PLANNING

2016 OUTDOOR WEDDING Almanac In New Orleans, outdoor ceremonies are as common as roast beef poboys. Our sub tropical climate keeps our weather pleasant year round and contributes to making our city an ideal backdrop for your special day. However, an outdoor ceremony can sometimes be tricky to plan. Knowing some basic information such as which months are the rainiest, the average temperature for each month and what time the sun sets, may mean the difference in planning for a spring wedding or holding off until the fall to get your ideal climate conditions. Also, knowing the sunset times can be crucial for getting your wedding photos just right. We have put together an almanac to assist you in planning your outdoor wedding ceremony.

PLANNING

When you apply for your marriage license, at least one party must appear in person. He or she must have all the necessary information and documents outlined below.

1.

State law requires a certified copy of each party’s birth certificate, if born in Louisiana. Passports are not acceptable. If either party was born out-of-state, a waiver can be submitted. If either party was born out-of-country, a valid passport, naturalization papers, or green card, along with a valid state ID card or driver’s license must be presented at the office, and to a judge to obtain a waiver.

2. If either party is divorced, he/she must present a certified copy of the final divorce decree. 3. If either party is widowed, he/she must present a certified copy of a death certificate. 4. Each party must know his/her social security number, but no documentation is required. 5. Both bride and groom will need to complete a marriage license application; forms can be presented by either applicant in person.

14

nola wedding guide

www. n o l a we d d i n g g u i d e. co m

Age Requirements If either applicant is under 18 years of age, but more than 16, the marriage is lawful and a license may be issued if the applicants provide: written consent of both parents (or custodian), or an order from a judge or juvenile court. In the event the applicant is under 16, all the above three things will be required.

General Information A Louisiana license is valid in any parish in Louisiana for 30 days. There is a 72-hour waiting period between the time of issuance and the ceremony. Only a district judge or Justice of the Peace can waive this. Newlyweds should order a certified copy of their marriage license two weeks after the marriage to ensure that the license has been returned and recorded.by Louis Photography

rep u b li c nola Located in a historic warehouse, Republic’s vintage brick walls and exposed wooden beams, that have been largely unchanged since the building was erected over 160 years ago, ensure an authentic space that’s overflowing with New Orleans charm. Long ago, art deco murals and crystal chandeliers were added to enhance the natural beauty of the space, but the venue didn’t reach its full potential until an ownership change and comprehensive renovation that culminated in Republic’s 10 Year Anniversary in December 2015. These renovations took special care to maintain the history and inherent beauty of the space, while modernizing the facility with brand new bars, bathrooms, furnishings, sound & lighting systems, and video capabilities. This juxtaposition of rich history and modern amenities is at the core of every event at the All New Republic NOLA. While Republic NOLA in widely known for producing some of the best regional and national concerts, the venue has seen a significant increase in wedding business over the last 4 years—a fact that new owner, Nick Thomas, took into heavy consideration when developing the renovation plans. He worked with Director of Special Events, Jessica Talazac, to make specific upgrades that appeal to the dual functionality of the space as both a private event facility and a live music venue. The authenticity of the historic space was essential to design decisions with classic subway tile backsplashes, antique copper rails and accents, and reclaimed barge-board shelving at the freshly-rebuilt bars. The team turned to local antique/thrift shops for décor items to curate a space with true vintage integrity, like a typewriter from 1945 and early-edition leather books from the turn of the century. For furnishings, a combination of chocolate brown leather tufted sofas and church-pew-esque

bench seating are highly versatile, seamlessly transitioning from lounge to banquet table seating, and can be easily moved to create a custom floor plan based on any event’s needs. The venue was further refined by removing all exposed wiring from the ceiling, adding a scented oil diffusion system with custom scent, and installing dimmable light fixtures with filament bulbs both inside and in front of the venue to provide just the right amount of light for any application. Though the aesthetic of the space may be vintage, Republic NOLA’s renovations included an extensive tech upgrade with a brand-new video system that has the ability to live-feed what’s happening on stage to TVs/screens above all 3 bars. One of the leading sound system manufacturers in the world, D.A.S. Audio, custom designed a line-array system for the venue, and more LED and moving lights have been added throughout the space. Republic NOLA has always been a beautiful venue, but this renovation has taken it to the next level, especially for weddings and private events. They’ve managed to carefully refine and elevate the vintage character, increase functionality, and provide even more versatility; in sum, Republic NOLA is now the ideal wedding venue for couples seeking a unique setting for their reception, ceremony, rehearsal dinner, and/ or engagement party. Through the myriad of facility changes, the team at Republic NOLA remains fully committed to the core ideals of personalized service, versatility, and creativity for each and every event. Rest assured that Republic’s team of professionals will go the extra mile to create the perfect day for couples and their families.

K Patrick and I met briefly through a mutual friend of ours. Our mutual friend asked me to come see a show that he designed, and Patrick happened to be the director. I immediately liked Patrick. A couple weeks later, I received a text from him asking if I would meet him for drinks. I thought it was a date, but it turned out he just wanted to ask me to design his next show. Even so, Patrick and I had a connection. It was during that time that we worked on the show together, that we actually started dating.

We met up to see the exhibits at The Art Institute of Chicago. After leaving the museum, we went for a walk in Millennium Park. It was freezing outside, but the lights in the park and city were so beautiful that night. We wandered into a place called the Lurie Garden. It was quiet, and the view was gorgeous. We were the only ones in the garden. Patrick got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife.

Wedding planning was a little tricky at times. Patrick and I live in Chicago, but we knew we wanted to get married in New Orleans. I was only able to go down to New Orleans maybe twice before the wedding to help pick out a few things. My parents were the ones that visited the Pharmacy Museum and Muriels, and I was able to see the venues via FaceTime. I knew right away I wanted to hire Brian Jarreau as our photographer. His work is incredible, so there was no question about it.

I think for the both of us, having all of our family and friends together in one place was the best part of the wedding. It just made the day so special for both of us, and we couldn’t be happier they were all there to share in our moment.

The second line was incredible. We never expected it to be as fun as it was. The amount of people that lined the streets was unbelievable. We ran into strangers over the next few days that said they recognized us, and they had videos of our second line. In addition to that, my dad and I planned a surprise choreographed Father/Daughter dance that gave our families a laugh. I had a dancer friend of mine choreograph something for us, and we learned it 3 days before the wedding. I’m just glad I made it through that!

F E AT U R E D C O U P L E

We love to feature real couples as much as we can in the Nola Wedding Guide. Their stories and ideas serve as inspiration to our readers, and we also enjoy hearing all about their love and wedding planning experiences. One of the most popular ways to tell these stores is through our Featured Couple Facebook Contest. Since we started the contest a few years ago it has grown into a much anticipated and highly coveted staple for each issue. This issue’s winners of our Featured Couple contest are Chelsea Becnel and Gavin Pitre. Their wedding will be on October 22, 2016, and we are happy to share their love story and wedding plans. NWG: How did you meet? Chelsea: The only explanation is fate. When Gavin switched high schools, my best friend met him at a party and knew we would be perfect together. Never in a million years would I have met Gavin if he wouldn’t have switched schools and been at that party. Props to our matchmakers! Gavin: In our junior year of high school, we were paired together by our good friends, Lacey & Stephen Cheralla, who are now married to each other. They told me how we would be good together. They gave me Chelsea’s number and we started chatting. Actually, the first thing I ever said to her was, “Hey, this is Gavin. Will you marry me?”

NWG: Describe your first date. Chelsea: Our first date was at a movie theatre. I remember seeing him jump up and down in line for the tickets, so I could easily pick him out of the crowd. We awkwardly watched Juno in silence and then went to Café Du Monde. It was cold that night, so as I was quickly putting on my jacket, I accidently hit him in the cheek! Gavin: A few days after we started talking, we went to AMC in Elmwood on a double date. After the movie was over, I helped her put her jacket back on, and she punched me pretty hard in the face. I’m pretty sure she was thinking she had ruined it for us, but it helped lighten the mood a bit. We got a good laugh out of it and finished the evening off with beignets. NWG: Describe your courtship. Chelsea: Gavin and I dated for over 7 years until we got engaged. We lived an hour away from each other over those years. The majority of our relationship consisted of phone calls, text messages, and waiting for the weekend to come so we could spend time together. Gavin: I knew pretty early into our relationship that I was going to marry this woman. As a result of our relationship being long distance, we always cherished the time that we spent together, no matter how long or short the visit. I truly believe that ‘absence makes the heart grow fonder,’ and the distance that separated us actually solidified our relationship. w w w . n o l aw ed d i n g g u i d e. co m

NWG: How did he propose? Chelsea: I do not like surprises, and I typically find out everything before it happens. Gavin and I were on a vacation in Gatlinburg, TN with our two best friends. We hiked up my favorite trail in the Great Smokey Mountains - Grotto Falls. Once at the top, while posing for a picture on a rock in front of a breathtaking waterfall, Gavin asked me to marry him! My friends were there to video and everyone around the waterfall witnessed him surprise me! Well planned Gav, very well planned. Gavin: We took a hike to Grotto Falls on our first morning of the trip. At the top of the trail is a beautiful waterfall, and it was there that I dropped to one knee and proposed. She says she knew it was going to happen on the trip, but her reaction in the pictures and videos says otherwise! NWG: How has the planning gone so far? Chelsea: The planning has been surprisingly stress-free! Gavin loves to come to the planning meetings and be involved in the emails, which I love! It comes naturally to me to plan, but I never make a decision without Gav. When we are faced with a decision, the question we ask ourselves is “what reminds you of us more?” and that’s usually what we decide on. Gavin: It’s been an emotional experience thus far. There’s been plenty of happiness, a little bit of sadness, and good bit of stress. Luckily, we’ve had plenty of help from our family and friends, which has allowed us to continue to enjoy the planning

process. We’re currently on the most exciting part…planning our honeymoon to Europe! NWG: Tell us about some of your wedding vendors. Chelsea: We are getting married in the church I grew up in, St. Charles Borromeo. Following that we will have our reception at The Balcony Ballroom. Our amazing photographer is Studio Tran. We have a live band from New Orleans: Papa C and the Slammin’ Horns. Our florist is the lovely Crystal Vase. I got my wedding dress and bridesmaids’ dresses from Blanc Bridal! Gavin: I’m pleased with our selections. I haven’t chosen my tailor for our suits yet…so stay tuned! NWG: Any advice for future couples? Chelsea: New Orleans is a beautiful city with many options to plan your perfect wedding! Planning a wedding takes time, patience, and should be fun! Make your wedding your own; make it remind you of your own love story. Gavin: Communication. Respect. Love. It’s important to keep the communication flowing both ways, for both good and bad news. Most importantly, continue to fall in love with each other every day. Make sure that you show it and say it often. These values have supported our relationship from the beginning. Has it been easy to uphold these values? No. Like anything, it takes work, but it is definitely worth it. I truly love Chelsea, and I’m thankful she’s in my life.

ADVICE

W i sb er i d e Do I need a wedding planner?

Q

When planning a wedding, is it a good idea to budget for a planner/day of coordinator? ~ Marie Longhall, New Orleans, La.

A

Registry on invitation

Q

Do you list where you are registered on your invites? ~ Madelyn Breaux, Destrehan, La.

Not everyone needs a planner for their wedding, but if you are able to budget in - at least - the day of coordination, you will not regret it! There are so many little details that need to happen when planning a wedding, so many things you could accidently forget. Why not take the stress off of yourself for once? Give your closest family and friends a break! This is a day you will enjoy and talk about for the rest of your life. Having a planner would definitely make things run smoother.

Absolutely not! No information regarding your registry should be listed on invitations. This gives the impression that the gift is worth more than the guest, which is definitely something you don’t want to portray! Have your friends or close family members help spread the word among the guests.

Uneven bridal party

Too many parties?

Q

Q

My family is rather small and I only have my sister as my maid of honor. My fiancé on the other hand has two brothers and also many close friends he wants to ask to be groomsmen. Is it okay if our parties are uneven? ~ Anna Stice, Houma, La.

A

Having the same amount of people on each side was never a mandatory rule. Not every party is going to be perfectly matched. The best way to handle this situation, and not make it so terribly obvious, is to have one bridesmaid be escorted by

72

two groomsmen, or you could just simply have each person in your party walk down alone.

How many parties am I allowed when planning my wedding? I don’t want to seem like I am overdoing it, but can I honestly turn down parties my family and friends want to throw for me?? ~ Jessica Richard, Slidell, La.

A

You are allowed all the parties that are being thrown for you! This is your wedding! It’s time to celebrate! However, don’t think you should expect gifts for each shower, luncheon, etc.

J Kelly and I met the summer before sophomore year of high school. My best man, GJ Raymond, introduced us. We attended prom together, and we stayed friends throughout high school. We stayed in touch sporadically throughout college, calling one another to catch up. Our high school reunions were on the same night and I ran into Kelly out on the patio. Before long, we ducked off into the side bar to grab a drink and catch up. Before we knew it, it was 4 am and everyone else was long gone.

Kelly and I went out to eat at MiLa. Kelly had actually planned the dinner. She had no idea that I had planned the rest of the evening as a surprise. I arranged for both of our families to be waiting at the Sazerac Bar in the Roosevelt Hotel down the street so we could celebrate with them after I proposed. I thought she was going to figure me out when I barely ate my food and I didn’t finish my bourbon. While walking out, knowing I had to ask the question before we reached the bar, I gathered up my nerves and courage, took a deep breathe and popped the question. Kelly was so ecstatic. She wanted to call our parents right away. I told her they were already waiting at The Roosevelt.

The wedding planning went great. Kelly had most of it planned out in her head already. Within 2 weeks of the proposal we already had a church, reception venue, band, catering, and wedding party picked out and set.

My favorite part of the wedding was our first dance. It was to Earth Angel by Marvin Berry and the Starlighters. It’s from our favorite movie, Back to the Future. The first dance was the first time we got to catch our breath and just enjoy the moment.

Everyone danced all night. There was never a lull, never a break. Groovy 7 rocked the house all night and we couldn’t have asked for a better time.

In the words of Tracee Dundas, fashion is a world of illusion and glamour that is ever evolving, and ranges from the conservative to the avant garde. New Orleans has always had a distinct fashion presence that can be seen throughout the city. The fact is New Orleans fashion encompasses a wide array of styles that is clearly influenced by our cultural, southern charm and way of life. New Orleans Fashion Week’s goal is to continue to build and support our southern fashion industry while giving southern native/ based designers a platform to showcase their amazing talent.

This year’s event was held at the Board of Trade and the electricity in the room was palpable as the models walked the runway. The packed crowd was breathless and vocal as each designer showcased their latest fashions. A great sound system and intelligent lighting added to the feel of total glamour and electricity as the runway sparkled with beautiful designs. A Style Lounge, located in the beautiful courtyard of the Board of Trade, allowed vendors and sponsors to showcase their wares and made for a great entrance to the festivities. We would like to thank everyone at New Orleans Fashion Week 2016 for inviting the Nola Wedding Guide to cover this exquisite event. See you next year!

Dress to Impress

PLANNING

The thing that makes the Ball Gown Wedding Dress, a.k.a, the “Fairy-Tale wedding gown” a truly idyllic style is its flattering adherence to practically any body type. Usually matched with fitted bodices, these dresses flare out from the hips, providing just the right amount of sensational and over-the-top glamour. A fitted waist works best for this design, and petite body types may find these dresses a bit overpowering for their small frames. However, if high drama and spellbinding impact are what you’re striving for on the big day, you can’t go wrong with this dress!

82

nola wedding guide

www. n o l a we d d i n g g u i d e. co m

The Modified A-Line features a skirt that slips lightly past the hips and gradually flares to the hem, forming an “A shape. Slightly less forgiving than the A-Line Wedding dress-which flatters most body types-the modified A-line fits more snugly against the body. Petite women love this dress because of its elongating qualities and ultimate figure flattery!

The Trumpet Gown, like the Mermaid, hugs the body and really emphasizes the shape. However, the Trumpet dress is easier to walk in as it is slightly fuller and flares higher on the leg. If you’re not the most graceful of brides but still want the sleek, sexy look that the mermaid gown provides, the trumpet gown is your best option.

PLANNING

The Sheath Gown is made to fit close to the body, with little accoutrement. Usually falling to just around the knees or lower thighs, this gown is especially great for summer weddings, but can also be great for the fall. Its basic column-like design makes it easy to dress up or down and accessories like satin sashes can be easily added to cinch the waist and accentuate most figures.

The Mermaid is snugly fit through the bodice, down through the hips, all the way to the knees before flaring out at about the mid or lower calf. This curve-hugging gown is certain to show off all the right parts of the female form. Hourglass figures or women with athletic, boyish body types will love this dress, but petite women may find that it makes them appear shorter. If you are fit but buxom, this sexy gown is for you!

Are Ki ds at We d d i n g s a Go o d I dea? by Sarah Peneguy

Some people believe that kids at a wedding are a huge inconvenience and having them around for the festivities tends to end in disaster. On the other hand, some love to have their kids with them to help celebrate the day, and consider it a blessing to have children around. If you are trying to find the right balance for having kids attend the wedding, here are few suggestions for you to follow. WHO RUNS THE SHOW: If you’re concerned about children taking over your wedding, screaming, running and eating all that delicious wedding cake, the best thing to do is to limit the amount of children allowed to attend. Just invite the ones in your immediate family and the ones who will actually be in the ceremony! If parents start giving you grief about why their children aren’t invited, just explain to them you’re trying to keep the guest list down and it is your wish to have an adult only wedding. Remember they’re not the one running the show – you are. DISTRACTION IS KEY: Keeping the kids entertained at the reception is one of the simplest things to do! Try having a kid’s table set up in the corner, or a separate room if your venue allows it. Add in some board games, some kid-friendly movies,

86

nola wedding guide

www. n o l a we d d i n g g u i d e. co m

or even possibly an XBOX. This way the tiny humans won’t become bored after thirty minutes of being there! In addition, having a fun kid-type food section at the reception is great at keeping them at ease and not so cranky. For example, macaroni and cheese, French fries, or chicken nuggets will go a long way in making a child happy and content. BE EVER WATCHFUL: Even though distractions help to keep those adorable gremlins from tearing down the walls, it’s also a good idea to have someone constantly watching them! Make sure to have a chaperone throughout the night, maybe even have some people take shifts. Another idea would be to ask the parents to keep an eye on their children during the reception. Tell them not to wander too far. However, the most important advice is to let them have a little bit of fun! Be patient with them; they’re only trying to have a good time. Kids are great surprises to have at events! Try not to be so cynical about it; try to let loose and have fun with them. Laugh along with them, and be extra sure to take them out on the dance floor! They have a way of lightening the mood and making things much more magical.

It’s no big secret that women love shoes! Shoes are an intimate extension of the body and seem to say so much about a woman’s attitude, aesthetics, sexuality and social status. Clothing, when not worn, just lies there flat and lifeless, but shoes seem to have an autonomous quality, which may somewhat explain our obsession. We have partnered with two of our favorite bridal boutiques, Bustles & Bows Bridal Boutique and The Bridal Boutique by Mae Me to showcase some of their beautiful Badgley Mischka collection. These beauties are available at each respective boutique and would complete any wedding day look beautifully.

H We both taught at Holy Cross School. It was our first year teaching and our administrators happened to give us the same planning period. We most definitely fell for one another the first time we spoke. Not a lot of lesson planning happened those first few days at school! We know it’s rare, but it’s true what they say – when you know, you know.

We went to Paris to spend time with my old friends there. Stu had been organizing the proposal with my friends in Paris for months! It was the perfect proposal. I was completely surprised. After the proposal, Stu said that he wanted to walk to a nearby restaurant to have dinner together, but we walked to the Hotel Amour where he surprised me again, with all of our friends waiting in the candlelit courtyard with champagne, to toast us as we walked in. We enjoyed a delicious meal amongst dear friends. Besides our wedding, it is easily the best day of my life.

The wedding planning was bittersweet for me. My father lost his battle to cancer less than three months before our wedding day. To say it was disheartening would be an understatement. Love for my Dad carried me through each day. I am very crafty, so I made most of the décor. Everyone we worked with was amazing, so once we found all of our vendors, I only had to focus on the décor and personal details.

Stu and I originally wanted to write our own vows, but we felt a little overwhelmed and ended up opting for traditional vows. But I had always planned to include this particular verse in my vows to Stu. When the officiant read my favorite verse, without any prompting from me, I was moved to tears.

I will always carry all of the love that surrounded us that day. There was so much love, so much support, so many hugs, so much dancing, so many smiles and laughs, and so many happy tears. There were friends and family from California, New York, Florida, and even England and France. I will never forget how overwhelming and humbling it was to be surrounded by so many loving people, who were all there to celebrate our love and commitment to one another.

S We met in the library at Tulane University Law School. Ben pretended like we had already met before (“You look so familiar!”), and I didn’t figure out this was just a line guys sometimes use until well after we were engaged.

Ben asked me to go for a walk with him in Ocean Springs, Mississippi where his parents live. He had set up a little picnic for us. I didn’t think anything of it; I just figured he was being nice since I had a tough week. He asked me, “Do you want any strawberries?” I replied, “No.” Then he asked, “Do you want any chocolate?” Again I replied, “No.” “Do you want any grapes?” “No.” We had recently eaten a big brunch so I really wasn’t hungry. He then says, “Ok. I have one more question for you,” and in one smooth motion, he got down on one knee and said, “Will you marry me?”

Planning was difficult since I wasn’t living in New Orleans at the time. I relied a lot on online reviews and word-of-mouth recommendations. My mother-in-law helped me a lot by making trips with me to New Orleans to check out venues, florists, etc.

My favorite part of the wedding day was taking pictures after the ceremony with my family and friends in Jackson Square. I loved it!

The most memorable moment for me was during our reception, I remember looking around the room full of smiling faces. In that moment I realized how special weddings are and I made sure to relish the rest of the evening.

summer we d d i n g c o l o r p a l e tt e s by Nadia Ramadan

Choosing a color palette is the first step to decorating for your summer wedding. It’s incredible how colors can completely change the feel of an event. When choosing your perfect color scheme, start by thinking about your venue and the mood that you would like to set. Will your event be held during the daytime or at night? Do you want to create a bright, playful atmosphere or would you like a romantic intimate affair? It is important to keep all these details in mind when selecting your colors. It’s also vital to only select three main colors when coming up with a color palette. Too many hues can become confusing and distracting. If you are in need of a little help, check out some of this summer’s hottest color combinations below.

Tangerine, Wasa b i and W hite Are you ready to welcome summer with a bold and vibrant mix of colors? Try pairing tangerine, wasabi and white for your big day. Your guests will be delighted with this lively and interesting combination of colors.

H Andy and I both being music buffs happened to continuously cross each other’s path for many years at different venues. We’d often exchange a friendly ‘hello’ then at a chance meeting we found ourselves wrapped up in a long conversation and the rest is history.

What I love about our proposal is that it was a no-brainer. We knew we wanted to get married; there was never a question. We were a team, we laughed at each other’s jokes, finished each other’s sentences, and everything was better together. We had already begun planning by the time he surprised me with my ring, which occurred on his birthday. What a great way to celebrate a birthday!

Our wedding was the perfect blend of timeless elegance, the magic of Christmas and the feel of old New Orleans. I had dreamed of a Christmas wedding since I was a kid. The church doors were decorated with beautiful fresh wreaths, the pews were adorned with holly and even the boutonnieres had a sprig of evergreen. The musical talent showcased at our ceremony was absolute perfection.

The dance floor was the place to be while BRW got down with the guests and entertained us all with their truly one of a kind style. Fun fact - I changed the date of my wedding to make sure they would be available! They were my first and only choice!

Even though the planning was undeniably time consuming, I wanted to give my family an unforgettable evening. We’ve always celebrated Christmas in a big way and this would be no exception. Even our wedding favors were custom printed, red ornaments that read, “It’s A Wonderful Life...As Husband and Wife.” Every last detail was worth the time and effort. The best advice I can give to any bride is to stay super organized no matter what!

B Brandon and I met in college at the UNO fitness center. I was doing some stretches and he just came over and sat next to me and started talking. After chatting for a while, he invited me to go play tennis with him the next day. The rest is history!

One night, Brandon told me we were going to a Mardi Gras party. We got dressed up and hit the French Quarter. As we were walking passed the Saint Louis Cathedral, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. As soon as I said yes, nearly two dozen friends and family members came out from their hiding spots in Jackson Square, cheered and gave their congratulations. Needless to say, the ‘Mardi Gras party’ never actually existed, but I wasn’t complaining.

The entire reception was amazing. After all of the scheduled stuff was over with and all that was left was to dance, socialize and take goofy pictures in the photo booth. It was the most carefree I’ve been in months!

The moment I realized I was next to walk down the aisle, suddenly it hit me that this is the big moment. This was it. I had tears rolling down my face before I was half way down the aisle. I looked at my husband to notice him chuckling at me for bawling like a baby.

band dj vs.

How do you choose? by Sarah Peneguy

Can’t decide? Well, you’re in luck! Here is our list of the top 5 things to consider when deciding between a band or DJ. So stop stressing already – we are here to help!

1.

First off, what type of mood do you want at your wedding reception? The type of music you both decide on will ultimately make the decision for you. Do you believe it’s better to sing along to those catchy pop songs you know so well with no threat of improvisation? If so, the DJ might be your best option. Maybe you prefer to have more interaction when those songs are being delivered and rock-n-roll songs are at the top of your playlist. These songs are best heard live.

2.

You also want to consider the cost in your decision. Usually, a DJ will be less expensive than a live band, since technically you’re paying for one person instead of 5 or more. Even though this is typically the norm, the price will differ based on how popular the DJ is and how many members a band may have.

3.

Another important detail to think deeply about is where your wedding will be held. Different venues have different guidelines to follow. It’s possible you won’t have the space to fit a live band. Not to mention, any restrictions your venue may have on the amount of equipment allowed in a certain area.

4. 5. 152

After you debate about the tone, the money, and your wedding space, all that’s really left to factor in is your feelings. Which do you honestly prefer? A DJ will offer a wider song selection, making sure everyone at the wedding is pretty happy and content. Many DJ’s have the gift of setting the mood of the night and can also take requests if you are cool with that. DJ’s also have a down side too. This is where the band comes in. While DJ’s are more known for staying in the corner, a band is right in the action. Not only are you getting those songs you love, but you’re also getting a live show and band members who entice the crowd and boost them up. It makes for much more of an event and a livelier feel. Their downside is not having the huge selection of songs to choose from, although experienced bands are always updating their play list. Remember before you make a decision to request to see the band or DJ in action. Their appearance and how they interact with others might sway you one way or the other. If this is not available, be sure to look at the playlists each has to offer to see if the songs you love are present.

L Daniel and I met senior year of high school. We went to prom together! I had originally asked another guy to go to prom with me as friends, but after Daniel and I met and hit it off, I wanted to go with him instead! Daniel was kind enough to un-ask the other guy for me and set him up with one of my best friends! We still all joke about it! My original prom date ended up becoming best friends with Daniel and was the best man in our wedding!

Daniel took me down into the French Quarter for my birthday. We went to Palace Cafe, where we go every year for my birthday! I could tell he was nervous and antsy about something as we sat down - I knew something was up! Suddenly, he got up, walked over to my seat and got down on one knee! All the staff came out and applauded and everyone started clapping, it was amazing! I felt very special.

My favorite part of the wedding day was getting to dance with Daniel for our first dance! We loved the song we picked, The Best is Yet to Come, and Daniel knew all the words. He was singing and making me laugh and spinning me on the dance floor. It was a great feeling to be dancing and to look around and see tons of people who love us and support us standing there around us celebrating with us!

The ride to the reception was extremely memorable! We were handed champagne as we got into our Rolls Royce. I will always remember the many police escorts zipping around us! Daniel was so sweet and endearing at that moment, and the look on his face as he looked at me is something I will never forget! It was hard to believe it was happening, honestly!

Another memory I will always cherish is Daniel reading his own vows to me. There was a moment where he became choked up and needed to pause. I couldn’t help myself; I started crying. His vows were so beautiful and honest. They were complete perfection. I keep his vows on my nightstand to read them whenever I want!

PLANNING

When to

splurge Wedding Dress – If it’s the “dream dress,” it’s worth spending a few extra bucks. Looking good is feeling good. Shoes – You’ll be on your feet most of the day, buying comfy shoes is a must. Bridal Bouquet – Spend on the flowers that you really want and love. Centerpieces – sets the style and mood for the reception. Appetizers & Entrée – If there is one thing people will remember, it’s the food. Wedding Cake – The same with your bouquet and dress, don’t settle for filling or flavor you won’t enjoy. Music & Lighting – don’t underestimate the power of lighting and the right tunes. These things set the mood for the rest of the night. Photography – This is a pretty obvious one. You’ll be looking at these photographs for years to come.

Knowing when to save and when to spend freely is a tricky business, especially when it comes to weddings and eager brides. Here is a quick list to help you decide which things are worth the money. by Sarah Peneguy

When to

save Wedding Veil – It’s understandable to over spend for your dress, but a veil? Makeup – Professional makeup can sometimes make you appear as an entirely different person; it’s okay to be yourself on your wedding day. Flower Girl Bouquet – She doesn’t even need a bouquet, give her some rose petals and she’s good to go. Ceremony Chairs – Trust me, no one notices the chairs. Dessert – Isn’t this what a cake is for? Wedding Favors – These aren’t something to stress over. A donation, or even if they’re DIY will work perfectly!
