Turkish PM Says Aims To Solve Issues With Armenia, Poses Conditions PanARMENIAN.Net - Turkey’s Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu yet again named conditions for opening the border with Armenia – a release of at least one “occupied Azerbaijani region,” Trend reports citing Haberturk. According to Ahmet Davutoglu, Armenians living in Turkey are part of the country and should not suffer because of the relations between Ankara and Yerevan. “Turkey aims to solve the problems with Armenians,” Davutoglu added, noting that Ankara doesn’t regard Armenian Diaspora as an enemy. “We share the pain that Armenians suffered,” he said. Touching upon the celebrations of the centenary of the Battle of Canakkale, the PM underscored that the celebrations have no political overtones.
U.S. Jewish Groups Back Azerbaijan Despite Rights Concerns Washington - Azerbaijan has long lauded its relations with pro-Israeli groups that advocate on its behalf in Washington, a bond rooted in Tel Aviv’s rapport with the former Soviet republic that touts itself as a haven for the Jewish people in the Muslim world. And amid mounting international criticism of Azerbaijan’s human rights record, U.S.-based Jewish organizations are standing firm in their support of Baku, which they see as a linchpin of stability in a region replete with governments hostile to Israel. "Our message is clear and consistent: Azerbaijan is an important strategic partner for the United States and the West, as well as a valued friend of Israel and the Jewish people," American Jewish Committee (AJC) executive director David Harris said in a statement last week following a meeting in Baku with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. “France should Recognize Crimea As Part Of Russia” - Le Pen The leader of the French National Front Party, Marine Le Pen has urged the French government to recognize Crimea as part of Russia’s territory and to restore ties with Moscow, a “natural ally of Europe.” There is no alternative, but to recognize the legality of Crimea’s ascension into the Russian Federation, Le Pen told the Polish Do Rzeczy in an interview.
Armenia Takes A Step Back From Normalization With Turkey Istanbul - Armenian President Sargsyan have taken a step back from the peace accords of 2009, created by football diplomacy and international pressure for stability in the Caucasus Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan said on Monday he withdrew from parliament landmark peace accords with Turkey, setting further back U.S.-backed efforts to bury a century of hostility between the neighbors. The two countries signed accords in October 2009 to establish diplomatic relations and open their land border, trying to overcome the legacy of the events of 1915 and later events that led to the death of thousands on both sides. The process had been deadlocked as both Ankara and Yerevan have accused the other of trying to rewrite the texts and setting new conditions. Many Armenians want Turkey to recognize the 1915 events as genocide and pay reparations, proposals Ankara balks at.
Neither parliament has approved the deal, which would bring huge economic gains for poor, landlocked Armenia, burnish Turkey's credentials as an EU candidate and boost its clout in the strategic South Caucasus. "We were ready for a fully-fledged settlement in our relations with Turkey by ratifying these protocols, but we were also ready for failure," Sargsyan said in a letter that had been sent to the parliament, his press service said. He blamed Turkey for "absence of the political will" in finding solution. DAILY SABAH WITH AGENCIES
Armenian President Withdrawing Armenian-Turkish Protocols From Parliament Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan has addressed a letter to Armenian parliament Speaker Galust Sahakyan notifying about his decision to withdraw the Armenian-Turkish protocols from the parliament. The letter reads as follows: “We fully imagined all possible developments when embarking on the normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations without preconditions. We were ready for both comprehensive normalization of relations through ratification of the protocols and their failure because we had nothing to hide and it would be clear for the international community which side was to blame for failing to open the last closed border in Europe and missing the chance. “About six years have passed since the protocols were signed. During this period, Armenia has always demonstrated a consistent position on the implementation of the protocols.
“ H o w e v e r, we must point to the lack of political will of the Turkish authorities, the distortion of the letter and spirit of the protocols and the repeated mention of preconditions. In parallel with this, on the eve of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, the policy of denial and editing history is gaining a new momentum. “I have said repeatedly that time is not endless, I also said this in September 2014 at the UN General Assembly. I regret that the Turkish authorities turned a deaf ear to Armenia’s call. “Therefore, I have made a decision to recall from the National Assembly the protocols “On establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Turkey” and “On the development of relations between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Turkey,” signed in Zurich on October 10, 2009.

AGBU President Berge Setrakian Speaks At The American University Of Armenia: Priorities, Opportunities, And Challenges For Armenians Yerevan – On January 30, 2015, the American University of Armenia (AUA) welcomed Berge Setrakian, the President of the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) and member of AUA’s Board of Trustees, for a talk on “Priorities, Opportunities, and Challenges for Armenians.” AUA President Armen Der Kiureghian introduced the speaker and announced that Mr. Setrakian has established an endowment in memory of his father, Hmayak Setrakian, the income of which will go towards AUA Faculty Research Awards and Faculty Teaching Excellence Prizes in the coming years. He went on to say that “AGBU is one of the three founding organizations of the university and has continuously provided financial support for our programs and students. Our entire community is anxious to hear the views of the president of AGBU. We are grateful to AGBU and warmly welcome President Setrakian to give his remarks.” Mr. Setrakian covered many topics throughout his speech, touching on the geopolitical and socioeconomic challenges that Armenia is facing. He cited national se-
curity, increased emigration, and scarcity of jobs as some of the biggest issues Armenia is facing today. During his speech, Mr. Setrakian spoke to the youth of Armenia, urging them to be an active part of the change that is happening within the country. “You are smart, you are capable, and you are the future of this country,” he said. “Our dream is to build a strong Armenia. AUA is AGBU’s number one priority, as it is an invaluable institution that is shaping the youth of the country,” stated Mr. Setrakian. He went on to say that, “AUA stands for principles. It stands for western values. It stands for human rights. It stands for the fight against corruption. It stands for good governance. AGBU considers AUA one of the best programs that it could support.” The talk was followed by an active Q&A session in which AUA alumni, students, faculty, and guests debated various topics such as the role of the Armenian diaspora, what the upcoming centennial of the Armenian Genocide means for the Armenian community, and AGBU’s mission in developing a “road map” for the future
of Armenia. Berge Setrakian is the seventh President of the AGBU, the world’s largest pan-Armenian organization. Born in Beirut, Lebanon, Mr. Setrakian has been an active, lifelong AGBU member and has held various leadership positions in the organization, becoming president in 2002. His focus is on youth who, as third or fourth generation Diasporan-Armenians, have never closely identified with their Armenian heritage. He has also extended the AGBU’s activities in Armenia and the Diaspora, focusing on new initiatives and projects. In 2011, Mr. Setrakian was awarded with the Order of Honor by the President of the Republic of Armenia for his outstanding contributions to protecting the country’s national interests, as well as his lifelong, unwavering dedication and patriotic services to Armenia. Founded in 1991, the American University of Armenia (AUA) is a private, independent university located in Yerevan, Armenia and affiliated with the University of California. AUA provides a global education in Armenia and the region, offering high-quality, graduate and undergraduate studies, encouraging civic engagement, and promoting public service and democratic values. !

(1) In December 2008, two hundred prominent Turkish intellectuals released an apology for the "great catastrophe of 1915". This was a clear reference to the Armenian Genocide, a term still too sensitive to use so openly. The signatories also announced a website related to this apology, and called on others to visit the site and sign the apology as well. The complete, brief text of the apology says " My conscience does not accept the insensitivity showed to and the denial of the Great Catastrophe that the Ottoman Armenians were subjected to in 1915. I reject this injustice and for my share, I empathize with the feelings and pain of
my Armenian brothers and sisters. I apologize to them." Ay!e Berktay was one of the Turkish intellectual who has signed the petition. (2) Ay!e Berktay was one of the Turkish intellectuals who signed a petition against Denialist Exhibit in Denmark, an exhibition which was planned by the Turkish embassy to support their point of view concerning the Armenian Genocide . " Don’t Stand Against Turkey’s Democratization and Confrontation with its History! " was the message to the Royal Library of Denmark who has given the Turkish government the opportunity to present an “alternative exhibit” in response to the Armenian Genocide exhibition.(3) In the 99th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, the members of the 24 April Commemorating Armenian Genocide Platform came together in front of the historical Haydarpa!a Railhead to commemorate the Armenian intellectuals who were put in trains from Haydarpa!a Railhead in 1915 and sent to death. The citizens left red carnations on the placards writing in both English and Armenian reading "We are remembering the victims of Armenian genocide" and they carried the photos of Armenian intellectuals. Armenian Genocide Reminder Of Evil And Call To Vigilance The genocide of Armenian Christians almost exactly 100 years ago provides a graphic reminder of evil and a call to vigilance, since Christians across the Middle East still suffer persecution, an expert on the atrocity told Dallas Baptist University audiences, the Baptist Standard reports. Artyom Tonoyan, the grandson of Armenian Genocide survivors, described the massacre of his people and current implications during the annual T.B. Maston Lectures at DBU earlier this week. Armenians, who populated part of modern Turkey, originated as a political entity between 3,000 and 4,000 years ago, noted Tonoyan, a lecturer at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities’ Institute for Global Studies and a research associate at East View Information Services in Minneapolis. He is a graduate of DBU and Baylor University.

A Beautiful Mind: A Powerful Interview With Seeroon Yeretzian By: Christine Soussa Edited By: Meleeneh DerHartunian Q: How did your parents influence your art? Seeroon: I grew up in a poor refugee camp, which was completely composed of deported Armenians who were Genocide survivors. Every day I used to listen to them recount their sad, heart-wrenching experiences. My father, at age 6, crossed the Syrian Desert. He stayed alive by eating undigested seeds from horse waste and drinking horse urine instead of water. He had learned to play music and to write in the orphanages where he grew up. The sounds of his music were the only refuge we had in the refugee camp. Our house was built with discarded musical instrument parts, from pianos and drums, etc. He was the sculptor of our valuable “Paradise Lost.” Each year he taught me different instruments, and our house was a museum of instruments. We were allowed to draw and paint on the walls, anything we wanted. In that environment, my mother and father turned our shack into a valuable institution with music, art, fashion, weaving, knitting, writing, and poetry. That poor environment was my rich base of knowledge where I learned of life’s mystery and mythology. I was taught about value and wisdom early in life. My father spoke with me about sex education at age 16. He used to tell me how to use each organ of my body from my brain to my sex organs (a taboo topic at the time). My life knowledge and philosophy came from my parents. Q2: Where do you get your inspiration from? Seeroon: I get my inspiration from my surroundings. My personal “Once Upon a Time” life, (before being diagnosed with ALS) and from my ancestors that blend together Christian and Pagan images beautifully. Fused together, I enjoy revealing the beauty that comes with combining religion and evolution, elements of water, land, and sky. As an artist, I went back in time. By researching our ancestors Petroglyphs (rock and carvings) and by bringing them to life, giving them color, movement, and music through my paintings, I began to almost get in character, wondering what circumstances they were painted in. Surely they weren’t in an art gallery painting like I was with tubs of paint and lush paint brushes. I wondered if they ever thought that their artwork would have such an impact, and that one day years later a woman named Seeroon would bring their creations back to life in the 20th and 21st century from a modern art gallery in Glendale, California, a country that didn’t exist at the time the artist were painting on rocks. Throughout my time as an artist, I have created 17 complete alphabets in the Armenian ornate initial style, inspired from my ancient and super-talented male Illuminator artists, by recreating and creating my own new ornate initials. All the initials
are composed with animals, birds, fish, “Humanimals” (a word I have coined), imaginary creatures, and trees in different forms. The most important images are the religious leaders and with any other type of male or female characters, sometimes merging or combining different creatures to create a single ornate letter. Q3: What words of wisdom can you offer our current Armenian generation? Seeroon: My advice to the new Armenian generation is: Get rid of your incurable “woundology” of the Armenian Genocide. Feeling victimized has not cured our scares for 100 years. Nowadays, I notice that the new generation is absent from reality because they are “Phoneaholics.” They use only one finger and eyes to watch other people’s achievements, and they find new ways to gossip about everyone and everything. By using Smartphones, the new generation is losing their smartness and turning into robots. They walk the streets without noticing their surroundings, only focusing their attention on a small screen. My message to the new generation is: Be in the present and don’t waste time because when you get older, you will meet the reality of time—life’s evaporation into the atmosphere. Don’t use only one finger on your smart phone, use all 10 fingers by learning any musical instrument that you love and create new musical instruments. Teach your children how to use them. Be witness to your time by watching around you. Write and document your surroundings and be present in the real life stories that you have the blessing to be a part of. Turn your life writings into movies and plays. CREATE! When I watch movies, I wait for the end to read the credits, and I am always proud to read Armenian names. I wish we had more Armenians involved in the art and film worlds. Be exemplary in your life and engage with your surroundings. BE present. BE aware. BE vigilant to your surroundings and BE face to face instead of being on Facebook. Q4: Do you have any words of wisdom to women specifically? Seeroon: My message to “Womanity” (a word I created) is… Now that we have achieved “equality,” we have to do the same achievements that men did. Do not rise on man-made, high stiletto shoes, which are dangerous and unhealthy, but rather, rise higher with your knowledge and skills. Be smart and creative; invent. Be visionaries, and look ahead of YOU. Don’t look at your life through a rear view mirror. Life on Earth is a mirage complete with repetition of happiness and loss. Be conscious of time. Turn with the wheels of time, and use and abuse every second of your life; it is YOURS. Don’t give any attention to “What will people say about you?” To be continued
Eurovision 2015: Armenia To Be Represented By Artists From All Five Continents Armenia has come up with a new and innovative idea for the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest: The country will be represented by artists from all five continents. The project will be called Genealogy, and they will sing Don’t Deny in Vienna, Eurovision’s official website rports. Peace, unity and tolerance – that will be the key message of the Armenian entry in the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest. Inspired by the symbol of a forget-me-not flower and of Building Bridges, the slogan of the
contest, a wholly new concept was born. Taking into account numerous requests of the Armenian diaspora, five musicians from Europe, Asia, America, Africa, and Australia, all of Armenian origin, will be part of the band Genealogy. The idea is to unite a new generation of Armenians on stage whose families once spread all over the world in the year 1915.
Thomas De Waal To Present New Book On Armenian Genocide Glendale, CA – Eminent scholar and reporter THOMAS DE WAAL will present his latest book, GREAT CATASTROPHE: Armenians and Turks in the Shadow of Genocide on MONDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 2015 at 7:30pm at ABRIL BOOKSTORE - 415 E. Broadway, Glendale, CA. Admission is free with reception to follow. GREAT CATASTROPHE looks at the aftermath and politics of the Armenian Genocide and tells the story of recent efforts by courageous Armenians, Kurds, and Turks to come to terms with the disaster. Here we are told the "history of the history" and the lesser-known story of what happened. De Waal relates how different generations tackled the issue of the "Great Catastrophe" from the 1920s until the failure of the Protocols signed by independent Armenia and Turkey in 2010. The devising of the word "genocide," the growth of modern identity politics, and the 50th anniversary of the massacres re-energized a new generation of Armenians. In Turkey the issue was initially forgotten, only to return to the political agenda in the context of the Cold War and an outbreak of Armenian terrorism. More recently, Turkey has started to confront its taboos. In an astonishing revival of oral history, the descendants of tens of thousands of "Islamized Armenians," who have been in the shadows since 1915, have begun to reemerge and reclaim their identities. Drawing on archival sources, reportage and moving personal stories, de Waal tells the full story of Armenian-Turkish relations since the Genocide in all its extraordinary twists and turns. He looks behind the propaganda to examine the realities of a terrible historical crime and the divisive "politics of genocide" it produced. The book throws light not only on our understanding of ArmenianTurkish relations but also of how mass atrocities and historical tragedies shape contemporary politics.THOMAS DE WAAL is a writer and scholar on the Caucasus and Black Sea region and currently Senior Associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. His the author of three books, including The Caucasus: An Introduction. Previously, de Waal worked as a newspaper and radio journalist in London and Moscow. Presented by Abril Bookstore
Sahag-Mesrob Students Receive Top Honor Awards At ACSI Spelling Bee Altadena, CA – On Friday, January 23, 2015, Sahag-Mesrob Armenian Christian School took part in the annual Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) Spelling Bee. Sixteen 1st-8th grade spellers attended the Spelling Bee held at South Hills Academy in West Covina. SahagMesrob students competed against top spellers from 12 Southland schools for a chance to win honors for being in the top four of their respective grade levels. The well-prepared group of Sahag-Mesrob students proved yet again that the school is a force to be reckoned with. Nine out of the 16 Sahag-Mesrob students received top honor ribbons for successfully placing in the top four. In all, three students received second place red ribbons, four students received third place white ribbons, and two students received fourth place yellow ribbons. Additionally, five top Sahag-Mesrob spellers from 5th-8th grade advanced to the final round of spelling in which 6th grader Heiko Abadjian was awarded the second place overall trophy. The accomplishments of all the spellers was highly praised by the school's principal, Mr. Hovsep Injejikian. "Sahag Mesrob has been participating in the ACSI Spelling Bee for many years. It is a tradition that the school takes very seriously. That our students did a good job is certainly an understatement. I commend all the participants and encourage them to continue to achieve excellence and to represent their school with pride. Lastly, this is a group effort in which teachers and parents work very hard to prepare the students during their free time. I'd like to thank them for their dedication and support, specially Mrs. Aylin Baharian, the Spelling Bee coordinator," said Mr. Injejikian.
