The Armenian Democratic Liberal Party of America announced the endorsement of incumbent Councilmember Zareh Sinanyan “Zareh Sinanyan has a proven track record for advocating for the betterment of the Armenian American Community and we are confident that he will continue to build on his strong track record once he gets re-elected.”

The Glendale elections are to take place on Tuesday April 4th, 2017. Currently there are ten candidates that are competing for three City Council seats, where each candidate is seeking to be elected to a four year term.

This announcement follows the organization’s endorsement of Ardashes Kassakhian for Glendale City Clerk, Armine Hagopian for GCC Board of Trustees District 3, Greg Krikorian for GUSD District B, Armina Gharpetian for GUSD District C and Shant Sahagian for GUSD District D. About Zareh Sinanyan After serving Glendale for the past four years as councilmember and mayor, Councilman Zareh Sinanyan has decided to run for reelection in April. Mr. Sinanyan’s first City Council victory came in 2013 in a hotly contested race. While in office, Zareh fought to provide transparency for all residents, and sought to nurture a business friendly environment. Although, it is important to attract large businesses to Glendale, Mr. Sinanyan believes the City Council must foster an environment which will allow our own residents to grow their businesses locally instead of moving them abroad.

Stepanakert: Azerbaijani refugees may return by accepting Nagorno-Karabakh Republic citizenship STEPANAKERT. – Azerbaijani refugees may return by accepting the citizenship of the NagornoKarabakh Republic.

Davit Babayan, Head of the Central Information Department of the Office of the Republic of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh Republic/ NKR) President and Deputy Dead of the NKR President’s Office, stated the abovementioned.

He noted this commenting—at the request of Armenian NewsNEWS.am—on the Azerbaijani deputy FM’s statement regarding their “Great Return” plan. Babayan recalled, however, that this is not the

first such statement.

“Actually, the return is very easy to implement; it’s enough to become a citizen of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic,” he noted. “We [i.e. Artsakh] do not discriminate between the citizens of different nationalities.

We are a developed democratic state,

by contrast to Azerbaijan, where people are persecuted solely for belonging to the Armenian nation.”

At the same time, Davit Babayan stressed that Armenian refugees from Azerbaijan also need to be considered when discussing the matter of refugees.

“Furthermore, the ancient Armenian lands—Shahumyan, Northern Karabakh—remain under the control of Azerbaijan,” he added.

Also, Babayan recalled that capital city Baku and the majority of the cities of Azerbaijan were built by Armenian architects. news.am

Warsaw: There is threat that Europe may split There is a threat that Europe may split, if the necessary reforms are not implemented. This was announced by the head of Polish president's press service Marek Magierowski, reports the Polish Radio.

Magierowski stressed, that Law and Justice party does not plan to alienate Poland to the EU. However, in his opinion, if the European Union does not make changes, it will soon split. "We do not talk about Poland's withdrawal from the EU. Instead, it is worth to discuss the possible EuroBrexit, i.e. the split of the EU. If the EU fails to overcome this situation, we

will face more serious consequences than the withdrawal of Poland from the EU.” According to the Polish president's press secretary the fate of Poles living in Great Britain is still unknown. As he said, the President of Poland Andrzej Duda will negotiate on this issue if necessary, although it is the government's prerogative.

On March 25, there will take place the EU leaders summit in Rome, where a declaration on the future of the EU after the Brexit will be adopted. 

For almost a century, the AGBU Scholarship Program has helped further the educational pursuits of tens of thousands of promising young Armenian students enrolled at some of the world's top-ranked universities.

Today, through added specialized initiatives, the AGBU Scholarship Program offers financial assistance to a broader range of Armenian students across the globe.

AGBU accepts applications for five categories of scholarships: Heritage Scholar Grants for high-achieving high school seniors at the three AGBU high schools in the United States; US Graduate Fellowships for students in professional, master's and doctoral programs in the United States; International Scholarships for students studying outside the United States with special funds for the United Kingdom, France and Syria; Performing Arts Fellowships for undergraduate and graduate students in music, drama and film; and Religious Studies Fellowships for graduate students pursuing theology and youth ministry.

AGBU US GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS For the 2016-2017 academic year, 72 students enrolled in professional, masters and doctoral degree programs in the United States were awarded nearly $262,000 in the form of US Graduate Scholarships. The recipients represented a variety of fields, including law, architecture and medicine.

Many hope to use their education to benefit Armenia and Armenians.

Lara Markarian, a first-year law student at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law, graduated from Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service in 2013 where she was encouraged to examine how laws can be improved to address complex issues, such as the Armenian Genocide. "Now, by getting my law degree at Berkeley, I hope to gather the tools I need to further achieve my goal of helping the Armenian community as well as other groups who seek justice in the face of international conflict, war, genocide, and displacement," says Markarian.

Karen Berberyan, a master's student in architectural design at Columbia University, has already begun to apply his education to benefit his native Armenia. Before coming to the United States, Berberyan worked at the Yerevan office of the Londonbased Tim Flynn Architects, during which time he was part of a team that brought sustainable architecture and design to the towns of Dilijan and Tatev. "It is my firm aim to become a high-level professional and a leader in my field, to manage important local and international projects, and to transform the culture of architecture in Armenia into a modern and progressive environment. I aim to make serious contributions to the development of a more attractive, sustainable, livable, and modern

AGBU INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS AGBU awarded over $380,000 to 230 students in the form of AGBU International Scholarships to those studying outside the United States. Like AGBU US Graduate Scholarship recipients, many recipients of the AGBU International Scholarships were also driven to pursue their course of study by their Armenian heritage.

Gohar Grigoryan is a doctoral student at the Department of Medieval Art History at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland. There she carries out research on Cilician Armenian art in the context of intercultural exchange in the medieval Mediterranean. "During my undergraduate studies, I discovered for myself the symbolic and cosmopolitan nature of medieval Armenian culture, which inspired me to pursue this field in my doctoral work," said Grigoryan.

Antonios Tashejian also has a love for history. A second-year student at the Sorbonne in Paris, Antonios-originally from Lebanon-studies all periods in history as well as German and Persian. "After my bachelor's degree, I plan on pursuing a postgraduate degree in politics and Middle Eastern history, or genocide studies. I have always been passionate about these subjects and I thank AGBU for helping me to become the historian, political scientist and

AGBU PERFORMING ARTS SCHOLARSHIPS For the 2016-2017 academic year, a total of $113,000 was awarded to 41 recipients of the AGBU Performing Arts Scholarship.

The recipients are musicians and artists of all types from Armenia and throughout the diaspora.

Narek Arutyunian, a clarinetist, is a first-year master's student at the Manhattan School of Music. Inspired to play the clarinet by his father, an Armenian folk clarinetist, Arutyunian has big aspirations for the future: "I am hoping to become a distinguished clarinet professor and teach the next generations of clarinet players."

Also originally from Armenia, Hasmik Vardanyan is a cellist working toward her artist diploma at the University of Houston's Moore's School of Music. As a student new to the United States, she is thankful for her AGBU scholarship, which has allowed her to immerse herself in her program: "I'm in this program to discover new ways of musical interpretation, to find new ideas and new feelings. A musician must be an artist, painter, philosopher and psychologist. The more I see, the more I live, the more I travel, the more I read, the more it will all have an effect on my understanding of life and it will definitely impact my personality as a musician."

In commemoration of the 102nd anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, starting March 10th to April 30th 2017, billboards commemorating Armenian Genocide will appear in Massachusetts.

Could World War III Start in This Tiny Corner of the Caucasus?

Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict Smolders On The Verge Of War What area of the world smolders with the threat of all-out war, with soldiers on both sides dying intermittently, where all the combatants are flush with new Russian weapons, and where the world’s great Cold War powers back opposite sides? You have probably not heard of the NagornoKarabakh region of the Caucasus, which has been a ‘frozen conflict’ since before the Bolshevik revolution of 1917. That could change rather quickly.

The conflict shakes out basically upon ethnic lines, not religious ideology. In short, the Armenians and the Azerbaijanis both want the same territory that lies between their two countries. The Soviet occupation forced a reduction in the all-out fighting but the tension simmered below the surface for decades, finally erupting in the late 1980s and ’90s. A fragile cease-fire has held since before the turn of the Millennium.

However, oil-rich Azerbaijan has been spending a lot of that oil money on weapons. Inexplicably Russia, hard up for foreign currency, has been only too happy

MAURICE MISSAK KELECHIAN TO PRESENT AN ILLUSTRATED LECTURE ANTELIAS PRIOR TO THE CATHOLICOSATE OF CILICIA Maurice Missak Kelechian an independent researcher will give a talk entitled “Antelias prior to the Catholicosate of Cilicia” on Sunday, March 19, 2017, at 4:00 p.m., at the Ararat-Eskijian Museum—Sheen Chapel, 15105 Mission Hills Road, Mission Hills, CA. The lecture is co-sponsored by the National Association for Armenian Studies and Research (NAASR).

This illustrated presentation will present a complete journey through Antelias between the years 1922 and 1932. Topics covered will include the history and geographical location of Antelias, the Near East Relief orphanage from the original tents to the construction of barracks, and the first wooden church of Antelias. Kelechian’s most recent research has focused on two orphanages in Lebanon: in Antoura where, between 1915 and 1918, around 2,000 orphans were gathered and Turkified by Jemal Pasha and Halide Edib Adivar; and at Ghazir where, in 1925 the “In Golden Rule Gratitude” special rug was woven by the orphan girls and sent to the U.S. President, Calvin Coolidge, to be displayed at the White House. Maurice Missak Kelechian is an electrical engineer by training, an independent researcher known for his research and discoveries of Armenian historical documents, photos, monuments, and heritage sites. Currently he resides in Los Angeles and works in the biomedical field. The Armenians sense an emboldened Azerbaijan, armed with modern weapons, that wants to gain further territory it lost late in the twentieth century.

Russia is closely allied with Armenia and has troops stationed in the country since the days of the Soviet Union. Russian troops actually patrol the Armenian border with Iran and Turkey. Russian commanders in the region have said they will come to Armenia’s aid if Azerbaijan attempts to take territory in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Azerbaijan is allied with Turkey and Turkey is very angry with Armenia for wanting the slaughter of Armenians during the Ottoman Empire labelled as genocide.

Relations between Turkey and Russia plummeted over a year ago when Ankara shot down a Russian jet that had veered into its territory while attacking a Syrian position, killing one of its crew members.

Since then, Russia and Turkey have grown

closer, mainly due to the realization that they need each other economically and Turkey wanted to distance itself from the European Union.

However, the clear fact is that Turkey and Russia support different sides in the conflict. Turkey is a member of NATO and has the support of the United States if attacked. If conflict erupts in NagornoKarabakh and Azerbaijan takes additional territory, will Russia respond militarily?

And if so, How would Erdogan react?

Could the rest of the world be drawn into war? The “frozen” conflicts of the Soviet Union still create the opportunity for death and destruction from Ukraine, to South Ossetia, to the Caucasus. The Nagorno-Karabakh issue seems especially deserving of the international communities attention to prevent it spinning out of control.

'MAKE ARMENIA GREEN AGAIN' PERFORMANCES BY ARMCOMEDY TO BENEFIT ARMENIAN ASSEMBLY AND ATP

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Armenian Assembly of America (Assembly) and Armenia Tree Project (ATP) will host the ArmComedy duo of Narek Margaryan and Sergey Sargsyan for their first-ever comedy performances in the United States. ArmComedy's benefit events will be held in Boston, Los Angeles, and San Francisco Bay Area. Tickets go on sale to the general public on March 23.

The performances are in English and will take place at Winchester Town Hall in the Boston area on Friday, April 28; at Stars on Brand in Glendale on Thursday, May 4; and in the San Francisco Bay Area at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, May 6. The "Make Armenia Green Again" ArmComedy Tour will benefit the work of the Assembly and ATP. "We're excited to bring ArmComedy to the US for the first time," ATP Executive Director Jeanmarie Papelian and Assembly Executive Director Bryan Ardouny said.

"We like to promote new ideas and support talented young artists such as the thoughtful commentators of ArmComedy. Our audiences will have a great time while supporting a good cause."

Airing three times a week, ArmComedy is the first satiric news site in Armenia.

It has been dubbed as Armenia's version of The Daily Show, featuring sharp political humor and wit. Writers and hosts Narek and Sergey have presented their distinctive, often irreverent, and always hilarious talents since 2009 with almost 600 episodes.

As they note, their mission is to "restore

sanity and embarrass bad governance in Armenia."

During his epic visit to Armenia in 2015 with his assistant Sona Movsesian, comedian and late night show host Conan O'Brien appeared on ArmComedy. The program was a triumph, resulting in Conan giving the hosts permission to spread the rumor that he has Armenian roots. Since 1994, ATP planted more than 5.2 million trees and created hundreds of jobs for Armenians in Armenia. These trees provide food, environmental benefits, and opportunities for economic growth. ATP's goal is to use trees to improve the standard of living while protecting the environment.

In doing so, ATP promotes self-sufficiency, and aids those with the fewest resources while conserving the indigenous ecosystem. Most importantly, ATP's programs allow inhabitants to stay on their ancestral lands. 

AGBU Hye Geen and Young Circle to Hold 11th Annual International Conference in Pasadena Expert panelists will evaluate the changes within the Armenian family in Armenia and beyond On Saturday, April 1, AGBU Hye Geen and AGBU Hye Geen’s Young Circle will hold their 11th annual international conference—entitled Evaluating the Changes Within the Armenian Family— which will focus on changes affecting the central role of the Armenian family both in Armenia and in the diaspora in Southern California.

Six distinguished professors and researchers will present a comprehensive overview of the Armenian family and raise awareness about persistent problems as well as the available resources to tackle them. The first speaker, Misha Margaryan from Yerevan State University, will probe “Modern Armenian Rural Family: Family Roles and Values,” followed by Father Vazken Movsesian, the director of Youth and Christian Outreach Department of the Western Diocese, who will reflect on “Spiritual Accountability.”

Pastor Daniel Albarian from Christian Outreach for Church will then consider the urgency of “Nurturing the Family for the Advancement of Culture” and Anahid Nara Sahakyan, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Sociology at Yerevan State University, will discuss “Selective Abortion as a Manifestation of Domestic Violence” and the need to combat selective abortions in Armenia.

After the lunch break, Frederick Mesropi, deputy attorney in the Los Angeles County Attorney’s Office, will talk about “Domestic Violence Law in California” and Matthew A. Jendian, professor and chair of sociology at Fresno State University, will focus his presentation on “Becoming American, Remaining Ethnic Armenian” on his noteworthy publication about issues of assimilation, cultural retention and ethnic identity among four generations of Armenian Americans.

“In view of the increased number of immigrants from Armenia and the disintegration of Middle Eastern Armenian communities, the discourse about the changes within the Armenian family as the bastion of Armenian survival will hopefully consolidate the urgency of men and women contributing to civil society,” said Sona Yacoubian, the president of AGBU Hye Geen.
