Armenia president: We will sign agreement with EU in fall YEREVAN. – Armenia plans to sign a comprehensive and enhanced partnership agreement with the European Union this fall, President Serzh Sargsyan said addressing participants of Baze Pan-Armenian camp, Armenpress reported. “Yes, we are going to sign it in autumn. I am so confident because the document has already been initialed. If I am not mistaken, we have announced in March that the document, in general, is already negotiated, and after that we have initialed it. We have no reason not to sign that document”, the Armenian leader said. President Sargsyan describes as “ridiculous” some foreign media reports alleging that Armenia’s decision to join the Eurasian Union in 2013 was made over a night. “We were holding talks both with the Eurasian Economic Union and the European Union as from the very start both sides told that one would not hinder another. But when the EU said it hinders, what did we have to do?” Serzh Sargsyan said.

US State Department urges Azerbaijani authorities to release Turan agency director Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Tehran of building missile production sites in Syria and Lebanon. His statement came ahead of the talks with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in Jerusalem. Netanyahu said Iran is planning to use Syria as a base for military entrenchment for its goal to eradicate Israel, Reuters reported. Antonio Guterres arrived on his first visit to Palestine after assuming his office as UN chief. On Monday he met with Israeli president Reuven Rivlin and is also expected to meet with Mahmoud Abbas later in the day.
US State Department has urged the authorities of Azerbaijan to release the arrested Turan agency director Mehman Aliyev, State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said in statement. “We are deeply troubled by the August 24 arrest and three month pretrial detention of Mehman Aliyev, the prominent editorin-chief of Azerbaijan’s only remaining independent media outlet, Turan Information Agency. Other restrictive actions against Turan, including freezing its bank accounts and initiating tax evasion charges against it, are also troubling. These actions by the government of Azerbaijan to curtail freedom of press and to further restrict freedom of expression are the latest in a negative trend that includes the government’s May
decision to block access to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and other independent media websites. We urge the government of Azerbaijan to immediately release Mehman Aliyev, and all those incarcerated for exercising their fundamental freedoms, in accordance with its international obligations and OSCE commitments,” Heather Nauert said. Armenian News – NEWS.am reported earlier that OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Harlem Désir, French Foreign Ministry, Secretary General of the Council of Europe (CoE), Thorbjørn Jagland called for the immediate release of prominent Azerbaijani journalist and media expert Mehman Aliyev. !

ARMENIAN ASSEMBLY CO-CHAIR MEETS WITH RELIGIOUS LEADERS IN JERUSALEM
Installation Open at USC Doheny Library August 28 - December 18 Peer into lost worlds represented by vintage Armenian postcards in 3D dioramas, juxtaposed with full-scale murals of contemporary images THE USC INSTITUTE OF ARMENIAN STUDIES presents a one-of-a-kind installation of extremely rare postcards from Anatolia, displayed alongside scenes from many of the same locations captured a century later. “Undeliverable: Postcards and Photos of Lives Interrupted," which runs August 28 through December 18 in USC’s Edward L. Doheny Jr. Memorial Library, revolves around 160 original printed sepia tones, some of which have never been exhibited before, hand-picked from the world’s largest collection of Ottoman postcards. Illustrating the everyday lives of Armenians in cities, towns and villages, these pictorial souvenirs would be banal had their subjects not been exterminated by near-total genocide. Collected over 32 years by Istanbulbased businessman Orlando Carlo Calumeno, the 80,000 unique postcards, all printed between 1895 and 1921, belong to a larger collection of books, furnishings and printed ephemera documenting quotidian life in multicultural, multilingual, turn-ofthe century Anatolia. “The postcards are especially interesting artifacts to work with,” says exhibition co-curator Narineh Mirzaeian, a Los Angeles-based designer and architect. “They’re pre-genocide, but they foreshadow what is about to happen. Or they don’t foreshadow it, which feels even more stark. As a counterpoint to the vintage postcards, the installation features Brazilian photographer Norair Chahinian’s visual explorations into his own Armenian roots. Drawn from two books of his photography, Armenia (2008) and The Power of Emptiness (2012), they include images captured using an antique camera owned by Chahinian’s grandfather, an Anatolian refugee who operated a photo studio in Aleppo, Syria, before joining the Armenian diaspora in São Paulo. Photography and photographic printing, notes the collector, Calumeno, were almost exclusively Armenian trades in Ottoman Turkey. Religious prohibitions against making graven images prevented Muslims from entering the profession until 1910, and it fell to Christians, particularly Armenians, to fill the vacuum. Postcards, he says, “were what the Internet is today”—an easy, low-cost way to preserve a travel memory or to keep in touch with loved ones. “In those days, people received hundreds of postcards from friends everywhere,” Calumeno says. “Most were thrown away.” Some postcards included in the “Undeliverable” installation depict world heritage sites along the Silk Road. Others document ordinary village life and mundane urban structures—a new factory wing, school building or orphanage. Mis-
sionaries used these to support fund-raising efforts. Calumeno, who is Armenian on his mother’s side and Levantine-Italian on his father’s side, focuses his postcard collecting on Anatolia’s diverse minority communities: Assyrians, Jews, Greeks, Kurds and especially Armenians. “The greatness of Anatolia was that melting pot,” he says. “Now it has become a mono-cultural, mono-lingual environment.” His favorite card—the first he ever purchased, at age 16—depicts Istanbul’s Hippodrome Square near Hagia Sophia, the cathedral-turned-mosque and a major tourist attraction. Curiously, on the back side, the sender had jotted down a home remedy for nursing mothers to prevent cracked nipples. The card is addressed, in swirling Armenian cursive, to the woman’s sister in Bursa. “These postcards are very important,” says Calumeno. “Each one is a gateway to connect with the past—a glorious past where everybody called each other ‘my brother, my sister.’ You see these naïve people, not knowing what is going to happen in the future. In these images, they live happily forever.” “Undeliverable” is presented on two floors, in multiple parts, spanning the Doheny Library’s Treasure Room, Rotunda and Arts Corridor. Working closely with USC Institute of Armenian Studies director Salpi Ghazarian, 160 vintage postcards are displayed in vitrines on the ground level, alongside documentary-style black-and-white images taken by Chahinian in recent years. But in the Treasure Room, the curator has taken an unconventional approach. Focusing on 10 of the most intriguing postcards, she has scanned, enlarged and optically separated the images, creating layered, three-dimensional dioramas. Standing at eye-level on tripods, each diorama box invites visitors to peer into a lost world through a time-bending tower viewer. On the surrounding walls and ceiling, Mirzaeian has splashed full-scale murals of Chahinian’s bleak architectural photography illustrating modern Anatolia’s abandoned spaces, including a dilapidated Armenian church dome looming overhead. The installation design invites visitors to navigate the curated scenes at two scales, says Ghazarian—zooming in to study nuances of daily life brought to life in the postcard dioramas, and zooming back out to see the blight left in the wake of genocide. “It’s this surreal emotional landscape where alienation meets nostalgia, what-if encounters why, and despair yields to an irrepressible urge to reconstruct and build upon the erased past,” she adds.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Armenian Assembly of America (Assembly) Co-Chair and Massachusetts Council of Churches President Anthony Barsamian travelled to Jerusalem this month, where he met with religious leaders, including the Armenian Patriarch of Jerusalem, His Beatitude Archbishop Nourhan Manougian. “It was an honor meeting with the Armenian Patriarch and Armenians in Jerusalem and Bethlehem, and holding vibrant discussions with the Armenian community in the Holy Land. The Patriarch made a point to welcome us and encourage Armenian Americans to visit the Armenian Quarter and meet with members of this important Armenian community. His Eminence made sure we had the opportunity to pray with our Christian brothers and sisters at Saints James Cathedral and participate in Divine Liturgy at the tomb of Christ, also known to Armenians as the Holy Resurrection Church and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, while having an opportunity to visit the numerous Armenian shops and enjoy Western Armenian culture which continues to exist since the 4th Century,” Barsamian stated. The participants visited Srpots Tarkmanchatz (Holy Translators) Armenian School within the Armenian Quarter. They were led by Fr. Mardiros Chevian, Dean of St. Nersess Armenian Seminary, and Fr. Krikor Sabounjian, a member of the Eastern Diocese Council and Pastor of Holy Translators Church in Framingham, Massachusetts. They had the pleasure of meeting the Gulbenkian Library Director and Principal of the Tarkmanchatz Armenian School, Very Rev. Norayr Kazazian, who reported the number of students at the school has increased from 90 to 180 in recent years. “This trip to the Holy Land was inspirational and eye-opening. Jerusalem is one of the important centers for us and we should all make an effort to visit the Holy Land and experience the richness of Ar-

Genocide exhibitions typically focus on victims, notes Mirzaeian. This installation focuses on places. “It’s a different approach to what was lost, and what has remained,” she says. “It goes beyond victimhood—all these feelings we slip into that are unproductive. It’s more about re-inhabiting these spaces through the persistent architectural details. Those imaginative realities are interesting because they beg a lot of productive questions. Anytime you can do that, it’s good.” “We’re very pleased to be able to present this immersive installation, in a timeless, three-dimensional space, here in the Library. This is especially important because the library’s long hours (open ‘til 10 pm weeknights, ‘til 8 pm Fridays and Sundays, and 5 pm Saturdays) will make it easy for anyone who wants to spend time in this lost world to attend. Admission, of course, is free,” said Ghazarian.
menian life unbroken throughout the centuries,” Barsamian added. During his visit, Barsamian also met with Rabbi David Rosen of the American Jewish Committee (AJC) and had the opportunity to join Rabbi Rosen in prayer at the West Wall, where they both reflected upon the need for peace and justice following the protests in Charlottesville. AJC Chief Executive Officer David Harris wrote a letter to President Donald Trump, and stated: “What we witnessed in Charlottesville on Friday and Saturday was nothing short of horrifying. It was sickening enough to see people drawn together by the siren songs of white supremacy, the Ku Klux Klan, and neo-Nazism. But however repugnant their views may be, so long as they conducted themselves peacefully, their freedom of speech is protected in our blessed land. But it was abundantly clear that at least some of these racists, anti-Semites, and homophobes came to Charlottesville looking for trouble.” The Foreign Minister of Armenia, Edward Nalbandian, recently held high level meetings with the Israeli Government as relations continue to expand. During his discussion with the Minister of Regional Cooperation of Israel, Tzachi Hanegbi, Nalbandian highlighted the deep historical roots between Armenian and Jewish people, “which create a good basis for the development of inter-state cooperation.” They also discussed holding consultations between the foreign ministries, enhancing their collaboration within international organizations, and increasing inter-parliamentary exchanges, as well as developing mutually beneficial cooperation in culture, science, and education. “I welcome these encouraging trends in Armenia-Israel relations and extend my appreciation to our friends in the American Jewish community who support this development,” Barsamian said. !

Two Literary Pulitzer Prize winners and renowned journalists David and Adi Ignatius to headline INNOVATE ARMENIA 2017 On Saturday, September 23, poet Peter Balakian and novelist Viet Thanh Nguyen will grapple with the shifting place of humanities in a postmodern and possibly “post-book” world. Their conversation is a signature event at INNOVATE ARMENIA 2017—a day of discovery, insightful dialogue, music, food, wine and chess sponsored by USC’s Institute of Armenian Studies. Balakian, a professor of humanities at Colgate University, won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry for his volume, Ozone Journal. The title poem — organized in 54 short sections — drifts from memories of excavating the bones of Armenian genocide victims in the Syrian desert to a montage of other memories—the dissolution of a marriage, life as a single parent in Manhattan, and encounters with a cousin dying of AIDS. Nguyen, a professor of English and American and ethnic studies at USC, won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize in Fiction for his debut novel, The Sympathizer. Set in 1975 at the fall of Saigon, the narrative takes the reader inside the mind of a South Vietnamese army officer secretly spying for the Viet Cong—an honorable man torn between his political convictions and personal loyalties. Nguyen is also the author of The Refugees where he gives voice to lives led between two worlds, the adopted homeland and the country of birth. “Viet’s fiction, beautifully written and sharp, is about refugees. All of them. About their (or, our) aspirations, desires, memories, guilt and a search for self-fulfillment of some kind,” said Ghazarian. Now in its third year, Innovate Armenia explores what it means to be Armenian in the 21st century and celebrates the accomplishments of all innovators. The day’s events include back-to-back speakers in Bovard Auditorium, including a conversation with Washington Post columnist David Ignatius and his brother, Harvard Business Review editor-in-chief Adi Ignatius; and a presentation by Hovig Etyemezian, chief of the Mosul operation of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. David Ignatius and Adi Ignatius will unpack the concept of “global Armenian identity” at INNOVATE ARMENIA 2017. Professor Don Miller of the USC Center for Religion and Civic Culture will moderate the session, which takes place on the festival mainstage in USC’s Bovard Auditorium. What does it mean to be Armenian in America? Is it possible to thrive with both identities, or must Armenian-Americans choose? The Ignatius brothers tackle these
and other thorny issues in lively conversation at USC. To some extent, the Ignatius brothers embody the topic they will dissect. “I grew up with this black number— 1915—as the only organizing fact of my Armenian identity,” said David Ignatius in a video interview recorded last May in Yerevan. Younger brother Adi Ignatius described himself as “half-Armenian” in a 2009 interview. Their mother is a descendent of Puritan minister Cotton Mather. Their father is former Secretary of the Navy Paul Robert Ignatius, the highestranking Armenian-American military official in U.S. history. In April, a Navy destroyer was named after the 97-year-old World War II veteran, who held various pentagon positions in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. (The original Armenian family name was Ignatosian.) David Ignatius detects a sea-change in current attitudes toward hybrid identity. “I think it’s much easier now to have that hyphen,” he told Salpi Ghazarian, director of USC’s Institute of Armenian Studies and organizer of INNOVATE ARMENIA. “It once was a binary choice. People felt you had to jump into the melting pot and get melted.” Fear of being accused of divided loyalty fueled that dynamic, he noted. “During the Cold War, Armenian Americans worried that if they celebrated Armenia, they were celebrating a Soviet republic—not their ethnic identity. That period, happily, is over.”
About the Speakers: Viet Thanh Nguyen was born in Vietnam and grew up in America. The Sympathizer is his first novel. The Refugees is his second. His short stories have appeared in Best New American Voices, TriQuarterly, Narrative and the Chicago Tribune. His scholarly books include Race and Resistance (2002) and Nothing Ever Dies: Vietnam and the Memory of War (2016).
Peter Balakian is the author of seven books of poems. His prose works include a memoir, Black Dog of Fate (1997); a history of the American response to the Armenian genocide, The Burning Tigris (2003); and Vise and Shadow (2015), a collection of essays on poetry, culture and art.
David Ignatius has been covering the Middle East and the CIA for more than 25 years. An associate editor and columnist for The Washington Post, he also co-hosts PostGlobal, an online discussion of international issues at Washingtonpost.com, with Fareed Zakaria. His twice-weekly column on global politics, economics and international affairs is syndicated worldwide. A graduate of Harvard College, he studied economics at King’s College, Cambridge before joining the Washington Monthly as an editor. He later moved to the Wall Street Journal as a political reporter and Middle East correspondent. In 1986, he went to work for the Washington Post as editor of the “Outlook” section and oversaw the paper’s Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage of the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. Ignatius is also a writer of suspense/espionage fiction. He has written nine novels, including Body of Lies, adapted to film by director Ridley Scott. His first book, Agents of Innocence, was described on the CIA website as “a
novel but not fiction.” He is currently collaborating with composer Mohammed Fairouz on “The New Prince,” a political opera based on the teachings of Niccolo Machiavelli. Adi Ignatius is editor-in-chief of the Harvard Business Review. He joined the magazine in 2009. Previously, he was deputy managing editor at TIME, responsible for special editions such as the Person of the Year series. He wrote the 2007 Person of the Year profile of Russian leader Vladimir Putin. During his 12 years with TIME, he covered business and international issues and served as editor of TIME Asia, based in Hong Kong. In 2008, he edited the New York Times bestseller, President Obama: The Path to the White House. Fluent in Russian and Chinese, Ignatius spent many years at the Wall Street Journal, serving as the newspaper's bureau chief in Beijing, where his work was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, and later in Moscow. He earned a bachelor's degree in history from Haverford College. INNOVATE ARMENIA 2017—a day of discovery, technology, music, food, wine, chess and lively conversation—takes place Saturday, September 23, 10 am to 6 pm in Alumni Park and Bovard Hall on USC’s University Park Campus. Admission is free. All-day parking is $12 in USC parking structures. Established in 2005, the USC Institute of Armenian Studies supports multidisciplinary scholarship to re-define, explore and study the complex issues that make up the contemporary Armenian experience—from post-genocide to the developing Republic of Armenia to the evolving diaspora. The institute encourages research, publications and public service, and promotes links among the global academic and Armenian communities. FOUR EXCEPTIONAL STUDENTS FROM STS. TARKMANCHATZ JOIN ST. NERSESS SUMMER CONFERENCES ST. NERSESS ARMENIAN SEMINARY Once again, for the 12th year, outstanding students from the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem’s Sts. Tarkmanchatz School joined their counterparts at St. Nersess Armenian Seminary. This year, the St. Nersess Summer Conferences for youth, afforded four Jerusalem students unique opportunities to interact with their Armenian- American peers, strengthen their Christian faith, and experience the special New York environs and flavor. This project was initiated by the Rev. Fr. Mardiros Chevian, Dean of St. Nersess Armenian Seminary, and has been realized by the generous contributions of major donors. This year, the main benefactors of the project were Russell and Susan Kashian (Muskege, WI), with generous support by George and Lorraine Marootian (Franklin Lakes, NJ), Vicken and Rosette Arslanian (Englewood, NJ), Joseph and Kristine Casali (Ramsey, NJ), Gregory and Meline Toufayan (Saddle River, NJ), Glen and Kristin Dabaghian (Ramsey, NJ), and Keith and Karyn Bilezerian (Wrentham, MA). FLOWER IN OUR LIVES The four exceptional students included 17 year olds Ike Demirjian, Hagop Hagopian, Sevana Hekimian, and 15 year old Serena Karin Bush, all of whom spoke with great praise for their student life at Sts. Tarkmanchatz and its principal, the Very Rev. Fr. Norayr Kazazian. Several comments about Father Norayr reflected the love and admiration they felt for him and his leadership of the school which Ike called “very supportive”. He was praised for advancing the school’s its educational programs and its facilities, and for being “close, friendly, kind, caring and principled” with the students . “Sts. Tarkmanchatz has been a beautiful flower in our lives,” declared Sevana. Ike Demirjian who grew up in Tel Aviv and moved to Jerusalem two years ago with his family, “loves Jerusalem and Sts. Tarkmanchatz” where he has served a Student Council president, and started a basketball team which he
coaches. He has decided to either gravitate towards engineering “because I love making things and am very creative”, or the field of medicine “in order to help people.” Born in Jerusalem, Hagop Hagopian comes from a family whose Genocide experiences involved his paternal grandmother who escaped from Eskishehie, and his maternal grandparents from Marash. He sees medicine as his future work. He plans to stay in Jerusalem, attend Hebrew University, then go to the Medical University in Yerevan. Having family in Armenia, and a sister studying medicine there, he has visited Armenia nine times, and especially loves Artzagh, “its nature, endless green mountains and its weather.” Sevana Hekimian ‘s family came to Jerusalem through a journey that involved her paternal grandfather and his uncle from Musaler escaping from the Genocide, going to Syria, Jordan, and finally an orphanage in Jerusalem’s Armenian Convent. There, he met his future wife at the Homenetmen Club. She plans to study economics and accounting management at the Hebrew University, then live and study in Armenia “because it’s time that our generation should be the ones to make the country brighter.” She traveled to Armenia in 2013 with the ARITUN (Return to Armenia) program where young Armenians from around the globe stay in local volunteer homes and interact with the local popula-
“FORBIDDEN JOURNEYS” FILM EVENT TO CELEBRATE LEGACY OF J. M. HAGOPIAN In 1967, a group of Armenian-Americans organized by the National Association for Armenian Studies and Research (NAASR) were among the first to travel to Historic Armenia to find traces of their roots the Turks had left behind. On Sunday, October 1, 2017, portions of J. Michael Hagopian’s documentary film of that landmark journey will be screened along with Ani Hovannisian-Kevorkian’s short documentary on the vanishing traces of Historic Armenia, shot nearly 50 years after Hagopian’s footage. The October 1 program, “Forbidden Journeys,” will present segments of Hagopian’s 1967 film Historic Armenia and of Hovannisian-Kevorkian’s current documentary on the disappearing vestiges of Historic Armenia, followed by a panel that includes Marc A. Mamigonian, Director of Academic Affairs at NAASR, Dr. Carla Garapedian of the Armenian Film Foundation, Dr. Richard G. Hovannisian, Professor Emeritus of Modern Armenian and Near Eastern History at UCLA, and Hovannisian-Kevorkian. UCLA Professors S. Peter Cowe and Sebouh Aslanian will make opening and closing remarks. “Forbidden Journeys” will be the first program in the J. Michael Hagopian Film Discovery Series jointly presented by the Armenian Film Foundation (AFF) and NAASR. It will focus on the pioneering legacy of J. Michael Hagopian – his impact as an advocate for Armenian Studies and as a filmmaker. The 1967 trip was the first of NAASR’s “Armenian Heritage Tours.” The Armenian-Americans who set out on this journey
were the earliest such group to travel to historic Western Armenia. For some, it was a trip back to the places of their birth. Among the travelers was Hagopian, NAASR’s first West Coast director and co-founder of the Armenian Film Foundation. Himself a native of Kharpert and a survivor of the Armenian Genocide, Hagopian shot film on this path-breaking trip, capturing in many cases for the first time post-Genocide images of the Western Armenian homeland. The film has not been screened for over three decades. Fast forward to 2013 when Hovannisian-Kevorkian was traveling through Western Armenia and discovered a lone Scottish explorer/photographer who has spent 30 years quietly uncovering and documenting the vanishing traces of this lost world. Since then she has been filming with him, digging beneath the modern map, encountering stories and physical remnants and revealing the hidden map of Turkey’s forbidden past. Co-sponsored by the Richard G. Hovannisian Chair in Modern Armenian History at UCLA, the Narekatsi Chair in Armenian Language and Literature at UCLA, and the Ararat-Eskijian Museum, the October 1 program will take place at 2:00 pm, at the James Bridges Theater, Melnitz Hall, UCLA. This program is free and open to the public. A reception will immediately follow the program. Parking is available in Lot 3, 215 Charles E. Young Drive North (at Hilgard Avenue). For more information about the program, contact NAASR at (617) 489-1610 or hq@naasr.org. !
tion. “When I got to Zvartnotz Airport, something touched my heart. It was comfort”, she revealed. Serena Karin Bush whose father is German-American, hopes to be a psychologist, or work at the United Nations. “I want to make a difference in the world and help mankind advance in peace.” Her mother’s family is from Marash, Caesarea, survived the Genocide and came to Jerusalem through a long trek from Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and Palestine. In the summer of 2015, she traveled to Armenia “to see my homeland. It was extremely overwhelming. Artzagh was just beautiful and breathtaking, but anger brewed inside of me when I went because my people are getting killed over what is rightfully ours.” ILLUMINATIONS AT ST. NERSESS “Before coming to the St. Nersess program, “my faith was not so strong,” confessed Sevana. “Here I have been going to my room, talking to God and feeling comfortable.” For Serena, “it has been so refreshing, being more exposed to the outside world from the “very traditional atmosphere” in Jerusalem. Though she still has questions, she has become “more strong” in her faith. For Ike, it has been an experience of “thinking out of the box, being more open. Everyone is so energetic, so enthusiastic, so Armenian. You can feel it. I have made so many friends”. He said he had attended many programs before this experience at St. Nersess that have helped him in life. This new exposure “will stay with me forever. I am now more confident, more social and more independent. ” Hagop who had a “burning desire” to come to the St. Nersess summer program “to learn more deeply about Christianity, the experience has “greatly strengthened” his faith. He plans to stay in Jerusalem because he “wants to be helpful to the next Armenian generation in Jerusalem.” Hagop expressed a strong desire that Armenian-American youth also deepen their knowledge of the Armenian language. “In our history we have fought for this. Christianity and our language are integral to our survival.”
