From the Editor Welcome to our summer issue! I t has always been my goal to provide every newly engaged bride with the resources necessary to make intelligent choices while planning her wedding. Well, we have a plethora of great features and photo spreads in this issue that will surely inspire and enlighten all of you. Since planning your wedding can sometimes be stressful, it is my aim to relieve some of that stress from your lives. So get comfortable, grab your favorite beverage, and spend some quality time with the Nola Wedding Guide. You will be glad you did! I firmly believe that the photo spreads in this issue are exemplary and are our best to date. The venues, designers, photographers, videographers, dress shops, florists, hair and make up artists, graphic artists, models and my staff all had to work together as one to ensure that the shoots turned out beautifully. Weeks of meticulous planning went into these photo shoots, all in the pursuit of that one spellbinding spread or picture. Well, we are blessed to have an abundance of great photos in this issue. Thank you to all of you who contributed to these shoots. You have all outdone yourselves! I t was a topic of much debate in the Nola Wedding Guide office as to whether or not to feature a boudoir shoot in this issue. We were genuinely concerned that people would be upset over the photographs. After careful consideration, I decided to run the spread because of the beauty of the images, and the recent, national resurgence of boudoir photography. While the images are undoubtedly risquĂŠ, photographer Robert Faust did an unbelievably delicate job of capturing the models in an elegant, classy way that is in no way offensive or immoral. We hope that you enjoy the spread as much as we enjoyed doing it. I would like to personally wish all of you a blessed wedding day. Enjoy the summer! See you all again in July!

Planning Marriage License When you apply for your marriage license, at least one party must appear in person. He or she must have all the necessary information and documents outlined below.

1.State law requires a cerfitied copy of each

party’s birth certificate, if born in Louisiana. Passports are not acceptable. If either party was born out-of-state, a waiver can be submitted. Do Yourself a Favor by Picking the Right Wedding Favors

I n planning a wedding down to the

minutest detail, often brides overlook the importance of finding the perfect wedding favors. Though it may seem trivial in the grand scheme of nuptial design, there are two key reasons why a bride-to-be should put just as much thought into her favors as she puts into her dress. First of all, the right favor can reflect the bride’s personal style by commenting subtly on the overall theme of the wedding. Secondly, and more importantly, a unique favor can leave a lasting impression on guests and family. The first thing for a bride to consider when shopping for that perfect favor is the statement that she wants to make. For instance, monogrammed coasters may be perfect for suggesting a fun, flirty style with just a hint of personal elegance. If the wedding has a definite theme, for example, vintage, lace sachets filled with old-fashioned candy like Jordan almonds might be just the thing to help communicate an antique spirit. Another point to ponder is cost. Taking personal budget into consideration, favors should cost anywhere from $1 to $5 a favor, with $2-$3 being the average price range. (sources: TheKnot.com and Pinterest.) However, finding the perfect favor doesn’t have to mean breaking the bank. Many of today’s brides are adapting more of a D.I.Y. (do-it-yourself) approach

to wedding planning, and this is especially true when it comes to wedding favors. Many of the more popular New Orleans favors that are found at weddings today, including personalized mini Tabasco bottles and individually wrapped pralines, can be purchased in bulk to accommodate the amount of guests, and then the labels can be made separately by the bride herself or by a local stationer at a cost much lower than if she were to purchase them ready-made from specialty companies. Knowing where to find the right favors can prove to be the bride’s greatest challenge of all. Locally speaking, there are not many stores that specialize in wedding favors-at least not in the New Orleans area. (I know this from my own attempts to locate stores while planning my wedding.) In such situations, the ability to think outside of the box can be a bride’s greatest asset. Depending on where the bride chooses to register, usually that company - assuming that the bride consents/opts-in - will sell her information to vendors that handle things like favors. Bed, Bath, and Beyond, for example, partners with several direct marketing companies for wedding and party items that mail magazines right to brides’ homes. These magazines contain various assortments of favors in all categories, colors, and price ranges, which can be helpful for some.

Searching online may be the best alternative for the bride who aspires to have the most distinctive of favors. Pinterest, eBay, and kateaspen.com are all recognized sources of creative stimuli. Even if she decides not to buy favors online, a bride can at least get some inspiration and a few ideas and then visit stores like Michaels, JoAnn’s, and Hancock Fabrics to get the materials to do it herself.

Hunting for favors can be tedious, but in the end not settling for the same old favors that she saw at all of her friends’ weddings can turn a bride into a bold trendsetter. With just the right amount of consideration and attention to detail, the small keepsake can be the very thing that will help her family and guests remember, as well as cherish, the event for years to come. And who knows? oasting a diverse assortment of locales & scenic backdrops, including the French Market, the Riverwalk, Warehouse District, and the notoriously festive Bourbon Street, New Orleans deservedly holds the number two spot for destination weddings in the United States. With its surplus of scenery and cultural charm, New Orleans in itself is an enticing selling point for any bride-to-be. The French Quarter in particular, designated as a National Historic Landmark, is a major tourist destination and continues to add personality to the already alluring downtown area. In order to demonstrate just how much conviction we at NOLA Wedding Guide have when it comes to believing in the

The weather was especially warm and blustery downtown on the day of our special shoot. Luckily, photographer Oscar Rajo knew exactly how to maneuver the erratic conditions. In fact, he managed to capture every nuance and subtlety of a day in the French Quarter with his discerning eye and humble nature. His technique and knowledge of lighting made the photographs look as though they were posed in a studio, when if fact, they were shot on a busy street with constantly changing lighting conditions, which was no easy feat. We were also quite concerned about the numerous wardrobe changes on location, but thanks to Oscar’s boy-scout like preparedness - he brought a pop–up tent - they were a breeze!

s sundry as our settings were, we wanted to match the variety of surroundings with an array of fresh, distinctive summer looks. With the help of our local wedding boutiques, Pearl’s Place and the Bridal Boutique by MaeMe, our vision unfolded effortlessly. Each fun, flirty wedding dress captured a unique facet of the city, from the perfect dress for a Mississippi Riverboat cruise on the Steamboat Natchez, to a Steel Magnoliaslike peplum two-piece. We even added a touch of pink to match the ambiance of the Piazza d’ Italia. Local makeup artist and hair stylist, Jessica, from Make Me Up, provided a fresh-faced look

for our model, Annsley, with light, bright eyes and cheeks, as well as a colorful lip. The inspiration for the hair came from a 1940’s poolside photograph of Rita Hayworth, with her long, curly locks parted and pinned sultrily on the side. The bouquets used for the shoot came from the master florists at Arbor House Floral. Barry and Joey’s creations were unique and inspiring. They said of their inspiration, “Summer in New Orleans can be described in many ways: hot, sexy, tropical, fragrant, bright, carefree, fun and timeless. All of these words helped to focus our bouquet designs for this shoot.”

A bit about each bouquet: C a re f re e & f u n - This bouquet is whimsical and fun, using bright tangerine gerbera daisies. The center of the gerbera is studded with yellow button mums. The fun begins with swirls of turquoise wire and a bit of turquoise ribbon. B r i g h t & f r a g r a n t - Imagine walking through the French Quarter in the middle of summer as the fragrance of flowers drifts from the many beautiful courtyards. We have captured that with this bouquet which features fragrant, pink David Austin garden roses, fuchsia garden spray roses and fuchsia dahlias, all accented with graceful swoops of honey bracelet. tro p i C a l & S e x y - In this bouquet we used the sensuous curves and lines of pink Obaki anthirium to convey sexiness. Scattered throughout are tropical lime green cymbidium orchids on a base of luscious green hydrangea. t i m e l e S S - Nothing can beat the timeless character of New Orleans. We have captured that in this bouquet which features garden succulents, poppy pods, classic white roses, dusty miller, and lacy white scabiosa. h o t & C o l o r f u l - This bouquet features the vibrant tones of orange and is balanced by its complimentary tone of lavender in a modern version of the cascading bouquet. We knew each other from college at the University of Alabama, but we did not start dating until we ran into each other, literally, one night while out in Atlanta in October of 2011. My favorite part of planning the wedding was getting to see pictures and hear stories from family membersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; weddings and hearing their planning advice. Those funny and interesting stories did not come out until I got engaged.

Stephen helped out in the planning process as well. He was very determined to make sure our food was good. Stephen laughed during our vows. He put the ring on my finger way before the officiant told him to! We all had a good laugh, as he was clearly nervous. I definitely changed into flats for the reception. I wanted to be comfortable while dancing, which we did a lot of.

Tiffany is from New Orleans, and Kern is from the Caribbean island of Trinidad & Tobago. Many of their guests were first-time visitors to New Orleans and came from England, Africa, Dallas, New York, Florida, Trinidad & Tobago, and many other cities and countries to attend their wedding. Kern and I met on Feb. 7, 2009 in Dallas, TX at a 7-Eleven! On the day we met I was on my way to the gym, but I forgot my water! So, I stopped at a 7-Eleven to pick up bottled water. As I was getting my water, a handsome guy asked how I was doing. He was so polite and handsome! We exchanged phone numbers, and the rest was history!

Our favorite part of planning was putting together a meet and greet for our wedding party. We created a newsletter for them that had every detail of our wedding - times, place, rehearsal dinner info, etc. Having the meet and greet six months before the wedding was the best. We were able to get ideas and feedback from the wedding party to finalize things. It was a great experience, and I think every bride should have a meet and greet before her big day, especially if everyone is from different cities. Believe it or not, my husband played a huge part in planning our wedding. He helped so much, from the newsletter we created, to picking out venues, photographers, wedding favors, etc. I could not have done it without his help. We were both wedding coordinators for our own wedding. As the bride, I cried and laughed reading my vows! My husband did not cry, but was super serious. It was like he was trying so hard not to cry because I could hear the emotion and the passion as he was saying his vows to me. I actually stayed in my 5 inch heels at the reception! My shoes were specially made for my feet, so I was able to walk in them.

With the help of the incredibly talented and gracious Kim Wise of Kim Starr Wise Floral Events, we created the perfect indoor garden party. Fresh, colorful florals and lots of vibrant greenery adorned the tablescape. Kim describes her inspiration: “I had a floral conference in California early in the year and I know that garlands are all the rage right now. We learned about an ‘urban organic’ look that I translated into the garden style.”

he next step in bringing our shoot to life was finding the right elements to bring the outdoorsmeets-indoors theme all together. The linens had to be vibrant to compliment the many bouquets of color that went into the grand, table-long centerpiece. The dinner plates from Perrier Party Rentals were more conservative and featured a gold lining, while the dessert plates brought in all of the colors of the florals, tying everything together. Kim adds, â&#x20AC;&#x153;The garden party theme came about when I was looking for plates. I love botanical prints, and I started scouring the Internet for affordable butterfly/floral botanical plates. I wanted something pretty and unique, and I came upon these beautiful botanical bird plates. Then I went off on a tangent as I often do. Once I had those guys in all of my various online shopping carts, I changed the concept and design.â&#x20AC;?

he birdcages, filled with green vines and adorned with butterflies and birds, added another trendy and ethereal touch. The placement of the birdcages next to the golden ornate mirrors that were already in the venue was simply perfect!

Butterflies also graced the simple and elegant cake provided by Ye Olde Bake Shoppe. An upside down metal bucket doubled as a cake stand with tree bark and a small bird preceding it. More metal buckets with flowering plants surrounded a side of the branch-decorated cake to complete the scene. Due to the over-abundance of botanicals used to create the look for our shoot, we simply could not list them all. However, here are some of our favorites: flowering acacia, star fern, solidago, monte casino, thistle, cyclamen, lavender, succulents, pansies, phalaenopsis orchids, lotus pods, lichen branches, garden and spray roses, huckleberry, tree fern, geranium, tulips, daffodils, ranunculus, camellia and lavender.

My fiancé and I met in high school. He pursued me for almost a year before I finally agreed to go out on a date with him, and we’ve been together ever since. My favorite part of the planning process was dress shopping. My fiancé helped with some parts of the planning, like picking out the venue, the food, and the cake. For the other things my mom or bridesmaids helped out. Neither one of us cried during the vows, though there was some laughing during the ceremony. I switched into platform flip-flops after our first dance.

Step 3: Familiarize Yourself with the Local Weather. One word comes to mind when describing New Orleans weather - temperamental. The sooner you understand this concept, the more prepared you’ll be. Don’t be surprised if your New Orleans winter wedding is unusually warm or if your spring reception gets rained out; that’s just how it is here. My advice: you can’t go wrong with an indoor wedding and reception! Outdoor weddings in the summer here are usually extremely hot. If you are set on an outdoor wedding in the summer, you may want to rent an airconditioned tent or find a way for your guests to stay cool. They will thank you for it!

Step 4: Research and Hire a Local Event/ Wedding Coordinator. This one is a no-brainer. These are the real experts in the wedding industry. Chances are they’ve coordinated and planned numerous destination weddings in NOLA before, so they will know how to find the best the city has to offer. New Orleans has an extremely diverse selection of vendors that an experienced coordinator can help you to sift through.

Step 5: Secure Hotel Blocks For Guests. There are a plethora of unique hotels in the city. If possible, it would be ideal to recommend accommodations for all of your guests at the same venue. This keeps everyone in one place and can make transportation to and from the wedding site much easier. Perhaps a shuttle can be arranged for this

purpose. Locating hotel accommodations near your wedding site will also add to the convenience of your guests overall experience and also avoid any potential traffic problems. Keep in mind that many hotels offer great discounts on room blocks and may also throw in a perk or two if you block off enough rooms.

My favorite part of planning was deciding how all of the components were going to tie together that day, and of course, the food tasting. Jamey lynn labranche & J osh trosclair NWG: How did you meet? Jamey Lynn and Josh won our quarterly Nola Wedding Guide Featured Couple Facebook Contest with over 460 votes. Jamey LaBranche is an elementary teacher in Laplace, and Josh Trosclair is an electrician. They will be exchanging their next summer.

The Big Day: June 6, 2015

Jamey: Josh and I met at St. Charles Catholic High School and became close friends. Truth be told, I had a big crush on Josh in high school, but after graduation we lost contact. One day I was driving back from college and decided to take Airline Highway to go home. I ran into my best friend at a gas station and upon leaving, saw Joshâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s truck in the turning lane. I let him pass in front of me, and he flashed me one of his contagious smiles before continuing on his way. When I arrived home, I looked at my phone and saw I had a text message from Josh. I truly believe that had I taken a different way home, or chosen a different gas station, or hadnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stopped to talk to my best friend, Josh and I would have never crossed paths again. w w w . n o l aw ed d i n g g u i d e. co m

NWG: Describe your first date. Josh: For our first date, I met Jamey at a restaurant called Kobe Sushi and Steakhouse while she was working. While I had dinner there, we talked the whole time. Jamey: I couldn’t stop smiling while he was there. He stayed until I got off of work and asked me if I wanted to go see a band at a local bar in LaPlace. NWG: Describe your courtship. Jamey: Josh and I started dating in March of 2012. Josh: But it feels like we have been dating forever. (finishing her thought) Jamey: It did not take me long to realize that he was the man I wanted to marry. It’s one of those things you just know; you feel it in your heart. I never knew I could love someone the way that I love him. My family and friends absolutely love Josh. We enjoy doing the same things and also trying new things. Last year for his birthday I took him skydiving. We are always up for a new adventure. Life with him just makes perfect sense. Josh: It doesn’t really matter what we are doing. As long as we are together, we are having fun and laughing. NWG: What is your favorite trait in him/her? Jamey: There are so many things that I love about Josh; it’s so hard to pick one. I would say my favorite thing about Josh is his oversized, loving heart and his sweet soul. He is genuinely the sweetest soul I have ever met in my life, and he has the biggest heart I have ever

happen! I started off my Sunday morning by attending mass at Ascension of Our Lord Church as I do every Sunday, which is the church that I have attended since I was born. This church is where I received the sacrament of Baptism, Reconciliation, Communion, Confirmation, and now, the sacrament of Holy Matrimony; this church is very special to me and VERY close to my heart. Josh dropped me off at church that Sunday morning and told me he would be back to pick me up. Normally when he picks me up, I just walk to his truck in the parking lot, but not this time. This time he waited for me right outside of the church, so I knew something was going on. As I walked closer to him, I noticed his cousin/ my friend standing off in the distance trying to hide with her phone. When I got close to him, he got down on one knee in front of the church and said, “Jamey Lynn LaBranche, will you marry me?” Of course I said, “YES!” To top it off his cousin/my friend filmed the whole thing and took pictures!

encountered - not to mention he has the most contagious smile I have ever seen! Every time he smiles I just have to smile. Josh: My favorite traits in her are her strength to see the good in everything and her beautiful smile, which always makes my day. NWG: How did he propose? Josh: The way that I had intended to propose didn’t go as planned, but I think I made a bigger and better impact. Jamey: This may not seem like the perfect proposal to some, but this is my perfect proposal. NWG: How has the planning gone so far? Jamey: Planning is coming along very well. I like to think I have a good bit done, but then I think of ten other things that need to be done. Sometimes it can get stressful and overwhelming, but in the end I know I’ll still be marrying Josh. That’s all that really matters anyway. Josh: Jamey has been doing most of the planning, but there are certain things that I want and have had a say in. She has great tastes, so I trust her decisions. NWG: Any advice for future couples? Jamey: My advice for future couples would be to always communicate with each other, to always be honest with each other,

never try to be anything but yourself, never go to bed angry with each other, and to always say “I love you.” Josh: Relationships should not feel like work, but both partners have to be putting forth the effort to make the relationship grow. The best advice I can give to future couples is to always respect each other, always communicate with each other, and to always make sure that your partner knows how much you love him/her.

Isn’t that a heavenly thought? Robert Dula’s childhood dream of being a gondolier was realized in 2003 when work on his authentic Venetian gondola began in Venice, Italy. Nola Gondola began operating in 2004 and brought with it the allure and romance of a relaxing boat ride for people to enjoy. Nowadays Robert gracefully ushers around lovebirds on tours through the rustic lagoons of the majestic New Orleans City Park. Along with the soft splash of oars on water, guests are treated to the soothing sounds of Italian music softly emanating from the gondola’s sound system. he gondola’s name is, Bella Mae in honor of Robert’s mother, Dio Benedici Bella Mae, and can comfortably fit up to six people. Each tour is privately booked and comes with complimentary cheese and crackers, as well as an ice bucket with ice and complimentary champagne or wine glasses. To date Nola Gondola has been the scene of 286 marriage proposals. Many local and out of town grooms have taken advantage of this tranquil and serene setting to pop the question to their unwitting brides. The overall air of romance in the gondola and the beautiful tree–lined lagoons of City Park almost assure that the bride–to–be will say, “Yes!”

Oscar Rajo did an impeccable job of capturing the scene of this shoot as our striking models, Rachel Lauland and Chris Waits floated by in their own blissful

world. Obviously, capturing a moving object is never easy for a photographer, but as usual, Oscar made it look easy, Just Face It Beauty provided hair and makeup for our shoot. Preparing models for the elements is never a walk in the park, but the girls at Just Face It Beauty are pros at styling hair and makeup to withstand the elements. Suzy Marks Video was on hand to video all of the romance on set. In the near future, the completed video will be viewable on NOLAWeddingGuide.com. Arbor House Floral did a tremendous job of adding flowery color to Bella Mae, who looked stunning as she transported our beautiful young couple around the park. A Battenburg lace parasol with roses and wildflowers completed the look. .

Fad Diets – Do They Really Work? Provided by: Danielle Fournet, RD, LDN EJGH Wellness Center’s Sports and Lifestyle Dietitian

ho hasn’t tried a fad diet before to lose weight for a wedding, vacation, or simply just because? Fad diets are becoming more and more popular as obesity trends continue to rise across the country. Such diets typically promise rapid weight loss from a combination of a strict diet, severe calorie restriction, and a vitamin/ mineral regimen. But, do they work? In the short run, yes but not so much in the long run.

Promises rapid weight loss – a healthy weight

loss goal is 1-2 pounds/week. Slow and steady weight loss is more likely to last whereas rapid weight loss frequently results in greater loss of muscle tissue versus fat tissue.

Eliminates entire food groups – many diets target carbohydrates. While eating excessive amounts of carbohydrates can lead to increased caloric intake and resulting weight gain, carbohydrates, specifically complex carbohydrates, are our body’s preferred fuel source. As with anything, moderation is key!

Promotes following a strict menu – “You cannot eat fruit after 5 pm.” “Drink this shake twice a day and limit calories to 400-500 per day.” Claims such as these are unrealistic and unhealthy yet followed by many due to proven results. Despite such, however, individuals typically regain the weight lost and then some after resuming their original habits.

Discourages exercise – everyone knows the

importance of exercise in maintaining health, yet some diets discourage clients from doing such. Why? It is likely because such diet does not provide enough calories and nutrients to sustain any type of moderate exercise.

Fad diets are as their name implies – fads, trendy, popular, temporary. They do promote rapid weight loss primarily due to a severe, unrealistic calorie restriction, yet this weight loss is often unsustainable. Before trying a new diet, consider the following “red flags,” and remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it likely is!

So, how do I lose weight and keep it off? Unfortunately, there is no “magic pill” as everyone desires. The old saying remains true – Exercise more and eat less! Enjoy your food, but watch those portion sizes. Invest in exercise gadgets, such as pedometers, heart rate monitors, etc. to keep you motivated to staying active. Make small changes each day to decrease your calories, such as switching from white bread to whole wheat bread or from 2% milk to skim milk. Whether you are trying to lose weight, maintain weight, or simply maintain your health, remember that it is a lifestyle approach and not a “quick fix.” Set a goal to make one change each week, including nutrition and exercise, and your health (and wallet) will thank you!

The thing that makes the Ball Gown Wedding Dress, a.k.a, the “Fairy-Tale wedding gown” a truly idyllic style is its flattering adherence to practically any body type. A fitted waist works best for this design, and petite body types may find these dresses a bit overpowering for their small frames. The Dress

The Sheath Gown is made to fit close to the body, with little accoutrement. Usually falling to just around the knees or lower thighs, this gown is especially great for summer weddings, but can also be great for the fall. Its basic columnlike design makes it easy to dress up or down and accessories like satin sashes can be easily added to cinch the waist and accentuate most figures.

The Mermaid is snugly fit through the bodice, down through the hips, all the way to the knees before flaring out at about the mid or lower calf. This curve-hugging gown is certain to show off all the right parts of the female form. Hourglass figures or women with athletic, boyish body types will love this dress, but petite women may find that it makes them appear shorter. If you are fit but buxom, this sexy gown is for you!

I will have a band, photographer, videographer and a photo booth. Please advise. ~ C. Pendergast, Shreveport, LA

A: The answer to your question really depends upon your venue. It would be wise to ask your venue contact if the vendors will have a separate room or if they will be allowed to eat from the buffet like your other guests. Some venues will charge an extra amount for your vendors to eat and drink - even if it’s a tray of sandwiches or non-

alcoholic beverages-and others won’t, so it’s always a good idea to find out ahead of time. Personally, I’m all for keeping your vendors happy by any means possible, since they are the ones who are working hard to make your wedding a memorable occasion. Skipping the thank-you notes and paying the extra money so that they can have a bite to eat is becoming a more fashionable and appropriate way to show gratitude. Q: Is it rude to call my guests that haven’t RSVP’d yet? ~ A. Eisler, New Orleans, LA A: There is nothing rude about wanting to be a bride who has all of her ducks in a row, including one who has the final guest count to give to her reception vendors. (That just makes you a smart and responsible bride-to-be!) In fact, you should call or email those stragglers who have yet to RSVP approximately a week before you need to give your final numbers to the venue. Keep in mind that there will always be a few invitees that change their minds at the last minute and show up, and although that situation is ultimately beyond your control, you can always add an extra 15-20 Mr. and Mrs. Smiths to your final guest list just in case in order to account for those folks. Q: I would like to change into a different dress at some point during my reception so that once the event is over, I can travel comfortably with my husband to the hotel and to any other places that we may wish to go post wedding. What would be the best time during the evening to do this, and is there a way to do it discreetly? ~ E. Stark, Metairie, LA

situation - especially if you are budgeted for a certain number of guests - try to be specific when addressing your invitations. Include each member of a particular household or party whom you wish to attend the event. For example, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Johnson should be written on the outer envelope and any children attending (under the age of 18) should be listed by their first names (in order of age, oldest to youngest) inside of or on the actual invitation card. Children 18 or older who are invited should receive their own separate invitations. If you do not wish to have children at your reception at all, you should find a way to tastefully say this on your invite, ex., “Adults Only Reception to Follow.” Photography by Louis

the formal events have been completed, so all that’s left for your guests to do is to enjoy themselves. However, assuming that you are finished with your hosting duties-you’ve said hello to as many guests as possible and finished your role in the aforementioned formal events: first dances, cake pull, cake cutting, etc…it is perfectly acceptable for you to change whenever you wish. Remember, you are the hostess, but you are also the guest of honor, and what you say goes. As far as subtlety is concerned, have your coordinator or maid of honor help you slip away quietly and undisturbed. Chances are they have a better idea of the evening’s timeframe and schedule of events - since that is included in their list of bridal duties- and besides, you have enough to worry about!

As far as your single guests who are asking to bring along that extra person - whom you may not even know at all – just find a tactful way to say that seating at your wedding is limited and that your budget or venue will simply not allow you to accommodate any more people. Above all, be firm but polite. This is your day, and you shouldn’t let a friend’s bad manners ruin it!

hen Erin Monteleone Kernion walks into a room, heads

turn and rightfully so. The 5â&#x20AC;&#x2122;9 beauty has legs that would turn some green with envy. Those legs come with a lot of work though, about 1,800 high kicks a day. Kernion is a Radio City Music Hall Rockette, and for three months out of the year she might perform in as many as six shows a day, not counting rehearsals and appearances in between. To date, she has been part of the world- famous dance troupe for seven years, first in Chicago and St Louis, and now in New York.

Since the age of three she has been dancing in and around her hometown of New Orleans, starting first with lessons at the Giaccobe Academy of Dance in Metairie and then going on to dance with various local troupes, including the Delta Festival Ballet and the Baton Rouge Cangelosi Dance Project. On a national level, she has danced for the Boston, as well as Pennsylvania Ballet companies in their summer programs, and has even spent one summer in a Rockette intensive program, where she claims to have garnered most of her mastery of the techniques employed

Recently we were honored to have Kernion (and her gorgeous gams) be a part of our bare bridal shoot. A bride herself, happily married for years now to another local dancer and wedding coordinator, Stephen Kernion, Erin was more than happy to oblige us when we asked her to don a wedding gown for a second time. With the help of some very talented vendors, we were able to express and enhance Erin’s already flawless, natural beauty. Makeup by Meggan and Amber Buxton Salon worked tirelessly all day to give Erin the different looks you see pictured (above) to complement each stunning gown from Rhinestone Runway and Bustles & Bows Bridal Boutique. The backdrop of the shoot, Jax Brewery Bistro Bar-which happens to overlook the picturesque Mississippi River as well as local hot spot, Decatur Street - provided us with charming, exposed brick and beams, as well as chic, contemporary white couches. NOLA WaxWorks: Custom-made Candles

mbiance is critical when choosing a venue for your wedding. However, sometimes your otherwise perfect venue lacks the atmosphere that you desire; that’s where NOLA WaxWorks can help! This locally-based company provides highquality soy candles in a variety of different sizes and scents, completely customized for you. They can also produce gifts for your wedding party or favors for all of your guests. We were privileged to speak with owners Kassie and Jack recently about NOLA WaxWorks. NWG: How long has NOLA WaxWorks been in business? NWW (Kassie): Well, if you’re talking about the formal “business” term, then a little over a year. That being said, I’m no stranger to candle making. It’s been something that I’ve done and loved for a long time, and I finally decided to turn one of the things that I’m passionate about into a reality. NWG: How long have you been in the wedding industry? NWW: We are pretty new to the wedding industry. In the past we were mainly a retail-based company

and had all of our products in local stores, but we kept getting calls and emails about customized candles for weddings, so we decided to expand. Now our custom candles for events are our biggest draw, causing us to pull back on some of our retail ventures to concentrate on customization. NWG: What types of services can you provide for a wedding? NWW: We provide a one-on-one consultation with the bride and the groom to better understand and meet their needs, as well as up to five different sized candles for weddings; we only work with 100% soy wax.

We have some in glass, some in tins; some have wax seals, and some have custom labels commemorating the names of the couple and marriage date. Some couples use them as centerpieces or for additional ambiance at the reception, and some will use them to line the aisle at the ceremony. Really the only limit is your imagination! Our candles also make great gifts to the bridal party and have a personal “thank you” note on the label to the recipient. As far as scents that we provide, we have access to literally hundreds of custom scents, ranging from baked French bread, to vanilla, to floral, to exotic scents like burning wood. NWG: What separates you from other vendors like yourself? NWW: I think what separates us is the one-on-one experience of creating something with our clients. They leave the custom design process with a feeling that the candles they’re designing for their wedding or event is an extension of their creativity. It really is a gratifying process to hold something in your hands that you “thought up.” It makes the wedding day experience that much more your own.

NWG: As far as weddings are concerned, do you have any advice for prospective brides? NWW: Well, as a bride to be myself, my advice is to not cut any corners. This is your shot to make this day something that you’re always going to cherish. Make the process fun. Get creative. It all doesn’t have to be a ball of stress. People pay money to go to places and drink wine and paint. Why can’t the process of creating your wedding day be just as creative and fun? When you call us, we try to exude this way of thinking. The beautiful Provence-style décor and massive four-poster bed in the suite lent themselves perfectly to the theme of this provocative, yet classy shoot. The timeless beauty of our models, Ayesha Khanna and Meggan Ory, was captured impeccably by Robert Faust Photography. The sexy and delicate decoupage from Bonjour Lingerie revealed just enough to leave us wanting more.

Photographers got around this by having the subjects, mostly women, posing in suggestive stances in front of various decorated backdrops. Boudoir photography was also popular in the 1940’s and 50’s “pin-up” photographs. Women like Betty Page, Betty Grable, and Jayne Mansfield posed in bathing suits, stockings, and other burlesque-style garments, setting the bar or what is now considered “sexy.”

Robert started offering boudoir shoots to his clients back in the early 90s and has recently revamped his signature style to offer his brides a way to express themselves and to feel more confident. In addition, the boudoir shoots make a great wedding gift to the bridegroom!

Robert’s approach is a little different than

t’s been a wonderful journey. You started with finding your soul mate, then planning the wedding of your dreams and now you are settling in to start your life anew. Well, you still have one more wedding related task before you - thank you notes. Most

people cringe at the thought of writing a personal note thanking each person who gave them a wedding gift. Keeping it simple and personal will make the task much less foreboding. Let your appreciation shine. Here are some tips to make the task a bit easier.

• You can either have personal thank you notes made (perhaps with your monogram) or you can buy pre-printed ones from your local stationery store.

• If someone was unable to attend your wedding, but still sent a gift, mention how sorry you were that they couldn’t be with you. Maybe offer to send them some pictures. Viewing your pictures online is standard for most photographers these days.

• Handwrite each note in blue or black ink only. They are much easier to read than other colors. • Mention each gift and how you will use the give, if possible. Try not to start with “I”. Use the word “you” more than “I” or “me” in the note. • Mention any special effort the giver may have put in for you such as traveling a long distance, giving a special toast, or throwing you a party or shower.

• Always send separate notes for your shower and wedding gifts, even if you received them both within a short time of each other. • Try to be timely. It is proper etiquette to send a note within 2-3 weeks of receiving a gift, or 6-8 weeks at the very longest.

We met in Spring 2011 at Louisiana Running, a local running club. I spotted him immediately the very first time I went and made a point to introduce myself after the run. My favorite part of planning was definitely dress shopping! I probably tried on 30 dresses and could have kept going. Brandon left most of the planning up to me, but since his main concern was music, I let him choose the band. I’m a heels girl for sure! I stayed in them all night!

hen it came to choosing the perfect bride and wedding gowns for this summer inspired shoot, we knew we had to match the theme perfectly. The bride had to be sun kissed and fresh faced, with hair that a warm summer breeze could blow through. It was paramount that the makeup and hair be a perfect marriage, so we called upon the very talented girls at Make Me Up and relayed our vision for the shoot. They did an amazing job on our beautiful bride, Gabrielle Gallardo and as you can see, the results were stunning.

In keeping with our vision, the wedding gowns were to conjure the feeling of being enveloped in natural surroundings, while also evoking the feeling of being a lady at high tea. We looked to the Bridal Boutique by MaeMe to help us find the perfect fit. Both gowns had a bit of lace and lots of sophistication. The slight pink hue of the first gown beautifully complemented the golden radiance of the venue, while the second gown gave off a very savoir-faire air. All of the aforementioned elements came together in this breath-taking shoot, which was captured beautifully by Robert Faust.

hankfully, there are many places to register for gifts, in-store and online. When preparing a registry, the bride and groom should decide where to register based on three things: 1. Their basic household needs 2. Timeless patterns and pieces 3. Trends that express who they are as a couple While online registries are where most guests will shop, keep in mind that there are many who may enjoy the tradition of going out and seeing the gift options first-hand. Make it convenient for all while allowing the benefits of online ordering. Having too many registries could lead to the couple not receiving an entire 8 serving sets of their dinnerware, so the bride and groom should not register at more than just a few places. Also, make sure that a few affordable items are chosen in order to provide a wide range of purchasing availability to guests who may not have much to spend. A few gifts in the $20.00 range should be added for this purpose. If there is one large item that the bride and groom would like to have, the maid of honor or best man could make arrangements with other friends and close family members to put in for large item.

Planning Second Line Parade

you want a traditional New Orleans wedding, you want to hire a brass band for a Second Line Parade. It is a way of expressing the unique local flavor of the city. The Second Line is the parade of people following the musicians, who are called the “First Line”. The sounds of the instruments (trumpet, tuba, trombone, sax, banjo and clarinet) are coupled with a snare and bass drum. A Grand Marshal will lead your wedding guests around a French Quarter block announcing and celebrating your event. These parades began back in the 19th century, with organizations advertising for burials and honoring the deceased all in one announcement. Many newlyweds can be seen with their umbrellas, white for the bride, black for the groom, and their guests holding handkerchiefs as they follow the band.

our wedding photographer is one of the most important investments for your wedding day. Over the years I have come to realize several factors that help me perform at my best. Communication is key. Talk with your photographer and discuss what photos are important to you. When creating your timeline, it is important to keep in mind how important these photographs are to you and your families. Let your parents know what you and your photographer have planned. Talk with your bridal party about the photos you want to do before the wedding, and why it is important for them to be on time and ready to go. A great time to do this is at the rehearsal party. Schedule more time than you think necessary for hair and make-up. I will say that again, schedule more time than you think necessary for hair and make-up. Staying on time is the most important thing you can do for stress free photos on your wedding day. You will be more relaxed if you have some extra time with your bridesmaids to have some champagne and enjoy the moment. Give yourself at least a half hour between the time you finish make up and the time that you put on your gown. All of your bridesmaids should be ready at this point, so that we can get them in the photos helping you with your dress and accessories. Corset back dresses and teeny tiny buttons are often time killers. Practice getting into the dress several times prior to your wedding day. Take time to walk around the hotel/venue and find some great photo locations before your photographer arrives. Roof tops, courtyards, hotel lobbies and French Quarter streets are all great locations for photos. A well executed plan makes it possible to achieve magical photos. Arrange to have transportation to the church for the guys. This keeps everyone together and available for photos. Have the groom and groomsmen arrive at the church a minimum of 45 minutes before the ceremony.

I know what you’re thinking: the groomsmen will not want 45 minutes of pictures before the ceremony. But, this will give them a few minutes to have their flowers pinned, make a restroom stop and talk with coordinators before photos. It is a good idea to have the groom’s parents and grandparents available at this time also. It’s best to be finished with these photos 15 minutes before the ceremony starts. This would allow the photographer to talk with the officiant and shoot a few detail photos of the church décor and guests arriving before the bride arrives in the limo. It’s perfectly fine to wait 5 or even 10 minutes for last minute guests to arrive, but anything more than that can lead to time problems. When the ceremony starts, don’t forget to savor the moments. Stroll down the aisle slowly, and make eye contact with your guests as well as your groom. Big smiles are contagious!

= Low Stress + Great Images Sure, the ceremony can be scary, but remember that you are marrying the one you love, so don’t let nerves get in the way. When it’s time for the first kiss, taking it slow creates “ooohs” and “aaaahs” from the congregation and gives the photographer time to catch more than one image. Got someone you’d like to include in the wedding? Ask that person to be the photographer’s liaison. This person knows what the wedding day photography priorities are and acts to keep everyone on schedule, whether that’s gently encouraging the bride to get into her gown, locating members of the bridal party who are running late or helping the photographer to identify family members who need to be included in group shots. Since weddings are such festive events, friends and family tend to wander and drift away from photography locations while waiting to have their picture taken. If you have plans to go back into the church for photos after the ceremony, advise the photographer, the limousine company, the police escorts, the florist, your reception venue, and the church. Advise all family members before the wedding who will be needed for those family photos. This lets them know where to be and when. If you don’t want

too many post ceremony photos, discuss this with your parents ahead of time. Although we want to get a few images with the bride & groom alone, we also want a few images with the bridal party, parents, and immediate families. We can always allow time during the reception to get those extra photos with extended family, friends, out of town guest, and co-workers. The photographer’s liaison will be helpful in pointing some of these people out. A little flexibility can go a long way to ultimately enjoy the best day of your life. You wedding day is meant to be a celebration and a fun day you can look back on forever. Trust your wedding photographer and keep an open mind that they are doing everything in your best interest to get creative and interesting images. Allow them to roam the reception venue and catch some candid photos and various party pics of your guests. Also give them the time to get some great fun shots of your guest on the dance floor. Your photographer should work with the venue coordinator for cake cutting, garter/bouquet toss, and any toast/speeches that are planned. 4. For box storage, line an acid-free cardboard box with the tissue paper and lay the hem of the dress in the box. Fold the dress like an accordion, putting tissue paper between each fold. Stuff the bodice of the dress with crumpled tissue. Put some layers of tissue on top and put on the lid (make sure the lid is solid and does not have a plastic window). Store the box in a cool, dry closet. Check the condition of the dress each year, and re-pack so the folds are in different places.

Professional gown preservation costs between $150 and $500, depending on the amount of soilage. It is recommended to bring your dress to a reputable dry cleaner who cleans about 100 dresses or more a year.

5. For hanger storage, wrap a wide hanger with cotton batting and cover it with muslin. Buy an acid-free cardboard “dress shaper” and place it over the hanger. Wrap it in tissue and place the dress over it. Stuff the bodice of the dress and any deep folds with the acid-free tissue paper. Cover the dress with a muslin garment bag and hang it in a cool, dry closet, taking care not to crush it with other clothing. Check the dress each year and wash the muslin cover.
