Armenian FM Meets with Carnegie Endowment President

Slovakia Armenian Businessman Wants to “Revive” Yerevan Chemical Plant and Invest $20mn

In Yerevan on August 30, Armenian Minister of Foreign Affairs met with William Burns, president of the Carnegie Endowment for Peace, and Aso Tavitian, who sits on the Endowment’s Board of Trustees. According to a ministry press release, the three talked about prospects for Armenian-American cooperation and various regional and international issues. William Burns previously served as U.S. Deputy Secretary of State. Aso O. Tavitian, former chief executive officer of Syncsort and president of the Tavitian Foundation.

Ashot Grigoryan, head of the Armenian community of Slovakia, plans to invest $20 million to resume production at Nairit chemical rubber plant in Armenia’s capital city of Yerevan. Grigoryan himself told about the aforementioned to reporters at Tuesday’s videoconference. Ashot Grigoryan, who is also President of the EU-ASIA Business Finance Centre Holding, stated that company representatives wish to visit Yerevan on September 12 and 13, and then Nairit—to assess its condition. Karen Israyelyan, the plant’s former director, and Gagik Avetisyan, the head of Nairit’s rubber production facility, for their part, told reporters that Ashot Grigoryan, as a possible investor, has also reached an agreement on natural gas supplies to the plant from Iran, which provides acetylene—the rubber raw material—to Nairit.

South California University to Host Screening of Film about Armenia Genocide The University of South California (USC) will host the screening of the film The Other Side of Home, from Armenian filmmaker Naré Mkrtchyan. According to her, the film discloses “a universal story of identity, denial, and how the experience of genocide creates a ripple effect for future generations on both sides.” The film follows the story of a Turkish woman named Maya, who discovers that her great grandmother was a survivor of the Armenian Genocide. Two conflicting identities struggle in her: one that suffers and the other that denies the happening. The Other Side of Home is a documentary that tells about Maya’s trip to Armenia to take part in the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. Naré Mkrtchyan lives in Los Angeles, CA. She graduated from the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts.

Rosemarie Yaverian, Head of Branch Administration for Bank of New Jersey, becomes Armenia Fund USA’s new Treasurer Rosemarie Yaverian has worked within several Bergen County, NJ banking institutions since 1989 when she started her banking career as a Teller at Sovereign Bank. Quickly Rosemarie grew from Teller to Customer Service Manager due to her hard working ethics and commitment to her career. From there Rosemarie became the Vice President Bank Manager of both Interchange Bank and Bank of New Jersey where she managed the main offices along with many other daily tasks. Rosemarie’s career continued to grow as she soon became the Senior Vice President Branch Administrator within Bank of New Jersey in 2014. Besides Rosemarie’s continued growth within the banking industry she has also been an active member of the local Armenian Community. She has served as the Treasurer for the Armenian International Women’s Association, NJ Affiliate since 2007. Rosemarie holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Rosemarie states that, “in joining Armenia Fund USA, I am honored to be a member of an organization, which works to strengthen the infrastructure and humanitarian needs, in both the Republic of Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh. Trailer of “Caravan 1915” is Now on Internet The trailer of Caravan 1915, which denies the Armenian Genocide and presents the 1915s as a general tragedy, has appears on the web. Ismail Gunes, the Turkish director who shot the movie, noted that his movie does not try to show if there took place a genocide or not, but rather tells a story about a coachman who was commissioned to move 200 Armenians to Aleppo, who were living in Giresun. The coachman "devotedly" defends the Armenians "entrusted " to him from the attacks of bandits. He said, that the heroes of the movie become witnesses of massacre at different places on their way from Giresun to Aleppo. Caravan 1915 will go on the movie theaters in Turkey on October 7. Among others, an Armenian actress Rosa Hovhannisyan stars the movie. Suren Asatryan is the director of music.

Armenia 20th Safest Country Globally, Study Finds PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenia was listed among countries with a low crime level and, correspondingly, a high safety level in the 2016 mid-year Crime Index for Country compiled by Numbeo, the world's largest database of user-generated content. To present survey results, Numbeo uses the scale 0-100. Crime Index is an estimation of overall level of crime in a given city or a country. Numbeo considers crime levels lower than 20 as very low, crime levels between 20 and 40 as being low, crime levels between 40 and 60 as being moderate, crime levels between 60 and 80 as being high and finally crime levels higher than 80 as being very high. Safety index is, on the other way, quite opposite of crime index. If the city has a high safety index, it is considered very safe. In particular, Armenia’s crime and safety indices stand at 29.02 and 70.98, respectively, placing the country in the 20th spot on a list of 118 countries worldwide. The country ranked the 16th in the same report a year earlier, and came in 33rd in the 2014 mid-year data. Neighboring Georgia is the third safest country in the world, Azerbaijan ranks the 24th, Turkey and Iran follow in the 44th and 81st spots, respectively, while Russia is the 69th globally. Also among the top five safest countries are South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and Japan, while Venezuela, Papua New Guinea, Honduras, South Sudan and South Africa have the highest crime rates in the world. Interestingly, Armenia’s capital city, Yerevan with a safety index of 69.42, ranks the 30th among 141 cities around the globe. Based on the cost of living index, Yerevan is the 15th in the list, while the purchasing power index tells a whole different story, putting the city fifth to last.

Dr. Khatchig Mouradian Appointed as 13th Kazan Visiting Professor in Armenian Studies at Fresno State Dr. Khatchig Mouradian (Clark University), the newly appointed 13th Henry K. Khanzadian Kazan Visiting Professor of Armenian Studies at California State University, Fresno, will give three public lectures on the general theme of “Genocide and Resilience” in the Spring 2016 semester. The first lecture in the series, “Genocide and Humanitarian Resistance in Ottoman Syria, 1915-1917” will take place at 7:30PM on Tuesday, September 20, in the University Business Center, Alice Peters Auditorium, Room 191, on the Fresno State campus. Book Review: Perspectives from Exile by Lucine Kasbarian By PETER MUSURLIAN It is hard to imagine a comfortable mix of cartoons and genocide, but artist and author Lucine Kasbarian has done just that in her new book. Perspectives from Exile is a hundred pages you can breeze through in a day of focused reading, but it will leave you thinking for weeks to come. The book showcases the exceptional political cartoons of the author. The artwork is good and serves its purpose. But, much more important is the long-time activist’s point-ofview, enhanced by keen observational skills and a lifetime of experience reading, writing, thinking about, and participating-in Armenian issues. Not many Armenian-Americans could do what Kasbarian has done. In fact, one might suggest no other ArmenianAmerican could combine such concise and profound opinions, in this genre, on such topics as: Hrant Dink, the Armenian Genocide, Turkish hypocrisy, corruption in Armenia, and assimilation in the diaspora. Each cartoon leaves the reader thinking. Perhaps Kasbarian’s pointed perspectives leave some of them righteously indignant

and others amused, but always intellectually stimulated. The political cartoons were part of a 2015 Massachusetts exhibition commemorating the Armenian Genocide Centenary at the Cambridge School of Weston. Conceptualized and edited by Todd Bartel, director of the Thompson Gallery at the Cambridge School, the book also contains pictures from the exhibit, an insightful interview with Bartel and the author, and a gripping account (and update) of a trip she took to Der Zor in 2010, which she calls, “A Pilgrimage to the Killing Fields of the Armenian Genocide.” Perspectives from Exile should be in every Armenian-American school library and taught in social studies classes in each one of those schools. What Kasbarian has done is unique and a major contribution to understanding the relationship between Armenians, Turks, and America, in the context of the Armenian Genocide over the past 100 years of denial, propaganda, and moral failure. 126 - Tarık Ziya Ekinci By Hambersom Aghbashian Dr. Tarik Ziya Ekinci (born in 1925 in Diyarbakir- Turkey) is a Turkish physician, politician and writer of Kurdish descent. He is a graduate of the Medical School of Istanbul University. He also studied medicine in Paris and specializes in Internal Medicine. He worked at the Malaria Medical Office in Siverek, a town and district in the south-east of Turkey, in !anlıurfa province, and was the Chief of Medical Staff in Lice, a small city in Diyarbakir. He is the president of the Red Crescent chamber in Diyarbakir, Mardin and Siirt and the Tuberculosis Control Association Board. Dr. Tarik Ziya Ekinci is a member of the Socialist Cultural Association and the founder and the manager of Free Doctors. He served as PM representing Diyarbakir. He was detained for alleged propaganda of defending the Kurdish nationality and was sentenced to three years imprisonment, spending two years in detention. He is married and has two children. Dr. Tarik Ziya Ekinci is one of the Turkish intellectuals and politicians who, in December 2008, along with 200 prominent Turkish intellectuals released an apology for the "great catastrophe of 1915". This was a clear reference to the Armenian Genocide, a term which is still too sensitive to use so openly. The signatories also announced a

website related to this apology, and called on others to visit the site and sign the apology as well. The brief text of the apology was: "My conscience does not accept the insensitivity showed to and the denial of the Great Catastrophe that the Ottoman Armenians were subjected to in 1915. I reject this injustice and for my share, I empathize with the feelings and pain of my Armenian brothers and sisters. I apologize to them." A few days after the site went up, it had reached over 13,000 signatories. Germany's Minister of State for Europe Michael Roth Ottoman forces as a "genocide", has denied German lawmakers access to the base near the Syrian frontier. Six German surveillance jets and a refueling tanker are using it to support the U.S.-led coalition's strikes on Islamic State. Some German lawmakers have threatened to end the mission unless Ankara allows them to visit. "It depends on the steps taken by Germany. If they take the necessary steps we will enable this visit," Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu told a news conference in Ankara, when asked about allowing the German lawmakers access to the base. "But unfortunately I have to say that those that mingle and manipulate our history in an unfair manner cannot be allowed on this visit," he said, in reference to the Armenian resolution. Foreign ministry officials said "necessary steps" meant the German government distancing itself from the parliamentary resolution and making clear it did not support it. The German foreign ministry declined comment on Ankara's latest statement. It said spokesman Martin Schaefer had addressed the issue on Friday when he was asked whether the German government could distance itself from the resolution passed by the parliament. "A resolution of the German Bundestag is a political declaration of a German constitutional body," Schaefer told reporters. "I believe it is a very good idea ... that constitutional entities only comment on each other's work very carefully, if at all." Germany's European Affairs Minister Michael Roth, who just returned to Germany from a visit to Ankara, earlier told broadcaster Suedwestrundfunk that the two countries had made progress in resolving the dispute over Incirlik. "I have the impression that there is great movement here," Roth said. "I hope and wish that parliamentarians from our Bundestag will soon be able to visit our soldiers." Land and Culture Organization Completes 20th Project in Armenia Pasadena, CA - Summer 2016 marked another successful campaign for the Land and Culture Organization (LCO)/Organisation Terre et Culture (OTC). After three summer campaigns of volunteers, and four years of historical archaeologists, local workers and artisans, LCO/OTC celebrated the completion and consecration of the its fifth historical restoration project 16th century Sourp S t e p a n o s Nakhavegah (St. Stephen the Protomartyr) church in the village of Shikaghogh. Shikahogh is located in the southern Syunik region, adjacent to the Shikahogh Forest Reserve 20 miles south of Kapan. Being near the Armenian-Artsakh border, the Azeris shelled Shikahogh during the Karabagh conflict. Now, they are hoping to develop ecotourism in the Shikahogh State Reserve area. Sourp Stepanos was blessed on August 6nd by Holy Etchmiadzin Bishop Hovannes Hakopyan and clergy of the Syunik Diocese. Present at the consecration ceremonies were Kegham Kevonian President of UIOTC (Union of Land and Culture International), Haig and Hilda Manjikian and Nazaret Kevonian of LCO-USA, project architect Stepan Nalbandian of LCO/OTC Armenia “Yergeer Yev Meshagiut”, along with LCO/OTC volunteers and members. Over two hundred members of the Shikahogh community, neighboring villagers, and mayors from surrounding villages and attended the ceremonies. It was an emotional moment for all present following the culmination of years of hard work by volunteers and local craftsmen. Some community elders remember being baptized at

Sourp Stepanos. Throughout the project's duration, 60 volunteers from the diaspora lived in Shikahogh and worked on Sourp Stepanos. Volunteers participated in every aspect of the project from archaeologic digs, clearing the exterior and interior of the church, fixing the roof, rebuilding the altar and more. Since 1989, LCO/OTC has worked on 20 projects including renovation of community centers, schools, construction of solar dryers, and historical church restoration in Armenia and Artsakh. In addition to the completion of Sourp Stepanos, LCO/OTC began work on a new project in southern Armenia. This year’s campaign brought 40 dedicated volunteers from the United States, France, Canada, Mexico, Russia, Armenia, and Artsakh to spend three-weeks in the Syunik region, rebuilding the 17thcentury historical Sourp Hovannes (St. John) church in Armenia’s southern most point of Meghri. The Meghri restoration project will take four to five years to complete. During the campaign, workdays of physical labor participating in the renovation of this Armenian church is just one part of the LCO/OTC experience. Volunteers live in a very modest rural home and spend non-working hours bonding with village residents, while enjoying local activities and their surroundings.
