Erdogan To EU: Keep Your Opinions To Yourselves PanARMENIAN.Net - Turkey's president on Monday, Dec 15, rejected the European Union's criticism of police raids on media organizations in the country, telling the 28-member bloc to "keep your opinions to yourselves," the Associated Press reports. The EU has criticized Sunday's police raids, which targeted a newspaper and a television station affiliated with the U.S.based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen — a one-time ally of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan who has turned into one of his biggest critics. Erdogan has accused Gulen's followers within the police and judiciary of being behind corruption allegations that rattled his government last year and has vowed to go after his group.

Family Saved From Captivity In Azerbaijan, Talks About The Horrors The five members of an Armenian family having returned to the homeland after being held in captivity in Azerbaijan for five years told journalists about their living conditions in Baku. “We lived in the building of the military police in Baku. We had a refugee status, but lived like hostages,” the head of the family, Yeghishe Gevorgyan said. When asked how they were treated, Yeghishe Gevorgyan said the treatment was inhumane. “I was electrocuted, and they forced my wife to abort our child. We wanted to free ourselves from captivity with her pregnancy,” Gevorgyan added, as “ArmenPress” reports.

Consul Frank Tu: No Change In Procedure For 10-year U.S. Visa

PanARMENIAN.Net - The new visa rules, which the United States has approved for Armenian citizens, envisage longer terms of validity, without other changes in the procedures, Consul Frank Tu said today (Dec 12), introducing recent reforms, Tert.am reports. Under the new measure, which will be effective starting January 1, Armenian citizens wishing to travel to the United States for tourism or business purposes will be granted multiple visas for a maximum period of ten years. Describing the reform as very good news, the consul said he hopes that it would also boost the tourism development. According to Tu, best efforts are made to facilitate the visa application procedures. As he noted, last year the U.S. Embassy launched a new program enabling citizens to obtain visas without interviews. As for the visa issuance procedures, he said it is a completely different process. Ambassador John Heffern, in turn, hailed the visa facilitation agreement in promoting closer ties between the citizens of Armenia and the U.S.

BBC Radio 4 Traces The History Of The Armenian Diaspora In a program to be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 from December 29 to January 2 writer and historian Charles Emmerson traces the history of the Armenian diaspora through Europe’s Armenian communities today, according to the BBC’s Media Center. From Manchester, home to Britain’s oldest Armenian community, Charles travels to Paris, the largest and most dynamic Armenian diaspora community in Europe, still living in the shadow of the memory of the massacres and deportations of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire in 1915. In Venice he meets the monks charged with the safe-keeping of Armenian traditions of literature and song on the monastery-island of San Lazzaro. In Istanbul he hears the more recent stories of the city’s Armenian community, subtle archi-

tects building a new relationship between Turks and Armenians from the foundations up. Finally, at the foot of Mount Ararat, in Yerevan, underground jazz music and Syrian refugees tell a new story, of a new focus for Armenian identity, and fresh challenges to its survival. Armenians have long struggled to keep their common identity alive in communities dispersed around the world – in Cyprus, Iran and Venice. They became leading figures in Ottoman Istanbul. In the 19th century some moved to the dirt and damp of the booming textile city of Manchester, establishing themselves in the city’s middle-class suburbs and building the first Armenian church in northwest Europe.

Over tea and cake in warm family homes, Charles hears the stories of a tiny but close-knit community, now concerned about how to keep alive its identity, language and religion for a new generation of Mancunian Armenians. The church holds services just once a month, when a priest comes up from London. Some ask whether there will be an Armenian community in Manchester at all in 50 years’ time.

Leaders In The Argentinean-Armenian Business World Offer Their Expertise To A New Generation On October 9, 2014, the AGBU Young Professionals of Buenos Aires (YP Buenos Aires) hosted an inaugural conference at the local AGBU Center, aiming to promote the professional development of Armenians ages 16 to 45 and foster the growth of the Argentinean-Armenian community. It was held in association with the Embassy of the Republic of Armenia in Argentina, Cámara Argentina-Armenia and PLAS [Profesionales Latinoamericanos Armenios en Salud] and sponsored by Aeropuertos Argentina 2000, Dental Medrano, Edelflex, Naku Construcciones SRL and Ritex. Attended by over 100 participants, 70 percent of whom were new to YP Buenos Aires, the event began with welcoming remarks by Ana Sagrian, YP Buenos Aires treasurer and co-founder of the hospitality consulting group MAD About Hotels. Sagrian commented on the work of YP Buenos Aires, presented the objectives of the conference and introduced the first speaker, Juan Carlos Balassanian, the vice president of distribution sales for the Latin American division of the Turner Broadcasting System. In his presentation, Balassanian discussed various components of strategic negotiation, including models, stages and tools for practical application in both personal and professional realms. After a brief break, during which attendees were invited to network with their peers, the conference resumed with two breakout sessions led by Adrián Gabriele

and YP Buenos Aires committee member Juan Pablo Artinian. Gabriele, director of the sales and marketing firm HLT Network, delivered a presentation on leadership and cultural change within companies. He provided information on developing efficient teams and managing employees to achieve desired results. Artinian, a professor of history at the University of Buenos Aires, focused his talk on academic development and encouraged the members of the audience to consider opportunities to continue their education at the graduate level in Argentina and abroad. He also emphasized the importance of creating ties in academic and non-academic environments with professors, researchers and mentors. The entire group came together once again for the final speaker, Matías Gainza

Eurnekian, the president of Unitec Blue, the first microchip company in Latin America. Eurnekian discussed planning and management within organizations, the development and administration of companies with diverse business models and his experiences with business in Armenia. The evening closed with a cocktail reception where the participants and speakers had a chance to create a network of professional contacts. For Julia Malumian, a real estate agent in Buenos Aires, the conference was the perfect opportunity to meet professionals in fields other than her own: “In today’s world, we rarely get to share experience or talk to one another, sometimes even when we’re working in the same office!” The conference also proved rewarding for students preparing for their careers:

“The three presentations that I heard were captivating, because they were on topics that had to do with issues that could arise in daily life and questions that we have had at one time or another,” said Meliné Dicranian, a senior at the AGBU Marie Manoogian Institute who plans to study industrial engineering at the University of Buenos Aires next year. Alexis Mouradian, a student majoring in business administration at the University of Buenos Aires, echoed Dicranian’s sentiments, saying: “This experience was extremely enriching. The presentations allowed me to analyze businesses from the behavior of individuals and not only see them as ordinary transactions. The speakers knew how to captivate the audience and express their ideas very clearly. This YP event showed me that great things can come out of AGBU and it is a motivation to continue working for our community.” To learn more about YP Buenos Aires, visit www.ypbuenosaires.com.ar. For a video about the conference, visit the YPBuenosAires YouTube channel. The AGBU Young Professionals is a growing network of groups and supporters around the world who are committed to preserving and promoting the Armenian identity and heritage through educational, cultural and humanitarian programs for young Armenians between the ages of 22 to 40. Turkish Intellectuals Who Have Recognized The Armenian Genocide

The Unhappy Birthday (Based on a true story) By Alice Krumian The elegant party was in its full swing, With dances, songs, laughter and music, Echoing throughout the house on that special day, In celebration of their firstborn grandchild’s birthday. Suddenly, Father and Uncle, as if on a sign, Set down their goblets, still half-full of wine, Informing the company, in a great hurry: "We'll be back very soon, please don't worry". Their intention was merely to take a quick ride, In the new sports car they had just acquired; To test, once more, the speed limit of the engine, To ascertain the potency of that mighty machine. Their absence lingered on from minutes to hours, Amid toasts, congratulations and goodwill wishes; Then gradually and bit by bit subsided the merriment, The excitement sank, and the waiting turned terrible. Questioning each other, concerned and perplexed, Hosts and guests would whisper, "Why are they so late?"; In the gloomy silence, when the telephone rang suddenly, Fear in their hearts, they jumped to their feet instantly. The receiver was at once picked up by Grandpa, Next to him, anxiously, was waiting Grandma, Surrounded by the Uncle, the Aunty, and the Mom, They all got the message, and stood petrified. What was the import of that voice unknown, Was it cheerful news or something sullen? The perplexity melted away suddenly, As the shocking news spread instantly. "Accident, my two sons, the new car, they're all gone", Was lamenting Grandma, grief-stricken and forlorn; Her firstborn grandchild, held firmly against her heart, She was shedding tears, tearing every heart apart. Amid her choking sobs, she was heard mumbling: "Happy Birthday, my love; they're all gone, darling; Gone without return, gone forever, Uncle, Dad, How can I endure such loss and survive, tell me". The innocent chubby baby, unaware of the tragedy, Watched Grandma's tearful eyes and smiled sorrowfully; Placing his curly head on Grandma's shoulder tenderly, He babbled gently: "I love you much, my sweet Nanny".

Between 1999 and 2000, he did research work on "Turkey of the 21st century" as a Public Policy Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Int. Several hundreds of nationalists gathered in front of the university shouting out slogans "Betrayers", "It's Turkey - love it or leave it". During a briefing for members of the press, eggs and tomatoes were thrown at journalist Cengiz Çandar, as a sign of protest.(3) Çandar has been to Armenia several times and closely follows Turkey-Armenia relations. He wrote many articles concerning Turkish-Armenian relations, "TurkeyArmenia – In the freezer" On 23 April 2010, "From Yerevan to Bursa: writing history anew" On 14 October On the road without return 10 October 2009.(4) Scott Peterson wrote in the "Christian Science Monitor- March 17, 2010", Prime Min.Erdogan, was angry over the decision by a US congressional committee and by the Swedish parliament to call the 1915 deaths of up to 1.5 million Armenians a “genocide,”. NATO member and EU candidate Turkey does not want to be lumped with Nazi Germany, Cambodia, or Rwanda as perpetrators of genocide in the 20th century. “There are currently 170,000 Armenians living in our country,” Erdogan told the BBC Turkish service in London. “Only 70,000 of them are Turkish citizens, but we are tolerating the remaining 100,000. If necessary, I may have to tell these 100,000 to go back to their country” .“It seems a very careless statement,” says Mr. Çandar. I don’t think that he will be implementing that, sending Armenians working here back to Armenia,” says Candar. “But it is a signal sent to Armenia to deter them from supporting [such] genocide resolutions out

loud.” (5) On March 20, 2010, Taraf newspaper wrote " The Prime Minister criticized Cengiz Çandar (of Radikal newspaper) who asked for a public apology for the PM’s earlier deportation threats to Armenian illegal immigrant workers ." “These claims [of Armenian Genocide] are baseless and cannot stain our history…I am calling on those journalists and others who try to give us humanity lessons: Be Turkey’s and the Turkish Nation’s lawyer first. … I am calling on those who advice me to apologize: We know whom to apologize very well. Whose lawyer are you?”(6) The following are some excerpts from Çandar's article " Turkish Awakening on Armenian, Kurdish Issues? Al-Monitor , April 28, 2013". He wrote, "For the past 3 years, Turkey has been holding, Armenian massacre [1915] observations at Taksim Square. The first, at Haydarpasa Station, which was the starting point of Istanbul’s Armenian intellectuals on their trips of no return. It was repeated in 2012 with larger crowd which met in Sultanahmet tourism area, where Armenian intellectuals and politicians were first assembled and then detained in 1915. This year, the dimensions of April 24, 1915, suddenly changed. The observances spread to Turkey’s most important political center of Diyarbakir and to Dersim. As the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide approaches in 2015, could there be a totally unexpected development on the Armenian issue in Turkey? Will this affect Turkish-Armenian relations and change the geopolitics of the Caucasia? That is a question to ponder as 2015 nears. The answer might not be all that difficult if one looks at the developments on the Kurdish issue in 2013 and the recent observances of the 1915 disaster defined as genocide that fell upon the Armenians. The impossible is impossible in Turkey.(7)

*Aghtamar is the second by size of four islands in Lake Van in Western Armenia ,(currently occupied by Turkey). It is well famous for it's Armenian Cathedral of the Holy Cross. In 1951 the Turkish government made a decision to destroy the church, but the writer Yasar Kemal managed to stop the destruction. Between May 2005 and October 2006, the church underwent restoration program. The cross which was sent by the Armenian Patriarchate of Turkey was erected on the top of the church on October 2, 2010. after being sanctified by Armenian clergymen. Since 2010, every year a mass is held in the church too. 1.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cengiz_%C3 %87andar 2 . h t t p : / / w w w. w r m e a . o r g / 2 0 0 0 december/armenian-genocide-resolution-nearlythe-end-of-a-beautiful-u.s.-turkey-relationship. html 3.http://www.armeniapedia.org/wiki/Conference. 4.http://www.esiweb.org/index.php?lang=e n&id=322&debate_ID=4&slide_ID=8 5- http://www.csmonitor.com/World/Middle-East/2010/0317/Armenian-genocide-talkhas-Turkey-threatening-to-expel-Armenians 6- http://www.joshualandis.com/blog/nationalist-first-islamist-second-the-armenianissue-shows-the-limits-of-the-erdogan-governm ent 7-http://www.al-monitor.com/pulse/originals/2013/04/pkk-withdrawal-armenian-genocide-day.html

Georgians And Iberia (Iveria): Claims Without Understanding The Concept Of Identity Sometimes people misunderstand the concept of identity, the concept of ethnicity. An ethnic group cannot exist without a name or with a different name. An ethnic group is defined by various factors. One of which is an ethnonym. If Georgians existed but they were not called Georgians nor Kartvelians , then how were they different from Abkhazians who also existed in the area? And don’t tell me because of the language, because there are plenty of ethnic groups who speak a similar language or a language derived from the same mother tongue that consider each other ethnically different. I can name many examples among the Slavic people, the Germanic people and so on. The Dutch speak almost a dialect of German, but don’t tell the Dutch they are Germans. So, the argument about Georgians existence, but not having a proper ethnonym does not apply. An ethnic group is formed through the language, genetics, common history, common culture, common ethnonym and often (but not always) common religion. All these are important factors. Without an ethnonym there is no way of making a distinction between various mountain dwelling tribes of similar linguistic and cultural affinity. One good example is seen from ancient texts where classical writers ALLWAYS make a distinction between Colkhians and Iberians. Ancient Colchians were Egyptians who were in detail described by Herodotus. “For the people of Colchis are evidently Egyptian, and this I perceived for myself before I heard it from others. So when I had come to consider the matter I asked them both; and the Colchians had remembrance of the Egyptians more than the Egyptians of the Colchians; but the Egyptians said they believed that the Colchians were a portion of the army of Sesostris. That this was so I conjectured myself not only because they are dark-skinned and have curly hair (this of itself amounts to nothing, for there are other races which are so), but also still more because the Colchians, Egyptians, and Ethiopians alone of all the races of men have practised circumcision from the first.

Syria Conflict: Rebels Capture Key Idlib Army Bases

Rebel groups, including al-Nusra Front, are believed to control much of the countryside of Idlib province Al-Qaeda's affiliate in Syria and allied rebel groups have taken control of two key army bases in the northern province of Idlib, activists say. Members of al-Nusra Front, supported by those from Jund al-Aqsa, captured Wadi al-Deif base on Monday after launching a fierce offensive on Sunday morning. Ahrar al-Sham later joined their assault on the nearby Hamidiya base. Forces loyal to President Bashar alAssad had until now managed to repel a number of assaults on the facilities. Situated outside the town of Maarat alNuman and next to the country's main north-south motorway, they have been surrounded since 2012.

The Phenicians and the Syrians who dwell in Palestine confess themselves that they have learnt it from the Egyptians, and the Syrians about the river Thermodon and the river Parthenios, and the Macronians, who are their neighbours, say that they have learnt it lately from the Colchians. These are the only races of men who practise circumcision, and these evidently practise it in the same manner as the Egyptians. Of the Egyptians themselves however and the Ethiopians, I am not able to say which learnt from the other, for undoubtedly it is a most ancient custom; but that the other nations learnt it by intercourse with the Egyptians, this among others is to me a strong proof, namely that those of the Phenicians who have intercourse with Hellas cease to follow the example of the Egyptians in this matter, and do not circumcise their children.” (Herodotus, The Histories, Book 2: 104) Yet Georgians somehow claim heritage to both. Even though it is clear from records that these two kingdoms have not been of a single ethnos, in fact they fought each other on numerous occasions. Georgians lay

claim to just about any ancient tribe from Laz, Araratian (Urartu), Muskhi, Saspires to Colkhians and Iberians, simply because they have no clue and no one recorded Georgians nor Kartvelians. Our classical writers referred to them as barbarous tribes living above us. That is why they were made up of so many tribes like Svans, Mengrelians, Kakhetins and so on, most of whom consider to be distinct from Kartvelians. Their ethnic formation is in fact not that old. Of course, they have old genetics. All living humans are just as old. We all by definition of existence have an unbroken chain of genetic material from the very beginning of life itself passed down from generation to generation until it reached us. So in that sense yes all Georgians have ancient roots, they did not spring forward out of nothingness. But we are talking about formation of an ethnos here. And it is clear that Georgian ethnic formation did not take place until AT LEAST the 5th century when Armenian nobles united various tribes of the north into a somewhat single unit. That’s the fact most people forget about.

Kazakhstan To Ratify Armenia’s Accession To EEU By December 23 Kazakhstan will ratify the Treaty on Armenia’s accession the Eurasian Economic Union by December 23, Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev said at a meeting with Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev. “Starting from January 1, 2015, the two nations will be cooperating as part of the Eurasian Economic Union. There has been a certain decrease in the bilateral trade in monetary terms; however, the physical amount has been on the rise. Once prices

for commodities recover, the trade figures are set to change significantly for the better. Shared customs borders, freedom of movement of people and cargoes are a great benefit for people of the two nations”, President Nazarbayev said. “We’ll meet in Moscow on December 23. We’ll ratify Armenia’s accession. Maybe, Kyrgyzstan will also be ready by that time,” Nazarbayev said, according to the official website of the Russian Government.

According to Giorgi Melikishvili, Iberia was derived from the Armenian designation for the place ( later to become Georgia), Virk’ (Armenian: !"#$, and Ivirk’ [%&"#$] and Iverk’ [%&'#$]). Georgian Chronicles CHAPTER 2 In the same period there came to the country of Iberia some fugitives from the Greeks, Syrians, and Khazars who were harassed by their enemies. The Iberians accepted them to aid themselves against the Iranians. Also at that time came Jews who had escaped from Nebuchadnezzar (Nabugodonosor), who had captured Jerusalem. And they requested a place for worship from the tanuter of Mts’xet’a; and he gave them [an area by] a stream on the Arag river called Zanaw, now called Xerk. Up to this point the language of Iberia was Armenian. But then the Iberians started to be changed by the peoples dwelling among them, and there occurred a mixing up of everything, leading to that which is presently called Georgian. Subsequently, they elected a religion and a conduct more immodest and indecent than all people’s. For in marriage they made no differentiation among the same and related lines, they ate every creeping reptile, insect, and carrion, and had no graves.” At that time six languages were spoken in Iberia: Armenian, Khazar, Syriac, Hebrew, Greek, and the result of their commingling is Georgian. According to Georgian medieval Chronicles “The Conversion of Kartli” (!"#$%&'( #')*+,-'() Georgians themselves come from another place (Iran presumably). On another account The 11th-century Georgian monk Arsen, the author of metaphrastical reduction of “The life of St. Nino” and tutor of King David IV of Georgia, states: “We, Georgians, are descendants of the newcomers from ArianKartli, we speak their language and all the kings of Kartli are descendants of their kings”. In contrast to Georgians the Armenians never described ourselves as newcomers. !
