A PUBLICATION OF ARMENIAN DEMOCRATIC LIBERAL PARTY, WESTERN DISTRICT COMMITTEE OF THE UNITED STATES
Ambassador: Armenia will be the only Eurasian Union to have an agreement with EU
Hurricanes Harvey and Irma to cost US around $290 billion Harvey and Irma hurricanes caused around $290 billion in damage to Florida and Texaas, AccuWeather President Joel Myers said in a statement Sunday. Myers added that this is a record damage for the country, and damage caused by Harvey is bigger.
YEREVAN. – Naturally, it is impossible to be in “two zones” at the same time, but this does not mean that a sovereign country cannot choose an appropriate option for itself and plan its future, French ambassador to Armenia told reporters on Tuesday. Jean-Francois Charpentier commented on the fact that Armenia, being a member of the Eurasian Economic Union, intends to sign an agreement with the EU. “On the day when the Armenia-EU agreement is signed, and there are all prerequisites for this, Armenia will be the only country that, being a member of the Eurasian Union, will simultaneously have an agreement with the European Union. This deal will open wide perspectives,” he said. Armenia is expected to sign a partnership agreement with EU during Eastern Partnership summit in November.
Russia ambassador: It is Armenia’s sovereign right to develop cooperation with whom it wants YEREVAN. – It is Armenia’s sovereign right to develop cooperation with whom it wants, noted Russian Ambassador Ivan Volinkin, speaking to reporters on Tuesday. When asked whether the ArmenianChinese technico-military cooperation may impact Armenian-Russian allied relations,
Volinkin also responded: “It’s friendship between Armenia and Russia. There can’t be friendship against someone; friendship comes from the heart.” In the ambassador’s words, Russia has not criticized Armenian-Chinese military cooperation.
Trump to view damage on Florida visit France appoints new ambassador to Armenia President of France Emmanuel Macron signed a decree to appoint Jonathan Lacote as new ambassador to Armenia. Lacote will replace Jean-François Charpentier who has completed his diplomatic mission in Armenia. New ambassador has previously worked as councilor at the French embassy in UK.
US President Donald Trump will travel to Florida on Thursday to survey the damage caused by Hurricane Irma as it tore through the state. It will be Mr Trump's third trip related to hurricanes in two weeks. He will be joined by the first lady. Irma is being linked to at least 12 deaths in the US since it struck as a category four storm on Sunday. Nearly 6.9 million homes were without power in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Alabama. Parts of the Florida Keys, the low-lying islands which bore the brunt of Hurricane Irma, have reopened. But entry is being restricted to residents and business owners as work continues to clear roads and check the state of bridges linking the islands.
Officials estimate that some 25% of homes in the Keys were destroyed while another 65% suffered damage. "So many areas that you would never have thought have flooded, have flooded," Florida Governor Rick Scott said. Mr Trump visited Texas in the wake of Hurricane Harvey on 29 August and returned to the Lone Star state on 2 September, also stopping in Louisiana to meet some of the victims at a shelter. The president will now turn his attention to victims of Hurricane Irma, which left seven people dead in Florida, three in Georgia and one in South Carolina, according to US media. The storm also left a trail of destruction in the Caribbean, where nearly 40 people were killed. BBC
Analyst: Armenia has apparent interest in Iraqi Kurdistan independence referendum Ambassador: Israel supports peaceful settlement of Karabakh conflict Israel supports peaceful settlement of the Karabakh conflict and the efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group in this direction, APA reported quoting Israeli Ambassador to Azerbaijan Dan Stav. Touching upon the fact that Azerbaijan's president Ilham Aliyev pardoned Alexander Lapshin, the ambassador noted that he positively assessed that decision.
YEREVAN. – Armenia’s interest is apparent in the referendum on the independence of Iraqi Kurdistan. Political scientist and former deputy foreign minister of Armenia, Ambassador Arman Navasardyan, said about the aforementioned at a press conference on Friday. In his words, the Kurdish issue touches directly upon the Armenian Question. “Creating Kurdish and Armenian autonomies was spoken about in the Treaty of Sèvres [in 1920],” Navasardyan stated. “There are supporters and opponents of the creation of a Kurdish state. Despite that, in
my view, the process can’t be stopped anymore, and it can’t be stopped in principle; the Kurdish issue will be resolved in any case. In all likelihood, it will happen by way of creating a confederation in Turkey.” The analyst added that in the case of such a development, it will become clear as to the benefits Armenia can gain and what it can lose if a Kurdish state were created in Turkey. Also, Navasardyan expressed a view that the Armenian side should carry out considerable diplomatic activities regarding this matter.

SENATE APPROPRIATIONS COMMITTEE ENSURES CONTINUED FUNDING TO ARTSAKH
CineCulture and Armenian Studies Program to Feature
Fresno State Screening of “The Promise”
Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Thad Cochran (R-MS), Senate Appropriations Committee Vice Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Senate Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Chairman Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), and Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD)
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Senate Appropriations Committee adopted the Fiscal Year (FY) 2018 State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs (SFOPS) appropriations bill, which ensures continued funding to Nagorno Karabakh (Artsakh), reported the Armenian Assembly of America (Assembly). The "Committee recommends assistance for the victims of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in amounts consistent with prior fiscal years, and for ongoing needs related to the conflict." The Committee urges a peaceful resolution to the conflict, which, given Azerbaijan's recent and unprecedented attacks against Armenia and Artsakh, underscores the importance of implementing an accurate cease-fire monitoring system along the line of contact. In the Assembly's testimony earlier this year to the Senate Appropriations Committee, Assembly Executive Director Bryan Ardouny urged robust funding for Artsakh to help meet the ongoing humanitarian and development needs for its people. The Committee also adopted an amendment offered by Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), which would prohibit arms sales to the Turkish Presidential Protection Directorate in light of the vicious attack by Turkey's security detail in Washington, D.C. against peaceful protesters on May 17, 2017. Last week, nineteen people, including 15 Turkish security officials, were indicted as a result of this attack in front of the Turkish Ambassador's residence during President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's visit. The bill also maintains Section 907 of the FREEDOM Support Act, restating the six customary exemptions for humanitarian and other assistance to Azerbaijan. The Assembly continues to call for full enforcement of Section 907 given Azerbaijan's hostile
and aggressive actions against Armenians. "The Armenian Assembly applauds the bipartisan work of the Senate Appropriations Committee and especially appreciates the efforts of Senator Van Hollen in helping to ensure continued funding to Artsakh. His leadership on critically important priorities for U.S. engagement in Armenia and Artsakh is vital, and we look forward to continuing our work with him during this critical time," stated Armenian Assembly Co-Chairs Anthony Barsamian and Van Krikorian. "Moreover, with recent developments by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) shedding light on money laundering by President Ilham Aliyev and his family, known as the 'The Azerbaijan Laundromat,' we are seeing the exposure and rejection of caviar diplomacy done for years," the Assembly Co-Chairs added. As part of the Manager's amendment package, Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) included bill language on visa restrictions for Azeri officials "about whom the Secretary of State has credible information have been involved in the wrongful imprisonment of Mehman Aliyev, the director of Turan, Azerbaijan's last remaining independent news outlet." Similarly, Senators James Lankford (R-OK) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) included language regarding visa denial for Turkish officials involved in prolonging the unlawful detention of U.S. citizens in Turkey. The bill also promotes international religious freedom and protection for persecuted religious minorities, particularly in the Middle East. The $25 million programs also includes $5 million for atrocities prevention programs.
The CineCulture Film Series and the Armenian Studies Program at California State University, Fresno, are sponsoring a special screening of the film The Promise at 5:00PM on Friday, September 29, in the Leon and Pete Peters Educational Auditorium (5010 N. Woodrow Ave., at the west end of the SaveMart Center, near Shaw and Woodrow Aves.), on the Fresno State campus. Filmmaker and The Promise associate producer Carla Garapedian will be present as a discussant and to answer questions after the screening. She is the director of Screamers, a documentary film which focused on the problem of genocide in the world. The film featured the band “System of a Down,” and received international attention. The Promise opened in theaters in April of 2017 and tells the story of the Armenian Genocide through a love story involving Michael (Oscar Isaac), a brilliant medical student, who meets Ana (Charlotte Le Bon). A romantic rivalry emerges between Michael and Ana’s boyfriend Chris (Christian Bale), a famous American photojournalist dedicated to exposing political truth. As the Ottoman Empire entered World War I and the Armenian Genocide began, their conflicting passions were deferred while they joined forces to try to protect the Armenians and survive themselves. The Promise is directed by Academy Award winning filmmaker Terry George. Admission is free, but seating is limited. The screening is open to the public and free parking is available at any of the adjacent Fresno State parking lots (near the corner of Shaw and Woodrow Avenues). For more information about the presentation please contact the Armenian Studies Program at 278-2669, or visit our website at www.fresnostate.edu/armenianstudies.

Get NATO’s Nukes Out of Turkey By Jonathan Marshall, Contributor Independent scholar and journalist Even in this contentious era, one proposition still enjoys nearuniversal support: the United States should make it the highest priority to prevent nuclear weapons from falling into the hands of hostile states. It’s far too late to stop North Korea from getting the Bomb, despite all the militant rhetoric coming out of Washington. But we still have a chance to prevent an erratic Middle East strongman from holding the United States hostage by threatening to seize dozens of deadly hydrogen bombs. I’m referring, of course, to Turkish President Recep Erdogan. As I warned more than a year ago, he controls overall access to NATO’s largest nuclear storage facility—a stockpile of some 50 B-61 hydrogen bombs at Incirlik air base in southeastern Turkey. Each weapon has a yield of up to 170 kilotons, nearly 12 times greater than the atomic bomb that wiped out Hiroshima in 1945. The bombs are a holdover from the Cold War, with no current strategic rationale. They represent a growing risk to U.S. security, not a safe deterrent. As Erdogan’s relations with the United States and Western Europe go from bad to worse, the case for withdrawing those weapons of mass destruction from his reach grows ever more urgent. “It is the worst place possible to be keeping nuclear weapons,” said Joseph Cirincione, a nuclear arms control expert and president of the Ploughshares Fund. Citing
the relocation of American families from the air base as U.S.-Turkish tensions have grown, he asked rhetorically, “it is not safe for our military spouses and children, but it is OK for 50 hydrogen bombs to be there?” His concerns were recently echoed by a “former senior NATO official” who agreed the weapons “should be removed given the instability, both in the country and across the border in Syria and Iraq.”
Growing tensions Although the United States and Turkey are technically NATO allies—and Turkey still allows the U.S. Air Force to conduct bombing raids into Syria and Iraq from Incirlik—there’s growing friction between them. Just the other day, Erdogan blasted the U.S. judicial system as “scandalous” following reports of new indictments against members of his armed security detail who brutally attacked peaceful proKurdish demonstrators outside the Turkish ambassador’s residence in Washington last spring. More than a dozen Turkish security officials have been charged since that melee was caught on video. Erdogan has also bitterly attacked Washington for supporting Kurdish rebels in Syria, whom he regards as supporters of the banned Kurdistan Worker’s Party. As a sign of his anger, Turkish-led forces have directed fire at U.S. allies in Syria, and Ankara recently
Israel Charny commends Stepan Partamian for “Genolive” concept Prof. Israel W. Charny, one of the world’s foremost scholars in Holocaust and genocide studies, has expressed praise for the term “Genolive,” which was coined by Los Angeles author and cultural critic Stepan Partamian. Prof. Charny came across the term while reading an article published in the California Courier. Subsequently he emailed Partamian, commending him for coining the word and stating his wish for its wider dissemination and acceptance. “I like your term ‘Genolive,’” Charny wrote. “It seems so simple and clear and indeed an antidote to rotten genocide. At the same time, I admit that I’m not at all sure about how you (and we all) can generate meaningful recognition of this word and widespread usage. It would do the world good.” In a later email addressed to Partamian, Prof. Charny wrote, “It is an enormous task to get a new word accepted into usage, but even if you do not succeed, you will have made a contribution for some people by introducing the word and its concept into the literature. I hope to refer to it in some future writing, such as a major project I envision about denials of genocide.” As Partamian explains, “Genolive” is meant as the opposite of genocide. “By coining this term, my aim has been to underscore the fact that the Ottoman Turks failed in their attempt to annihilate the Armenian people,” Partamian says. “Accordingly, ‘Genolive’ is a construct that signifies not just the Armenian nation’s survival and recovery, but its ongoing quest to enrich humanity with outstanding contributions, in fields ranging from art, music, literature, and cinema to sports, politics, science, technology, and medicine.” Prof. Charny is a co-founder and past president of the
published the location of U.S. special forces in that country, putting them at risk and triggering a Pentagon protest. Showing no deference toward his allies, Erdogan has jailed an American pastor, a French journalist, and at least a dozen German citizens on apparently trumped up political charges, despite pleas by senior government officials from those NATO countries. An angry German Chancellor Angela Merkel recently said Berlin needs to “react decisively” against Turkey’s violation of its citizens’ rights, and “rethink” its relations with Ankara. As international human rights groups point out, those Westerners represent only a tiny percentage of the victims of Erdogan’s authoritarian crackdown since the failed military coup against his regime in 2016. Under the ongoing state of emergency that Erdogan imposed, authorities have opened criminal investigations against more than 150,000 people accused of supporting the coup. “As a result of the crackdown, some 50,000 people languish in jail,” writes John Dalhuisen, Amnesty International’s European director. “Among them are at least 130 journalists, the highest number of any country in the world. More than 100,000 public sector workers, including a quarter of the judiciary, have been arbitrarily dismissed . . . and hundreds of academics were cast out of their jobs.” Erdogan has warned that the
state of emergency may be extended several more years. He also vowed to show no mercy to his enemies: “First, we will chop off the heads of those traitors. When they appear in court, let’s make them appear in orange suits like in Guantanamo Bay.”
Washington’s ambivalence Such authoritarian outbursts are deeply embarrassing to NATO, which professes democratic values. Left to his own devices, President Trump would likely ignore Ankara’s transgressions, out of gratitude for Erdogan overseeing the launch of Trump Towers in Istanbul in 2012. But the special prosecutor’s investigation of his first national security adviser, Michael Flynn, for failing to register as a lobbyist for the Turkish government last year, has undoubtedly forced Trump to keep greater distance from Erdogan. As a result, Trump’s attitude toward Turkey—as with so many issues—appears conflicted. In a recent snub, the Pentagon refused Ankara’s request to send personnel to train Turkish F-16 pilots, to
International Association of Genocide Scholars. He is a longtime Executive Director of the Institute on the Holocaust and Genocide in Jerusalem, and now also the Executive Director and Editor-in-Chief of Genocide Prevention Now, a worldwide webmagazine. In a paper Prof. Charny gave in Athens in September 2010, at a conference devoted to bringing together co-victims of the Armenian Genocide, he presented publicly for the first time a proposal for a new organization of survivors of different genocides in the world, together with other caring people. The organization would be called R2L (Right to Life). In 2011, Prof. Charny received Armenia’s Presidential Prize, in recognition of his landmark contributions to genocide studies. Apart from creating the term “Genolive,” Partamian has turned the concept into a palpable project. Since 2009, he has been interviewing Genocide survivors as well as their descendants in order to showcase their contributions to American civilization and humanity as a whole. “While we Armenians have rightfully focused on the horrific aspects of the Genocide, from the deaths of over 2 million people to the loss of our territories and wealth, we have all but disregarded our nation’s stunning tenacity in its bid to regroup, rebuild and revitalize itself, and go on to make positive contributions to our countries of residence — by creating and inventing things that have helped transform humanity. Now the Genolive Project is my way of celebrating and showcasing what is unquestionably positive about Armenian life in the past 100-plus years.” Next, Partamian plans on making a major documentary based on the “Genolive” concept. Toward this goal, he will interview scores of individuals, including not just Genocide-survivor descendants who have made major contributions to humanity, but, as importantly, persons in various countries, including Turks, who are among those benefiting from Armenian contributions. The documentary will also showcase the achievements of those whom Partamian has interviewed since 2009. !
replace the several hundred fighter pilots dismissed in the wake of last year’s coup attempt. On the other hand, Washington seems committed to using Incirlik as its primary base from which to carry out air strikes in Syria and Iraq. According to Stars and Stripes, the Pentagon wants to spend about $26 million to house 216 more U.S. airmen at the base. (It also plans to spend another $6.4 million to support a missile defense radar site in Eastern Turkey. The good news is that the additional airmen aren’t pilots, but Air Force security personnel, charged with improving base security. If that’s a first step toward safeguarding NATO’s hydrogen bomb stockpile, we should all applaud. But 216 men can’t stop the Turkish army from seizing those weapons if Erdogan ever decides he wants to hold NATO hostage or turn Turkey into a regional superpower. There’s only one truly secure solution to this growing nuclear peril—total redeployment of these weapons back to the United States. www.huffingtonpost.com
Report: $7 Million Payment Tied to Hungary's Extradition of Azerbaijani Axe-Murderer A new report has uncovered a $7 million payment from Azerbaijan into a Hungarian bank account, timed suspiciously closely to Budapest's extradition of a convicted axemurderer to Baku, where he was given a hero's welcome and pardoned. Research by Hungarian investigative journalism NGO Atlatszo.hu, along with the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) and other media outlets, recently uncovered data showing how a $2.9 billion slush fund tied to Azerbaijan’s ruling elite had been used to promote Baku’s political objectives worldwide. Some of these funds – totaling more than $7 million - reportedly made their way into account of the Budapestbased MKB Bank right around the time the government of Hungary handed convicted killer Ramil Safarov to Azerbaijan. According to Atlatszo.hu, the Hungarian bank account belonged to an offshore company, Velasco International Inc., owned by the son of an influential politician in Baku. Eight years prior, Safarov, then a lieutenant in the Azerbaijani army, murdered Armenian army lieutenant Gurgen Margaryan in Budapest. The two were in Hungary participating in a NATO-sponsored language program. Safarov walked into the sleeping Margaryan’s dormitory, partially decapitating him with an axe before stabbing him repeatedly in the chest. Safarov was soon arrested and tried in a Hungarian court where he was convicted of murder in 2006 and sentenced to life in prison. Just after his meeting in Baku, the Orban government allowed Safarov to be extradited to Azerbaijan, prompting an international outcry. Armenia later severed diplomatic ties with Hungary as a result, and unsubstantiated theories proliferated. www.eurasianet.or!

Armenian Opera "Monk" Revival New York City NEW YORK - For the first time in almost a century, composer Barsegh Kanachian’s opera Monk, a tragic love story set on the shores of Lake Sevan, will be featured on the world stage at The Master Theater under the artistic direction of Gosh Sargsyan, musical direction of Knarik Vardanyan and featuring the talents of Astghikner Youth Choir and the Shushi Dance Ensemble. This special event, under the auspices of His Eminence Khajag Barsamian, Primate of the Diocese of the Armenian Church of America (Eastern) and sponsored by the Sahakyan Brothers, was brought to life through the shared musical passion of producers Maria Sahakyan, a New York-based vocalist and Sargsyan, who hails from Armenia and has directed creative works both in the homeland and abroad. “One of our unique cultural pieces of the Armenian musical world is the Monk opera,” said Sargsyan, who has taught at the Abovyan Armenian State Pedagogical University for the past 14 years. “And after nearly eight decades of silence, I feel pride that we are able to stage this production in New York City.” Not only is the opera being given a rebirth, it is also the debut performance of youth in Monk. In addition to lead actors Artur Babayan and Alen Manukyan, the opera will feature the voices of Armenians from the homeland and the Diaspora, alongside New York-based musical students of all backgrounds - from Mexican to Jewish to Russian to Georgian - who learned Armenian music under the training and guidance of Sahakyan. The youth, aged 4-17, are members of Astghikner Youth Choir, which was founded by Sahakyan during her time as a teacher at St. Gregory Armenian Church Mission Parish of Brooklyn, New York. She welcomed anyone with a desire to learn Armenian music. “Music and opera has no language and no religion,” said Sahakyan, who studied vocals and piano at the Komitas State Conservatory of Yerevan. “Music unites us all and brings us together.” Rehearsing since February, Sahakyan notes the youth’s dedication, who stay active and engaged during their five-hour rehearsals. All talented in their own right, the children are pursuing music both inside
and outside of school. And by joining Astghikner, they have made new friends and shared a cross-cultural experience while keeping Armenian music alive. “I like singing because I feel happy when I’m on stage and it’s been fun to work with other kids on this opera,” said Dea Arabuli, a kindergartener who decided to join Astghikner to learn about the Armenian music and culture. “I’ve learned a lot over the past few months, especially the certain ways to talk in Armenian and pronounce the words,” said 11-year-old Emily Plakht, a student in the musical theater program at IS 228 in New York. “I love singing and feeling the music, which is always a part of me.” This won’t be the first time Emily is on stage as she won first place in the musical Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs at Carnegie Hall. “It’s my life’s work to work with kids and I can’t imagine my life without it,” said Sahakyan, who is a private vocal coach and serves in the St. Vartan Cathedral Choir. “The children may be small stars now but I know they will grow up and become big stars.” The skillful voices of these youth will indeed enhance the experience of Monk, which takes place on an ancient island of Sevan, where a church is built at the request of Princess Mariam. When her brother and his daughter, Seda, come to see the church on a raft, the stormy lake flips them over. A monk saves Seda from drowning in the lake but he then loses the peace of his soul and body and his inner world becomes filled with Seda’s magic vision. Every night on Lake Sevan, the monk stares into the sky and waits for Seda’s call. Unable to move on from his love for her, he throws himself into the water. “Our main goal is the preservation of Armenian art around the world,” said
Sargsyan. “This is a unique cultural experience where children of all nations will unite and sing together is Armenian language,” said Sargsyan, who has been working with children in the theater and opera worlds for almost two decades. The melancholy yet alluring story comes to life with the charming décor, set pieces, handmade costumes and the artistic performances of the Shushi Dance Ensemble. The opera will be featured in the First Time Around the World Stage series, with plans to perform around the world so that Kanachian’s masterpiece will continue to delight a new generation. A composer and conductor who studied musical theory, Kanachian was born in the Ottoman Empire in 1885 and contributed greatly to the Armenian culture while living in the Diaspora, with stints in Istanbul, Paris, Cyprus and Lebanon, where he died in 1967. He is mostly known for arranging the music to the Armenian national anthem, Mer Hairenik along with the famous traditional Armenian lullaby Oror Im Palas. A meeting with Komitas Vardapet in 1910 helped him decide to become a musician and dedicate his life’s work to the Armenian people. Kanachian’s own daughter, Seda, will travel from Beirut to New York with her daughters to see her father’s opera come to life on the stage after 80 years. “Music has always played an important role in the life of the Armenian people, as a force that brings us together,” said Archibishop Barsamian. “That great tradition has also left an imprint on the operatic stage, as newer, younger talents, add their distinct voices to our national chorus. The future will be enriched by the creative powers which are alive in our younger generation--as this opera, Monk, reminds us.” “We don’t want this opera to die,” said Sahakyan. “We want it to live, like Bizet’s Carmen, and we want to uphold our Armenian artistic tradition while doing so.” The Monk opera will take place on Friday evening, October 13, 2017 at the Master Theater, 1029 Brighton Beach Avenue in Brooklyn, New York. Chapman University Presents Knowledge Without Action: The Case of Germany during the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire Dr. David Crowe and Dr. Richard Hovannisian in Conversation Moderated by Dr. Jennifer Keene ORANGE, Calif. – Chapman University’s Rodgers Center for Holocaust Education will host a conversation on the Armenian Genocide with distinguished scholars and Chapman University Presidential Fellows Dr. Richard Hovannisian and Dr. David Crowe. Their conversation will focus on recent research on the Armenian Genocide, including the foreign office records of Germany, Turkey’s most important ally during World War I. These detailed reports of German diplomats, missionaries, and businessmen raise the crucial question of why knowledge alone is not sufficient to stop genocide. The event is part of the Center’s series “History, Mem-
ory, Justice.” Dr. Richard Hovannisian is Professor Emeritus of History at UCLA and Adjunct Professor of History at USC. He has published more than 30 volumes on Armenian history and culture, including Looking Backward, Moving Forward: Confronting the Armenian Genocide. Dr. David Crowe is Professor of History Emeritus at Elon University and the author of the definitive biography on Oskar Schindler, as well as numerous books on the history of genocide, including War Crimes, Genocide, and Justice: A Global History. The conversation will be moderated by
Dr. Jennifer Keene, Chair of the Department of History in Chapman University’s Wilkinson College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences and current President of the Society of Military History. This event will take place September 26, at 7 p.m., at Chapman University’s Fish Interfaith Center – it is free and open to the public. Parking for events is available on campus in the Fred L. Barrera Parking Structure on Sycamore Street and the Lastinger Parking Structure on Walnut Avenue. Permits costing $2 for two hours and $3 for four hours may be purchased at each structure. !
SO, GET READY Vahe Berberian’s New Monologue Opens on September 17, in Glendale “I think this is my most contemporary piece”, says Berberian speaking about his latest monologue Ooremn, “That’s why I’m excited and I can’t wait to see the reaction of the public”. Ooremn is Berberian’s sixth monologue after Yevaylen, Nayev, Dagaveen, Sagayn and Yete. The show opens on September 17, at the Glen Arden Club, in Glendale and Berberian is thrilled, because four years have passed since the opening of Yete and he misses being on stage in Los Angeles. “This is the most challenging time for me, because I need to cut another half an hour from the monologue in order to trim the fat”, says Berberian, “Like the previous ones, when I first put the whole thing down it was almost three hours long. Slowly I was able to cut an hour from it, and now I need to trim another half an hour.” Berberian doesn’t want to elaborate on what Ooremn is about, but he says, like the rest of his monologues, this one also touches on the many aspects that bring absurdity to our existence. He also assures that the audience will have no difficulty roaring with laughter. Christina Shirinyan, who has been producing Berberian’s shows, says she couldn’t wait for the artist to finish his tours to be able to concentrate on his new monologue. Shirinyan says she is excited, because Berberian’s events, in any creative field, create an incredible enthusiasm within the community. “This time the venue is a lot larger, more comfortable, and the audience can come early and enjoy the charming bar or sit at the patio and enjoy a cigar”, says Shirinyan. The dates of the performances are: September 17, 24, and October 1,7 and 8. The bar is always open, so the public can come in at any time. The show starts at 8PM. Tickets are $40 and it’s first-come, first served table seating. The address Glen Arden Club, 357 Arden Ave, Glendale, CA 91203 For tickets and information you call 818.299.1154 or visit www.itsmyseat.com/ooremn
