Armenians Of Kessab Get Armenian Passports

Consul General of Armenia in Aleppo Tigran Gevorgyan visited Kessab and Latakia on September 4-6.

He hosted the ceremony of handing over Armenian passports to Kessab Armenians. Congratulating Armenians of Kessab, Tigran Gevorgyan noted inflexible will and great desire to live in their land.

Mayor of Kessab Vazgen Chaparyan thanked Armenian authorities for attention and care.

The ceremony was followed by a meeting during which Consul General and Kessab mayor discussed the problems of local residents.

Pope Francis Will Visit Armenia, Turkey Pope Francis has confirmed during a private audience with the Turkish Ambassador to the Holy See, Kenan Gürsoy, that he hopes to travel to Turkey in the near future, Daily Sabah reports.

The 77-year-old pontiff’s comments came on Monday as Gürsoy visited him to bid farewell, as the ambassador is due to leave Rome following the end of his assignment.

Francis is expected to visit the Turkish

capital of Ankara on November 29 and then Istanbul, in order to celebrate the feast of Saint Andrew the following day, according to media reports. He is expected to use the visit to call for an end to the killing of Middle Eastern Christians in Iraq and Syria.

Diplomatic sources said the pope told the Turkish envoy he was looking forward to visiting Turkey, after which he is also expected to visit Armenia.

Greek Parliament Adopts Measure Criminalizing Genocide Denial

NKR President Meets French MPs

The Parliament of Greece on Tuesday adopted a bill that criminalizes the denial of the Armenian Genocide and other crimes against humanity, Asbarez reports.

Greece becomes the third European country after Switzerland and Slovakia to adopt such a measure.

The bill known as “Fight against Xenophobia” envisions bringing criminal charges for denial of the genocides of not only Jews, but also Armenians and Pontus Greeks.

The bill stipulates heavy fines and imprisonment terms for individuals who publicly deny genocides and other crimes against humanity that are recognized by the Greek Parliament and international courts.

On 9 September Artsakh Republic President Bako Sahakyan received a group of French Senate and National Assembly members, NKR President’s Press Office reported.

Issues related to Artsakh-France relations, Azerbaijani-Karabakh conflict settlement and regional trends were touched upon during the meeting. Special attention was paid to the development of parliamentary ties.

According to President Sahakyan, Artsakh sees France as a friendly country and is interested in deepening relations with it on a continuous basis.

US, Armenian Governments Sign $2.3m Agreement On Assistance To Armenia’s Judicial System

Armenia’s Minister of Justice Hovhannes Manukyan and US Ambassador to Armenia John Heffern signed on Tuesday an amendment to the Armenia-US intergovernmental letter of agreement on drug control and cooperation in law enforcement.

The amendment envisages $2.3m additional aid to a number of programs in Armenia’s judicial system, reports the press service of Armenia’s Ministry of Justice.

Ambassador John Heffern thanked Minister Manukyan and noted that Armenia’s penitentiary institutions, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Police and Prosecutor’s Office are the USA’s key partners in this field.

Austria’s Government To Grant !600,000 To Syrian Armenians The Minister for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Austria Sebastian Kurz, accompanied by his delegation, visited the Armenian Red Cross Society.

The Austrian diplomat got acquainted with the results of the program “Support to Syrian Armenians” implemented with the financial assistance of the Austria’s government. Armenpress reports that Sebastian Kurz expressed his gratitude to the Armenian Red Cross Society for the reception and stated that it is a great opportunity to get acquainted with the process of the program implementation.

“We are aware that especially the refugees are in a very vulnerable situation and the program is quite useful to improve their life quality. I am happy to inform you that we will continue assisting the program and will grant another !600,000 to contribute in the program”, - said the Austria’s FM.

Farewell, Dear Maestro

By Baydzig Kalaydjian My pen rebels against marking the end of the precious life that is truly sacred for each Melkoniantsi. The farewell ceremony that took place was a tribute to our idol, Maestro Sebouh Apkarian. All the segments of our nation revere him. He achieved this with his undeniable merits, many gifts and talents, dedication and seriousness.

Truly, all things good, right and beautiful were shining in the life of Maestro Apkarian, a pure intellectual whose heart was a lyre, whose thoughts were a book and whose soul captured your breath. He was a flesh-and-bone idol revered by the Armenian nation. The witnesses are the legions of those generations firmly ensconced in all the corners of the world that learned from his noble spirit.

In the Armenian reality, it is a rare phenomenon to see an individual win the sympathy and respect of all segments of the nation. He did not want medals or honors as the success of each student was a medal on his chest. He was an ideal teacher of the arts, a spiritual mentor, a conductor who taught classic and folk songs and who treated his students honestly. His sweet disposition shined with talent, a titanic personality that brought out respect for him in everyone.

He was a philosopher, friend, mentor, teacher, orator, preacher, sports-lover and he always aimed high in everything and he raised others with him, till the shining peak. And it was so in everything, always upwards…

Despite his bold stance, he never looked down on anybody but rather the opposite — he bowed before the weak and

showed the path for development to the ignorant and taught to articulate in beautiful Western Armenian. He gave to everyone his mind and heart, and everyone bowed down before the great mentor.

Wit and smiles were typical of him.

Until today, echoes from Melkonian’s study desks, stadiums, choir halls reflect the literary and musical Friday night programs.

Their warmth has also been reflected in our independent Fatherland thanks to the performances of the KOHAR ensemble. He was proud of “his new Yerevan.” Owing to him, Gumri revived and rose like a phoenix from ashes. He welcomed the Lachin pass and prospering Artsakh. Beyond that, he relentlessly attacked the parasites and deserters of the nation, the ones selling off the national assets and the ones in support of that.

Maestro Apkarian was a wonderful mix of noble and lofty aspirations. He believed in the KOHAR ensemble and was lucky to find his worthy place in that noble Armenian institution. With his unique and imposing look, he shied away from the spotlight, believing in his soul that the only thing that mattered was the Armenian spirit. Melkonian shaped his soul with the world of art. It planted the seeds of art whose growth and blossoming granted him deep satisfaction.

And through KOHAR he carried out his goals in the world of art. He fell down on his knees at the altar of Armenian music and culture and lived in a trance while performing. He spread the meaning of AypPen-Kim around the world.

His message remains and we pay tribute to his memory.

Aram Saroyan is the son of famed Armenian author William Saroyan and the actress Carol Grace Matthew. According to Truman Capote, Carol’s personality was the inspiration for the Holly Golightly character in the novella Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

She was twice married to Pulitzer Prizewinning writer William Saroyan over an eight-year period. The couple had two children: Aram and the late actress Lucy Saroyan, who died in 2003.

She was also married to actor Walter Matthau, from August 21, 1959 until his death on July 1, 2000; they had one son, Charles Matthau, a Hollywood film producer. She had a wide social circle and was known for her wit and good company, amongst them, her very dear friends Gloria Vanderbilt and Oona Chaplin.

“We are truly pleased and excited,” stated Silvia Salmastlian, Chair of the St. James Ladies Society, “that internationally known poet, novelist, biographer, memoirist and playwright Aram Saroyan has taken time from his busy schedule to address our guests. We have appropriately selected ‘Food for Thought’ as the theme for our luncheon this year.”

Aram Saroyan’s poetry has been widely

anthologized and appears in many textbooks.

Complete Minimal Poems received the William Carlos Williams Award from the Poetry Society of America. Saroyan’s prose books include Genesis Angels: The Saga of Lew Welch and the Beat Generation, Last Rites, a book about the death of his father, the playwright and short story writer William Saroyan, and Trio: The Intimate Friendship of Oona Chaplin/Carol Matthau/Gloria Vanderbilt. His First Prose book, The Street: An Autobiographical Novel, was recently reprinted in a 40th Anniversary edition.

The recipient of two National Endowment for the Arts poetry awards (one of them for his controversial one-word poem “lighght”), Saroyan is a Past President of PEN USA West. From 1996 -2011 he taught in the Master of Professional Writing Program at USC. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife, the painter and architectural historian Gailyn Saroyan. The AGBU Melkonian Alumni Association “Memorable Middle Eastern Brunch” Pasadena, CA – The AGBU Melkonian Alumni Association, chaired by Paul Kousharian, held a “Memorable Middle Eastern Brunch” at the AGBU Vatche and Tamar Manoukian Center this past Sunday, August 24, 2014.

The chairman of the AGBU Western District Committee, Krekor Karaguezian, attended the event, and Melkonian alumnus Zarmouhie Minassian made welcome remarks. The event had approximately one hundred and fifty guests in attendance, many of them alumni members from the AGBU Hovagimian-Manoogian, TarouhiHagopian and Lazar Najarian schools, and their families. The guests had many cheerful reunions with fellow alumni as they reminisced and shared stories of their AGBU school years.

In true Armenian style, the event left an impression of joy and camaraderie. Attendees were all smiles as they got to catch up with old friends and meet new ones over an

abundance of delicious traditional food. Together, guests enjoyed a variety of Middle Eastern breakfast favorites including foul, roub, mamouniye, and more.

In addition to the fellowship shared over a hearty meal, the Association also took the time to honor one of their own respected alumni, Sebouh Abcarian, Director and Conductor of the Kohar Symphony Orchestra and Choir, who recently passed away on August 4, 2014. Guests honored the Maestro’s memory with a moving tribute and screening of his best works with Kohar. Overall, the event was celebratory, joyous, and culturally enriching.

Omer Laciner (born Aug.10, 1946 in Sivas - Turkey) is a Turkish author and publisher. He graduated from the Military Academy in 1966 and while serving in the army , he became a member of a socialist political organization.

He was dismissed from the army in 1971 and imprisoned for three years. In 1975, together with Murat Belge and Can Yusel published a socialist culture promoting monthly magazine "Accumulation" , which prior to 1980 military coup in Turkey, was recognized as the leader of a youth group. He left the country after 12 Sept. 1980 military coup and lived in France for a while (Accumulation was suspended,1980-89). He returned to Turkey in 1989 and became again the executive editor of "Accumulation". His published books are, Rethinking Socialism-P1, Rethinking Socialism-P2, Socialism Revolution , Army barracks Constitution, Poverty Cases For a New Left Imagining, Once upon a time there were Armenians*(co-writer) ,and many other books. His translations are, Marx 's Philosophy and Marx 's Sociology. Omer Laciner was awarded in 2001 by the" Turkey Publishers Association- Freedom of Expression Award."(1) Under a head line "Armenian genocide commemorated for first time in Turkey", "http://www.network54.com/Forum/248 068/ (April 24.2010) " stated " Though similar demonstrations have become a tradition, this year was somewhat different because a group of Turkish intellectuals expressed their sadness over the sufferings that occurred almost a century ago. New Jersey’s Leo & Sona Manuelian Spend Their Summers Assisting Armenia’s Homeless Families Volunteers Spend Their Vacations Building Homes for Armenia’s Homeless RIVER VALE, NEW JERSEY – From July 17-28, 2014, Leo and Sona Manuelian of New Jersey led a home building mission to Armenia under the auspices of the Fuller Center for Housing Armenia (FCHA).

Since 2010, together they have dedicated every summer to assisting the homeless in Armenia; they have led five teams and more than 75 volunteers from the United States. Their story of selfless devotion to their brothers and sisters in Armenia is inspired by their deep Christian faith. Leo and Sona are doing what most Diasporan Armenians only think about – they are foregoing trips to tropical islands or tours of Europe and instead are spending their hard-earned vacation money working shoulder to shoulder with Armenian families in need.

Leo's first trip to Armenia was 11 years ago as a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity Armenia. He was so impressed with the work being done to give rural families decent and safe homes that he decided to become a team leader himself. In 2008, Millard Fuller, the founder of Habitat, created a new organization, called the Fuller Center for Housing. Leo decided he would join the new Fuller Center affiliate in Armenia. His close friends and former Habitat staff started the FCHA organization.

Leo's parents were both victims of the Armenian Genocide. His parents often told him the stories of their suffering. Leo explains, “I do this work because I never want to see Armenians forced from their lands.

Homelessness is a problem we can solve, and I am committed to being a part of the solution by building homes for families

who need our help. I do this work with a tremendous amount of pride. I will work with FCHA until the good Lord calls me home.”

With his 2014 trip just a few weeks behind him, Leo is already ordering tools and other supplies to take to FCHA in 2015. Not for one moment does this man stop talking about Armenia, its beautiful people, and the Fuller Center for Housing. And now his wife, Sona, has embraced her husband’s deep-seeded passion.

Sona has been a team leader by Leo’s side for the past five years. Sona shares, “Helping my sisters and brothers in Armenia fills my heart with joy. There is no other country like Armenia.

My roots are here.

Working with the Fuller Center gives me such elation that my heart becomes larger than my body!

We do God-pleasing work. Our team members and the homeowners all join together, hand in hand, to build a new home. Where they had nothing before, the families now have a home and hope for the future. To see the smiles on the homeowners’ faces is priceless. I will continue to come to Armenia and work with FCHA until the day I die!”

This year, Leo and Sona led a team of 14 volunteers from the U.S. Including themselves, the team members were: Beth Broussalian (California), Mary and Benjamin Nikssarian (California), Avedis Kargenian (Illinois), Perry Sarkisian (New

York), Richard Sarkisian, (New Jersey), Sean Hughes (New York), Gary and Christian Khachian (Connecticut), Andrea and Steven Sinnott (Maryland), and Jennifer Mugerditchian (Georgia).

They worked on the home of Archanik and Susanna Simonyan in the village of Kanakeravan, on the outskirts of Yerevan. During their six workdays, the team filled and concreted the floors of the three-bedroom house and insulated the attic with crushed “doof” or “toof”, an indigenous volcanic rock. The remaining days were spent sightseeing in Yerevan and touring breathtaking religious and cultural sites.

To become an FCHA beneficiary, prospective homeowners must complete an application. The application first undergoes a paper audit and then a field audit to determine eligibility. To be eligible, a family must own a half-built home or a home in need of renovation; have an income which can sustain the family, but is not enough to allow them to complete construction of the house on their own or to pay off a bank loan; and, as a result of these factors, live in substandard housing (typically, a portion of the uncompleted house, a “domik”, or a borrowed home). FCHA has no shortage of applicants.

In addition to its sweat equity, the ben-

eficiary family is only required to cover the cost of basic materials (what the Fuller Center calls “the economy of Jesus”). Upon completion and occupation of the house, the cost of materials is converted to an interest-free mortgage, which the family pays in an affordable monthly amount. These funds are then used to purchase materials for other villagers’ homes. In the more than ten years that this work has been advanced in Armenia, approximately 650 families have been provided with an affordable and decent home.

The positive impact of the FCHA program extends beyond the tangible economic and social benefits. It has proven to be 100% effective in stemming emigration.

NOT ONE FAMILY HELPED BY FCHA HAS EMIGRATED. From the perspective of the volunteers, this experience allows them to learn about the homeland and enjoy the satisfaction of engaging in a truly Christian experience. It’s a win-win-win situation!

Consecration Of St. Hovhaness Church In Berd September 14 Construction Sponsored By Major Benefactor John Stephens Of Fresno The faithful in the town of Berd, the center of sixteen villages of the Shamshadeen Region of the Tavoush Marz, Republic of Armenia, anxiously await the consecration on September 14th, 2014 of the new St. Hovhaness Church, which will replace the St. Gevork Church destroyed by the Soviets in the 1920's. The newly completed Church was made possible by the generous financial support of late benefactor from Fresno, California, Mr. John D. Stephens. It has enabled the spiritual revival of this major center in Northeastern Armenia. His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos of all Armenians, in recognition of the generosity of its major benefactor, decided to rename the Church St. Hovhaness in his honor.

The late Benefactor John Stephens (Stepanian) was born on August 28, 1928 in Fresno, California to Dickran and Ardem Stepanian, who immigrated to the United States from the Western Armenia cities of Kharpert and Ordu, respectively, prior to the Genocide of 1915. Mr. Stephens lived in Fresno his entire life and died on April 19, 2007, at the age of 78.

Reverend Der Aram Mirzoyan, is the pastor of the new Church as well as the spiritual leader of the entire Shamshadeen region, population 31,000. Born in the Shamshadeen village of Chinari on the border of Azerbaijan, he is youthful, charismatic, energetic and dedicated to the revival and survival of the region’s strategic border communities. He is concerned

with not only restoring the Christian faith of the population, but also helping solve the social, economic and security issues of the region, endangered by continuous sniper attacks from bordering Azeri snipers.

Der Aram commented, “Without the generosity of Mr. Stephens the building of our St. Hovhaness Church would have remained only a dream. Now that we will again have a Church in the center of Berd, we can fulfill our God-given duty to revive and enrich the Christian spirit of our population, which was dormant for 70 years during Soviet rule”.

A close personal acquaintance of Mr. Stephens, Deacon Allan Yeghia Jendian of Fresno, California, said, “Mr. Stephens was a kind and generous individual, always ready to assist his church and worthy causes in the community.”

Mr. Stephens was a grape grower for 47 years in Kerman, a rural area outside of Fresno, California. He was an active and dedicated member of St. Paul Armenian Church, serving on the Parish Council several terms, as its Chairman in 1989, and on numerous other church committees. His life was spent worshiping God and giving of himself to his church.

In the summer of 2006, he fulfilled a lifetime dream by visiting Armenia and meeting with His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians, and pledging his financial support to fund the building of two new churches in Armenia, approxi-

mately $1 million of which went towards the construction of Berd’s St. Hovhaness Church. The Very Rev. Fr. Sasoon Dz. Vartabed Zumrookdian, the Vicar of the Tavoush Region at the time of Mr. Stephens’ visit, was his pastor in Fresno from 1990-1999. Mr. Stephens was honored in Armenia during this first and only visit.

Jack Medzorian of Winchester, Massachusetts, who has visited Berd annually for the past 25 years commented, “We are delighted that Mr. Stephens decided to help build the new St. Hovhaness Church, especially in this important regional center of Armenia. I was privileged to participate in the ground-breaking/blessing of the Church foundation in the spring of 2012, and honored to become one of its godfathers. Mr. Stephens made a wise decision in selecting this location, as the new Church will help restore hope and the Christian spirit of the faithful in Berd and surrounding villages, threatened daily by Azeri aggression”.

Mr. Stephens’ legacy of service to the Armenian Church and the Armenian nation will remain for years to come as a major benefactor to Holy Etchmiadzin, the Western Diocese of the USA, St. Paul Parish of Fresno, and now, the St. Hovhaness Church in Berd. His memory is a shining example of a truly dedicated Armenian who not only cherished his Armenian heritage but gave generously of his energy and resources to perpetuate it.

He was preceded in death by his parents Dickran and Ardem Stepanian. He cared for them with love and kindness into their later years. He was survived by his sister Isabel Torosian, now deceased, and two nephews, Harry and Richard Torosian,

niece, Dorothy Nugent, and seven greatnieces and great-nephews. Funeral services were held at St. Paul Armenian Church on April 27, 2007 followed by interment at the Ararat Armenian Cemetery of Fresno.
