Yerevan, Armenpress - The draft resolution on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide of 1915-1922 has been introduced in Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada. The authors of the aforesaid draft resolution are Verkhovna Rada MPs Arsen Avakov, Vilen Shatvoryan, and Nver Mkhitaryan. As reports "Armenpress" Deputy from Batkivshchyna (Fatherland) parliamentary fraction Arsen Avakov stated this in
his blog on LB.ua. No Armenian family could avert that tragedy." In particular the draft resolution considers the recognition of the Armenian Genocide of 1915-1922 and fixation of April 24 as a remembrance day of the Genocide victims. Also it is stated: "The Genocide issue plays an important role on the international level. It is actual for Ukraine as well... Obama Under Fire In Europe And US For NSA's Massive Spying Net US President Barack Obama has come under growing criticism over the country’s massive electronic surveillance bids across America and Europe as European leaders demand more details on the spying efforts from the US government. Describing themselves as “stunned” over recent revelations of an extensive US surveillance program that included European citizens, top officials in Europe said
Monday they would ask Washington for more information on the issue and discuss measures to further boost their already rigorous privacy laws, The Washington Post reports Tuesday. The disappointment expressed by European authorities, the report says, pointed to the extent of the “fallout from the affair and to the potential for Cont. on page 9
President Obama Nominates Human Rights And Genocide Expert Samantha Power As Next U.S. Ambassador To United Nations
Washington, D.C. - This week, President Barack Obama nominated Samantha Power to be the next U.S. ambassador to the United Nations (U.N.), reported the Armenian Assembly of America (Assembly). Power previously served as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights at the White House. Samantha Power is the Pulitzer Prize winning author of "A Problem from Hell": America and the Age of Genocide (2002), which extensively covers the Armenian Genocide. Reflecting on the conception of the idea to universally ban genocide, Power wrote: "If the international community ever hoped to prevent mass slaughter of the kind the Armenians had suffered, he insisted, the world's states would have to unite in a campaign to ban the practice. With that end in mind, Lemkin had prepared a law that would prohibit the destruction of nations, races, and religious groups." In her 2007 article in TIME Magazine entitled " The U.S. and Turkey: Honesty is the Best Policy," Power wrote about the Armenian Genocide at the hands of the "Young Turk" regime, the birth of the term genocide by Raphael Lemkin, and the litany of excuses proffered by the government of Turkey in their decades-long struggle to deny the Armenian Genocide.
While making her case for U.S. recognition of the Armenian Genocide, Power unambiguously presented her view that "a stable, fruitful, 21 st Century relationship" with Turkey "cannot be built on a lie." "She showed us that the international community has a moral responsibility and a profound interest in resolving conflicts and defending human dignity," Obama said when announcing Samantha Power's nomination. "To those who care deeply about America's engagement and indispensable leadership in the world, you will find no stronger advocate for that cause than Samantha," the President added. Senate Armed Services Committee Ranking Member John McCain (R-AZ) released a statement in support of Power's nomination. "I believe she is well-qualified for this important position and hope the Senate will move forward on her nomination as soon as possible," McCain said. In 2002, Power provided critical guidance to the International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ) regarding the definition of genocide and the question of the applicability of the U.N. Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide to the Armenian case when commissioned by the Turkish Armenian Reconciliation Commission (TARC), which it ultimately confirmed. Power also previously served as a columnist at Time Magazine and, in her journalism career, reported from such places as Bosnia, East Timor, Kosovo, Rwanda, Sudan, and Zimbabwe, and contributed regularly to the New Yorker Magazine , the New York Review of Books , and the New Republic .
Erdogan Pledges ‘No More Tolerance’ For Protest Amid Police Crackdown Turkey has ‘no more tolerance’ for violent protest, Prime Minister Erdogan told the parliament. He was speaking as police used water cannons and tear gas to take over Taksim Square in Istanbul from antigovernment activists. Erdogan lashed out at the protesters as he was addressing MPs on Tuesday. In his speech he separated the peaceful protesters concerned with the development plans at Gezi Park from those in Taksim Square, who he said are responsible for violent clashes with police forces. The prime minister blamed the Taksim protesters of injuring security troops, damaging public property, disturbing public order and damaging Turkey’s image among international investors. Erdogan’s speech came hours after hundreds of police walked into Taksim Square just after dawn and used tear gas and water cannons to fend of protesters at-
tempting to enter it. Police removed protest banners from buildings overlooking the square. The prime minister hailed the move, which he described as tearing down “rags”. Clashes erupted in the streets surrounding Taksim Square, while the police took over part of the square by marching in large formation and then driving out the remaining protesters by rounds of tear gas.

Pope Said Armenians Were Victims Of 'Genocide' Pope Francis, the leader of the world's Roman Catholics, has labeled the deaths of Armenians in 1915 in the Ottoman Empire as genocide, an incident that Armenia and Armenians around the world want to be internationally recognized as `genocide.' Turkey, which sees the allegations of genocide as a threat to its national honor, meanwhile, says the killings were not intentionally perpetrated to eradicate a particular ethnicity but were the result of the wartime conditions during World War I. Turkey also notes that both Muslim and non-Muslims died during the event. The leader of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics said in a meeting with three Armenian religious functionaries who visited him at the Vatican on June 3 that the first genocide of the 20th century was carried out on Armenians, according to a report in the Armenian Weekly posted on June 5. `The first genocide of the 20th century was that of the Armenians,' Pope Francis was quoted as saying when one of the
members of the Armenian delegation, led by Nerses Bedros XIX, Catholicos Patriarch of Cilicia of Armenian Catholics, said that she was a descendant of "genocide victims.' The statement by Pope Francis is seen as a reiteration as he had earlier recognized the so-called `Armenian genocide' while he headed the Catholic Church in Buenos Aires as Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio. The pope, while serving as archbishop of Buenos Aires, in 2006 recognized and also urged Turkey to unconditionally recognize the alleged genocide as the `gravest crime of Ottoman Turkey against the Armenian people and the entire humanity' during a ceremony that marked the 91st anniversary of the 1915 events. According to the report, the statement by the pope is the first such statement from the pontiff since being elevated to pope and leader of the Roman Catholic Church.

While vacationing in Turkey, the American son of a powerful U.S. Senator accidentally parasails into the neighboring country of Armenia. Mistaken by local government officials to be a Russian spy, the man is mercilessly interrogated by his captors until a beautiful female student breaks through the language barrier and comes to his aid. Convince someone along the lines of Daniel Craig or Clive Owen to take the lead role and you've got the makings of a globetrotting political thriller. Cast third-rate comedian Jamie Kennedy, though, and you end up with `Lost and Found in Armenia,' a broad, silly, dated and insensitive mistake of a movie co-written and directed by Gor Kirakosian. `Lost and Found' resembles those lowbrow, one-joke comedies Pauly Shore used to crank out near the end of his film career, just to stay employed - something like `Jury Duty' or `In the Army Now.' Kennedy stars, but the majority of the movie leans on a mixture of Russian, Azeri-Turkish and Armenian performers speaking in their native tongue. As a result, `Lost and Found' relies heavily on subtitles. Unfortunately, reading the film's immature jokes doesn't make them funnier. Kennedy plays Bill, a senator's son whose heart recently was broken by a girl we never meet. His best friend, George (Dave Sheridan), coaxes him to go on vacation to Turkey, where Bill is expected to forget this shrew and start living life again. But the aforementioned parasailing accident carries our clueless protagonist to Armenia, where he contends with a village of suspicious peasants and eventually befriends a
do not know, maybe during my previous visit I missed something, but this time I see fresh, bright and young atmosphere in Yerevan. Five years ago, there was no vivacity in the streets of Yerevan, the city was not so crowded. Now your city has become a multi-color, younger, new buildings are being built …. And it’s not accidental that I’m talking about young people, because the mood in every country is reflected among the youth. – Are you fond of Aram Khachaturyan’s music. What attracts you most in those works. – I like romantic music. And Khachaturyan’s works simply touch your soul and heart, make you become a dreamy. Yeah, I’m romantic and I think that people in Armenia are too romantic. There is something special in the air of your country. Isn’t it? – The main directions of the foreign policy in Armenia is the European integration. Getting into contact with our culture and traditions, what do you think are we carriers of more European, or Asian culture. - The Armenian traditions have deep roots. We have much to learn from you. A few days ago I attended one of your won-
derful museums where ancient manuscripts are kept, and I am very much impressed because I saw the reflection of European history in that culture. Learn about your culture, history, thinkers and philosophers, I realize that the European culture has deep roots in your own land. – You’re coming from the royal family. Taking into into account all luxury and benefits of the status, are there moments that you have to sacrifice. - More precisely, I am from the ruling family, because having aristocratic roots, at the same time I have seen a lot of difficulties. From time to time, my family has lost lands because of the war and has to start everything all over again. I think the most important thing is to preserve the traditions. We were brought up to the ideology that we should be proud of our family, parents and traditions. To have a good education has a great role in this issue. And a good education is not only a problem of money because now there are the best chances for it. We have to think from the prospective that we can change the world. My hope is the youth, and there are bright young people in Armenia. I’m feeling

Lost In Commemoration: The Armenian Genocide In Memory And Identity
9 May 2013 in the Brunei Gallery Building, SOAS, University of London The second instalment in the Programme of Armenian Studies’ Towards 2015 series - a programme of lectures and other events commemorating the Armenian Genocide - saw Dr Uğur Ümit Üngör of Utrecht University deliver a lecture on the issue of the Genocide in memory. The guests were greeted warmly as they entered by the Programme of Armenian Studies’ founder and director, Dr. Krikor Moskofian, and after an impressive introduction by Ara Sarafian, Dr. Üngör launched into the lecture. Specifically, Dr Üngör was addressing the discrepancy between the official history touted by the Turkish state and the personal memories of those Turks, Kurds and Armenians who were alive at the time, and those to whom they have told their stories. He started by saying that the ‘memory wars’ - the intellectual battles between those who would expose the genocide and those who would rather forget it - that characterise the relationship between Armenia and Turkey were reminiscent of those be-

tween Bosnia and Serbia, and were an essential characteristic of all genocides. The animated Dr Üngör then proceeded to make a swift analysis of the Turkish state’s policy of denial; from the destruction of architecture, books and forensic evidence on one hand, to the construction of (false) official histories in school textbooks and academic institutions, it is clear that the control of memory is crucial in the promotion of the denialist agenda. The gist of Dr Üngör’s talk, however, was that in order to get to the truth of the events of 1915, we must look to oral history, to the first- and second-hand accounts of those who remember what happened, be they perpetrators, survivors or witnesses. When Mr. Sarafian opened the floor for questions, there were, predictably, many members of the audience who wanted to share their own memories and experiences. The questions, when they were finally asked, were relevant, but because of the
beautiful college student named Ani (Angela Sarafyan). Sarafyan, it should be noted, is strikingly beautiful, with an angular face and feline eyes that convey concern and empathy when she has to educate Bill on the hardships of life in Armenia. Because she's the only person in Armenia who understands English, she's tapped to be Bill's translator and, obviously, his love interest. Kennedy, meanwhile, isn't asked to do much beyond reacting to a series of idiotic sequences with a dumbfounded stare. He has that down pat. Kennedy might be the only recognizable face in the ensemble, but he largely takes a back seat as `Lost and Found' wastes chunks of time on the cartoonish physical antics of the Armenian townsfolk. Grandpa Matsak (Mikael Pogosyan) acts as the town's inept interrogator, prone to shouting at Kennedy or hitting him with a boot. Ahmed (Serdar Kalsin) is the camouflagesporting village leader, who views himself as the local dictator and suspects Bill as being part of a larger espionage scheme. These aren't characters. They are onenote spoofs of cookie-cutter `foreign' stereotypes even Yakov Smirnoff would dismiss as tedious. The last time this style of hackneyed cultural humor generated significant belly laughs, episodes of `Hogan's Heroes' were an audience's only options. Forty years ago, Peter Sellers might have been able to squeeze laughs out of this tone-deaf material. But we've evolved, both as a society and as an audience. Specifically, we've seen Sacha Baron Cohen eviscerate imbalanced international relations in bitingly sarcastic comedies such as `Borat' and `The Dictator.' By comparison, `Lost and Found' isn't quaint. It's obsolete. O'Connell is a freelance writer. Zero star. Unrated. At AMC Loews Rio 18. The Austrian Princess Listens To Aram Khachaturyan, Admires Young People Of Armenia And Tastes The Armenian Cuisine
The 9th International Competition named after Aram Khachaturyan is held in Yerevan, which, this year, is dedicated to detection of young cellists. The Austrian Princess Irina zu Sayn-WittgensteinBerleburg was among the honored guests of the competition. Aravot.am had the exclusive opportunity to conduct an interview with the Princess. It is presented below: – You were in Armenia years ago. What was Armenia then and how will you describe our country as of today? - The last time I was in Armenia was 5 years ago. Now I see a lot of changes. The first thing that attracted me during these days, was the Armenian young people. I
good in your country. Armenians are very hospitable, your national dishes are so tasty. And the monuments … I visited a monastery that was located on the border with Azerbaijan, the mountain top. It is so close to the sky, it was enough to stretch your hand and you can touch God. Those are my best memories. – Have you heard about the Armenian Genocide held by the Ottoman Empire in the early of 20th century and what is your position on this issue? - I have heard about it and read much. And I think we should constantly talk about it and move the process of recognizing and condemning the crime forward. We must fight and condemn one of the world’s most tragic events of the 20th century. I do not know how I can help, but the most important thing for me is to talk much about the fact, and to find ways on how to bring the culture and problems into our framework. In every way, we must not let such a thing happen again. And only through good education can withhold mankind from such tragic phenomena. Tatev Harutyunyan

Change Of Emphasis? Normalization Without Political Resolution Likely To Be Sought For Karabakh By Naira Hayrumyan
New, but still very weak hints that indicate increased pressure from the international community have appeared in the Karabakh settlement process as there is an increased probability of “normalization of relations” without actually resolving the conflict. Chairman of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Rovnag Abdullayev made a surprise announcement last week, saying that if Armenia asks, Azerbaijan can supply it with natural gas. After this sensational statement, representative of President Ilham Aliyev’s administration said that as soon as Armenia asks for such a favor, Baku will immediately advance its conditions. However, he did not deny the possibility of economic cooperation. So far, relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan on the economic and humanitarian levels have been nonexistent. While the father and predecessor of the current president, Heydar Aliyev, would less interfere with communication between the two countries, while still avoiding economic cooperation, his son Ilham reduced it to zero, choosing to build his policies on Armenophobia. As a result of these policies, Armenia found itself in greater isolation from regional projects. But most importantly, Western countries had to build more expensive regional communications such as railways and pipelines bypassing Armenia. The powers mediating in the Karabakh

settlement, the United States, Russia and France, have sought to persuade Azerbaijan and Turkey to unlock the region, but every time these two countries would advance their condition – “the return of lands in Karabakh”. The Armenian side, despite conducting negotiations, never wanted to give up even some of the territory liberated during the 1991-1994 war. The recent meetings of the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan with their counterparts in Moscow and Washington are likely to have shifted the emphasis in the settlement, and ways of opening up regional communications without a political solution to the conflict are likely to be sought. Purely economic goals appear to be pushed to the forefront. Former U.S. Cochairman of the OSCE Minsk Group and ex-Ambassador to Azerbaijan Matthew Bryza does not hide that he supports the idea of linking a Karabakh settlement (the return of lands) to the TurkishArmenian relations (lifting of the blockade). Bryza explicitly lobbied the interests of Azerbaijan and Turkey, trying to get at least part of the lands back to Azerbaijan. But this policy was not liked by the influential Armenian community in the United States and, apparently, also to the administration of the country, and Bryza lost his position as ambassador to Azerbaijan where two years ago Richard Morningstar was appointed as head of the US diplomatic mission. Morningstar immediately stated that energy issues were a priority, without a linkage to Karabakh. And, apparently, a communication project was offered to Azerbaijan that suits its economic interests. It is not clear yet what price Armenia will have to pay for that and whether Azerbaijan will be able to get at least small territorial concessions from Armenia. Once Turkey’s minister of foreign affairs talked about Armenia’s ceding at least one district in Karabakh… But even small concessions will lead to big changes in the militarystrategic balance, and most likely, Armenia will insist on the opening of communications without a change the status quo. The question is whether Russia will help Armenia in this matter. will match the master's degree. Defense Minister recalled that a concept of military education has been elaborated. Ohanyan said that in recent years serious attention has been given to updating army with professional sergeants. In parallel, contract service is being expanded. This, in particular, refers to border areas. Local residents are involved in combat alert duty. This solves two problems border security and employment.
700 Armenians Leave Country On June 9; Most Say They Won’t Return On June 9, some 700 Armenian citizens from around the country boarded buses and left for Russia. I witnessed this mass exodus at the customs house at Armenian-Georgian border crossing at Bagratashen. Eleven large Mercedes buses lined up at the check point from 11 am to 11pm. The buses were headed to Moscow, Donetsk, Rostov, Krasnodar and points further afield in Russia.
Those leaving hailed from Yerevan, Hoktemperyan, Etchmiadzin, Vanadzor and Alaverdi. One of the passengers Baregham Nikoghosyan, told this reporter that there were thirty residents of Etchmiadzin in the bus he was in. Some of the reasons given by those leaving Armenia were the recent presidential elections, unemployment, low wages, and heavy debt burdens.
Armenian, Azeri FM to meet again to prepare summit talks on Karabakh Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov has announced plans to meet with his Armenian counterpart Edward Nalbandian later this month to discuss preparations for talks between the presidents of the two countries over the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Mammadyarov and Nalbandian held separate talks with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry in Washington and before that both diplomats visited Moscow separately to meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Along with France, the United States and Russia co-chair the OSCE Minsk Group, the international format advancing a peaceful solution to the Karabakh problem. Speaking in Baku on Monday, after meeting the Minsk Group co-chairs in London on his way back from Washington, Mammadyarov said: “The goal of the meeting is to discuss serious issues of Karabakh conflict settlement. I am looking forward to meeting with the head of the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to thoroughly discuss issues of preparing the meeting of the presidents.”
President Serzh Sargsyan, of Armenia, and President Ilham Aliyev, of Azerbaijan, last met in January 2012 in Sochi and then their talks were hosted by then Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. extradition of an Azeri axe-killer of an Armenian serviceman from Hungary and his pardoning in Baku in August 2012. The move by Azerbaijan condemned by the international community called into question further Armenian-Azerbaijani presidential summits as both sides appeared to have toughened their rhetoric and positions in the talks. The OSCE Minsk Group worked towards organizing a Sargsyan-Aliyev meeting on June 12, but late last week it was revealed that they had failed to achieve that. Realistically, international mediators now think the meeting between the two heads of state could take place no earlier than by the end of this summer or even in autumn.
`John Kerry Is Very Interested In The Settlement Of The Nagorno Karabakh Conflict' Baku. Shamil Alibeyli - APA. `US Secretary of State John Kerry is very interested in the settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict and actively contacting with both parties,' US ambassador to Azerbaijan Richard Morningstar told journalists while commenting on the statements of former U.S. co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group Matthew Bryza on the importance of building confidence between Azerbaijan and Armenia and the role of the US Department of State or John Kerry in confidence building. The ambassador noted that Kerry is trying to move Nagorno Karabakh conflict towards resolution: `He met individually last week with ministers of foreign affairs of Azerbaijan as well as Armenia. He is very
interested in this process and I know that there will be progress in resolution.' Commenting on the fact that Presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia won't meet in Salzburg, June 12, the ambassador said: `I think we have to ask them but I am very hopeful and confident that at some point in non distant future the presidents will meet.'
Survey: Azerbaijanis Do Not Believe In Diplomatic Resolution Of Karabakh Conflict
News.Az.- The public opinion polls in Azerbaijan and Armenia, parties to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, have shown that in Azerbaijan, unlike Armenia, a large part of the population does not believe the conflict may be solved by peaceful means. These are the summarized results of the survey "Caucasus Barometer", conducted by the Caucasus Research Resource Center in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia in 2009, 2011 and 2012, it was announced by head of the Center Gursel Aliyev at a conference on Azerbaijan-EU relation on Friday, 1news.az reports.
The polls also showed that both in Azerbaijan and in Armenia, people have no idea how soon it is possible to achieve resolution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The poll results in Azerbaijan were much more optimistic: ¼ of respondents believe that conflict resolution is possible within the next 2-5 years. In both countries, the majority of respondents consider that Russia needs to engage in conflict resolution more closely. In Azerbaijan, a large percentage of population wants to see Turkey as a mediator.

Russia Ready To Consider Asylum For NSA Whistleblower Snowden
A supporter holds a sign at a small rally in support of National Security Administration (NSA) whistleblower Edward Snowden in Manhattan's Union Square on June 10, 2013 in New York (Mario Tama / Getty Images / AFP) Russia is willing to consider granting political asylum for NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, who blew the lid on the US PRISM program, Russian media reported. Snowden dropped out of sight Monday after he was last seen checking out of a Hong Kong hotel. “If we receive such a request, we will consider it,” Kommersant daily quoted President Vladimir Putin's press secretary Dmitry Peskov as saying. Snowden, a 29-year-old former technical assistant for the CIA and current employee of the defense contractor Booz Allen Hamilton, revealed the existence of PRISM, the National Security Agency’s (NSA) massive data-mining surveillance program which gave the agency backdoor access to emails, videos, chats, photos and search queries from nine worldwide tech giants. The whistleblower disappeared after checking out of a Hong Kong hotel, Reuters quoted witnesses as saying. A day earlier Snowden revealed his identity to The Guardian newspaper. The revelations of Edward Snowden have been condemned by senior US lawmakers, who threatened the whistleblower with prosecution. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) on Monday called Snowden’s NSA leaks an “act of treason.” Chairman of the House homeland security subcommittee Peter King stressed that if Edward Snowden is the leaker, then the US “must prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law and begin extradition proceedings at the earliest date." On Monday, Regina Ip, formerly Hong Kong’s top official overseeing security, told reporters it would be in Snowden’s “best interest to leave Hong Kong,” citing an extradition treaty with the United States that was signed in 1996.

preamble and anecdotes that preceded them each time, the Q&A session ended up lasting longer than lecture itself. Personally, I found it frustrating that some people apparently preferred to listen at length to their own voices than have their questions answered by the speaker, but to his credit, Dr Üngör listened patiently and answered all the questions enthusiastically, including a question from Mr Sarafian. It was a privilege to hear these two experts discussing history so eloquently, and I’m sure that everyone who attended Dr Üngör’s talk is looking forward to the next enlightening event to be held by the Programme of Armenian Studies. US Speeds Up Decision For Arming Syria Militants With Lethal Weapons
US officials believe they now need to reevaluate options on Syria and will be doing so at the White House this week." The US may approve delivery of lethal weapons to militants in Syria as soon as this week as Syrian army is making rapid advances against the foreign-backed militants, a new report says. The Sunday report by the Associated Press noted that US officials believe they now need to "re-evaluate options" on Syria and will be doing so at the White House this week. Quoting unnamed sources, the report said the White House meetings are planned over the coming days, as Syrian forces prepare for an attack on the key city of Homs to cut off Syria's armed opposition from the south of the country. The report stated that Obama administration will also weigh the merits of a move to send in US air power to enforce a no-fly zone over Syria. Meanwhile, US Secretary of State John Kerry has put off a planned trip to Israel and three other Middle East countries to
take part in the White House meetings. The Syrian army has regained control of the strategic city of Qusayr near Lebanon's border with Syrian forces making significant advances against militants in other parts of the country. Last week, Syrian troops established control over the strategic town of Qusayr following weeks of heavy clashes with foreign-backed militants. Syrian troops were backed by forces from the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah during the Qusayr operation. The Syrian Army is now in control of most of the towns and villages near the border with Lebanon. There have been reports of heavy clashes between government forces and militants in Aleppo, Lattakia, Idlib, Deir Ezzor and several Damascus suburbs. The Syria crisis began in March 2011, and many people, including large numbers of government forces, have been killed in the unrest. The West and its regional allies such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, are supporting the militants.
Russia Enlists Syrian Kurds For GenevaII
Syrian Kurdish demonstrators hold flags and portraits of jailed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Ocalan during a protest in Derik, Hasakah, Nov. 1, 2012. Members of the Supreme Kurdish Council (SKC), a body uniting Kurdish parties from Syria, went for their first official visit to Moscow on June 2 and met Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov in Moscow, despite internal differences between Syrian Kurds. Moreover, they visited the Duma (Russian parliament) on Friday [June 7]. Syrian Kurdish parties went to Moscow in order to secure participation of the Kurds in the international peace conference Geneva II. They did not participate in an earlier conference of the Western-backed Syrian opposition in Istanbul at the end of May, despite efforts of European countries to convince the Syrian Kurds to join the Western-backed coalition

Jordan Jittery As Assad Troops Advance
Syrian refugees walk at Al-Zaatri refugee camp in the Jordanian city of Mafraq, near the border with Syria, April 25, 2013.
Reports of a major military breakthrough by the Syrian army in Qusair, a strategic town close to the Syrian-Lebanese border, and surrounding areas last week [June 4-7] have given Jordan — which has felt the grave impact of more than two years of instability in its northern neighbor — the jitters. Commentators have tried to analyze the effect of this victory by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime over rebel forces, who had to flee the town after a siege by the regular army and Hezbollah forces that lasted more than two weeks.
The pressing question on everyone’s mind was this: Can Assad survive and win? The answer to this question may determine the future stability of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. For months, since the eruption of the Syrian uprising in March 2011, Jordan has embraced a calculated position, calling for a political solution to the conflict and rejecting foreign intervention. But it also backed efforts to depose Assad and allow for a transitional phase so that the Syrian people could choose a new leadership. It was a tough line to follow.
Armenia Has Improved Its Position In The Global Peace Index Climbing From Last Year’s 115th Place To 98th.
Global Peace Index (GPI) is measuring the relative position of nations’ and regions’ peacefulness. Countries’ peacefulness is measured on 23 indicators, including number of external and internal wars fought, relations with neighbouring countries, level of violent crime, Political instability, exports and imports of major conventional weapons and others. As to the neighboring states, Azerbaijan is ranked in the 126th place, Georgia is 139th, Turkey – 134th and Iran – 137th. Armenia’s scores have improved owing to improvements in relations with neighbours and lower murder rates, the report says. Iceland is named the most peaceful country just as in previous years.
A Free Syrian Army fighter sits at his checkpoint as civilians walk along a passageway separating Aleppo's Bustan al-Qasr, which is under the rebels' control, and Al-Masharqa neighborhood, an area controlled by the Syrian regime. Wladimir van Wilgenburg Renewed clashes between Syrian insurgents and Kurdish groups have erupted in the province of Aleppo and quickly spread to other cities in northern Syria. Several combatants have been killed in fights between Liwa al-Tawhid and its allies and the Kurdish People’s Defense Units (YPG) since May 25 in the countryside of northern Aleppo, after Syrian rebels accused the Kurdish armed group of supporting the besieged Shiite towns of Nubul and Zahra. The fighting is leading to worsening conditions for the Kurdish-dominated district of Efrin, where thousands of Arabs and Kurds fled after fighting worsened in Aleppo. Thomas McGee, a researcher focused on Syrian affairs, told Al-Monitor that prior to the “FSA (Free Syrian Army) siege,” Efrin was already “facing huge problems in accommodating IDPs [displaced persons], especially after the influx from Sheikh Maqsoud [in Aleppo city] when the regime attacked, and the schools and other public buildings that are available are over capacity so people are finding themselves with no shelter at all.”
