German Bundestag recognize the Armenian Genocide

US election 2016: Clinton hails 'milestone for women' Hillary Clinton: "Tonight's victory belongs to generations of women and men who struggled and sacrificed to make this moment possible"

The German Bundestag voted today to adopt a resolution on the genocide of Armenians and other Christian minorities. Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats and junior coalition partner Social Democrats, along with the opposition Greens, prepared the resolution entitled “Remembrance and commemoration of the genocide of Armenians and other Christian minorities in 1915 and 1916”, which also carries the word throughout the text. With the motion, the German Bundestag bows to the victims of forced displacement and massacre of the Armenians and other Christian minorities of the Ottoman Empire, which began over a century ago. It deplores the deeds of the former Young Turk government, the almost complete emanation of the Armenians and other Christian groups (especially Aramaic / Assyrian and Chaldean Christians) in the Ottoman Empire According to the resolution, the planned expulsion and extermination of more than a million Armenians by the Young Turk regime starting from April 24, 1915, is an example of mass killing, ethnic cleansing and, yes, genocide.”

The Bundestag also deplores the inglorious role of the German Reich, as military ally of the Ottoman Empire, and notes that despite the clear information also on the part of German diplomats and missionaries on organized expulsion and annihilation of Armenians, Germany did not try to stop this crime against humanity. The commemoration of the German Bundestag is also an expression of special respect for the most ancient Christian Nation on earth. The Bundestag is committed to special historical responsibility of Germany to supporting the Turks and Armenians, seeking ways of reconciliation. According to the bill, “an honest appraisal of history is the most important basis for reconciliation.’ The German Bundestag calls on the Federal Government, in the spirit of the debate of the German Bundestag of 24 April 2015 100th anniversary, to continue the a broad public discussion of the expulsion and almost complete annihilation of the Armenians in 1915-1916, to encourage the Turkish side to confront the past to create the necessary foundation for a reconciliation with the Armenian people.

AGBU Central Board Member Noubar Afeyan elected to MIT Board of Trustees On June 2, AGBU Central Board Member Noubar Afeyan was elected to the Board of Trustees of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Afeyan, along with the nine other term members elected this year, will serve for five years, effective July 1. He will add his expertise to the 76 distinguished leaders in education, science, engineering and industry already serving the MIT Board of Trustees. Afeyan, elected to the AGBU Central Board of Directors in 2012, earned his PhD in biochemical engineering from MIT, and has authored numerous scientific publications and patents. He is the founder and CEO of Flagship Ventures, a leading early-stage, life-science venture firm managing funds exceeding $1.4 billion. In his 30-year career, Afeyan has cofounded more than 38 life-science and technology startups, and is currently director or chair of several private and public company boards. Additionally, he co-founded the National Competitiveness Foundation of Armenia, the UWC Dilijan International School, the Noubar and Anna Afeyan Foundation, and the Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity. He also served as chair of the World Economic Forum's Global Agenda Council on Chemicals and Biotechnology and its Emerging Technologies Council. Hillary Clinton has thanked her supporters for helping her reach a historic moment for women - the US Democratic nomination for president. Earlier, Mrs Clinton won the Democratic primary in New Jersey, cementing her hold on her party's nomination. She went on to win California, South Dakota and New Mexico, while her rival Bernie Sanders found victory in the Montana and North Dakota caucuses. President Barack Obama called both Mrs Clinton and Mr Sanders on Tuesday,

according to the White House. He congratulated Mrs Clinton on "securing the delegates necessary to clinch the Democratic nomination for president". Mr Sanders will visit Mr Obama at the White House on Thursday, per Mr Sanders' request, according to the White House memo. They will discuss "the significant issues at stake in this election that matter most to America's working families".

UWC Dilijan School honors first graduates Dilijan, Armenia - On May 28, the international school UWC Dilijan held commencement ceremonies for the first graduating class of the school. In total, 95 students from 48 countries who were admitted in 2014 to the new school in the UWC network in Armenia bade farewells to the school and to the town of Dilijan, which for two years had been their home. “Two years ago when we had students' induction welcoming the class of 2016, I said to them, ‘it will go in a flash’. And here we are now meeting to send them on their way in friendship, joy and expectation,” said John Puddefoot, founding headmaster of UWC Dilijan school, at the opening of the commencement ceremony entitled ‘Beginnings’. Co-founder and Chair of the Board of Governors of UWC Dilijan school, Veronika Zonabend thanked the first graduating class, and their teachers, for energizing the school, for laying the foundation of its traditions, and for establishing a high level of education that earned the graduating students entry to the best universities in the world. “Ruben and I are delighted that our dream, which seemed an impossible task at the beginning, was brought to life thanks to our partners, people who felt as we did, putting their trust and support into the project. Through our combined strength, the first international school in the post-Soviet landscape has opened in Dilijan. The graduating students then presented sprouting pomegranate trees in glass containers to each of the UWC Dilijan donors, symbolizing their growth and development during their time at the school as well as their gratitude for the generous support that made a first-class education possible. 117 - Hamit Bozarslan By Hambersom Aghbashian Hamit Bozarslan (born in 1958, in Lice district of Diyarbakir Province in Turkey), is a Turkish Historian and political analyst specializing in the Middle East and the Kurdish problem in particular. Hamit Bozarslan has studied history and earned PhD from EHESS*( The currents of thought in the Ottoman Empire, 1908-1918, under the direction of François Ferret,1992) and Political Science (States and minorities in the Middle East. The regionalization of the Kurdish Question directed by Rémy Leveau, IEP Paris**, 1994). He was elected as a lecturer at EHESS in 1998, then in 2006, director of studies at the same institution. He co-directed with Daniel Rivet and JeanPhilippe Bras, the IISMM (Studies Institute Islam and Companies of the Muslim world) between 2002 and 2008. Hamit Bozarslan was research fellow at Marc Bloch Centre, Berlin (1995-1997) and "visiting fellow" at Princeton University (1998). Hamit Bozarslan is working currently on violence and minority nationalism in Turkey and the Middle East. A three-day academic conference titled “The Genocide of the Armenians of the Ottoman Empire in the Great War” kicked off on March 25, 2015, at the Great Amphitheater of La Sorbonne. Historians, researchers, political analysts, and journalists gathered to share their work and reflections on 100 years of research on the Armenian Genocide. The conference was organized by the International Scientific Council (CSI), with the support of “Mission 2015” of the Council of Armenian organizations of France (CCAF) and the Regional Council of Paris and surrounding areas. President Erdogan knows that visa-free travel for Turkey could solve his 'Kurdish problem' Europe’s growing Kurdish diaspora would be vastly increased if the crushed and war-suffering masses of Diyarbakir could find their way to Germany, Denmark and Sweden

By Robert Fisk Just why is the Sultan of Turkey so impatient to get hold of that visa-free EU travel for his people to visit Schengen Europe? If the EU doesn’t jump to it, he orated last week, the Turkish parliament would scupper the whole deal and – for this was the implication – let that army of Arab refugees set sail again across the Aegean for Greece. And where was the !3bn Turkey was promised? What few Europeans asked, however, was whether this travel stuff just might have something more to do with a particular group of Turkish people: the Kurds. The Europeans, who are engaged in a massive campaign of bribery to stop the hordes of Middle Eastern poor arriving in their lands, fluffed on about Erdogan’s desire to keep his vicious anti-terrorism laws. Angela Merkel, who drew up this awful deal to avoid a repeat of her finest hour last year, tut-tutted away in the background. But in the Arab world – from which so many of the teeming masses are coming – the great and the good have taken a rather more cynical view. Turkey: Erdogan cites Hitler's Germany as 'example' of presidential state Folk from several foreign ministries in the Middle East (the Syrians excluded, since they would have their own reasons for saying this) suspect that Sultan Erdogan is keener to clear up a little local problem, especially in the southeast of his country, by encouraging his 16 million Kurdish citizens to avail themselves of that precious visa-free EU travel. “Do you think Erdogan expects his people to flock to Europe because they want to go on a

shopping spree to Paris?” an Arab diplomat based in Beirut asked, in an unpleasant and ungenerous spirit. Of course, the Sultan wishes to join the EU, wants the initial !3bn payment, and intends to keep his growing dictatorial powers intact. And Turkish gastarbeiter have been in Europe for decades. But Schengen Europe’s growing Kurdish diaspora – it’s probably well over 1.5 million people – would be vastly increased if the crushed and war-suffering masses of Diyarbakir could find their way to Germany, Denmark and Sweden. To touch a live wire for a moment: the Ottoman Empire destroyed most of its Christian population in the 1915 Armenian genocide of a million and a half souls, and its Ataturk successors butchered more than 50,000 Kurds and Alevis between 1937 and 1938. Amid another war in Turkish Kurdistan, caused by our modern Sultan’s refusal to adhere to a ceasefire, there’s added incentive for another non-Turkic exodus. Welcome to the EU. Yes, this is meant to be just “visa-free travel”, but we all know what that means. And we would tolerate the arrival of even hundreds of thousands of Kurds in order to avoid another million gaunt faces at the border wire. Bingo. The Sultan reduces his Kurdish “problem” with EU generosity, and further ‘Turkifies’ his nation; and we still keep the hordes at bay. History, of course, plays strange tricks amid the embers that still smoulder from the old Ottoman Empire. Time was (about five years ago) when the bling-literati told us all that dem-

ocratic Recep Tayyip Erdogan was a role model for a future Arab leadership. The man who had turned his back on Ataturk, the previous role model for the poor old Arab world, may have been a bit of a Muslim Brotherhood fellow, but he believed in free elections, free press, market economy and massive anti-terror campaigns – the latter being an immediate winner in Washington, London and Paris – and other ‘soft targets’, provided it was smothered in a veneer of concern for human rights. But now the Sultan, in his 1000 room palace with his preposterous golden chairs of state (just look at how Merkel leaned forward uncomfortably on hers when she was conducting ‘Operation Bribery’), looks less of an Ottoman than an Ataturk, the man he was supposed to despise. He’s still going through the motions, reintroducing the Ottoman language – in Arabic script, though presumably many Ottoman archives on the Armenian genocide will remain closed – and encouraging ladies to wear the veil. But the Sultan is now begin-

ning to act more like the Father of His People. It’s instructive to remember that one nation in Europe had tremendous admiration for Ataturk and his new land: Nazi Germany. The Turkish Fuhrer was lauded in the Nazi press for obvious reasons. He had restored his nation after defeat by France and Germany in the First World War; he ruled a country freed (by the Ottomans) of a hated minority group; he ran a largely one-party system, ruthlessly suppressing opposition, and marginalised religion. Does that remind you of anyone? The ex-corporal chappie, perhaps? The one with the moustache? The most brilliant academic work on these distressing parallels is the scholar Stefan Ihrig (he would not agree with my conclusions), who has scrupulously unearthed heaps of Nazi German newspaper clippings in which Ataturk’s Turkey was virtually deified, its leader obviously carrying out “the will of the nation”. A purified Turkey mirrored back to Germany what the Nazis

wanted their own creation to become: a Teutonic, purified Germany. No wonder Hitler asked his generals before they set out on their genocidal campaign into 1939 Poland: “Who, after all, is today speaking of the destruction of the Armenians?” In reality, Ataturk was uninvolved in the Armenian genocide and loathed the Ottomans. But I’ve watched the newsreel film of Ataturk’s funeral and you can clearly see the Nazi German military and civilian dignitaries clustered around the front of the horse-drawn cortege. Volkischer Beobachter, the party newspaper, dripped obituaries of the great man. But who is Erdogan today, the man who restarted the Kurdish war and now wants his visa-free travel to Europe so quickly? Is he the Sultan in his palace, master of a great if imaginary empire? Or, as one Turkish journalist bravely put it, “Ataturk’s kid”? I’m not going to say a bit of both. I think Erdogan’s trying to combine the two. Father of the Nation and Cleanser of the Land, Father Figure of a purified Turkey and a Middle East Emperor whose voice, from the palace on the Sublime Porte, will thunder through the halls of Gulf potentates. And where is that EU visafree travel by the way? Come along now, cough it up, Angela. You may get a lot of Kurds in Berlin, but when you sign up for a Bribery Treaty you can’t complain about the uses to which the other side puts the deal. 100 years ago, Syrians took in Armenians. Now, Armenia is a refuge for this family to rebuild One month ago, one more Syrian restaurant opened, this one in Yerevan, Armenia. By Elizabeth MacBride “I love Armenia. It’s my job, I think, to love it. I want to live here. I don’t to go anywhere else,” said Shaghig Rastkelenian. She fled to Armenia about four years ago from Aleppo with her family. Her two sisters, and mother are working in the restaurant, which seats 35-40 and is called Zeituna. “My mom is professional cook. She cooks Arabic food and Syrian food, and everybody knows her,” said Rastkelenian. “We decided to go ahead, to make money, because nobody can live in a place without working.” As the Syrian refugee diaspora spreads across the world, one of the first signs of their integration into the communities where they land is turning out to be restaurants. Syrians are known throughout the Middle East for their craft skills, which include cooking. Syrian restaurants opening on Medina Street were an early effect of the refugee crisis in Amman. I’ve heard of a catering kitchen in Cairo, called Zeit Zeitoun, being run by Syrian refugee women, set up with the aid of the Syrian diaspora in Cairo. One

of the first stories I wrote about refugees in the Middle East almost two years ago was about a Syrian woman who was supporting her family by making the savory pastry kibbeh. There’s an upcoming discussion of the culinary as part of the Syrian identity. “I think for hard-working people they can find life where they want,” Rastkelenian said. “The only problem here is that you can do only small businesses. The economy is slow.” She estimated that you can open a small restaurant in Yerevan for about $10,000. Stories about the Syrian refugees in Armenia have particular resonance because of the history of connection between the two countries. One hundred years ago, during the Armenian genocide, Syria became a refuge for families that survived forced marches and mass violence in the desert between the two countries. Now that the tables are turned, Armenia is welcoming Syrian refugees: a population of about 17,000 has reportedly come to the country of about 3 million. Before the genocide, Aleppo had had an Armenian community dating to the Silk

Road that led from China to Venice and passed through both Syria and Armenia, according to lawyer Harout Ekmanian, a Syrian who worked for a few years in Armenia before moving to New York. When the genocide happened, the Armenians living in Aleppo led the humanitarian effort, and as a result, grew an even stronger community in the city, one that lasted and sustained its culture until now. Rastkelenian grew up speaking Armenian and attended an Armenian school. “They call Aleppo as the mother community of the whole Armenian diaspora,” he said. Despite Armenia’s high poverty rate — 30% — and its fairly slow growth, Syrian refugees by all accounts are finding a welcome in Armenia. Though they aren’t able to continue in their same lines of work or businesses — a shopkeeper in Aleppo might find a market stand in Yerevan — they are finding community and support. For instance, Rastkelenian said, Syrian Armenian students attend school for free. (She finished college in Armenia). Rastkelenian, 24, who also works as a

model, has also set up an Instagram and Facebook FB -12.65% campaign with two friends called LiveLoveArmenia, which sells bracelets emblazoned with the motto for about $4.
