A PUBLICATION OF ARMENIAN DEMOCRATIC LIBERAL PARTY, WESTERN DISTRICT COMMITTEE OF THE UNITED STATES

ARMENIAN DEMOCRATIC LIBERAL PARTY REPRESENTATIVES MEET WITH US AMBASSADOR TO ARMENIA, RICHARD M. MILLS, JR. Representatives of the Armenian Democratic Liberal Party’s Western District Committee met with US Ambassador to Armenia Richard M. Mills, Jr., on Friday, March 11, 2016 at the Brand Library in Glendale. Dr. Raffi Balian, Chairman of the Committee, briefed Ambassador Mills on the mission of the ADLP which has always been to help protect and propagate democratic rules and principles which would facilitate democratization of the regime in Armenia. He also highlighted the party’s ninety-five year history and shared some of the ADLP’s major contributions in the Homeland and the diaspora. The need for immediate action to minimize both corruption and the unprecedented wave of emigration from Armenia as well as bringing a positive change in the judicial and justice system were emphasized. He stressed that strengthening the Armenia-Diaspora relations and building promising economic, political and social bridges should be of utmost importance and part of the agenda of every Armenian organization around the world. The ADLP Delegation thanked Ambassador Mills for his strong support of democratic rules and for the enormous aide of the United States to promote economic, judicial and social reforms in Armenia as well as advocating a peaceful resolution to the Artsakh- Azerbaijan conflict.

A Big Night For Clinton As She Wins Ohio, Florida And North Carolina Americans in five big states voted Tuesday to pick presidential candidates, with Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton scoring crucial wins as Donald Trump failed to fight off Republican rival John Kasich in Ohio. Tuesday was always supposed to be one of the most important nights in the Democratic presidential primary race, but for Hillary Clinton, it was even bigger than she and her team expected. Clinton’s victories in Ohio, Florida and North Carolina put her firmly on course to defeat her primary rival, Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont. As the results were announced on Tuesday evening, she took the stage before a boisterous crowd of supporters here and seemed to pivot towards the

Republican frontrunner, Donald Trump, who also won in Florida. “We are moving closer to securing the Democratic Party nomination and winning this election in November!” Clinton declared. Main developments: -Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton is projected to have won Florida, North Carolina and Ohio. -Republican frontrunner Donald Trump is projected to have won Florida, Illinois and North Carolina, but lost out in Ohio to John Kasich. -Republican Marco Rubio has dropped out of the race after losing in his home state, Florida. !

Cypriot President Warns He Won’t Lift Veto On Turkey’s EU Talks The President of Cyprus on Tuesday, March 15, warned he will not lift his veto on Turkish negotiations to eventually join the European Union, throwing a new complication into European efforts to strike a deal with Ankara described as crucial to ending the migration crisis, the Wall Street Journal reports Turkey has agreed to the outline of a deal to take back migrants who reach Greece in return for several concessions from the EU, including a demand to advance the country’s bid for accession to the bloc. But political and legal questions still threaten the accord. European Council chief Donald Tusk, who is brokering the deal, said during a visit to EU-member Cyprus that the goal is still

to reach a deal during a summit of leaders on Thursday and Friday. “But we are not there yet,” Tusk said at a news conference with Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades. Turkey wants to open up several policy areas for negotiation on its membership bid, but Anastasiades said his country will continue to block the opening of them until Ankara recognizes Cyprus as a sovereign country. “It is unwarranted, counterproductive and not to mention unacceptable to shift burden of responsibility for migration crisis on my shoulders or on the shoulders of the Republic of Cyprus,” Anastasiades said. Tusk is headed to Ankara for talks with the Turkish prime minister ahead of the summit.

Syria Conflict: Russia Forces Begin Withdrawal After Putin Surprise Move Russian forces are preparing to start leaving Syria after Monday's surprise withdrawal announcement by President Vladimir Putin. Defence Minister Sergey Shoigu gave the order to withdraw and aircraft are being loaded up for long-range flights back to Russia, the ministry said. Western officials cautiously welcomed the move, saying it could pressure Syria's government to engage in talks. Peace talks aimed at resolving the conflict are entering a second day. Meanwhile, a UN commission will present a report on war crimes in Syria later. The Russian force reduction was announced during a meeting between Mr Putin and his defence and foreign ministers. Russia is a key ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and his office sought to reject speculation there was a rift between the

two countries, saying the move was mutually agreed. The Russian air campaign started last September, tipping the balance in favour of the Syrian government and allowing it to recapture territory from rebels. No details were given on how many planes and troops would be withdrawn or a deadline for completing the pullout.

Myanmar Parliament Elects First Civilian President In Decades Myanmar's parliament has elected Htin Kyaw as the next president, the first civilian to lead the country after more than 50 years of military rule. Htin Kyaw is a close ally of Aung San Suu Kyi, whose National League for Democracy (NLD) party swept to victory in historic elections in November. He beat another NLD candidate and one put forward by the military. Ms Suu Kyi is barred from the post due to a constitutional clause, but has said she would be above the president. Htin Kyaw won with 360 of the 652 votes cast. In second place was military-nominated

Myint Swe, who received 213 votes, followed by the other NLD candidate, Henry Van Thio, who got 79 votes. They will serve as first vice-president and second vice-president respectively.

Islamic State Commander Omar Shishani Dead, Says Pentagon A senior commander of so-called Islamic State (IS) is dead, the Pentagon has confirmed. Defence officials said Omar Shishani died from injuries sustained in a recent US air strike in north-eastern Syria. Earlier reports had suggested Shishani, a Georgian whose real name was Tarkhan Batirashvili, may have survived the attack on a convoy. Several of his bodyguards were killed in the same bombing. The strike took place on 4 March near the north-eastern town of Shaddadi, where Shishani had reportedly been sent to bolster local IS forces. A Pentagon spokesman confirmed to the BBC that the latest assessment was that

"he is dead". On Sunday, monitoring group the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the IS leader had been "clinically dead" for several days. Last year, the US offered a $5m (£3.5m) reward for Shishani. It said he had held numerous senior military positions within the group, including "minister of war".

Dana Walrath will be speaking on April 4, 2016 Burbank Public library Award-winning author Dana Walrath, PhD, will be speaking on Monday, April 4, 2016. The event will be held at Buena Vista Library, 300 N. Buena Vista St., Burbank, CA 91505. Dr. Walrath’s latest book, Like Water on Stone (Delacorte/Random House, 2014), is a novel in verse about the Armenian genocide of 1915. This absorbing novel tells the story of three siblings who flee into the mountains, hiding by day and running by night when Ottoman pashas implement their plans to eliminate all Armenians. Lyrical language and musical threads wrap the description of the Armenian genocide in a note of magical realism with Ardziv, an

eagle, describing the young sibling’s escape. Dr. Walrath will speak about her experiences in Armenia as a Fulbright Scholar, her travels to Western Armenia in 1984, and how these journeys influenced “Like Water on Stone” and continue to affect her life. Blending an anthropological tool kit with excerpts from this novel, Dr. Walrath will explore why stories, especially stories about phenomena surrounded by denial, play a critical role in healing. Admission is free and open to the public. For additional information, please contact Buena Vista Branch Library at 818-238-5625. !

Armenian Woman Donates Stem Cells To Save Life Of Cancer Patient In Israel Stem cell harvesting procedure performed by Armenian Bone Marrow Donor Registry Los Angeles - Seven years ago, when Maria, a Yerevan resident, became a bone marrow stem cell donor with the Armenian Bone Marrow Donor Registry (ABMDR), she had no clue that someday she would actually be able to help save someone’s life. That opportunity presented itself on March 9. After Hadassah Medical Center’s Bone Marrow Transplant Department, in Jerusalem, contacted ABMDR for a matched-donor request, Maria, 36, was identified as a match for a cancer patient in Israel. As further tests confirmed Maria as a perfect match, Hadassah requested from ABMDR that her stem cells be harvested for a bone marrow transplant that could save the life of the Israeli patient. Maria’s stem cells were harvested at ABMDR’s Stem Cell Harvesting Center, in the Armenian capital. Once the painless, non-invasive harvesting procedure, performed by Dr. Andranik Mshetsyan, was completed, the donated stem cells were flown to Israel through a special courier. Maria has been an ABMDR bone marrow stem cell donor since 2009. She is a nurse and the mother of two children: Alex, 15; and Knarik, 18 months old. Present at Maria’s harvesting procedure were ABMDR Executive Director Dr. Sevak Avagyan and Medical Director Dr. Mihran Nazaretyan, as well as Dr. Bella Kocharian, former First Lady of Armenia. Dr. Kocharian became ABMDR’s very first registered bone marrow donor when the organization was established in 1999, and has served as its Honorary Chair ever since.

Maria donated stem cells for a life-saving transplantation in Israel “We Armenians are a Mediterranean people, and, as such, share our genes with peoples throughout the region, whether they be Jews, Greeks, Italians, or Ethiopians,” Dr. Avagyan said. “Today we are absolutely delighted that the life of a patient in Israel is poised to be saved through an Armenian bone marrow donor. Nothing can be more gratifying!” About the Armenian Bone Marrow Donor Registry: Established in 1999, ABMDR, a nonprofit organization, helps Armenians and non-Armenians worldwide survive life-threatening blood-related illnesses by recruiting and matching donors to those requiring bone marrow stem cell transplants. To date, the registry has recruited over 28,000 donors in 28 countries across four continents, identified over 3,500 patients, and facilitated 26 bone marrow transplants. Her shock and grief led her on a 25 year journey to

come to terms with her own tragic loss. With the presentation of her grandfather’s diaries, Dr. Aroian will discuss how generational trauma transfers to the newly born child. This impacts the child’s ability to function fully in the world

around them. Genocide becomes a type of blueprint for being Armenian. Trauma continues in the Armenian psyche and mental health which interrupts our full potential for happiness in our community, in our parenting, and in our mate selection. Dr. Aroian will present how Post traumatic

stress is handed down generation to generation disguised as pride, closeness, yet this defense is fear, grief, and anger hidden in our tradition. DR. Museum Of Lost Objects: The Armenian Church In Deir al-Zour By Kanishk Tharoor and Maryam Maruf, BBC News, 10 March 2016 Twenty-five years ago a new church was consecrated in the town of Deir al-Zour in eastern Syria, dedicated to the Armenians killed en masse in 1915. Ironically the building erected in memory of the victims of violence has now been destroyed by bombs. In the basement of the Armenian Martyrs' Memorial Church in Deir al-Zour lay a shrine - a sunken area filled with sand, and laid on top, a pile of human remains. "I was so shocked. I just stood and looked at the bones," says British-Armenian writer Nouritza Matossian, who visited the church in 2001. "Everybody was hushed, it was silent in there. We were all lost in our thoughts. It was really quite an isolated moment. It wasn't pulling at you to cry or weep. It was just very simple and dignified and noble." "I looked at this beautiful shrine and I thought, 'What an amazing idea to have taken this column which was like a tree, rooted in the ground, and take it right up through the body of the church, right up into the cupola and up into the sky,'" she says. It was not an old building - the Syrian government had approved its construction in the 1980s and it was consecrated in 1991 in memory of Armenians who died in 1915. Matossian's ancestors were among those caught up in the events a century ago. As the Ottoman Empire crumbled, hundreds of thousands of Armenians, mainly from eastern Anatolia, were rounded up and sent hundreds of miles away across the Syrian Desert. Some were forced to walk, while others were taken in trains and caravans to the city of Deir al-Zour. Matossian's grandfather, Hovhannes, had already left Antep - now Gaziantep in Turkey - after an outbreak of violence in 1910. Although he had moved to Cyprus, the rest of his family stayed behind and were eventually deported.

They were "driven across these deserts starving, without water, stripped naked, their clothes were torn off their backs everything was taken from them," says Matossian. "Deir al- Zour was the end of the road, it was the last Ottoman outpost into the desert in the eastern part of Syria," says Heghnar Watenpaugh, a Lebanese-Armenian historian at the University of California, Davis. "Beyond that there's really nothing, no settlements. "Very few people made it there, and once they made it they were killed outright, or just succumbed to disease and starvation." Armenians say 1.5 million people were systematically killed. Turkey maintains the number is closer to 300,000, and denies accusations of genocide, saying that many ethnic Turks also died during World War One. In the years that followed, Deir al-Zour became "a major pilgrimage site for Armenians," says Watenpaugh, and a shrine was finally built. But the Armenian Martyrs' Me-

morial Church stood for less than a quarter of a century before it was destroyed. In 2014, it was blown up during fighting between the so-called Islamic State group and the al-Qaedaaffiliated al-Nusra Front. The central church of the complex was almost completely demolished. "It's a very dark moment in our life, in our history. I never thought this could be repeated," says Matossian. Before the Syrian civil war, there were an estimated 100,000 ethnic Armenians in Syria - most of them descendants of those who survived the deportations. There were small communities in cities across the country but the majority, more than 60,000, settled in Aleppo. For many of them Aleppo "is like a sacred word, a magical incantation," says Watenpaugh. "All of our families went through Aleppo at some point during the deportations. For some, it was a place where salvation was possible, where you could bribe your way out of the deportation or find some way to escape." She says Armenian women were often taken by Bedouin families, sometimes willingly and sometimes by force. "They became part of extended Bedouin households and the concubines or wives of various Bedouin men. "Today, when Bedouin come to Aleppo on business and go to a store run by an Armenian they will often call the Armenians of Aleppo khalo - brother of my mother. That's because there is this very strong connection between the Bedouin who know that their mothers or grandmothers were Armenians." Nouritza Matossian's great-aunt was one of the Armenian women picked up by local Bedouin. Years later, she was spotted in Aleppo. "Our relations saw her in the bazaar, and they recognised her, they called out her name - Berjouhi," says Matossian. "She recognised them but there were

children with her, and she swept up her children and disappeared into the crowd. She was married or she was living with these people and she didn't want to leave her children behind. "Her face was covered in tattoos. In order to assimilate them, the Bedouin made them change their religion, and they tattooed their women - it was a sort of tribal thing." Deir al-Zour made a deep impression on Matossian and she returned to the city in 2007. At the shrine, she bought a small box as a memento. Inside is a tiny cross made of olive wood, two ears of wheat, two little candles, incense, and a tube of soil. "The priest told me that that is the earth of Deir al-Zour. Some people take earth from where they're born and they spread it on their grave when they die. This soil has that significance," she says. "I always keep this box within eyesight, on my desk. I never expected that one day I would be looking at this box and that church would be gone, destroyed. It's very hard to accept."

Turkish Intellectuals Who Have Recognized The Armenian Genocide

105 - Ahmet Enis Batur By Hambersom Aghbashian Ahmet Enis Batur (born 28 June 1952, Eski!ehir, Turkey) is a Turkish poet, essayist, novelist, and editor. Studied at St. Joseph High School (Istanbul), Middle East Technical University in Ankara, and Sorbonne University (Paris). His first writing was published in 1970, and published his first book in 1973. He served as the Head of Department of the Publication Section in the Turkish Ministry of Education between 1983 and 1984; as the General Publication Director for Milliyet Encyclopedia in 1986; and as the General Publication Director for Milliyet Periodic publications between 1987 and 1988. He then worked at Yapı Kredi Publications between 1988 and 2004. He also served as a broadcasting adviser of the TRT program “Okudukça” between 1994 and 1999. Batur is one of the founders of Açık Radio and prepared the program “"ifa, "ifre, De!ifre”. He has received many awards including Cemal Süreya, Altın Potakal, Sibilla Aleramo prizes, also awarded TDK prize for his essays. Enis Batur is one of the leading figures in con-

temporary Turkish literature with a large body of work, extending to over a hundred volumes. Some of his works have been translated into European languages including French, English and Italian. (1) Enis Batur was one of the Turkish Panel codes victims. On 23 December #stanbul Penal Court No. 2 acquitted Enis Batur, author of the novel "Apple" and the publisher #rfan Sancı from charges of having published against the general moral. On 16 July 2002 the defendants had been acquitted but the Court of Cassation had quashed the decision. (2) Enis Batur is one of the Turkish notable intellectuals who have signed the "I Apologize Campaign" which was an initiative launched in December 2008 in Turkey by numerous journalists, writers, politicians and professors and called through a form of a signature campaign for an apology for what they considered as the "Great Catastrophe that Ottoman Armenians were subjected to in 1915". The campaign was done mostly online. The message shown on the website which people had to sign stated "My conscience does not accept the insensitivity showed to and the denial of the Great Catastrophe that the Ottoman Arme-

nians were subjected to in 1915. I reject this injustice and for my share, I empathize with the feelings and pain of my Armenian brothers. I apologize to them." The campaign was signed by 5,000 people in the first 24 hours of its publication and 30,000 signatories by January 2009. The campaign, which some interpreted as in direct reference to the Armenian Genocide, created widespread outrage in Turkish society. On Dec. 20, 2008, Today's Zaman , Turkey, published a long article under the title (Joint committee of historians on Armenian debate) where it mentioned among other facts, the "apology" campaign, which has gathered support from many respected intellectuals, and the reactions to it have shown that there are disagreements not only between Turks and Armenians, but also among Turks concerning the incidents of 1915. There are distinguished figures both in the supporters and opponents of this campaign. If we have a sneak preview of more than 10,000 supporters: Ali Bayramoglu, Ihsan Dagi, Cengiz Candar, Atilla Eralp, Enis Batur, Omer Laciner, Omer Marda, Leyla Ipekci, Huseyin Hatemi, Oral Calislar, Hasan Cemal and the list goes on.

So many people cannot be just labeled as traitors or terrorists and ignored. A number of columnists who criticize the campaign's wording or timing refrain from being disrespectful towards these people. 16 Thursday« March 17, 2016 GenEd Reaches Scores Of CA Teachers At California Council For The Social Studies Costa Mesa, CA - The Genocide Education Project introduced its curriculum to scores of California Social Studies teachers at the March 4-6 conference of the California Council for the Social Studies (CCSS) at the Hilton Orange County. GenEd presented two teacher training workshops and an exhibit booth providing practical resources and advice to help teachers incorporate this subject into their coursework. The combined workshops attracted 60 high school social studies teachers. “I was gladdened to see so many teachers attend our workshops, visit our exhibit booth, and display a deep interest in and commitment to teaching this topic,“ said workshop leader, Sara Cohan. The workshops included “Ten Stages of Genocide,” covering the process of genocide, beginning with the stage of prejudice and concluding with extermination and denial, and using examples from the Armenian Genocide and others.

Cohan highlighted the possibility for communities to derail the process at each stage. In the workshop “The Armenian Genocide: A Centennial Perspective,” Cohan described how the first modern genocide was carried out and examined its lessons as an archetype of genocides in the 20th and 21st centuries. A CCSS conference sponsor, GenEd provided publicity about Armenian Genocide education in the conference program and in the complimentary tote bags provided to all conference attendees. Many requested additional materials to build their own curriculum. Cohan and GenEd board member, Roxanne Makasdjian, were joined by Orange County area GenEd volunteers, Lori Karaguezian and Taline Jermakian. In the weeks preceding the

conference, Karaguezian has reached out to more than 340 Orange County social studies teachers, familiarizing them with GenEd. “I’m happy to have the opportunity to work with GenEd here in Orange County,” said Karaguezian, who greeted dozens of conference attendees at the GenEd exhibit booth, offering step-by-step curriculum, books, videos, posters to fit each teachers’ specific needs. She said, “I feel that helping institutionalize Armenian Genocide education is one of the most valuable activities we can undertake as Armenian-Americans.” CCSS is the largest state professional social studies education organization for teachers, administrators, and curriculum specialists in California. Its annual conference attracts as many as 1000 attendees. !
