Paraguayan Senator Calls For Armenian Genocide Reparations

‘Erdogan Gaining More Power In Turkey Dangerous Internationally’ If the ruling AK party gives sweeping powers to Turkish President Erdogan the situation in the country might be close to civil war, and dangerous domestically and internationally, Ronald Suny, of the University of Michigan told RT. Turkish President Erdogan's ruling party [AKP] won a crucial election on Sunday, achieving 49.3 percent of the vote. RT: The Justice and Development Party (AKP) has regained its parliamentary majority with almost 50 percent of the vote. Are you surprised by the strength of its support? Ronald Suny: I’m a little bit surprised. Most of the polls said that it would be more or less a repeat of the June 7 election, in

which the HDP [Peoples’ Democratic Party], the pro-Kurdish party had gained enough votes that it stopped an Erdogan majority, and therefore prevented the creation of the presidential system… This whole crisis is somewhat artificially created by the President of Turkey precisely because he didn’t win that election on June 7; he didn’t form a coalition government in between and forced this further election. In the meantime of course what he did – was bomb the Kurds, start the war with the Kurds and create a level of violence that in fact may have turned many people over toward the government in order to enforce some kind of stability. !

Genocide 100: President Sargsyan Attends Church Cersemony In London Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan, who paid a working visit to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, participated on October 28 in a ceremony to commemorate the newly-canonized martyrs of the 1915 Armenian Genocide that took place at Westminster Abbey, reports the presidential press service. The ecumenical service was led by Bishop of London Richard Chartres and His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians. The ceremony was also attended by His Royal

Highness Prince Charles of Wales. In the year of the Armenian Genocide Centennial, the ecumenical prayer for the memory and immortal souls of the canonized Armenian Genocide victims also urged all people of good will, nations and peoples to join the prayer for justice and to speak out against the gravest crime against humanity, as well as to pray for the promotion and maintenance of peace in the world. During the service, sacred songs were performed by the choir of London’s St. Yeghiche Armenian Church.

Armenia MOD: We Would Like To See Minsk Group’s Targeted Assessments On Karabakh

Yerevan – We would like to see the OSCE Minsk Group’s targeted assessments regarding the Nagorno-Karabakh issue. The Minister of Defense of Armenia, Seyran Ohanyan, on Monday told the abovementioned to reporters in the parliament. As per the minister, over the course of all these years, the Minsk Group co-chairs’ work aimed at maintaining the ceasefire. “Nonetheless, the time and situations change, and it would be desirable that the assessments and statements be targeted,” Ohanyan said. “An assessment should be made on the actions of the party which is the violating party.”

First Look At Site Of Russian Jet Crash In Sinai Shattered debris and burned out parts of the plane – an RT crew has reached the site of the Russian jet crash in Sinai where experts from the Russian Emergency Ministry are working to recover the remains of the victims and to investigate the tragic accident. PanARMENIAN.Net - Paraguayan Senator Desiree Masi, who presented the project of the Armenian Genocide recognition in the Congress of Paraguay, said in an interview with Agencia Prensa Armenia that "this statement of the Paraguayan Parliament will lead to greater recognition and a rescue of the historical memory." "There was pressure, particularly for the term genocide," said Masi. According to Senator of the Democratic Progressive Party, "that term seems not only right, but just. It claims for all what meant the extermination of the Armenian people and the recognition of crimes against humanity, which means that at some point there must be some kind of reparation.

learning culture and to investing in the future of Armenian education. One of Ayb’s top priorities is the creation of high-quality educational environments, which serve effectively as model institutions and islands of learning and virtue, fostering systemic change by example. The Ayb School, opened in Yerevan in 2011, is the combination of the best practices and resources in contemporary education, with learning tools, methods and approaches suited to current needs and environments. Ayb views the creation and expansion of such schools as an important step towards the educational, cultural and spiritual development of the Armenian people, as well as a tool for shaping a new generation that will stay connected to their roots and foster responsibility for the future of the country.

AGBU Europe Co-Organizes Seminar That Joins The Armenian, Jewish And Roma Diasporas For A Discussion On European Heritage

On October 16 through 18, AGBU Europe co-organized a seminar entitled “Diasporas’ Heritage and Remembrance” that brought together 33 Armenian, Jewish and Roma academics and activists from AGBU Europe, the European Union of Jewish Students (EUJS) and Phiren Amenca. The seminar was the second in a series of events under the umbrella of the “A Europe of Diasporas” project, launched last June in Paris. A public conference, titled “Looking Back or Looking Forward?” provided an opportunity to draw a wider public into the conversation on Europe’s diasporas. The conference was hosted by the Roma Access program of the Central European University during which speakers from the Armenian, Jewish and Roma communities shared their vision for preserving their heritage and popularizing it in Europe. “Heritage is wealth and is transferred to you if you accept to receive it. That heritage is a ring in a chain. If it breaks, then the rest may disappear. I think every generation is a part of that ring that needs to maintain and transfer that wealth,” said Yervant Zorian, AGBU Central Board member and the founder of Armenian Virtual College. “You should share who you are, you should share your heritage, even if you have questions, even if you have doubts and insecurities as an Armenian, Jew or Roma. The doubts are also a part of the journey of who we are,” said Zsuzsa Fritz, the director of Balint Jewish Community House. A second conference, “Diasporas’ Heritage and Remembrance,” also created an opportunity to compare the challenges which the diasporas face in Europe. The issue of dispersion was recognized as a

common concern for all diasporas that challenges them to be organized and collaborate within the communities. Dispersion can result in a lack of recognition, misrepresentation and prejudices. A number of initiatives were identified to help promote the heritage of diasporas in Europe. The project plans to organise a cross-cultural exhibition to showcase their footprint across Europe. They also identified a need for education about diasporas in schools and intend to work on an educational package. As a contribution to the discussion several speakers were invited to speak about existing outstanding European projects. The European Jewish Heritage Route project creates Jewish itineraries in European countries to introduce the cultural and physical inheritance of Jewish communities such as synagogues, houses, community centers and industries. AGBU Armenian Virtual College, the European Roma Institute and the Armenian pavilion at the 2015 Venice Biennale were other projects presented at the gathering. The seminar participants agreed to closely cooperate on remembrance issues and in organizing commemoration events. Roma Pride, which was held in Budapest on October 17, also provided an opportunity for members of each diaspora to express their solidarity with the Roma community. The next seminar, to be held in Sofia in January 2016, will bring together the participants in the “Europe of Diasporas” project on the subject of education and empowerment to discuss further steps and finalize the projects’ proposals to be presented at a European Conference in April 2016 in Brussels. !

Difficult Conversation About Overlapping Identities: ARAM, ARAM “Kids will find mentors; the question is who is that mentor and what road they will point to.” This was one of the many observations made during a panel discussion https://youtu.be/MnNiQJ0-mI8 now available on the USC Institute of Armenian Studies YouTube channel. Educators on the front lines, working with at risk Armenian children, were invited to comment on the content of ARAM, ARAM, a new feature length film in wide distribution, written and directed by Christopher Chambers. Following a screening of ARAM, ARAM on Sunday, October 18 at the Pacific Theatres at the Americana in Glendale, the public was invited to stay and hear Ara Arzumanian, Program Director, USC College Advising Corps, and Ara Mgrdichian, who has worked as advisor to students and teachers facing social challenges. Salpi Ghazarian, Director of the USC Institute of Armenian Studies led the conversation about identity, parental and family guidance, the need for belonging, general immigration woes, class and country of origin issues – all the aspects of the challenges that can lead young people to find answers in the world of organized crime. “Even one is too many to lose.” This was the afternoon’s theme as the panelists sought the complex answers to the multilayered questions that surround this issue.

How to avoid the gang trap? What is the missing piece that leads to the right path? What are the risks for girls versus guys? The panelists asserted that the more Armenians see themselves as other immigrant communities, the more they will understand that the issues are the same. Lessons can be learned from each other and answers shared. “An excellent film made it easy to talk about a difficult set of topics – subjects that we have mistakenly come to assume are far from our collective challenges,” said Ghazarian. The film ARAM, ARAM tells the story of a 12-year old boy of Armenian descent who is uprooted from his home in Bourj Hamoud, Lebanon and forced to immigrate to Los Angeles to live with his grandfather after the death of his parents in a car accident. His unexpected move to a foreign country and neighborhood, his lack of familiarity with the places, and lack of English knowledge push him towards a violent path. His circumstances and the pull from the familiar albeit violent world make gangs an obvious choice for him.

(1)(2) According to PanArmenian.net (April 1, 2010), "Some representatives of Turkish intelligentsia urge Turkey, which seeks EU membership, to follow the Serbian parliament’s example, which condemned the 1995 killings of Bosnian Muslims in Srebrenica, and apologize to Armenians for the 1915 Genocide. The offer was advanced by Maya Arakon, assistant professor of International Relations from Yeditepe Uni-

versity, and Soli Özel, professor of International Relations and Political Science at Istanbul's Bilgi University. (3) According to "Today's Zaman", September 26, 2014, "A group of academics, journalists, artists and intellectuals have released a statement condemning in the harshest terms what they define as expressions that include 'open hatred and hostility' towards Armenians in Turkish schoolbooks. A letter accompany- ing the text of the condemnation, written by historian Taner Akçam, notes that including such expressions as lesson material to teach children is a disgrace. The statement said 'The revolutions history and history textbooks should be collected immediately, with an apology issued to everyone and particularly to Armenian students." The signees said textbooks in schools should seek to encourage feelings of peace, solidarity and living together over inciting hatred towards different religious and cultural groups. Professor Soli Özel was one of the many most respected Turkish politicians who signed it. On The Trails Of My Musa Dagh Ancestry Dr. Vahram Shemmassian professor and director of the Armenian Studies program in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures at the California State University California Northridge (CSUN). This presentation recounts Dr. Vahram Shemmassian’s rendezvous with the history of Armenian Musa Dagh, his ancestors’ birthplace. The Odyssey began during the early stages of the civil war in Lebanon (1975-1990), when life seemed to stand still and required re-ignition. Idle wanderings in Anjar, Lebanon, where his family had taken refuge, came to an end with the discovery of the umbilical cord tied to the missing Homeland and its people. The young graduate student embarked on his mission cautiously but surely, navigating through uncharted archival domains, reviewing numerous periodicals and newspapers, interviewing and corresponding with natives, visiting homes across conti-

nents in search of family papers, soliciting vintage photographs, and in the process making friends and finding himself in anecdotal situations. All this resulted in a doctoral dissertation, articles in scholarly journals, conference talks, Power-Point presentations, exhibits, interviews, and so on. It also led to the publication of a new book, whose cover is featured herein. Vahram Shemmassian hold PH.D. in History from University of California Los Angeles (1996). He is the professor and Director of Armenian Studies Program in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures at the California State University, Northridge. Prof. Shemmassian has conducted extensive research

in the governmental archives in the United States, Europe, the Middle East, and Armenia, gathering data on such areas of interest as the Armenians of Musa Dagh and the Sanjak of Alexandretta, as well as Armenian Genocide survivors in the Middle East after WWI. He has published many scholarly articles in refereed journals and chapters in books. He has delivered numerous public and keynote speeches, and has participated in and /or international conferences. There will be book signing and reception following the lecture. Sunday November 15, 4:00 PM Ararat-Eskijian Museum/Sheen Memorial Chapel 15105 Mission Hills Road, Mission Hills, Calif. 91345
