From the Editor

Hello. Welcome to the October Issue of our magazine. I know that you may have heard this before, but I can honestly say that this is the best issue that we have ever produced. Our stunning and inspirational pictorials and informative articles combine to make this a bride’s fantasy come true. All of the pertinent information that one could possibly need to plan a dream wedding is located within these pages. Our photographers and all of the affiliated vendors really brought their A games to this issue, as our current pictorials feature some of the most beautiful images that I have ever seen; they will simply take your breath away! A huge thank you to everyone involved in creating these shoots....Bravo! We are also debuting a new recurring feature this issue that will offer food suggestions and recipes from WGSO radio host, Mo McConnell. We are very excited to welcome Mo to our team and look forward to her contributions to the Nola Wedding Guide. As always, a huge thank you to my staff: Jessica Bayard, Kate Abreo Mendelson, Traci Howerton, Stephany Geiling-Cure and interns, Ana Seip and Hannah Gomez, who all went above and beyond to create this magazine. Love all of you! Don’t forget to view our blog style website at www.nolaweddingguide.com for pictures, articles, vendors, past issues and more. See you in January 2015.

L I C EMarriage N S ELicense to Wed

Stacy Marks

When you apply for your marriage license, at least one party must appear in person. He or she must have all the necessary information and documents outlined below.

IMPOrTANT INfOrMATION

AGE rEquIrEMENTS

1. State law requires a cerfitied copy of each party’s birth certificate, if born in Louisiana. Passports are not acceptable. If either party was born out-of-state, a waiver can be submitted. If either party was born out-of-country, a valid passport, naturalization papers, or green card, along with a valid state ID card or driver’s license must be presented at the office, and to a judge to obtain a waiver.

If either applicant is under 18 years of age, but more than 16, the marriage is lawful and a license may be issued if the applicants provide: written consent of both parents (or custodian), or an order from a judge or juvenille court. In the event the applicant is under 16, all the above three things will be required.

2. If either party is divorced,he/she must present a certified copy of the final divorce decree. 3. If either party is widowed, he/she must present a certified copy of a death certificate. 4. Each party must know his/her social security number, but no documentation is required. 5. Both bride and groom will need to complete a marriage license application; forms can be presented by either applicant in person.

GENErAL INfOrMATION A Louisiana license is valid in any parish in Louisiana for 30 days. There is a 72-hour waiting period between the time of issuance and the ceremony. Only a district judge or Justice of the Peace can waive this. Newlyweds should order a certified copy of their marriage license two weeks after the marriage to ensure that the license has been returned and recorded.

S “Andrew and I went to high school together, where we were both on the debate team and took a few other classes together, but never really talked until after college.”

“On our first date, Andrew and I met in downtown Oklahoma on the river walk. We ended up on either sides of the river, so we had to meet each other halfway on the bridge. When Andrew proposed, he took me back to the bridge where we had met on our first date.”

“We chose Saint Joseph Church because my parents were married there.”

“My thoughts right before going down the aisle were, ‘This is the easy part.’”

“Before the ceremony, Andrew and I met on either sides of a wall. He held out his hand, and even though I couldn’t see him and he couldn’t see me, I reached out and grabbed it and just started crying. I knew I was so blessed and lucky to have his hand to hold onto for the rest of my life. I will never forget how strong, yet loving, his grasp was.”

Planning

When it comes to weddings, sometimes you’ve got to wonder, where’s the male influence in all of the pink fluff? If you want to break the tradition of the bride does everything and have an equal part his and hers wedding, just follow this simple guide to help the two of you strike a compromise.

She said

Item

Invitations

Á la the movie, Bridesmaids The pink and white-striped box complete with candles, sweets, and of course, butterflies and classical music that overwhelm you when you open it.

He said An email to closest friends and maybe some family.

The compromise Sleek, simple, modern and relatively inexpensive is the new norm for invites. Gone are the days of wasting extra cash on over-thetop small details.

Cake Let the guests “eat cake” fit for Marie Antoinette herself, seven tiers of flowery, frilly joy.

Color Scheme

Flowers

Honeymoon

Pastels: Pink, peach, lavender. Just like Steel Magnolias: “Your colors are pink and pink!” - Sally Field

Long stemmed roses, everywhere!

Floral, floral, and floral

The Ritz in Paris, where I will shop ‘til I drop every day. Hello Dior!

Tastes good...Maybe has an LSU theme.

Black, slate, cognac.

What flowers?

Pewter could be cool, I guess, and we can drink out of horn cups. It could look just like Game of Thrones...

I’ve always wanted to go to Munich and drink my way through the city.

Pretty, yet rustic and without focus on perfection

Shades of blue and green with natural earthy colors are a good way to bring a gender-neutral touch to the big day.

Pick something not too heavy on the pinks, and let some greenery like stems and leaves stick out to accentuate more masculine colors.

Sleek and contemporary is a safe bet. The table can always be dressed up or down with flowers and candles, so no need to drive each other crazy on this one.

Any major city can be a great honeymoon spot, but nothing beats a calming beach retreat where you can be alone for the first time as husband and wife.

RECIPES Mo Brennan McConnell is a New Orleans writer/producer/actor with international credits. She is also a domestic engineer who runs a home with three children - four if you count her husband - all while acting as executive producer/host of the popular GIRLtalkradio show, “The Family Business” heard weekdays, 1-3pm on WGSO990am. For more information, visit www.thefamilybusinessradio.com, and check out Mo’s food/humor blog at www.thisaintjuliachild.com.

So, you’re tying the knot, jumping the broom, taking the plunge... With all THAT activity, you’re going to need a shower, preferably a shower with lots of champagne, cakes, and GIFTS, right? Well, let me tell you about a great shower idea - this one will outlast all the chafing dishes and matching napkin rings - and it only takes a minimal amount of effort.

“No New Orleans bride should be without a fast and easy recipe for Red Beans and Rice!”

When sending out your shower invitations, include a 3x5 index card in each envelope. Ask each guest to write a family recipe upon that card – and sign it. At the shower, the cards will be collected and placed into a recipe box that you can keep and use for the rest of your life. In fact, as time goes by, the recipe cards will become priceless heirloom recipes for your children and future generations to share.

their recipes – stories behind the dishes. Even photographs can be included. And think what fun it will be to choose the perfect treasure box into which the cards will be placed. A beautiful wooden box would fill the bill or even something gilded - if that is your style – and everything in between.

Want to make it even more special? Guests can include a bit of family history to go with 36

Food

“QUICK” RED BEANS a la crockpot

1 pound of dry red beans 1.5 pounds of smoked sausage 1 cup of trinity several bay leaves your favorite dry seasoning Pour dry beans into your crock. Rinse the beans (twice) and pull out any weird bits. Now, slice the smoked sausage, and add to the crock. (You can also use any other type of seasoning meat or none at all.) Add the trinity, bay leaves and your favorite dry seasoning. Now, cover the whole mess with BOILING water (or stock if you really want to layer some flavors!). Adding the liquid already boiling confuses the beans and makes them think they’ve been cooking two hours already. Cool, huh? (Speeds up the whole process.) And you’ll still have plenty of time to undo the weekend ‘kiddie bomb.’ Set the crock pot to ‘high,’ and the beans will be ready in around 5 hours. Set it to ‘low,’ and add another 3 hours to that. It all just depends on how much of a hurry you’re in. (or how dirty your house is!)

Check your beans about half way through to give them a stir, and add a little more liquid if needed. About 25 minutes before you’re ready to eat, put some rice to steam and toss a salad. Add some french bread and butter and a pitcher of mint sweet tea. Gourmet? “Gourmaybe”.... But that’s a stretch when you’re eating them on the patio under a umbrella. Now you know there will be leftover beans. Here’s what I like to do the next day: Throw the leftovers in a pot. Add half the amount of bean volume in cream. Stir over low heat. Next, get out your wand immersion blender, and whip up the whole pot into a smooth, cream of bean soup. I have a picky teenager, so at our house we call this “Chili Soup.” Add some ground cumin to taste, and top the bowl with sour cream and cheese. She’s none the wiser that she’s really eating red beans. (“Ewwww, mom!”) w w w . n o la w e ddi n g g u i de . c o m

Featured Couple

We love to feature real couples in the NOLA Wedding Guide. Their love stories and wedding planning experience serve as inspiration to our readers. We tell these beautifully unique stories through our Featured Couple Facebook Contest. After starting the contest 2 years ago, it has grown into a much anticipated and highly coveted staple of each issue. The winning couple is chosen by the number of Facebook likes that their photo receives, with this issue’s two finalist couples each garnering over 600 votes! Amanda Sullivan and John Owen, won by just a few votes. We had the chance to find out more about this beautiful couple and what their plans were for their upcoming wedding, taking place on April 11, 2015. NWG: How did you meet? Amanda: As funny as this may sound, John and I met at Taco Bell- yes, Taco Bell! It was the week after Hurricane Katrina hit, and we were both juniors in high school. My friend Brittany

invited me to go eat lunch with her and some other friends. I could not help but notice a guy at the table next to me sitting alone. He was really cute with light blue eyes and was wearing an Auburn t-shirt. Little did I know that he was a friend of Brittany’s friend Alex. The four of us chatted and laughed and when Brittany and I were on our way home, all I could talk about was how cute John was. Little did I know he was talking to Alex about me also! John: I almost stayed in bed that day, but at the last minute decided to just get up and go. I had no idea that Amanda was going to be there. I remember thinking Amanda was really pretty. I think my exact words to Alex were, “She is hot!” NWG: Describe your first date. Amanda: Our first real date was at Copeland’s Sweet Fire and Ice. It was very sweet, and I remember really liking him. Looking back, it was quite fancy for a high- school date!

John: We were still in high school, so I had to charm my mother because this was going to be on her dime, and I needed the car. But hey, it was worth it! It was awkward at first because I had never actually been on this kind of date before, but everything went pretty smoothly, and we had a good time.

John: After college, Amanda and I decided to buy a house and start our “grown up” lives together. We have learned so much about each other over the past nine years, and it is safe to say no one knows me better than she does.

NWG: Describe your courtship.

Amanda: On March 29, 2014, we had dinner plans with good friends of ours, Alex and Sommer, and their baby girl, Camille. We were all meeting at our favorite hibachi place. Shortly after leaving, my mom called to tell me that she, my brothers, my Aunt Jen, and my Maw Maw were all on their way as well- I thought nothing of it because we all love hibachi! Camille was getting hungry, so Sommer prepared her bottle and put her bib on. Alex jokingly said, “Let’s let Uncle John feed her.” He handed Camille to John, and John turned her to me. I was about to take her, until I saw her bib. It was embroidered

Amanda: By the time John and I are married, it will have been nearly ten years that we have been together. We started dating when we were juniors in high school and continued dating through out our college years at Southeastern Louisiana University. My family adores John and already considers him part of our family. I feel blessed to have found real love so early in life, and I can’t wait to continue our journey as not only high school sweethearts, but also officially as Mr. and Mrs. John Owen Jr.! 72

in metallic silver thread with a ribbon hanging from it. Quickly, I read the bib, which said, “Will You Marry Me?” Right above was a little pink ribbon with something big and shiny hanging from it. All I could do was throw my hand over my mouth and gasp. I looked around at my family, then back at John. He handed Camille to Alex, took the ring from the bib, and said, “Will You Marry Me?” My heart was racing, my hands were shaking, and I was fighting back tears of joy.

Featured Couple

John: Before the dinner I brought the ring to Alex’s house, and Amanda’s mom embroidered a baby bib that said, “Will You Marry Me?” We tied the ring on the bib from a ribbon. I’m not the best with babies, so Amanda said, “Here, just give her to me.” As I turned Camille around, Amanda paused for a minute and was trying to read what was embroidered on her bib. After reading it, she just looked around and was stunned. She never actually said “yes” until Alex said, “Well?!” But then she finally said, “YES!” NWG: How has the planning gone so far? Amanda: So far, planning is going well. I am the researcher, and John is the decision maker. Together, we have made a good team through the whole process. I feel like we have gotten a good bit done in a short period of time, which was my goal.

who made my “say yes to the dress” experience one I will NEVER forget!

John: Amanda pretty much already knew what she wanted and where she wanted it to be, which made it a little easier to begin planning. She works hard on finding the best vendors while still staying within our budget, and she has stayed up countless nights researching and comparing different things for the wedding. Because of her, I know we will have a wedding everyone will remember.

Amanda: My advice for future couples is to never let the planning and preparation of your wedding distract you from the reason for it all: your love and commitment for one another. Remember to always be honest, and show unconditional love even through the hardest times. Even when you have been together for years, don’t get so comfortable as to forget the little things; the little things mean the most.

NWG: Tell us about some of your wedding vendors.

John: One thing I have learned is that the big day will come before you know it. You may think you have a lot of time, but you don’t. The sooner you have planned and the more that you’ve done, the better.

Amanda: My wedding dress and accessories are from the fabulous Bridal Boutique by MaeMe

NWG: Any advice for future couples?

n New Orleans, outdoor ceremonies are as common as roast beef poboys. Our subtropical climate keeps our weather pleasant year round and contributes to making our city an ideal backdrop for your special day. However, an outdoor ceremony can sometimes be tricky to plan. To Maintain NOT Gain: How to Enjoy the Holidays and Still Fit into Your Wedding Dress! Provided by: Jessica Frederickson MS RD, LDN EJGH Wellness Center’s Sports and Lifestyle Dietitian

Health

I

t’s that joyous holiday time of year again, a time for celebration, food, family, friends and plenty of shopping to do. We all tend to eat a bit too much, sleep too little and stray away from our normal routines. With all the fun and festivities sometimes weight gain can seem inevitable, and for a bride this

can be especially worrisome if she is trying to fit into her special wedding dress on her big day. So what is a bride to do to still enjoy the holidays, but maintain her weight so that her dress fits her beautifully? Here are eight quick tips to help maintain and not gain during the holiday season.

1

5

2

6

Eat Before you Party Have a small 100-

200 calorie snack such as an apple with 1 tbsp peanut butter, half a turkey sandwich, or some yogurt and fruit to take an edge off your hunger. This makes you less ravenous and less likely to eat the first thing in sight once you get to the party.

Eat Throughout the Day Banking your calories so that you may indulge in a large meal ends up backfiring most of the time! You usually end up over eating and consuming more calories than if you had eaten throughout the day. Eating several meals also keeps your metabolism humming and keeps your body burning calories all day long.

3

Indulge a Little Bit!

The holidays only come around once a year and with that there are many special recipes. Pick one or two of your favorite must have foods and savor those. This way you can indulge your cravings and avoid overeating later on. One or two guilty pleasures won’t break your calorie bank…it’s ok to live a little!

4

Continue

to

exercise

regularly

Add wedding planning to the already hectic holiday season and you could be setting yourself up for plenty of stress eating. Try to hit the gym, the pavement, or an exercise class at least 5 days a week. Make it fun too by working out with friends or make it a family event and get everyone outdoors and moving. You’ll be spending some quality time together, burning calories, and relieving stress all at the same time!

Limit Alcohol Intake

It’s ok to have a cocktail here and there, but going overboard with the fun festive drinks not only adds up calorie wise, but it also decreases inhibitions and will power. So stick with maybe one to two drinks for the evening so you won’t be tempted to eat extra food.

Socialize While Partying You will have plenty to talk about with your wedding coming up. Command the center of attention or find someone to have a great conversation with to distract yourself from the buffet table. Not only will you have more fun, but you won’t have to worry about overeating.

7

Learn to Say No!

You may have that pushy relative or friend that wants you to try everything at the party, but you have the right to say no! Inform them of your wedding plans and goals, so that you can control everything that goes into your mouth! The same goes for all the social engagements. With so many during the holidays it can seem impossible to do it all. Keep stress levels in check and go to the events you truly cannot miss. This will help you to avoid all the stress eating that unravel weight maintenance goals!

8

Get Plenty of Sleep You may not think the

amount of sleep you get ties into nutrition, but it definitely does! Making sure you go to bed at a reasonable hour each night helps to keep appetite in check, cravings down, and stress levels low. You will be able to think clearer and make better decisions throughout the day.

Blue strapless gown with lace bodice and tulle skirt with lace embroidery, rhinestone and satin belt used as choker, rhinestone drop earrings Bustles & Bows Bridal Boutique

Fashion Sits at the Ritz The well-to-do and Park Avenue have nothing on the Ritz Carlton, New Orleans. Steeped in opulence and luxury, the hotel recalls a bygone era when grandeur was ubiquitous. Housed in the former Maison Blanche building built in 1908 - this world famous hotel royally sits on the edge of the French Quarter and offers a perfect setting for our winter styled shoot. We intended to pay homage to the Antebellum lavishness of the hotel’s Penthouse Suite while bringing a modern flair to the Ritz’s 14th floor Mercier Terrace. With the help of our talented vendors and models, we were able to, “Put on the Ritz,” and capture the splendor of the moment. Dress to Impress

The Dress

The thing that makes the Ball Gown Wedding Dress, a.k.a, the “Fairy-Tale wedding gown” a truly idyllic style is its flattering adherence to practically any body type. Usually matched with fitted bodices, these dresses flare out from the hips, providing just the right amount of sensational and over-the-top glamour. A fitted waist works best for this design, and petite body types may find these dresses a bit overpowering for their small frames. However, if high drama and spellbinding impact are what you’re striving for on the big day, you can’t go wrong with this dress! 106

nola weddin g guide

www. no l a we d d i n g g u i de . c o m

The Modified A-Line features a skirt that slips lightly past the hips and gradually flares to the hem, forming an “A shape. Slightly less forgiving than the A-Line Wedding dress-which flatters most body types-the modified A-line fits more snugly against the body. Petite women love this dress because of its elongating qualities and ultimate figure flattery!

The Trumpet Gown, like the Mermaid, hugs the body and really emphasizes the shape. However, the Trumpet dress is easier to walk in as it is slightly fuller and flares higher on the leg. If you’re not the most graceful of brides but still want the sleek, sexy look that the mermaid gown provides, the trumpet gown is your best option.

Planning

The Dress

The Sheath Gown is made to fit close to the body, with little accoutrement. Usually falling to just around the knees or lower thighs, this gown is especially great for summer weddings, but can also be great for the fall. Its basic column-like design makes it easy to dress up or down and accessories like satin sashes can be easily added to cinch the waist and accentuate most figures.

The Mermaid is snugly fit through the bodice, down through the hips, all the way to the knees before flaring out at about the mid or lower calf. This curve-hugging gown is certain to show off all the right parts of the female form. Hourglass figures or women with athletic, boyish body types will love this dress, but petite women may find that it makes them appear shorter. If you are fit but buxom, this sexy gown is for you! 108

R “We met while attending Southern University A&M College in Baton Rouge. Miner approached me at a fraternity party and we spent the majority of the evening talking.”

“I was a bridesmaid in my Godbrother’s wedding. When it was time for the bouquet toss I was the lucky girl to catch it! Little did I know the saying, “the girl who catches the bouquet is the next to be married,” would come true instantly. He got down on one knee and I said yes!”

“The wedding process was not as stressful as I thought it would be. Miner was very helpful with locking in vendors.”

“While walking down the isle, all I could hear was my soloist singing Alicia Keys’ “Never Felt this Way”. I was so overcome with emotions...”

“My most memorable part of the evening was when my dad and I did our father daughter dance! It was so much fun! It was a mixture of fun songs!”

Stress Free Planning:

BRIDAL COUNSELING With all of the planning that goes into a wedding, sometimes a bride can become overwhelmed. Adrienne Brink, LPC opened a bridal counseling practice in Slidell a little over a year ago and has been working with local brides and engaged couples who feel anxiety concerning the planning process. We had a chance to chat with Adrienne about her practice: Stacy Marks

NWG: Can you give us a brief background? I was born and raised in Slidell, the sixth of my parents eight children. I’ve lived in Slidell most my life-aside from the six years I spent at LSU-and then 2 years working in Lafayette. I got married five years ago and have a one-yearold daughter. Now, I’m happy to be back in my hometown and close to New Orleans. NWG: What are your professional qualifications? I graduated from LSU with my undergraduate degree in Business and my Master’s degree in Counseling. I am a licensed professional counselor, or LPC, for short. I am also a nationally certified counselor (NCC) and a certified premarital counseling facilitator. I founded Bridal Counseling about a year and a half ago, which is a psychotherapy practice 144

nola weddin g guide

www. no l a we d d i n g g u i de . c o m

based in Slidell, LA that specializes in treating couples and individuals who are engaged to be marriage. NWG: Why did you choose to be a bridal counselor? What inspired you to want to help brides in particular? I was inspired to counsel brides when I started to repeatedly notice women having problems with their weddings. It surprised me to see women who were powerhouses at work and rock-stars in their social lives, overcome with anxiety regarding their weddings. But, as I thought about it, the problem became clear. Think about the fact that we take 40 hours of training to drive a car, yet we never get any formal advice on beginning a marriage; the latter can be equally dangerous!

NWG: What does a typical session entail? A typical first session starts with me asking for some background on the bride-to-be, her relationship with her fiancÊ, and about the concerns she wants to address in counseling. We explore any problems she is having, and I work to understand her world as she sees it. It’s my job to make sure she feels understood, affirmed and validated during the session. I want to intellectually and emotionally understand where she is and what is going on for her.

NWG: Any other things that you want our readers to know about you or bridal counseling? I want readers to know that this struggle is real and normal, and I hope they will consider making this investment in themselves. I absolutely believe that a few hours in counseling can bring about big, positive changes. If you are intrigued, check out a seminar, or call me at 985.285.9166. I also have a website where you can schedule your first appointment online. www.bridalcounseling.com .

NWG: How does your group seminar work? What can our readers learn from it? I like to call the Bridal Seminars a crash course in managing the emotional and people stress of the wedding. Because I know brides are busy, I keep it short but concise. I review the most common concerns brides bring to me and give practical solutions. It is not as personalized or extensive as individual therapy, but it’s very helpful to the women who attend.

V “Larry and I met in high school, and we began dating during my senior year.”

“Larry surprised me with a proposal in front of the St. Louis Cathedral in Jackson Square while I was out there with family. I didn’t even know he was there until I turned around and saw him down on one knee with a beautiful ring!”

“The planning process went very smoothly thanks to the help of my mom! It was easier than I thought it would be to pick out things that both Larry and I agreed on while staying within our budget.”

“I was very relaxed all day until it was my turn for hair and makeup, and then the nerves set in! After I was fully ready, my nerves turned to excitement, because I was ready to go marry the love of my life.”

“My most memorable moment of our wedding day would have to be walking with my dad and seeing Larry at the end of the aisle. I had so many feelings in that moment, but above all, I felt loved.” w w w . n o la w e ddi n g g u i de . c o m

Invite the boss?

Groomsmen issue

Q Do I have to invite my boss to my

Q I am not fond of my husband’s

wedding?

A This is one I get often. This all depends on what type of relationship you have with your boss. Some of us are fairly close with our employers, so inviting him or her to the wedding would be the same as inviting any other close friend. However, there are those of us who feel it best to maintain a professional relationship with our employers. I find it necessary, though, to state that inviting your boss to your wedding would not necessarily be a violation of those social boundaries. After all, we invite clergymen, teachers, coworkers, and other people in positions of authority who are not necessarily privy to the intimate details of our private lives. It’s all about what you and your groom want, really, and of course, if you can’t stand your boss, there’s no sense in making yourself miserable at your own wedding. 152

groomsmen. How do I tell him without hurting his feelings?

A

I am not sure what you are asking here. If you are insinuating that you would like to insist that he pick new groomsmen, I would suggest that you don’t have that authority. Whom he chooses to have share in the biggest day of his life is his strictly his choice. Think about it. Would you let him dictate to you who your bridesmaids were going to be ? I do think, however, that it’s okay to let him know how you feel. After all, good marriages are founded on honesty and open communication. Try to keep an open mind. Even though you may not like one of his buds, the guy may have done something extraordinary for your hubby to be or might have been there for him in a time of need. And who knows? Maybe one day you’ll grow to like or even love the gentlemen in question, so you certainly don’t want to burn any bridges now.

Uncooperative bridesmaid Q All of my bridesmaids are totally on board for my DIY (do it yourself) all-night wedding

planning sessions-which by the way I have only two scheduled thus far-except for one. She doesn’t seem to want to help with any of it: making favors, shopping for crafts, trips to the florist, anything!!! Is there something I can do to get her to care or to become involved. I just feel like she is being so selfish. Please help!

A It seems a bit strange to me that someone whom you have selected to be by your side for a day as important as your wedding would be completely apathetic when it comes to her bridesmaid’s duties. I will play devil’s advocate for just a moment, though, to say that you shouldn’t be too demanding of her-or of any of your other bridesmaids’- time, especially if she has a job where she works long hours, has small children at home, or has her own major life events that she may be dealing with while you are in your planning stages. Having said that, it doesn’t seem as though you are asking for too much, especially if you are perhaps giving her the option to come to one of those events and not both. Have a one-on-one conversation with her and ask her point blank whether or not she can handle being your bridesmaid right now. Don’t pressure her, but let her know that if she doesn’t have time to be part of the festivities that you would be willing to relieve her of her duties by letting her opt out. If she agrees or still seems disinterested, then you tell her there’s no hard feelings and simply say that you will be asking someone else. Song requests at reception Q

My future husband and I have worked diligently to come up with the perfect song list to be played by our band at the wedding reception. I’m just worried that some drunk or other unknowing relative will unintentionally sabotage our efforts by requesting something inappropriate. Is there some way to avoid this?

A Well, for starters, I would contact the band’s booking manager - this is the person who has been handling your music selections all along and just let him or her know that you and the groom would like to be the only ones allowed to make requests at the reception. That should take care of any unwanted demanders. You might take it one step further and have the band make a polite announcement prior to opening up the dance floor that the bride and groom wish to not have their guests make song requests throughout the night. Subtle? No, but it gets the point across.

Our Godson’s baptism was approaching and my cousin gave me a gift from him that was a poem in a frame that read: “Nanny, I love that when you look at me, you’re smiling happily. You will always be my rock that is here for me. But I have a man who’s smart and wise that always loves to stare in your eyes. C “You know that saying, “the right man will show up at your doorstep?” Well, needless to say, he literally did. We lived right down the street from each other. He was driving down the street and stopped to introduce himself, and for weeks after that he would walk his dog down the street, and we would talk for hours.”

“He proposed on our family vacation to the beach with our two children standing right next to us. He proposed with his grandma’s wedding ring.”

“The planning was easy as can be. My husband was such a big help!”

“When I was walking down the isle with my son, all I could think of was how lucky I was. I stared at my husband the entire way down the aisle.”

Hot Winter Wedding

design trends by Chet Pourciau

Winter weddings seem to have an enchanting aura about them. Maybe it’s the joyous time of the year, the crisp cool air or the warm fuzzy feeling of family and togetherness, but a winter wedding always invokes a magical feeling. As the seasons change, so do wedding trends. This winter it’s all about getting back to the basics and bringing nature into your wedding theme. The overall style and feel for winter wedding fashion and décor is one that incorporates seasonal basics with simple, yet elegant neutral tones while adding a hint of sparkle and glam. Here are my top picks for Winter 2014 Wedding Trends:

Color Scheme

Cake

Subtle colors mixed with natural greenery on a neutral white or ivory background is trending this winter. Greenery is “the neutral that goes with everything!” Keep things simple, and use subtle tones such as soft pink, powder blue or sea green for a hint of color.

Think white with a splash of bling Less is more in cake appearance. A grand, white cake with clean lines and simple shapes is hot right now. Add some bling with a metallic accent ribbon or beads for a dramatic contract to the simplicity of the cake. Elaborate cake stands are trending as a way to make a statement with the wedding cake without overdoing the cake itself.

If you want to go bold – mix in some rich jewel tones to give your décor an extra flare. You can easily add hues of deep red or metallic gold to incorporate eye-popping color into your wedding. 186

nola weddin g guide

www. no l a we d d i n g g u i de . c o m

Fabric As the air turns cooler, winter is the perfect season to add depth and layers to your wedding

décor. This year wedding elements, such as tablecloths, chair covers and napkins are layered with velvet, lace and sequin. Layers of contrasting fabrics make a powerful, yet subtle statement that will add dimension to your reception décor and leave a lasting impression.

Bridesmaid Dresses Lace: It’s not just for your grandmother’s doily anymore! Lace is making a big comeback on the fashion runways and is being incorporated in not only bridal gowns and bridesmaid dresses, but also by showing up in table scapes, drapery and more. Combine lace with a rich jewel tone

and your bridesmaids’ will be the epiphany of winter elegance and sophistication. Also big this season – black dresses for your bridal party.

Flowers All white or ivory flowers accented with lots of greenery are hot this winter. Adding nonfloral elements such as fruit will give your arrangements definition. Again, the trend with flowers seems to be that of bringing the outdoors inside with lots of greenery. “Bigger is better” this winter with elaborate centerpieces and arrangements becoming the focal point of the wedding.

BASIN STREET New Orleans is a treasure trove of wedding venues, appealing to almost any taste-vintage to contemporary. One such venue, the Basin St Station, which features the Art Deco design of a 1930’s train station and also a spectacular view of the city’s skyline, is perfect for a small, intimate wedding or a rehearsal dinner. We wanted to convey the sense of romance that the Art Deco era inspired, and also add a touch of country chic into the mix. Our New Home by Julie Abreo

Planning

Together

“Your Place or Mine?”

“Space?!”

If you’ve been living apart but have established domiciles, is one better than the other? Can you live with the ghosts of past girlfriends or boyfriends?

Have years of being single caused you to accumulate odds and ends? Are your parents emptying your childhood room and now asking you to take away all of your memorabilia? Are those unpacked wedding gifts too much for a small space? You have two choices: Toss it out or get a storage unit. (By the way, we didn’t mention those short, two-legged creatures called kids. If you plan to have children right away or have inherited a ready-made family, a larger place is a definite.)

“Parents?!” Despite what many believe, temporarily living with mom and dad has its pluses. Rent, utilities, insurance and food are cheaper—and it’s a quick way to save for that down payment on a house. Getting along with parents and privacy issues do present a problem, however.

“Price?!” That perfect apartment or condo might be your answer to a temporary dream, but if rent and fees are over-the-top, dining out and those trips to the nail salon are things of the past. How long will you be there anyway?

“Traffic?!”

“Neighbors!!” Is the unit sound-proof? Will your pets or theirs be a nuisance? Are the neighbors messy? Are they nosey? Can they be trusted? Whoever lives next door lives “with” you.

“Hungry?” Are eateries and grocery stores nearby? Hospitals and doctors? Banks and ATMS? What’s close that’s open 24/7? Lack of these options could be deal-breakers.

Is it close to work or school? Gas prices aren’t going down and car maintenance has never been higher. Will that car that you got for graduation from your parents be up to the trips? Long commutes make for tired evenings. Tired evenings make for . . . North Photography w w w . n o la w e ddi n g g u i de . c o m

If you choose to take things into your own hands, then you must first decide between box and hanger. storage. It may be more practical to store the dress in a box, but hanger storage is the best way to prevent hardto-remove creases. Either way, buy plenty of acid-free tissue paper.

For box storage, line an acid-free cardboard box with the tissue paper and lay the hem of the dress in the box. Fold the dress like an accordion, putting tissue paper between each fold. stuff the bodice of the dress with crumpled tissue. Put some layers of tissue on top and put on the lid (make sure the lid is solid and does not have a plastic window). store the box in a cool, dry closet. Check the condition of the dress each year, and re-pack so the folds are in different places.

5.

For hanger storage, wrap a wide hanger with cotton batting and cover it with muslin. Buy an acid free cardboard “dress shaper” and place it over the hanger. Wrap it in tissue and place the dress over it. stuff the bodice of the dress and any deep folds with the acid-free tissue paper. Cover the dress with a muslin garment bag and hang it in a cool, dry closet, taking care not to crush it with other clothing. Check the dress each year and wash the muslin cover.
