[ cover Image Inspiration ] Our cover this issue is dedicated to the upcoming Mardi Gras season. The colorful backdrop of Mardi Gras world served as a perfect location for this vibrant editorial. Mardi Gras refers to events of the Carnival celebrations, beginning on or after Epiphany and culminating on the day before Ash Wednesday. Mardi Gras is French for Fat Tuesday, referring to the practice of the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season, which begins on Ash Wednesday. In the Anglican tradition, the day is referred to as Shrove Tuesday, from the word shrive, meaning “confess”. Related popular practices are associated with celebrations before the fasting and religious obligations associated with the penitential season of Lent. “THROW ME SOME WEDDING PLANNING IDEAS... [ letter from the editor ] Happy New Year! As we begin another year, it is my hope that each one of you has many blessings for which to be thankful. A new year always seems to bring new opportunity. This is especially true in the wedding industry. Many of you have no doubt been surprised with a beautiful engagement ring over the holiday season and will begin the New Year as a brideto-be, planning a wedding. It is our job to provide you with all of the tools that you could possibly need to plan the wedding of your dreams. However, I have always been a strong proponent of thinking outside of the box. To that end, we consistently push the envelope regarding our bridal fashion shoots and article ideas. There are many other magazines that simply take pictures of smiling brides against floral backgrounds. In our past issues, we have featured an Alice in Wonderland inspired shoot, a Steampunk inspired shoot and this issue, a Carnivale/ Mardi Gras inspired shoot, complete with jugglers, acrobats and the like. We strive to inspire our readers by creating sophisticated and edgy photo shoots that will leave them eagerly anticipating what we will do next. Perhaps they can implement some of our

ideas into their own wedding to create a unique look or feel. If just one of our readers is compelled to use a piece of jewelry or a particular hairstyle or dress from one of our shoots, then we have succeeded. We have recently garnered attention from several national blog sites, all of which featured our photo shoots on their sites. We thought that was very cool and it proved to us that people are getting it. We are certainly on to a good thing and will continue to think outside of the box. It is very rewarding work. In this issue, we have chosen to feature the best East bank wedding venues in the New Orleans area. This article was a huge undertaking and we feel that all of our bridesto-be will benefit greatly from our exhaustive research. You simply cannot go wrong with any of these venues as they all have plenty to offer. Compare them and visit them. No matter what it is that you have in mind for your wedding, one of the venues listed can meet your needs. We are proud to work with each of them, as we know the quality of their service. Wishing you a blessed New Year,

“Wise Bride” will be a recurring feature in the NOLA Wedding Guide, and includes helpful tips and advice from our “Wise Bride.”

Q: I am getting mixed answers about registering. Is it appropriate for us to register before the engagement party or is that too soon? - Melissa S, Harahan, La.

GK Photography

WISE BRIDE: Yes, it is appropriate to register before the engagement party because your family and friends want to get you gifts. They are happy for you and the new journey on which you are about to embark. Giving gifts is the least they can do. Be sure to register according to the guest list for the wedding because you’ll want to be certain your guests have enough gifts to give you for all of your wedding festivities.

Q: Is it too early to start planning my wedding two years in advance? - Amber V. Metaire, La. WISE BRIDE: It is never too early to start planning your wedding! When it comes down to the non-negotiable vendors you would like to use, planning in advance is the perfect way to get them. When beginning this early, you will most likely get all of the vendors you want and that perfect date you have always dreamed of. Furthermore, planning early is a great way to cut down on the stress that sometimes comes along in the planning process.

bake, consider making each bridesmaid a cookie asking them in chocolate icing. It’s cute and it’s coming from you. The main thing to remember is to be creative and be yourself! Q: The park we chose to have our wedding at has a parking fee of $3.00 per car. Is it rude to ask my guests to pay that fee when they arrive? - Sarah R. Metairie, La. WISE BRIDE: Wedding guests are not supposed to pay for anything. They are invited as guests to witness you and your husband exchange vows and celebrate that special day with you. See if you can get your budget down somewhere else so that you and your husband can take care of the parking fee. If nothing is set in stone with this particular park, try working something out with them or choose a different park with free parking.

Q: I want to ask my friends to be in my wedding. Is there a certain way to go about this? - Courtney H. New Orleans, La. WISE BRIDE: There are many ways to go about asking the bridal party to participate in your wedding. You can either take each member, personally, out to lunch or invite all of the prospective participants together and ask them in the group setting. Also, you can give a gift and have it written or displayed on the gift. Be personable and make sure it is coming from you. Don’t be afraid to have fun with it. For example, if you love to

[ featured couple ]

Danielle Roppolo and Garrett Hartley D anielle Roppolo and Garrett Hartley are set to marry on Saturday May 19, 2012 at the historic St. Louis Cathedral in the French Quarter. Danielle is a Spa Director at Planet Beach Contempo Spa, and Garrett is a Placekicker for the New Orleans Saints. They are such a beautiful couple, but aside from that they know very well how to keep their relationship strong. As Danielle said, “If you keep a best friendship and intertwine that with lots of love and trust, you are untouchable.” We asked them everything about their wedding from when Garrett popped the question, to the vendors they selected. We’d like to share our conversation regarding their upcoming nuptials and everything in between.

NWG: How did you meet? Danielle: Garrett and I met at the Planet Beach location I was running at the time, became friends immediately, and then began dating about a year later. We have been together as a couple for a year and a half now and friends for three. NWG: Describe your first date. Danielle: First official date was Rock n Sake on Fulton St. It was actually supposed to be a group of friends, and they all sold us out purposely so we’d be alone, lol. It was actually very cute, and definitely a memory we will never forget.

NWG: Tell us about your courtship after the first date. Danielle: It was a blessing from that point on. We fell more and more in love with each other so fast. Never fighting, never angry, always made time for each other no matter how hectic our schedules were. The main part is that we have always had a respect for one another. Staying true to our friendship and above all, our hearts.

14

nola wedding guide

NWG: Describe how he proposed. Danielle: Well it’s all on our wedding website. www.mywedding.com/garrettanddanielleswedding. To sum it up, he had been throwing me off on the idea of marriage for a few weeks at the time, and I was so nervous thinking he was pulling away from me. All the while, he was planning to propose. He called in his family and friends from Texas and around New Orleans, told them to go to our house once he got me out, then he took me to the French Quarter in front of the St. Louis Cathedral. He’s always known that was my dream location for my wedding one-day. He walked me around the corner and got down on one knee underneath a shedding dogwood tree during sunset. I literally just got through saying, “Wow, this is such a romantic setting right here.” And as I turned around he was knelt in front of me, with my ring in his hand, asking me to spend the rest of his life with him. It truly was amazing. Imagine how surprised I was when I called my family on my way home and they didn’t sound shocked. It was because they were already there with champagne ready to celebrate. NWG: How has the wedding planning process gone so far? What has been the most important part of the planning process for each of you? Danielle: Well we had a 14-month engagement, which granted us ample time to get everything accomplished. We have all the big stuff out of the way and done. The most important part of the process for both of us would probably be the fact that we made a pact with each other that since we have so much time to plan this wedding, to enjoy the moments planning. And not to lose sight on what this is about and make memories while enjoying what is supposed to be the happiest times of our lives. NWG: Where are your ceremony and reception venues and how did you decide upon them? Danielle: Well this was a no brainer. The St. Louis Cathedral is where we are holding the ceremony simply because I’ve dreamt of getting married there my whole life. It’s such a huge part of the history of this great city and so beautiful, all while being such a major landmark for a traditional Catholic wedding. We are having our reception at the Harrah’s Hotel immediately following the wedding. We shopped around different locations, but when we walked into Harrah’s we both sort of looked at each other with our jaws to the ground. It’s so beautiful and spacious, not to mention the layout of the ballroom and cocktail area being so perfect for our amount of guests.

a store that does them locally, so that I can see and feel them to make a decision. No clue yet on where I’m going for that. For florist we decided on The Crystal Vase (in Kenner, LA) Crystal Aiola is GREAT at what she does. We never second-guessed her as our choice once and I recommend her to everyone for anything. We used her for our Engagement Party and I plan to use her for my bridal shower. She is so exact on what you want it’s crazy. We are going with Zoe’s Bakery on the North-shore. Shane (the head baker) has done work for many of Garrett’s fellow teammates, Coach Payton, and their families for events. He’s a cake genius.

NWG: Please tell us a little about your vendors: Danielle: Our photographer of course is Stacy Marks. He, in our opinion, is the best in the New Orleans area. I was referred to him by so many. Once we saw his work, we HAD to snatch him up. He does such great work. We went with Welliver Productions for our videography they have a new feature called “Love Story” which basically is an interview process on the bride and groom that you could make your own (sweet, funny, etc.) We will probably go in the “funny” direction with it. And tell them to ask extremely embarrassing questions to the other, and have us answer them all so we can play at the rehearsal dinner and during the cocktail hour before the reception starts as a fun treat to our guests. I will be wearing 2 dresses the day of the wedding, but I can’t give that away just yet. I have to let my groom see me in them first ;) We are actually planning the wedding ourselves. However, we are interviewing for day of coordinators at the moment. We Just got word that we will be able to get No Idea. I’ve heard so many wonderful things about the group and hope to catch a performance one day soon. I do have something up my sleeve and hopefully they will work with me on it. So far for the engagement party and Save the Dates, I’ve used WeddingPaperDivas.com and LOVED them. For the actual wedding invitations I will have to go to

NWG: What is your advice to future couples? Danielle - Our advice is two things Number 1: Never to lose sight on why you decide to get married in the first place. Anyone can love. It takes commitment, dedication, love, trust, faith, and the ability to co-exist as a life partner; but the most important ingredient in our opinion, is friendship. Neither Garrett nor myself ever truly had a friendship in our past relationships. When we found each other, it was like we had a whole different respect for the other person in ways we’d never had before. If you keep a best friendship and intertwine that with lots of love and trust, you are untouchable. It’s such a relief knowing when you’ve found that, and it makes for a long and healthy marriage. Number 2: Don’t sweat the small stuff. Bickering a lot is just as bad as huge fights sporadically. If he forgets to take the trash out on trash days, shrug it off, don’t point it out and argue. If she nags excessively on doing something that, to her, is important, don’t get frustrated, do it. If he doesn’t remember to say I love you when he leaves for work, plays an hour extra of his video games, or goes on a weekend hunting trip with the guys, let him. There are so many other reasons to fight or argue. Save it for if/when it matters, and you’ll have a happier home that will make the both of you want to go home to MORE.

our wedding pictures are a way to relive the special moments of your wedding day for years to come. When your photographer gives you the finished pictures and it is time to get them printed, you have an important decision to make: you can either get them printed at a drugstore/discount department store or you can have them processed by a professional lab. Though the drugstores may have slightly cheaper prices, the professional lab has the more experienced staff that is dedicated solely to the printing of images. The professional labs do not have seasonal employees who get limited training. They also do not sell anything else other than photo processing. Primary Digital Imaging is a local imaging lab based in Kenner. They work with most of the professional wedding photographers in the city and have been in business for over 50 years. They are committed to providing the highest quality, color photographic services, along with dependable delivery and outstanding customer service. Robbie Holland, with Primary, says, “Your wedding is one of the biggest events in your life. You hired many professionals to make the event as special as possible. As a professional lab, we are making sure that you get the very best quality from your images. This is our primary focus. We are not a store with a lab in the back. Our equipment is state-of-the-art and our staff is fully trained to make sure that the images are printed correctly. Your photographer took extensive time to edit your images, giving you the very best. Therefore, you should make sure that those images are of the highest standard.

Shannon Hinton and Kevin Kern

S

hannon Hinton met Kevin Kern at the Bulldog Bar & Grill in Midcity. Shannon was there with a co-worker who happened to be a friend of Kevin’s. She asked to be introduced to him. Kevin was involved with someone else at the time, but a few months later, they would meet again. While having lunch with the same co-worker, Shannon saw Kevin who just happened to be in the same restaurant. When they were reintroduced, they learned that they were both single. Kevin “friended” Shannon on Facebook and the two started chatting and exchanged numbers. Conflicting schedules made the first date planning difficult, but they agreed to meet at a friend’s birthday party. After the party, they decided to join some friends at a bar on St. Charles Ave. where they spent the rest of the evening talking over wine and watching the street cars go by. As they walked back to the car, they shared their first kiss in the rain. The couple had been dating for a little over a

34

nola wedding guide

year when Kevin decided to ask Shannon to marry him. Shannon had the notion that Kevin would propose on Mardi Gras Day 2010. She even had a special costume made, just in case. Alas, the weather was freezing and they decided to skip the French Quarter celebrations to join Kevin’s family at the Fair Grounds. Shannon was a little upset that her fantasy proposal didn’t come true. The next day was Kevin’s birthday and Shannon made dinner reservations. When they arrived at the restaurant, the hostess gave her a big smile and said, “Oh, yeah, the birthday!” Shannon didn’t recall mentioning to the hostess that it was Kevin’s birthday on the phone earlier, but Kevin just waved off her suspicions. The staff and chef treated the couple grandly, and just as dessert was served, Kevin complained that he couldn’t make his birthday wish without a candle. Knowing that Kevin was never one to complain, Shannon was puzzled when Kevin got up from the table. “Where are you going?” she began to ask, but Kevin got down on one knee holding the most beautiful ring she had seen and

w w w .n ol a w e ddin g g u ide . c o m

asked her to be his wife. Shannon says, “I didn’t say anything for a moment, I was so in shock. He prompted me to answer, and I came back to reality and replied, ‘Yes, yes, yes!’” Shannon and Kevin were wed at St. Patrick’s Church. They went for a traditional, preppy style to their wedding with a hint of 50’s vintage. They even had a friends’ ’57 Chevy Bel Aire for part of their transportation. Their colors were navy with several shades of pink. The groom’s cake was an exact replica of The Bulldog Bar, the place that they met. Shannon’s dress was purchased from Pearl’s Place. She recalls, “It was our first day out shopping for my gown and decided to stop in to see if they weren’t too busy. There was no wait and my consultant was very helpful. I tried on a few dresses but knew I had found the one when I burst into tears and exclaimed, ‘He’s going to love it?’”

Focus on your marriage and less on the wedding. If at the end of the day you are married to the love of your life, then everything went perfectly according to plan!

They chose Eau Claire Photographics to capture the event. Shannon says, “I interviewed quite a few photographers. I was immediately drawn to Sandra’s work. I describe her style as effortless and timeless, although I know what she does is hardly effortless. I wanted very few posed photographs and wanted things to be captured in an organic, un-messed with way. Her usage of light and sense of timing are incredible. I get so many compliments on both my bridal photos and wedding photos. I know that in 50 years my photos will still be “in style” and that was very important to me when choosing a photographer. Sandra gave me absolutely everything I wanted and nothing that I didn’t!” [ JUNE 11, 2011 ] Alert Transportation provided the limos. Shannon and Kevin were pleased with their experience with Alert. The limos arrived ahead of schedule. The drivers were fun, very courteous and extremely accommodating, especially with the last minute addition of another car.

Christine Letort and Russell Hentze

“From the moment I met him I knew he was the only I would marry”, recalls Christine Letort at the first meeting with Russell Hentze at her grandmother’s home. It was Christine’s brother, Wayne, who introduced the perfect match not knowing the two would be married six years later. A trip to get a snowball had Russell and Christine sitting at the lakefront in Mandeville enjoying a relaxing beach they had found. Little did Christine know that after Russell told her how much he loved her and wanted to spend the rest of his life with her, that the famous question would be asked. Both nervous and caught in the moment Christine said yes. She says, “It was a very, very special moment in my life that I will never forget.” They chose to wait until Christine was finished with nursing school so that she could fully focus on the wedding planning. When nursing school was complete, they decided to tie the knot on

October 21, 2011 at St. Joseph Church in New Orleans. After the ceremony, the couple headed to Southern Oaks Plantation where they shared their first dance as man and wife together. While Southern Oaks Plantation saw to their every need, Christine and Russell danced the night away. Christine says, “I could not have asked for a better experience and I recommend them to everyone!” Videographer, Chad Dyle with Dyle Films, was chosen to capture and montage the night. Christine compliments him saying, “His assistants were very nice and comfortable to work with.” Beth’s Flowers specifically stood out to Christine because she was able to preview the flowers the day before the wedding. “The flowers came out absolutely beautiful!”

If I had any advice for future brides it would be not to stress about the small things. Some things will go wrong but you probably won’t even notice. Enjoy your day because it goes by in a blink of an eye. Just have fun!

Big Easy Limos provided the transportation. The couple was very pleased with their experience as the company was right on time and very professional. The attire for the night was a combination of elegance and tradition. To help with this look, John’s Tuxedos provided the groom and groomsmen with their classic black tuxedos and a black, skinny tie. The bridesmaids wore formal length, Shadow Gray chiffon dresses from Pearl’s Place. Christine says, “Pearl’s Place made the bridesmaids experience easy when it came to alterations.”

Emily Welch and Charlie Green, Jr.

E

mily Welch and Charlie Green, Jr. first met while she was volunteering at a golf tournament at English Turn Golf & Country Club. It was really early in the morning and Emily is not a morning person. Charlie was full of energy and smiling. After that brief encounter in 2008 and then a number of chance encounters over the next year and a half, the first official date occurred in the summer of 2009. Emily and Charlie both love traditional New Orleans cuisine, so what better place to start then a great Nola restaurant. After that first dinner, a great story began. The couple spent the next year and a half having the time of their lives. Emily says, “Everyday is a treat with him. I only wish I could clone him for all those great girls out there looking for Mr. Right. He is a true gentleman.”

On Valentine’s night while at Charlie’s house, Emily was reading a book in the recliner room. Charlie walked out of the bedroom and handed Emily a small jewelry box. It wasn’t wrapped so she just sat there and held it, not knowing what to think. Emily muses, “It was

a complete surprise! When I finally opened it, I may have been the happiest girl on earth at that moment! If you haven’t seen a 6’4” guy try to get down on one knee before…it was unbelievable. I didn’t even cry because I was just so excited to be marrying Charlie!” Emily and Charlie were wed on May 13, 2011 at English Turn Golf & Country Club. The coordinating team created a storybook day for them. They transformed both the ceremony and reception spaces to make Emily’s dreams a reality. Chef J.R. Picard made some of the couples’ favorite dishes: Kobe sliders, grilled scallops and charbroiled oysters. Brenda Sison Photography was chosen to capture the event. “All I can say is ‘Wow!’ Brenda is unbelievable when it comes to great photography,” adds Emily. She wanted intimate, candid shots of the celebration of family and friends and Brenda did just that. The couple chose One Louder Productions for their video. Kirk created a small documentary video with chapters of Emily and Charlie’s sweet, special mo-

EIFFEL SOCIETY The Eiffel Society opened in September of 2010. Located on St. Charles Ave. in New Orleans, the building has some incredible history behind it. The steel that makes up the skeleton of the building was taken from a restaurant that once sat on top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. It was literally taken down like Legos and shipped to New Orleans and then rebuilt on St. Charles Ave. in the 1980’s. The developers of Eiffel Society allowed over 20 international artists to live in the space for 30 days for a voluntary lock-in to create the unique interior décor and ambiance. All of the amazing interactive art installations were created during those 30 days. The facility holds up to 500 people for a reception or 250 people for a seated event. Ceremonies can be held on property and off-street and street parking is available. Valet parking is also an option for those interested. Inhouse catering can also be added to any wedding package. A very modern and unique ambiance, a great St. Charles Ave. location, and upscale and professional service make the Eiffel Society a must see. [ trend alert ]

Wedding Dresses 2012 t’s your day to shine in the wedding gown Iwedding that best suits your body-type, style, and theme. Choosing the best dress

can feel overwhelming because of the vast amount of options. In this article, you will find peace knowing that we have organized a variety of popular trends for the New Year that will best showcase you on your very special day. Along with our professional insight, we have also spoken with a couple of local boutique owners to get their take on the newest trends for 2012. LACE AND TEXTURES For the New Year, fashion designers are going all out with new styles showcasing lace, crinkled chiffon, and organza. Lace is back this year and, more than ever, it’s a vintage touch to a modern dress Elaine at Pearl’s Place bridal boutique said, “We absolutely are seeing a lot of lace, lace trim, and lace with pink underlay.” She also added that Pearl’s Place has beautiful lace gowns at every price point. If you don’t prefer lace, keep in mind there are a variety of lace patterns such as Chantilly, Alencon, and Venice. The first of the three, Chantilly, is the lightest and quite soft with floral patterns. The second, Alencon, is a more traditional type lace with a defined pattern. The third, Venice, usually offers a type of geometric look and is sometimes accompanied by a keyhole back in the gown. Shelly Maestri, the owner of

Bustles and Bows Bridal Boutique adds, “Lace is always popular. We have been seeing classic lace with modern touches, such as a cage skirt seen on Denia by LaSposa Bridals, and beautiful detailed keyhole backs.” The textures that are bringing dresses a brand-new look are seen not only on the bodice but also on the skirts. The skirts of wedding gowns in the new collections are giving brides a whole new way to express themselves through oversized flowers, elaborate beading, gathered taffeta flowers and organza petals. These elaborate and intricately designed gowns are giving brides more options than ever for their big day. ILLUSION NECKLINES The illusion necklines are making an appearance in the New Year’s gowns, giving them a chic yet classical look. We have Kate Middleton to thank for these illusion necklines. They are often a sheer layer of fabric, of your choice, which covers a part of the chest or shoulders that a

54

nola wedding guide

w w w .n ol a w e ddin g g u ide . c o m

strapless dress would normally expose. The strapless dress has been quite a hit the past few years and has yet to fade out, but this addition could give it an original touch. These sheer and delicate pieces of fabric are usually embroidered beautifully or embellished with jewels or lace. This type of neckline is perfect for a bride that is looking for something elegant that provides coverage, but at the same time is not going to make her sweat. Illusion necklines are a great alternative to the ever-so-popular strapless wedding gowns. TWO-TIERED SKIRTS The two-tiered skirt gives you two very important options when it comes to body shape. The designers of these skirts took a closer look at the curvier parts of wedding gowns that sometimes make a gown a definite “No.” This creative dimension added to skirts gives any body shape a chance to shine. No matter what silhouette your looking for, this fresh trend is versatile enough to achieve it. It can hide your hips or give you some extra curve!

BLUSHING BRIDE Of course the traditional white wedding gown is usually first pick, but designers’ new collections say different. The new alternative to white is a variety of soft colors such as silver, blush, apricot, antique cream, and even green as seen in the Spring 2012 Vera Wang Collection. With all of these colors on the palette, your choices are wide open, even if you’ve always pictured yourself in a traditional white gown. Who knows what you’ll decide once you’ve got a beautiful blush-pink gown on in the dressing room? And for the brides that choose white, there are still several ways to add a splash of color

to your gown. Elaine at Pearl’s Place bridal boutique adds, “Color is definitely back this season.” A few examples include bridal belts, embroidered shades of pink, and threedimensional floral accents. When asked about the array of colors available, Stephanie Kass, a consultant at Bustles and Bows said, “The colors are great because they flatter more skin tones and hair colors, but at the end of the day these colors are still ’bridal‘.” Spring 2012 is the perfect season to show your true colors. REMOVABLE PIECES A new and interesting trend exclusively offered at Bustles and Bows bridal boutique is the wedding gown with removable pieces. This offers brides a choice of having two dresses in one. The bottom half of the dress can be taken off to unveil a beautiful going-away dress. Not only is this a great way to show your flare this season, it saves you money! Some brides may have to choose between the more expensive wedding gown and the less expensive to allow budget room for a going-away dress. No longer is this an issue with the new detachable pieces. Shelly Maestri owner at Bustles and Bows expressed her excitement by saying, “One of our favorite and exclusive lines, Essence of Australia, has so many versatile options. Gowns with detachable one shoulder straps, 3-piece styles where you have a short reception or going away gown under a fuller skirt, removable flowers, detachable straps, etc.” These pieces of gowns give you the option of changing the look of your dress throughout the ceremony and reception without the hassle of buying a different dress. This year, wedding gowns are all about showing your creative flare. The options are endless: floral accents, different color hues, lace trim, two-tiered skirts, or detachable pieces. Don’t worry if you aren’t crazy about every trend for the New Year. It’s your day and your gown will showcase you in every aspect that you choose. Enjoy it and don’t let dress shopping stress you out too much because, before you blink your eyes, you’ll be off on your honeymoon reminiscing about every moment of it.

[ cost of the union ]

I

t has happened. Your soul mate finally garnered up the courage (and a month’s salary) to pop the question, you said “yes”, and you’ve set the date. Now you must pick the church, venue, photographer, band, florist, dress, etc., etc, etc. With a whole year or more of wedding planning, it is easy to lose sight of what the day essentially stands for: your vow to love and honor one another for the rest of your lives.

Eau Claire Photographics

It wasn’t until the last century that western civilization actually married for love, but the ceremony of matrimony always came with a pretty large price tag, for both bride and groom. In Ancient Greece, the marriage ceremony consisted of three parts: prewedding ceremonies, wedding ceremony, and post-wedding ceremonies, and took about three days to complete. The ceremonies consisted of feasts and banquets similar to today’s rehearsal dinners and receptions.

Now granted, the planning process can be overwhelming at times and a looming budget doesn’t make it any easier. Furthermore, the economy isn’t at its best these days and we all are feeling the financial strain. But even with all of this in mind, the fundamental element of your wedding is love. It is love that brought you to this point and love that will carry you through to the years to come.

[ wedding tales ]

Heather Pardew and Ryan Dwyer

Heather Pardew (Heady) and Ryan Dwyer (Owl) met on a steaming hot day in August 2009. Heady was filling in for a friend at a restaurant on Carrolton Avenue when Owl went in for lunch and to say hello to his friend, the owner. Owl recalls, “Unexpectedly behind the counter was the sweetest, funniest and most dangerously beautiful person I’ve ever met in my life. She asked me if I’d like naan bread with my lunch and I said, ‘Naan for me, thank you’, and we fell in love. Pure and simple.” Owl returned to the restaurant for three consecutive days to see Heady. On the third day, Heady told Owl, “You know I won’t be here tomorrow, so you should probably go ahead and ask me out today.” Owl did just that and the two went out on Frenchman street to see a friend’s band. They had a sushi dinner at 1am and went back to Owl’s house for a nightcap. They ended up talking and dancing on his front porch for hours.

It was just the beginning of long days and nights of music, eating, drinking, laughing, and dancing. After two wonderful years together, Owl thought it’d best if they got married. On March 5, 2011, he proposed to Heady at his family’s restaurant. Her family was in town for Mardi Gras. Owl got up to “help” serve the spumoni for dessert. Heady saw a beautiful, custom ring lodged in the pistachio flavor. Owl asked her if he could be her husband and she nonchalantly responded, “That’s cool.” The couple was married on November 11, 2011 at Christ Church Cathedral in New Orleans. The reception was held at a downtown hotel. The wedding cake was traditional almond cake layered with amaretto and caramel buttercream and covered in a decadent, white chocolate fondant. Owl’s groom’s cake was a red velvet cake layered with raspberry buttercream in the shape of a film reel.

We think that when you are having a big wedding, it’s important to keep in mind that people get married on whims all the time and it all works out. So, if you’re afraid that something is missing, just relax and enjoy all of the extras that are being thrown at you. In the end, all it’s really about is creating a future with the one you love. Having an amazing party to celebrate that is just a perk. The colors of the wedding were emerald and black. There were beautiful flower arrangements created with black calla lilies and peacock feathers. The bridesmaid’s dresses were emerald gowns completed with black fascinators and long gloves. Heady’s dress had a lace embossed bodice with a chiffon skirt. The matching ivory and lace “Juliet” veil and headpiece belonged to her mother. The guys wore vintage style, onebutton tuxedos.

Heady and Owl chose Atelier NOLA to capture the event. They said, “They were great! We absolutely adore Nonney and Ole. Heady had some [ NOVEMBER 11, 2011 ] experience with them from modeling, but working with them, from the bridal portrait through to the Ceremony: Christ Church Cathedral big day, was an absolute pleasure for the both Photographer: Atelier NOLA photography of us.”

[ online registry ]

by Allison Rose

The Tech-Savvy Bride T he idea of a wedding registry once involved kiosks and long lines in department stores, but those days have swiftly come to an end. Technology has reinvented the way modern brides think of wedding registries forever. The steps that a bride takes, from announcing engagements to choosing a style of china, can now all be done online. Brides now have access to international stores and the convenience of linking all registries into one, central location. TIMELINES One should start the registry process about 6-12 months prior to the wedding. When beginning, it’s a great idea to send out registry announcement cards. These cards will help your guests to get an idea of what types of gifts you’re expecting, and to better manage their time in choosing one. Below is a registry timeline to help you with organizing and making your registry experience more efficient for everyone. WEBSITES A few websites to help you with the registry process are: myregistry.com, weddingchannel.com, theknot.com, giftregistry360.com and amazon.com. Most of these sites contain options that allow you to create your own wedding page, send registry updates to social networking sites, and consolidate all registered stores into one. When choosing registry locations, be sure to check the exchange/return policy. This important step can save you trouble if you have to return any duplicate or broken items that you receive. Theknot. com offers an interactive checklist, which makes it virtually impossible for you to forget wedding registry essentials. The convenience of these websites is also shared with your guests in that they don’t have to leave the house to purchase a gift. Smart phones now have applications like “Gift Registry 360 Scan & Add,” which has the capability to scan and add items instantly to the bride’s registry.

items, but make it a point to have a wide range of gift options at varying price points—that way, everyone wins! CHARITY It has been said that it is better to give than to receive. Should you desire to do so, setting up a partnership with a local charity is a great way to start your new life together. Donating your wedding gifts to those who are less fortunate can bring you far more in return than the gifts themselves. This giving is also a great way for your guests to contribute money to an admirable cause of your choosing and possibly continue to give more in the future. Some local charities that have impeccable service records are: www.handsonneworleans.org | 504 483-8041 www.vineyardneworleans.org| 504 467-3257 6-12 months: Begin the process by determining your registry locations and choosing what items you would like. Create a wedding website so that guests are able to keep up with your registry updates. 2-3 months: At this point, be sure that you have chosen items in various categories and price ranges. Send registry announcements and let your family and friends spread the word. 1 month: If you are moving, be sure to update your shipping address at all of your registry locations. Do a final update of your registry. 3-4 weeks post wedding: It’s thank you card time and most registry sites will include a tracker so that you won’t forget anyone.

ORGANIZING Your wedding registry should be comprised of several categories, including: kitchen, bathroom, home improvement, décor, and appliances. Websites will help you narrow down and organize your needs by providing suggestions and subcategories. From these subcategories, it will be easier for you to decide on styles and other specifics. Consult with your fiancé on registry items and decide as a couple on the wants and needs of your future home. It can be tempting to choose only lavish, expensive things to furnish your new life, but it’s important to be considerate of your guests’ budgets. It’s okay to choose some big-ticket

Jeana Crosby and Joe Taravella, Jr.

J

eana and Joe met through a mutual friend who was also the bass guitarist in Joe’s band, Vedas. Jeana would make appearances at the band’s performances to show her support for her friend, and eventually a spark ignited between Jeana and Joe. Jeana played hard to get and it took Joe some time to figure out if Jeana was even interested in him. He eventually asked her out to dinner. Jeana then invited Joe out to celebrate her birthday. That night, they shared their first kiss. Exactly two years later, on Jeana’s birthday, Joe proposed. After picnicking all day at Audubon Park, Joe took a walk with Jeana and her dog, Charlie. It was then, by a fountain, that Joe dropped to one knee and asked Jeana to be his wife. Deciding on a wedding date was a little tricky due to Joe’s busy work schedule. Joe is co-owner of Studio Vieux Carre, one of the premier wedding video studios in New Orleans. He also owns Second Line Films, another wedding videography company. During

hurricane season, the wedding industry in New Orleans tends to slow down, so that seemed the best time to schedule it. They decided on September 24, 2011. Jeana and Joe chose Atelier NOLA for their engagement photos. Their invitations were handmade and assembled by Jeana using a vintage typewriter theme. The ceremony and reception were held at the same venue, which was conveniently located downtown and close to their guests’ accommodations. Jeana’s dad, the Reverend Scott Crosby, officiated the ceremony. The overall theme of the wedding was vintage inspired. Jeana’s dress was an ivory pleated, silk organza, trumpet gown. It had an Alencon lace bodice with a sweetheart neckline (also in lace), and a petal accent on one shoulder. It also had a sheer net, trumpet skirt with lace applique and pleated, organza tiers. It was completed with a chapel train. The bridesmaids’ dresses were simple, pale yellow, strapless dresses.

Allow yourself to let go a little on the wedding day. Don’t worry yourself over minor details and being in control of every little thing because everything may not go as planned. Try and remind yourself that you only have one day. Literally you only have a few hours to enjoy that special moment, don’t let it get away spending even one minute concerned or frustrated about factors that may not be in your control. Live that day like you want to remember it forever.

For the tuxedos, Joe didn’t want a bowtie or a vest. With the help of Joey at John’s Tuxedos, he chose a simple black tuxedo with black skinny tie, accented with an ivory pocket square. Joe says, “The professional staff at John’s was able to work easily with adjustments for our out-of-town groomsmen and ushers who weren’t able to have a fitting in person at John’s.” The wedding cake was a three-tiered, red velvet cake with cream cheese icing and a fleur de lis accent on top. The groom’s cake had praline filling and was created in the shape of a snare drum with an 8mm film camera on top.

[ wedding dress storage ] It was love at first sight, the perfect fit for your perfect day - your wedding dress. Although you wore it only once, if you take as much care in preserving your wedding dress as you did in choosing it, then it can be enjoyed as a family heirloom for years to come-symbolizing love and family. Here are a few tips to keep your beloved garment as beautiful as the day you wore it.

1.

You can either have your dress professionally preserved, or you can do it yourself. Either way, your dress should be cleaned within six weeks following your wedding day. Even the smallest stains cause the dress to yellow over time.

2.

Professional gown preservation costs between $150 and $500, depending on the amount of soilage. It is recommended to bring your dress to a reputable dry cleaner who cleans about 100 dresses or more a year.

3. If you choose to take things into your own hands, then you must first decide between box and hanger storage. It may be more practical to store the dress in a box, but hanger storage is the best way to prevent hard-to-remove creases. Either way, buy plenty of acid-free tissue paper.

Eau Claire Photographics

4. For box storage, line an acid-free cardboard box with the tissue paper and lay the hem of the dress in the box. Fold the dress like an accordion, putting tissue paper between each fold. Stuff the bodice of the dress with crumpled tissue. Put some layers of tissue on top and put on the lid (make sure the lid is solid and does not have a plastic window). Store the box in a cool, dry closet. Check the condition of the dress each year, and re-pack so the folds are in different places. 5. For hanger storage, wrap a wide hanger with cotton batting and cover it with muslin. Buy an acid-free cardboard “dress shaper and place it over the hanger. Wrap it in tissue and place the dress over it. Stuff the bodice of the dress and any deep folds with the acid-free tissue paper. Cover the dress with a muslin garment bag and hang it in a cool, dry closet, taking care not to crush it with other clothing. Check the dress each year and wash the muslin cover.

[ mackie says! ]

“Mackie Says!” will be a recurring feature in the NOLA Wedding Guide, and include priceless words of advice from Mackie and his staff for brides who want to look their best on their big day.

Healthy Partners, Happy Life Mackie Shilstone is one of America’s most influential sports performance managers. He has played a pivotal role in the success and longevity of scores of million-dollar, world-class athletes such as Serena Williams and Bernard Hopkins.

I

n my business, I often see couples not only growing old together, but also growing out together. And I’m not the only one to notice this trend. A study published in Obesity in 2009 found that marriage and co-habitation often coincides with significant weight gain, especially in women. It’s no surprise that people tend to pick up each other’s bad habits; that’s human nature. Luckily, the same can be said for good habits. Often when someone comes to me for nutritional advice, his or her spouse reaps the benefits of the new diet, and they both lose weight. In my experience, couples who join a weight loss program together experience better results than those who fly solo. Whether you are about to be married or you’ve been happily married for years, the best time to start getting healthy is always now. If you are ready to make a change, but you’re spouse is less than enthusiastic, perhaps try encouraging them with these conversation starters: Eau Claire Photographics

“It’s really important to me that we start our marriage off in good health, because I plan to spend many, many years having fun with you.” “Since I started exercising, I feel great and it’s such a good outlet for stress. Would you like to come with me the next time I go for a walk?” “Healthcare and health-related medications like those used to treat high blood pressure and diabetes can put a big strain on our budget. Let’s make fitness a priority so we can save our money for the things we really want to do.” “I want to be healthy for our children, and I want us to be good role models for their health.” “Did you know that people who exercise and are generally in good health have the best sex lives?” Making the commitment to get healthy together means not only will you improve your individual health and longevity; you also create wonderful opportunities to do things together. Set goals: Set goals and reward yourselves for achieving them. For example, take a trip at the end of the year to your favorite place only if you reach your fitness goals. Toss the junk: Keeping junk food out of the house is a team effort. Make that decision together, and keep healthy snacks in the house. Work out together. This may be one of the few opportunities you and your spouse get to spend time together without distraction, so walk and talk. Discuss your day over your favorite exercise. Couple’s sport: Find a couple’s sport such as tennis, basketball or volleyball that you can play with another couple. This will encourage cooperation and teamwork strategies, which you’ll apply to other areas of your life, all while getting fit! If your best efforts can’t inspire your better half to follow in your fitness footsteps, don’t throw in the towel. You can still enjoy healthy meals and exercise, with or without your partner. If you set your own individual goals and achieve them, for better or worse, your spouse is likely to follow suite. Jessica Andersen and Beau Alexie

J

essica Andersen and Beau Alexie first met when they were still in diapers. They lived five houses down from each other and were babysat by the same woman. Jessica’s family moved away shortly thereafter, but they were reunited when she was in high school. They had mutual friends and went to the same parties. Jessica then moved to Baton Rouge to attend college at LSU, while Beau attended Southeastern University. While Beau was completing his senior year, Jessica transferred to Southeastern. They were both involved with other people at the time but remained friends. Beau even helped her with her homework. Jessica moved back to New Orleans to enroll in nursing school in 2008. Beau had moved back to New Orleans as well, though neither of them knew about the other’s move. On February 24, 2008, a mutual friend invited Jessica to go out to a bar with him. After spotting Beau, she walked right up to him (after a drink or two) and said, “I’m Jessica and I’m single.” Beau called her the very next day and asked her on their first date. They dated for ten months before Beau asked for her

108

hand in marriage. Jessica came home from work one evening to find all of the lights turned off and a pathway of tea light candles and rose petals leading from the front door, through the master bedroom and ending in the master bathroom. Beau had put a dozen roses and a spa treatment gift card on the path as well a note that said, “Don’t look up until you have read all of this.” The note expressed the feelings that Beau had for Jessica and about the future he envisioned with her. When she looked up and proceeded to the master bathroom, Beau was standing next to the bubble filled tub with a glass of wine in his hand. He then asked her to close her eyes as he handed her a small gift bag. As she reached into the bag to find a small box, Beau got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. Jessica jumped up and down, gave Beau a big hug and with tears running down her cheeks exclaimed, “Yes! Yes! Yes!” Jessica and Beau were married on October 22, 2011. The general theme of the wedding was simple elegance. The wedding colors were ivory and amethyst. Jessica made the invitations.

Stay organized from the beginning. I planned the entire wedding for 18 months with the help of my mom, therefore I enjoyed every minute of planning instead of stressing out. On the day of your wedding, it doesn’t matter if all of the details aren’t perfect if you just focus on you and your new hubby. Soak up every minute because it flies by.

Stacy Marks Photography documented the celebration. Jessica says, ”I thoroughly enjoyed my experience with Stacy. He was professional, yet fun and his work is beyond what we expected.” They chose Suzy Marks Video to be the videographer. Although it is too soon to get her completed video, she says, “I know it will exceed my expectations. They were always available whenever I had questions or concerns. They were amazing to work with.” Big Easy Limos provided transportation for the day. The couple was very satisfied with how punctual and professional the drivers were.

[ October 22, 2011 ]

Photographer: Stacy Marks Videographer: Suzy Marks No Idea was chosen for the entertainment. Jessica and Beau had seen the band many times before the Transportation: Big Easy Limos wedding, reassuring them that they made the right Band: No Idea choice. Jessica recalls, “they made us dance all night and all we heard from our family and friends was how they had never had so much fun at a wedding!” It was a wedding that fulfilled all of their dreams. www. n o la we ddin g g u ide . c o m

Kelly Cureau and Brian Richards

K

elly Cureau met Brian Richards in 2006 while working as a waitress in college. It was a busy Friday night and a co-worker came to her to let her know that his friend, who was dining there, spotted her and had to meet her. Kelly went to up to the table where Brian was eating and said’ “hey”. The next week, Kelly and some co-workers went out after work to a karaoke sports bar where Brian just so happened to be as well. They started talking and realized that they much in common. They spoke so long that night, that they were the last ones to leave the bar. Brian asked Kelly on their first date shortly thereafter. Brian picked Kelly up for their date and met her family. As they got into his car, Kelly’s mom texted her, “We like him a lot, give him a chance.” She knew that if her family loved him, then she would too. They had dinner and wine and talked the entire time. Kelly remembers thinking that it didn’t feel like a first date. She was just so comfortable around Brian. They laughed and spoke as if they had known each other for years. After dinner, they went to see a band play. They danced and had a great time. Brian brought Kelly home at the end of

116

the night, walked her to her door, and gave her a kiss goodnight. Kelly says, “When they say that your Prince Charming will walk into your life when you least expect it, it’s true!” Kelly then went to nursing school. She and Brian had talked about getting engaged, but Kelly wanted to wait until after she graduated. Little did Kelly know that Brian had already purchased the ring. It was a week before her finals and Kelly did nothing but study. Brian kept asking her to do things, but Kelly refused, not knowing what his true intention was. Finally, Brian insisted that they dress up and go to dinner. Kelly relented. While having dinner in a private booth, Brian told Kelly that he wanted to give her everything that she ever wanted and that he was going to start right then. He pulled out the ring and asked her to marry him. They celebrated the romantic and heartfelt proposal with champagne. The couple had their rehearsal dinner at Impastato’s Restaurant. The food was great and the staff was very friendly.

Remember what your wedding is all about. Don’t get caught up in all of the time constraints. Eat, dance and spend time with your new husband. Embrace every second because it will be over in the blink of an eye.

The ceremony took place on March 19, 2011 at St. John the Baptist Church in New Orleans. Kelly says, “The church was gorgeous and gave me the full experience of a traditional church wedding.” They then proceeded to Southern Oaks Planation for the reception. Kelly adds, “The venue was beautiful and the food was to die for.” Kelly and Brian chose George with GK Photography to photograph the celebrations. Kely says, “George is so personable and makes his clients feel like family. He is very knowledgeable in photography and you can tell he truly enjoys what he does. His pictures are breathtaking.”

[ wedding tales ]

Parmida Bokaei and Josh Showalter

P

armida Bokaei met Josh Showalter attending college at the University of New Orleans. They both had secret crushes on each other. After being formally introduced by a mutual friend, they started to date. After only three months of dating, Josh told Parmida that he loved her. It took him six years to finally pop the question. It was Christmas Eve, and Josh’s parents invited the couple over for a Christmas party. During the party, Josh quietly told Parmida that he had a surprise for her. He beckoned Parmida outside to the backyard where a serene scene of a fireplace and the moonlight reflecting off of the lake set the mood. He then dropped to one knee and asked her to marry him. Parmida recalls, “I was so surprised that I broke out in tears and could not respond. I just shook my head ‘yes’.” It was a wonderful moment for Parmida as her entire family was there to witness the proposal.

158

nola wedding guide

The couple was married on June 18, 2011 at St. Joseph Church on Tulane Ave. with a Persian ceremony to follow at a nearby venue. Since Josh is not Persian, the second ceremony, or Aghd, was delightfully different from the Catholic one to which he was accustomed. Parmida had relatives from many different cities and countries attend, some as far as Iran. The couple chose royal blue as their main color with accents of yellow to compliment. Stacy Marks Photography was chosen to photograph their wedding. Parmida says, “I really loved working with him. He was very professional and easy to work with. His work is very unique and I was very happy to get my album back so quickly. His work is excellent!” Suzy Marks Video was chosen to be the official videographer. Parmida recalls that the Suzy Marks team was easy to work with as well.

They were very professional and quick in providing [ JUNE 18, 2011 ] the couple’s video.

[ second line parade ]

Demitasse Weddings

If you want a traditional New Orleans wedding, you want to hire a brass band for a Second Line Parade. It is a way of expressing the unique local flavor of the city. The Second Line is the parade of people following the musicians, who are called the “First Line”. The sounds of the instruments (trumpet, tuba, trombone, sax, banjo and clarinet) are coupled with a snare and bass drum. A Grand Marshal will lead your wedding guests around a French Quarter block announcing and celebrating your event. These parades began back in the 19th century, with organizations advertising for burials and honoring the deceased all in one announcement. Many newlyweds can be seen with their umbrellas, white for the bride, black for the groom, and their guests holding handkerchiefs as they follow the band. For more information on booking a second line band, call Stu at the Howlin’ Wolf, 504-522-9653.

STREET PARADE PERMIT INFORMATION: COST: $50.25 - The Application for Parade Permit, paid for only by Cashier’s Check or Money Order payable to the City of New Orleans.

1. On your smart phone, download the free app at http://gettag.mobi 2. Open the app and aim your camera at any of the tags on this page

COST: $100.00 - Per Officer needed for your escort, payable in cash due on the day of the wedding. The parade route and size will determine the number of officers needed. CONTACT: Officer Don Powers, 504-343-5890 or donp1961@aol.com
