fter taking over the magazine in July of 2010, I could have never imagined the growth that we have been blessed with over the last year. It is hard to believe that it has only been a year since Suzy and I purchased the magazine. For every issue - and we are the only quarterly wedding publication in New Orleans - there are thousands of decisions to be made. Putting together a magazine is a tedious and painstaking process. A great team is a must. Over the last month, with the additions of Valerie Simoneaux, Emmaleigh Wester and Rachel Funel, our staff has gotten immensely stronger and better able to serve our vendors and brides alike. Valerie and Rachel have previous experience working for a wedding magazine and bring with them an incredible knowledge of, and passion for the industry. Emmaleigh, our graphic artist, previously worked for Apple and has a tremendous knowledge of social media and the like. We are ecstatic with the team that we have assembled. We have grown in some ways that may not be noticeable to the reader but are nonetheless critical in the growth of a company. Our distribution has grown to unprecedented heights and is still expanding, our sales staff is stronger and more focused, our social media presence has grown tenfold and our writers and artists now have a harmonious working relationship that results in a better overall product. This issue, we have continued to push the envelope with our pictorial spreads. We have a feature that we call, “Through the Looking Glass,” which is loosely based on an Alice in Wonderland theme. This particular photo shoot took place over 4 days and was a huge undertaking. As always, Nonney and Ole did an incredible job with organizing and executing the photo shoot. We are extremely happy with the finished product, and wish to sincerely thank all of our models,

makeup artists, hair dressers, florists, dress shops and videographers without whom the photo shoots would not have been possible. As a proud father, I would also like to call attention to my two boys, Tyler and Ashton Marks, who each made their respective modeling debuts in the spread. Tyler (10) plays the White Rabbit and Ashton (6) plays the Grey Mouse. I’m so proud of my boys! We’ve been there. The real world experience that we have as wedding vendors in this amazing industry is one of the things that set us apart from other magazines. Most of the articles that are written for the Nola Wedding Guide are based on the experience of the writer actually having been involved in/or seen a particular wedding situation. We want to pass on those years of experience and knowledge to you, our brides and grooms. We have collectively photographed, videoed or played music at, over one thousand weddings. We want you to lean on us for advice. We are here to help you. If you have a question, please don’t hesitate to ask. [ featured couple ]

By Troy Marks

A vendor’s journey to the altar Joe met Jeana Crosby (pronounced GEE-NA) when her roommate was hired to play in Joe’s band, Vedas. Interest was apparent from the start and Jeana invited Joe out to celebrate her birthday. It was on that night that Joe and Jeana shared their first kiss. Fittingly, two years later, Joe proposed on Jeana’s birthday and the wedding planning began. Trying to coordinate the wedding date proved to be an issue due to Joe’s busy wedding schedule. Hurricane season always slows down the wedding industry in New Orleans, and thus a window of opportunity was provided for Joe and Jeana to coordinate their busy schedules to those of their family and friends. After careful consultation, schedules were confirmed and September 24, 2011 was booked for their wedding day.

[ Joe Taravella and Jeana Crosby ] Joe Taravella is an extremely talented and versatile man. He is a writer, musician, photographer and videographer. Of these pursuits, Joe is best known for his co-ownership, along with his mother Terry, of Studio Vieux Carre. Studio Vieux Carre is one of the premier wedding video studios in the New Orleans area. Joe also owns a second video company called Second Line Films, and is heavily involved with coordinating In Focus, an annual video educational conference. Joe has always been involved with weddings from a business point of view. Now, with his engagement, the tables have turned and he is able to consider a wedding from the consumer point of view. Joe‘s engagement and upcoming nuptials give us an unprecedented opportunity to follow one of New Orleans’ top wedding vendors as he embarks on his journey to the altar.

22

The next big task was to find a venue in which to hold the ceremony and reception. Joe’s profession had taken him to nearly every site in the New Orleans area. After considering multiple options, the couple settled on the Board of Trade. They loved the New Orleans feel, the capability of having the ceremony and reception in the same location and the venues proximity to downtown. It was very important to Joe and Jeana that their guests’ accommodations be located close enough to the venue to ensure their comfort. This would also allow them to focus on and enjoy the wedding with a minimum of distractions. Jeana was looking for the perfect wedding dress and would stop at nothing until she found it. She tried on about thirty different dresses at multiple locations. She finally settled on a dress made by Lorenzo from Town and Country. Her wedding dress has a vintage look which matches the overall theme of the wedding. In keeping with that vintage, elegant theme, John’s Tuxedos will provide a very classic and clean tuxedo with a black skinny tie for Joe and his groomsmen. Photography and video was very crucial to Joe, but he wanted to make sure not to offend any of his friends in the wedding industry. The wedding vendor community in New Orleans is small, and there are many talented companies from which to choose. The couple decided

on Artisan Style Photojournalism for wedding day photography, while choosing Atelier NOLA as their engagement photographers. Dan Boswell of Imagique Weddings, a great friend of Joe’s from California, will video the wedding. Michele Adams with Unique Weddings in New Orleans will be assisting in coordination of the wedding day. Music will be provided by Groovy 7, and the Lagniappe Brass Band. Joe’s brother Nick is the guitar player in Groovy 7. Nick will not only carry out his guitar duties, but also double as his brother’s best man. Officiating the wedding will be Jeana’s father, the Reverend Scott Crosby. The couple decided to write their own vows and is anticipating a very personal and intimate ceremony. Flowers will be provided by Diane at Fat Cat Flowers and the cake will be prepared by the Sweet Life Bakery. Joe’s advice to future brides is, “Decide what is most important to you as a couple, is it your guests, your family, your vows, your music? Make sure that you keep your highest priorities in mind when planning.” Jeana advises, “Stay on top of everything and accept help from those who offer it. Do your research.” The NOLA Wedding Guide would like to congratulate Joe and Jeana on their upcoming marriage. We are proud to call them friends and they represent, along with their families, light, love and hope to our beautiful city. We wish them peace and prosperity and pray that their wedding day is a joyful, celebration that befits these two incredibly kind and brilliant people.

[ cultural gumbo ] In New Orleans, we will mix anything together, be it food, music, beverages, etc... Why would our weddings be any different? Our weddings usually reflect and include elements from a multitude of differing cultures resulting in a virtual wedding gumbo. Recognizing and appreciating these different cultural influences is one more way that makes us unique from the rest of the country. Incorporating culture is one of the most important parts of a wedding. It gives everyone in attendance the ability to connect with the couple on multiple levels. Guests absolutely love it when the bride and groom’s personality shines through at the ceremony or the reception. So the question arises, when is culture insertion too much? Too many cultural activities can sometimes complicate a wedding when guests are unfamiliar with the traditions. New Orleans couples frequently take elements of differing traditions and cultures to make their day special and unique. Often, couples will incorporate a charming wedding tradition that can be made all their own by varying it slightly. Here are some examples of different cultural wedding traditions:

by Rachel L. Funel

Recently, non-Vietnamese couples have been incorporating Vietnamese traditions into their weddings by allowing family and friends to visit the bride on the morning of her big day. They can present her with early bridal gifts, assist in preparation, or offer words of advice. It also extends the day for the bride by getting an earlier start to the festivities.

Spanish Wedding Traditions Spanish wedding traditions often seem more like customs passed down from family to family. Sometimes, what represents tradition to one bride differs for another bride. However, within the Spanish tradition, wedding decorations are usually a common denominator. The flower, Orange Blossoms, is usually in some form incorporated into the bridal bouquet. The flower represents happiness and fulfillment. Orange blossoms are not just limited to the bridal bouquet, but can also be found in the reception hall floral decorations.

Typically, Vietnamese wedding traditions are simple in comparison to other Asian traditions. Early on the wedding day, the groom, along with his friends and family, visits the bride’s house. The procession of the groom’s family is led by a man chosen as the representative of the groom’s house. He is followed by the groom’s father, the groom and then the rest of his immediate family. In the procession, the groom and his family (among others) will be bearing elaborately decorated lacquer boxes, covered in red cloth. Inside these boxes are gifts, representing the wealth that the groom’s family will bring to the bride’s family. Gifts include: betel, wine, tea, fruit, cakes, a roast pig, and an abundance of jewelry for the bride. The bride and groom will then serve tea (or wine) to their parents in what is sometimes called a tea ceremony. Each parent will then give advice about marriage and family to the couple. A candle ceremony will follow, symbolizing the joining of the bride and groom and their families.

Vietnamese Wedding Traditions

Spanish custom also encourages the bride to wear a wedding gown with intricately designed detail along the waistline and hemline. The veil is also elaborately designed. The groom often wears an embroidered shirt, handmade by his future wife. In Spanish tradition, the focus is demonstrating the couple’s future happiness and fulfillment through decorations and accessories. If you would like to include some Spanish culture into your wedding, it may be a good idea to incorporate Orange Blossoms into the wedding flowers and/or reception décor. This will represent to your guests your lifetime commitment to each other, and be recognizable as a characteristic of Spanish wedding tradition.

Persian Wedding Traditions Persian wedding receptions are famous for their daylong festivities. There are two separate stages to a Persian

marriage, which can be incorporated into the wedding activities. The first part of the process is called the “Aghd,” which is the legal marriage process. This is closely related to the American tradition of signing a marriage license. Following the “Aghd,“ the second stage is called “Jashn-e Aroosi,” which most typically resembles a modern wedding reception. Following tradition, the “Aghd” takes place at the bride’s parent’s home. The guests are able to arrive and witness the legal marriage of the couple, and also greet the guardians’ for the couple.

into a wedding is to take the elements that fit your personality and space them out during the ceremony and reception. Guests will appreciate and notice the little details. Don’t be afraid to make it “your” day. A little bit of this, a little bit of that. Wedding gumbo never tasted so good.

American Wedding Traditions

Traditionally, African - American weddings incorporate a tradition called “Jumping the Broom.” The origin of this tradition is the abandonment of past memories regarding the horrors of slavery. An African - American bride will also usually change from her wedding dress into a gown at some point in the reception. Dancing plays a huge role in the celebration and brass bands often “second line” the evening to a close. Deciding on which traditions to incorporate into your wedding may be challenging. Consider your personality as a couple. Make sure to not over “tradition” the wedding. The key to combining culture and tradition

Demitasse Weddings

Surprisingly, American’s have become more intimate in declaring love for their significant other. In the United States, it is becoming increasingly common for couple’s to write their own wedding vows. The reason for writing their own vows is to personalize their feelings for, and individualize their commitment to, their partner. Also, wedding ceremonies in the United States usually end with the couple exchanging wedding rings. The ring symbolizes everlasting love and the circular ring has no ending. The couple will also usually share their first kiss as husband and wife in front of all their friends and family.

Audrey Broussard and Jonathan Thompson

J

onathan and Audrey met through mutual friends in November of 2008 and soon began dating. When they met, Jonathan was a 2nd year medical student at LSU School of Medicine and their dating often included attending Audrey’s sorority events or Jonathan’s medical school balls and parties.

On Friday, May 7, 2010, Jonathan proposed on the balcony of Audrey’s favorite restaurant. Watching a wedding reception below, Jonathan said, “That could be us one day. You know how those things get started don’t you?” “How” Audrey asked, thinking he was joking. Jonathan then got down on one knee and proposed! Audrey was shocked and speechless. It was a breezy, beautiful evening – and love was in the air. Audrey and Jonathan were married on May 28, 2011 at St. Stephen Catholic Church with a reception that followed. Pearl’s Place in Metairie provided Audrey with a gorgeous wedding dress. She wore an elegant fit-to-flare trumpet gown of ivory silk taffeta. Its strapless silhouette featured a modified sweetheart neckline, graceful ruche bodice with delicate flower detail, and

40

asymmetric hem, which swept into a full chapel length train. To complete her look, Audrey chose a cathedral length veil of Italian silk tulle trimmed in ivory satin ribbon. Her bridesmaids wore olive-green LulaKate cocktail dresses of silk dupioni that featured a classic, graceful bateau-shaped neckline and v-shaped back. The bridesmaids wore classic peep-toe pumps in muted gold. The bride wore the same, but in ivory. A-Regal Limousines provided the couple with two limos on their wedding day. Audrey and her father arrived at St. Stephen in a Rolls Royce, also provided by A-Regal. Photography by Louis photographed the wedding. Audrey says, “Louis was extremely easy and fun to work with and did a fantastic job. He was also very unobtrusive, which we appreciated.” The wedding cake was a six-tiered almond cake with raspberry filling. It was covered in ivory fondant and adorned with many small sugar flowers of differing coral shades.

w w w .n ol a w e ddin g g u ide . c o m

Try your hardest to remember what your wedding day is truly about because things will go wrong and unplanned things will occur. I tore a huge hole in my veil with my heel while getting out of the Rolls Royce to walk down the aisle. Don’t sweat the small stuff or let anything keep you from enjoying every second of your special day. No one else but you (and maybe your mom or wedding planner) will notice the mishaps, and at the end of the day, you will still be married.

Since Jonathan is an avid saltwater fisherman, his dark-chocolate cake with almond filling was made to resemble a redfish. It was placed on a cutting board and surrounded by gummy worms and molded sugar hooks and lures. A fondant banner at the bottom of the cutting board read, “To Jonathan: The Catch of a Lifetime.”

Todd’s family hosted a New Years Eve party under a huge tent complete with a DJ and fireworks. Just before midnight as the fireworks were beginning, the DJ cut the music. [ wedding insurance ]

by Rachel L. Funel

To have or Not to Have Weddings are becoming more and more expensive these days as costs continue to increase. The economy is certainly not helping anyone’s bottom line, and wedding budgets are being scrutinized more closely than ever. Brides are often apprehensive about weather conditions, but do not earnestly contemplate the prospect of other maladies. But here’s a sobering thought: accidents can strike at any time or place. Calamity has no regard for the specialness of day, meticulousness of planning or financial obligations incurred prior to your wedding day. There are numerous types of wedding day mishaps that can bring about huge financial problems to a couple without insurance protection. Of course, the first example would be: hurricanes or other weather events, vendors going out of business, accidents that take place on your wedding day, etc….Couples need to make sure that their investments of time and money are in good hands. Are you in good hands with Allstate or someone else? You should certainly consider it.

upon booking them if they are covered should an emergency arise. Either way, it’s better to be safe than sorry. With the growing cost of weddings, insurance is starting to look like a good investment, especially given its inexpensiveness. If you purchase insurance and don’t use it, then you have been blessed with a wonderful and accident free wedding day. However, if an emergency does occur, you will be exceedingly happy that you had the foresight to protect yourself with wedding insurance.

Numerous insurance companies offer wedding insurance policies with a variety of coverage options. Wedding insurance is not that uncommon despite its unpopularity. It basically protects a couple’s investment from anything problematic that is out of their control. A good policy will reimburse any expenses incurred by the problem. REASONABLE PRICE Wedding insurance comes at a reasonable price considering the financial loss that could realistically occur. Just like car or home insurance, couples can purchase a basic insurance policy that covers loss of photos, videos, attire, presents, rings and deposits. Policies can usually cost anywhere between $155 and $550 depending on the coverage chosen. It is advisable to purchase wedding insurance twelve months prior to the wedding date or immediately upon reserving the reception venue. Purchasing coverage only a few months before the wedding date might lessen the value of the policy considering the planning process is more than 50% over. Most insurance policies will be the same price 12 months in advance as they will one month in advance. Wedding insurance can cover a multitude of things ranging from site, weather, sickness or injury. But, there are a few things policies won’t cover on the big day: cold feet, engagement rings and wedding jewelry are a few non covered items. Couples also frequently ask if they really need to purchase wedding insurance even if their planning has gone smoothly so far. The answer is that some vendors are already covered for your wedding day and wedding insurance may not be necessary considering that the coverage could potentially overlap. Always ask your vendors

[ health and fitness ] Bride Camp with Spencer

by Valerie Stiebing Simoneaux

Bright and early at 10:00 A.M. on a Saturday morning, my co-worker Jesse and I were set to participate in Spencer’s Bride Camp. We wanted to be able to experience what the work out would entail so that we could relay the information to our readers! Upon arrival, the beaming sun was not backing down. I instantly thought, “Maybe I should have put on some sunscreen before I left the house.” Jesse and I joined all of the women (along with some of their fiancés) and began stretching and warming up.

We then changed the pace by adding weight lifting to a particular obstacle we had to complete. Using dumbbells, we did twenty repetitions of standing triceps extensions, and twenty repetitions of standing inner-biceps curls. I kept thinking of how great my arms were going to look in my dress. After every repetition I told myself, “Keep going”. As I was going through the obstacle, which required a lot of endurance, I was thinking of how this exercise will literally shrink me. Spencer mentioned numerous times throughout the work out that if we are having any aches and pains to let him know immediately, because he does not want any of us to get hurt. However, I felt that all the aches and pains were worth it for the big day! I glanced over at Jesse, who was doing biceps curls, sweat dripping down the side of her face; it motivated me to finish what I started. At that moment I knew that I was not far from reaching my goal. Since the sun was still beaming we walked with our yoga mats to a shaded area beneath a tree. At this point, I began to cool off because we were not in the direct rays of the sun and the pace of our workout had slowed. We had an intense abdomen workout that consisted of toe touch crunches, followed with a thirty second forward plank. Thirty seconds have never gone by so slow in my life! After five more sets, a lot of sweat and obscene amounts of sunlight, the workout was finished. This seemed like the best time to sit and reflect on what I had just put my body through. I had survived an hour session of Bride Camp with Spencer. I must admit, as I was stretching and conversing with the other girls, I started to feel proud. A feeling of accomplishment swept through me as I walked back to my car. I completed something that I had started and had pushed my body to new heights. I knew that Jesse and I would be sore in the days to follow, but at 11:00 A.M. on that Saturday, I was feeling like I could have done it all over again!

Spencer Anderson, with Bride Camp, demonstrated how to accurately perform our first drill, knee high running. When we started this drill I thought to myself that this couldn’t be that bad. I couldn’t have been more wrong. As we went back and forth for five sets I started to feel my heart race at a faster pace. We followed that drill up with three other types of drills that consisted of five more sets each. Had it not been for the water breaks, I probably would not have made it. Jesse trains regularly, so working out with her encouraged me to hang in there.

Alicia Noonan and Cory Ancar

A

licia and Cory are thankful to Mark Zuckerberg. They first met while working for the same company but lost touch. They were reunited 9 years later on facebook. Social media strikes again. After their reintroduction, the relationship proceeded quickly.

Alicia found the dress of her dreams at Pearls Place. She says, “My dress was the second one I tried on. It was an ivory, all lace, strapless mermaid fit dress.” John’s Tuxedo’s provided tuxedos for the wedding. Cory wore a light tan suit in lieu of the traditional black tux.

They went to Playa Mujeres, Mexico for their one year anniversary. On the first night, Cory reached into his pocket and told Alicia, “I got you this ring for our anniversary to tell you how much I love you.” Alicia was ecstatic. As she was trying to get the ring on her finger, Cory said, “And.” “I got you this ring to tell you that I will love you for the rest of my life, Will you marry me?” It was the most amazing, romantic moment of Alicia’s life. They were married 9 months later on April 9, 2011.

Brenda Sison was their pick to photograph their wedding. They loved her down to earth personality, the quality of her work and her reasonable packages. Alicia adds, “We loved her! Our pictures truly capture our story thanks to her. “ Flowers by Kori provided flowers for the wedding. Alicia chose a simple bouquet of all creams: roses, ranunculuses and hydrangeas. The bridesmaid’s bouquets were made up of creams and some pale pinks.

Alicia and Cory chose Southern Oaks Plantation as the venue for their wedding. Alicia says, “They catered to our every need and our guests are still talking about how great the food was.”

[ a princess’s gown ] It’s your day. With your bouquet in hand, the carriage nears and the wedding bells ring in your head. Your prince awaits your arrival and as you take those precious steps towards him, he sees you transform into a princess. Royal Wedding celebrations are known to sweep the fashion industry with great effect. Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, recently took Catherine Elizabeth Middleton, popularly known as “Kate,” as his wife. Kate Middleton’s influence is depicted by her choice of a plain wedding gown rather than the expectantly iconic. Many brides-to-be and fashion experts worldwide eagerly anticipated the royal wedding of Kate Middleton and Prince William. Everyone was trying to predict her dress, make up, tiara and all other minute details. Kate’s bridal gown, designed by Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen, was the most anticipated of all. Kate’s modern and accessible style depicts beauty in minimalism. The McQueen’s ivory satin gown, along with the trademarked nipped waist and the lace appliqué floral detail, will undoubtedly spark a new trend in bridal dresses. Every bride wants a dress that flatters her, and as we know, white can be a stubborn color. This nipped waist gown helped showcase her figure while also leaving room for modesty in its long sleeve lace. A dress that is modest but stunning is perfect for the modern bride; she can flaunt her beauty and remain classy in a gown that fully flatters her figure. This feverishly awaited gown may have the effect that today’s brides are looking for. The sleek, traditional, modern and thoroughly romantic gown is one that will take today’s bridal industry by storm. Your gown is one reflection of how you will be remembered and it contributes greatly to the overall feel of the wedding. It is commonplace for contemporary brides to be concerned with losing themselves in the gown. Even though they look beautiful, sometimes they don’t look or feel like themselves. A coat of makeup and heavy eyeliner can disguise your natural beauty. Many of Kate’s choices aid brides-to-be by setting an important example. Her subtle makeup, jewelry, and hair glow with tasteful simplicity. While you want to look your absolute best on your wedding day, it is important to be recognized for your genuine beauty. How can you choose a bridal gown that showcases the glamorous princess in you? Let’s go over a few main characteristics:

by Allison Rose

The Ivory satin color is great for lighter skin tones; for darker skin tones it creates an even more beautiful contrast. A drop neckline allows you to elegantly reveal your chest without revealing too much. The long sleeve high-collared lace with flower pattern portrays Kate as a flower in full bloom. The train of her gown measures just over 8-feet and the back is finished with gazar and organza covered buttons. At last, the Cartier “Halo” tiara, borrowed from Queen Elizabeth, is paired with the silk ivory lace trimmed veil that extends elbows length. Adding just a few of these details to your dress can make you feel more like a princess. More advice can be given at your local bridal stores that are undoubtedly bracing for royal questions.

Visit Bustles and Bows Bridal Boutique to pick out your Kate Middleton inspired wedding dress.

[ marriage education ]

ying in their bedroom, most young girls dream of being a beautiful bride with a fairytale wedding and a prince charming that loves her unconditionally. After the wedding, the couple’s dream continues as they purchase their dream home, have beautiful healthy babies and live a life of eternal marital bliss. Sounds great doesn’t it? Unfortunately statistics show that this is the exception and not the rule. Despite the statistics of divorce rates, there are ways that couples can prevent making the mistakes that lead them down that path. MONEY, KIDS, TIME AND SEX Studies have shown that couples, both happy and unhappy, often disagree more or less the same amount. Couples usually argue about the same four subjects (money, kids, time and sex), regardless of age, race, or tax bracket. If most couples have the same issues, people who leave their marriage and marry again will often find the same issues awaiting them in their next relationship. How do we break the cycle? Researcher Howard Markman, a psychology professor at Denver University (who was among the first to tape and study couple’s behavior) found that long held feelings of romantic love in America was sending the wrong message to young married couples. The big myth is that it’s all about “Finding the right person; if you find your soul mate, everything will be fine”. Scientists agree that it is very important to marry the right person, but it is just as important to be skilled in the art of conducting a marriage. This takes practice. ARE DIFFERENCES RECONCILABLE? We have all heard the term “irreconcilable differences”, but are they really? The objective of Marriage Education is to address common relationship pitfalls before they occur. One of the most impressive elements about Marriage Education is that it is proactive, and draws attention to situations that will more than likely come up. Dr. Eric Dishongh, of Harahan says, “Learning to listen is at the core of marriage education; not just acquiring the skill, but also listening with a full and open heart, in a way that leaves no doubt that you love your spouse”. Learning to empathize is also stressed. Empathy training includes making a list of the way couples behave during arguments and reviewing them together. Some love to yell and blame, others are non-confrontational and retreat. Understanding these patterns and empathizing with your spouse always leads to a quicker and longer-lasting resolution. Marriage Education differs from traditional counseling in that counselors are usually the facilitators that teach couples how to speak to each other. Marriage Education programs focus on communicating in an effective and loving way without the use of a facilitator. Removing the referee allows couples to learn the art of communication for themselves.

HAPPY SOLDIERS The Marriage Education movement has grown so much, that it has persuaded the leaders of the Federal Government and the U.S. Military to spend hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars a year in an attempt to build stronger marriages. The United States Army has created an initiative called “Strong Bonds” which has remarkably led to a lower divorce rate for U.S. Troops. Happy soldiers make better soldiers! GETTING HIM TO AGREE Getting your man to agree to Marriage Education can be met with an immediate dismissal of the need for it. You may want to start the conversation by talking about yourself, not him. Tell him you want to be the best wife you can be, and would like to have some tools to use to keep you grounded. Invite him to go and see someone with you on a no-obligation basis. If the person is the right fit for you, he will soon feel reassured and his objections will soon cease. Appeal to his love for you. Tell him that this can be a very liberating and rewarding experience for both of you and will help you learn skills that will last a lifetime. It is not about therapy, but class work for a better future. PREPARATION New brides now have so many different avenues to assist them in the planning of their dream wedding. Magazines, websites and television shows are all at the ready and not even the smallest detail is overlooked. The pursuit of the perfect wedding day has driven brides to plan and obsess exhaustively. They are hyper-prepared for their wedding day like never before. But for marriage? Often, not so much. [ wedding dress storage ] It was love at first sight, the perfect fit for your perfect day - your wedding dress. Although you wore it only once, if you take as much care in preserving your wedding dress as you did in choosing it, then it can be enjoyed as a family heirloom for years to come. Symbolizing love and family. Here are a few tips to keep your beloved garment as beautiful as the day you wore it. 1.

You can either have your dress professionally preserved, or you can do it yourself. Either way, your dress should be cleaned within six weeks following your wedding day. Even the smallest stains cause the dress to yellow over time.

2. Professional gown preservation costs between $150 and $500, depending on the amount of soilage. It is recommended to bring your dress to a reputable dry cleaner who cleans about 100 dresses or more a year. 3. If you choose to take things into your own hands, then you must first decide between box and hanger storage. It may be more practical to store the dress in a box, but hanger storage is the best way to prevent hard-to-remove creases. Either way, buy plenty of acid-free tissue paper. 4.

Brenda Sison Photography

For box storage, line an acid-free cardboard box with the tissue paper and lay the hem of the dress in the box. Fold the dress like an accordion, putting tissue paper between each fold. Stuff the bodice of the dress with crumpled tissue. Put some layers of tissue on top and put on the lid (make sure the lid is solid and does not have a plastic window). Store the box in a cool, dry closet. Check the condition of the dress each year, and re-pack so the folds are in different places.

5. For hanger storage, wrap a wide hanger with cotton batting and cover it with muslin. Buy an acid-free cardboard “dress shaper and place it over the hanger. Wrap it in tissue and place the dress over it. Stuff the bodice of the dress and any deep folds with the acid-free tissue paper. Cover the dress with a muslin garment bag and hang it in a cool, dry closet, taking care not to crush it with other clothing. Check the dress each year and wash the muslin cover.

Katy Volz and Joel Mancl

S

ome of you may remember Katy Volz as our spotlight bride from the summer issue. Born in New Orleans, she is now the executive fashion director of Glamour magazine. Although her career took to New York City, she recently returned to the Big Easy to get married. Katy Volz and Joel Mancl met through mutual friends in NYC, and they soon found themselves spending quality time together. For Katy’s birthday later that year, Joel got her their dog, Norman, who is a Yorkie. Katy soon began to have an inkling of where their relationship was headed. Over the next 2½ years they continued to grow closer and closer.

The entire Volz family was vacationing at Glacier National Park in Montana. Joel had Katy’s engagement ring in his pocket and was waiting for the right moment. Finally getting Katy alone, they set out in a rowboat on a beautiful lake called, Half Moon Lake. It was in this beautifully serene setting that Joel got down on one knee and asked Katy to be his wife. It was both romantic and perfect.

Katy and Joel were joined in matrimony on May 28 2011 at St Anthony’s Church in New Orleans, La. A reception followed that combined elements of New York and New Orleans. They used street cars to take their guests to and from the ceremony, and had coffee and beignets for everyone the following day. A sit down dinner opened the evening, and was followed by lots of dancing and partying. The bride wore a Custom made Monique Lhuillier gown and Stuart Weitzman heels. She eventually changed into little Ivanka Trump flats for comfort. Flawless Bride was chosen to do hair and makeup for the big day. Katy said, “They did a great job and everyone was happy. I wish I could have them get me ready every day.” Atelier NOLA | Photography was the official photographer of the wedding. “Nonney and Ole are an amazing team,” Katy says. “Joel and I did not want to spend a lot of time doing group shots, and they got us everything that we wanted very quickly.”

The day of, let it all go and dance as much as you can. The night goes by fast, so try to steal a minute with your husband and step back to take it all in. All of the people whom you love are in one room, and they are there for you. It is truly the best feeling.

Studio Vieux Carre was hired to do video for the big day. Although Katy was initially concerned about being followed around by a video camera, she now says, “They were very unobtrusive and didn’t miss a beat. I’m so glad we made the decision to hire them. No Idea was contracted to provide entertainment at the wedding. After providing some elegant dinner music at the commencement of the evening, the band then kicked it off with Cee Lo Green’s “Forget You”. Katy adds, “Everyone was dancing all night, and apparently after we left, my guests were begging for an encore. No Idea can play it all… We had rock, country, 80’s and everything in between.”

[ the money dance: ]

by Rachel L. Funel

Cultural or Tacky?

A money dance is a cultural addition to a wedding reception. Guests are instructed to form two lines, one for the bride and one for the groom. The guests will then individually share a brief dance with the bride or groom until the next person in line cuts in. At some point during the dance, usually at the beginning, the guest will present the bride or groom with a sum of money. The money amount will usually depend on how close of a relationship the guest or family member has with the couple. Depending on the size of the wedding, the money dance can last anywhere from 5 – 20 minutes in length. After the wedding, it is up to the bride and groom as to how they spend the money. Opinions often vary about whether or not to have a money dance. Most importantly, it should be decision that falls to the bride and groom without outside pressure. Many couples are often curious as to the history of the money dance. After all, requesting money from your family and friends doesn’t necessarily follow wedding etiquette. However, it may be something that falls under cultural tradition for the bride and groom.

inappropriate. Others argue that this is a way for the bride and groom to have a personal exchange with their guests. Some recent alternatives to the traditional money dance have begun popping up. Some guests have chosen to, “pay the groom,” for his time and attention by giving him play money from a favorite board game, or even a packet of chewing gum. Practices such as these alleviate the monetary awkwardness but continue the cultural tradition. The apprehension about having a money dance is underscored when guests aren’t familiar with the tradition. One of the problems is that many couples are beginning to exploit the money dance as a way to simply acquire extra money with no thought given to the tradition involved. This money is in addition to the wedding gifts that their guests have previously purchased for them. These couples are tarnishing the intent of the money dance, which should be simply a positive expression of cultural tradition. Questions that need to be addressed considering the money dance are:

before

• Does the money dance follow your cultural tradition? • Has anyone else in your family had a money dance? • Do you feel that it is asking too much of your guests? • Should you consider the money dance to be a wedding gift from your guests? • Would you consider donating the money to your favorite charity? At the end of the day, a money dance is still and will always be a long-standing tradition in the United States. It gives the couple a chance to mix and mingle with their guests, and celebrates the union of the two newly married individuals. Today’s couples just need to decide: Is the money dance right or us? Studio Tran

The money dance is said to have originated in a variety of countries, typically Poland around the 1900’s. The money dance would take place after the first dance, and the best man would begin the tradition by dancing only with the bride. During the dance, he would pin money onto her wedding gown or veil, and then each guest would cut in every few moments. The dance became preeminent in the United States during the Great Depression, since moneyexchange became a popular means of hiding poverty. Recently, many couples have been omitting the money dance, simply because they feel the practice is

Brittani Cannon Rivet and Brady Trist Rivet

A family vacation to Utah turned out to be the most surprising ski trip of Brittani’s life. Little did she know that her boyfriend, Brady, was about to propose on the beautiful mountain tops of Utah. Brittani says, “It was the most perfect proposal that I could have imagined!” High school sweethearts, Brittani and Brady chose to exchange vows on Friday May 27, 2011 at Our Lady of the Rosary on Esplanade Avenue in New Orleans. Prior to the big day, Brady’s parents chose to have the rehearsal dinner at the Royal Palms restaurant in Harvey. Royal Palms’ Queens Room provided a beautiful, dimly lit, relaxing atmosphere. Brittani says, “We were totally happy with the experience that we had at the Royal Palms. The food, the atmosphere and the service were all excellent.” Brittani decided to go with a color scheme showcasing champagne and mocha through the flowers and dresses. The bridesmaid’s dresses were purchased from Linda Lee bridal. “Linda Lee produced the exact dresses that we asked for; I was very happy with all of the dresses,” Brittani said.

Flowers by Kori displayed beautiful floral arrangements for the church pews, buffet table and centerpieces at the reception. Kori complimented the flowers by hanging crystals from them, and providing an assortment of various shaped vases. Brittani and Brady selected Big Easy Limos as transportation for the night. Brittani and her father were chauffeured in a white Rolls Royce. Big Easy Limos also took care of the bridal party with two matching white limousines. Stacy Marks captured the beautiful night through his photographs. Stacy shot their engagement portraits, bridal portraits and the wedding. Brittani especially loved that he is very fast and produces amazing pictures. The band, No Idea, topped off the night by providing a variety of musical hits. Brittani said, “The music was a great mix from oldies to very recent hip hop. The music pleased everyone in the crowd from my older guests to the teenagers!”

“

Relax!... I became stressed at times and forgot what all of the planning was for. Cherish every moment of the ceremony and reception... dance and loosen up!

Monique Rodrigue and Michael Ricci

It was October 17, 2009 and Michael Ricci brought Monique Rodrigue out to dinner with the intention of asking her hand in marriage. After inadvertently locking himself into a bathroom stall, he invited Monique to join him at the rooftop bar of the hotel. As they gazed at the beauty of the Mississippi River, Michael surprised Monique with a pair of Christian Louboutin shoes. Her attention diverted by the surprise gift, she did not notice that Michael was now on one knee holding the most stunning ring she had ever seen. It was a magical proposal. They celebrated that night with family and friends who were all waiting for them. The couple chose April 30, 2011 as their wedding date. Monique wanted to portray a classic wedding with New Orleans elegance. They used gold hues throughout the wedding and incorporated the gold color through the bridesmaids’ dresses and flowers. When deciding to hire a wedding coordinator, Monique and Michael chose Renee Ganucheau with Event Specialists of New Orleans. Recalling their first meeting Monique admits, “I was a bit nervous, but she is so warm and friendly and listens to your vision for the wedding. She took all of our ideas and turned them into a reality.”

118

| nola wedding guide |

Monique first laid eyes on a Monique Lhuillier V-Neck satin gown in a bridal magazine. Monique found that Pearl’s Place was the only bridal boutique in the state that carried this dress. Monique explains, “Pearl’s Place was so accommodating that they even shipped the dress twice for me!” For her bridesmaids’ dresses, she chose a Jim Helm strapless long dress in a light golden shade. To transport the bride on her wedding day, the couple chose a Rolls Royce supplied by Celebrity Limousines Service. It was beautiful, prompt and the driver was courteous. After providing the cake for the engagement party, the Sweet Life Bakery was chosen to do the groom’s cake. Monique quotes, “The Sweet Life was incredible to work with. Michael wanted the Super Bowl ring and needless to say The Sweet Life delivered.” Beebe with Studio Tran was selected to photograph all of the details of the special night. “Beebe was amazing to work with for our wedding,” Monique said. “He moved quickly and got every shot we wanted. His talent shines through in every picture!”

[ the ceremony soundtrack ]

Living in New Orleans, a city that is full of talented musicians and singers, creates a vast and diverse pool of artists from which to choose your ceremony music. They vary from genres that include classical and contemporary, to specific artists like pianists, harpists, string quartets, vocalists, choirs and jazz ensembles.

Photography by Louis

Before deciding on music for your ceremony, you should consider several factors. The ceremony venue, your budget, and the mood you’d like to project are all critical to making a wise decision. Other aspects to keep in mind are the venue size, and your particular musical texture preferences. Likewise, it is essential to confirm that the musicians or singers are comfortable with your theme and their ability to render it. Do you want to set a fully romantic tone? Or are you partial to a fun out of the ordinary theme? Is religion going to be a central part of the ceremony? Parts of the wedding ceremony to consider for music include: the prelude, the processionals of the bride and the wedding party, the interludes, the recessional and the postlude. These parts of the ceremony are very reflective. It is important for the interlude music to compliment the mood of the ceremony. A traditional example for the bride’s procession is Wagner’s “Bridal Chorus,” also known as “Here Comes the Bride”. A classical suggestion for the wedding party’s recessional is “Canon in D” by Pachelbel. However, a couple of traditional reflective songs include, “Ave Maria” by Schubert, and “Meditation from Thais“ by Massenet. The contemporary bride may consider “From This Moment On” by Shania Twain. The playful bride may choose “When I’m Sixty-Four” by The Beatles. When attempting to select specific songs it may become a bit overwhelming. One way to ease that stress is to solicit your fiancés input. He may have a

126

| nola wedding guide |

certain track or idea that is part of his family’s tradition. Although you may feel a need to choose every song, the good news is that you don’t. Allowing your musicians or singers the freedom to choose from within your genre choice gives them the freedom to perform at their best. Communicate with them and let them know what you would like. Let them do their job. After all, they know what they perform best. Nonetheless, when choosing your musicians or singers, be sure to request a demo CD and listen to the samples on their website. It is also a good idea to schedule a consultation before making a final decision. Bea, from Studio B Music adds, “The consultation is a huge part of getting a read on the couple’s want. There is nothing that takes the place of a face to face meeting.” Also, if you are planning to have the ceremony in a church, consult the coordinator or officiate as there may be rules regarding the ceremony music. Demitasse Weddngs

All plans are finished and it’s time to walk down the aisle. The brief moments during the processional can define your wedding and should be accompanied by the appropriate music. The music you choose will greatly affect the mood and remembrance of the ceremony.

by Allison Rose

From traditional music to contemporary music, there are many ways to set the mood and include family and friends in the ceremony. Since the choices are so numerous, be sure to do your research before letting tradition get the best of you. Have fun with this aspect of planning and your ceremony will undoubtedly be a remarkable and harmonious memory.

Ceremony Music Quick Guide: • Confirm your budget for music and verify how much space your venue allows for musicians. • Discuss with your musician of choice songs that you would like included. Listen to their recommendations. It may bring pleasant surprises. • When researching musicians or singers, listen to demo CD’s or perhaps find live recordings of them on YouTube. • Decide on a genre or a subgenre that is appropriate for the mood you intend to convey. • Remember, it’s your ceremony and the mood should reflect your particular style. Choose wisely. • Have fun, remember to breathe
