Armenian, Russian Baku’s Non-Constructive Behavior Jeopardises FMs Discuss Karabakh Karabakh Talks: Armenian FM Armenian Foreign Conflict Settlement

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov discussed Friday, July 17, the settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on its website.

Also Friday, Lavrov referred to the issue during a meeting with the Azerbaijani Foreign Minister, Elmar Mammadyarov, emphasizing that it is high time to intensify efforts for settling the conflict.

"We'll be able to make progress in the near future,” Lavrov told Mammadyarov.

James Warlick Excited Over Yerevan Summer Evening

The US co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group James Warlick, having arrived in Yerevan, expressed a wish that all the people in the region deserve to live in peace.

Armenpress reports that Warlick made a corresponding note in his Twitter blog about it. “Such a beautiful summer evening in Yerevan! All people in the region deserve to live in peace and prosperity”, - stated the OSCE MG US co-chair, engaged in the settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict.

US Co-chair Of OSCE Minsk Group James Watlick: Then It’s On To Baku The Co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group are meeting in Vienna today, on July 21, to discuss the settlement of the Karabakh conflict, the U.S. Co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group James Warlick wrote on Twitter.

“Looking forward to briefing Minsk Group members at @OSCE today in #Vienna on #NKpeace and next steps in our mediation.

Then it's on to #Baku,” Mr Warlick tweeted.

Minister Edward Nalbandian received today OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs Igor Popov, James Warlick and Pierre Andrieu and the Personal Representative of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office Andrzej Kasprzyk.

The interlocutors continued the discussions on the process of peaceful settlement of the Karabakh conflict.

The Co-Chairs briefed Minister Nalbandian on the results of their meetings in Washington and Moscow and referred to their plans for the rest of the year.

Stressing that Baku has again resorted to military rhetoric and provocations after

the European games, Edward Nalbandian called the attention of the Co-Chairs to the recent ceasefire violations by the Azerbaijani side all along the line of contact with the Nagorno Karabakh.

According to Minister Nalbandian, Baku’s non-constructive behavior jeopardises the efforts of Armenia and the cochairing countries to further the negotiation process.

Uniting Church In Australia Recognizes Armenian Genocide

PanARMENIAN.Net - The Uniting Church in Australia (UCA) has formally acknowledged that the Armenian massacres and forced deportations constitute a Genocide. The UCA is the third denomination at a national level to acknowledge the Genocide that took place 100 years ago.

Statement By President Sargsyan On The Results Of Negotiations With President Of The European Council President Serzh Sargsyan received today the President of the European Council (EC), Donald Tusk, who has arrived in Armenia on a regional visit.

After bilateral negotiations, there took place a joint press conference of the RA president and the EC president during which Serzh Sargsyan and Donald Tusk delivered a press statement and responded to

questions from the journalists.

During the negotiations, the interlocutors touched upon RA-EU relations and their current cooperation, as well as the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process.

The parties also reflected upon regional issues. The Armenian president welcomed the agreement on the Iranian nuclear program.

Turkish Organization Threatens To Disturb The Annual Mass At Armenian St. Cross Church

An industrial conference at Armenia’s Ministry of Industry discussed main areas of industrial cooperation between the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) memberstates.

Talking to reporters, Armenia’s Deputy Minister of Economy Emil Tarasyan presented his idea of further cooperation in the context of a slump in exports from Armenia to the other EEU member-states, particularly Russia.

Six months is not a sufficient period to develop industrial capacities.

“Main areas and formats of cooperation are being discussed – Armenia can cooperate with the large-scale EEU industries,” Mr Tarasyan said.

The Turkish ASIMDER anti-Armenian organization intends to prevent the conduct of the annual liturgy at the Armenian St. Cross Church on Akhtamar Island in Lake Van, member of the organization Irfan Ermis has said.

Speaking about the reasons of the decision, Ermis noted that the Armenian authorities have not allowed them to perform namaz at the Blue Mosque in Yerevan, Ermenihaber.am reports, quoting the Turkish Milliyet daily.

Ermis said they will cooperate with local NGOs and the population of Van. He insisted that the St. Cross Church has been built by Christian Pecheneg Turks.

Rev. Dr. Chris walker, the National Consultant for Christian Unity and Worship, together with Mr. Levon Kardashian and the Rev. Dr. Krikor Youmshajekian, the previous minister of the Armenian Evangelical Uniting Church of Sydney and currently the minister of the St. Andrew’s Uniting Church of Longueville and the Chairperson of Sydney North Presbytery, prepared a proposal seeking the recognition of the Armenian Genocide by the Uniting Church in Australia.

“In the years of 1915-1918, the Armenian people were under the grip of annihilation and the brutal plans of genocide – but our gracious and loving God saved this first Christian nation from being wiped out," said Rev. Dr. Youmshajekian.

He also mentioned that many countries and many communities in Australia had been involved in providing support, relief, food, and safe places for the Armenian people to live.

“By accepting this proposal the assembly will keep the story of the first Christian nation alive,” he said, giving thanks to the many Uniting Church congregations who had held liturgies to commemorate the Genocide.

After the proposal was unanimously adopted, the President of the Assembly, Mr. Stuart McMillan, made a brief comment and asked all to stand for a minute of silence in commemoration of more the 1.5 million Armenians, who were the victims of the Genocide planed and implemented by the Ottoman Empire in the early 20th century.

By the request of Rev. Dr. Youmshajekian a prayer was offered by the NSW Moderator Rev. Dr. Myung Hwa Park, both sung and spoken in Korean and English.

PAN-ARMENIAN IDEOLOGY (PAI) 3. STRNGTHENING RELATIONS WITH NEIGHBORING COUNTRIES PAI advocates an Armenian foreign policy towards neighboring countries based on mutual respect for the sovereignty and self-determination of nations in the region, in addition to constructive dialogue without preconditions, which is paramount for the peaceful resolution of existing problems. Further, the development of bilateral ties based on mutually beneficial relations in the spheres of commerce, trade, transportation, energy, environment, and culture are goals which the Republic of Armenia and its neighbors can meet, if the political will to do so exists on both sides.

Armenia’s foreign and domestic policies should be based on self-reliance, serve its national interests, and prevent from potentially becoming subservient to the whims and interests of other nations. Unfortunately, as a land locked country, the Republic of Armenia does not have a direct maritime outlet, and therefore, must depend upon its neighbors for access to the sea, in order to conduct commerce and transfer goods and services. It was precisely for the aforementioned reasons that United States President Woodrow Wilson allocated sufficient land, as well as an outlet to the sea, in order to ensure that Armenia survives, protects its independence, and precludes potential aggression from her neighbors. In light of the abovementioned concerns, PAI advocates for the continued pursuit of the Armenian Cause, and concomitant justice for the Armenian people.

Unfortunately, to date, the Republic of Armenia’s genuine willingness to forge bilateral relations without preconditions with Turkey, and to a lesser extent with Azerbaijan, have been fruitless. By leveraging its substantial hydrocarbon revenues, Azerbaijan continues to brazenly acquire large quantities of modern weaponry for potential usage in a new war against the Republics of Armenia and Artsakh.

Turkey, on the other hand, continues to unabashedly deny the genocide of its Armenian minority in 1915, perpetrated by its predecessor Ottoman Turkish government. Considering the aforementioned factors, it is imperative that Armenia maintains a strong national army and develops additional deterrents, in order to discourage the resumption of hostilities on its borders.

Considering the past two decades of crude-driven, one-sided decisions by the international community in favor of Azerbaijan, and due to existing conditions on the ground, PAI fully supports the Republic of Artsakh’s independence and democratic form of government, as well as Artsakh’s jurisdiction over all liberated lands.

Merdinian School Begins Construction Of New Building

The C & E Merdinian Armenian Evangelical School held a groundbreaking ceremony at 4:00 p.m., on July 8th, to launch construction of the new Bezjian Family Building at its Sherman Oaks campus. This state-of-the-art 6,840 square foot structure replaces the old administration building. It features a library, science laboratory, art room, several classrooms and other facilities to serve the ongoing needs of the school’s growing student population.

The project was made possible through the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Albert and Terry Bezjian of Los Angeles, founders of Indo-European Foods of Glendale, who donated one million dollars to the C & E Merdinian Armenian Evangelical School of Sherman Oaks, California for this purpose.

The ceremony began with opening remarks by Dr. Vahe Nalbandian, Chairman of the Board of Directors, who wholeheartedly thanked Mr. & Mrs. Albert and Terry Bezjian for their support. Rev. Berdj Djam-

bazian, the newly appointed Minister to the Armenian Evangelical Union of North America (AEUNA), prayed for the Lord’s blessing for the project. Dr. Nazareth Darakjian, President of the Armenian Missionary Association of America, Inc. (AMAA), delivered an inspiring message about the importance of an Armenian Evangelical education and quoted from the book of Psalms that “Unless the Lord builds the house, in vain work the builders”. The ceremony concluded with a prayer by Rev. Ron Tovmassian, Moderator of the AEUNA, after which the attendees gathered in the Aram and Anahis D. Boolghoorjian Hall of the School for an informal reception to celebrate the event.

43rd Annual Brand National Exhibition Of Works On Paper, “BRAND 43” Glendale, CA- Brand Associates (the non-profit arm of the Brand Library & Art Center) are sponsoring their forty-third Brand National Exhibition of Works on Paper, “Brand 43”. The exhibition was juried by prominent, Los Angeles based muralist, Kent Twitchell. The exhibition taking place at the Brand Library & Arts Center (1601 West Mountain Street, Glendale, CA 91201) opens on Saturday September 26, 2015, with a public reception and awards ceremony from 7p.m. to 9p.m. The exhibition will be on view from September 26 through October 30, 2015 during normal Brand Library hours.

The call for submissions (for the first time disseminated via CAFÉ.com, a webbased service to manage artist applications) drew the largest national attention in its history with works of art submitted from thirty-three states. Out of 890 works submitted, 70 were selected to accommodate the Brand gallery’s limited space. Among the selected were Artists from sixteen states outside of California. Twitchell stated, “It was quite an experience to make the selection – and very, very hard not being able to accept so many worthy works of art”.

Twitchell and his murals were featured in the article “The City is His Canvas: Kent Twitchell gets a rare chance to restore key L.A. murals” (Los Angeles Times, July 5, 2015).

Twitchell is a grand scale muralist whose iconic works include The Harbor Freeway Overture, The Freeway Lady, recently remounted publicly, Michael Jackson, and freeway underpass monuments to artists Jim Morphesis and Lita Albuquerque, both of whom were past jurors of the Brand Works on Paper exhibition. Arlene Vidor, President of Brand Associates, states “Glendale is continuing to raise its profile as a player in the regional arts scene and public art is a huge part of the conversation. We thought this would be a great year to invite a juror who is truly a giant on the public art scene. Kent enthusiastically agreed to participate even though he is busy with many projects."

Join Birthright Armenia's Sister Organization AVC Offering A 'Birthright' Experience To All Generations The number of Armenians coming to their Hayrenik to implement projects and share their experience is growing. Meet three, Blanche, Tamar and Arshak, who recently volunteered in Armenia with Armenian Volunteer Corps (AVC).

Blanche Myriam Shahbaghlian, 64, is a Canadian citizen, currently living in the UK. Her field is counselling, psychology, body work. Blanche has worked in many places including Canada, Germany, Austria, the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, Israel and Egypt. She loves learning about various belief systems around the world and how they impact our lives. Short of actually living somewhere, Blanche is sure that volunteering is best way to immerse. "Above all, l want to contribute something useful to Armenia" said Blanche at the start of her experience.

April Tamar Arevian, 40, was born and raised in Los Angeles, but has considered herself more Armenian than

American. Tamar, who has lived in Barcelona for the last seven years, has always had the deepest desire to set foot in her own homeland - not so much to "see" it, but more to "FEEL" it. She didn't want to come as a tourist, but wanted to experience it by giving a piece of herself to her people, her land, while seeing and feeling it.

Arshak Karoglu, 39, was born in Paris, then, when he was 6, the family moved to Australia. Arshak has been to Armenia quite a few times and loves being here. He worked as a cabinet maker until he was 35; then he decided he wanted to make a career change into aerospace engineering. Making the transition from full-time tradesman in the construction industry to full-time university student is not something that everyone can do. It requires a very adaptable personality.

Birthright Armenia's sister organization Armenian Volunteer Corps (AVC) offers immersion, non-tourist experiences similar to those offered by Birthright Armenia (BR) to anyone who is not BR-eligible; i.e. to individuals of all backgrounds and ethnicities from across the globe, age 21 and up. Murat Morova (born in Istanbul in 1954) is a Turkish Artist. He graduated from the Department of Painting in the Faculty of Fine Arts of Marmara University in 1977. Morova participated in the group exhibition “Beyond Figure” at the BM Gallery in 1987 and a year later he had his first solo exhibition “A Season in Hell” at the Urart Art Gallery, which travelled to Ankara in 1989. Since then, he has had many exclusive solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions in many countries including Japan, Germany, France, Italy, Denmark, Greece and Argentina. In 2012, Morova exhibited his work in the exhibition “Journeys: Wanderings Through Contemporary Turkey” at the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris.(1) According to "http://www.theguardian.com", 7 December 2008, "Academics and writers in Turkey have risked a fierce official backlash by issuing a public apology for the alleged genocide suffered

by Armenians at the hands of Ottoman forces during the first world war.

Breaking one of Turkish society's biggest taboos, the apology comes in an open letter that invites Turks to sign an online petition supporting its sentiments. It reads: "My conscience does not accept the insensitivity showed to and the denial of the Great Catastrophe that the Ottoman Armenians were subjected to in 1915. I reject this injustice and for my share, I empathize with the feelings and pain of my Armenian brothers. I apologize to them." Murat Morova was one of the Turkish prominent intellectuals who signed the petition.(2) According to "Today's Zaman" (September 26, 2014) , "A group of academics, journalists, artists and intellectuals have released a statement condemning in the 'hatred and hostility' towards Armenians in Turkish schoolbooks, which were recently exposed by Agos and Taraf newspapers. A

letter accompanying the text of the condemnation, written by historian Taner Akçam, notes that including such expressions as lesson material to teach children is a disgrace. The statement said 'The revolutions history and history textbooks should be collected immediately, with an apology issued to everyone and particularly to Armenian students." The signees said textbooks in schools should seek to encourage feelings of peace, solidarity and living together over inciting hatred towards different religious and cultural groups. Murat Morova was one of the many most respected Turkish Human Rights activists who signed it.(3)

The Daily Beast: Karabakh Has Turned Into Surprising Democracy

In the decades since the post-Soviet war the Armenian diaspora in the West has helped turn Karabakh into a surprising democracy, journalist Anna Nemtsova writes in an article included in The Daily Beast.

Karabakh, according to Nemtsova, resembles other quasi-nations dotting the map of the former Soviet Union: Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Transnistria and more recently the embattled self-proclaimed states of Donetsk and Luhansk in Ukraine. “But where those have depended mainly on Russian backing, and critics would argue they are Russian creations, NagornoKarabakh has found other sponsors,” the author writes.

According to her, the enclave has support from a population of ethnic Armenians around the world.

Karabakh government is “more at ease and more fair to its people than Armenia itself,” she writes. Thus, to prevent traumatizing revolutions, Stepanakert made elections transparent and honest. “Besides, the state is so tiny that it seems everyone knows everyone, and local officials are just too exposed to cheat the voters,” the article reads.

Arayik Harutyunyan, the prime minister, is of the same opinion. He told The Daily Beast that that with transparent and democratic presidential elections it could beat corruption and organized crime successfully.

This is, according to the journalist, exactly what attracts certain businessmen, who come to live and work here. “Democracy is not the only goal for NagornoKarabakh. Very soon, Harutyunyan promised, Karabakh would turn into a black caviar heaven, to demonstrate to Azerbaijan that they not only despise dictatorship, they can also grow rich,” she writes.

And yet any conversation on the street or in private homes slowly drifts back to memories of war, and to stories of today’s losses on the border.

AGBU New York Summer Internship Program Welcomes Interns From Around The World Interns gain professional experience and connect with their Armenian heritage

On June 15, AGBU welcomed 24 interns from around the world for the start of the 28th AGBU New York Summer Internship Program (NYSIP). As the first of the organization’s cadre of internship programs, NYSIP empowers young Armenians to achieve success by providing meaningful, purpose-driven professional opportunities and social activities.

This year, interns arrived from Armenia, Lebanon, Syria, Turkey, the United Kingdom and across the United States to spend the summer building their brand, contributing to their professional development and enhancing their involvement in the Armenian community. During the eight-week program, participants work in various fields at prestigious companies and organizations, including Columbia Medical Center, the Permanent Mission of Armenia to the United Nations, AXA Advisors, Mirrorball, SnackBare.com and TheMedNet.org.

Artoun Festekjian, a rising senior at Tufts University studying cognitive brain science and drama, is spending the summer as a production intern at Locomotive Film, gaining insight into the inner-workings of a production studio: “On certain days, I get to read scripts and short stories, but by far, my favorite part of the internship has been going on set for a film that the company is currently working on. I got to meet the directors and actors and see the whole crew working, which was unbelievably exciting.”

The program also provides the interns with an array of social, cultural and educational events to help them make the most of their time in New York. Over the past three weeks, interns have visited New York neighborhoods and attractions and participated in discussions with Armenian professionals, including vascular surgeon Dr. Vicken Pamoukian and Serge Kassardjian, head of media apps business development at Google Inc. “I loved that each speaker spoke so dearly about how they took part in an in-

ternship when they were my age. It shows how internships can open up so many great opportunities and help them get to where they are in their careers today. As a young person who is also very ambitious, this inspires and encourages me to get the most out of this internship and to use it as a building block for the next big step in my own career,” said Nicole Schembri, a recent graduate of Loughborough University in the United Kingdom.

Additionally, NYSIP focuses on civic engagement, building relationships and fostering ties within the Armenian community. Since 1999, NYSIP has partnered with the Young Professionals of Greater New York (YPGNY) group. The most significant component of this partnership is the mentoring program that pairs each intern with a young professional working in his or her field of interest. Mentors provide guidance and act as role models, meeting several times throughout the summer, in groups and individually, to discuss various topics relating to their fields of expertise.

At the midpoint of the program, interns have already learned about their new professional selves. Karlsen Termini, a rising junior at Santa Clara University, reflects on his own process of self-development: “This summer has given me a lot of time to see who I am professionally, personally and culturally. As I am surrounded by this wonderful community of like-minded Armenians, I am starting to see the values of integrity and ingenuity that has allowed our people to persevere and succeed in the new world that we are creating for ourselves.”

The New York Summer Internship Program was established in 1987 and boasts a growing network of nearly 900 alumni. For over 25 years, NYSIP has hosted interns from 21 countries in virtually every professional field and given highachieving university students valuable work experience to help them lay a solid foundation for their professional success. NYSIP is part of a network of AGBU internship programs, which includes locations in London and Yerevan.

AGBU Sydney Launches The Tamzara Armenian Folk Dance Group Professional dancer and choreographer Nazarena Anush Arabean leads group as artistic director On May 23, 2015, AGBU Sydney held the official launch of the Tamzara Armenian Folk Dance Group with an event at the AGBU Community Centre. The group, comprised of more than 30 members of the Sydney Armenian community, was formed with the goal of disseminating traditional folk dance in the Armenian diaspora and the wider Australian community and with the intent of deepening knowledge of and passion for Armenian culture among its members and audience.

“The aim of this newly formed dance group is to maintain the rich texture of Armenian cultural heritage and to ensure that it remains a shining example for future gen-

erations. We also welcome a wide range of participation in the group, ranging from creative and artistic collaborations to organizing events,” said Nazarena Anush Arabean, the group’s artistic director and choreographer.

Nazarena is a professional dancer and choreographer originally from Buenos Aires. She has danced as a soloist with a

range of artists including Ara Guevorgyan and the Kaiane Armenian Folk Dance Group in Buenos Aires. Nazarena came to Sydney from Argentina a year ago and began work on the new group with the support of the AGBU Sydney Youth Committee and the main AGBU committees.
