Letter from the Editor Hello and welcome to our Winter 2013 issue! Any longtime Nola Wedding Guide readers will notice some differences in the design and layout of our magazine. In our quest to continue to improve the quality and scope of the publication, we have hired a new art director, Traci Howerton. Traci brings a wealth of talent and a breath of fresh air to us at a time when we all need it. Need I remind everyone that putting out 4 magazines a year is a very ambitious and time-consuming project. Just to clarify, that is one brand new magazine with fresh content every three months. Articles to be pitched, researched and written, pictorials to be pitched, set up, coordinated, shot and edited, ads to be created and revised and so on. It is overwhelming at times and I am thankful to all who sign on for the ride. I want to welcome Traci and thank her for the incredible job that she has done on her first magazine. I also would like to thank Ole Oddlokken for his years of service to the Nola Wedding Guide and my family. He is a gentleman and a great talent. I consider him a true friend! Also, to everyone that goes above and beyond for our pictorials: coordinators, designers, photographers, florists, models, light techs, bakeries, venue owners, dress shops, etc., I say thank you. Handmade: The Local Etsy Presence

edding planning is in full steam and you and your fiancée are up to your necks in working on ways to make your special day uniquely New Orleans. Many of you ladies and gents have already explored the wonders of the online marketplace that is Etsy.

Many of the Etsy craftspeople are working and selling in the New Orleans area. So many of us since the storm have made a point of shopping local to support small businesses in the Greater New Orleans region. Etsy offers the local bride and groom (as well as lovers of the Crescent City who are marrying here) the opportunity to shop Orleanian-themed goods. The way to search for locally made and themed goods on Etsy is to go to www.etsy.com, then look for <More Ways to Shop> on the lower left sidebar, and click on Shop Local, then type in “New Orleans, Louisiana” in the “Where do you want to shop?”. If you were to just specify “weddings” as your search item in the “What are you looking for?” box, that simple search turns up over 2,800 listings. Whew! Where do you go from there? It is a good idea to narrow down your purview to a particular item or items. You can also decide to just investigate the offerings of a particular shop, and favorite the shops so you can get updates as they are published.

Custom designs of jewelry are available for bridal parties. TheBackPorchShoppe: Handpainted signs, backdrops and props aged to have a vintage, shabby chic look. Custom designs are available. Wandersketch: Hand painted mugs and china, both vintage and modern, featuring calligraphy and drawings. Custom designs are available to order.
Decorations for the ceremony also abound, with aisle runners and hand painted signs that can feature your names, wedding date, and taglines about your love for one another. Other items to consider purchasing a la carte or custom ordering are jewelry and hair and bouquet accessories for the bride, cufflinks for the groom and groomsmen, and the wedding rings for the couThoughts on goods that might be ideal to find on Etsy ple. As wedding favors grow in popularity, it becomes more challenging to find extraordinary ways to thank your guests for being celebratory witnesses to your special moment. Options range from custom mugs and coasters, to pralines and local sweets and are reasonably priced. Centerpieces, with a local twist, are also available for purchase and spare you the task of coming up with a way to craft a look for your reception that represents both of you, your families, and the exceptional beauty of the Big Easy. Marriage Licenses When you apply for your marriage license, at least one party must appear in person. He or she must have all the necessary information and documents outlined below. 1. State law requires a cerfitied copy of each party’s birth certificate, if born in Louisiana. Passports are not acceptable. If either party was born out-of-state, a waiver can be submitted. If either party was born out-of-country, a valid passport, naturalization papers, or green card, along with a valid state ID card or driver’s license must be presented at the office, and to a judge to obtain a waiver. 2. If either party is divorced, he/she must present a certified copy of the final divorce decree. 3. If either party is widowed, he/she must present a certified copy of a death certificate. 4. Each party must know his/her social security number, but no documentation is required. 5. Both bride and groom will need to complete a marriage license application; forms can be presented by either applicant in person.
Age Requirements If either applicant is under 18 years of age, but more than 16, the marriage is lawful and a license may be issued if the applicants provide: written consent of both parents (or custodian), or an order from a judge or juvenille court. In the event the applicant is under 16, all the above three things will be required.

Alterations 101: Tips for The Perfect Fit by Aria M. Mason
Y
ou’re on a quest for the dress of your dreams. You’ve found it and it takes your breath away…but it doesn’t quite fit. The salesperson assures you it WILL fit when you head down the aisle. How can you be sure it’s not just a sales pitch? Following the suggestions below can ensure that on your special day, everything looks –and fits- just as it should. Know your size. Bridal sizing differs from sizing for street clothes. Often, it’s two sizes above your regular size. If you’re interested in a particular designer, make sure to view their sizing guide so you can know what to ask for at the boutique. You want the size that comfortably fits the largest part of your body and is as near to your regular size as possible. A dress that is too big will almost certainly need rebuilding if you purchase the sample and you may not like the fit. Similarly, in regards to a dress that is too small, it is difficult (and costly) to let out a dress more than one or two sizes, especially if the fabric offers little seam allowance (such as silk, satin, or velvet) without the original seam line showing. Leave the clamps at Home Depot. Every wedding show brings out those big white clamps to give you the perfect silhouette in the gown. However, sometimes the image in the mirror isn’t what you’ll get once it’s altered. Instead, ask for someone in alterations to come pin the dress, if possible, so you can get a feel for what the actual modifications to the dress will look like.

Ask about the fine print. Some bridal salons advertise “free alterations”. Unfortunately, that often means the minimum- taking up hems, shortening straps, repairing loose beadwork, etc. That doesn’t necessarily include taking in or letting out a dress several sizes, altering the waistline, or adding additional beadwork or sleeves. If extensive alterations aren’t in their included offerings, you may be best served by having your work done by a tailor

or modiste. Be cautious in allowing your alterations to be done by a friend or family member: your wedding dress shouldn’t be someone’s learning curve. Make an appointment. If the boutique offers alterations appointments, I strongly suggest you make one. Find a slot that allows for a full hour; don’t try to squeeze a fitting into an already busy day or your lunch break. Ask the shop to recommend a good time to come in. Alert, kind seamstresses and brides are happy seamstresses and brides! Make an evening appointment on a weekday (avoid Saturdays for fittings if at all possible). You want their full concentration on your dress. Bring your foundation garments and shoes to ALL of your fittings. Yes, this is absolutely necessary. They should also fit correctly. Even if they don’t appear to drastically shape you, your foundation garments (including bridal slip and Spanx) WILL affect the way the dress hangs on your figure. You don’t want to end up with a different fit on your wedding day because of a different bra. Depending upon the cut of the dress, wearing the wrong bra can even affect whether the hem hangs evenly. If you’re not able to get shoes you want before your fitting, wear shoes at the same heel height as your intended purchase and have the hem marked for the next fitting, when you can bring the pair you’ll actually wear. Don’t trip. No, really. If you aren’t confident in your ability to glide everywhere with ease, get your hem taken up to about 1” from the floor. You’ll be at a heightened anxiety level on your big day, and you want to ensure you can remain effortlessly glamorous throughout. If you are wearing a long veil, I recommend trying it on with your dress to make sure the hem of the dress and the fall of the veil correspond. Get fitted later than sooner. Have your fittings –ideally, three- scheduled within two months of your big day. Fitting done too early means that whatever weight you gain or lose during your planning process won’t impact the fit of your dress too greatly. No one wants to be mainlining fried chicken (or the Master Cleanse!) during the most exciting time of their betrothal because they jumped the gun. Your last fitting should be two weeks before your wedding so any problems that arise have enough time to be corrected. Courteous brides get the best fits. It should go without saying, but arrive for your fitting clean, gum and beverage free, and polite. Your tailor will appreciate it. Try not to move around too much while they are pinning: it ensures the most accurate fit and keeps you from getting stuck. Listen with an open mind to their recommendations about your dress- they are professionals who are intimately fa-
miliar with garment construction, and may know of a better way to make the look match your vision. You can get a second opinion after the fact, but hear them out. Take your posse. Have your mom, maid of honor, or a close friend come with you to at least two fittings, especially the final fitting. They bring a valuable second pair of eyes to the gowns’ fit, and spot any problem areas you or the seamstress hasn’t spotted. They will also be able to find out how to best zip, lace, and bustle your gown from the experts, so it can be replicated correctly on your wedding day. If no one can accompany you, ask for the directions to be written down. Test the fit. You want to be able to dance, sit, hug, and walk on your big day. After the dress has been pinned to you and you’re given the all clear to leave the pedestal, take a minute to get down and move around so you can let the seamstress know if adjustments need to be made. Ask the caterers to set aside a take-home meal for the two of you. Chances are you will be starving at the end of the day. Plus you paid for it. :) Delegate some responsibility to others; you will need help, as planning is a huge task; if you can afford a wedding coordinator, they are worth their weight in gold. Go on a honeymoon; despite the economy, even a few nights at a local hotel will allow you to escape and enjoy your first days as husband and wife. When the doors open, before you proceed down the aisle, take a few seconds to look at your spouse and relish the moment. Take it all in and create a snapshot in your mind. Hold onto it forever! Wear a comfortable,yet stylish, button down shirt before you get your hair styled on your wedding day. It will come off easily and your photographer and videographer will be capturing all of the special moments leading up to you putting your dress on.
Let friends or family talk you into doing things that you don’t want to do. It is your day. Drink too much early in the day; it will be a long one and you want to remember every detail. Go over 5 minutes when making a toast Buy a smaller size dress and convince yourself that you will lose the weight to fit into it. Rarely happens. Write thank you notes to just the guests who gave you gifts. If the officiant or coordinator at the reception location does a great job, drop a quick line. Always hire the cheapest vendor you can find; chances are you will get what you pay for. Try to please everyone; there will always be someone that is unhappy with their dress, the date, etc...it is your day!

How/When did you meet? Jeremy and I are both huge Saints fans and met on September 25, 2011 at the Saints vs. Texans game. Jeremy’s brother, randomly came up to me, took me by the hand and told me, “I want you to meet my brother.” He introduced me to Jeremy and we started talking. A week later, Jeremy left for military duty for 6 weeks
and we continued talking throughout that entire time. Once he returned, we started dating and everything else is history. We instantly knew that we were meant for each other. He proposed 6 months later (April 25, 2012) and here we are... We really owe his brother!

Did your fiancé help in the planning process? Yes. He and I shared ideas about cake decor, favors, invitations, programs (he did an amazing job creating the template for our programs), honeymoon locations, secret service outfits for our ring bearers, music selection, and so much more. What was your favorite part of planning? My favorite part of planning was picking the perfect dress and of course, cake tasting. Can you describe your feelings during your vows? We wrote our own vows and both cried while reciting them. By the end of the ceremony, the audience was in tears too! What was your first dance song? We chose Luther Vandross and Mariah Carey’s “Endless Love”. At your reception, did you stay in heels or switch to flats? I’m super short without heels, so I stayed in them. Plus, Jeremy would have looked like a giant next to me if I wore flats.

Suzonne is originally from Alexandria, LA, but grew up in Destrehan, attending Destrehan High School. Jay is from Baton Rouge, LA but went to school in Dequincy, LA. Suzonne is currently a student at Our Lady of Holy Cross College working towards a Master’s Degree in clinical mental health counseling. Jay is an Elvis tribute artist that performs all eras of Elvis’s legendary music career and travels the world performing as The King.

We asked them about their upcoming wedding on November 8, 2014 and how the planning has gone so far. NWG: How did you meet? Suzonne: I am a huge Elvis Presley fan and have been since the age of 3. My father and I go to this Elvis Festival in Tupelo, MS every year. Jay was a competitor there in the contest. I knew of him, but did not know him personally. Two years ago, I was talking to one of the other Elvis tribute artists and Jay came up and ran his finger down the tattoo on the back on my arm, and asked, “What does that say?” I turned around quickly and said, “It means ‘my life’.”
Jay: From there, we talked for a while and exchanged numbers. At the time I lived in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee where I was performing at a theater and she lived in Destrehan, Louisiana. We talked everyday and fell in love with each other over the phone. NWG: Describe your first date. Suzonne: We talked on the phone for about a month, and then we decided that I was going to fly up to Pigeon Forge, so I did and the rest is history. Jay: Because I worked every night, we had to plan something during the day. So we went to Dollywood and rode the roller coasters and Ferris wheels and had a great first date. Suzonne: I do remember one special time I was up there. He sent me on a scavenger hunt and at the end of the hunt there was a ring there. My promise ring was there at the end. He is very good at surprises. NWG: Describe your courtship leading up to the engagement. Suzonne: We started dating in July of 2011. It has been very easy since the beginning. We would talk about marriage all the time and how our wedding would look. We already knew what type of ring I wanted and we would talk about how I would want to be asked. I knew it was coming I just had no idea when or how. Jay: We moved in together and have been enjoying each otherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s company. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s always been very easy dating her, we seem to get along just perfectly and we have the same wants and goals in life.
NWG: How did he propose? Jay: When I started thinking about the proposal, I remembered what she had said to me once: it needs to be something that she will never forget. So with that in mind, I started planning. It took me three months of planning to put it all together because it was so elaborate. First, I sent her a letter in the mail claiming to be a big producer for a new reality show. I told her we had chosen her to be on our next big reality show idea. The concept of the show was to have three teams of three women compete in a scavenger hunt around the city they live in, with clues to lead them to special locations that they had to visit. Once they arrived, they would have certain objectives they had to complete before they could move onto the next clue and location. The letter came complete with a money card to pay for everything for the day, so she believed that it was all real. The directions said to invite two of her closest friends to be her teammates and they had to video every bit of the day and at the end of the night they would turn in their videos to the producers. Suzonne: So long story short, we wound up going to Tiffin Inn and had to get people do the Macarena on tape while singing it. The next place it brought us was to Express at Lakeside mall. We had to pick out an outfit and then get dressed in male suit and ties, and get someone that worked there to video us dancing and singing to Justin Timberlake’s “Suit and Tie”. Then we went to Drago’s, and then to Venus Massage Spa and then to the Omni Royal New Orleans. All these places had objectives and clues we had to figure out and do before we could go to the next place. So we had a suite at the hotel and started getting ready. So the last clue said, go out into the courtyard. I walked out and saw candles and a board that had a message on it for me to figure out. It took me forever and I was so hot! Well I figured it out and it said “WILL YOU MARRY ME?” Then he started walking towards me and all of our family was there. So I have that whole day taped with my two friends and the love of my life asking me to marry him. NWG: How has the planning gone so far? Suzonne: Planning is going very well. I like to think I am ahead of the game. We have a lot of things already marked off the list. Sometimes it gets overwhelming and stressful but I know that our wedding day will be a fairytale and beautiful, so thinking about that makes me happy. I look at Nola Wedding Guide and Pinterest everyday it seems. NWG: Tell us about your vendors. Suzonne: Well we are getting married in Baton Rouge at a Plantation. It was the middle point for all of our family. I have always wanted a plantation wedding. I am using Make Up by Meggan for our pictures. Jay: We found our photographer, Mr. Stacy Marks. Who else would we use? He takes the best pictures I’ve ever seen. He seems to bring out the beauty in every photo he takes

NWG: Any advice for future couples? Suzonne: Communicate, respect each other, trust one another, laugh together not at each other, don’t go to bed angry or hurt, remember your vows, and love deeply. Jay: The best advice I can give to future couples is to make sure the relationship is real; don’t lie to yourself. You know if something doesn’t feel right and if your relationship is hard work then it probably isn’t real. It should come easy with no doubts, just complete unconditional love and trust. Because without those two things, you really don’t have anything at all.

Why is wedding photography so expensive?

I
worked for over a year with a seasoned wedding photographer to gain experience. I learned what to shoot and how to shoot it. Weddings are very fast paced events, with a critical timeline and stress on top of stress. Lighting is paramount and we must learn to adapt to a range of lighting situations instantly. A ceremony in a church is quite different than an outdoor ceremony, just as a reception in a hotel ballroom is much different than a reception in a French Quarter courtyard. There are no do-overs. We must also learn to anticipate where and when the next great image will come and capture that moment. Capturing great photos for people to cherish for a lifetime will always be its own reward, but don’t think it is easy money. There is a reason that most professional photographers do not shoot weddings! We have put years of training, effort and money into learning how to be the best photographer for your wedding. Once I had some experience, it was time to buy my own professional camera equipment. Two camera bodies, four or five lenses, four flash units, flash triggers, equipment cases, light stands and modifiers, and the never ending odds and ends, like batteries, and sync chords, not to mention back up equipment. A seasoned wedding photographer can easily have $25,000 to $30,000 or more, invested in their equipment to insure that you have high quality images. This equipment must be updated, maintained and kept in great working order at all times, which translates to additional funds for upkeep and repairs.
Advertising can get costly. The NOLA Wedding Guide’s bridal shows are a great start. A professional website is a must and has to be set up and maintained. Photographers have to finance various types of advertising and marketing campaigns such as bridal shows, print ads, on line wedding planning websites, tradeshow displays, business cards, and brochures. We also spend many hours maintaining a social media presence and networking with other wedding professionals. Now I’m ready. I have experience, pro camera gear, fast computer, business is set up, and marketing is done. Now the clients are rolling in. Consultations with couples to understand their vision for the day, help them develop a photographic timeline for the wedding, address any questions they might have regarding coverage, go over the contract with them, and explain services can take anywhere from 1 to 3 hours and is an important service. Assuming the consultation goes well and the client decides to book, then more time is spent corresponding about details.
So now I have some experience and some professional equipment. I’m ready to go, right? Not yet. Now it’s time to order my computer. Not just any computer. This computer must be capable of handling multiple large images at one time and drive powerful editing software. The monitor must be excellent for photo viewing and editing and should have great image quality, and color accuracy. Technology changes quickly and requires constant updating. I also have several external drives for easy portability like hurricane evacuations. Next on the list, business set up. Things like legal assistance, sales tax, property taxes, income taxes, payroll taxes, occupational license, liability and equipment insurances, business registration, legal forms, accounting services, banking services, office space, office equipment, portfolio displays, large print displays, sample wedding albums, all add up fast. At this point, I better find some clients.

Let’s do some shooting A bridal session may take 1.5 hours to shoot and an additional 1.5 hours back at the office editing the images. Then, I burn a disc for the client and another disc for back up and schedule an appointment to pick up the disc. An engagement session would involve the same work flow.
Once the bride views the images and chooses a print to display at the wedding, I retouch the image and have it printed and mounted so it will be ready for framing and schedule an appointment for print to be picked up. The big day is here In preparation for the wedding day I pick up my suit from the dry cleaners, grab my share everything cell phone, put some premium gas in my dependable car, and head for the hotel to pay for parking. Finally, the fun part is about to get started. 7 hours of continuous wedding day coverage and before you know it, it’s back to the office. Over the next couple days, I spend approximately 10 hours editing the images from the wedding day. I also spend a couple of hours creating an on-line gallery so that the newlyweds along with their families and friends can view and order prints directly from my website via password. Now it’s time to call the clients and schedule another appointment to pick up their disc with the high-resolution images and print release letter. We can now discuss moving forward with album options. After a few months of previewing the images, the client will contact us with a list of images they want to use to create the album design. This is when I wear my graphic design hat. I spend about 4 to 6 hours designing each wedding album personally. I do not use album templates. The client receives a proof of their album and has a chance to suggest changes to the design. Once the album design is agreed to, we discuss album cover options. This step can take quite a bit of correspondence back and forth via email. I will usually mock up a sample of the cover to give the client a visual.

And lastly, wedding photography is seasonal. Not many people plan weddings during hurricane season, Mardi Gras, the Jazz Festival, the French Quarter Festival, LSU and Saints home games. There is a lot of time, expense, and dedication that goes into professional wedding photography. Being a photographer is not a “get rich quick” job. Almost every photographer I have ever known, myself included, is in it simply for the love of what we do. The money just makes it possible.

Beauty 411: Hot Hair and Makeup Trends With the change in weather comes a change in trends. It is out with the bright Summer and in with the warm, rich Winter. When planning your wedding, matching the season in all aspects of your big day is a must. This year, the wedding world is seeing tons of trends not only in color and theme, but in hair and make up! So you have all of the latest trends, we asked our hair and make up experts some tips and tricks for the upcoming winter season! We spoke with the fabulous ladies of Amber Buxton Salon and Kiss & Makeup Beauty Services and asked them to give you the latest on fall hair trends. NWG: Are there any certain styles that are more popular for the winter? Amber Buxton Salon - “This winter, I’m predicting a lot of soft toussled texture and natural volume. The styles are moving away from the overly teased up “prom” hair and moving to more soft volume. The updo’s will be much softer with natural waves. Perfect curls are out. The braid trend is still in so you will see a lot of girls keeping their tresses at longer lengths.” Kiss and Make Up- “I would have to say that winter weddings in New Orleans gives you the okay to wear your hair down! Some of our brides think that the heat is too much for a down look for their wedding day. Winter we see more of the all down with big barrel curl look.” NWG: What about trends in hair color? AB- “Ombre is out and balayage is in. For blondes and redheads think honey, champagne, and cinnamon. Brunettes are turning away from the gold and warming it up with bright auburn accents or striking cool undertones. Just remember not to go so dark that it looks unnatural. It’s all about enhancing your natural color this season. Balayage, hand-painted highlights, help keep things soft and low maintenance.” K&M- “Winter is always darker hair. We find summer to be where you want to get extra highlights and have that beachy look, but winter we definitely see richer more chestnut colors.

NWG: How can brides make sure their hair is perfect for the wedding day? AB- “I try to remind my brides that although they are growing their hair out for their big day, it’s very important to keep their hair trimmed. I recommend every 6-8 weeks get a mini trim (around 1/4th-1/8th of an inch) depending on how healthy their hair is. The week of the big day, I love to do either a color gloss or a clear gloss to add vibrancy to the hair. Redken Shades Eq is amazing for camouflaging lifeless dull hair. Its also great for adding in different tones (gold, red) to the hair without being stuck with it permanently.” K&M- “Dirty hair is always best, believe it or not! A great tip for our brides, is if you have to wash your hair the day of your wedding just use shampoo. The oils in your conditioner really don’t help your style to last all night. NWG: Are their certain products you recommend for readers to use? AB- “There are a ton of products on the market that are sure not to break the bank. For fine hair, Redken Body Full Volume Amplifier - great for adding light texture - and the Redken Wool Shake - I LOVE THIS STUFF! For course/dry hair, S-Factor Flat Iron Spray. Not only do I use it for flat ironing, but I also spray it in the hair while doing some blow outs - careful not to get it near the roots since it is an oil based product. For curling hair (a must for the season), use a good thermal setting spray such as Redken Spray Starch. A product a little easier to work with is Rusk Thermal Flat Iron Spray.” K&M- “Dry Shampoo is our BEST FRIEND at Kiss and Makeup. That and a freeze spray works miracles on making your hair look super clean and lasting all night. Isn’t that what every bride wants? :)” After getting the latest in all things hair, we turned to Makeup by Meggan and Make Me Up Nola to guide you to the perfect fall makeup looks, plus products they love and tips to keep your face clean and beautiful. NWG: What are the latest makeup trends you are seeing?
Make Me Up Nola- “Trends right now are bold lips and false eyelashes.” Makeup by Meggan- “For eyes, it’s grey and black smoke! The look of “smoke” around the eyes gives a mysterious, romantic look to your makeup. For lips, rich cranberry and plum shades have definitely been seen up and down the runways this fall! NWG: Are there certain colors or shades to be on the lookout for fall? Make Me Up Nola- “Fall colors are all over the place, but mostly BOLD including deep plums, dark reds, bright pinks, and oranges. Makeup by Meggan- “Grey, brown, cranberry, plum, red and silver!” NWG: What new products are you in love with for fall? Make Me Up Nola- “We love Magnolia Makeup’s Lip Fix. What was your favorite part of planning? My favorite part of planning the wedding was knowing that it was all for a celebration of our life together. I enjoyed thinking about our friends and family being there to see Jason and I make a promise to love each other forever. Did your fiancé help in the planning process? Jason helped so much. He helped me make decisions on the food and cake. He even searched for the DJ and videographer. Can you describe your feelings during your vows? I cried as I started walking down the aisle. I thought I could hold it in but I didn’t. We did laugh during the vows. I could not get the ring to go on his finger and it made both of us giggle a little. What was your first dance song? Our first dance song was “When A Man Loves A Woman” by Michael Bolton. At your reception, did you stay in heels or switch to flats? For the ceremony and reception I wore white and silver wedge sneakers. They had spikes and crystals on them. They were comfy and they suited my style.

An unassuming façade belies a beautifully unique “Victorian meets Contemporary” décor and an entrancing ambiance. Republic New Orleans is known by many as a great place to catch a concert or to dance the night away to the hottest DJs in the country, but they are also rapidly becoming a top wedding venue. NOLA Wedding Guide was fortunate enough to do a fashion shoot at Republic New Orleans and speak with Jessica Talazac, Director of Special Events, about the venue, and the company’s philosophy on the wedding industry. NWG: How long has Republic New Orleans been in business?
NWG: How long has the venue been available to brides? Jessica: 8 years
Jessica: Republic New Orleans opened its doors right after Hurricane Katrina, in December 2005.
NWG: What types of services can you provide for a wedding?

Jessica: The Montgomery family built the warehouse space that Republic now occupies in 1852, and it was

used to store coffee close to the Mississippi River. The warehouse sat dormant for years until it was renovated for the 1984 Worlds Fair. Shortly thereafter, Oliver Stone took his turn with the space, developing it as a set for his critically acclaimed “JFK”. The venue then became a bastion for rock music, hosting bands such as the Foo Fighters, Better Than Ezra, and The Strokes. Today, the venue features exposed wooden beams, original brick walls, striking goldbeaded curtains and gorgeous crystal chandeliers, creating a stylish and tasteful atmosphere perfect for your New Orleans reception.

Mackie Says! You Can’t Go Wrong with Eating Clean
I
believe that nutrition is the biggest determining factor of overall health. It can protect us against chronic diseases, aid in maintaining a healthy weight, provide fuel for our bodies, provide us with energy and help us sleep, look and feel better.
• Shop the perimeter of the grocery store. This is where the fresh produce, lean meats, poultry, fish, whole grains and low-fat dairy products are usually located. Spend little time in the center isles of the grocery. This is generally where the majority of the processed foods can be found.
With so much nutrition information out there, it is hard to sort fact from fiction. One tip that you can’t go wrong with is to “Eat Clean”. This means eating whole foods that are closest to their natural state. Here are some good clean eating nutrition tips:
• Eat more fruits and vegetables. They are low in calories; yet full of fiber, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Consume a variety of brightly colored fruits and vegetables throughout the day.
• Start by eliminating processed and refined foods from your diet. These foods are basically striped of nutrition and are typically higher in fat and calories. Read labels, be informed and know what you are putting into your body. Labels with too many unfamiliar ingredients should be a sign to avoid that particular food.
• Replace unhealthy saturated and Trans fats with healthy fats. Unsaturated fats and Omega -3 fatty acids may help to lower cholesterol as well as one’s risk for heart disease. Some good heart-healthy fat choices are olive oil, canola oil, avocado, nuts and nut butters, seeds and fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, herring, albacore tuna and sardines. • Drink more water and green tea. Green tea is full of antioxidants and poly-phenols that may aid in weight loss, lower cholesterol and protect us against certain kinds of cancer, diabetes, heart disease and dementia. • Avoid added sugars. These types of sugars are added during processing, not naturally occurring sugars like those found in fruit and milk. Those foods with a lot of added sugar usually have a substantial amount of calories. I call these “empty calories” because they provide no real nutrition, only calories. Examples would be: regular soft drinks and candy. • Don’t fixate on calorie counting. Focus on eating the right foods and everything will fall into place. Jodie Muhleisen RD, CSSD

Q: I am the fourth daughter in my family to get engaged and my mother and father are so great to offer to help pay for my wedding. My sisters have been great as well, offering advice and support. However, it’s as if all of them feel that they are such “experts” on weddings, and they are being so overbearing to the point that I’m about to just elope! I’ve spoken to my fiancé about this and he thinks we should just go away, just the two of us, and get married. I don’t care if I have a big wedding, but I don’t want to break my family’s hearts either. What should I do? - M. Archer, New Orleans, LA
more relaxed attitude towards what can be used as a wedding dress. However, it is not alright for your mother to wear a wedding dress unless you specifically give her permission. You can tell her that you want her to be happy about her dress, but that you would rather her be in a different color and style. Honesty is always the best policy.
A: First of all, it is YOUR day and YOUR wedding. If you really feel good about eloping, then by all means, do it! It seems like you just need to sit your family down and tell them exactly how you feel. They love you very much and just want you to be happy, but if you don’t speak up, you will let yourself down and them as well. Maybe get them all together at a family dinner and thank them for being there for you, but let them know that you need them to allow you to make your own decisions towards your wedding. Maybe offer to borrow ideas from them and make them your own. They will most likely appreciate you letting them in on how you feel and you will have a happier planning experience. Q: My fiancé is insisting that he carry his cell phone on him the day of the wedding. I keep telling him that everyone who is important will already be at the wedding, so why would he need to make a call. Is there any etiquette rule against him having the cell phone in his inner coat pocket? - S. Grainger, Metairie, LA
Q: I am trying to figure out what time I should start my reception. I am having a traditional Catholic ceremony and the church is about a half hour away from the reception venue. I just don’t want my guests showing up too early or me to arrive too late. - R. Perkins, Montgomery, AL A: Traditional Catholic ceremonies last anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour. If you are going to take pictures after the ceremony, you should allow another 15-30 minutes for that in addition to the drive time to get to the venue. Your guests will arrive prior to you typically, so you want the venue open for them. It’s a safe bet to have your reception start about an hour and a half from the start of your ceremony. Q: I am a music teacher and a cantor for my church. I would love to sing for the parts of the mass for my wedding. Is that tacky or seem self-indulgent? - A. Florence, Berkshire, CA A: It is perfectly fine for you to sing for your own wedding. If there is a way for you to sing on the alter, that would be best. The entire day is about you and your husband to be, so a little self-indulgence is allowed. It is a beautiful way to celebrate your love.
Q: I am so upset! My mother has picked out her mother of the bride dress and it’s an off-white wedding dress! She’s so excited about it, but I’m mortified that my mother will look like a bride as well. She is saying that since it’s off-white that it’s perfectly acceptable. Is this true? - L. A: There is no special etiquette for the groom or bride with cell phones except the standard silence all ringers and sounds. The phone may interfere with a portable microphone from the priest or minister during the ceremony, and that could be an annoyance. Also, if your videographer puts a microphone on your fiancé to capture the vows, the phone could possibly interfere with that, and cause you to have undesired popping sounds on your finished video. It’s best to leave the phone with a family member until the reception, at least.

Choosing Your Church

ew Orleans is a very spiritual city, containing many different houses of worship. While there are a plethora of options in which to hold your wedding ceremony, it can be a daunting experience to try and pick the perfect space. There are a few things to keep in mind when choosing the perfect church for your ceremony: sentimentality, location, appearance, capacity, and budget. Sentimentality The best place to start is your current place of worship. In the Catholic and Jewish religion, it is traditional to hold your ceremony in your current parish or synagogue. If you do not regularly attend church, start at the church located in the parish in which you grew up. It may be a very comforting experience to choose a venue that has a special meaning for you. Being in a familiar place will lessen the wedding day jitters. Location Picking a venue that is readily accessible to you, your groom and your guests is key. Your church should be close or within a reasonable distance from your reception venue. Parking is another factor to consider when choosing a church. Your older guests will certainly appreciate it. Another consideration is the neighborhood that surrounds the church. The church may be beautiful, but if it’s in a bad part of town, you must consider the safety of your guests and their belongings. Appearance The church choice sets the tone for your wedding, so it’s important to match the look or ambiance of the venue, to the overall theme of your wedding. The size and length of the aisle, stained glass windows, and woodworkings, all attribute to the overall appearance of a venue. We are fortunate to have newer, modern themed churches in our city, but if you want that authentic New Orleans feel; you may want to do the Cathedral or one of the older churches in the city. Capacity Capacity may be the most important consideration for choosing your church. If you have a smaller number of guests, a huge church may look very empty.

Always account for your invited guests bringing a date and even though the amount of people you invite won’t necessarily attend, you must account for all of them when choosing the venue. Budget Most churches charge you to have your ceremony take place there. In the Catholic churches, it is usually a lesser fee if you are a member of the parish in which you wish to marry. Some churches can be upwards of $3000, so make sure that you have appropriated the proper funds for the venue. Also, a small stipend or tip may be expected for the priest to perform the service. Remember, too that the bigger the church, typically the bigger the rate and you also may have to add more floral arrangements, which also adds to your budget. Some churches don’t allow flowers, while others will provide them for you. Always ask when booking the church. Whichever church you choose, make sure that you are comfortable with the people who run it and the priest, rabbi, or minister that will perform the ceremony. You will want to be stress free when you are going through the ceremony. It is the biggest moment of the day and it should be as perfect as possible.

he rehearsal dinner owes its beginnings to ancient Roman times when wedding celebrations lasted three days-the day before the wedding, the wedding day, and the day after the wedding. Today, it is a mostly North American custom taking place the night before the wedding. It is typically planned and paid for by the groom’s parents. Since New Orleans is known universally for having some of the best cuisine, it can be a bit daunting to decide on a venue. Thank You Notes

t’s been a wonderful journey. You started with finding your soul mate, then planning the wedding of your dreams and now you are settling in to start your life anew. Well, you still have one more wedding related task before you - thank you notes. Most people cringe at the thought of writing a
personal note thanking each person who gave them a wedding gift. Keeping it simple and personal will make the task much less foreboding. Let your appreciation shine. Here are some tips to make the task a bit easier.
• You can either have personal thank you notes made (perhaps with your monogram) or you can buy pre-printed ones from your local stationery store.
• If someone was unable to attend your wedding, but still sent a gift, mention how sorry you were that they couldn’t be with you. Maybe offer to send them some pictures. Viewing your pictures online is standard for most photographers these days.
• Handwrite each note in blue or black ink only. They are much easier to read than other colors. • Mention each gift and how you will use the give, if possible. Try not to start with “I”. Use the word “you” more than “I” or “me” in the note. • Mention any special effort the giver may have put in for you such as traveling a long distance, giving a special toast, or throwing you a party or shower.

• Always send separate notes for your shower and wedding gifts, even if you received them both within a short time of each other. • Try to be timely. It is proper etiquette to send a note within 2-3 weeks of receiving a gift, or 6-8 weeks at the very longest.

Our subtropical climate keeps our weather pleasant year round and contributes to making our city an ideal backdrop for your special day. However, an outdoor ceremony can sometimes be tricky to plan. ou have been chosen to be the Maid of Honor at your friend’s wedding. I hope that you are excited, because it is a great privilege and one that not everyone gets to experience. You will be the bride’s friend, go - between, sounding board and confidant throughout the entire wedding planning process. You may even be the one person she will choose to release her frustration on at times. Bridezilla, anyone? Anyway, hold on tight because it should be a wild, fun and unforgettable experience. The bride chose you because she considers you her closest friend and because she believes in you. Try to take as much pressure off of her as possible. Perhaps you can arrange a small get-together with all of the bridesmaids so that everyone can socialize in a relaxed environment and discuss dress fittings, the bachelorette party, etc. Always remember that although you are in charge of coordinating the bridesmaids, you should always be diplomatic, kind and courteous. Keep the ship sailing smoothly and deal with any problems in a calm and rational way. Planning the Bridal Shower is one of the most fun and practical duties that you will have. This event is traditionally an opportunity for the bride & groom to be showered with gifts to establish their new home. It is also a time for both families, friends and bridal party to spend some relaxing time together prior to the wedding. Go above and beyond in your planning. Be creative! You alone can set the entire tone for the wedding day with your decisions. Consider... ‘Girls only’ or Couples shower • Decide the location • Choose a blank invitation package and create on your computer (inexpensive and classy) • Encourage the bride to register for gifts • Only invite wedding guests • Hold the shower at least two months prior to the wedding in the afternoon • Make sure to give party favors to all guests • Decorate in a creative and fun way • Choose some fun games to play (ideas online) • Choose the food (sandwiches, dips) • And make sure you get a great cake for the shower

Some ways that you may do this include: Be the first one to arrive and the last one to leave • Make sure she has something to eat or drink • Make sure that the bridesmaids are aware of all obligations • Assist the photographer and videographer with identifying family and bridal party members • Pay attention to the first dance • Make sure the bridal party is ready for their dance so as not to waste valuable reception time • Assist in the cake cutting if needed • Make sure the best man is ready for the garter toss • Assist in seeing the bride off to her honeymoon and make sure she hasn’t forgotten anything Here are some other ways you can help support your friend! Reassure her that you are there for her! • Help address invitations • Plan the bride’s shower • Help the bride dress and finish packing • Take the bride’s going away outfit to the reception • Bring emergency items • Hold the groom’s ring during the ceremony • Hold the bride’s bouquet during the ceremony • Help the bride with her gown, veil and train • Sign the marriage license • Offer a toast to the bride and groom at the reception • Help the bride change into her going away outfit • Take the bride’s wedding gown home after the reception • Mail the wedding announcements on the day of the wedding or the day after The act of giving to others is one of the greatest gifts we have to offer as human beings. Be the Maid of Honor that you would like to have. Be accountable. The bride has put her trust in you on the biggest day of her life. there is a spectrum of what couples consider to be their â&#x20AC;&#x153;favorite things.â&#x20AC;? Thankfully, there are many places to register for gifts, in-store and online. When preparing a registry, the bride and groom should decide where to register based on three things: 1. Their basic household needs 2. Timeless patterns and pieces 3. Trends that express who they are as a couple While online registries are where most guests will shop, keep in mind that there are many who may enjoy the tradition of going out and seeing the gift options first-hand. Make it convenient for all while allowing the benefits of online ordering.
Having too many registries could lead to the couple not receiving an entire 8 serving sets of their dinnerware, so the bride and groom should not register at more than just a few places. Also, make sure that a few affordable items are chosen in order to provide a wide range of purchasing availability to guests who may not have much to spend. A few gifts in the $20.00 range should be added for this purpose. If there is one large item that the bride and groom would like to have, the maid of honor or best man could make arrangements with other friends and close family members to put in for large item.

t is often said that the music and the food can make or break a wedding reception. Those are the two things that most guests will remember. Choosing the right band to fit your style and budget does not have to be a daunting task. Listening to different bands should not be a chore. In fact, it should be one of the more enjoyable things that you do in your planning process.
It is vastly different from performing at a nightclub or casino. Having a band so loud that your guests cannot even communicate is no one’s idea of a good time. That is a small example of what an inexperienced wedding band may bring you. Experience is vital. If you only have one chance to get it right, go with the experienced band every time. Longevity equals success. There is a good reason that some bands have been popular for so long. I strongly advise taking the time to see the bands that you are considering perform live. There is no substitute for live performance. In the event that you cannot see the band that you are considering, most will have a demo that they can send you. It will usually contain a sample of their music, song list, etc. Some very important questions to ask prospective bands:

• How long have you been together? • Will I get the same band at my reception? • How many weddings have you done in this band? • Do you have any references? • Have you performed at my venue in this band? • Is your song list up-to-date and accurate? Another bit of advice is to be wary of bands that pop up out of previous bands. Usually, they will say, “We use to be in ‘insert previous successful band here,’ but now we have started our own band.” Often, they are just copies of the original band with far less experience and business acumen. “Wow, the band was great and the food was delicious. What a great wedding.” Hearing that from your guests will make the search for the perfect wedding band worth the effort. It will be music to your ears for years to come.
As more and more bands attempt to flood the wedding market to take advantage of the money involved, it is more imperative than ever to do your homework and be wary. Performing at weddings is an art that takes time and experience to perfect.

Second Line Parade If you want a traditional New Orleans wedding, you want to hire a brass band for a Second Line Parade. It is a way of expressing the unique local flavor of the city. The Second Line is the parade of people following the musicians, who are called the “First Line”. The sounds of the instruments (trumpet, tuba, trombone, sax, banjo and clarinet) are coupled with a snare and bass drum. A Grand Marshal will lead your wedding guests around a French Quarter block announcing and celebrating your event. These parades began back in the 19th century, with organizations advertising for burials and honoring the deceased all in one announcement. Many newlyweds can be seen with their umbrellas, white for the bride, black for the groom, and their guests holding handkerchiefs as they follow the band. Vows And How to Write Them
M
ost of the planning of a wedding is spent on the colors, the theme, dress, tux, food and all of the other thousand little details. A very important part that tends to get pushed to the side is the couple’s wedding vows. The vows are the couple’s promise to love and honor each other for the rest of eternity. It is a beautiful and special moment shared by two people who love each other deeply. Today, it has become more popular to move from the traditional and create unique ceremonies that reflect the couple’s personality. Vows are becoming a larger part of those ceremonies and offer a creative and personal way of expressing love and promise to each other. Writing personal and heartfelt vows can be a daunting task to some. The couple will have to say these words not only to their partner, but also in front of their friends, family, and wedding guests. Here are some simple tips on how to craft the perfect wedding vows.

REFLECT Take time to yourself to really think about what you want to say. Your vows will be personal so this is the time to think about all of the funny stories and moments you’ve had with your partner. You could even go on a “vow date” as a couple and talk about all the memories you have together. It’s a great way to have time with your partner during the crazy planning process and get inspiration for your vows at the same time. LOVE & PROMISES Your vows are supposed to encompass the love you have for your partner and the promises you make to them for the future. Tell them what you love about them. Promise that you’ll love them forever even when they leave the cap off of the toothpaste or get too competitive at board games. GET INSPIRED Great works of literature, old poems, movie quotes, etc. These are all great outlets of inspiration for your own vows. You can even pull from traditional vows and incorporate a part of you or your spouses’ faith. Read them the lines of their favorite song or recite a love poem.
GET CLEARANCE Depending on your faith or religion, you will have to clear this with your wedding officiant. You want to make sure that writing your own vows is acceptable for the ceremony you have planned. Some cultures and faiths have specific, traditional vows that are already a part of the ceremony. Also, certain officiants, no matter how lenient, will want to review the vows before the day of the ceremony. AGREEMENT Personalized vows are something in which both partners have to agree. Once you decide if this is right for you, make the process easier by sitting down with your partner and going over the logistics. PRACTICE OUT LOUD This suggestion may seem ridiculous, but it always works! How you read and how it sounds out loud can be two very different things. When practicing out loud, you can fix any grammatical errors or the overall flow of your vows. It will have you cool and confident, even through tears, on the day of your wedding. REMEMBER! The vows are ultimately about you and your partner. This is not a time to worry about mom, dad, or grandma. It is about you as a couple and the love that you
share. It is okay if your vows are silly or a little funny. If you want to write a poem or sing them a song, go for it. Vows should sound like you; reflect you and your partner’s personalities, especially when you are making promises to each other. Writing your vows is not something that should have you worried. There is no right or wrong way to accomplish the perfect vows for YOU. Make it personal, share your love, and promise that you’ll stand by them forever. Add a little preparation and practice and you’ll be writing in no time!

I
t was love at first sight, the perfect fit for your perfect day - your wedding dress. Although you wore it only once, if you take as much care in preserving your wedding dress as you did in choosing it, then it can be enjoyed as a family heirloom for years to come-symbolizing love and family. Here are a few tips to keep your beloved garment as beautiful as the day you wore it. 1. You can either have your dress professionally preserved, or you can do it yourself. Either way, your dress should be cleaned within six weeks following your wedding day. Even the smallest stains cause the dress to yellow over time. 2.
Professional gown preservation costs between $150 and $500, depending on the amount of soilage. It is recommended to bring your dress to a reputable dry cleaner who cleans about 100 dresses or more a year.
3. If you choose to take things into your own hands, then you must first decide between box and hanger storage. It may be more practical to store the dress in a box, but hanger storage is the best way to prevent hard-to-remove creases. Either way, buy plenty of acid-free tissue paper. 4. For box storage, line an acid-free cardboard box with the tissue paper and lay the hem of the dress in the box. Fold the dress like an accordion, putting tissue paper between each fold. Stuff the bodice of the dress with crumpled tissue. Put some layers of tissue on top and put on the lid (make sure the lid is solid and does not have a plastic window). Store the box in a cool, dry closet. Check the condition of the dress each year, and re-pack so the folds are in different places. 5. For hanger storage, wrap a wide hanger with cotton batting and cover it with muslin. Buy an acid-free cardboard â&#x20AC;&#x153;dress shaperâ&#x20AC;? and place it over the hanger. Wrap it in tissue and place the dress over it. Stuff the bodice of the dress and any deep folds with the acid-free tissue paper. Cover the dress with a muslin garment bag and hang it in a cool, dry closet, taking care not to crush it with other clothing. Check the dress each year and wash the muslin cover.
