is HOT! Summer 2013
[ letter from the editor ] Summer time always evokes memories of fun in the sun, swimming pools, and family vacations. The summer issue of the Nola Wedding Guide is also one of my favorite issues to produce, as things always seem to be a little brighter and bigger. This issue is no different. We hope you enjoy it! Happy summer to all! Our photographers really stepped up and did a tremendous job in the execution of the photo shoots in this issue. Summer of ’13 shot by Oscar Rajo, evokes such a wonderful feeling of bridal elegance on a hot summers day. The immaculate grounds of Southern Oaks Plantation provided the backdrop for this photo shoot. Filigree Entwined, also shot by Oscar Rajo, combines some beautiful lace wedding gowns with the natural beauty and vintage setting of Cedar Grove Tchoupitoulas Plantation. Chateau de l’Amour, shot by Louis Dumser of Photo By Louis, showcases the greenery of the golf course with the grand ballroom and chandeliers of Chateau Country Club. Last but not least, Matthew Foster did a superb job of capturing the beautiful courtyard of Chateau Lemoyne, beginning with the ceremony set up and then as night falls, the startling beauty of the reception set up. It could only be called, Anticipation as there is a palpable energy to the photographs as we anticipate the arrival of the bride and groom. Our “Featured Couple” this issue, Katie Laviolette and Julian Landry, was chosen in our inaugural Nola Wedding Guide “Featured Couple Facebook Contest.” Their engagement picture was one of three that was chosen as a finalist by our staff. From there, it became a matter of which picture had the most likes. In a last minute rush of votes, Katie and Julian won the opportunity to showcase their story in this issue. The office staff was on pins and needles as we approached the deadline to determine the winner. The lead was going back and forth with minutes to spare. I must say, though, that it broke my heart to see anyone not chosen. I wish that we could run everyone’s story. Be on the lookout for our Featured Bride Contest for next issue. Lastly, we were very excited and humbled to be asked to cover Nola Fashion Week. It was a little outside the box of our normal wedding scope, but we were happy to do it. We hope you enjoy the article and pictures. We would like to thank the Nola Fashion Council for the honor.

[ a warning to all brides ] I
am alarmed and concerned at what the wedding industry in New Orleans has become. When I started in the industry many years ago, there was a real sense of magic and honor about just being involved in the wedding industry. To be a part of someone’s wedding day is a privilege that should never be taken for granted. Greed, financial gain, and out of control egos have contributed to making the wedding industry in the New Orleans area less than it was. It has become less and less about the bride and more and more about money and material wealth. These are some examples of what the industry has become: Wedding vendors have become rock stars with the sanctity of marriage being lost on them. Vendor cliques have been formed that exclude and demean everyone not special enough to be included. A so-called wedding photographer was almost jailed for not giving multiple brides their pictures. A vendor in a specialized field is taking 6 – 10 weddings per weekend knowing that each bride is not getting what they are promised upon booking. Wedding bands have failed to show up to play music at weddings
Expect the service that you pay for. Don’t settle for being someone’s 5th wedding of the day. If the person that you are considering cannot be at your wedding due to a prior commitment, then find someone who can. Don’t allow your vendors to drink all night at your wedding. Make sure that the wedding band you hire has the same people in it all the time and has great references. Expect and demand professionalism of all of your vendors including the way they dress, their language, their communication with you, etc…If a vendor is not returning your phone calls, find one who will. You are simply not important enough to them. Do not always settle for the least expensive option when shopping for wedding vendors. Make appointments with vendors that intrigue you on all levels of the price spectrum to see the difference in their work. You can then discern whether the extra cost is worth it or not. Your wedding day should be one of the greatest days of your life and fill you with great thoughts and memories that last a lifetime. I want that to be your experience! There is some good news:
Reception halls are charging brides for a premium bar and pouring inexpensive alcohol into premium bottles
There are still many great, experienced, professional wedding vendors in this city who respect the sanctity of one’s wedding day! Do not settle for less!
The list goes on. It is more important than ever that all brides be extremely diligent in your wedding vendor hires.

Chateau LeMoyne
J
ust one block off of Bourbon Street, in the heart of the French Quarter, lies an elegant boutique hotel, The Chateau LeMoyne. This Creole gem of a hotel is steeped in local history and is the perfect locale to say “I do”. It’s spacious and beautifully furnished suites and townhouses can allow the bride and her guests to have a truly New Orleans experience. We recently got the chance to meet the Senior Sales Manager of the Chateau LeMoyne, Adrienne Breaux, and ask her a few questions about this charming venue. NWG: How long has the Chateau LeMoyne been in business? AB: The building was originally built in 1860 as townhouses. It was designed by James Gallier and named after JeanBaptiste LeMoyne, a famous Louisiana governor. It opened as a hotel in 1970. NWG: How long have you been in the wedding industry? AB: We are relatively new to the industry. It had been a while since we utilized our facilities for actual ceremonies and receptions. We were always available for wedding guests stays and for bridal suites, but we recently reopened for entire events to take place at the hotel.

nola wedding guide
NWG: What types of services can you provide for a wedding? AB: We can provide rooms for all of your out of town guests as well as anyone who would rather stay in the French Quarter for the after party. We also have gorgeous suites for the bride to be in complete comfort and opulence as she gets ready for her special day. We have a beautiful courtyard in the back of the property that is the ideal setting for a French Quarter ceremony. We also can flip that same area in a matter of minutes to be the reception site. There is a sweet cottage room nestled to the side of the courtyard that can house the cake. We also have our elegantly decorated ball room which is available for the reception. It is perfect for a larger wedding or if the weather doesn’t cooperate with having the reception in the courtyard. NWG: What separates you from other venues? AB: At the Chateau LeMoyne, you are treated to the intimacy of a boutique hotel. The grounds are quaint and charming and the property lends itself to the utmost romantic experience for your New Orleans wedding.

NWG: As far as weddings are concerned, do you have any advice for perspective brides? AB: During the engagement, have date nights with your fiancee’. Order a bottle of wine, and promise him you won’t talk about the wedding during dinner. NWG: Is there anything that you want our readers to know about you and Chateau LeMoyne? AB: Our entire staff is here to provide you with only the best service and warm, smiling faces. Chateau LeMoyne is the perfect venue for an intimate ceremony and wedding. The beautiful courtyard features historical columns, a water fountain, and the original brick. The ambiance and character of Chateau LeMoyne is every bride’s French Quarter wedding dream.

[ online registry ]
by Allison Rose
The Tech-Savvy Bride T
he idea of a wedding registry once involved kiosks and long lines in department stores, but those days have swiftly come to an end. Technology has reinvented the way modern brides think of wedding registries forever. The steps that a bride takes, from announcing engagements to choosing a style of china, can now all be done online. Brides now have access to international stores and the convenience of linking all registries into one, central location. Timelines One should start the registry process about 6-12 months prior to the wedding. When beginning, it’s a great idea to send out registry announcement cards. These cards will help your guests to get an idea of what types of gifts you’re expecting, and to better manage their time in choosing one. Below is a registry timeline to help you with organizing and making your registry experience more efficient for everyone. Websites A few websites to help you with the registry process are: myregistry.com, weddingchannel.com, theknot. com, giftregistry360.com and amazon.com. Most of these sites contain options that allow you to create your own wedding page, send registry updates to social networking sites, and consolidate all registered stores into one. When choosing registry locations, be sure to check the exchange/return policy. This important step can save you trouble if you have to return any duplicate or broken items that you receive. Theknot.com offers an interactive checklist, which makes it virtually impossible for you to forget wedding registry essentials. The convenience of these websites is also shared with your guests in that they don’t have to leave the house to purchase a gift. Smart phones now have applications like “Gift Registry 360 Scan & Add,” which has the capability to scan and add items instantly to the bride’s registry.
Organizing Your wedding registry should be comprised of several categories, including: kitchen, bathroom, home improvement, décor, and appliances. Websites will help you narrow down and organize your needs by providing suggestions and subcategories. From these subcategories, it will be easier for you to decide on styles and other specifics. Consult with your fiancé on registry items and decide as a couple on the wants and needs of your future home. It can be tempting to choose only lavish, expensive things to furnish your new life, but it’s important to be considerate of your guests’ budgets. It’s okay to choose some big-ticket
items, but make it a point to have a wide range of gift options at varying price points—that way, everyone wins!
Charity It has been said that it is better to give than to receive. Should you desire to do so, setting up a partnership with a local charity is a great way to start your new life together. Donating your wedding gifts to those who are less fortunate can bring you far more in return than the gifts themselves. This giving is also a great way for your guests to contribute money to an admirable cause of your choosing and possibly continue to give more in the future. Some local charities that have impeccable service records are: www.handsonneworleans.org www.vineyardneworleans.org| 504 467-3257 6-12 months: Begin the process by determining your registry locations and choosing what items you would like. Create a wedding website so that guests are able to keep up with your registry updates. 2-3 months: At this point, be sure that you have chosen items in various categories and price ranges. Send registry announcements and let your family and friends spread the word. 1 month: If you are moving, be sure to update your shipping address at all of your registry locations. Do a final update of your registry. 3-4 weeks post wedding: It’s thank you card time and most registry sites will include a tracker so that you won’t forget anyone.

Allyson Kirzner and Cameron Cronin November 24, 2012 How/When did you meet? Our families have been good friends since before we were born. Supposedly, there are pictures of us from when we were kids, but we didn’t know each other until sophomore year in high school. What was your favorite part of planning? I enjoyed most of the planning process but truly loved checking items off of our to-do list. Did your fiancé help in the planning process? Cameron helped a little with the planning, but I mainly relied on him to tell me, “Everything is going to be ok,” during the few panic attacks that occurred. What was your first dance song? We danced to “Eight Days A Week” by The Beatles with a small addition. The chorus of Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up” was cut in so that we could RickRoll our wedding! At your reception, did you stay in heels or switch to flats? I absolutely loved my blue heels, so they were on my feet all night long. What was your color scheme? Our color scheme was navy blue with accents of orange. Southern Oaks Plantation Flawless Bride John’s Tuxedo Celebrity Limos North Productions www. n o la we ddin g g u ide . c o m

Hannah Chotin and Barrett Macgowan October 20, 2012 How/When did you meet? Barrett and I met in high school in Covington, LA when we were 16, becoming close friends, and when he first asked me out after my homecoming dance, I turned him down fearing it would ruin our relationship. He was persistent and asked again. I knew I had feelings for him too and we’ve been in love ever since. What was your favorite part of planning? Working with Rachel , my sister and Matron of Honor, who had her wedding in October 2011, so her experience with vendors and planning was fresh on her mind. She’s a creative genius too, so she would figure out a way to execute ideas flawlessly. She was a steady voice of encouragement and the entire wedding came together beautifully Did your fiancé help in the planning process? He set up our wedding website, helped with the band, caterer and cake selection. He thought of the idea for our Save the Date, which came out great and we received tons of compliments. He was also a great ‘worker bee’ when we had to put together all of the welcome bags. What was your first dance song? I have loved Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald since my dad played it for us as kids. I introduced Barrett to their music early in our relationship and it has always reminded me of him. We chose “Our Love is Here to Stay” by Louis & Ella. At your reception, did you stay in heels or switch to flats? I brought flats to change into, but my shoes were actually quite comfortable! I found blush wedges since everything was outside and stayed in them the whole night. What was your color scheme? Our invitations and all printed materials were slate gray and white. Gray and white twine was used on the boutonniere and on my bouquet. My bridesmaids were in a bright poppy/coral color that accented all the softer hues of grays, light pinks/corals and white. Sharon Cannon and Kelley Leggins December 22, 2012 How/When did you meet? Kelley and I met during our college years. I was a sophomore at the University of New Orleans and he was a senior at Xavier University. He actually approached me while I was at work and asked if I would go on a date with him. What was your favorite part of planning? My favorite part of planning was working on all of the Do It Yourself projects with Kelley. It allowed us to spend time together being creative and to add personal touches to our wedding. Did your fiancé help in the planning process? Kelley was very hands on during the planning process of our wedding. He helped to pick the reception venue, selected tuxedos for all of the groomsmen and handled all aspects of transportation for our wedding day. What was your first dance song? Our first dance as husband and wife was to Eric Benet’s “Real Love.” We chose this song because we felt like it really put our relationship into words. At your reception, did you stay in heels or switch to flats? After the garter toss, I changed out of my Benjamin Adams “Rhianna” rhinestone heels into a pair of rhinestone flats that were hand designed for me by my mother. What was your color scheme? The color scheme for our wedding was a Winter Wonderland, created by shades of gray accented by hues of blue. Jessica DeJean and Carl Vinterella December 1, 2012 How/When did you meet? We met on the school bus back in 2002 when we were freshmen at Fontainebleau High School. Our parents lived less than 5 miles from each other when we were in high school. What was your favorite part of planning? My favorite part of planning was spending time in New Orleans. I wanted to plan a wedding that showed all of our local and out of town guests the best parts of the city. Did your fiancé help in the planning process? He chose his groomsmen and his cake (that was it). It was difficult for him to help while stationed in North Carolina with the USMC. What was your first dance song? Our first dance was Edwin McCain’s “I Could Not Ask for More.” At your reception, did you stay in heels or switch to flats? I stayed in 5 inch royal blue heels as long as I could tolerate. Then after changing into my reception dress, I changed into royal blue flats. What was your color scheme? My colors were platinum, pearl and plum. Katie Laviolette and Julian Landry
K
atie Laviolette and Julian Landry are to be wed on October 26, 2013 in Riviera Maya, Mexico. They are originally from Mandeville, LA and both attended Fountainbleu High School. Katie now lives in New Orleans and is a Sales and Marketing Coordinator at Crescent City Retirement Group. Julian also resides in New Orleans and is a grad student at UNO. They beat out several other couples in NOLA Wedding Guide’s inaugural “Featured Couple Facebook Contest”. Their engagement picture was one of three that was chosen as a finalist. It was a last minute rush of votes that led them to the winner’s circle, and we were happy to get a moment to sit down with them to talk about their upcoming nuptials and how the planning has gone so far. NWG: How did you meet? Julian: We both went to the same high school. I was a Junior and Katie was a Freshmen. I saw her around school alot and liked her, so I introduced myself. It’s really not like me to do something like that. Katie: I had a little crush on Julian at the time and when he came to talk to me, I was so surprised and happy.
54
nola wedding guide
NWG: Describe your first date. Julian: (Laughing) Well, I picked her up in my mom’s Toyota Previa. NWG: What’s so funny about that? Katie: (Laughing) Have you seen one?! It looks like a spaceship!! Julian: I took her to this local teenage dance club that was around at the time to hang out with some friends. Katie: He called me up after that and said that he didn’t think it would work out betwwen us. So, we parted ways. NWG: Describe your courtship leading up to the engagement. Katie: Well it was four years later and I was a Freshmen at Southeastern Louisiana University and Julian was a Junior at LSU. It was actually the summer going into my Freshman year and I was going to a party. I heard that Julain was going to be there so I HAD to go to show him what he was missing over the last four years! Well we picked up right where we left off and started dating.

saw the ring in his hand. I started crying and snatched the ring from him. Whe we got back home, I took a shower and called my best friend to tell her. Then, we went to Julian’s parents’ house to give them the news. Julian: We walked into their house and acted like nothing had happened. I then said, “We have something to tell you.”
Rick King Photography
Julian: Then, Hurricane Katrina hit. Katie was visiting friends in Baton Rouge at the time, so she just stayed there. I was in school at LSU and staying in the same apartment complex! We spent every day for two weeks together and made it offical that we were a couple. NWG: How did he propose? Julian: I was trying to come up with something original, and I came across a Groupon for an aerial tour of New Orleans out of Lakefront Airport. So I bought it and told Katie that I got this great deal.
Katie: When you are together that long (six years!), you are expecting any moment to be THE moment. So, when Julian told me about the deal the day before the tour, I had a feeling. I didn’t share my suspisons with anyone but my best friend, just in case it wasn’t it. When we got to the plane, we were told that the secretary of the plane company had to ride with us for some reason. I didn’t really think anythinbg of that. Julian: I had spoken to the pilot about my intentions and asked him to go around the Superdome. Katie: When we were flying over the Superdome, my mind was on the ride and looking out of the window at the city. Then Julian turned to me and said, “Katie Marie Laviolette, will you marry me?” I turned to him and
Katie: We already had dinner plans with my parents for that night. So, when we got there, my mom was just talking away to us. I stuck out my left hand and she busted out crying. We got both sets of parents together, as well as some friends, and had drinks that night to celebrate. NWG: How has the planning gone so far? Katie: Well, it’s been pretty easy. We are having a destination wedding on the beach in Mexico and it’s an all inclusive package. We know someone who did the same thing and loved it and it inspired us. The travel time isn’t bad at all and the price was great! We wanted to be different since we are the last of our friends to get married. I like that Julian has pretty much given me the reins. He’s very easy going. He does have some final says such as the second line and the food. Julian: I just want to make her happy. I’m not the best at planning things. NWG: Tell us about some of your vendors. Katie: Well, our travel agent has been great! Everything is pretty much included in the resort package, so I don’t really know the vendors there so well. I got my dress, bridesmaids desses and jewelry here at Bridal Boutique by MaeMe. Julian and the guys are getting there tuxes from here as well. Julian: We are definitely going to bring New Orleans to Mexico. We are going to do a second line and Katie has a black and gold garter. NWG: Any advice for future couples? Katie: Keep in mind what it’s really all about: marrying your best friend. Family just loves to intervene, and can cause alot of stress. We are very lucky to have such a supportive family. We have close to fifty people coming to Mexico to celebrate with us! Our parents, grandparents, aunts and friends are all traveling to see us get married. I think they may just want the vacation (laughs).

Lauren Earles and Branden Rogers December 15, 2012 How/When did you meet? Our family was staying at family-friend’s house during Katrina. She introduced Branden and I so I would have a friend at the new school I would temporarily be going to until my high school was repaired. What was your favorite part of planning? Wedding dress shopping was my favorite! I went with my mom, soon to be mother in law, and best friend. Did your fiancé help in the planning process? He is a go with the flow kind of guy, so he pretty much left it to my mom and I. What was your first dance song? “At Last”, but we did not have a typical first dance. We invited everyone to join rather then just the two of us out there. At your reception, did you stay in heels or switch to flats? I was in flats throughout the whole thing! I’d kill myself trying to walk much less dance in heels. What was your color scheme? There wasn’t a scheme, but the main color was emerald green Flawless Bride Omega Sound and Entertainment Bridal Boutique by MaeMe Celebrity Limos Sison Photo www. n o la we ddin g g u ide . c o m

2 (12-14 ounce) veal chops, on the bone ½ cup all-purpose flour Salt and black pepper 1/3 cup vegetable oil 2 cups arugula Lemon halves
Slicing down with a knife, butterfly the chops. Spread the “wings” on either side and pound out until very thin. Coat with flour, shaking off any excess, and season with salt and pepper. Heat the vegetable oil in a skillet and spread out each veal chop to brown, turning once, about 3 minutes in all. Set on a baking sheet and finished cooking in a preheated 425-degree oven, 10-12 minutes. Meanwhile, prepare the uncooked sauce by combining all ingredients in a mixing bowl. To serve, top each veal chop with arugula and then spoon on the sauce. Garnish with lemon halves and drizzle with olive oil. Serves 2.

s the social media revolution continues to expand, there are more and more outlets for the current bride to research and explore ideas for her big day. With the explosions of Facebook and Twitter, everyone has become much more connected. So forget the era of brides carrying binders thick with tear sheets. With Pinterest, sharing ideas for one’s wedding is just an iPhone or tablet away.

of 25 – 34. It is simply the perfect storm of ideas and perfectly made for the current bride to research everything she could possibly desire to plan her dream wedding. “I LOVE Pinterest and use it almost daily”, says local bride Amanda Louquet! “It is a great source of inspiration and provides insight into the most popular wedding trends because people are pinning the best images and things that interest them right now. I don’t have to wait to see what the next big thing will be, when it is right at my fingertips. It is immediate.” A new word added to our collective conscience is the “Pintervention.” Some girls are so connected to pinning that an intervention is often needed to rip them away from their respective computers. The quest to be on the cutting edge has never been more frantic. Today’s bride wants and needs to be completely tapped in to the current wedding trends and often will be making modifications right up until the moment she walks down the aisle. No detail is too small. Inspiration can be had on items such as cake toppers, aisle runners, gift ideas, etc.… Pinterest is really a microcosm of society as a whole relating to the way that it offers immediate connection to today’s bride. Never has a bride been faced with more tools to aid in her planning process. Decisions that at one time came down to two or three choices, can now involve hundreds of options. Do you need to find some exotic lantern ideas for your table centerpieces? Surely, someone has pinned the most

beautiful lantern centerpieces ever seen and you can view them in one click of the mouse. Yet, some brides are not all that enamored with Pinterest when it comes to wedding planning. For example, there are tons of pictures of beautiful smiling brides set against dreamy rustic settings on Pinterest. But where is a bride who lives in a big city going to find that per fectly serene rustic location in her area? Sometimes, pins may be showing brides exactly what they can’t have, can’t find, or can’t afford. Jennifer Simoneaux says, “Every time I planned a small detail, I would see someone do it better on Pinterest. It became frustrating after awhile. I saw all those great ideas that I could never pull off. My wedding seemed small and insignificant by comparison.”
There is the potential flaw in the social media world as a whole. While the connectivity is no doubt a positive thing, one can be lured into unneeded comparisons between their lives and what they see on the computer screen, which is often not reality. So the following questions really need to be asked… When is it enough? Does the overwhelming plethora of options online take away from the wedding planning process at some point? Does it become too much? Do the details of the wedding outweigh the actual marriage? Has today’s bride’s focus been misplaced? Does the love between two people even matter anymore?

Lauren Sedlander and Ryan Haworth September 29, 2012 How/When did you meet? Ryan and I both moved to Washington D.C. after graduating from college. We were introduced by one of my friends, who happened to be a co-worker of Ryan’s, while at a party in D.C. in 2008. What was your favorite part of planning? My favorite part of the planning process was the (many) hours I got to spend with my sister and mom, especially during the search for the perfect wedding gown. Given their sentimental nature, they both immediately started crying when I tried on the first dress (tears of happiness, of course). Did your fiancé help in the planning process? Ryan was at times even more involved in the wedding process than I was! He found the band, coordinated all the logistical details with the venue, and helped design our wedding web page, among other things. What was your first dance song? David Gray’s, “You’re The World To Me.” At your reception, did you stay in heels or switch to flats? I was determined to stay in heels the entire night; however, by the last hour, I changed into flats so that I could continue to dance. What was your color scheme? It was an array of muted pastel colors: a deep lavender, dusty rose, and stone gray, accented with an assortment of greens. Flawless Bride Pearl’s Place Celebrity Limousine Matthew Foster Photography

Marelda Smith and Carlos Scott September 15, 2012 How/When did you meet? Carlos had just moved to New Orleans from Virginia to start a new job and was searching for an apartment. He came into the leasing office where I worked and I took him on a tour of the apartments. He then completed and application and three days later he moved in. He was so happy that he had a place to live he invited me to lunch and we became friends. One year later we started dating and the next year we were engaged. What was your favorite part of planning? Picking out my wedding gown was the best part. I was with my mom at Linda Lee Bridal. I tried on two dresses and the third dress was the one. I did some customizing of the gown and a few weeks later the sketch of the gown came in for me to see. It was very exciting also when I tried it on for the first time. Did your fiancé help in the planning process? Carlos made a few suggestions and his must haves, for our wedding but he left the final decisions up to me. What was your first dance song? Brian McKnight “Never felt this way” and I remember dancing with my husband and thinking exactly that. At your reception, did you stay in heels or switch to flats? I wore my heels the entire night!!!! I wore a pair of Ivanka Trump shoes that were very comfortable I kept them on even through the second line dancing. What was your color scheme? [ mackie says! ]
“Mackie Says!” is a recurring feature in the NOLA Wedding Guide, and include priceless words of advice from Mackie and his staff for brides who want to look their best on their big day.
You Are What You Eat E ver heard the saying “You are what you eat”? Well, it’s true. With one of the biggest days of your life quickly approaching, you definitely want to look and feel your best! Here are my tips on the best beauty foods and the steps you should take to ensure a glowing and radiant appearance on the day you say, “I Do.” First, make water your beverage of choice. Hydration is one of the biggest players in determining whether your skin looks fresh and supple or dull and dry. Strive for at least half of your body weight in ounces of non-caffeinated, alcohol-free fluids every day. It’s called “Beauty Sleep” for a reason. If you are trying to lose a few pounds before your big day, you may want to pay close attention. Not getting enough sleep affects your appetite hormones. When you become sleep deprived, your body produces more of the appetite-stimulating hormones and less of the hormones that make you feel satisfied. This leads to overeating and weight gain. Aim for 7-9 hours of shut eye a night. Eat clean. In other words, eat more whole, fresh foods. Try to avoid too many processed and packaged foods. Here are five of my favorite foods that are not only choc-full of nutrition, but will also keep you looking young and beautiful. Blueberries-one of my personal favs, this little anti-aging berry is one of the greatest sources of anti-oxidants and also has anti-inflammatory properties that will protect your skin from damage. Salmon-a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, may help to reduce inflammation and redness and prevent wrinkles. Spinach- and other green leafy vegetables like kale and broccoli are loaded with vitamins, minerals and disease-fighting phytochemicals. So they will not only help keep your hair and skin healthy, but they are high in fiber too which will help with your waistline. Nuts and seeds-walnuts, almonds, sunflower and pumpkin seeds are all great sources of heart-healthy fats. Nuts and seeds are a perfect snack to have on hand for those busy days of wedding planning.
A great compliment to my tips is exercise. It’s not only what you eat, but what you do with what you eat. Proper nutrition and physical activity go hand and hand like stilettos and a good handbag! Jodie Muhleisen RD, CSSD Mackie Shilstone, Executive Director, The Fitness Principle with Mackie Shilstone at East Jefferson General Hospital 3601 Houma Blvd. Suite 401, Metairie, LA 70006 Phone: (504) 457-3100, Website: www.ejgh.org
Dark chocolate-Yay! It’s actually good for you! Full of antioxidants, cocoa will increase blood flow to the skin and ultimately increase hydration, evenness, and may also protect your skin against sun exposure. Look for chocolate with at least 60% cocoa.

[ hot color for 2013 ] F
or 50 years, Pantone has been the leading authority on color. They scour the world looking for inspiration pertaining to color. Religion, art, nature or just about anything that’s happening in the world can influence Pantone’s use of color. When Pantone talks color, people listen! One of Pantone’s hottest colors of 2013 is emerald. (Pantone # 17-5641)

as a symbol of balance and harmony. It is also the color of personal growth and renewal, while bringing healing and unity to people all over the world. “Emerald is a color that speaks to everyone”, says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, “green is the most abundant hue in nature - the human eye sees more green than any other color in the spectrum.” So the real question is, why not emerald? Especially for a wedding! A color symbolizing renewal and prosperity, along with beauty and new life, fits perfectly into your special day. Many brides mistakenly assume that the only way to incorporate emerald into a wedding is by having a peacock theme. This is simply not so. The key is to pair emerald with colors that compliment it, but at the same time do not fade behind this rich, bold hue.
Atelier NOLA photography
Pink is a great color to match with emerald. Especially in a blush or light pink. Emerald and pink colors can also easily switch between accent and main color. Blues, like aqua, turquoise, and navy, partner great with the green of Emerald as well. For those brides who prefer to not challenge the richness of Emerald, nudes, as well as tans and camel colors can also be the perfect complimentary colors.

So why emerald? This rich, bold color has actually been used for centuries across all different cultures and religions. It has been associated with other deep, rich colors like purple, as a symbol of luxury and sophistication. Surprisingly, emerald, in many religions, is used

Emerald is not just for jewelry anymore. Incorporate luxury into the day you’ll never forget and start your new life with renewal, growth, and prosperity.
Stacy Marks Photography
Once you have chosen your accent color, then comes the fun part. You can add emerald to any and all aspects of your wedding. If you don’t want to go all out and make your bridesmaids dresses or shoes emerald, you can always incorporate this beautiful and meaningful color in other ways. A small touch in the flowers, bouquets, centerpieces, linens or glassware creates beauty and sends a fashionable message to your guests. A great idea is to add emerald colored lace into the invitations, menus, or even the guest book. There really is no going wrong with this look!

[ the ceremony soundtrack ]
Living in New Orleans, a city that is full of talented musicians and singers, creates a vast and diverse pool of artists from which to choose your ceremony music. They vary from genres that include classical and contemporary, to specific artists like pianists, harpists, string quartets, vocalists, choirs and jazz ensembles.
Photography by Louis
Before deciding on music for your ceremony, you should consider several factors. The ceremony venue, your budget, and the mood you’d like to project are all critical to making a wise decision. Other aspects to keep in mind are the venue size, and your particular musical texture preferences. Likewise, it is essential to confirm that the musicians or singers are comfortable with your theme and their ability to render it. Do you want to set a fully romantic tone? Or are you partial to a fun out of the ordinary theme? Is religion going to be a central part of the ceremony? Parts of the wedding ceremony to consider for music include: the prelude, the processionals of the bride and the wedding party, the interludes, the recessional and the postlude. These parts of the ceremony are very reflective. It is important for the interlude music to compliment the mood of the ceremony. A traditional example for the bride’s procession is Wagner’s “Bridal Chorus,” also known as “Here Comes the Bride”. A classical suggestion for the wedding party’s recessional is “Canon in D” by Pachelbel. However, a couple of traditional reflective songs include, “Ave Maria” by Schubert, and “Meditation from Thais“ by Massenet. The contemporary bride may consider “From This Moment On” by Shania Twain. The playful bride may choose “When I’m Sixty-Four” by The Beatles. When attempting to select specific songs it may become a bit overwhelming. One way to ease that stress is to solicit your fiancés input. He may have a

certain track or idea that is part of his family’s tradition. Although you may feel a need to choose every song, the good news is that you don’t. Allowing your musicians or singers the freedom to choose from within your genre choice gives them the freedom to perform at their best. Communicate with them and let them know what you would like. Let them do their job. After all, they know what they perform best. Nonetheless, when choosing your musicians or singers, be sure to request a demo CD and listen to the samples on their website. It is also a good idea to schedule a consultation before making a final decision. Bea, from Studio B Music adds, “The consultation is a huge part of getting a read on the couple’s want. There is nothing that takes the place of a face to face meeting.” Also, if you are planning to have the ceremony in a church, consult the coordinator or officiate as there may be rules regarding the ceremony music. Demitasse Weddngs
All plans are finished and it’s time to walk down the aisle. The brief moments during the processional can define your wedding and should be accompanied by the appropriate music. The music you choose will greatly affect the mood and remembrance of the ceremony.
by Allison Rose
From traditional music to contemporary music, there are many ways to set the mood and include family and friends in the ceremony. Since the choices are so numerous, be sure to do your research before letting tradition get the best of you. Have fun with this aspect of planning and your ceremony will undoubtedly be a remarkable and harmonious memory.
Ceremony Music Quick Guide: • Confirm your budget for music and verify how much space your venue allows for musicians. • Discuss with your musician of choice songs that you would like included. Listen to their recommendations. It may bring pleasant surprises. • When researching musicians or singers, listen to demo CD’s or perhaps find live recordings of them on YouTube. • Decide on a genre or a subgenre that is appropriate for the mood you intend to convey. • Remember, it’s your ceremony and the mood should reflect your particular style. Choose wisely. • Have fun, remember to breathe

[ wedding dress storage ] It was love at first sight, the perfect fit for your perfect day - your wedding dress. Although you wore it only once, if you take as much care in preserving your wedding dress as you did in choosing it, then it can be enjoyed as a family heirloom for years to come-symbolizing love and family. Here are a few tips to keep your beloved garment as beautiful as the day you wore it. 1.
You can either have your dress professionally preserved, or you can do it yourself. Either way, your dress should be cleaned within six weeks following your wedding day. Even the smallest stains cause the dress to yellow over time.

Professional gown preservation costs between $150 and $500, depending on the amount of soilage. It is recommended to bring your dress to a reputable dry cleaner who cleans about 100 dresses or more a year.
3. If you choose to take things into your own hands, then you must first decide between box and hanger storage. It may be more practical to store the dress in a box, but hanger storage is the best way to prevent hard-to-remove creases. Either way, buy plenty of acid-free tissue paper. 4. For box storage, line an acid-free cardboard box with the tissue paper and lay the hem of the dress in the box. Fold the dress like an accordion, putting tissue paper between each fold. Stuff the bodice of the dress with crumpled tissue. Put some layers of tissue on top and put on the lid (make sure the lid is solid and does not have a plastic window). Store the box in a cool, dry closet. Check the condition of the dress each year, and re-pack so the folds are in different places. 5. For hanger storage, wrap a wide hanger with cotton batting and cover it with muslin. Buy an acid-free cardboard “dress shaper and place it over the hanger. Wrap it in tissue and place the dress over it. Stuff the bodice of the dress and any deep folds with the acid-free tissue paper. Cover the dress with a muslin garment bag and hang it in a cool, dry closet, taking care not to crush it with other clothing. Check the dress each year and wash the muslin cover. www. n o la we ddin g g u ide . c o m

Megan Peterson and Matthew McCluer October 13, 2012 How/when did you meet? We met about five years ago, during our last semester of undergraduate studies at LSU while on a schoolsponsored trip where we took a train from Louisiana to Chicago. He took the empty seat next to me, and we spent the trip getting to know each other and laughing at each other’s jokes. What was your favorite part of planning? We enjoyed the entire process, but our most enjoyable aspect was getting our two families together to help make decisions, especially since they live in different states. We had a few days where we all got together to do some DIY projects for the wedding, and I cherish those memories of sitting around with hot glue guns and a glass of wine. Did your fiancé help in the planning process? Absolutely. We bounced ideas off of each other in the early stages and he played an integral role in selecting the venues, band, and food. In fact, he was totally in charge of selecting and coordinating the tuxedo rentals and in selecting our hotel, and he particularly enjoyed the various tastings we attended for the reception and rehearsal dinner. At your reception, did you stay in heels or switch to flats? I actually wore flats the entire time. My shoes were peep toe flats with a crystal embellishment at the toe and I stayed comfortable the entire night - start to finish! What was your First Dance song? We danced to Al Green’s “Lets stay together” What was your color scheme? We started out without a clear color scheme, but once we picked bridesmaid’s dresses in a beautiful peacock blue, we decided to use mostly creams, whites, and greens, with jewel-toned accents of the peacock blue and a deep, royal purple. We also used metallic accents, through items such as gold mercury glass votives or vases, and everything tied together beautifully. “Wise Bride” will be a recurring feature in the NOLA Wedding Guide, and includes helpful tips and advice from our “Wise Bride.”
Q: My sister is my Maid of Honor and she is pregnant with her first child. She will be pretty close to term for my wedding day and I am concerned that she will actually have the baby the week of my wedding. As happy as I am for her, I will be devastated if she can’t be part of my special day. Also, there will be no maid of honor to stand next to me on the alter. Should I just make someone else my MOH or should I just take the chance of having my sister stay? - F. Korin, Metairie, LA A: It may seem like unlucky timing, but it’s a wonderful thing that both you and your sister get to celebrate such huge days in your lives at the same time! It may be best to choose someone else as your MOH, but make your sister MOH in your heart. She may get tired very easily by then and a wedding day is a very long day. She also may be uncomfortable in a bridesmaid’s dress, though there are some really great seamstresses that can make the dress look as if it were made for her. Tell her how you feel and suggest that she either be a bridesmaid or a reader just in case she goes into labor on or right before the wedding. Chances are, she may be feeling the same way you do. Either way, you both should cherish each other and be happy that you will have big celebrations so close together! Q: The bridesmaids dresses that I like are color block black and white. My mom is insisting that it’s not proper for anyone else but me, the bride, to wear white to the wedding. I think that’s an old fashioned idea and that it’s not all white, so it is ok. Who is right in this situation? - M. Reine, Kenner, LA A: You are indeed right, but not for the reason you think. Originally, bridesmaids were dressed exactly like the bride in order to confuse any evil spirits, keeping them from knowing who was getting married. It is perfectly fine for the bridesmaids dresses to be completely white, but most brides want to stand out. Black and white bridesmaids dresses are classic and will always be in fashion. Q: I am just starting to plan my New Orleans wedding from Colorado and trying to nail down a date. I am really concerned about the weather in general and I’ve been told that it rains frequently and stays pretty hot year round. How am I supposed to plan an outdoor wedding? - R. Ruffino, Vail, CO A: New Orleans’ weather can be a bit tricky. Most venues have contingency plans for bad weather days, but the best thing to do when picking your date is to refer to an almanac. NOLA Wedding Guide has put together an almanac that gives you the temperature, rainfall amounts, and sunset times for each month. The almanac will be a part of every issue, so get your copy right away!

Q: I am a vegan and completely against any type of animal food product. The smell of meat turns my stomach. I want to serve only vegan food for my wedding to avoid seeing or smelling any type of cooked meat at my reception. Am I being unreasonable? - A. Bonura, Metairie, LA A: The food served at your reception is mainly to entertain your guests. As the one hosting the event, you should always have your guests in mind. While you may keep a meat carving station off the menu, asking all of your guests to go completely vegan for the evening is unreasonable. Talk to your caterer to find other options. Perhaps just going vegetarian, but allowing cheese dishes and pastas with creamy sauces to remain, will satisfy both you and your guests. Q: I have scheduled a three hour reception, but I feel as though that is not enough time to do all of the traditional reception things AND enjoy the party. I do have the option with most of my vendors to extend, but at a higher price. Is it really worth the extra money? - S. Cankton, Covington, LA A: It really depends on you and your budget, and how lively your guests are. An extra hour can be an all out dance party or it can be like beating a dead horse. Some crowds will just sit around and eat and not partake in dancing. If you know that your family and friends are big partyers, then by all means, get every moment possible out of your reception. A good rule to remember is if the bride is having a great time and dancing, then her guests will join her.

Wedding Video Streaming W edding video has really come a long way in the past decade or so. Gone are the days of the bride’s uncle with a hand held camera, shakily filming the ceremony while coughing his way through the vows. Today’s wedding videos are usually HD quality and can best be described as wedding films that offer an almost cinematic quality. The better wedding videographers have really advanced the field. Part of the reason the industry has advanced so much is the technological breakthroughs in equipment. Video cameras have continued to improve as various manufacturers release newer and exceedingly smaller versions of video cameras. The quality and clarity of the video, as well as improved sound quality continue to advance. Technological advancements in editing software have also contributed to better wedding video. Different filters and effects can be added to the footage to achieve startling results. A touch of film grain can add a vintage-y element to sections of your wedding footage, etc.…
So with all these new breakthroughs in video technology lending itself to improved wedding video, proud couples can’t wait to show their family and friends their video. They are usually anxiously awaiting the news from the wedding videographer that their video is ready for pick-up. But what if there was no wait at all? What if your wedding could be seen live around the world as it happens. The technology is here. There are a number of web-based services that specialize in the live streaming of weddings.
service from a local Internet cafe.
Marry Me Live www.MarryMeLive.com Stacy Yamaoka and her business partner Christopher Anderson started Marry Me Live in 2009. They had each recently been part of weddings in which key family members could not attend due to travel restrictions or health concerns. The idea was borne of necessity. As fate would have it, Yamaoka and Anderson live streamed their own wedding this past month. Since Anderson is from Texas and Yamaoka’s from California, the couple, which met in New York, decided it would be wise to stream their special day so that everyone they know could attend, at least virtually. Weddings can also be live streamed overseas if needed. Yamaoka recalled one bride who live streamed her wedding to her brother in Iraq, who watched the

Each couple who decides to stream gets a personalized wedding page; from which their wedding will be live streamed, at least two weeks prior to the couple’s wedding. “Most of the time, a wedding couple shares their viewing webpage in an email or on their wedding website several weeks before their wedding,” Yamaoka said. “Facebook and Twitter are also a great way to notify a larger network of friends a few days before the big event.” I Do Stream www.idostream.com Based in Connecticut, I Do Stream offers live streaming for weddings throughout the United States and destination weddings in Cancun, Mexico, Jamaica, Bahamas, St. Thomas and Hawaii. our wedding pictures are a way to relive the special moments of your wedding day for years to come. When your photographer gives you the finished pictures and it is time to get them printed, you have an important decision to make: you can either get them printed at a drugstore/discount department store or you can have them processed by a professional lab.
Live, the prices vary. If you’re on a budget and a newbie streamer, you can rent the equipment for $595, or you can use I Do Stream and your own equipment for $199. A support line can walk you through the setup. Support staff will also monitor the live feed for your entire ceremony. When your customized page is ready, virtual guests will be notified via an automated email. They can also view the wedding at any time for 90 days after the event or purchase a recording for their iPod. To test the live stream before your big day, make sure your customized page is ready and download the broadcast software. Have a friend or relative in another location login to the site and make sure they can view the live stream. The world will be watching.
Though the drugstores may have slightly cheaper prices, the professional lab has the more experienced staff that is dedicated solely to the printing of images. The professional labs do not have seasonal employees who get limited training. They also do not sell anything else other than photo processing. Primary Digital Imaging is a local imaging lab based in Kenner. They work with most of the professional wedding photographers in the city and have been in business for over 50 years. They are committed to providing the highest quality, color photographic services, along with dependable delivery and outstanding customer service. Robbie Holland, with Primary, says, “Your wedding is one of the biggest events in your life. You hired many professionals to make the event as special as possible. As a professional lab, we are making sure that you get the very best quality from your images. This is our primary focus. We are not a store with a lab in the back. Our equipment is state-of-the-art and our staff is fully trained to make sure that the images are printed correctly. [ nola fashion week ]

e, at the NOLA Wedding Guide, always strive to inform our readers on the latest in fashion as it pertains to the wedding industry. We were recently afforded the honor of covering NOLA Fashion Week which took place in early March at the Saratoga Building. We were given access to cover the runway shows of four highly talented designers: Jolie & Elizabeth, Ashlie Ming, Libellule, and Iacono. We saw many beautiful dresses and silhouettes that could easily be used as bridesmaids dresses or wedding gowns. We sent our esteemed colleague, Jessica Bayard, to cover the event and here is her report. As we arrived at the venue, we were greeted by a window scene of two male mannequins dressed in pink, full body Easter Bunny costumes, lying prone on a shag carpet and reading a magazine of collaged images. A beautiful cocktail dress of pink opalescent discs, the main focal point of the display, hovered over the bunnies. We knew immediately that we were going to love this. NOLA Fashion Week, alas, did not disappoint.

In its fifth season, NOLA Fashion Week continues to provide Southern designers with the opportunity to gain recognition, sales and accolades without having to travel outside of the South. The idea was originally conceived from a conversation between co-founders, Nicholas Landry and Andi Eaton back in the spring of 2010. From that conversation and the help and guidance of their third co-founder, PR guru Lauren Lagarde, NOLA Fashion Week was born. The first season debuted in March of 2011 and has grown into much more than any of them could have imagined. “Andi, Lauren, and I work very closely as a team, but my role is producer, marketing, and development”, says Nicholas Landry of Nicholas Landry Events. The three co-founders are also the directors of the NOLA Fashion Council. NOLAFC was founded when they realized that many of the designers needed more than just a platform to showcase their designs. They needed production, showroom representation, consulting on how to grow their designs into a business, and a myriad of support in an industry that

hadn’t been united before. “That is why we have educational workshops that don’t just focus on fashion design, but on photography, hair, makeup, fashion writing, modeling, marketing, styling, etc.”, adds Nicholas. NOLAFC aims to help foster the growth of the fashion industry in New Orleans and acts as a go-to source for finding what pieces may be missing - no matter what one’s role may be in the industry. Nicholas also says, “Andi, Lauren, and I are the directors of NOLAFC, but we have a phenomenal Advisory Board that includes professionals with a wealth of knowledge from fashion, education, economic development, etc.” Over the last two years, there has been incredible growth in the fashion industry in New Orleans. Production facilities like NOLA Sewn are now producing collections for 30 designers in a 4,000 square foot facility on the westbank. The amount of fashion writers, bloggers, and photographers has also grown tremendously. “We can only hope that it continues along the same growth trajectory,” says Nicholas. The national view of the fashion industry in New Orleans has definitely changed in a positive way. While we are still in the very beginning stages of growth here, people are beginning to see New Orleans not

only as a center for music, food, and art, but also as a place where the fashion culture is thriving. Women’s Wear Daily did an article in July 2012 on how the retail scene in New Orleans is making a strong comeback with both national and independent stores, and highlighted the NOLA Fashion Council and NOLA Fashion Week. So what do the co-founders of NOLA Fashion Week think of all this recent attention? “Our hope is that we can continue to work with all of the incredible professionals that we have been blessed to collaborate with and that each of those individuals continues to see growth in their businesses,” says Nicholas. “Our advice for any aspiring designers, models, makeup and hair artists is don’t take ‘no’ for an answer. Believe in your gut. Take chances.” Nicholas continues, “In one of the first meetings we had when seeking advice about this project, a very wise woman asked us, ‘Don’t you think a fashion week in New Orleans is a bit of a cart before the horse scenario?’ Our response was, ‘Sometimes you have to pick up the cart and bring it over to the horse.’ She told us to come back to her if and when we were able to make a truly industry-focused fashion week happen here. Five seasons later, here we stand and that woman is one of our biggest supporters.”

[ is two a crowd? ]

ike anything, it’s always good to know what you’re getting when booking your wedding photographer. Not only do you want to consider the quality of their work, their personality, and fun little details like “printing rights”- but you really should consider what you do and don’t need. I’m often asked by potential clients, “How many photographers will I use to capture their wedding?” I think you need only one skilled, quality photographer who knows how to handle the rhythm and fast pace of the wedding day, someone flexible, professional, and experienced.
There is a faulty belief that “more photographers = better photography”. I’ve seen many photographers advertise dual photographer coverage as a way of hedging their bets on the quality of coverage. Therefore the thinking is that having two mediocre photographers might be able to cover the gap in quality and service. Of course you may end up with a few more images. I just disagree with this type deception. I believe that one highly qualified photographer is much more effective at providing high quality wedding day coverage in a discreet unobtrusive way is the best way to go unless circumstances dictate othewise. Of course this is not true of every photography company that offers multiple photographer coverage. To be fair, some photographers just love working together and have built their own style around working together, I truly respect this particular type of group photography coverage but I very rarely see it. One of the most important things about the wedding day is it’s not about me. It’s not about portfolio building or time consuming photos for my blog. It’s about the bride and groom, it’s about family and for many it’s about Faith. But it is never a glorified photoshoot. Quite often friends and family will be distracted by the number of photographers roaming around the church snapping seemingly random images rather than taking in the beauty of the bride and groom on their wedding day. This is a problem that will almost always occur with more than one photographer. One of the most important things about wedding photographyistheabilitytoremaincandidandunobtrusive. When there are multiple photographers trying to move around the church while shooting literally hundreds of images, it almost always results in a distraction to the main event not to mention the churches frown upon it. If your wedding is small to medium size (150 guest) and your reception is in one big room you probably don’t need a second photographer. One good photographer acting alone can slip among groups of guest without overstaying their welcome in any one place.
On many occasions it is a good idea to have two photographers. • • • •
Do you expect a large number of guest?(Over 250). Do you have and extra large bridal party? (20 or more). Will there be logistic challenges during the day? Are you interested in preparation photography for the groom?
In these cases it may be wise to invest in a second photographer. Not an intern or an assistant or camera holder. When I use a second photographer this person is a photographer first not an assistant. Also I minimize the use of the second photographer during the ceremony to avoid any distractions. If you are considering a photographer who offers multiple photographer coverage here are a few questions you should ask. 1. Why do you choose to work together? 2. Does your assistant make your weddings easier or better? 3. Can you handle a wedding alone? 4. Can the assistant handle a wedding alone? 5. Are both photographers at the same skill level? 6. Is the second photographer mandatory? 7. Is there a discount, should I choose not to have the second photographer? 8. How much of the wedding will the assistant shoot? 9. Ask to see a portfolio of the assistant’s images only. Versus being grouped together. 10. How will they dress? 11. What camera equipment will they use? 12. Can you meet with them before the wedding? Ultimately, the number of photographers doesn’t matter as much as the quality of photographer you are choosing. After considering all these factors you’ll be prepared to have a meaningful discussion with wedding photographers about including a second shooter. Don’t assume you need two photographers because that’s what your friend did at her wedding.

Outdoor Wedding Ceremony Almanac I
n New Orleans, outdoor ceremonies are as common as roast beef poboys. Our subtropical climate keeps our weather pleasant year round and contributes to making our city an ideal backdrop for your special day. However, an outdoor ceremony can sometimes be tricky to plan. Knowing some basic information, such as which months are the rainiest, the average temperature for each month, and what time the sun sets, may mean the difference in planning for a spring wedding or holding off until the fall to get your ideal climate conditions. Also, knowing the sunset times can be crucial for getting your wedding photos just right. We have put together a 2013 almanac to assist you in planning your outdoor wedding ceremony.

[ wedding planning ]
ByJessica Bayard
Pevey Bunch
P
aul and Angela Pevey know how to plan a wedding. They not only planned their own wedding back in 1984, but have since successfully planned four of their eight daughters’ weddings. In Mid April, this year, their fifth daughter will be wed.
The Pevey girls participated in many of the same activities growing up. Angela said that all eight girls were Girl Scouts and that she was involved each time in some degree as a Girl Scout Leader. They also liked the same sports. All of them played basketball and softball for a few years, and some of the girls went on to also participate in volleyball, track, soccer, cross-country, and cheerleading. The girls loved to play “dress-up” when they were very young. By the time the younger girls were born, the older ones would dress up their little sisters, doing hair and make-up, and putting them in Angela’s old dresses. There were many tea parties at the house, too. There were differences in the girls, of course. Some of the girls loved to read, and to others it was a chore. Some naturally excelled in school, while others struggled to keep their grades up. Two of them graduated Valedictorian of their high school. When it came time for chores, a few of the girls didn’t mind, they would even help with yard work. One, though, hated doing outdoor work and would beg Angela to give her any inside job instead. Even though Theresa and Paul never entered their girls into any pageants while they were growing up, two of them chose to enter the Louisiana Strawberry Festival Queen pageant, and won: Rebecca in 2006 and Theresa in 2010. It was a huge honor for them to represent Ponchatoula for the years that they were queens as they had countless opportunities to promote their hometown and their love of the strawberry industry.

Their family may be big in number, but they are even bigger in heart. The girls range in age from 37 to 19, and are comprised of Paul’s two daughters from a previous marriage, their 5 children together and their niece (whom they raised since she was six years old). The words half sister and cousin were never used to distinguish one child from the others. All eight girls were raised as true siblings. They were all one family, under one roof, of course, until the girls started to get married.
Then two of the girls, Anna and Laura joined a sorority, Theta Phi Alpha, during their college years. None of the others chose to do so. Theresa says that no matter the girls’ similarities or differences, one thread ran through them all: their love for one another and love for their family. She recalls, “Easter and Christmas mornings have always been special for all of us! Even now on those days we are all together for at least half of the day, sharing meals, stories, and many laughs. All of my girls are wonderful helps to me in the kitchen. When they were younger, we invited an elder couple who never had children to be with us on every Easter and Christmas morning to share our joy. It was a rule in our home that none of the girls could come down the stairs until they all did so together after our guests had arrived (usually as early as 7am). I will always remember the excitement of those moments when they could finally come down!”

Matthew Foster Photography
“The Catholic faith was a huge part of their upbringing, as well as family prayer. I even home schooled the 6 younger girls for 3 years, primarily to root them deeply in faith and family. Even though we’re far from a perfect family, and we’ve had our share of ups and downs, I can honestly brag that, as a general rule, the girls are not only sisters, but best friends.” As the girls started to get engaged, they also demonstrated the same similarities and differences when it came to wedding planning. The choices of each vendor was very specific for each daughter. If they had a strong preference as to what they wanted, the Peveys did the best that they could, based on what they could afford. All of them have been married at St. Joseph Church in Ponchatoula. It was important for them to not only be married in the Catholic church, but in their own church parish. Stacey and Jennifer used the same photographer, but each of the other three girls chose different ones based on the style of photography that they liked best. There wasn’t a videographer for the first two weddings, but two different ones were used for the next three weddings. The first three weddings had a DJ verses a band at the reception. Anna wanted the band, Troy Marks and No
Idea, and they were such a hit that Theresa decided to use them too. Stacey had her reception at St. Joseph Church gym. It was one of the largest facilities in Ponchatoula at the time, and her wedding had approximately 500 guests. When Jennifer got married in 1996, wanted a very small family wedding. Her reception was in a room above the Peveys’ business, Paul’s Cafe. Rebecca (about 1200 guests) and Anna (about 800 guests) both had their receptions at Chesterton Square since it is the largest reception venue in Pontchatoula. Theresa will also use the facility in April. For catering, the first two weddings were done by family and friends, as many weddings were done back then. Paul is a local volunteer fireman, and his fireman friends cooked up some of their large pot specialties, with many family and friends filling in with the rest. For the next three weddings, they used the restaurant right next door to Chesterton Square. The last two girls used the same bakery for their cakes and they will be called on again in the future. So will the company that produced all of the other girls’ invitations, printed napkins and thank you notes. Angela says that the planning process is definitely
www. n o la we ddin g g u ide . c o m
nola wedding guide

Matthew Foster Photography
getting easier. “I keep better notes now than I did for the first three! At the time of those weddings, I had many young children in an active school and sports household, and did not write down everything. Now, I make Excel spreadsheets and list as much as I can. It helps me to see at a glance what is left to do, and all that I have done. It also helps to refer back to notes from past weddings.” She has saved and reused several items, even loaning them to many friends: a silver cake plate, a large punch bowl, a wooden cake plate for the groom’s cake, 30+ large vases, ring bearer pillows, champagne glasses, small silverware trays, etc. For the last wedding, they added a bride’s “Second Line Umbrella” to the list! The first four daughters to be married all had different wedding dresses. Now, the fifth one has chosen to make a few adjustments to one of her sisters’ dresses. It saved enough money that she was able to get the band she wanted. Of course Angela and Paul have some much garnered advice for other first-time wedding planning parents: 1. Take notes! Brainstorm in the beginning about what they would like to have at their wedding, down to
150
nola wedding guide
every detail. That includes church & reception decorations, wedding favors, registries, food, drink, etc. Also decide how many guests you can invite. Then, set a budget and begin getting prices. Soon the brides learn to cross some things off of their “wish” list that wasn’t too important to them, and make certain that the things that are important can happen. I encouraged that the girls chose invitations that only require one postage stamp; that saved a lot considering we usually send out over 500 invitations. 2. Make sure the church and reception hall are the first two things to book. Then, begin getting other vendors, putting down payments, and signing contracts. 3. Make lists of what needs to be done and don’t put anything off that can be done early. Try to think of even the small details and write them down. Begin checking items off your “to do” list as soon as you can. 4. Pray for guidance and wisdom to help your daughter to smile when she becomes overwhelmed with the decisions and planning. Angela also had some advice for her daughters when it came to their big day. “I share with each of my daughters my experience and attitude from my own wedding day,” she continued, “I told myself (back then) that there would probably be things that may happen unexpectedly or not as I had planned, that it
w w w .n ol a we ddin g g u ide . c o m

may not be a perfect day in every aspect, and that I would not allow anything that happened to dampen my spirits on my wedding day. However, my wedding day WAS perfect in every way!” In sharing this story with her daughters, it was her desire that they, too, would choose happiness and truly enjoy the entire day. “Likewise,” she says, “parents should enjoy the day, too! It seems that the beginning of the wedding day is busy in last minute business, but once the ceremony is underway, you truly enjoy the whole scene! It is amazing to watch my husband walk each girl down the aisle - I can’t find the words that a mother feels at that moment! Later, at the reception, Paul & I are often overwhelmed with gratitude for the people who come out to share in this special day with us and our family. We enjoy getting a brief visit with as many of our guests as we can while at the same time, getting glimpses of our daughter’s happiness in her first few hours with her husband.” “Paul & I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to experience it all so many times.”

[ second line parade ]
Atelier NOLA photography
If you want a traditional New Orleans wedding, you want to hire a brass band for a Second Line Parade. It is a way of expressing the unique local flavor of the city. The Second Line is the parade of people following the musicians, who are called the “First Line”. The sounds of the instruments (trumpet, tuba, trombone, sax, banjo and clarinet) are coupled with a snare and bass drum. A Grand Marshal will lead your wedding guests around a French Quarter block announcing and celebrating your event. These parades began back in the 19th century, with organizations advertising for burials and honoring the deceased all in one announcement. Many newlyweds can be seen with their umbrellas, white for the bride, black for the groom, and their guests holding handkerchiefs as they follow the band. For more information on booking a second line band, call Stu at the Howlin’ Wolf, 504-522-9653.
