Armenia Warns Azerbaijan Over Fresh Karabakh Escalation
BY FLORENCE AVAKIAN
Armenian FM Speaks At UN Human Rights Council, Refers To Armenian Genocide, Kessab Armenia warned Azerbaijan of “severe consequences” on Monday after two Armenian soldiers were killed in NagornoKarabakh in what appears to be a renewed upsurge in fighting in the conflict zone. Karabakh’s Armenian-backed army said that the servicemen, Artak Aghekian and Hayk Baroyan, were shot dead on Saturday in an Azerbaijani armed incursion in northeastern Karabakh. It reported no other details of the incident.
Three Days, Three Deaths On Border: Stepped-up Aggressions Seen As “Baku Strategy”
On March 2, Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian participated and delivered speech at the discussions, titled “Supporting the Rights of Christians, particularly in the Middle East” held in the frameworks of 28th session of the UN Human Rights Council. Foreign Ministers of Russia, Armenia and Lebanon – Sergey Lavrov, Edward Nalbandian and Gebran Bassil respectively – delivered welcoming speeches. In his remarks, Edward Nalbandian mentioned, “The Middle East is a cradle of various civilizations and creeds, including the Christianity. Regrettably, today the survival of Christianity in these lands is under a serious threat. The alarming headlines about targeting the Christian minorities are disseminated with terrible frequency. Beheading of 21 Egyptian Copts and brutal attacks against Assyrians in Syria are only the
recent episodes of horrors faced by Christians in the Middle East. However, the persecution of Christianity in this region is not just a modern phenomenon. Suffice to say, that the percentage of Christians relative to the region’s overall population has gone from more than 20% at the beginning of the 20th century to less than 5 % in the beginning of the 21st century. The Middle East Christians may be regarded as one of the most vulnerable groups close to disappearance, hence requiring immediate actions for their protection and support.”
Mark Davis. 21 Banks Is Too Many For Armenia
Recent border tension which resulted in three fatalities was not unexpected, Armenia’s Minister of Defense says. It was, rather, part of a pattern of intensified aggression. The latest victim was 20-year-old Arsen Karapetyan, who was shot early Tuesday during heavy fire on a guard post that included large caliber weapons and rocket propelled grenades. Last Saturday (February 28), 36-yearold Artak Aghekyan and 20-year-old Hayk Baroyan were killed in an attack on a Karabakh military base in the north-eastern area of the self-declared republic. SOAD’s New Movie Dedicated To Armenian Genocide Centennial The System Of A Down has released a new video “Holy Mountains.” The movie directed by Arman Vardanyan is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide.
Banks.am exclusive interview with the Head of EBRD Yerevan Resident Office Mark Davis. -Mr. Davis, EBRD changed its September forecast (estimated at 3.5%) for Armenia’s 2015 economic growth and replaced it with a forecast of zero growth. What was it conditioned by and what new risks emerge for our economy? -It is true that currently we are forecasting zero percent GDP growth in Armenia
for 2015. At first it appears that EBRD is less optimistic than other forecasters, but I suspect that may just be a reflection of the timing of our forecast release. I would expect other agencies to also downgrade their forecasts over time, but let’s see. Armenia, as a small open economy, is subject to the regional economic challenges which it may face in 2015. But that said, its macro, monetary and fiscal framework is well-positioned to manage economic stress.

Eurovision Passions: Armenia Responds To Accusations Of “Politicizing” Its 2015 Entry Armenia has denied the political context of the nation’s entry in one of Europe’s biggest pop music contest in response to accusations made by Turkish and Azerbaijani media. The 2015 Eurovision Song Contest will take place in Vienna, Austria, on May 1923. Armenia will present an original project called Geneaology. It is a group of Diaspora Armenian singers representing five continents. They will be joined by a six member representing Armenia. The title of Armenia’s Eurovision song is also chosen “Don’t Deny”, but the lyrics have not been officially announced yet. Turkish fans recently started a petition on Change.org, demanding that Armenia be disqualified for the song title ostensibly constituting a message on the 1915 mass killings of Ottoman Armenians that Turkey denies amounted to genocide. At the same time Azerbaijan’s Public TV and Radio Broadcasting Company issued a statement saying: “This contest cannot be an arena for any country’s political ambitions. The Public Television and Radio Broadcasting Company states that if the news is confirmed, we will also take appropriate steps in the contest.” Satenik Tovmasyan

20 Years After The Ceasefire: Still Hoping For Peace Violence against the Armenian population in Azerbaijan SSR in the late 1980’s, the fight for Nagorno Karabakh’s independence and reunion with Armenia SSR lead to large-scale war by the early 1990’s. Armenia acted as the guarantor of Nagorno Karabakh‘s security and Armenian armed forces were able to liberate Nagorno Karabakh. In 1994 the cease-fire agreement was signed. But, de jure war was never over. Today, the consequences of unfinished war and ceasefire violations by Azerbaijan are especially evident in border villages. Here, for the last years, the gunshots almost never cease, formulating new rules for living. For over 20 years, villagers have been living like “hostages”, trapped between peace and war. Leaving a border village is like leaving a trench: almost impossible. Photos taken in border villages Chinari and Nerqin Karmiraghbyur in Tavush region, Armenia.
Jon Milano is a true product of the melting pot called America — an Oradell native of Italian and Greek descent now living in California and making a movie about the Armenian genocide. Director Jon Milano, a native of Oradell, talks on set with two actors in Turkish military uniforms. It makes more sense than you might think. "I am not Armenian," Milano says, "but I grew up in Oradell, which has one of the biggest Armenian populations in America. When I was growing up, at first I had no idea that was the case. Then when I went to public school, all my friends were Armenian. They have such a great history behind them." His movie, "Straw Dolls," has been a work-in-progress the past two years. Final photography was completed in November. The film is in its final phases of editing and is to premiere at a screening on March 15 in Los Angeles, with subsequent screenings on the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide on April 24 in Copenhagen, New York City and Armenia, according to Milano. !

Armenian Studies Program California State University, Fresno Kazan Visiting Professor Dr. Douzjian to Present Second Talk in Series on “The Armenian Genocide in Film: Theoretical and Comparative Perspectives” Dr. Myrna Douzjian (UCLA), the 11th Henry K. Khanzadian Kazan Visiting Professor of Armenian Studies at California State University, Fresno, will give a talk, “Atom Egoyan’s Ararat: Traumatic Histories and Transnational Identities” at 7:30PM on Thursday, March 19, in the University Business Center, Alice Peters Auditorium, Room 191, on the Fresno State campus. The lecture is the second in her series on “The Armenian Genocide in Film: Theoretical and Comparative Perspectives” in the Spring 2015 semester. Atom Egoyan’s Ararat depicts at least 13 distinct, yet interwoven stories, all of which relate to the Armenian Genocide. By presenting a non-linear layering of personal, familial, and communal narratives, the film self-reflexively rejects the possibility of making a film that simply depicts “what happened” during the Genocide. Dr. Douzjian will analyze the film demonstrating the relationship between the film’s cinematic approach to the Genocide and the empowering theory it presents on transnational identity. Lecture III in the series, on Wednesday, April 8, will be on “Reinventing the Genocide Documentary: Memories Without Borders and Solemnity.” Myrna Douzjian earned her Ph.D. in comparative literature from the University of California, Los Angeles. Her research interests include postmodernism; the Theater of the Absurd; critical approaches to the study of world literature; and post-Soviet Armenian and Russian cultural production. Her chapter on the politics of literary publication in twentieth-century Armenia appeared in the volume Armenian Philology in the Modern Era: From Manuscript to Digital Text (2014). The lectures is free and open to the public. Free parking is available, with a parking code available through the Armenian Studies Program office, after 7:00PM at Fresno State Lots P5 and P6, near the University Business Center. For more information about the lecture please contact the Armenian Studies Program at 278-2669, or visit our website at www.fresnostate.edu/armenianstudies.
Precious Armenian Gifts Genocide Centennial Gold Crosses Proceeds To Be Allocated To The Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute in Yerevan Las Vegas - What do you get when you combine the vision of two enterprising yet staunch Armenians, one coming from the high tech precision manufacturing world and the other from the high-end jewelry design scene? None other than old-world artisan processes and 3D laser printing to achieve the perfect Armenian cross. The endeavor to create a couple of perfect Armenian crosses was the catalyst that brought a new venture, known as Precious Armenian Gifts, to life. These crosses have been carved under magnification, then casted and re-casted -- almost deconstructed -- into individual units, a feat which has rarely, if ever, been done to an Armenian cross. Next, all of the assemblies are individually polished and laser welded with the highest attention to detail. During the ensuing months of 2015, the two creators will collaborate and release limited edition, wearable jewelry of very high quality, themed in a wide variety of Armenian subjects. Such diverse themes will include never-before-done, detailed profiles of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, General Vartan Mamigonian (Katch Vartan), and the Armenian Genocide Memorial (Dzidzernagapert), all of which will be transformed into wearable, high-end jewelry. Once the two creative perfectionists produce the perfect Armenian cross with an original floral center and a modern depiction of Mount Ararat on the rear side, they endeavor to take their project a step further. On a recent visit to Armenia, and as a result of the deep impression that the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute and Memorial Complex left on one of the creators, he returned to the United States with a vison to share the wearable cross as a way to raise global awareness of the genocide, while simultaneously allocating the proceeds of its sales to good use. Hence, Armenian Precious Gifts created a series of three different crosses from the platform of the original cross design, with a limited run of 100 units each, to pay homage to the centennial anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. Instead of the usual portrayal of Mount Ararat on the rear side, the new cross design adorns in the bold number “100.” Meanwhile, the front traditional floral center of the cross has a more valiant appearance compared to the originally created cross design. Most notably, each cross will incorporate gold, mined from the soil of the motherland, and specifically from the abundant Zod (or Sotk) gold deposit located in the Armenian province of Gegharkunik. The crosses will come in three combinations of Yerevan Yellow Gold, Spitak White Gold, and Armenian Tufa Rose Gold. All crosses will ship in a commemorative, ancient olive-wood gift box with a beautiful laser inscription. These crosses are an authentic work of art, and a great way to realize one’s mission of creating the perfect Armenian cross, while raising awareness of and contributing to a great cause. Turkish Intellectuals Who Have Recognized The Armenian Genocide
55 - !pek Çalı"lar By Hambersom Aghbashian !pek Çalı"lar (born in 1947 in Istanbul), is a Turkish prominent journalist and writer. After finishing her high school (Üsküdar American High School), she received her education at Ankara University, Faculty of Political Sciences. She lived in Hamburg-Germany, 1990-1992, where she researched about 'Homosexuality' and 'women and Islam ' issues. In 2003 she visited Iran with her husband where they met Iranian intellectuals and wrote their book "Iran: A Man Dictatorship" in 2004. !pek Çalı"lar has worked at the Turkish Cumhuriyet daily for 12 years and served at the Association for Education and Supporting Women Candidates (KA-DER), which defends equal representation of women and men in all fields of life, also at PEN Turkey. Her first literary book “Latife Hanım” has been translated into 11 languages, including Bulgarian, Arabic, German and Albanian. She wrote also "Halide Edip: Biography of Sigma Women (2008) ." (1)(2). Ipek Çalı"lar was tried for her bestselling biography of Atatürk’s first wife, Latife Hanim, under Article 5816 of the Penal Code for a passage that described the founder of the Turkish Republic escaping a life threatening situation in the guise of a woman and she was acquitted.(3) A group of Turkish intellectuals signed a petition against a Denialist Exhibit in Denmark, an exhibition which was planned by the Turkish embassy to support their point of view concerning the Armenian Genocide . " Don’t Stand Against Turkey’s Democratization and Confrontation with its History! " was the message to the Royal Library of Denmark who has given the Turkish government the opportunity to present an “alternative exhibit” in response to the Armenian Genocide exhibition. Ipek Çalı"lar was one of the Turkish intellectuals who signed the petition.(4) In December 2008, two hundred prominent Turkish intellectuals released an apology for the "great catastrophe of 1915". This was a clear reference to the Armenian Genocide, a term still too sensitive to use so openly. The signatories also announced a website related to this apology, and called on others to visit the site and sign the apology as well. The complete, brief text of the apology says " My conscience does not accept the insensitivity showed to and the de-
nial of the Great Catastrophe that the Ottoman Armenians were subjected to in 1915. I reject this injustice and for my share, I empathize with the feelings and pain of my Armenian brothers and sisters. I apologize to them." !pek Çalı"lar was one of the intellectual who signed the petition which in few days was signed by over 13,000 signatories.(5) According to setasarmenian. blogspot.com, under the title "24 April, the anniversary of the 1915s events, will be remembered this year in Turkey, too.", Taraf Newspaper of 20th April 2010 wrote " A group of intellectuals, among them Ali Bayramo#lu, Ferhat Kentel, Ne"e Düzel, Perihan Ma#den and Sırrı Süreyya Önder, for the first time in Turkey, will commemorate this year on 24 April as the anniversary of the events of 1915, under the leader-ship of “Say Stop!” group. The commemoration will start in front of the tram station in Taksim Square. The group will be dressing in black and carry photos of massacred Armenian intellectuals who were deported from that station." the following abstracts are from the text of the commemoration activity, “This pain is OUR pain. This mourning is for ALL of US. In 1915, when our population was just 13 million, 1,5 to 2 million Armenians were living in these lands.... In April 24, 1915 it was started "to send them". We lost them. They are no longer available. They have not even graves. But the “Great Pain” of the “Great Disaster” , with its utmost gravity EXISTS in our pain". The text was signed also by !pek Çalı"lar.(6)

The Symbolism Of Forget-me-nots
In Armenian “unmoroog”, in French “ne m’oubliez pas”, in English “forget-me-not”, the tiny flower, whose botanical name is ”Myosotis”, has been given similar names or their variations in many different languages. The flower , which is associated with steadfastness, loving remembrance and true love, has been chosen as a symbol of Commemoration of the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide, with the motto “ I Remember, I Demand”. We also learned that at the Ministry of Education and Science of Armenia, it was decided that Armenia’s 5th to 12th graders will prepare 1.5 million forget-me-nots to be presented to all guests, Armenians or foreigners, who will be visiting the Armenian Genocide Memorial on April 24, in Yerevan. The flower represents the graphic image of 12 stone slabs of the Memorial in Yerevan. The five-lobed blue flower has a yellow center that has a black core inside. The five petals symbolize the five con-
tinents of the world where Armenians were scattered after the Genocide and the creation of the Armenian Diaspora. The yellow center, suggesting the shiny sun and symbolizing brightness, optimism and hope, surrounds the black core, which stands for the dark, atrocious days of the Armenian Genocide. And the blue color of the petals conveys, like the sky, the sense of immensity, eternity and everlasting life. The forget-menot is one of the most interesting of minute flowers: small, beautiful, unpretending, and modest. Like the Armenian people, they are resilient, thriving in any setting; they can tolerate partial sun or shade, and they spread very quickly because of their root systems. These flowers have accumulated a good deal of legends over time. Many folkloric tales have stated that they had a curative effect on scorpion stings. They are said to be used as protective talismans against witches, or as lucky emblems or good luck charms. Teas made from dried forget-me-nots are said to be soothing on the nerves, promote better sleep, better skin and even weight loss. Also, the wearers of the flower would not be forgotten by their lovers. The symbolism of forget-me-not dates back to the 15th century. According to a medieval legend, a knight in heavy armor was walking along the bank of a river with his lover. The lady saw some flowers growing at the edge of the water and asked him to
pick them for her. As the knight stretched his hands for them, he slipped and fell into the river. Because of his heavy armor, he was unable to swim and was carried away downstream. As he was drowning, he threw the bunch of flowers to his loved one and shouted:”forget-me-not!” The maiden never forgot him and called the flower Forget-me-not in his memory. In a German legend, after the earth was created, God went to each plant and animal and gave each a name. As He finished and was getting ready to leave, He heard a little voice at His feet saying: “What about me?” The Almighty bent down and picked up the little plant that He had forgotten, and said: “Because I forgot you once, I shall never forget you again, and that shall be your name”. Thus, God Almighty gave us His promise and the assurance that this tiny flower, the symbol of our martyred nation, shall never be forgotten. As such, on this coming Memorial Day, it is our collective responsibility to reverentially reflect upon the magnitude of the sacrifices of our heroic forefathers, and collectively make a solemn pledge that we shall stay true, as our martyrs were true, that we shall be loyal, as our martyrs were loyal, to our religion, our language and culture, and commit ourselves to the protection, preservation, and prosperity of our most cherished homeland, Armenia. !
Study Grants Available For Armenian Genocide Centennial Commemoration In Istanbul Project 2015 welcomes applications from students seeking to participate in commemoration
Project 2015, United Statesbased non-profit group comprised of scholars, academics, activists, and writers of Armenian and Turkish descent, is offering grants of up to $750 to students wishing to participate in the Armenian genocide commemoration events planned in Istanbul in April 2015. The organization is working closely with Turkish civil society organizations to ensure that a large contingent of Armenians be present in Istanbul for the commemoration. Nicolas Tavitian, director of AGBU Europe, is on the board of the organization and has participated in Armenian genocide commemorations in Istanbul for the past two years. "We feel it is essential for Armenians to be in Turkey on the day of the centenary of the Armenian genocide. We will be
commemorating side by side with Turks who are ready for change. This is where it started; it will be so important to be here as well on April 24, 2015,” said Tavitian. Project 2015 encourages students of all disciplines to travel to Istanbul. “University students committed to the study of genocide and human rights are the future citizen leaders of their communities, so we want to facilitate their participation in the commemoration,” said Dr. Heghnar Watenpaugh, Project 2015 board member and professor at the University of California-Davis. Participants are expected to arrange credit from the universities and participate actively in the commemoration-related events, including a concert on April 22; various events around the city on
April 24, culminating with the commemoration at Taksim Square; and an academic conference on April 26 and 27 at Bilgi University in collaboration with the Richard Hovannisian Endowed Chair in Modern Armenian History at the University of California-Los Angeles between April 22 and April 27. To receive credit, participants will be required to submit a written assignment after their return. Students enrolled at the universities of any of the Project 2015 board members are asked to contact the board member for guidance in arranging academic credit. Students enrolled at other universities should identify the rules for their university’s independent study credit program and a faculty member willing to serve as a supervisor. They will also be expected to prepare a syllabus and study plan, a sample of which is available on the Project 2015 website. To apply for a study grant from Project 2015, please submit an application to armenianproject2015@gmail.com by March 1, 2015.
