A PUBLICATION OF ARMENIAN DEMOCRATIC LIBERAL PARTY, WESTERN DISTRICT COMMITTEE OF THE UNITED STATES
Primate's Christmas Message HOMILY ON THE NATIVITY AND THEOPHANY OF OUR LORD “Today, the Sun of righteousness was revealed before mankind” ST. NERSESS THE GRACEFUL Cuddled in the heavenly azure, the star of Bethlehem shone like a celestial lantern cherishing the spark of hope and expectation. Every now and then, the gloomy clouds seemed to devour the star in a sinister attempt to diminish its brightness. Despite their relentless efforts, the fearless star emerged through the darkness. Heaven and earth were both in agony of labor, for the star was giving birth to a sun and the Son of God would be born to a Virgin. At dusk, when the darkness disappeared and the stars lost their glimmer, the sun rose in the horizon and the Savior was born. Indeed, the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is the radiating sun in the life of humanity. In the words of St. Nersess the Graceful, “Today, the Sun of righteousness was revealed before mankind.” And what is the sun of righteousness for a Christian, if not the compass, the touchstone, and the standard of all moral and spiritual values? It’s not a coincidence that from ancient times, long before Christ, people worshipped the sun because it was the source of life as well as the guide in determining the time, weather, and orientation. Remember, people did not have smartphones or navigation systems back in the day. When we delve into the mystery of the Incarnation, especially reflecting on the promise of salvation and the establishment of peace in the world, the metaphor of the sun of righteousness becomes clearer and more comprehensible. People perceive what they wish to perceive. However, the objective reality is that we live in turbulent times. The world is plagued by geopolitical, economic, religious, and social turmoil which jeopardizes peace and stability in the world. Of the aforementioned, however, the most tragic is the troubled soul and the distorted thought of men, which lead to a state of disorientation, uncertainty, and restlessness. As described in the Psalms, “They wander in the wilderness in a desolate way; they cannot find a city to dwell in.” (Psalms 107:4) People seem to be lost, for the value system has been distorted. Vice and virtue, truth and lie, black and white have been confusingly intertwined. For instance, we witness the brute force of countries, who ignite wars and command the intimidating display of their military might. Ironically and quite hypocritically, the leaders of those countries do not miss an opportunity to lecture on world peace from lofty podiums. This example alone concurs the classic double standard of morals of today’s society. “Democracy,” “liberalism,” “progressiveness,” and many other “isms” have captured us in a web of ambiguous
meanings and arbitrary definitions. Subconsciously, we have become the captives of our thought as we fear to touch on those sensitive terms thus, avoiding to call things by their proper names. Political correctness and oversensitivity have turned us into indecisive, spineless, and wishy-washy beings. This unfortunate reality is due to the loss of our sense of direction and the abandonment of Christian ethics and values. Today, as we celebrate the Nativity and Theophany of the Son of God, the sun of righteousness shines in the horizon. Christ the Babe is born. God, the Father has favored us with another opportunity to repent and reclaim the truthful meaning of life having Him as the ultimate standard and the guide. The miraculous birth of Christ makes us shine again in the blistering cold and warm the hearts of those who surround us. The Sun of righteousness illuminates our lives, brightens our minds, alters our perspective, and clears our vision. Most importantly, the Sun of righteousness, the Son of God, through His miraculous birth liberates us from the captivity of fear so that we can express ourselves straightforwardly and earnestly without succumbing to hypocrisy, and fake values. God makes the sun of righteousness rise upon us so that we may see and follow the truth without giving way to sin, praising mediocracy, or promoting weakness. On the threshold of the New Year, when we celebrate the Nativity of Christ, these reflections allow us to reevaluate our spiritual lives. Then we commit to surrender our lives into the hands of God so that He may mold and shape our spirituality and increase in us the faith, hope, and love. In this sense, the birth of Christ is a divine message addressed to us to love one another, the Church, and the Motherland. Moreover, the birth of the Only Begotten exhorts us to strive to become perfect, exemplary, just, loyal, peace-loving, humble, humanist, truthful, fearless, creative and visionary servants. Our moral and spiritual obligations are not confined to the aforementioned qualities. Furthermore, as true Christians we are obliged to also pray for those who do not know the Savior. We pray for the peace in the world and for the souls of those who perished as a result of bloody wars, natural disasters without seeing the dawn of Christmas. We pray for the world and hope that the year 2017 may be prosperous for all. Today, the Sun of righteousness was revealed before mankind. Christ is Born and Revealed. Blessed is the Revelation of Christ. ARCHBISHOP HOVNAN DERDERIAN Primate Feast of the Nativity and Theophany 2017, Burbank

Armenian Church Patriarchy of Turkey to elect new leader The Armenian Apostolic Church Patriarchate of Constantinople will have a new leader in 2017. The severe illness of incumbent Patriarch Mesrob Mutafyan hasn’t allowed him to perform his functions since 2007. In October 2016, the Supreme Council decided to appeal to the relevant authorities for the election of a new patriarch. The elections will most likely take place in spring, said Bagrat Estoukian, the editor of Agos Weekly Armenian edition in an interview with Armenian News-NEWS.am. “The campaign has not even started, and it is difficult to say who are the likely candidates. At the moment, there are four registered candidates: Deputy Patriarch Aram Ateshian, Bishop Sahak Mashalian of the Religious Council, head of the German Diocese Archbishop Garegin Bekchyan, and head of Gugark Diocese Archbishop Sepuh Chuldjian. In my opinion, the final struggle will be between two out of four candidates, as two others will give up,” he said. According to Bagrat Estoukian, it is hard to say exactly, which candidates will compete at the final round. He did not exclude a scenario, when Deputy Patriarch Aram Ateshian aban-
don the competition. “Ateshian’s candidacy is out-of-date, and I hardly see people vote for him,” he added. Estoukian replied to the question about a possible interference to the elections by the Turkish authorities. “It is impossible, that the Turkish authorities intervene, because if they try something like that, it will have an opposite effect.” The Armenian community in Istanbul has long been divided over the choice of the patriarch. Patriarch Mutafyan is unable to perform his duties due to health problems. However, according to the regulations of the Patriarchate, the patriarch is elected for life. Most of the community was demanding new elections, while the other part of the community stressed that ecclesiastical law prohibits the selection of a new patriarch, while the incumbent is alive. During these years, the functions of the patriarch have been carried out by the Deputy Patriarch Aram Ateshian. Part of the Armenian community of Istanbul does not accept Ateshian and consider him a person appointed by Erdogan.

During the press conference, plans were announced to copublish a multimedia e-book on the region as part of the AVC series. “Tourism is one of the many dynamic developing sectors in Armenia. Committed to its mission of supporting Armenia’s socio-economic progress, AGBU is actively engaged in the development and promotion of innovative products, such as ebooks, to increase awareness and promote Armenia as a unique touristic destination attractive for people of all age groups and diverse interests,” said AGBU Armenia president and AGBU Central Board member Vasken Yacoubian. The Vayots Dzor e-book will be part of AVC’s multi-platform media product series accessible from smart phones, tablets and web browsers. The new e-book will cover the history and geography of the region of Vayots Dzor and will contain a range of information on local cuisine, architecture, archeology, festivals, regional events and adventure trips. Available in seven languages, subscriptions to the e-book series are free. The first two in the series are The Armenian Highland and Exploring Yerevan. History of AGBU, the third e-book in the series, is set to be launched by the end of 2016. “This project comes to add to the mission and continued efforts of the Armenian Virtual College in introducing the Armenian heritage to the global community,” said Dr. Yervant Zorian, AVC founder and AGBU Central Board member. “Seeing the popularity of our multimedia e-book series,
Yervant Zorian, AVC founder and AGBU Central Board member, and Olivier Messmer, chief-of-party of the Smithsonian My Armenia program. we believe e-publication is the best means to present the wealth of our heritage in a state-of-the-art manner. We are delighted that the Smithsonian Institution and USAID are also committed to further developing tourism in Armenia and are excited about this collaboration. The e-book on Vayots Dzor is going to be part of a series that will be covering various regions of Armenia.” The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum and research complex in the United States attracting more than 30 million visitors per year. It also has an overseas presence in 130 countries promoting cultural resilience, conserving biodiversity, studying and supporting cultural and natural heritage. The Smithsonian My Armenia program aims to enhance and increase cultural heritage tourism in the regions outside of the capital city of Yerevan through a unique combination of research, scholarship, support for artisan craft, capacity building, and a strong focus on fresh thinking for tourism development. Smithsonian and Armenian researchers are work-
ing with local communities to identify and document their cultural expressions, including food, crafts, music, dance, and traditional knowledge. The information collected will then be used in the AGBU AVC e-book and other platforms to promote and share stories about Armenia’s cultural, historic, and artistic riches with visitors from around the world. “Through USAID and Smithsonian joint efforts, the My Armenia program will aim to demonstrate the productive relationship that can occur between culture and economic development. Enhanced and diversified cultural heritage tourism developed by experts and the efforts of My Armenia, in close cooperation with key partners such as AGBU AVC, can drive sustainable economic growth in rural communities and support them in improving the sustainability of Armenian cultural heritage,” said Olivier Messmer, chief-of-party of the Smithsonian My Armenia program. He has a long lists of films, serials and theater performances. Since 1987, he is involved as instructor at various universities and private educational institutions. January 19, 2008, was the first anniversary of the Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink’s assassination. The main commemoration took place in front of the Armenian newspaper Agos in Istanbul where Dink was shot to death. Many other commemorations took place in Istanbul, Berlin,
Frankfurt, Koln, Paris, California, Ottawa, and London. "Remembering Hrant " was one of the events in Istanbul where many of Hrant Dink's friends participated to remember him with different activities, reciting, singing, playing misic etc.. Mahir Gün!iray was one of the participants. (1) On December 2008, two hundred prominent Turkish intellectuals released an apology for the "great catastrophe of 1915". This was a clear reference to the Armenian Genocide, a term still too sensitive to use so openly. The signatories also announced a website related to this apology, and called on others to visit the site and sign the apology as well. This is the brief text of the apology: “ My conscience does not accept the insensitivity showed to and the denial of the Great Catastrophe that the Ottoman Armenians were subjected to in 1915. I reject this injustice and for my share, I empathize with the feelings and pain of my Armenian brothers and sisters. I apologize to them. Mahir Gün!iray is one of the intellectuals who signed the statement. (2) According to "Today’s Zaman", Lawyers for the co-plaintiffs in the trial over the murder of Turkish Armenian journalist Hrant Dink requested on October 12, 2009 documents found during the searches of homes and offices of suspects from the
prosecutor investigating Ergenekon, a clandestine organization whose alleged members are currently standing trial in two separate court cases. The 11th hearing of Hrant Dink's murder suspects’ trial was heard on October 12, 2016 with suspects Ogun Samast. Lawyer Fethiye Cetin demanded that the court request documents seized during the Ergenekon probe relating to the organization’s Psychological Action Plan against minorities in Turkey. Cetin stated that Dink’s killing, along with the 2006 killing of an Italian priest and the 2007 killing of three Christians in Malatya, was part of an operation in the works being carried out by Ergenekon. In addition to the suspects, a large number of high-profile spectators including Dink’s wife, Rakel Dink, and other family members; Democratic Society Party (DTP) deputy Sebahat Tuncel; Justice and Development Party (AK Party) deputy and head of the Parliament’s Human Rights Commission, Zafer Uskul; co-chair of the EU-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Commission, Helene Flautre; Ali Yurttagül, a political advisor for the Greens in the European Parliament; and Vincent Niore and Alexandre Couyoumdjian, representing the Bar Associations of Brussels and Paris, also attended the hearing. Meanwhile, a group gathering at the Be!ikta! Barbaros Square, not far from the court-
house, protested the Hrant Dink murder by unrolling posters that read, “For Hrant, for Justice.” Actor Mahir Gunsiray, in a statement on behalf of the group, claimed there were attempts to cover up the real culprits behind the murder. (3)

TSUNAMI OF EMOTIONS: AN ARMENIAN PRIEST'S QUEST FOR THE UNIVERSAL SOUL V. R. Father Pakrad Berjekian By Arthur Hagopian The words flow out powerfully in a resurgent stream, like the waters of the River Jordan, unstoppable, evocative, seeking to stir, rouse us into an emotional or spiritual contemplation. Always seeking the light, soaring towards the light. As he walks along a dark and silent street, his head down, he is shadowed by the moon. The wind blows dispassionately, as if intent on throttling the silence. Self-centered, he is seeking answers from God, but when he stumbles against a beggar, he relents and asks forgiveness for his egoism and mercy for the hapless man. Meet the poet, the Very Reverend Father, Pakrad Berjekian, Vicar general of the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church in America, former Chairman of General Assembly of the Brotherhood of St James in Jerusalem. A priest and a poet. Not a first - he is preceded by such illustrious Armenian greats as Ghevont Alishan, St Nerses the Gracious, Megerditch Khrimian ("Hayrig"), Khoren de Lusignan, Sayat Nova): another beacon of light for literature, not only Armenian, but universal. What Berjekian writes, finds echoes in all languages, all over the world. There was a time when, in his teens, the words would flow from the end of a lead pencil, black on white, wafting onto a sheet of lined paper, scratching long lines of vivid emotion. The lead pencil is long gone now, replaced by the serrated black rows of a computer keyboard. No scratching paper. just a luminescent screen, where his somber visage is reflected, a background censor zealously marking the outpouring of words. He was only 17, a novice seeking a life of spiritual enlightenment as a seminarian in Jerusalem, immersed in the quest of
service to God and his community, when he felt the first inklings of a poetic stirring in his soul. He remembers his first bashful attempts at putting down the cascade of ideas filling his mind. He was fortunate in having as his mentor an acclaimed poet, and fellow priest, the late Patriarch, Archbishop Yeghishe Derderian. Under his tutelage, Berjekian's budding skills developed and the young seminarian forged ahead with his dreams of capturing the world in rhythm and rhyme. "Derderian read everything I wrote and helped me with his critique," Berjekian confides. The years rolled by and he became ordained a celibate priest of the Holy See of Jerusalem. There never was any conflict between the chalice and the pen. Every time he lifts the golden cup during holy mass, his eyes brim with tears, but his hands are sturdy as a rock, as in awestruck reverence, he offers his prayers: there is nothing before him but the blood and body of Christ which he is consecrating. And when he sits down to craft his poems, there is no other thought other than capturing the "tsunami" of emotions pleading for utterance. Berjekian's style is heedless of quanti-
tative linear considerations. "The important thing is the theme and the imagery and the message. The beauty is in the imagery and its flow with a tsunami of emotions," he explains. "I do not look or explore, feelings and thoughts may rush through my mind simply by observing a natural scene or by hearing some heart touching music," he explains. "Personal injustices or malicious acts, or any kind of happy moments may have an impact on my urge to write," he adds. "Feelings create images in me which come out in words imagined in my own way. For example, I watch the rain, and often see in the rain the image of a harp played by divine hands resulting in a heavenly music." Writing under the pen name Pakradouni, derived from an ancient Armenian hereditary nobility, he has produced three books so far with such catching titles as: "Looysn Ooshatzadz" [The Light is Late],"Hokiyi Hamerk" [Orchestra of the Soul], and "Hooysi Navag" [The Boat of Hope]. It is a universal truth that the life of a priest is one of personal penance and sacrifice, embedded in pledges of obedience, poverty and celibacy, in a world where temptation beckons us at every step.
Berjekian knows that abandoning and renouncing the world and all its riches in favor of serving God and man, demands a lifelong commitment, bolstered by an indomitable will and an indefatigable zeal. No stranger to hard work and dedication, he had been tasked with the oversight and protection of the Armenian Patriarchate's real estates in Jerusalem, and when he was sent to the US, he was assigned Vicar of the Western Diocese and supervisor of all Saturday schools functioning under its authority. [The Jerusalem Patriarchate is the second most important source of spiritual rejuvenation for all Armenians after the Mother Church at Etchmiadzin, Armenia. One of its fundamental tasks is the training of priests at its theological seminary: Armenian churches around the world rely upon Jerusalem to replenish the ranks of their clergy when they run down]. Berjekian had chosen a career that is relentlessly difficult and demanding, but at the same time, immeasurably rewarding. Wrapped in a world of spirituality, and a heavy cloak to ward off the merciless weather, he would walk the streets of the Old City of Jerusalem on cold winter nights, to assume his duties as a celebrant in the Cathedral of the Holy Sepulchre, his heart bursting with a concatenation of thoughts, feelings and emotions. The midnight trek is part of the trauma and torment that is the lot of an Armenian priest. But for Berjekian, it is also a precious period of quiet reflection, and there is a smile on his face as he plods on. For he knows how to turn pain into song, as he says in his "Orchestra of the Soul". "My wound that festered of eve "Is transmuted into song today."

German Reich and the Armenian Genocide by Rolf Hosfeld and Christin Pschichholz ISBN: 978-3-8353-1897-7 ! 29,90

During the First World War, the Ottoman Empire was a crucial ally of Germany’s. With the beginning of the Armenian persecution by Turkey, which, through extensive deportations and massacres, had been launched into a genocide by the spring of 1915, the German Reich was inevitably involved in the events. This affected the military, the German Embassy, consular personnel and German civilians on the ground, as well as the national political and military power centers of the German Reich. How deeply was Germany entangled in the Ottoman/Armenian situation? Was there German responsibility involved in the genocide? Was there any significant contradiction in placing the entire fault with the Ottoman Empire, or did Germany deserve some blame as well? The authors show how civilian populations have increasingly become the target of military and radical measures of population policy. There were advocates and opponents. In summary, a moral-free obligation can be diagnosed by means of a war-related "realpolitik," which did not remain without consequences for the German post-war mentality. With contributions from, among others: Aschot Hayruni, Rolf Hosfeld, Isabell Hull, Stefan Ihrig, Hilmar Kaiser, HansLukas Kieser, Carl Alexander Krethlow, Mark Levene, Christin Pschichholz, Thomas Schmutz and Ronald Gregor Suny.
Los Angeles, December 28, 2016 – On December 23, 2016, the Armenian Bone Marrow Donor Registry (ABMDR) and the R. O. Yeolian Hematology Center signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) in Yerevan. The MoC was signed by Dr. Sevak Avagyan, executive director of ABMDR; and Prof. Smbat Daghbashyan, director of the Hematology Center. The scope of the MoC comprises a broad range of synergistic activities in terms of donor searches, HLA typing, information exchange, consultancy, and bone marrow stem cell transplantations. In the course of the one-year contract period, ABMDR will perform compatible stem cell donor searches as well as low- and high-resolution HLA typing of family donors and patients, and share the data with the Hematology Center. ABMDR will perform low-resolution issue typing for a maximum of 60 patients and three family members each, and high-resolution HLA typing for a maximum of 40 patients. ABMDR will render all of these services free of charge, throughout the duration of the agreement. While ABMDR and the Hematology Center will exchange information on potential donors and patients as needed, they will jointly assess, evaluate, and monitor donor-search and transplantation procedures. Additionally, the two institutions will share professional consultancy and expertise with regard to bone marrow and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, on a case-by-case basis. All collaborative activities will be facilitated and led by a Joint Transplant Coordination Board, as stipulated by the MoC. The Board will consist of doctors and other healthcare professionals from ABMDR and the Hematology Center. They will include
specialists in clinical hematology and transplantology, as well as experts in tissue typing and laboratory diagnostics. The signing of the MoC comes on the heels of the launch of Armenia’s first Bone Marrow Transplantation Center, in November 2016. Established as an on-site unit of the R. O. Yeolian Hematology Center, in Yerevan, the Bone Marrow Transplantation Center will collaborate closely with ABMDR and its HLA Typing Laboratory in Yerevan. “The launch of the Bone Marrow Transplantation Center as well as our agreement with the R. O. Yeolian Hematology Center are major milestones for Armenian medicine and medical research,” said ABMDR president Dr. Frieda Jordan. “While the establishment of a transplantation center in Armenia has been our cherished dream for the past 17 years, our collaboration with the Hematology Center is poised to take our collective work to a whole new level of excellence, in our shared quest to save lives. I’d like to convey our profound appreciation and gratitude to Prof. Smbat Daghbashyan of the Hematology Center, as well as the Health Ministry of the Republic of Armenia, for their extraordinary collaboration and support!” About the Armenian Bone Marrow Donor Registry: Established in 1999, ABMDR, a nonprofit organization, helps Armenians and nonArmenians worldwide survive life-threatening blood-related illnesses by recruiting and matching donors to those requiring bone marrow stem cell transplants. To date, the registry has recruited over 28,000 donors in 42 countries across four continents, identified over 4,200 patients, and facilitated 27 bone marrow transplants. Serena Williams reveals surprise engagement to Reddit Co-Founder Alexis Ohanian – on Reddit! Wedding bells are ringing for Serena Williams! The tennis great has announced that she is engaged to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, 33. Fittingly, she broke the news in a poem – on Reddit. “I came home. A little late. Someone had a bag packed for me. And a carriage waited. Destination: Rome,” Williams, 35, wrote on her verified Reddit account. “To escort me to my very own ‘charming.’ Back to where our stars first collided. And now it was full circle. At the
same table we first met by chance.” She continued: “But by choice. Down on knee. He said 4 words. And I said yes.” Ohanian shared the Reddit announcement on Facebook, simply writing, “She said yes.” He also commented on Williams’ Reddit post, writing, “And you made me the happiest man on the planet.” The engagement comes as a surprise to many – Williams and Ohanian have kept their love private. However, they did
show off their silly sides in an Instagram photo around Halloween. “Bear necessities,” Williams captioned the shot of Ohanian in a bear costume with her flaunting her booty in pajamas that read “BEAR CHEEKS” on the bottom. The two reportedly began dating in 2015, according to E! News. The tennis legend was previously linked to Patrick Mouratoglou and rappers Drake and Common. Williams boasts 22 Grand
Slam titles along with dozens of other accolades throughout her career. And Ohanian has a list of accomplishments under his belt too. Along with co-founding Reddit, the New York native is the author of Without Their Permission. CHAR ADAMS People.com
Berkeley, CA - The Paros Foundation is proud to report that $104,000 was successfully distributed to 104 families of Heroes killed through the end of May 2016. Paros staff personally met with all of the families and passed on this modest, but immensely important amount. “The families of our heroes expressed their deep appreciation for the support they received from The Paros Foundation,” said Peter Abajian, Executive Director of The Paros Foundation. “Families stated over and over again how meaningful it was having both having us visit them and knowing the Diaspora remains vigilant.” On the morning of April 1st, 2016, under President Ilham Aliyev’s rule, Azeri armed forces launched an attack on Artsakh claiming the lives of 104 civilians, volunteers and soldiers, young and old. What has been coined as the “Four Day War” left Armenians throughout the world in a state of shock, anger and sadness. In response to the devastating news and with encouragement from supporters, The Paros Foundation immediately launched the Support Our Heros fund. The goal of the fund was to raise $1,000 for each Hero’s family. In a matter of weeks, more than $120,000 was raised for this effort. The Paros Foundation witnessed the coming together of Armenians throughout the world who contributed to the “ Support Our Heroes” fund. The Paros Foundation extends their deepest gratitude to Mr. Serj Tankian for his very successful effort to help promote this cause. “This effort is particularly important in that families of deceased soldiers in Armenia and Artsakh are economically disadvantaged to carry on,” said Serj Tankian via his social media post. AIWA-San Francisco Chapter, who collected $4,000 for severely impoverished widows of soldiers and contract fighters in Artsakh partnered with The Paros Foundation to help distribute these funds. Furthermore, the Repat, Sahman and Arar organizations who are based in Armenia also joined The Paros Foundation to help raise funds and conduct joint distributions for this important effort. Excess funds collected will used to provide aid to families of soldiers who were killed subsequent to May 2016. The fund will remain open and continue to help families of our heroes. A complete list of deceased soldiers is available on The Paros Foundation website www.parosfoundation.org. The Paros Foundation underwrote all administrative expenses associated with this effort allowing all contributions to be allocated 100% to the families. Donations to The Paros Foundation, a 501(c) 3 organization, are tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law.
