locations so that we could both pursue our interests. We were long distance for two years: I was at NC State in Raleigh and he was at Georgia Tech in Atlanta. We decided to job search in our favorite city, New Orleans! I got a job first and moved down in May and Michael shortly followed in August!
Focused Moments Phtography
Michael: I was trying to impress her with the finest Cuban cuisine in Tallahassee, FL. Nicole: I was really nervous though so I asked some of my friends to come. Poor Michael thought it was just going to be me! After that we continued to hang out and shortly before classes started, Michael and I made it official on August 27, 2008!

NWG: Describe your courtship leading up to the engagement. Nicole: We dated throughout college and I knew early on that this was going to be a long-term relationship. Michael is one of the kindest and most stable individuals I know and he has always allowed me to follow my
Michael: Looking back I realize how lucky we are. We spent the best years of college together, both graduated from Florida State University, and left knowing what we wanted to do with our careers. It wasn’t easy spending two years at separate grad schools, but we have a stronger relationship and brighter future because of it. NWG: How did he propose? Nicole: We began looking at rings shortly after Michael moved to New Orleans (at this point we had been dating for 4 years). I found a ring that I loved in an antique shop on Royal St, and I found out later that Michael went back and purchased it! Michael planned to propose on the morning of the FSU vs. Clemson game, because we would be surrounded by friends all weekend and of course FSU is where we met. The morning of the game Michael told me we had to get ready to tailgate early so that we could meet up with a tailgate that his former boss was hosting across campus. I somehow thought this was completely normal, although looking back he was talking about an area of campus where people do not tailgate. He walked me across campus to the FSU “Kissing Bench”. On the way there he was starting to get a little funny: saying he was really thirsty, stopping to look at trees, etc. We stopped at the kissing bench and he told me to sit down. He started telling me how much he loved me, and how great I was, and how he wanted to spend forever with me. Then he got down on one knee and proposed! Michael: I had Alex and Cailin Smith of Focused Moments Photography (two great friends from my hometown) there as well to take pictures during the proposal. It turned out to be the perfect weekend celebrating with all of our friends in town for the game. NWG: How has the planning gone so far? Nicole: The planning is going great! We decided early on that we wanted to get married in our favorite city, NOLA. We got all of the big stuff done early- vendor, cake, music, photography, and dress- so now we are just finalizing the little details. The most time consuming thing is my bouquet. I am making myself a brooch bouquet and collecting brooches from both sides of the family so it’s going to be a sentimental keepsake.

Michael: It’s been pretty easy so far. We have all the key steps taken care of. I’d suggest excel spreadsheets, for everything!

Nicole: My biggest piece of advice is to find a real partner in life. A partner who is equal and pitches in with home life, finances, supports your career goals, and openly communicates with you. I am so grateful that I found someone early on who was not scared off by my ambitions and dreams. I also think that open communication (especially about finances, because
people naturally tend to not want to talk about this) is key and you should always tell each other how you’re feeling, shower compliments on your partner, and never stop dating! We have been together for about 5 years now but we always make time for each other and try new things: kayaking, hiking, trying new restaurants, and attending all of the awesome festivals New Orleans offers! Throughout the planning process we also enrolled in a financial planning course which helped us really nail down our future goals and how to get there financially. I highly recommend this!

NWG: Any advice for future couples? Michael: I think our relationship is so great because we balance each other well. We’re quite different, but that keeps things fun and interesting in my opinion. A lot of people ask us how we handled the long distance relationship for so long. We made it our goal to move to New Orleans after graduation, which I believe is critical. It’s important to have complimentary ambitions to strive for, and eliminate as much uncertainty as possible.
Precious Memories Phtography
We are trying to create a vintage New Orleans wedding. We also have family on both sides helping us with little things like the exit throws and welcome bags. Michael is a great partner to plan with and he is very hands on and keeps everything organized.

Bayley Eck and Ian Hubble April 6, 2013 How/When did you meet? Ian and I met in 2006 during our junior year of high school. I was a cheerleader for Archbishop Rummel and he was on their football team. What was your favorite part of planning? My favorite part of planning was the food and cake tastings! Did your fiancé help in the planning process? Nope, my mom told him all he had to do was show up, and that’s exactly what he did! What was your first dance song? We danced to “From this Moment on” by Shania Twain and Brian McKnight. At your reception, did you stay in heels or switch to flats? I’m not sure how I did it, but I stayed in my heels the entire night! I even had some flats at the reception hall, but never changed into them. What was your color scheme? My color scheme was coral with a little bit of an eggplant purple. “Our wedding day was perfect! All of the staff at Presidential Palace made sure everything ran smoothly and took care of everyone. Randi Rousseau & Jonathan Serigne
In New Orleans, we hold our local celebrities in very high esteem. So it’s perfectly natural that we would be curious to see what wedding planning was like for one of our beloved local celebrities who recently tied the knot: WDSU news anchor and reporter, Randi Rousseau. Randi was kind enough to grab some coffee with us and talk about her 1920’s inspired wedding that took place on May 10, 2013. The petite, effervescent blonde told us how she and her new husband, Jonathan Serigne, first met, what inspired her to incorporate a vintage 1920’s theme into her wedding and how her beloved grandfather smiled down on her as she walked down the aisle. The Beginning Randi met Jonathan’s cousin, Dave, at a Wednesdays at the Square concert in Lafayette Square. She befriended Dave and his group of friends and would bump into this group of guys, which included Jonathan, over the next few months. After losing touch for a couple of years, Randi and Jonathan were reacquainted at a local bar during

a Saints’ game and soon became very close friends. After garnering up the courage to ask Randi out on a date, Jonathan took her out to dinner, and then to see a comedy show. Randi recalls about that night, “We were having such a good time that we didn’t want the night to end, so we went on to end the night with drinks and dancing. I knew after this night that I had met a really special guy and that I wanted him permanently in my life.” Fortune Smiles Jonathan was all set to propose to Randi and he devised a wonderful plan to take her by complete surprise. He asked Randi to accompany him to a work function at Muriel’s restaurant in the French Quarter next to Jackson Square. Randi was excited to go since she had never been to Muriel’s. The couple was enjoying the Royal Street Stroll during the New Orleans Wine

and Food Experience and making their way to the restaurant when Jonathan decided to check on the “reservation” via email on his phone. Noticing Jonathan’s annoyance, Randi was told that their table had been double-booked. Randi suggested that they just enjoy the evening and continue walking around the Quarter. Randi says, “Then Jonathan suggested something that really surprised me.” He pretended to spot a fortune teller and then led Randi over to get their palms read. “It was really out of character for him, but I just assumed that because we were on a special date, that he was making an exception,” continues Randi. The fortune teller started with Randi’s reading, including a three card reading for her past, present and future. When the fortune teller flipped over the third card, representing the future, she asked Randi if she was a Gemini. “I flipped out and said, ‘Get out,’” says Randi, “I couldn’t believe that card was selected because I am a Gemini. She said the card wasn’t pulled often, and then asked if Jonathan was my boyfriend and if we were in love. I said yes, and then she told me that this card was meant for me, since the Gemini shows that we will have love and happiness for all eternity. She then turned over the card and on the bottom were the words, ‘Randi Will You Marry Me?’” Randi was completely shocked as Jonathan got down on one knee and officially asked her to marry him. “Of course I said yes!” she adds. “It was the most thoughtful and original proposal, and totally defines Jonathan’s character. It was such a beautiful evening.“ Both sets of parents were in the restaurant across the street watching the whole scene unfold and then the celebration commenced. The Planning Randi says that her wedding planning process was pretty much stress free. They first picked their venue, Southern Oaks Plantation. It had the capacity that they needed, 250-300 guests, and the ambiance and the warm coloring also helped seal the deal. “They took care of everything, and I could always add details to my package at anytime,” Randi added. www. n o la we ddin g g u ide . c o m

The inspiration for a 1920’s theme took hold when Randi and Jonathan were looking for presents to give to their bridal party and Jonathan wanted to give his groomsmen fedoras as a gift. They soon decided to theme the entire wedding around the 1920’s flappers and gangsters’ motif. It turned out to be a great choice. The only stressful part of planning for Randi was picking out the bridesmaids’ dresses. It took her five months to find affordable and elegant 1920’s style dresses that would look equally good on all of her bridesmaids. She even had to change her original color scheme to match the dresses. The headpieces also proved to be a bit tricky. Randi says that picking out her dress was very simple and enjoyable. “I went to Pearl’s Place and I was in and out that same day. I tried on my dress and when I walked out, everyone commented on how it looked like a dress that an old Hollywood star would wear.”Jonathan and his groomsmen had a similar experience at John’s Tuxedos. Their Calvin Klein Legends tuxedos fit the theme perfectly. Randi says her favorite part of the planning process was coming up with the unique pieces such as her bobble heads cake topper and her vintage newspaper favors. She found both online. For the bobble

heads she sent in photos of herself and Jonathan, as well as photos of Flapper attire, to www.wowbobble.com. “I loved the way they came out! They looked just like us! They are now sitting on our fireplace mantle at home,” she says. For the newspaper favors she sent in photos and a questionnaire from her and Jonathan, their families and also their friends, to www.newsfavor.com. She received the newspaper favors just two weeks prior to the wedding, and was delighted to re-live their courtship and proposal as well as read the comments from their friends and relatives. Dark Clouds and Silver Linings The big day finally came and all of the preparations had been made for a beautiful outdoor ceremony. However, as we all know, New Orleans has a very rainy spring season and the skies were dark throughout the day. As Randi arrived at Southern Oaks, she felt a bit sad to have to carry out the rainy day contingency plan for the evening. Randi recalls, “Mr. Bobby (at Southern Oaks) kept looking at the radar, hoping that the rain would let up in time for the ceremony. It looked really bad at first, but then about 30 minutes before the ceremony was to start, he ran in and said that the rain was gone and that he would get everything ready for the outdoor ceremony!” Sure enough, the Southern Oaks staff took to the wet lawn with air blowers to dry the grass and then
w w w .n ol a we ddin g g u ide . c o m
proceeded to set up for Randi and Jonathan’s ceremony. The staff went above and beyond to get everything perfect for the ceremony. There was 1920’s music piping through the sound system as their guests arrived and made their way to their seats. Just as Randi was to walk down the aisle to Ella Fitzgerald’s rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”, a double rainbow appeared in the eastern sky. It was completely surreal, yet so appropriate. “I chose my wedding date because it was my grandfather’s birthday. I was very close to him and thought that getting married on his birthday would make my day even more special,” says Randi. “When I saw that rainbow and heard the song, I cried because I knew that my grandfather was looking down on me, and it was just too much to keep in.” Another special moment took place during the ceremony. Randi’s mom was a teacher and Randi recalls her childhood being an “enchanted world” full of stories told by her mother. One such story, “The Places You’ll Go” by Dr. Seuss, served as one of the readings during the ceremony. The ceremony concluded beautifully with a horse drawn carriage ride and a fireworks display, compliments of Southern Oaks.
The Reception The party then moved inside for the reception. Old photos of Randi and Jonathan’s grandparents were displayed all around the inside of the venue. Though the wedding invitations said optional 1920’s dress, nearly every guest donned vintage garb. Randi says, “I was really surprised at the amount of great costumes I saw. It truly was like we were back in the 20’s.” For their first dance, Randi and Jonathan choreographed a dance to Frank Sinatra’s “The Way You Look Tonight.” “Jonathan loves to sing karaoke. He sings at his relatives’ and friends’ weddings, so of course everyone assumed that he would sing at ours,” says Randi. “Then, halfway through the song, I started singing, and awed everyone. I’m not a singer, but it’s Frank Sinatra, so I got away with it.” Everyone was on the dance floor all night as the song list was handpicked by Randi and Jonathan. “We had a very soulful set list and added in some Michael Jackson here and there, so it was a huge dance party,” added Randi. Advice from Randi Since Randi had a virtually stress free planning experience, we asked her to give our readers some advice for their planning. “Pick the top five things that

you can’t live without for your wedding and budget for those things. Everything else, you can just add on the back end,” says Randi. Randi’s Top 5: • Venue - “We loved how Southern Oaks took care of everything for us” • Photographer - “I loved Stacy Marks’ style, the way he lays out his books. He was also so easy to work with.” • Unique things - “Our bobble heads and newspaper favors were my favorite part.” • His Ring - “I got the jeweler to put my thumbprint on the inside of Jonathan’s ring, instead of just an inscription. I thought that was very special.” • Her Dress/Head Piece & Flower Girls Dresses - “The flower girls’ dresses were expensive, but I just had to have them.” Randi loved every moment of her 1920’s themed celebration. The only regret she has is that it ended too quickly. “If I would do anything differently, I would have opted for the extra hour. We got caught up in the hustle and bustle and it just seemed to go by so fast,” she says. “We ended up continuing the party on Bourbon Street, though.” Randi and Jonathan concluded their wedding celebration with a honeymoon in Paris.

VEAL CHOP JILL:
2 (12-14 ounce) veal chops, on the bone ½ cup all-purpose flour Salt and black pepper 1/3 cup vegetable oil 2 cups arugula Lemon halves
Slicing down with a knife, butterfly the chops. Spread the “wings” on either side and pound out until very thin. Coat with flour, shaking off any excess, and season with salt and pepper. Heat the vegetable oil in a skillet and spread out each veal chop to brown, turning once, about 3 minutes in all. Set on a baking sheet and finished cooking in a preheated 425-degree oven, 10-12 minutes. Meanwhile, prepare the uncooked sauce by combining all ingredients in a mixing bowl. To serve, top each veal chop with arugula and then spoon on the sauce. Garnish with lemon halves and drizzle with olive oil. Serves 2.

[ the center (piece) of attention ]

ost brides want to make that “Wow!” statement at their wedding. One way to have a creative and unique “Wow!” factor is through the centerpieces at your reception. This year, we are seeing fewer flowers, and it seems to be all about the containers that you use. Bird Cages 2013 has gone to the birds! We saw this huge trend in home design first in the latter part of 2012 and it has carried over to the wedding industry in 2013. We love it! Brides have taken small wired birdcages and filled them with flowers, fake birds, fruit, and just about anything else they can come up with, and put them at either all of their tables or just at the main tables reserved for the family. Feathers Feathers are everywhere in wedding fashion right now. We have seen them adorning gowns, included in bridal bouquets, on shoes, in hair accessories and now in centerpieces. If you are all about glamour, having very big feathers being used in centerpiece displays, usually pluming out of tall vases screams glamour! Branches Though we saw branches used a lot in the winter, we are now seeing them used year round. Some have blooms and others are very tall with beautiful crystals or pearls suspended from them. You may even combine two trends together and hang small fake birds from the branches.

Fruits and Veggies There are so many vibrantly colored food items that can be used in lieu of flowers in vases as centerpieces. Lemons in tall, clear, cylindrical vases, or limes in short, glass bowls were very popular during the spring and summer months. You can also use red bell peppers, cayenne peppers, apples, oranges, eggplants, or anything that you can find in season that matches your color scheme. Succulents These beautiful, ornamental plants can make a simple, elegant statement as centerpieces. There are many varieties to choose from and their striking, unusual appearance will definitely catch the attention of your guests. Bottles From vintage coke bottles to spray-painted wine bottles, this trend is very affordable and simple. Adding some small flowers or greenery will top off the bottles just so to let your guests marvel at how simply creative you are! Whatever your tastes may be, your guests will certainly take away a sense of your style when you have personalized centerpieces throughout your reception. Not every table has to be adorned, though. Mix it up and have fun!

Tammy Riley & Peter Kraemer April 26, 2013 How/When did you meet? Pete and I met in 1997 at work. We were both working at the Monsanto Plant in Luling, Louisiana. We are both big animal lovers and used to talk about our respective “zoos” while we worked together. We were “just friends” for over nine years before we ever dated. What was your favorite part of planning? For me I think it was designing all of the clothing for the wedding especially Pete and his knights. Everyone had their own family crest appliqued and embroidered on their doublet, but I tried to add little touches in the embroidery that made it really reflect each one of their personalities and interests. Did your fiancé help in the planning process? Pete was my sounding board for all of the clothing design. He also made all of the shields for his knights to carry for the ceremony with their family crests. He did everything from bending the wood on a form, painting the designs on the shields and all the leatherwork for the straps and braces. What was your first dance song? That’s kind of funny because it was supposed to be “Planxty Burke” by the great Irish bard Turlough O’Carolan, but the music discs got mixed up and we ended up dancing to “O’Carolan’s Farewell to Music” that I had recorded for the end of the reception. We had a good laugh about it. At your reception, did you stay in heels or switch to flats? I stayed in my heels the whole time. I hadn’t even brought other shoes. They were really comfortable. What was your color scheme? Dusky blue, black and silver for my ladies in waiting and Pete’s knights, and my dress was ivory and sage. My knight in shining armor wore black and gold with burgundy trim. “The Louisiana Castle was the perfect setting for our fairy tale wedding. Once we were sure we were going to have a Renaissance wedding, I knew I wanted to make the clothing myself. I loved designing and sewing our wedding clothes. Pete got really involved with arming his knights. He learned a lot about leatherwork, and how to construct shields. He researched swords appropriate to that era.” Venue: Louisiana Castle Bakery: Gambino’s Photographer: Sonny Randon

Ava Salehi and Daniel Heagney March 15, 2013 How/When did you meet? We were in the music department together at George Mason University; he was a percussion performance major and I was a music education major. Actually, the very first time we ever met was right after my audition to get into the school, in the Spring of 2005. Dan was outside the audition room with a handful of business cards. He introduced himself and handed me his card. What was your favorite part of planning? Choosing a rehearsal dinner venue. Dan put together a list of five amazing New Orleans restaurants and we spent a day restaurant hopping, tasting at least two menu items and two drinks at each. That’s a great memory from wedding planning, but it’s also one of my all-time favorite memories of New Orleans. New Orleans will always be our special city. Did your fiancé help in the planning process? Honestly, our wedding was a total team effort. Our parents, siblings and friends all helped tremendously. Dan was in charge of the cake balls, the ceremony musician, the DJ, he took the lead on the reception and rehearsal dinner menus, and, most importantly, he kept me sane throughout the whole process. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without him. What was your first dance song? “The Way I Am” by Ingrid Michaelson. We’ve both loved Ingrid Michaelson’s music since we heard this song, which became popular around the time we started dating. This song describes one of our greatest strengths, that we accept each other as we are. I sing this song to my husband sometimes to remind him that I love him “more than I could promise”. At your reception, did you stay in heels or switch to flats? Flats! My mom had this idea for me months before the wedding, but I love the way my legs look in heels. I was worried about the appearance of my legs since my dress converted into a cocktail dress so I didn’t listen to her. Thank goodness my sister/maid of honor packed a pair of beautiful silver flats, which she let me borrow for the night because my feet were painfully swollen and red after the second line parade! What was your color scheme? Purple and silver: Dan and I both love shades of silver and gray, and purple tulips, suggested by my mom, inspired the purple. Our florist was even willing to use two large purple statement vases that we took from my mom’s living room for the freestanding arrangements during the ceremony. It was a big surprise for my mom and she loved it! “It was important for us to get married in New Orleans because hardly any of our family had been here before. We were so happy to share this city we love with all of our friends and family from out of town.” Venue: Riverview Room Makeup/Hair: Kiss & Makeup Beauty Services Photographer: Photo by Louis www. n o la we ddin g g u ide . c o m

Fallon Walker and Brandon Nicolosi April 20, 2013 How/When did you meet? We met in 2003 at UNO. It was my first year of college and his second. While at work, I realized that my friend at work knew these guys who went to UNO who knew some of the girls I had classes with. He told me that I had to meet them. So when I met them, Brandon did not say one word to me. LOL. He officially did not talk to me until a couple of weeks later, and then he came out of his shell and we had hit it off ever since. What was your favorite part of planning? My favorite part about planning was having my husband help. It really made for some wonderful moments through out the process. All of the laughs, faces, and sign language between each other was great! It really made the whole process fun and relaxing. Did your fiancé help in the planning process? He was the BEST fiancé ever helping with planning. He did everything but my dress shopping! LOL! What was your first dance song? Our first dance song was “Tangled Up in You” by Aaron Lewis. This was a special song for us. We have seen him in concert three times, and the first time we heard it, we both looked at each other, and knew this was our song. At your reception, did you stay in heels or switch to flats? LOL! I stayed in heels through the cake cutting. Then, the shoes came off, and I went barefoot! I never wear shoes, so it was true Fallon style! What was your color scheme? Our color scheme was blue and silver. It really matched the Aquarium and having the bridesmaids’ dresses in silver really made the night wedding elegant in Holy Name of Jesus church. “We were very blessed to be able to have our dream wedding with a unique location, in our home city of New Orleans, with all of our friends and family there to support us.” Church: Holy Name of Jesus Makeup: Flawless Bride Bridal Attire: Pearl’s Place Photographer: Stacy Marks Photography www. n o la we ddin g g u ide . c o m

[ glam is back!!! ]
by Kelly Massicot
How to Add Glamour to Your Wedding Day O
Invitations Only When beginning to plan the big day, there are a few areas of focus to get just the perfect amount of glam. Start with your invitations. This is the first view of the wedding that your guests will experience. Give them bold, statement colors with a hint of sparkle. Obviously, you want to make sure to pick a color that matches the colors of your big day. Black is a great accent color that provides drama and charm at the same time. Other luxury, emphasis colors include gold, silver, bronze and pewter. These colors enhance any color and can add in shimmer or shine. Don’t be afraid to embellish. Add a chandelier accent or some grand patterned borders that can be carried into your menu and place settings. Laser engraved invites are all the rage right now. Textured invites are hot. This combination is sure to get your guests ready for a magical night.
always help any room bring on the charm. You can keep it simple by just adding shimmery, gold detailing against a neutral base color or go full on adding large vase centerpieces with flowing flowers. Some brides are opting for 3 or 4 smaller centerpieces instead of 1 large one. This allows you to tie in different colored flowers that only adds glam. Keep a more vintage look by adding pearls or lace to centerpieces and table settings. Vintage pieces are easy to find and can be easy on your wallet. Opulent touches like pillar candlesticks, crystal napkin holders or sparkly chargers may be more than smaller vintage pieces, but will bring modern drama to the whole room. While there are countless party rental options that will bring these glam accents to you, there’s nothing better than a little personal touch. Bring down the cost of your decor by simply making the candlesticks, napkin holders, or other decor accessories yourself. This can be a fun do it yourself night with your bridesmaids, or a way to get your groom involved in the big day.
Venue While an invitation will get your guests through the door, location is key. Your venue and decor is what should wow the crowd. Lighting, structure, color, and furnishings all have to be perfect. Whether you’re going for new-aged glam at the W Hotel or Gatsby inspired elegance at the Ritz-Carlton, you can’t go wrong in New Orleans. Glam is all about over the top, dramatic elegance. Find a venue with a large ballroom or grand staircase to make your first entrance. You can also take the glam outdoors with whimsical tree lighting or the backdrop of an old New Orleans plantation. A beautiful chandelier can really glamorize an outdoor wedding, and can be hung above the bride and groom. You can also really spruce up a plain reception area by renting out oversized couches and chairs, thus creating intimate lounge seating areas away from the dance floor or food. Decor Once you have the right location, it’s all about the detail. Bringing in the right decor, like seating areas, will

ne of this year’s big new trends for weddings is a return to all out glamorous affairs. Minimalism has taken a backseat to sparkle, shine and sophistication thanks to the popularity of The Great Gatsby and TV shows like Downtown Abbey. The old opulence and luxury of the 1920’s has stepped back into the limelight, giving brides a reason to indulge in extravagant and over the top weddings. One misconception about weddings is that they must cost you an arm and a leg. You can have a glamorous wedding day that doesn’t have to break the bank, with a little know how.
Extras Tie all the elements of your venue and decor together with live music and great food. Bringing in a band will give your wedding a personal and more interactive touch. If they are a themed band, even better. Having swing music and a big horn section will go perfectly with your vintage theme or add class to a modern affair. Cocktail hours are a common trend among glamorous weddings. Have your waiters dress in bow ties and white coats and pass around cocktail style food to your guests before they are seated at your beautifully decorated main tables. Welch Phography
Lighting To accent your fabulous decor, just the right lighting is a glam must. Giving your wedding the right lighting can take a big ballroom and turn it into an A-list club or 1920’s speakeasy. For a vintage feel, have your guests arrive through a path of romantic candles. Continue your look throughout the venue including the tables and seating areas. For a more modern glam, bring in LED lights or use Gobo lighting to have your initials shining on the dance floor or wall. You can also change the look and feel of each part of your wedding with lighting. Have cocktail hour be a light, fun color, dinner a rich red, and dance the night away to a dark blue or purple, all matching your theme and wedding colors. This is easily accomplished with LED lighting and a light board.
FASHION Another key to tying a glam wedding together is attire. You want to make sure that you’re venue and decor are perfect, but the bride and groom must take center stage. Designers have added perfect styles, both dramatic and ‘20s simple, to fit in with the glam trend so that you can’t go wrong. Vintage is also about the lace. Columns and streamlined silhouettes with heavy embellishments were popular this season with all the designers. If a simple silhouette is more your style, give it a twist. Add sparkle or a dramatic back detail to wow guests as you walk down the aisle. For a current glam, focus on the architectural style of your dress. Bring bling into a dress with multiple layers and fabrics for a modern look. You can always add a headpiece and a flowy up-do, or long, romantic curls and a dramatic red lip to tie it all together.
Welch Phography
Once you are ready to go, adjacent to you must be your impeccably dressed bridesmaids. A huge trend for bridesmaids this wedding year has been long, flowing, and mismatched dresses. Long dresses are great for drama, but if short dresses are more your thing, have a neutral undertone and bring on the sparkle. Your friends will look great and be an amazing accent to you. For the men, nothing says sophistication like a three piece suit. This style has been the epitome of class across all generations and will have your guys looking as dashing as Jay Gatsby himself. Glam is mainly about the details. Put a little sparkle and drama into each area of your big day. Making sure that every element of your wedding ties together will make it a sophisticated celebration for you and your guests. From the table decor to the venue, plan a wedding Hollywood’s most glamorous would be jealous of.

[ pro tips on ceremony music ] very now and then, some honesty is necessary when it comes to wedding planning. As a former music director and professional opera singer, I have had the pleasure of working with wonderful couples, some with a clear idea of what music they wanted for their ceremony, some who had a general concept of what they liked but needed my guidance, and others who, bless their hearts, wanted their ceremony to be a cheesy love song concert. I enjoy a power ballad just as much as any girl, but when it comes to your wedding, you want timeless, spine-tingling expressions of love in your memories, not flashbacks of couples not quite making it to the lifeboats. The truth hurts less coming from me than your aunt at the reception.
Photography by Louis
Music at your wedding ceremony helps communicate the love of your vows, and it is essential that the music complement not only who you are as a couple, but also the setting of your ceremony. It is helpful for both you and your future spouse to come up with an idea of the tone (pun intended) your music will create. It can help you choose among wedding standards to decide which best fits you two and your celebration. The tone you choose can also help the musicians you collaborate with provide selections that that you may not be as familiar with, and are not as commonly heard at weddings, but are equally lush and beautiful. Here are some tips of things to listen and look for. Learn the rules of your ceremony venue. If you are being married in a church or synagogue, consult your wedding contract, their website, as well as their wedding coordinators, for guidelines that ensure your choices are appropriate. In some cases, the musicians are included with the wedding fee of the house of worship. Many have regulations regarding musicians and may require the use of their music ministry for weddings there. Most faiths see the witnessing of your marriage as a prayer that honors the solemnity of the vows and gives glory to God. Therefore, they will want to ensure that your music is beautiful, prayerful, and accessible to people present who share your faith traditions. With that in mind, the beauty of your music can truly make your ceremony a transcendent experience. Hire musicians. Ideally, you should have all your musicians hired and/or committed 6 months prior to your ceremony.

Often, it is more helpful to find musicians before you choose the music for your wedding. For one thing, your musicians can help you choose gorgeous and appropriate music, and create a beautiful arrangement (adaptation of a composition) for some portions of your ceremony if necessary; at the very least, you want to make sure your musicians are capable of playing or singing whatever you chose. Where will you find the musicians to lead your wedding music? If you’re getting married in your place of worship, the music director will be able to share available resources. Some couples invite musically talented family members or friends to perform at their ceremony. This has limits. Your Uncle Shimmy sang beautifully at your parents’ wedding in 1976 when he sang solo in the high school choir and says he can do the same on your big day. But you also know that 3 decades later, he hasn’t sung anywhere other than his shower. As much as you love him and that moment in your family history, you would be better served to work with loved ones who frequently perform at weddings. Demitasse Weddngs

If your venue does not provide them, I strongly recommend hiring professional musicians. That investment will keep your beautifully detailed ceremony from being diminished by a less than desired musical experience. Expect to pay: music schools don’t charge discount tuition. They can use your budget to determine the number of instruments you need, and will be able to troubleshoot any situation that may arise at your ceremony, without making any of your guests the wiser. If you go with the last two options, choose people who are already familiar with the structure of your ceremony and the music you may have in mind. They also should be knowledgeable regarding other parts of your ceremony that include music, such as sung prayers, liturgical seasons, the venue, as well as various genres of music. Ask your ceremony venue and/or your wedding planner for advice on professional musicians, visit wedding websites for suggestions, and ask family and friends who have been recently married for recommendations…if you were there and liked the music, you’ll like what you have at your wedding! Your soundtrack should reflect your personalities. Your musicians will be able to guide you some excellent re-
w w w .n ol a we ddin g g u ide . c o m
sources to listen to options for your ceremony, but make sure your selections reflect you. An example: if you are a bride with a more reserved temperament, choose a bridal entrance with instrumentation that makes you feel comfortable and beautiful. You probably would like to have a warm entrance featuring piano, strings, or an organ piece with string settings, rather than a bombastic, strong entrance to brass instruments. The same goes with your recessional music as a couple: would you like a jubilant or a more triumphal chord struck as you exit? If you two have a favorite hymn, incorporate it into your ceremony. If you are fans of a particular composer, you could feature only his or her music. Secular ceremonies also offer unique opportunities to include music that highlights who you are. Find a musical setting of a beloved poem. You could honor your parents or your cultural background/s with a particular music selection. Selecting music that is beautiful, personal and moving will make your day that much more memorable. Music is a part of our shared humanity and making selections and working with the right people will truly make every heart present at your ceremony sing. Aria M. Mason is a local opera singer, music minister, and wedding musician who has coordinated music at weddings in churches and courtyards alike. Learn more about her at www.ariamason.com.

[ wise bride ]
“Wise Bride” will be a recurring feature in the NOLA Wedding Guide, and includes helpful tips and advice from our “Wise Bride.”
Q: Is there a limit on the number of bridesmaids I can have? I am in a sorority and I want to include my closest sorority sisters, my friends from high school, my first cousins and of course, my four sisters. It’s getting close to fourteen total! Is this too many? - K. Manley, Baton Rouge, LA WB: This is a popular question. The number of bridesmaids in your wedding is solely up to you. It may add a little more stress to the coordination process, but it is your prerogative. Dress fittings, pictures, etc. may be slightly more complicated, simply due to the number of people involved. However, you do not have to have the same amount of groomsmen as bridesmaids. You may also have the bridal party sit in the front row at the ceremony instead of having them all standing around you on the altar. It will make for better photos. Q: My fiancé and I are older so we are paying for most of our wedding. We cannot afford to take a honeymoon and pay for the wedding at the same time, so we plan on saving some money and taking an anniversary trip. I want to see if you had any advice on what we could do for our wedding night. We still want it to be very special; we just don’t want to spend a fortune on it. - M. Barmes Metairie, LA WB: Many couples delay their honeymoon for various reasons. As far as the wedding night, check with the hotels around New Orleans and see what kind of deals they have for wedding night brides. Another idea would be renting a French Quarter condo for the weekend. As long as it’s not a holiday weekend, you should be able to find some great rates. Be a tourist in New Orleans! You can spend an entire weekend in one of the greatest cities in the world and not even have to travel there. In my opinion, it is a perfect way to spend your first weekend as husband and wife.
Q: My fiancé is from the Northeast and I am from Lafayette. He wants to use time at our reception to have toasts from our family members like they do up north. I tried to explain that we are having a three-hour reception and that the speeches will take away from our party time. He is insistent but so am I. What should I do? - A. LaPayne, Lafayette, LA WB: Compromise. Learning that art will not only help you in this situation, but others, as you become husband and wife. Ask him to allow the speeches to take place at the rehearsal dinner. Rehearsal dinners usually run two to three hours so that allows ample time. Should he still insist on speeches at the reception, knock it down to just the maid of honor and best man, or just the parents. Schedule the speeches right after the cake cutting and preceding the last hour of full on party mode at the reception. Q: My reception venue does not have a full time on site coordinator. I really do not have the money for a coordinator, but I don’t trust that everything will run smoothly either. Any advice? - C. Greisham, Picayune, MS WB: There are many great day-of coordinators out there. Do some research by looking in magazines and searching the web for local wedding coordinators. The day -of coordination is obviously less expensive so that will help you financially. If you still can’t swing the bill, ask a friend to be in charge of your timeline. She/he can help alleviate a lot of your stress by simply reminding you about certain important parts of the ceremony and reception at the appropriate times.
WB: Relax! There are many great wedding hair stylists and makeup artists out there. Just look in the beauty section of the NOLA Wedding Guide. These fine vendors will be happy to schedule run throughs with you to get exactly what you are looking for. Research some pictures of hairstyles and makeup applications that you like in magazines and on the internet, prior to seeing your potential hairstylist/makeup artist. Bring these with you and it will make the whole process easier. It will help the stylist to better understand what you are shooting for.

[ wedding pictures ] Y
our wedding pictures are a way to relive the special moments of your wedding day for years to come. When your photographer gives you the finished pictures and it is time to get them printed, you have an important decision to make: you can either get them printed at a drugstore/discount department store or you can have them processed by a professional lab. Though the drugstores may have slightly cheaper prices, the professional lab has the more experienced staff that is dedicated solely to the printing of images. The professional labs do not have seasonal employees who get limited training. They also do not sell anything else other than photo processing. Primary Digital Imaging is a local imaging lab based in Kenner. They work with most of the professional wedding photographers in the city and have been in business for over 50 years. They are committed to providing the highest quality, color photographic services, along with dependable delivery and outstanding customer service. Robbie Holland, with Primary, says, “Your wedding is one of the biggest events in your life. You hired many professionals to make the event as special as possible. As a professional lab, we are making sure that you get the very best quality from your images. This is our primary focus. We are not a store with a lab in the back. Our equipment is state-of-the-art and our staff is fully trained to make sure that the images are printed correctly. Your photographer took extensive time to edit your images, giving you the very best. Therefore, you should make sure that those images are of the highest standard.

Louisiana Couple Goes Viral!
R
ecently, when Facebook users clicked on their newsfeed, many saw that their friends were sharing a particular wedding photo that had gone viral. The photo showed a wedding party running in an open grass field towards their photographer. What was particularly odd and striking about the picture was that they were running for their lives from a Tyrannosaurs Rex! Katie and James Lowder, the bride and groom, were made famous overnight for the picture, along with their photographer, Quinn Miller of Quinn Miller Photo + Design. Quinn is a senior at LSU in Baton Rouge majoring in Digital Art and has known James for three years. Quinn said that he saw a similar idea on Facebook and thought James and Katie would be the ideal couple to try something just as daring. After texting the couple the original concept photo, they were in!

Quinn said that the famous photo took place after the ceremony, immediately following the group shots of the wedding party. He instructed everyone to run at the camera as if a giant dinosaur was chasing them. “I told them they had to go all out for it to be successful, and that’s exactly what they did,” said Quinn. ”Without them selling the idea the way they did, the photo

wouldn’t have been successful at all.” The bridal party performed superbly and the shot was done in no time. Quinn spent only 20 minutes to edit the photo and then posted it on his Facebook page, thinking it would just be a fun thing for Katie and James and their friends to view. What he didn’t expect was that in just over a week from posting the photo, Quinn’s page went from 250 likes to 6,000, and the photo received over 1.25 million views! Today, the photo has 11,220 shares and 13,740 likes! The photo has also been featured on Good Morning America, The Today Show, Fox News, CNN, Huffington Post, BBC, USA Today, People Magazine and E! News. Congratulations to our fellow Louisianans, Katie and James Lowder and Quinn Miller for their great sense of humor and daring. It is refreshing to see someone having such a great time at their wedding and not being afraid to let their hair down a bit. Hopefully, this may spark some other courageous couples to think outside of the box for their own wedding photos. We can’t wait to see what will go viral next!

[ top 15 wedding trends of today ]
By Troy Marks
Are You Missing Out? I
t’s out with the old and in with the new. Weddings have become huge events with no detail spared the obsessive examination of today’s discerning bride. With more and more sources of inspiration from which to draw, brides are incorporating ideas from a variety of sources to truly have unique and inspiring weddings that reflect their distinct personality and taste. It is a beautiful and wondrous thing! We would like to share with you our research that shows what’s hot in the wedding industry this year. 1. Return to Glamour As the economy has improved, weddings have become more glamorous with over the top décor and opulence ruling the day. Beautiful place settings with fine china, linens, centerpieces and lighting have all returned to glamour and excess. If it’s worth doing, it’s worth overdoing! 2. Fun Is In Bridal party dances have become interactive showpieces that often have the whole reception howling. Interactive speeches, video presentations and crazily posed photographs have grown to entertaining levels that add to the uniqueness of each particular wedding. Photo booths and props will also bring the whole celebration to another level, and have your guests talking for years to come. 3. Modern Vintage The Roaring Twenties is back. The overwhelming popularity of the Great Gatsby movie this May has led to a return of the sophistication and modernity of this golden age. Brides have reflected this by incorporating vintage items such as sequined linens, Prohibition-era cocktails, romantic flowers and vintage headpieces to their weddings. Props are in as well.

4. Go Green or Orange or Blue Wedding design boards are bursting at the seams with different shades of green. Mint, chartreuse and emerald are all the rage and are being incorporated into linens, stationary and cakes. Bright orange and royal blue is another hot color combination that presents a bold, dramatic look. 5. What’s behind the Dress Wedding dresses in 2013 show more variety and flair than ever. We have seen colorful dresses; short dresses and more recently dresses with pockets! Expect tea length dresses, soft necklines and demure straps to take the place of the strapless dresses of 2012. Beautiful backs were also very prominent in the latest bridal collections. Whether it was jeweled, embellished, a lace back or a totally open back, the back is back! 6. Tasting Menus Small, stylish displays of food will outpace the usual cattle like buffet. Presentation and smaller portions will appeal to your guests as long as the food is continually replenished. Design the area in a unique and appealing way. Have fun with it! 7. Lounging Around Nice, comfortable lounge areas have become ubiquitous at most weddings. Set indoors or outdoors, stylish, comfortable sofas provide an air of elegance and a welcomed respite to your wedding guests. 8. Flickering Although candles have been a part of weddings seemingly forever, they are being incorporated in more custom ways than ever. Whether they are smaller candles put in mason jars and hung from the ceiling or elegant candles flickering gloriously in a beautiful chandelier, the light that they radiate will undoubtedly shine on you!

9. Save-the-Dates Another increasingly popular trend is having creative and fun save-the-dates or invitations. Posing for pictures with props, such as a chalkboard or wooden numbers, showcases a couple’s wedding date in a fun way. Magnets or pop-outs are also popular, while others use interesting fonts or formats in lieu of a picture. Gone are the standard, formal, fancy wedding invitations of yesteryear. Today’s couple is seeking out fun and creative ways to notify friends and family of their upcoming nuptials. 10. Styling Grooms Look out brides! Grooms are taking more interest in the style department than ever. Departing from the usual black tux, grooms are rocking bespoke suits, plaid shirts and vibrant bowties. Don’t be upstaged girls; bring that style down the aisle! 11. Let Them Eat Cake Wedding cake designs continue to evolve, and are getting brighter and bolder. Wedding cakes of 2013 have to make a statement. Ruffled and frilled fondant is being used to make beautifully elegant textures that really pop. Hand painted wedding cakes allow a level of personalization that will amaze your guests. 12. Signature Cocktails Couples are teaming with their reception locale to create a refreshing signature cocktail for their wedding day. Often using flavored spirits such as apple or cherry vodka, these cocktails add to the unique experience that today’s wedding couples are striving for. 13. Charity Begins At Home With some couples choosing to marry later in life, they are often more financially established. In lieu of receiving traditional wedding gifts, many couples are instead requesting donations to their favorite charity. Websites such as, www.idofoundation.org, make the process easier and allow you to choose the charity of your choice. Although it may be hard to give up those gifts, the blessings you receive will outweigh the gifts forever. What a wonderful way to begin your new life together.
14. Send Them Home Happy (and full) The wedding favor keychain with the smiling couple is as dead as 80’s hair metal. These days, if it’s not edible, forget it. Candy buffet tables, where the guests can fill up a small bag to take home are all the rage. A nice praline or local dessert will take the place of the next day brunch. Feed them on the way out the door! 15. Uniqueness Putting your own stamp on and breaking with tradition on your wedding day is totally cool. Rather than using flowers as a cake topper, how about life-like bobble head dolls? Instead of monogramming your initials inside of his ring, how about stamping your thumbprint? Be creative. It’s your day, have it your way!

Why Printing Your Wedding Photos is Essential T
he other day, I had a chance to flip through my parents’ wedding album. I’ve looked through their album dozens of times. Dad looked like a young Elvis and Mom was a brunette. They have 20 professional 8x10 photos in their wedding album. I’ve seen those photographs dozens of times because they are in an album on display. It’s an album that was made by a professional photographer, filled with prints made through a professional lab, and bound in an album available only to professionals. There is a very good reason people spend so much time, effort, and money on weddings. Weddings are a celebration of a couples’ love shared with family and friends. A wedding is truly an event that brings people together. Guests often travel from other states and on occasion from other countries. How often do we get to enjoy such joyous events? Not often enough. These days many couples are opting for wedding photography packages, which only offer the high-resolution images on a disc with royalty free printing rights. They do not buy prints or a custom designed professional wedding album. This is a great option for those on a very tight wedding budget. However, there are some drawbacks that you should be aware of. Will the Technology Still Exist Consider this, will the computers of 2063 even have DVD drives? USB ports? Will they even have hard drives at all? If the past is any indication, the answer is no. When my parents were married, the biggest technological advancement was 8 track tape players. What if their wedding photos were stored on the equivalent of that? How in the world would I see those images today?
reason. They are custom designed, usually leatherbound, and made just for you. If you can afford it, you should consider an heirloom quality album. It should be designed with images printed on archival quality paper and bound to matte board pages. If you are unable to afford it when you first get married, possibly make it a 1 year anniversary gift to yourselves. It’s really never too late. These photos will live on for future generations to enjoy.
Don’t get me wrong; I do think that getting all the images from your wedding day is great. Today’s couples get up to 1,000+ images from their wedding day. That’s a lot more images than my parents had. Sometimes, I wonder what happened to all of those other images from my parents’ wedding day that were not used in their album.
Family Heirlooms So, figure out a way to make it happen. Find a way to afford those prints and the custom album. Don’t do it just for yourself. Do it for your children and grandchildren. Because when they root around in the top of your closet in 2063, they will have no idea what to do with a USB stick anymore than they would a plastic disc.
The negatives probably sat in a box, at their photographer’s studio until they went out of business. Those images never saw the light of day again. So I think it’s wonderful that couples get all of their wedding images on a disc. However, real photographs never become obsolete or go out of style. Not just any photographs but professional photographs printed by a professional lab. Unfortunately, all prints are not the same.

Wedding Albums Since you cared enough about these special moments to hire a professional to photograph them, follow that through by having a professional print them and design a high-quality wedding album that you and your family will cherish for decades. The best way to preserve your photographs is in an album. This allows for “dark storage” in a nice package that you will be proud to have on display. I know that albums can sometimes get expensive but that’s not without good www. n o la we ddin g g u ide . c o m

Outdoor Wedding Ceremony Almanac I
n New Orleans, outdoor ceremonies are as common as roast beef poboys. Our subtropical climate keeps our weather pleasant year round and contributes to making our city an ideal backdrop for your special day. However, an outdoor ceremony can sometimes be tricky to plan. Knowing some basic information, such as which months are the rainiest, the average temperature for each month, and what time the sun sets, may mean the difference in planning for a spring wedding or holding off until the fall to get your ideal climate conditions. Also, knowing the sunset times can be crucial for getting your wedding photos just right. We have put together a 2013 almanac to assist you in planning your outdoor wedding ceremony.

[ finding the ART in your bridal party ]
ByAria M. Mason
Making the Most of Your Support Team
C
ongratulations! You’ve chosen a wedding date, a venue, and the song for your first dance. You’ve asked your closest friends and family to stand up with you and support you through the months leading up to your big day. Your bridal party is there to not only celebrate this milestone in your life, but also to be a sounding board for your ideas for your ceremony and reception. Ideally, they could assist tremendously if you utilize them for their gifts, and develop the A.R.T. of having them do so. Remember these three key phrases as you go about creating a beautiful wedding. Ask for help. The first step is recognizing that you can’t do everything yourselves. Reach out to your bridesmaids and groomsmen and explain to them your current planning needs. Even if everyone can’t pitch in at the same level, they should be eager to find a way to assist you beyond what is prescribed based on your honesty. Don’t be afraid to request their support and keep them in the loop on the latest in getting your nuptials on track. One way to allow your team to support your needs is to help them get to know each other as soon as possible. Send out an email with all their contact information. A group outing for drinks, dinner or bowling can turn into a great opportunity to connect and bond, which will provide you with a stronger support network. Often, bridal parties don’t live in the same town, so set up a Google hangout or a Skype session so everyone can say hello and potentially discuss any information you sent out on your needs. Involve your maid of honor and best man in creating Pinterest boards of all the looks and styles you have planned. Their collaboration and your communication with them will be vital to getting everything you have planned off the ground and maybe, when they get to know one another, create some surprises for one or the both of you as well. Recognize the talent! Has your best man hosted conferences at hotels? He can make some catering suggestions for your reception. A bridesmaid is a CPA? Ask her to look over your wedding budget to help you stay on target with your expenses. Your maid of honor is a stage manager at her community’s local theater? She may be able to help you time out the logistics of the wedding day into a document you can share with everyone. The point is, everyone in your bridal party is bringing a skill, talent, or connection to the table. Sometimes, it’s not one that they even realize they can share in a meaningful way, but you or your fiancée knows them well enough to be able to think of little but significant ways they can aid you in a better event. Utilize their expertise and make sure that you honor the information or resources they provide you with by using them responsibly. That could mean leaving that part of your

wedding- be it flowers, music, or transportation- in their hands and only checking in on that part periodically; every two weeks, request an update: once a month if your wedding is 12+ months away. Additionally, if you’re using their professional connection to obtain a service for your rehearsal, wedding or honeymoon, do your best to follow up in a timely way and ensure you preserve their relationship with respect, forethought and gratitude. Shower them and their “hook-up” with affection and thanks. Also, delegate responsibly. Don’t assign any more than two people to one task and make sure to remember that although they are helping you, they have their own lives and responsibilities. Their talent also has limits: don’t create unrealistic expectations or timetables for them to provide you with support or resources. You want to have a closer relationship with your bridal party after your wedding than before it. Take a step back. You’ve shared your needs and put pieces of your most important event in the hands of your attendants, communicated the odds and ends

about all the big and little details, and everything is in place. Now, it’s 48 hours before your wedding day. If you’ve put everything together well, you will be able to turn everything over to your best man and maid of honor and let them be in charge. Yes, you have to let THEM be in charge. As a 3-time maid of honor and 6-time bridesmaid with a very well stocked bridal emergency kit, I can assert that it makes your wedding less stressful by letting the control go. Their taking the reins allows you more time to spend with out of town guests, your parents, and your future spouse, and also to just plain relax. Your job now is to enjoy the beauty of watching all your planning unfold and savor all the memories. Don’t miss the opportunity to live in the moment! When you have made the best use of your bridal party, you are able to get more out of your wedding experience and also create a closer, more meaningful bond with people who you have chosen to share in this incredible time in your life. [ second line parade ]
Atelier NOLA photography
If you want a traditional New Orleans wedding, you want to hire a brass band for a Second Line Parade. It is a way of expressing the unique local flavor of the city. The Second Line is the parade of people following the musicians, who are called the “First Line”. The sounds of the instruments (trumpet, tuba, trombone, sax, banjo and clarinet) are coupled with a snare and bass drum. A Grand Marshal will lead your wedding guests around a French Quarter block announcing and celebrating your event. These parades began back in the 19th century, with organizations advertising for burials and honoring the deceased all in one announcement. Many newlyweds can be seen with their umbrellas, white for the bride, black for the groom, and their guests holding handkerchiefs as they follow the band. For more information on booking a second line band, call Stu at the Howlin’ Wolf, 504-522-9653.
